OGLETHORPE/GREENE—Authorities say the search last week for 15-year-old Mallory Mauldin from Oglethorpe County ended with her being found in Greene County. The search involved the Oglethorpe and Greene County Sheriff’s offices, as well as the GBI and concerned citizens. Last Monday, authorities began searching for Mauldin when they received information that her and her 18-yearold boyfriend, Avil Delgado, were planning to run away. The next day, authorities were able to locate Delgado, who led them to Mauldin hiding in a wooded area in Greene County. Avil Delgado was arrested and charged with statutory rape, obstruction of an officer and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

THIS WEEK IN HISTORY On April 2, 1992, a New York jury found mob boss John Gotti, head of the Gambino crime family, guilty of murder and racketeering.Nicknamed the Teflon Don for his ability to avoid several convictions in the 1980’s, Gotti’s luck ran out when he was arrested in December 1990. Prosecutors struck a deal with one of Gotti’s top men, “Sammy the Bull” Gravano, who testified against his boss during the trial. With Gravano’s damning testimony against Gotti and the government’s secret recordings, it only took a jury 13 hours to find Gotti guilty on all charges. Gotti was sentenced to life in prison. Ten years later, at the age of 61, Gotti died of throat cancer in a medical center for federal prisoners. On April 3, 1882, a fellow gang member shot one of America’s most infamous criminals, Jesse James, to death. James and his gangcommitted robberies and murders throughout the country for many years in the late 1800’s, until Bob Ford shot James in the back for reward money. His tombstone reads, “Jesse W. James, Died April 3, 1882, Aged 34 years, 6 months, 28 days, Murdered by a traitor and a coward whose name is not worthy to appear here.”

CLARKE—Recently, ACC police responded to a domestic dispute at a Pauldoe Circle residence. A woman reported arguing with Brice Goodloe, when he began choking her. The victim fought back and was able to free herself. When the woman tried to call 911, Goodloe punched her in the mouth, loosening several of her teeth. Officers located Goodloe a short time later and charged him with aggravated battery and obstructing 911 call.

THIS WEEK IN HISTORY This Week in History, continued from page 2 On April 4, 1968, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated at a hotel in Memphis, Tennessee. A single shot, fired by James Earl Ray at a nearby hotel from over 200 feet away, struck King in the neck. He died an hour later at St. Joseph’s Hospital. After the shooting, James Earl Ray fled to Canada and then to London. Two months later, authorities captured Ray in London. Ray pled guilty before his trial began in March 1969 and was sentenced to 99 years in prison. Ray recanted his confession a few months later and insisted on his innocence for years. Despite the support of members of the King family who were eager to determine if others were involved, Ray was never able to secure a new trial. James Earl Ray died on April 23, 1998. On April 5, 1994, rock icon Kurt Cobain committed suicide. An electrician, who was installing a security system in the house, discovered Cobain’s body inside his home in Seattle, Washington, three days later. Despite indications that Cobain, the lead singer of Nirvana, killed himself, several skeptics questioned the circumstances of his death and pinned responsibility on his wife, Courtney Love. However, police eventually concluded that Cobain’s death was the result of suicide.

CLARKE—Last week, ACC officers responded to a stabbing that just occurred in the Stonehenge Subdivision. Police made contact with the victim, Tyson Morrison, who said he and Devante Baker, of Colbert, had been fighting in a wooded area. Reportedly during the fight, Baker stabbed Morrison, who sustained wounds to his back and a laceration to his shoulder. Baker fled the scene, eluding authorities for a few hours. Authorities arrested Baker later in the day and charged him with aggravated assault. This is Baker’s third appearance in Bad & Busted, appearing previously for theft, burglary, and weapons charges in 2010.

After Rolling Dice, Seven Crap Out! The Greene County Sheriff’s Department, with assistance from three other state agencies, served search warrants at three Greensboro convenience stores as part of a video poker investigation. Authorities sent in undercover officers, after receiving several complaints about stores paying out cash prizes. After winning poker games played at the stores, the undercover officers received cash payouts from store employees. Reportedly, one store even had a private gambling room, similar to a real casino. While it is NOT illegal to
