Congratulations to all of the winners at the BCA SW Regional Championship. We will have complete results and photos from the event next month. I would like to welcome Skip & Jan’s back to the Billiard & Dart News family. The Arizona Pool community lost Dick Breeze in August. Dick had been a long time member of the local pool community and had suffered from poor health for quite some time. Lots of interesting tournaments coming up on the horizon. Some rooms are really going over the top with added money to entice the local players to get out and play. Please show your appreciation to these rooms by getting out and participating in their events. And remember, they don’t just hold tourneys to give away money. The players have to spend a little moneh in the room to help them cover the cost of these tournaments. Until next time...

Arizona Billiard & Dart News Stingers Sports Bar was the place to be on the weekend of August 10th and 11th as Sophia Morquecho held three different tournaments to draw nearly 75 players. Saturday saw a $500 added 5’s & 6’s event, as well as a $500 added 7’s & 8’s event. The 5’s and 6’s event saw a full field of 32 of the top 6 & under rated players in the valley. The final four players on the winners side went to battle with Daniel Jaworowski defeating Leandrea Gaff and Joe Nicita beating recent AWBT winner Jaye Succo. In the match for the hot-seat, Jaworowski showed why he is one of the toughest 6’s out there with a 5-2 win over Nicita. After their winners side losses, Gaff and Succo won their next matches to force a match between the two last ladies standing in the event. This match would go to Leandrea 4-3, sending Jaye home in 4th place. Leandrea would then drop a 4-3 decision to Joe Nicita and settle for third place. The double elimination finals saw Nicita beat Jaworowski the first set 5-3 and both players agree to a split after that. The 7’s and 8’s event was almost full with a field of 28 of the top bar table players in the valley. The hot-seat for this one was won by Jerry Stuckart with a 5-3 win over Troy Ridder.

Splits Highlight Stinger’s Big Weekend ing being able to concentrate on playing in an event at Stingers and not having to worry about being the tournament director. Brewer had remained unbeaten into the final four on the winners side, only to drop a match to Stuckart. Brewer had made his way through the one loss side to earn a match with Ridder, but would drop that match 4-1 to set up a rematch between Stuckart and Ridder in the finals.

Just like the 5’s & 6’s event, the player coming from the one loss side (Ridder) won the first match of the finals (5-2) and both players agreed on a split after that.

Troy Ridder & Jerry Stuckart

As if the two events on Saturday and Sunday weren’t enough, Stinger’s also threw a $200 added “Second Chance” event on Sunday that drew 14 players. This event was won by Robin Clark who defeated Burt Balancad for the hot-seat and again in the second set of the double elimination finals. Sandoval Undefeated At Knobbys

Mike Sandoval & Ed Scott

Mike Sandoval put together an undefeated run through the field of twenty three players to win the Knobby’s 9’s and Under 8-Ball event on August 2nd. Sandoval took the hot-seat with a 2-1 win over Burt Balancad, when Burt missed an 8-ball at hill-hill. The left side of the board saw a match between two players with five match winnings streaks. Ed Scott had lost to Bruce Hirose, and JR Burkhart had lost to Sandoval early in the event. Ed would be the player to continue his winning streak, sending Burkhart to the rail in 4th place. Ed would go on to defeat Balancad and earn his shot against Sandoval in the finals, but it wasn’t meant to be as Mike took the final match 2-1 for first place. The Desert Classic Tour returned to Skip & Jan’s Sports Bar in Tempe for the 5th stop on the 2013 schedule with a field of 32 players fighting it out on the 7’ Diamond Tables. With the best players in the Valley in attendance, it was a slight surprise to see two players ranked outside of the top ten facing off for the hot-seat. #11 ranked Paul Grande started Sunday play with an 8-4 win over #3 ranked Rick Armbrust. Meanwhile, Pete Lhotka (ranked outside of the top 20) beat #1 ranked Mitch Ellerman 8-9 on Sunday morning. That left Lhotka and Grande playing for the hot-seat. The hot-seat match would be a close one, with Grande coming out as the 8-7 winner. While the left side of the board looked tough, a handful of the top players on tour didn’t even make it to Sunday play. Dennis Orender (ranked #2), Nick DeLeon (#4) and Bobby Emmons (#7) all suffered “three and out” performances on Saturday and were eliminated out of the money. While Susan Williams didn’t make Sunday play, she scored her usual upsets over top players with wins over Ray Robles and Dennis Orender on Saturday. Sunday play on the one loss side was all about “The Freezer”, Scott Frost. After a first round loss to Mike Sandoval on Saturday, Frost had won four matches on the left side of the board to earn his place in Sunday’s matches. Frost kept things going with a 10-1 win over Tucson’s George Teyechea first thing Sunday morning. Meanwhile, Sandoval scored an 8-6 win over Rick Galloway.

