Monte Carlo Night Draws a Full House This year’s Monte Carlo Night attracted over 170 people! They gathered to try their collective hands at casino tables for a host of raffle prizes. Attendees were able to test their luck at Black Jack, Craps,Texas Hold ‘em, and Roulette.

People also enjoyed delicious appetizers & desserts, drinks, a raffle, karaoke, and were entertained by illusionist David Pepka.

It was gratifying to see a range of age groups represented among the attendees that night. The night had a great atmosphere as people were having an amazing time!

Proceeds from the event go to benefit the day camp scholarship fund and a new STEM cabin at Green Hills.

A Message from the CEO - Jennifer Ross Thank you for reading my column today because I want to share how important you are to me. I believe the most valuable assets of the JCC are the people who come inside every day whether you are here to work, workout, to socialize, to be cared for and learn in our ELC, to be educated at the Silver Academy, to participate or attend a sporting event, attend a meeting or cultural event, or whatever positive event brought you inside.

I knew many of you prior to becoming CEO and have enjoyed meeting many of you since then. Even if we haven’t met yet, your wellbeing and contentment, particularly as it relates to your involvement in the JCC and in our community, are of the utmost importance to me. It is not just my job, it is my passion.

Security is critical in any public facility and sometimes needs additional attention when the word “Jewish” is part of the institution’s name. I want you to feel safe every time you enter our doors. In that vein, in February, I sent an email to everyone on our distribution list reminding you about a policy that has been in place, but not uniformly enforced, until recently.

In case you don’t receive email, members are required to scan their ID card every time they enter the building and guests must sign in and show photo ID. In an attempt to be personable and to help encourage participation, the emails were sent with everyone’s first name in the greeting. This led to some unintentional confusion where some people thought they were specifically being contacted regarding their own compliance and that was not the case. Thank you to the many people who reached out to me for clarification and for sharing feedback and concerns about the way things were handled previously. In many cases, it was the first opportunity for dialogue with you and I look forward to getting your input on other issues of interest or concern. I want to thank you again personally for your part in helping ensure your and everyone’s safety. Our intention is to balance security while also being a welcoming destination. Pinat Ivrit For this edition, I thought we can discuss the word “Purim” and its origin and some fun facts about how we celebrate it. ‫םיִּוּפ‬ ‫ ר‬is of course our holiday where we commemorate the saving ‫םיִרּוּפ‬ of the Jewish people from Haman, who was planning to kill all the ‫מגילת אסתר‬‎ Jews.

This took place in the ancient Persian ‫םיִּוּפ‬ ‫ ר‬Empire ruled at the time

by King Achashverosh (presumed to be Artaxerxes I of Persia). The ‫רתסאאסתר‬‎ ‫מגילת‬‎ Megillat Ester) and story is recorded in the Book of Esther (‫תליגמ‬ is celebrated on the 14th of Adar. ‫ פּו‬meaning fate, since The word Purim stems from the word PUR, ‫ִרּוּפר‬, Haman randomly selected the date for when the massacre of the Jews will take place on the 13th of Adar. However, thanks to Mordechai and his niece and adopted daughter, Esther, the order was rescinded and instead a new order by the king was issued allowing the Jews to

protect themselves on that day. On the set day of the 13th of Adar, the Jews defended themselves successfully all over the kingdom.

However, within the walled city capital of Shushan, Esther asked and received permission for the Jews to continue to protect themselves for one more day, the 14th of Adar. This led to an interesting tradition of celebrating Purim within walled cities on the 15th of Adar, one day later. This tradition is maintained today only in Jerusalem where until today Purim is celebrated one day later than the rest of Israel.

One other interesting fact about Purim, relates the Megillah itself, which was the only book of the bible that was not found in the Dead Sea Scrolls, leading researchers to theorize that the authors of the Scrolls did not accept Purim as one of the holy books and it was not celebrated by that sect.

