Police divers search for missing fisherman Magda Maritz Police divers searched the freezing water of Spaarwater Dam outside Duduza tirelessly for two days, hoping to recover the body of a local fisherman, believed to have drowned on the evening of June 30. The search for Mangaliso Mfele began in the afternoon on July 5, after some of his personal belongings were discovered on the banks of the dam. According to his friend, he was reported missing to the

Duduza Police Station over the weekend, after he failed to return home the previous night. He allegedly went to check on his fishing nets in a small canoe around 19:00 on Friday evening, but was never seen again. Police divers conducted free dive searches and a sweeping line search in the vicinity of where the fishing nets were found, but temporarily called off the search around 18:00 on July 5, due to bad light and

weather conditions. They returned to comb the waters the following day and around midday they discovered Mfele’s small canoe under the murky water.

At the time of going to print, police spokesperson Sgt Harry Manaka conf irmed that despite an extensive search, the man is yet to be found.

From the desk of Rev Ray Goddess

Rev Goddess, Heidelberg Methodist Church We need to put the most expensive effort (sacrifice) into our families and friends relationships so that we can make sure that they work and do not “fail” after a few days, months or years. But here is another thought that I would like you to think of. We need to realize that when we put “cheap” effort into our relationship with God it IS going to fail. We need to understand that God also demands sacrifice from us, sacrifice in time, effort and life. God wants ALL of us and not just a part of us. So here is a challenge for all of us. Take the next month and put ALL your effort and sacrif ice into improving your relationship with God (including doing stuff for Him and not just reading the Bible and going to church). At the end of the month reflect on the time and see how your relationship with God has improved and see also how your life changes. Goedkoop is duur koop – give your all to Jesus and reap the blessings from Him.

Some of us are forced to “buy cheap” because we cannot afford to pay any more money for the item we need. I remember the first car I bought; it was an Opel Kadet that could barely go. I knew that I would have to maintain it regularly to keep it on the go. I knew that the maintenance was going to be expensive. But I also knew that I could not afford a more expensive car. At the same time I can remember on a number of occasions when I have bought cheap purely because I did not want to pay more for an item and all too often I found that the item I purchased did not last or did not do what it was supposed to do. A few months ago our swimming pool motor started to make a noise and the bearings needed to be changed. We bought the best bearings we could f ind in Heidelberg and a friend graciously helped and put the new bearings into the pool motor. He did a great job, nothing wrong with his workmanship. A few months later we were amazed to find that the motor was once again making a noise and we had to replace the bearings again – the quality of the bearings we had purchased was just not good enough. It is easy to do things over (even although it costs us a lot of extra money) when we are looking at materialistic items. But when we are looking at our lives and the life of our family and friends we need to draw that line and understand that the same principle applies to our life. Put a little effort into your marriage and you will find that your marriage struggles. Put a little effort into the bringing up of your children and we find that we are faced with more challenges from our children than we should.

130 Combined years behind bars Magda Maritz Four men arrested on several charges including armed robbery and attempted murder, appeared in the Nigel Regional Court on July 6, where they were found guilty by Regional Court magistrate Mr Juan Voogt. The robbery occurred at a convenient store in Devon in October 2014, during which a man was shot and injured. Sameul Ndlovu (26), Sibusizo Melazo (28), Lucky Mhlongo (31) and Christiano Mahongo (38) fled the scene, but were soon apprehended by members of the police. In delivering his sentence Mr Voogt commended the police for the manner in which they handled the case, from the moment they responded to the way they assisted the state prosecutor Mr Bradford Dias, in presenting a well excecuted case in court. During the court proceedings, it was discovered that the fourth accused (Mahongo) had two previous convictions, while the others were found to be first time offenders. The charges brought against the suspects are as follow: Count 1: robbery under aggravated circumstances of first complainant;