Grande Wins Desert Classic Tour Stop The next round of play saw Frost scoring a 10-5 win over Ellerman and Armbrust eliminating Sandoval 7-5.

The match for fourth place saw Rick Armbrust hold a 3-2 lead over Scott Frost before Frost won eight straight games for a 10-3 win. Frost wasn’t done though, as he went on to win the first nine games against Pete Lhotka in the next match for an amazing run of seventeen games in a row. Lhotka would get on the scoreboard at 9-1, but Frost then closed the match out at 10-1.

Paul Grande and Scott Frost

The first set of the double elimination finals saw Frost race out to a 4-0 lead and then basically trade racks with Grande for a 10-6 win. The second set of the finals looked to be going in the same direction for The Freezer as he quickly took a 4-1 lead. That was when Grande took control of the match. He won two games to get back within one rack at 4-3. Frost won another rack and Grande took the next two to tie things at 5-5. Grande then got to the hill at 7-5, leaving Frost needing to win five straight games for the victory. Frost would give it his all and win two in a row before Grande closed out the match with an 8-7 victory.

Complete Payouts: 1st Paul Grande 2nd Scott Frost 3rd Pete Lhotka 4th Rick Armbrust 5th Mitch Ellerman 5th Mike Sandoval 7th George Teyechea 7th Rick Galloway

The Desert Classic Tour will be playing 14.1 at Pockets in Tucson on September 21st and 22nd for the next stop.

DCT Finale heads to Skip & Jan’s in December

Eric Young Wins At Stingers

Tour Director Dennis Orender has announced that the Desert Classic Tour’s 2013 Season Finale will take place at Skip & Jan’s Sports Bar in Tempe on December 6th - 8th.

Eric Young won two out of three matches against Steve Blackburn to take down the Stinger’s 9 & under 9-ball event on August 16th.

The event will be 10-Ball on the 7’ Diamond Tables and will feature over $2,000 in added money. “Natalie has been a supporter of the DCT for the past 2 years, as well as a big supporter of the billiards community for many years.  We are excited to be bringing our season finale to Skip and Jan’s this year” Orender commented.

With $300 in added prize money for a Friday night Eric Young tournament, the 32 player field in this event was full with a waiting list days before the event.

Skip & Jan’s Owner, Natalie Poyner, commented “We are always thrilled to help support the DCT and we are so excited to have them back for  the finale in December”.

Young and Blackburn’s first match would be for the hot-seat, and that match would be won by Blackburn 6-5. On the one loss side, Bernie Store was mowing down opponents just as quick as the tournament director, Jimmy Brewer, could send them her way. After a second round loss to Brian Reich, Bernie eliminated such notables as Ben Sutherland, Doc Rice, Tres Kane and Robert Barry. Eric would bring an end to Bernie’s streak though, with a 7-4 scoreline. The first match of the finals went to Young in a quick 7-2 decision, but the second set would go to hill-hill before Young eliminated Blackburn 7-5 for first place. Complete Payouts: 1st Eric Young 2nd Steve Blackburn 3rd Bernie Store 4th Robert Barry 5th Brian Reich 5th Tres Kane 7th George Rowe 7th Doc Rice

