CABRINI CONNECTION I N S P I R I N G C R E AT I V I T Y

The Cabrini Connection is a mixed use development located in the center of Chicago’s former Cabrini-Green public housing projects. The City of Chicago is currently redeveloping or selling off the many vacant blocks of land once home to this notorious housing project with hopes of creating a new mixed income neighborhood. The Cabrini Connection is primarily focused on children’s creative development for a new community seeking to break from the minimum standards. The organization is designed to act as a supplementary institute to work with schools, families, and the community to encourage creative and intellectual development allowing students to evolve beyond existing social standards.

NYC TRASH EXCHANGE After the closing of Staten Island’s Fresh Kills landfill in 2001, the New York City Department of Sanitation has spent nearly one billion dollars every year on high transportation costs and out of state disposal fees to New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and South Carolina. The New York City Trash Exchange is a skyscraper for vertical waste management located at the Hudson River Rail Yards, the former site for freight transfer from train to ships. The City of New York reinstates the yards to collect, process, and distribute for recycling 36,200 tons of garbage produced everyday. Vacuum shafts through existing underground infrastructure will collect trash, eliminating on-street garbage trucks. Barges will transport plastic, metal, glass, and paper recycle-ready from the New York City Trash Exchange to recycling plants along the Hudson River. The Hudson River Rail Yard is surrounded by the northern terminus of High Line Park and is also on axis with Madison Square Garden, Penn Station, and the Empire State Building. Above the rail yard, a botanical garden connected to the High Line will be a gathering space where New Yorkers and tourists view the spectacle of fluctuation between object and anti-object conditions in the tower and below this platform via reconstituted rails. Visible metabolism of waste within a skyscraper contests the traditional use of the skyscraper as object.

7 Steam Turbine

Steam is passed through a turbine to generate electricity + water

5 Heat Exchange

Gas fuel heat is passed through a heat exchanger to produce steam

4 Gasification 3 Tower 2 Sorted 1 In

Excess gas from the gas cleanup feeds steam to the steam turbine.

6 Gas Cleanup

Excess gas from the heat exchange is cleaned to produce HCL and sulfur

Trash is reduced to basic materials after passing through a plasma arc

Waste is transferred to the tower for storage and compaction

Recycling is then sorted out of the trash and returned back to the city for resale

City trash comes to the facility through infrastructure embedded in existing subway routes

EARTH LOG H OME H AI TI 2 01 0 In July of 2010, a group of twelve nurses and architects traveled to Petit-Goave, Haiti roughly 60 miles west of Port-au-Prince. The objective was to provide medical relief to the village and build a house for a local family while training locals in building construction methods. With shipments into the country at a stand-still and limited local resources, the group had to travel with the majority of their supplies. By utilizing sandbags and sand-logs as the structure of the home, the group was able to fly with nearly all building supplies as carry-ons. The walls were then constructed by using crushed rubble from the earthquake mixed with sand and held together with barbed wire and thin metal rods.
