john butler trio BEN CAMERON has a look at the new trio....

Photo. Tobin Voggesser

INSPIRATION can be found in the most innocuous places. For internationally-acclaimed blues and roots musician, John Butler, it came via a television show on SBS a few years ago. Hoping to trace the existence of poets, musicians and revolutionaries of his past, he peered through the branches of the Butler family tree on the popular program, Who Do You Think You Are. He found not only spiritual awakening, but the creative spark which helped spawn his fifth album, April Uprising. “It (the show) had a huge impact on me,” he said. “We’ve all heard the saying ‘if you don’t know where you’re

country. And after ticking a multitude of big gig boxes, including Glastonbury, Coachella, Lollapalooza, Fuji Rock Festival, he’s bringing his new look Trio to the the Schweppes Centre. The new three-piece consists of Butler, his brother in law and drummer, Nicky Bomba and recent acquisition, Sydney bassist Byron Luiters, who sealed his spot in the band after an impressive jam in Butler’s Fremantle studio, The Compound, in February last year. “Byron stood out among a great group of bassists and really ‘gelled’ with and added to what Nicky and I were creating,” Butler said. “I was just being guided by my gut and looking for an “x factor” but not the TV version.” I’ve always followed my heart when The album, with some tunes influenced by Butler’s heroes in Hendrix and Lenny Kravitz, has creating my band and music and been success both here and overseas; even going if I didn’t keep doing that I wouldn’t to number 27 in France. “It’s a bit more edgy, with a more natural be serving “the art”. fluid feel,” he said. “I definitely wanted to create a more aggresfrom, you don’t know where you’re going’ and for me it just gave a sive and focused sound.” Not surprisingly, his national tour has been an enormous great perspective of what has come before me. “It reaffirmed my beliefs and convictions, that now, I see hit so far– every Trio tour for the past seven years has sold out. But for the man with a passion for stencilling and skateboarding, aren’t completely all my own, but have been passed down to me. “In short it gave me a more powerful sense of who I am to- the sound of the band has progressed since their last album, day.” The California-born Butler, with almost one million albums 2007’s “Grand National”. Butler said the title, April Uprising, is sold in Australia, is the most successful independent artist in the a metaphor for transformation. “April was the month when this

huge period of change in my life manifested in the foundations of this album,” he said. “I learnt (through the SBS show) about my great grandfather taking part in the actual 1875 uprising in Koprivstitsa, Bulgaria and a lot of the revolutionary sentiment of the album, both musically and lyrically made the title an obvious choice.” He was also born in April, in 1975. For Butler, it’s his finest work to date. “We went into the laboratory to produce the best thing we could,” he said. “I feel we’ve created something very special that will stand the test of time.” But he’s far from complacent. “With the eyes of our fans around the world watching, there is by no means any complacency but the chemistry is so there,” he said. “The best way to convey it is that I’ve been going through a bit of a personal, spiritual, and musical revolution of late.” All in all, a new album, and a new lineup, has symbolised his enduring passion to follow his heart. “I’ve always followed my heart when creating my band and music and if I didn’t keep doing that I wouldn’t be serving “the art,” he said. “I have had a realisation of late; the artist serves the art, not the other way around. And good stories help.“If you don’t have a good story whether lyrically based or even instrumentally, you don’t got nothing,” he said.

Ned Kelly and the Green Sash NED KELLY and the Green Sash gently preludes the adult life of its titled bushranger, Ned Kelly. A unique and uplifting portrait, it shows the iconic man as a child – when he selflessly saved the life of another. As readers embrace the humanity of a lead character, they also learn of the depth to which Kelly viewed the event and its reward – a treasured green silken sash . . . the same one that would adorn his chest, as murderer and outlaw. With introspection and fine pictorials, the text brings readers a soul that does not deny its adult wrong doing, but speaks of the array of colours, and

IT is a wonderful character-based movie directed by Richard Linklater and stars Christian McKay as the actor’s actor Orson Welles. While nailing this role, McKay is ably supported by Zac Efron in his debut move away from heartthrob assignments. He plays an aspiring 17-yearold actor Richard Samuels. The three characters take the audience through a pivotal period in Welles’ life as he prepares for his first Shakespearean production at New York’s Mercury Theatre. The film dramatically shows Welles’ famous dictatorial traits as an egotistical perfectionist as he moulds the cast and crew into his vision of a modern interpretation of the Shakespeare classic. The screen representation of Welles’ opening night performance together with his ensemble cast is an

emotion, that can permeate a life-time. In Kelly’s own words: “I do not pretend that I have led a blameless life, or that one fault justified another, but the public judging a case like mine, should remember that the darkest life may have a bright side . . .” While themes of dualism appear throughout the work, they do not overpower the affect of one human life to sustain (or hurt) another. The Green Sash is a fine piece of literature – it will find favour with a broad readership, especially those who seek brightness from within.

outstanding cinematic achievement. Set among the suspense of Welles’ journey is a torrid love story between Zefron and Danes’ characters. Zefron’s performance is impressive and a marvellous vehicle to show he is able to produce entertaining and challenging work outside the comforts of Disney minders. This is even more impressive considering he is able to match the powerful performance of McKay’s Welles. By its very nature, Welles has to be played big and McKay delivers while leaving enough room for Zefron’s role to contribute. It is ambitious casting by Lucy Bevan and it works. Without fanfare and intricate special effects, Me and Orson Wells is cinema done the old fashioned way. Its only concession to today’s technology is that it is digitally shot.

