YOLO: EAT LIKE A KID AND DRINK LIKE A KING! by Amanda Currin Everyone loves comfort food. It’s a perfect way to calm yourself after a breakup, when you’re feeling a little under the weather or just had a crappy day at work. All of us have a food or maybe even a cocktail that we crave on those kinds of days and it’s for that reason, you need to visit Yolo, located at 208 N. Woodland, Downtown Deland. Owners James and Elizabeth Carpenter have brought a truly unique concept to Deland, specializing in hand-crafted cocktails and gooey made-to-order gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches. From the time you walk in the door, you get the feeling of being among friends and family, which for most of us, brings comfort right away. The staff is friendly and they pride themselves on putting the customer first and providing nothing but top-quality service. Add to that, the delicious food and the one-of-akind cocktails that bar manager, Bobby Mercier and staff create and you have a winning com-

bination that isn’t like any other restaurant/bar in Deland. Yolo opened in August of 2016 and James and Elizabeth wanted to provide a place that gives its patrons an exceptional experience and bring the craft-cocktail movement from Ft. Lauderdale to Deland. As their website says, “Eat like a kid and drink like a King” and let me just say, the cocktails and the food that I enjoyed were fit for a queen! Their menu consists of only the freshest quality ingredients and their shelves are stocked with an extensive array of spirits which boasts a wall of single-malt scotches, premium bourbons, a large selection of Irish whiskey and even Japanese whiskey. The menu is all about true warm and comforting food. You need their signature mac and cheese, the brain child of manager Kevin Harper. Made from large whole blocks of cheese. A cheese lover’s dream, its loaded with gruyere, havarti, gouda, white cheddar, brie, and mozzarella. You can top it with lobster (of course) or you can choose their slow roasted pulled pork, tender beef brisket or spicy buffalo chicken to create an explosion of comfort flavors that’s even better than your grandma’s! It goes without saying (but we will) their signature sandwiches are top notch! Be sure to try “The Capone”; loaded with mozzarella, garlic pesto vine-ripened tomatoes. Or try another best seller “The Grotto”; topped high with bacon, tomato

and smoked gouda. If cocktails and craft beers are more your comfort, then Yolo delivers there as well. Yolo proudly boasts over one hundred whiskeys and a delicious cocktail menu featuring classic and original cocktails made with fresh ingredients and fresh squeezed juices. They offer inhouse infused tequila’s and over twenty beers on tap, mostly from Florida breweries and over thirty bottled beers. I had the pleasure of trying one of their best sellers; a smoked old-fashioned. Using Old Forrester Whiskey, the glass is smoked with wood planks of your choice. I recommend the cedar. This reflects the re-birth of cocktails of a different era and cornerstone of craft-cocktails, and it was amazing! If a margarita is more what wets your whistle, then ask for a Tommy’s Margarita.