Annual HBG JCC Spin-A-Thon Raises Money for Speranza Animal Rescue

The Harrisburg JCC’s Sports and Fitness Department recently held its annual Spin-A-Thon. Each year the event, which brings together Harrisburg JCC spinners, raises money for a different cause. This year 18 individuals participated in the three hour event that featured sessions led by five different instructors. This year’s instructors included Arthur Kravitz, Michele Ruth, Gina McDonald, Rebecca Doctrow, and Jon Cohen.

Spin-A-Thon organizer Linda Skulsky commented, “We love to do a spin-a-thon every year to support very worthy causes, highlight our amazing spin instructors, and have fun socializing with fellow spinners and friends.”

The 18 spinners raised $1,390.50 for Speranza Animal Rescue.

Located in Mechanicsburg, PA the Speranza Animal Rescue has helped hundreds of dogs over the last four years. They have helped dogs that needed facial reconstruction surgery, lifesaving procedures, leg amputations, and more. They are committed to saving the dogs

that no one else will; the abused, neglected, and ones in need of much veterinary care.

“Each year when the JCC performs the Spin-a-thon it feels like a holiday – A group of people getting together to give their best effort and attitude and all for charity. I was smiling at the start and it was even bigger at the end. I look forward to this opportunity every year to mix my physical dimension with my spiritual dimension – nothing like exercising for the good of another group,” Spin-A-Thon participant and instructor Gina McDonald said.

The Sports and Fitness Department encourages all JCC members to come try out a spin class. “Our instructors are top-notch and will help to ensure that participants get a tough workout while teaching proper form in order to keep you safe” stated Terri Travers, Sports and Fitness Director. State Wide Adoption Network Winter Conference Update By: Megan Helpin, MSW student at JFS As a graduate student intern at JFS in the AdoptionLinks program, I was pleased to be invited to attend the State Wide Adoption and Permanency Network (SWAN) winter meeting. I am excited about the educational opportunities I have found here, and this meeting added greatly to my learning about children in the foster care system.

The SWAN Winter Meeting opening presentations I was involved with were on disproportionality in the child welfare system, meeting the educational needs of children in care and bullying. These were not only relevant to me as a JFS intern, but also meaningful for the general public.

to maintain as much consistency in their lives as possible. This includes keeping the child enrolled at the same school, if feasible and appropriate. Foster parents can learn more about the educational regulations for foster children by researching the Every Student Succeeds Act of 2015. Third, children in foster care are at a higher risk for being bullied. They are the outsider moving into a new school or community. Therefore, foster parents should familiarize themselves with their foster student’s school’s bullying policies, keep in contact with school staff, and maintain constant communication with their foster child about their experience at school.

Within the child welfare system, disproportionality means overrepresentation of certain racial and ethnic populations in their system when compared with the general populations. We should strive for equity among people.Equality treats everyone the same.

Equity acknowledges differences among individuals, so everyone can have the same opportunities. If three people of varying stature needed a boost to see over a fence, giving them all the same size ladders illustrates equality, regardless of whether it increased their view. Giving each person the ladder height they need to see over the fence is equity.

Did you know that students with an individualized education plan (IEP) can stay in school until they turn 21? Students who follow this course of action are still allowed to walk in the graduation ceremony with their original class.I learned how parents can advocate for their children if they are being bullied and a school does not seem responsive. The PA Department of Education has a bullying prevention consultation hotline, which can be reached at 1.866.716.0424.

For foster parents and child welfare professionals, the sessions I attended underscored the challenges faced by the approximately 15,000 children in foster care in Pennsylvania. First and foremost, regardless of the race of foster parents or their foster children, families should make an effort to become familiar with the practices and traditions of their foster children, and help them feel like their culture is valued. This sensitivity is compatible with, and even exemplifies, the increasing value we place on the role of diversity in our society.

Catching Up with Classmates: David Leopold After nine years at the Yeshiva, I went to Susquehanna High School and then the University of Pittsburgh. With a degree in theater history and administration I thought I would follow my twin brother John out west and run a small theater company in the Bay Area. But as with so many things, life intervened. A cancelled meeting in Bucks County led me to visit with my reat Aunt Rae Solowey, whose husband, Ben, was an internationally renowned painter. They had created a paradise for themselves and his art on a 34 acre farm in a little village in Bucks County.