Ellerman Rolls at Bullshooters

Paul Feltman Sr. & Mitch Ellerman

The Ellerman Express got off to a slow start, but still came through with the win at Bullshooters’ August One Pocket Madness Event on August 10th. Mitch Ellerman found himself on the wrong side of the board after just one match at this event, after taking a first round loss to Rod Elliott. Elliott would stay on the right side of the board until the hot-seat match, where he dropped a 2-1 decision to Paul Feltman Sr. On the one loss side, Ellerman was waiting for Elliott and sent Rod home in third place with a 2-1 scoreline. During Ellerman’s five match winning streak on the left hand side of the board, Paul Feltman Jr was one of the players he eliminated. Ellerman finished off the Feltman family in the finals with a 3-0 win over Paul Feltman Sr. Final Payouts: 1st Mitch Ellerman 2nd Paul Feltman Sr. 3rd Rod Elliott 4th Paul Feltman Jr.

Timber Wins At Metro

Crash Reddin & Jaz

Crash Reddin spotted Jeremy Nelson the hot-seat and still came back to beat Nelson two and out three matches to capture Metro Sportz Bar’s 9 & under event on August 3rd.

Jason Odle and Timber

Reddin and Nelson were the final two undefeated players on the winners side in this field of eighteen players. Nelson would come out on top of the hot-seat match 6-4, sending Reddin to the wrong side of the board. On the one loss side, Todd Dilley was continuing his recent streak of strong play. After a first round loss to Reddin, Dilley had won five straight matches including a 5-1 win over Jack Scerca. Dilley’s run would end when a missed 8-ball at hill-hill gave Reddin all the opportunity he needed to take the match. The first set of the double elimination finals was all Crash, as he took control of a 1-1 match and won five straight for the 6-1 win. The second set saw Reddin take an early 2-0 lead, but Nelson came back to tie things at 4-4. Reddin won the next two games for the 6-4 win and first place. Complete Payouts: 1st Crash Reddin 2nd Jeremy Nelson 3rd Todd Dilley 4th Jack Scerca

$754 $268 $90 $120 (with side pots)

Timber scored an undefeated run through the field of fifteen players to win Metro Sportz Bar’s 7’s & Under 9-Ball event on August 3rd. Timber took the hot-seat with a win over BBQ and got ready for the wait for the final match. BBQ would drop his next match to a red-hot Jason Odle. Odle had lost his first match of the tournament, but won five straight to earn a shot against Timber in the finals. The final match stayed close the whole way, but it was Timber snapping the 9-ball on the hill for the 5-3 win and first place. Complete Payouts: 1st Timber 2nd Jason Odle 3rd BBQ

Evil Ways Celebrates AZPL State Championship Win

The Summer 2013 AZPL State Championships were recently held at Stinger’s Sports Bar & Grill the weekend of August 23rd-25th. Congratulations to Pete Williams, Harold Lyons & Laura Boothroyd of Evil Ways! They didn’t lose a match as they won 5 straight matches to win the trophies and $1500 in cash to become the Summer State Champions!

Finishing in 2nd place in their division they led off in the #7 spot and got a 72-46 win over Beach Patrol that finished in 7 games. Next up was the team that took first place over them, Dazed & Confused. Curtis Neal & Joe Granillo got a quick pair of wins before taking a 23-20 lead after the first round. Pete started the 2nd round with a win to give Evil Ways their first lead of the match. Dawn Atokuku defeated Laura in a battle of MVPs 10-6 to give the Dazed the lead but it wouldn’t hold as Harold defeated Curtis 10-1 to take a 6-point lead. Dazed pulled within 2 points but wouldn’t get closer as Evil Ways would eventually win 69-65. Up next was the No 1 team in the league, Doc’s Gang. They shut Doc’s Gang down, taking a 5023 lead after 5 games. Doc Rogers snapped the streak with a 10-6 win over Pete but that would be it as Laura beat Doug Molhook 10-5 to take a 28-point lead after 7 games to finish the match and end their night at 3-0. They would return on Sunday at 2pm well rested but it wouldn’t get any easier as next up would be first place in the East Valley, Team Ram Rod! Pete & Harold won the first two before Team Ram Rod won the next 3 in a row to hold the lead through 6 games but by the 7th game Evil Ways took back the lead and won the match 65-60! They now awaited the winner from the loser’s side which would be Team Ram Rod, who just defeated Doc’s Gang 73-69 in a 9-game nailbiter! In the first game Team Ram Rod’s Brady Wil-

liams started off by running out on Pete but it was all Evil Ways the rest of the way as they won the next 6 games in a row to win 60-38 in 7 games and become AZPL State Champions!

