There is something about a new year that makes that little inner voice scream out “change!” I am like the majority of you, I make a few New Year's resolutions so I will at least stick to one of them. I hate feeling like a failure. This year, I am determined to actually change the things in my life that I am not happy with. And being a person who really ponders the little, profound bits of wisdom that strong thinkers blurb out, I came across two quotes that made me rethink the way I would go about making my resolutions. And to begin with, I am not going to use the word resolution! “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence then, is not an act, but a habit.” - Aristotle “Men’s natures are alike; it is their habits that separate them.” - Confucius The first thing on my list to help me attain this goal of changing my habits was inspired by overhearing a couple episodes of “Winning the Lottery Changed my Life”. One routine I heard over and over again from the big money winners was that they all had written down exactly what they wanted to happen in their lives, over and over again. They thought about how much they were going to enjoy the money, even slept with checks they wrote to themselves for millions under their pillow. I know what you're thinking, “Tammy's been up for to many nights on deadline again,” but lets face it, they did win the lottery and, well, we haven’t. It’s the power of positive thinking.

And what happened to the Tammy from last year who said she could lose 40 pounds and did. I had stopped making myself publicly accountable for my goals. This time last year, I told you all I was going to lose 40 pounds and I did. One of the reasons I met my goal, when I had failed so many times in the past, was because I told my friends and family, no less then once a week, the truth about my progress. Yes, it was difficult when I didn’t do well, but it motivated me to do better. It's only a start, but I feel certain my life will be happier, in fact, I'm going to write that down. “My*life*will*be*happier,” and put it under my pillow. So good luck to you all and remember... “We first make our habits, and then our habits make us.” - John Dryden

As I contemplated this idea of changing my life at 7am, exhausted and with my third cup of black joe, it dawned on me what better way to start my life changing experience then to focus on the way I started and ended my day.

When you put the best staff, the best readers, best sponsors and their best customers in the same room, good things happen. Such was the case at the Port Hole pub in Port Orange on a recent scary Halloween night. Patrons – both costumed and not – were on hand to pick a winner from among the freakiest group of ghouls ever assembled. But two

The Goggles are a good party band because they can play cover music to suit just about any audience. For a relatively new group, that’s a plus, because these guys have a range that runs from the very old to the very new. They play a lot of classic rock, new rock and a lot of reggae. You’ll hear some numbers that you may not have heard in a while, like the Doobie Brothers’ “Long Train Running.” Lavender says their mix of music keeps things interesting for both their audience and the band, because “we don’t get bored doing the same songs all the time.” Their influences include favorites like Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix and Bob Marley. We decided to focus (get it?) on their origins for a moment, asking guitar man Rob Lavender how they came up with the band’s name. His answer was surprisingly frank. “Our bass man (Travis Tingler) said it just popped into his head.”

Tingler and Lavender started the Beer Googles last year after leaving another group called Swamp Water. Drummer Tim Mostert joined them to round out the three-piece band. In addition to the Port Hole (most Thursday nights), they have been seen at Atlantic Jack’s at Daytona’s Plaza Hotel and the Oasis Tiki Bar at the corner of A1A and International Speedway Blvd. Lavender says they especially enjoy private parties – playing music and having fun with friends in someone’s backyard. Teresa Lee Walton is a true “people pleaser.â€? Teresa sets her morals and values high. She’s an example of how hard work pays off when you add honesty and self respect into the mix. Teresa loves building sandcastles at the beach, digging in her garden, going on long drives, even 4-wheeling. She has a 10-year-old son Isaiah, and a 3 legged Lynx, Bear. Originally from Raleigh North Carolina, Teresa has been here for the last 4 years, and at Black Sheep since they opened. In fact, she was the first one hired and the first one behind the bar. She laughs when she recalls that she cut her hand and had to go to the hospital but came straight back to work. She loves working at Black Sheep and tells us, “I am proud to be here.â€? When it comes to her music choices, Teresa loves Audioslave, Godsmack and A Perfect Circle. Teresa also has a love for getting inked. Stop by and talk to Teresa, her passion is contagious! Drink Choices include a Snakebite Stella made with Stella and Magners Irish Cider or try a Black Sheep Runner 1 oz. Bacardi Rum 1 oz. Banana Liqueur 1 oz. Blackberry Brandy 1 oz. Spiced Rum Splash with OJ & Pineapple and Shake. Serve on the Rocks, Tall, With an Orange Garnish.