Rae was EstherYaverbaum, my grandmother’s sister. Esther’s husband, my grandfather, Irving, had helped to found the Yeshiva with his longtime friend Rabbi Silver. Esther was a force of nature unto herself, and she was delighted when I started to visit my Aunt Rae. Long story short, Rae was looking for someone to take on the farm and keep it open for future generations to enjoy. Although reluctant at first, I did agree, and 25 years ago, we started presenting regular exhibitions of Ben Solowey’s work and his contemporaries in Ben’s remarkable studio on the property. My research on Ben lead to his celebrated “Theater Portraits,” charcoal drawings from life of performers on Broadway, opera, film and dance that appeared in the New York Times and the Herald Tribune. I noticed that often Ben’s drawings appeared alongside the work of Al Hirschfeld. I decided to write to Hirschfeld to see if he had any recollections of Ben, which led to an invitation to visit with him at his home and studio in New York.

Soon I found myself working as his personal archivist, visiting him at least once a week in his studio for 13 years. When he died in 2003, I was asked to work

for the new non-profit foundation created in his name and I worked for the next 12 years alongside his wife, Louise. I am now the Al Hirschfeld Foundation’s Creative Director. In the last 25 years, I have curated a number of exhibitions on Hirschfeld’s work, written two books, and number of articles on different aspects of his work. I have also continued to organize exhibitions and write books on a wide variety of artists including well known figures such as Irving Berlin and the Berenstain Bears, as well as a many underappreciated artists for museums around the country and in Europe.

I now live on the Solowey farm in Bucks County, and go to New York once a week for work. I was fortunate to attend the Yeshiva when Rabbit Silver was a living breathing part of what it was about, and the teachers at that time were a group of interesting individuals who poured their heart and soul into our education. Ellie Koplovitz, who taught both second and seventh grades, was a favorite as was her sister, Pearl Hoffman who taught 5th grade. Rabbi Stein, Rabbi Goldberg and Mar Ghadsi were instrumental in my Jewish education. It seemed like such a small community in the 1970s when I went to the Yeshiva, yet we lived in a Jewish world. We walked to school (I was even a member of the school safety patrol) and there were so many sukkahs to visit right in the neighborhood. I always felt that my Yeshiva education really gave me a leg up when I entered realm of public schools, and the sense of community has remained a vital part of my life ever since.

He was Campaign Director for the $12 million Capital Campaign to build the WITF Public Media Center. Under his leadership, WITF won national public broadcasting awards for promotion and development in 14 different years and, in 1990, he was named the first-ever PBS Development Professional of the Year. This dessert is sure to be a hit whenever a crowd gathers (and my large family gathers quickly when the aroma seeps through the house). I found this recipe when my children were young. The first time I prepared the dish I knew it would be a hit. The scent filled the house almost the way it does in cartoons if you can imagine. I’ve met few people able to resist the sweet smell of almonds in the air.

Making almond squares became one of my tactics for well-mannered children. It was the best way to get them back in the house and on good behavior. Whenever they come home now, they know to look for the almond squares in the freezer. I am not sure how long ago I found this recipe, but my children grew up on it and now my grandchildren enjoy it just as much. I am delighted to pass on this recipe to you for your family to enjoy for years to come.

1 cup butter – softened 1 cup powdered sugar ½ cup brown sugar 1 egg 1 teaspoon vanilla 2 cups flour ½ teaspoon baking soda ½ teaspoon salt Combine all ingredients into dough and spread in a 9X13 pan. ¾ lb or ¾ cup of almond paste 3 eggs 1 cup sugar Combine and spread over the dough.

Dot filling with remaining dough and heat in over at 3250 for 45 minutes.

Cut while warm into squares. Yields 20 servings.