Count 2: robbery under aggravated circumstances of second complainant; Count 3: robbery of a fire-arm; Count 4: attempted murder; Count 5: possession of a f ire-arm through fourth accused for purpose of robbery; Count 6: possession of a fire-arm that belongs to complainant; Count 7: pointing of a fire-arm; Count 8: attempted murder of a police officer; Count 9: reckless driving. Sameul Ndlovu was found guilty on counts 1, 2, 5 and 9 and sentenced to 30 years imprisonment (counts 5 and 9 to be served concurrently with count 2). Sibusizo Melazo was found guilty on counts 1, 2 and 5 and sentenced to 30 years imprisonment (counts 2 and 5 to be served concurrently). Lucky Mhlongo was found guilty on counts 1, 2, 5 and 6 and sentenced to 30 years imprisonment (counts 5 and 6 to be served concurrently with count 2), and Christiano Mahongo was found guilty on all counts and sentenced concurrently to 40 years behind bars (counts 2, 3, 5, 7 and 8 to be served concurrently). All four were declared unfit to possess a fire-arm.

Vroue stasiebevelvoerder swaai septer

Kolonel Amanda Viljoen

Meet Nigel Police’s new leader Former Vispol Commander at SAPS Ratanda Lt Col Senzangakhona Mohale has been appointed as the new station commander at SAPS Nigel, with effect from July 1. The local police station has been left without a full-time station commander following the promotion and transfer of Lt Col Thete in 2016. Lt Col Mohale is by no means a policing

novice, as he boasts 27 years in the police force and has played a pivotal role in the fight against crime in different ways since his career started in Duduza in 1990. He became a police captain in 2005 and was initially transferred to Germiston Police Station and thereafter to Boksburg North Police Station in 2008. In 2010 he was transferred to Brakpan and the following year to Tsakane Police Station where he

R500 million irregular contracts extended Security contracts for Gauteng hospitals and contracts that cost more than R500 million a year have been extended since September last year despite a forensic audit finding that they were irregularly awarded. DA Gauteng Shadow Health MEC, Jack Bloom in a media statement on July 5, said that according to a written reply by the Gauteng Health MEC Gwen Ramokgopa to some of his questions in the Gauteng Legislature, the contracts were awarded on 1 October 2014 and were supposed to end on 31 September 2016. The contracts cover 34 hospitals and 188 clinics, and cost R525 million from October 2015 to September 2016. According to Bloom, Ramokgopa said that according to legal advice, the department gave implicated companies an opportunity to make representations. Blood explained that his concern is that 16 security companies that should not have qualified to get contracts are still guarding hospitals and clinics nine months after the original two-year contract expired. He added that the Department claims that they could not get money back from the companies because legally they had enjoyed their services, but Bloom asked the question: “why were their contracts extended? This is a very unsatisfactory way to deal with irregularly awarded contracts.” New security contracts should be awarded in an open process that ensures competence and best value for money,” Bloom concluded.

remained until last year. This dedicated police officer proceeded to become Vispol Commander at SAPS Ratanda earlier this year. Lt Col Mohale resides in Duduza, father of three, said he was looking forward to taking over the reins at Nigel Police Station. He urged community members to join forces with Nigel CPF to help the police fight crime. Lt Col Senzangakhona Mohale has taken over the reins as station commander at SAPS Nigel with effect from July 1.

Child rapist gets 3 x life sentences Magda Maritz 51 Year old Joseph Paseletso Mokoena heard the grunt of justice, when sentence was handed down against him by Mr Juan Voogt in the Nigel Regional Court on July 7. Mokoena stood trial on three counts of rape. This follows extensive court proceedings which initially started soon after his arrest in September 2014.The complainant at the time was 13 years old and the case was first heard in the Regional Court of Heidelberg, where the girl’s mother and accomplish in the rape case, was sentenced to a few years behind bars. Mokoena’s case was later transferred to Nigel where he, on 14 August 2015, pleaded not guilty on all three counts of rape. The trial commenced on 4 May 2016. During the court proceedings on July 7, the defence lawyer argued among others that Mokoena was a first time offender and that

the absence of physical injuries to the complainant makes good grounds for a lesser sentence than the mandatory sentence imposed by the state. In his argument, state prosecutor Bradford Dias rejected this and said allowing Mokoena’s version of “I could have used more violence...” would be contradictory to the Children’s Act (2005) and Children’s Amendment Act (2007), thus not protecting children against violence. He continued by saying the court has an obligation to send a clear message to perpetrators of such heinous crimes, that they will be punished severely accordingly to the law. Mr Dias reminded the court that Mokoena was supposed to be a father figure to the child and that he was placed in a position of trust, yet he raped her numerous times. As a result of this continuous sexual onslaught, she was

