Warning lights for marriages

On average four out of ten married couples don’t make it to their ten year wedding anniversary. This is according to the latest stats released in May 2018 by STATS SA. In 2017 there was a slight increase in marriages with 139 512 couples that got married. Sadly, the divorce rate also rose by 0.3 %, with 25 390 divorces during this period. Like the previous year, more women than men filed for a divorce. Also, like the previous year, the average man got divorced at 44-years-old and the average woman at 40-years-old. The average lifespan of marriages for 26.9% of those who got divorced was between five and nine years, which is also the same as the previous year. Children are the collateral damage of divorce. In 2016, 55% of divorces affected children under 18-years-old, whereas 14 121 (55.6%) of divorces in 2017 affected children under 18-years-old. The shocking divorce rates aren’t limited to South Africa. Every thirteen seconds, a married couple in America gets divorced, which works out to around 2.5 million divorces each year. Approximately 50% of all marriages in the USA end in divorce. An average of 41% of first-time marriages, 60% of second marriages, and 73% of third-time marriages disintegrate. While there was only a slight decrease in marriages since 2015 (when there was a total of 138 627 marriages), one can not

ignore the decreasing numbers since 2014. In 2014, 150 852 people got married. Twenty years ago, 5% of couples lived together and 14% were married. Many of the unwed couples who live together become parents and 50% chance of an unplanned child being born from a couple who lives together but isn’t married. According to a Pew Research study, more than one of every two children whose parents live together without being married will see their parents break up by the age of nine years old. This is compared to one out of every five children who are born from married parents. Statistics show that about 60% of all couples living together will end up getting married. Those who lived together before they got married, however, have a 40% higher chance of getting divorced! An average of 43% of children will grow up without a father figure. So why do we get divorced? The top five reasons for divorce are cited as follows: a

lack of support (73%), too much conflict (56%), unfaithfulness (55%), married too young (46%) and unrealistic expectations (45%). Some couples cited more as one of these reasons that led to divorce. South African lawyers and experts have their own opinions, but conclude that the main reasons for divorce include the following: f inancial conflict, modern society’s consumerist mentality, a low threshold for discomfort, a decrease in stigmas that compel people to work on their marriages, a confusion of roles within the marriage and unrealistic expectations. Regardless of the reasons, marriages are threatened by divorce and the tendency to live together before marriage. The effect of divorce is also underestimated, as it is one of the most stressful experiences you can have. A new study titled Divorce and Death showed that broken marriages kill people as quickly as cigarettes. Your chance of dying is 23% higher if you are divorced!

Wilmé Steenekamp, clinical psychologist and sexologist, advises couples to adjust their behaviour and hold onto what works. “We know that healthy, intimate relationships are the best for adults and children. We need to learn how to accommodate others and make changes where necessary. Negotiate with each other to meet one another’s needs. Plan to build on your relationship.” Liezel van der Merwe, founder of SA Marriage Week, and Marriage Capsule, says: “Married couples that don’t act preventatively, run the risk of getting caught by surprise when it comes to the demands of marriage. This is why SA Marriage Week (from 1 – 7 September) is crucially important. It’s one week per year where you prioritise your marriage in your diary and work on this precious relationship – in a fun way and without pressure – before you have to reach out for help.” This year’s Marriage Week SA theme was: “Making sense of my, your and our life together.” Liezel explains that they want to encourage couples to understand each other better to communicate better and minimise conflict. “They gave couples the Marriage Capsule LOFS temperament test during Marriage Week. This is used to decipher each other’s temperaments and determine how to make the various temperaments work together well.” Those who have been through a divorce know that marriage isn’t easy and that divorce isn’t for sissies. This is why you need to do what you can to avoid becoming a statistic. Each year you can register for SA Marriage Week for free on You can also learn more about the LOFS temperament test. Drowning in debt? PAGE 2

How debt review works You’re not alone. Lots of South Africans are battling to meet their financial commitments. If your monthly repayments on your house, car, credit cards and accounts have risen so high in ARREARS or you’re facing blacklisting then the one option is to go into debt counselling or debt review. The debt review process was introduced in 2007 with the National Credit Act (NCA). The benefit is that, while you’re getting debt counselling and in the process of paying off your debts, legal action can’t be taken against you and your ASSETS cannot be taken if you co-operate with the process. Bear in mind that you can only take advantage of this process if you have a regular income to develop a reasonable repayment plan. How does Debt Review work? 1. Visit a Debt counsellor at Trust Debt

