Down The Trail From Dogpound By JB Over the past couple of years we have had a chance to visit the Catalina State Park on a couple of occasions. The first time we were meeting a bunch of folks from the Arizona Back Country Riders (http:// The first ride that weekend was a trip up through the boulders to Cherry Springs. The variety of terrain and differences in vegetation never fail to amaze me but we are getting used to the many facets of Arizona trails. There is such a huge variety of terrain in this state and each one has its own special beauty. We found this fellow out for a hike along the trail also.

Just recently we visited the park again and this time we stayed right in the Equestrian area and availed ourselves of their very nice pipe corrals and adjacent water hydrants. We rode, for the most part, right in the park this time and did parts of the Sutherland and 50 Year Trails as well as a small loop right out of camp called the Bridle Trail and Canyon Loop. The trails were in excellent shape and are well marked and although we did encounter both hikers and mountain biking folks, they were all more than courteous and most were excited to be sharing the trails with our horses.

Words From A Master Horseman

On our explorations of Arizona’s back country, we have often stumbled on Crested Saguaro cacti but this was my first encounter with what appear to be a Crested Barrel Cactus. This particular ride was in March and as the seasons move closer to summer we are seeing more and more critters out and about, but as yet, no snakes have crossed our trails.

“With the horse I always consider that if I do too much in too little time and I’m not patient, he’s gonna shut down and I won’t get anything done.”- Buck Brannaman

Future Stars of the Arizona Saddle Club

Day 2: we headed down the wash through the Catalina Regional Park headed towards the State Park. We wound our way down the wash in and out of both parks and past some private land along the way, and then headed up the hill and onto the aptly named Fifty Year Trail to head back towards our camp. Not too shabby a view from our site there either.

If you and your horses happen to be in the Tucson area, a visit to this jewel of a park would be a shame to miss out on. It is right on the north side of Tucson, adjacent to the Santa Catalina Mountains, and offers great camping as well as some pretty nice scenery to enjoy. Young horsemen and horsewomen from left to right: Gavin Baldwin, Chance Patterson, Kailie Kilpatrick, Shayla Puschner The Arizona Saddle Club is a non-profit family oriented riding group that holds monthly gymkhanas, as well as, one statewide show every year and rides in parades. Club members also participate in other statewide shows. Originally founded in 1975 with only 8 members, the ASC has grown to well over 80 members in 2013. ASC has a benefit event at every show and the proceeds go to a charity that is chosen and voted on by the club.

Food For Thought By Rocco Wachman

A Senior Instructor at the World Famous Arizona Cowboy College, Rocco is the Star of Six Seasons of Country Music Television’s Original Series Cowboy U and a Regular on one of the highest rated TV Shows in America, The Dr. Oz Show. He has been a Ranch Cowboy and Horse Trainer for twenty five years that has been featured on the Today Show, Good Morning America, CBS Sunday Morning, The Travel Channel, Discovery Network and other TV Shows to numerous to mention. Also he Authored a Book called: “Cowboy” The Ultimate Guide to Living Like a Great American Icon published by Harper Collins in 2010 about his take on the History of the American Cowboy. He is considered the single most recognized Western Figure in the World today and lives in a very remote location with his four dogs Bryn, Diesel, Hondo and Elvis. Someone asked me a few weeks ago why I signed up to do an Appearance at the SVS Horse Sale and Show at Westworld in Scottsdale this November. This person said you don’t ride Jumping or Dressage Horses, I have never seen you in English Attire. What’s the deal? Her statement about my involvement with English Horses was actually an incorrect statement. Thinking back in my career I have started as many Three Day Event Horse as I have Western Mounts. I told her I try to go and support every Horse Event I can get to no matter what the discipline is. As a Rider and Professional Horseman my involvement in many areas of my industry is important and try to catch every Show I can. I will try to explain why I do this and why I think it is important every horse owner to do the same. I really enjoy watching a great horse do great things at extraordinary levels. Don’t care really what it’s doing or what breed of horse it is. I love to witness amazing things. Most of the people I talk to have interests that are breed and discipline specific. They only ride Trail, or only show Western Pleasure, compete in Flat Class English Shows specifically, etc. Well I have always contended that great riders transcend all types of riding and really great horses do lots of different things………… But this is not the point of my