The weekend started off on Friday night at Stinger’s Sports Bar & Grill with three separate events - a 32 player singles tournament, a 22-team scotch-doubles tournament and the 8-Ball Break & Run Derby with 30 players. There were so many people some events ran to Saturday! In the scotch doubles tournament Robert & Laura finished undefeated but couldn’t return Saturday and finished with $115. Paul & Brady of Team Ram Rod took 1st, winning $165 and Skip Bales & John Bettencourt finished tied for 3rd with Rob Turner & Dawn Atokuku with each team winning $115 & $100 respectively. In the singles tournament Harold Lyons went 5-0 defeating Ryan Levengood, John B, Derek Deffner, Robert Berry, Curtis Elifritz & Scott Gwilliam to win $200! 2nd Place went to Scott Gwilliam, who won $150. Curtis finished in 3rd and won $100. Dwayne Beagle took 4th and $50! In 8-Ball Break & Run Derby Harold held the lead at 27 after the first round. In the second round Robert Berry scored 45 consecutive points to set a new record and take a 58-point lead! In the 3rd round it was Curtis Elifritz who scored 29 to finish with 56 and Joe Granillo who scored 24 and finished with 60 to join Robert in the final round. Joe went on to score 17 to finish in 1st, winning $75 & a $50 dues credit. Robert finished in 2nd with 15, winning $50 and a $35 credit and Curtis took home $25 and a $15 credit. In the Wild Card Tournament it was Hit em Hard vs The Blurps. Curtis Neal led off with a 10-2 win for the Blurps before Hit em Hard won the next 5 games to take a 52-35 lead into the 7th game. They lost the next two but held on to the lead and won 73-60 to take the 32nd spot in the Championships!

Arizona Billiard & Dart News

8 teams started off the morning at 9am. Of those 8 Hit em Hard, Car Junkees Part Deux & a shorthanded Me & My Hose each won 2 matches. Scott Gwilliam won the tournament MVP, winning 14 games and scoring 169 points over 7 matches! Laura Boothroyd was the women’s tournament MVP, winning 8 games while scoring 115 for Evil Ways! John Ilk & Thoi Truong won a combined 17 games and won 2 matches without a 3rd player on their team! Last season’s Champion – The El Diablos – finished tied for 5th with a 5-2 record. They lost to Larry, Darryl & Darryl on the winner’s side and on the loser’s side, they lost to Doc’s Gang in a rematch from the Spring Championship. This time it would be Doc’s Gang advancing after winning 69-67! Out of 32 teams only 8 would make it to Sunday. Those teams would be Evil Ways & Team Ram Rod on the winner’s side and Doc’s Gang, The Gangster Grins, Larry, Darryl & Darryl, The El Diablos, Beach Patrol and Dazed & Confused on the loser’s side. They finished in that order, from 1st to 8th. During the Championships on Saturday the New Beginnings Paso Fino Horse Rescue hosted the raffle and raised over $800 for the ponies! Congratulations to them for all of their efforts! Thanks to Stinger’s Bar & Grill for being a wonderful host for our main event. The entire staff did a wonderful job! Thanks to Jennifer who once again went above and beyond. And thanks to everyone who came out! Without you none of this would be possible. The Fall season begins the week of September 9th. The APA National Team Championships were held during the week of August 15th through the 24th in Las Vegas at the Riviera Hotel and Casino. This year’s event featured over 700 eight ball teams, 350 nine ball teams, 62 Ladies teams, 244 masters’ teams and over 600 eight ball and nine ball doubles teams.