Solutions. 2. Give your payslip, your ID document and all your monthly repayments to the debt counsellor. You’ll also need to provide a monthly budget of other expense, such as food and petrol etc. 3. The debt counsellor will work out if you are over-indebted (if your payments are simply unaffordable on your current income). 4. The debt counsellor will crunch the numbers with you and work out how much you need to live on and what is available to repay debts. At this point, you’ll be able to officially apply for debt counselling,

For professional service contact Lulu or Lanie at 011 814 1210. See advert below left hand corner.

and the counsellor will tell you what the costs are which is usually taken from the first instalment and not upfront - an application fee; a restructuring fee; a legal fee that is needed for the consent order in the second month; and all of this MUST be explained to you thoroughly, and you MUST ask questions if you have any. 5. The debt counsellor will then contact all your credit providers and check that you’ve got all the amounts right. He or she will also get hold of the credit bureaus and tell them to list you as being under debt counselling once application is successful. This is NOT like a blacklisting – it’s a protection. It will be removed completely once you’ve paid everything off. If all the credit providers agree with the repayment proposals offered by the debt counsellor, a legal ‘consent order’ will be obtained. This means that the terms have been agreed to and can’t be changed independently by any of the credit providers. 6. Once agreement has been reached, the debt counsellor will give you your final repayment plan and also submit it to a Payment Distribution Agency. This agency will take a lump sum from you each month and split it up between the credit providers, according to the repayment plan. Debt Review Questions and Answers? Is Debt Review a good idea? Yes, though, in the long run, this is actually a very good thing, as it prevents you from racking up more debt and helps you become debt free. Does debt counselling affect credit score? Participating in credit counselling does not affect credit scores directly. ... A comment may be added to the accounts in your credit

report that are being repaid through a credit counselling program or debt management plan. So, lenders may see that fact. However, that comment won’t affect credit scores. Can I continue using my credit cards, accounts, etc.? No, you must stop using all credit facilities immediately. You may also not apply for any new credit agreements while under Debt Review. Is it necessary to meet up with the Debt Counsellor personally? YES, face to face consultation is more professional and understandable as for a lot of people does not always get the correct explanation over the phone and then end up not completing the process correctly, that will affect your name negatively. Can my House or Vehicle be protected if there is a judgement or summonsed issued? NO, we can only secure your assets if no Summons or Judgement was set out by court, we can still safe that house or vehicle with a 75% re-payment. What about interest rates? With an acceptable debt repayment plan, Trust Debt Solu-tions has mandates with the banks in South Africa, as well as a vast array of other Credit Pro-viders, to reduce in-terest rates as low as 0% for unsecured debt, and as low as 9.5% for secured debt. What about my bank debit orders? As soon as your application is ap-proved we will ar-range for the bank to stop all debit orders, you just have to sit back and see how we put your life at ease. Do not wait until it is too late, please act before any ac-tion is taken in or-der for Trust Debt to assist.

“How can I overcome my fear of the end of days?” Answer: The best way to overcome a fear of the end of days is to be spiritually prepared for it. First and foremost, you must have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ in order to have eternal life (John 3:16; Romans 10:9-10). Only through Him can you receive forgiveness of sin and have eternity with God. If God is your Father, there’s really nothing to worry about (Luke 12:32). Second, every Christian should live a life worthy of the calling we have in Christ. Ephesians 4:1-3 teaches, “Walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.” Knowing Christ and walking in His will go a long way towards diminishing fear of any kind. Third, Christians are told what will happen in the end, and it’s encouraging. First Thessalonians 4:1318 notes, But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about those who are asleep, that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope. For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep. For this we declare to you by a word from the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will not precede those who have fallen asleep. For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord. Therefore encourage one another with these words. Rather than fear the future, we are called to anticipate the future with joy. Why? In Christ, we will be “caught up” to meet Him and we “will always be with the Lord.” Further, Scripture says we do not need to fear Judgment Day: “By this is love perfected with us, so that we may have confidence for the day of judgment, because as he is so also are we in this world. There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love” (1 John 4:17-18). The apostle Peter reveals that, even if our future holds suffering, we need not fear: “But even if you should