SCIENCE and food technology have taken away all the foods we’ve eaten for thousands of years and replaced them with new food. This has been a disaster for our health and obesity levels. The answer is to go back to basics; back to the foods we ate before science and technology changed the way we think and eat. Don’t be a statistic. Don’t do what the rest of the population is doing; do something different. Stay away from technology foods and go back to naturebased foods. The more processing a food has gone through, the less nutritious it is. In some cases there is no nutrition left and our body doesn’t even know what to do with it. Here’s a great rule of thumb: eat food as close to its original source as possible, and if you don’t know its origin, don’t

eat it! Ask yourself: would my grandmother recognise this as food? Extract from Cyndi O’Meara’s latest book Healthy Habits Healthy Life; Creating a Life of Health and Vitality one habit at a time. For more information go to www.changinghabits.com.au

Was riding out at Crusoe Reservoir (great by the way) on Father’s Day and it was 2.30pm before we knew it, nowhere organised or booked for lunch.. typically. Starting to panic, but all was fixed as I remembered the delicious falafel kebab that is made out at Big Mama’s Kebabs in Centro Lansell. Not the typical place to have a Father’s Day lunch I agree, however, really, really good falafels. Give them a try.

I WILL be upfront with you. I am no foodie. I wouldn’t know my artichoke from my Elbo cheese. I recently holidayed in one of Victoria’s main foodie areas, but managed to pretty much escape anything that bordered on gastronomical pretentiousness. That was until, in desperation, and with hungry children in tow, I stopped at Wallington’s Elk Horn Roadhouse Cafe. There, despite it being a roadhouse, in a tin shed surrounded by a farm, we came across a foodies’ paradise. I am talking sourdough bread by the wheatload, freerange eggs that were probably from the chickens next door, Istra bacon, local goat’s cheese, cranberry stuff and more chutney than you could poke a pickled onion at. Most of the produce seemed to be local, which was obviously refreshing and informative, but I needed something both I and the kids could eat. I managed to find an egg-and bacon sandwich or two, and a pizza that, with a few ingredients removed was suitable. But it was tough. Even the Coke, which, ashamedly, my children often lap up, was not real Coke. It was some sort of organic, sugar-free bean import from New Zealand, but got over the line taste-wise. As I cast my eye around I no-

ticed the usual-style of people who eat at such establishments, the odd scarf, a hat or two, plenty of glasses of red wine and the some books. I listened closely to this foreign beast to hear what they were saying. Sure, there are plenty of such foodies in Bendigo, but I had a bit of time, it was quiet and the kids were playing with the goats. I put myself in their place as I closed my eyes and bit into the next thingy on the table. Don’t know what it was, but it probably had capsicum in it. I realised it wasn’t just about the food, which they seemed to lap up in spoonfuls, without pausing to double check they were eating something from the menu and not the table decoration. It did taste nice. Not quite as good as a steak from The Boundary, but the actual flavours in it were quite striking. Sure, these people loved the food, but they loved th experience, they loved the sunshine and, hey, they may have even loved the pretentiousness. So I am on a mission. I want to know why you love to eat where you eat. It may have nothing to do with the food, or it may have everything to do with it. Do love the Tyson Reef Hotel because of the steaks, The Match because of the diversity and the location, the Winebank because of, well, the bank of wine, or the Botanical Hotel because of the playground? It may be a combination of more than one reason. Having eaten at all of the above locations, I can say the food is great, but it is only one reason why I go there. Email us at bentertained@ bendiogoweekly.com.au and tell us why you eat where you eat. We will publish as many of the responses as we can, to give those looking for a place to dine out as much information aspossible.

miss country girl THERE could only be one, and what a number she was. Fourteen-year-old Karlee O’Donnell of Castlemaine had just the right amount of country sass and style to be crowned the first ever Miss Country Girl Bendigo. She had her friends to thank, who talked the statuesque Catholic College student into entering the catwalking competition. “I loved every minute of it,” she said. “I made some great friends and it has given me so much confidence.” The Year 8 student has hopes of breaking into the fashion industry, and counted Miranda Kerr and Jennifer Hawkins as fashion influences. “I wouldn’t mind meeting another cute English actor like Orlando Bloom either,” she joked. Karlee triumphed in a competition guest judge and Bendigo Weekly scribe Steve Kendall described as “fierce”. I’ve made some great “All the girls should be proud of their efforts,” friends and it’s given me he said. so much confidence. “It was very difficult to pick a winner.” Standing on the sidelines was Karlee’s mother who was the proudest parent in Bendigo. “She did it all on her own,” she said. “Although she wouldn’t have done it without her friend’s encouragement. “This competition has given her so much confidence and self belief, it’s been wonderful.” Coming in a close second was 16-year-old Jayeden Quin before 18-year-old Amy Van Heumen. Both girls can send in wildcard entries for the national final in Sydney.
