One of the biggest celebrations in our village is the feast of St. Paraskevi. It is the feast celebrated in the most villages of our municipality, where traditional festivals take place. Chomorites from every part of Greece came to worship the icon of the Blessed St. Paraskevi. On the eve of the feast was celebrated with the Great Vespers and the icon procession round the church.

Dear Mr. President, I'm pleased whenever I browse the quarterly newspaper of your Association, THE VOICE OF CHOMORIS." And for that, I thank you very much. Although Leptokarytis in origin, I find many interesting and today I want to dwell on the article „The doors of Chomoris „ by My dear doctor friend Epaminondas Patouchas. I want to congratulate my friend Peter for his very clever and original idea, but also the very beautiful photos. This article intrigued me to write this letter. Along with your letter please find enclosed a few quatrains of a poem I wrote in October 2011, for a home of my immediate family environment. It is a closed bolt, a gate with centennial history. Where, in the yard, dwelled the last century, a poor large family (5 boys and 2 girls). Hard-working and uneducated parents raised their children with many deprivations. Their children had but one virtue, a great zeal for learning and progress. Over time they established themselves in society and write their own history as senior banking executives and successful professionals. On December 14, 1947, the family mourns the unjust death of the leader of the family, (29 year old lieutenant pilot) when performing combat mission recognition with a Harvard plane, crashed due to poor visibility on the hill Kokosis area Kastania Ioannina and the late uncle left his last breath at the altar of the fatherland. Much has taken place over the years and today a sealed bolt ends a whole story. Sealing a home, which 30 years ago changed householders, and as abandoned, orphaned as stubble in the plain, is fading out. With special appreciation, George Varelas

We have gathered here tonight in this beautifully landscaped space, to celebrate the inauguration of our cultural center. The dedication of this edifice as a cultural center (folklore museum and small library) is a very important and joyful event and all of us Chomoritans should feel proud for the noble causes for which it was established. And these causes are noble and scared if one tries to understand them in the context of the opinions of many intellectual and prudent men of the past. One of them was the French revolution intellectual Victor Hugo who said that ''he who opens a school closes a prison.'' Our own Greek intellectuals like Cosmas Aitolos and the great classicist Adamantios Korais having acquired a deep knowledge of the meaning of Education for the liberation of man from the bonds of ignorance and barbarism, dedicated their lives building schools and preaching that education and culture generally liberate humanity. Others said that museums are the guards of human memory and their purpose is to preserve the cultural heritage of a nation for the benefit of society. Indeed, where can one experience past memories and appreciate the culture and traditions better that his ancestors passed down to him than in a museum with objects on display that his ancestors used in their daily life? Where can one feel and experience the splendor of Greek civilization and culture (ancient byzantine and modern) than in the library that would offer him the opportunity to read the books that have been written for these civilizations? Where would someone be able to admire and follow up the progress of modern technology and the achievements of the human mind than in the environment of a museum like the Smithsonian institute in Washington DC (the comparison of course is figurative)? Our small cultural center with its small library and its small folklore museum with exhibits related to our village's rural and stock breeding background will always be for all of us but especially for our younger generations an incontrovertible witness of the creativity and the hard work that their ancestors had to do trying to make a living with technically primitive tools. It is an honor to see a family's traditional clothes and personal possessions in a museum. A petroleum lantern that was used by our mothers and grandmothers to do their handmade artifacts at night, will remind us how difficult life was then without electricity but at the same time how simple and rewarding without electrical bills, special taxes and Memorandums. A spindle, a distaff or a loom will always remind us of the patience, love and proudness with which our grandmothers knitted and wove, like faithful Penelopes, their handmade creations for their daughter's dowry and their family's needs. Shepherding tools, cooking utensils and other folklore items of our heritage museum will be always an indelible testimony of our villages past history. One thing that should especially be emphasized here tonight and should not escape the attention of all participants is that what motivated the departed Dimitrios Lymberis to donate this edifice to serve as a primary school of our village and us the Skiadas Brothers to transform it into a cultural center was neither to show off wealth nor feelings of arrogance and selfishness, but rather feelings of unselfish love for our village and our country. A love which according to St. Paul '' / " '' For us the immigrant Chomoritans who have spent most of our lives in foreign lands and generally all the Greek immigrants that always live with the Odyssian nostalgia of returning to mother land, this love for our country, becomes an unfulfilled yearning and equally as strong as death. Let us for a moment remember how Homer in his Odyssey describes this yearning '' A ) $ _ Ο ! # ! # Ο ''.Ody.A 55 ''but Odysseus yearning to see smoke coming up from his island wishes to die''. In ancient Greece the love for one's country was greater than the love of one's parents. This is attested by the wise words of Socrates to his disciple Crito who was trying to convince his teacher to escape from prison and thus to avoid the penalty of death that was imposed upon him by the city of Athens. With his typical philosophical and stoic attitude he says to his student Crito „Either you are so wise, or it has escaped your understanding that above one's mother and father and all other ancestors the most precious , most respected ,sacred is one's country according to the volition of the gods and the opinion of prudent men .Does it escape your attention that we should respect our country and abide by its laws and we should take care of it when it needs us even more than our fatherK? This kind of unconditional love for country and family fills the hearts of all Greek immigrants today wherever they live. In our demotic poetry (X ) living in foreign lands is characterized as being worse than being orphan, the bitterness and love „ T & , , , , / ( ' & ''living in foreign lands, orphanage, bitterness and love, all four were measured to find out that being an immigrant was the worst thing. One would have expected that the difficulties that an immigrant faces in foreign lands would diminish his interest and love for his motherland: yet the opposite is true. Instead of diminishing it, they make it stronger and elevate it into the sphere of unselfishness and sacrifice. The histories of Modern Greek immigrants attest to this. Most of Greece's benefactors after the revolution of 1821 were Greek immigrants. During the Balkan wars 1912-13, thousands of young Greek immigrants left their jobs and families to come back as volunteers to fight and sacrifice themselves for their country. Let us try to imitate our ancestors and let us put love for our village and our country above ourselves. In these difficult times, our country needs everybody's love but above all the love of our politicians. Let us also embrace our cultural center with love and togetherness for the sake of our children and grandchildren who will inherit it. With love Panos Skiadas