suffer for righteousness’ sake, you will be blessed” (1 Peter 3:14). Peter and many other early believers endured much hardship and even death because of their faith in Christ. Suffering is not to be feared; it is a blessing when it is borne for the name of Jesus. Those who do not know Christ do not have the promise of peace for the future. For them, there is a real concern because they have not settled the issue of where they will spend eternity. Those who do know Christ do not fear the end of days. Instead, we strive to live a life worthy of our calling, live with conf i-dence, suffer patiently, anticipate Jesus’ return, and rest in the knowledge that our times are in His hands (Psalm 31:15). In the End Times there will be two groups of Christians! One Group with Fear and No Faith they will take the Mark of the Beast. And One Group with Total Faith and No Fear and they will not take the mark of the Beast and Receive the Seal / Mark of God on their Forehead. Jesus Says! Luk 12:32 Fear not, little flock; for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom. Luk 8:50 But when Jesus heard it, he answered him, saying, Fear not: believe only, and she shall be made whole. Mat 10:28 And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. Mat 10:31 Fear ye not therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows. Rev 1:17 And when I saw him, I fell at his feet as dead. And he laid his right hand upon me, saying unto me, Fear not; I am the first and the last:Rev 15:4 Who shall not fear thee, O Lord, and glorify thy name? for thou only art holy: for all nations shall come and worship before thee; for thy judgments are made manifest. Pastor Dirk, TruLight Radio XM.

All Gauteng state hospitals & clinics fail safety audit

Not a single state health facility in Gauteng has been assessed as complying with the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA). This bombshell information is revealed by Gauteng Health MEC Bandile Masuku who said that all facilities audited received either a noncompliance finding, such as a contravention and/or improvement compliance notice and fire contravention. ”The following facilities were the most noncompliant:Bheki Mlangeni Hospital, Far East Rand Hospital, Tembisa Hospital, Kopanong, Mamelodi, George Mukhari, Ekurhuleni district clinics, Johannesburg district clinics. Bheki Mlangeni was built only five years ago, but faces a host of serious safety risks that include the following: psychiatric patients escaping through fire escape doors who are a risk

to themselves and others. Chained exit doors risk to patients and employees in case of fire or emergency, roof leaks on rainy days. Air-conditionings are extremely hot in summer and extremely cold in winter due to design problem, also leads to cancellation of operations, accident and emergency overcrowded leading to cross infection records section overflowing with patient files, fire escape doors blocked existing f ire alarm systems are not functioning properly. Other hospitals at high risk include the following: Tembisa Hospital non-com-pliance in stores and main kitchen, and faulty pressure equipment. Far East Rand Hospital not compliant due to unavailabi-lity of emergency exit routes and fire detection system in most parts of the hospital. Mamelodi Hospital dysfunctional ventilation system in

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Gauteng has reliably learnt (among other proposals) that the ANC in the province wants to raise Income Tax in order to pay for e-tolls. This is unacceptable and will place further strain on our already overburdened residents, who are already struggling with the high cost of living. In addition to this, residents will also be taxed further in order to pay for the proposed National Health Insurance Fund that government wants to implement. The DA has been against the implementation of e-tolls since its inception, as it is an unfair tax burden on our residents who are struggling to make ends meet. Furthermore, motorists are at risk of infringing the Administrative Adjudication

of Road Traffic Offices Amendment Act for not paying their e-tolls. While truck drivers are at risk of losing their licence as they will be f ined R500 and one demerit point, for every gantry they pass without paying e-tolls. The Minister of Transport, Fikile Mbalula was expected to make an announcement on e-tolls last week, but we are still waiting to hear what the resolution on the matter is. It is clear that the ANC has no intention of getting rid of e-tolls and that residents in Gauteng will continue to pay for some-thing they do not want. The DA will conti-nue to call on Premier David Makhura to launch an inter-governmental dispute on e-tolls and instead the fuel levy should be used to replace e-tolls and not bale out SOEs.

accident and emergency unit. Kopanong Hospital employees at risk of being trapped inside the freezer, leaking roofs, peeling walls, plugs in wards not SABS compliant, redundant fire hydrants, storm water and sewer pipes frequently blocking. These are alarmingly high safety risks and worse, we only know the risks in those facilities that have been audited, whereas most of them have not.

Raise Income Tax

Murders on females & kids

South Africa will step up policing and provide additional funding to combat gender-based violence, after two days of protests over crimes against women, said President Cyril Ramaphosa. The demonstrations, which were triggered by the killing last week of 19-year-old University of Cape Town student Uyinene Mrwetyana, saw about 10 000 people assemble outside parliament in the city centre on Thursday. A day earlier, more than 1 000 gathered outside a World Economic Forum event the city is hosting. A woman is murdered every three hours in South Africa, and more than 40 000 rapes are reported every year, police data

shows. The national murder rate of 35.2 per 100 000 people is more than six times higher than the US. “This is the time to come together as a nation to confront our problems directly,” Ramaphosa said in a televised address. “These killings have caused great pain and outrage throughout the country because acts of such brutality have become all too common in our communities.” Ramaphosa will propose to cabinet that all crimes against women and children attract harsher minimum sentences. The state will oppose bail for those accused of rape. A national register of offenders will list all men convicted of acts of violence against women and children.

