CLARKE—Officers on patrol in the downtown area were flagged down by a taxi cab driver, who reported being approached by a black male who brandished a knife. The man claimed she nearly ran over him and approached her in a threatening manner. A witness pointed out the man to responding officers. Contact was made with George Terrell, of Atlanta Avenue, and found he was in possession of a knife and was intoxicated. Terrell was arrested and charged with aggravated assault. During a search, police found Terrell in possession of a quantity of marijuana that was packaged for sale and a quantity of cash. He was further charged with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute and possession of a weapon during the commission of a crime. TERRELL

CLARKE—Employees at a local hospital called police recently after noticing a woman, who was visiting a patient, behaving strangely. According to the report, police found the woman somewhat unresponsive in a wheelchair. The woman, later identified as Dana Davis, refused any medical treatment. While the officers talked to Davis, they noticed a stethoscope in her purse. Officers asked to see the stethoscope and found someone else’s name engraved on it. Officers arrested Davis for theft by taking. After a search of her purse, officers also found several other alleged stolen items, including 16 soap towelettes, 14 surgical gloves and several loose pills. Dana Davis, of Highland Park Drive, was charged with theft by taking, possession of controlled substance and prescription drugs not in original container. DAVIS

CLARKE—University of Georgia police officers were northbound on Finley Street when they witnessed a black male running into Parkview Homes with a gun. They pursued, but lost contact with the man with the gun. Shortly afterwards, they were flagged down by two men, who stated they had been walking near North Finley Street and Broad Street when they were robbed at gunpoint by a black male wearing a red shirt, red cap and khaki shorts and armed with a handgun. A perimeter was established by police officers to search for the suspect and any evidence that might be found. A handgun was found lying next to a dumpster in a parking area of Parkview Homes. While the officer stood by with the weapon until it could be photographed and collected, a cell phone was heard ringing inside the dumpster. Zachariah Garrett, of Colbert, was found hiding in the dumpster. He was brought out of the dumpster, and after both he and the dumpster were searched, property belonging to both victims was recovered. Garrett was arrested and charged with two counts of armed robbery, two counts of aggravated assault, obstruction of law GARRETT enforcement officers, and giving false information.

CLARKE—After responding to a complaint, an ACC officer arrested a panhandler at a local convenience store last week. Arriving at the Marathon on Lexington Road, the officer witnessed Donald Bonner, a well-known panhandler, asking a woman for money. The officer escorted Bonner inside so store management could bar him from the property. After exiting the store, Bonner threatened to get an AK-47 and shoot the officer and everyone inside the store. Rather than simply leaving the property, Bonner chose to add another arrest to his resume, being charged with obstruction of an officer and disorderly conduct. 57-year-old Bonner has over 50 prior incidents with police and makes his sixth appearance in Bad & Busted. Bath Salts -Deceiving Name, Deadly Effects!! There’s a new drug making its way into communities across the country!! Bath salts are to blame for the incident in Miami recently of Rudy Eugene attacking a 65-year-old homeless man, stripping off his clothes, diving on top of him and chewing off his face. Eugene had a history of runins with the police, and had been accused of domestic violence, but his history hadn’t suggested a risk of public violence. Reports from onlookers characterized Eugene as a “zombie,” behaving as if he were under the control of some evil. Or, take for instance, the 21-year-old Louisiana man who slit his throat in front of his family after he snorted bath salts, because he believed police were after him. In Pennsylvania, police arrested a couple high on bath salts who had nearly cut their 5-year-old daughter with a knife, which they were using to stab the 90 people they believed were living in the walls of their apartment. Bath salts seem to trigger full-blown psychotic episodes with extreme delusions and police around the country say they are seeing a spike in domestic violence and assault cases connected with new drug. Like Ecstasy and methamphetamine, the drug known as “bath salts” is a designer drug, which means it’s synthetic, concocted in a lab. Street names for the new drug include “bath powder,” “herbal incense” or “plant food.” To try and understand what the drug does, think of bath salts as a cross between meth and acid. Similar to cocaine, meth and speed, bath salts work by stimulating the central nervous system. But the drug also apparently causes paranoid delusions and/or hallucinations. Experts are saying it’s psychoactive, rather than hallucinogenic like acid, but the end result appears to be the same: delusional beliefs acted upon in violent ways. The key ingredients that go into bath salts are the synthetic compounds MDPV (3,4-Methylenedioxypyrovalerone), mephedrone, pyrovalerone, and methylone. But there are many other ingredients used in addition to these, or in place of them. For example, many of the bath salts seized have been found to contain extremely high levels of caffeine. Currently, the chemicals we call bath salts are most frequently manufactured and imported from China and Europe, but officials say it’s only a matter of time before American drug-cookers begin making them. The drug was actually first formulated in France in the 1920s, but disappeared not long after. It was then rediscovered by an underground chemist and published on a website, which was later shut down. But the word was out, and the drug became extremely popular all over Europe. Bath salts are cheap, innocent looking, easy to obtain, and many people think they’re legal, or at least know they are unlikely to be prosecuted for using them. Bath salts come in little packets with names like “Crazy Train”, “Bliss,” “Vanilla Sky,” and “Ivory Wave,” and cost just $25-60 a packet. Bath salts can be smoked, snorted, or injected. The initial symptoms are positive, including relaxation, euphoria, and a sense of warmth and wellbeing similar to Ecstasy. But pretty quickly a darker side of the drug kicks in. Bath salts highly addictive. Overdoses of bath salts can quickly turn into emergencies because of the lack of knowledge about the drug. Because of the volume of chemicals used to make bath salts, there is no test to determine if someone took the drug. The only way to know for sure is if the user admits to using them.

Beware of the Glue, Hoo-Hoo! Recently, an Oconee Co. Sheriff’s deputy was dispatched to Daniels Bridge Rd. in reference to a domestic dispute. Upon arrival, the deputy met with the victim, who had been in a fight with her husband. The deputy reported seeing injuries on the woman’s arms and the inside of the residence in disarray consistent with a physical altercation. The victim then told the deputy she had “super glue” in her intimate area, but would not say how it got there. The deputy noted seeing “super glue” stuck to the floor next to the victim’s bed. The deputy then spoke to the woman’s husband, Jeffrey Bishop, who had visible injuries on his arms as well. He also would not tell the deputy how the “super glue” got on his wife’s intimate area. Bishop told the deputy his wife had stolen several items from him and the deputy explained the warrant process regarding the

theft of his property. The woman was transported to a local hospital for treatment, where she then told deputies she was awakened her husband putting “super glue” in her intimate area. She also said her husband hit and choked her with a golf club. The deputy tried to make contact with Bishop after leaving the hospital, but he had left the residence. The deputy obtained warrants charging Bishop with battery and sexual battery. A few days later, Bishop turned himself into the Sheriff’s office and was subsequently charged with three counts of possessing a firearm while a convicted felon and violating parole. BISHOP