The Silver Academy’s annual school Science Fair was held on Wednesday, January 18 in the Henry Miller Auditorium. The budding scientists did an outstanding job in preparing and presenting their projects. They certainly “wowed” everyone with the topics they researched and the results from their experiments.

Congratulations go out to all the first and second place winners!

The first place winners were Chaim Bell, Or Klapper, Alana Reid, and Samuel Shvartsman. The second place winners were Anthoni Berg and Manya Tsimmerman.

Chaim’s project was “Does the melting point of the wax used in a candle influence the candle’s burn rate and light output?”

Or’s project asked “Does the type of chocolate affect the melting time?”

Alana wondered “How does changing the type of sugar in a sugar and saltpeter rocket fuel recipe affect its burn rate?”

Samuel tested “How will the shape and size affect the falling times of parachutes?”

Anthoni’s project was “Will temperature affect how long luminol glows?”

Lastly, Manya questioned “How does the amount of water in gelatin affect its flexibility?”

We commend all the students for their excellent work! The students awarded a first place will go on to compete at the Capital Area Science and Engineering Fair in March.

We will have a special dedication ceremony on Sunday, May 21 beginning at 11:00am to celebrate the completion of the community funded renovation of its front steps and step facade wall. A photographer will be on hand for pictures and the community is invited to join us. Immediately after the dedication ceremony, our shul will have its annual picnic at nearby Hoffer Park, which will include a meeting of our board.

Life Cycle OBITUARIES Roberta Joan Berdofe Roberta Joan Berdofe, 86, of Harrisburg, passed away on February 1.

Born in Pittsburgh on May 20, 1930 she was the daughter of the late Jack and Flora Reiss.

Roberta loved music, art and reading, and her faithful kitty, Alfie. She was a graduate of Penn State receiving her bachelor’s degree, later becoming a much-loved teacher at Susquehanna Twp. Schools for 25 years. A dedicated believer in the value of education, she was a member of the AAUW (American Association of University Women), Penn State Alumni Association and the League of Women Voters.

Continuing the legacy of her parents, she was active in the Jewish Community Center Senior Club, volunteered for Meals on Wheels and for the Jewish Home of Greater Harrisburg.

She is predeceased by her husband Frank, sister Barbara Kraus (Manny Kraus). Survived by her daughters Stephanie BerdofeValcazar (Julio) of Spain, Melanie Berdofe (Jim Kelly) of Oakland, CA, Beth Ann Berdofe White of Bethlehem, PA, grandchildren Daniel Valcazar, Gabriel Valcazar, nephew Lee Kraus (Carol), and niece Sue Savage, as well as several beloved cousins and many good friends.

Her memorial service was held February 10 at the Hetrick-Bitner Funeral Home with Rabbi Peter Kessler officiating.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Hospice of Central PA or to The Humane Society of the United States.

Carole Chalick Carole Chalick, 78, of Harrisburg, passed away on February 11.

She was born march 14, 1938, in Philadelphia, daughter of the late Max and Lillian (Silverman) Chalick.

She is survived by her loving companion of 43 years, Jerome “Jerry” Stouffer, his son Barry Stouffer and granddaughters Kayla and Brooke. She was predeceased by her cat Buffy, who she spoiled shamelessly.

A graduate of Penn State and Case Western universities, Carole had a masters in social work, and worked for the PA Department of Public Welfare until her retirement in 2002. She enjoyed volunteering at the Jewish Home of Harrisburg, was a member of the Lower Paxton Community Center, and gave her time reading to children at the local library.

Known fondly as “Kaylah” by her dear Jerome, Carole enjoyed traveling by his side, loved board games like scrabble, was in a book club and was a member of a ladies dinner group laughingly named J.U.G.S. (Just Us Girls).

As per her wishes, burial was private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or American Cancer Society.

Robert Kranich Robert Kranich, 91, of Harrisburg, passed away on February 13.