no longer attending school. After considering both arguments, Mr Voogt reminded Mokoena that rape is a serious offence and the fact that the mother closed the child’s mouth while she was being raped, highlights the reign of terror in that house. He also mentioned his disapproval of the probation off icer’s written recommendation for a five year sentence and said by no means would this justify what has been done to the child nor would it send a clear message to other

perpetrators. “This would be a travesty to justice. Children are a society’s most valuable asset, as they are the future. Society therefore has a duty to protect and invest in those children,” he said. In handing down judgement, Mr Voogt sentenced Mokoena to life imprisonment on all three counts of rape. He was also declared unfit to possess a fire-arm and the court ordered that his name be recorded in the National Register for Sexual Offenders.

Be warned of creative criminals A house robbery occurred in Mare Street, Heidelberg on July 5. According to police spokesperson Capt Thivhulawi Tshilate, the robbery occurred around 10:15, when two suspects who pretended to be local service providers, overpowered the domestic worker inside the house. They tied her hands and feet with cable ties and proceeded to ransack the house. “The suspects allegedly persuaded the domestic worker into opening the gate, by pretending to be local service providers,” Capt Tshilate said. The suspects made off with a flat screen television, an undisclosed amount of money and jewellery. They were driving a white Nissan X-Trail, registration number unknown. Police are appealing to anyone with information on the robbery or

whereabouts of the suspects to phone the nearest Police Station or 08600 10111 or send an SMS to 32211. Police are also warning residents of Nigel, Heidelberg and Dunnottar to be on the lookout for a white Ford Bantam bakkie with three or more occupants that could be linked with several house robberies the past few weeks. According to the police, the suspects go around houses and ring the doorbell. When the domestic worker opens the door, the suspects would pretend to be repair technicians or local service providers and they would mention the house owner’s name to the domestic worker. In some instances, they would even fake a telephone call to the house owner to persuade and convince the domestic worker into opening the door.

Once inside, they would tie up the domestic worker and ransack the house for electronic goods, money and jewellery. The police have urged home owners to inform and educate domestic workers and gardeners of this type of criminal modus operandi.

Police hunt for cop killer Police are on the hunt for this man, believed to be Bongumusa Madondo who shot and killed a police officer from SAPS Vosloorus around 05:00 on July 6. It is also believed that he escaped from Johannesburg Court about 7 weeks ago and is linked to ATM bombings in Gauteng. Warrant officer Sipho Mthetwa was shot and killed while on routine patrol in Vosloorus. He and other officers spotted a suspicious vehicle fitted with false registration numbers and on approaching the vehicle, one of three suspects jumped out of the vehicle and opened fire, instantly killing Mthetwa. Two suspects were arrested, while Madondo managed to flee on foot. He is considered armed and extremely dangerous. Police are appealing to anyone with information on the whereabouts of this suspect to phone the nearest Police Station.

CRIME PREVENTION HOW VULNERABLE IS YOUR HOME? The first step in formulating a safety plan is to find out how vulnerable your home is to burglars. Some houses are more vulnerable than others as a result of where they are situated, on a corner or in a particular area. The security requirements for such homes are obvious higher. A security system is never stronger than its weakest link, and the security of other homes in the area must also be taken into account. If your level of security is lower than your neighbours‘, your house will be broken into first. The vulnerability of a home is determined by a number of factors: · Isolation or distance from other houses. · The quality of street-lighting. · Whether there are bus-stops, railway stations, shopping complexes or other places where people gather, in the vicinity. · How close the house is to vacant land or undeveloped plots. · Suburbs where few or no residents are at home during the day are at greater risk because criminals can go about their business unobserved. · The presence or absence of home security. The homeowner‘s personal level of security awareness is probably the most important factor. Next: How vulnerable is your home 2?

Vissie langasems vaar goed