CRIME PREVENTION PERSONAL SAFETY – WHEN TRAVELLING Keep your doors locked at all times. Unlocked doors could result in hijacking, assault and rape. Keep all windows closed or only one-third open to prevent someone getting the door open or snatching something from inside the car. WHAT TO DO IF YOU ARE FORCED OFF THE ROAD When a vehicle is forced off the road, the intention is usually robbery or assault, which sometimes culminates in murder. If you are threatened by a smaller, less powerful vehicle, simply drive away at speed. If not, don‘t stop, but rather push back and bash into the other car until both vehicles are damaged. If you are forced from the road and have to stop, put the vehicle into reverse and reverse away if you are blocked from the front. Then change into first and drive towards the attacker as soon as he walks around his vehicle towards you. If you are forced off the road by two vehicles, drive up a farm road where two vehicles cannot drive side by side. Blow on the hooter and try to reach the farm. If you are faced with a closed farm gate, don‘t try to drive through it; it will only damage you vehicle. Rather drive over the wire fence. If you have a gun, use it as effectively as possible within the framework of the law. Failing to do so, could have very serious consequences. WHAT TO DO IF YOU ARE ATTACKED IN YOUR VEHICLE Criminals can gain access to your vehicle in three ways, namely: They hitchhike and you give them a lift. They simply climb in at a stop street or traffic light (if you have left your doors unlocked). They climb in and lie down behind the seat if you leave your car unlocked while it is unattended. Once a criminal is inside, he will use a knife or other weapon to threaten you. In a city or urban area he will usually demand that you drive him somewhere. In such a situation, causing a minor accident is a possible escape route. You could, for example, gently bump into the vehicle in front of you. The hijacker will usually flee at this point. Don‘t stop on the open road. Drive fast so that the attacker realises that his life will also be in danger if he attacks you and you crash. Another option is to brake violently at high speed. You will be prepared for this and have braced yourself against the momentum. The attacker will be thrown violently forward, and probably lose control of the situation. You should then do the following: If the vehicle is still moving, take his weapon away from him. Open the passenger door and push him out. If the weapon is a gun and it is loaded, use it as effectively as possible within the framework of the law. Alternatively, defend yourself with anything you can get hold of. Hit him on the windpipe. Corruption in Gauteng SAPS on the rise and the highest It is shocking to learn that there has been a marked increase in corruption within the South African Police Service (SAPS). It is disappointing that the leadership in SAPS is not doing enough to curb corruption within their organisation. This information was revealed in the 2019 Analysis of Corruption Trends Report released by Corruption Watch. Furthermore, the report indicates that for the f irst time corruption in the police sector has overtaken other sectors like schools, health and local government. According to the report, abuse of power is at 35.7% and bribery is at 30.6% in the police sector. In an earlier report released by Corruption Watch in June, Corruption in Uniform: When cops become criminals focusing only on corruption in the police sector, it was revealed that Gauteng had 52.8% corruption, the highest in the country. Goverment has always said that corruption within SAPS must be rooted out as a matter of urgency, in order to create an honest and

a professional police service. Trust between residents and the police have broken down because of corruption. Gauteng residents must feel safe in their homes, places of work and on the street. The only way this can be achieved is if there is a good working relationship between residents. Corruption would be easy to get rid of in SAPS if only the good cops are willing to arrest the minority bad element in their midst, however, this begins with good leadership and political will. The government must ensure that SAPS is professionalised, corruption is eradicated and that the police competency be given to the province in order to better address local needs. In addition, the MEC for Community Safety, Faith Mazibuko, must look at appointing a Provincial Police Ombudsman, as is the case in the DA-governed Western Cape, to resolve complaints and ensure effective community oversight over policing.

Splish splash The City of Ekurhuleni’s community swimming pools are ready to welcome patrons for the beginning of the swimming season. The Spring/Summer season brings with it the need to deep into a crystal clean pool for a splish splash. As such, the City’ pools have been rehabilitated and renovated while others are being built from scratch to prepare for the swimming season. In April 2019, Executive Mayor Cllr Mzwandile Masina officially handed over a beautiful swimming pool to the community of Eden Park. Meanwhile, the Duduza swimming pool is still under construction. Nigel swimming pool is still closed. The City has resolved to keep designated community pools opened for the upcoming festive season. Pools will only be closed on 25 and 26 December as well as on 1 January 2020. Ekurhuleni has three types of pool categories with different facilities. Entrance fee to community pools category A – R 15, category B – R 10 and category C – R 5.