APA National Team Championships

The APA National Team Championships is the world’s largest pool tournament as touted in the Guinness Book of World Records. APA Phoenix Metro sent 3 eight ball teams, 2 nine ball teams, 1 ladies team, 2 masters’ team and 4 eight ball and 9 ball teams to compete this year. This was the first year that we were able to send an all ladies team. It was very exciting to see the girls do so well, placing 33rd at the event, Gina Nowlin, the APA League Operator here in Phoenix said. APA Phoenix Metro pays for all the 5 player teams to go to Vegas, including entry fees and rooms during their stay. We would like to congratulate all the players that participated in the event and all the players who just drove to Vegas to support their friends and play in the week long mini events. Jeanette Lee, Mike Massey and Tom Rossman, better known as Dr Cue were on hand for trick shooting and challenge matches.

For complete coverage of the National Team Championships you can visit the National APA website at www. poolplayers.com.

There was also lots of fun and dancing to a live DJ at the two Poolapalooza partys held at pool side. Tom Rossman performed and there were games and just a lot of good fun. Anyone interested in joining the APA is encouraged to call the local APA League Operators at 602-920-9192 or 602-920-9193 or visit our website at www.apaphx.com.

Scott Frost welcomed a handful of players to Kolby’s Corner Pocket on August 4th for four hours of One Pocket instruction. While the group of pupils was a small one, they went away happy. One student, Jodie Villegas, commented after the clinic, “The clinic was awesome! To learn secrets and techniques from the best one pocket in the world was truly an experience I will never forget. Scott is an excellent teacher and really fun to learn from! My friend Bobby Ast nailed it when he said ‘There will never be another one pocket player as good as Scott Frost on the entire planet... ever!!!’” Frost’s next One Pocket clinic will be on October 27th at Kolby’s Corner Pocket.

Long On Exercise By Roger Long

Certified Instructor Well, I think it’s time for me to get back in shape. I’ve slacked off of the exercise the past couple months while my knee healed and while I got a few cues built, but with those things taken care of, I now have no more reasons (excuses?) for not looking after my physical self, again. But where should I begin? I recently heard about a couple of DVD workout programs that several of my friends and acquaintances are using, so I decided to check them out. One is called P90X – which stands for Power 90 Extreme - and the other is called INSANITY. The P90X ads tell me I can have a body like Mr. Universe in 90 days, while INSANITY claims they can do the same thing in only 60 days. Considering that both programs sell for around the same base price ($120), the INSANITY program seemed to be the more interesting of the two since it

would get me in shape quicker. After all, speed is everything, right? However, upon further investigation, I had second thoughts. You see, both of these workout programs tell you the same thing. They tell you that there is a problem with “traditional interval training,” which they defined as “long periods of moderate exercise followed by short bursts of intense effort.” One states that the problem is that your body will “plateau” early, and no progress will be obtained after that. The other only implies that traditional training is for sissies, but they get their message across, anyway. Both program promoters promise to solve this “problem” by putting you on regimens that require long periods of intense exercise, with only short periods of rest. All that can sound pretty good… at least, on the surface, it might. One P90X user told me that the idea is to tear muscles down and then give them a little time to build back up before you go tearing them down again. Say, huh? Doesn’t it always take longer to build something back up than it did to tear it down? How can P90X

reverse that process, especially with something as complex as the human body? A little skepticism seemed in order at this point. Another friend of mine went through the entire INSANITY program. Now remember, this is the program that’s supposed to make you look like a Greek god in only 60 days. Well, the Day 60 photo that my friend posted on his Facebook page looked more like most people’s Day 1 photos that were on the INSANITY website. Perhaps my friend needed to learn more of INSANITY’s Photoshop skills before he started posting his “after” pictures? Maybe it’s just that skeptical nature of mine, but workout programs like Insanity and P90X really sound dangerous to me. Insanity’s website does give the usual “see a physician first” warning, but it’s in very small print and it’s way down at the bottom of the page, suggesting it’s really not that important for people to see. And P90X offers no warning at all, so I can only assume that they think extreme exercise is safe for anyone, at any age, and to go ahead and dive right in.