Bob was born in Altoona, PA on May 3, 1925 to the late Max and Anna Kranich. He was a lifetime member of Beth El Temple and a Real Estate Broker for over 50 years. A graduate of William Penn High School and Penn State University, he went on to complete his MBA at Columbia University. He was a member of Beta Sigma Rho fraternity. He served in the US Navy during World War II. Robert is survived by his wife of 65 years Ann Kranich; sister JoAnne Lyons; daughters Betsy (Jim) Lehrman and Nancy McElroy; son Laurence (Valerie Strauss) Kranich; and grandchildren Jessica,

Cassidy, Kevin, Anna, Ethan and Emma.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, February 16 at the Beth El Cemetery Chapel with Rabbis Eric Cytryn and Peter Kessler officiating.

Burial in the Beth El Cemetery followed.

Memorial contributions can be made to Beth El Temple, the Hospice of Central Pennsylvania or to the charity of your choice.

DEBORAH LYNN SHERMAN Deborah Lynn Sherman, 58, passed away on February 11, 2017.

Deborah was born on January 7, 1959 in Washington, D.C. to Robert McKean and Barbara Ruth (Ferns) Beauregard.

She is survived by her husband, David Sherman, her mother, Barbara Ruth Beauregard, her sister, Sharon Thompson, and her brother-inlaw, Barry Sherman.

Her funeral service was held on February 13 at Kesher Israel Cemetery Chapel. Burial in the Kesher Israel Cemetery followed.

Ruth Lillian Stein Ruth Lillian Stein, 87, passed away on Friday, February 10, 2017.

Ruth was born on December 5, 1929 in New Brunswick, NJ to the late Hyman and Clara (Bogen) Dechowitz.

She received her Bachelor’s degree from Trenton State Teacher’s College and went on to complete her Master’s in Education from Penn State University. In 1952, she married Dr. Samuel Stein, moved to Harrisburg, and joined Kesher Israel congregation. She felt strongly about community and family and was a natural leader displaying passionate strength and fortitude. Ruth was a loving mother, grandmother, aunt, friend, and Cub Scout leader.

She is survived by her son, Corey Stein, her daughters, Carin Stein, Diann Stein and Debby Stein, and her grandchildren, Adam Stein, Tyler Stein, Hillary Stein, Jesse Eisenstein and Lena Eisenstein.

Her funeral service was held at at the Kesher Israel Cemetery Chapel in Harrisburg on February 14. Burial in the Kesher Israel Cemetery followed.

In lieu of floral contributions, donations may be made in Ruth’s name to the Jewish Federation of Harrisburg, the Jewish Community Center Senior Club or the Kesher Israel Synagogue.

Judith Waxman Judith Waxman, 91, of Harrisburg, formerly of Delray Beach, Fl., passed away on February 6, 2017.

She was born December 22, 1925 in Richmond, VA. She was the daughter of the late Theodore and Anna Lapkin; and was preceded in death by her brother, David Lapkin.

Surviving are her sons, Marc Waxman (Barbara), of Dauphin and James Waxman, of Lakeland, FL; two granddaughters, Kelly Buffington (Tim) and Stacy Stence (Monte); 8 great-grandchildren; 9 great-greatgrandchildren; and sister-in-law, Amalia Lapkin, of Tel Aviv, Israel.

Judith retired from the Washington Federal Savings and Loan, Miami Beach, FL; graduated from William Penn High School, Class of 1944 and attended Penn State University. She was an avid bridge player and loved to read.

Judith requested no services. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Jewish Home of Greater Harrisburg.

Susan Menaker Whitehead Susan Menaker Whitehead, 66, formerly of Mancos, Colorado passed away on February 7, 2017.

Susan is survived by her husband Ev Whitehead; son Conner and wife; daughter Rebecca and husband; two grandchildren; sister Carol Menaker (Jerry Thomas) of Nevada City, CA; brother-in-law Charles Steinberg of Philadelphia and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents Miriam and Mort Menaker and her sister Barbara Steinberg.

A celebration of her life will be held in Colorado sometime in May. There will be no service in Harrisburg.