Mangahas Wins 480 9’s & Under

I want good health as much as anyone else on this earth. I know I’m never going to have a body like Adonis - no matter what type of workout program I use - so a healthy diet and lots of (moderate) exercise is all I need to help extend my life and make me physically and mentally sharper at anything I do. But I don’t have to do it all in just two or three months. Instead, I think it’s safer and wiser for a man of my age to take it a little -or maybe a lot slower. So to all of my friends who are on the INSANITY and P90X fast tracks; don’t wait for me at the finish line, I’ll be there in my own time. Now it’s time for a long, brisk walk. See ya later!

Amado & Francisco At 480

Donald Mangahas emerged from a small field of players to win Max & Ted’s 480’s August 9 & Under event on August 24th. Mangahas beat Corky Callahan for the hot-seat and got comfortable waiting for an opponent in the finals.

Not this old man.

Gilbert Ortiz, Francisco, Corky Callahan and Amada Martinez

Donald Mangahas, Corky Callahan and Robert Barry

That opponent would be Robert Barry, who had been sent to the one loss side earlier in the event by Mangahas. Barry’s second match against Mangahas would not go any better than the first one with Mangahas again scoring the victory and taking first place. The players also participated in a two “9 on the break” side pots with everyone pitching in $5 with the proceeds being paid to the first person to make a 9-ball on the break during the event. Corky Callahan and Kenny would win these side pots. Complete Payouts: 1st Donald Mangahas 2nd Robert Barry 3rd Corky Callahan

$135 $65 $40

Amado Martinez & his partner Francisco teamed up for a hard fought win at the Max & Ted’s 480 Scotch Doubles event on August 10th. It looked like smooth sailing for Francisco & Amado after a 7-4 win over Chris & Dwayne for the hot-seat. Chris and Dwayne went to the one loss side and lost a hill-hill nail biter to Gilbert Ortiz & Corky Callahan. Gilbert and Corky would continue their winning ways in the first set of the finals with a 7-6 win over Amado and Francisco. The second set would go Amado and Francisco’s way by a 7-4 scoreline. Complete Payouts: 1st Amado Martinez & Francisco 2nd Gilbert Ortiz & Corky Callahan 3rd Chris & Dwayne

Adams’ first win over Williams was a 7-4 match for the hot-seat, sending Williams to the one loss side to take on Kitty Carroll. September 2013

The once-underground sport of foosball is making a resurgence in central Arizona. Anyone who loves the game knows how hard it can be to find a good game or a tournament (outside of your single buddy’s rec room or garage!). But within the last year, area players and sponsors have come together to organize tournaments and leagues that are now running four days a week around the valley, and showing no signs of letting up. No matter where you happen to live, you can find some great action at one of these popular venues near you (many of which you are probably already familiar with if you are reading this newspaper!): Jester’s Billiards (Gilbert), Main St. Billiards (Mesa), Cactus Moon (Mesa), CK’s Tavern & Grill (Ahwatukee), The Loft Again (N. Phoenix), Dubliner Irish Pub (N. Phoenix), Bull Shooters (W. Phoenix), Stinger’s Sports Bar (W. Phoenix) Show up for a quick game at any of these locations, and just ask about tournaments and leagues. You can also pay a visit to Arizona’s foosball home-base on the internet, www.arizonafoosball.com, which contains up-to-date information on all local events, discussion forums, and a whole lot more. Or simply call 602-7518818 if you have questions. The month of August was a memorable one for Arizona Foosball, featuring two special major events showcasing both leagues and tournaments.

Foosball Making Big Noise in Arizona

Arizona Billiard & Dart News

Foos Bowl XI The Arizona Foosball League runs for four months and culminates in an all day event featuring the team and individual title matches, plus open events to introduce new players to the league. It normally draws around forty players during the day and night, and is always a good time. The 2013 Spring league held its finals on August 3 at Stinger’s Sports Bar in Peoria. Here are the results:

World Championships Warm-up Tournament Yes, there really is a World Championships of Foosball! Typically this is held in Dallas or Las Vegas in September. This past month the Cactus Moon in Mesa hosted a two day event with six tournaments for all skill levels, offering players who are planning to take a shot against the best in the world (plus those who are not!) a chance to warm up before the big one. Here are the results:
