Four hundred entries from 11 states competed September 1-4 at the Radisson Fort McDowell Resort in Scottsdale, Arizona in the BCAPL Southwest Regional Championships. With an $18,550 prize fund, the event was played on Diamond 7’ Smart Tables provided by Bad Boy’s Billiard Productions and produced by CueSports International, the parent company of the BCA Pool League. The tournament had seven divisions: Scotch Doubles, Women’s Open Singles, Men’s Advanced / Master Singles, Men’s Open Singles, Men’s / Mixed Open Teams and Women’s Open Teams. While the event is open to all BCA Pool League and USA Pool League members, a special Arizona rating 6 and Under Singles division was also included. Starting Thursday, 32 teams played in the single elimination Scotch Doubles event. Arizona husband and wife team, Mike and Susan Williams took home $500 for first place. Thursday evening was a special BCAPL swimming pool party in celebration of Labor Day Weekend. Players relaxed pool side with their friends, family and team mates under the warm Arizona summer night. Friday morning the four singles divisions revved up. The Men’s Open Singles (which also included any women master level players) had 71 entrants. In the finals were Benjamin Sutherland from Phoenix and Shaun Murphy from Ramona, California. Sutherland was the hot seat recipient after winning 7 consecutive matches including three hill-hill. However, Sutherland could not take out Murphy. After initially being tossed into the one loss side by North Dakotan Brian Erickson, Murphy rallied back winning 6 more matches before double dipped Sutherland 5-1 and 5-3. The Men’s Advanced / Master Singles

division had 10 players including top area players such as: Tres “Big Daddy” Kane, Carlos Avalos, Nick DeLeon and Pete Lhotka. A force on the AZ Desert Classic Tour, Lhotka defeated John Smith 6-5, Kane 6-2, Jeff Hagen 6-3 and Provencio in the finals 6-3 to take home the tidy sum of $500 for his 4 match win. This year the Women’s Open Singles field (which included Women Advanced players spotting a game) grew 38% from 23 players in 2010 to 37 this year. Sara “Millie” Miller, ranked 3rd on the Arizona Women’s Billiard Tour (AWBT), cruised into the hot seat taking out Nancy Kennedy 5-0, Lori Kinny 5-2, Bianca Lindahl 5-2, Vilene Stutesman 5-2 and Sue Orr 5-2. Eager for a rematch, Orr dominated Miller in the finals from the beginning, winning set one 4-2, then shutout Miller in set two 4-0 and walked with $600 for the win. Growing in popularity, the AZ 6 and Under Singles division fielded 66 entrants, up 47 players from 2010. The players in this handicapped division were for BCAPL Arizona players who had an AZ state rating 4 to 6. Sitting in the hot seat was Miguel Diaz (AZ 6) from Casa Grande, AZ. Diaz faced Joshua Welch from Yuma, in the finals. Diaz punted Welch to the one loss side during the hot seat match. Eager for revenge, Welch came back tougher than ever double dipping Diaz in the final 6-2, 6-1 to walk with the $700 first place prize. Teams took center stage Saturday September 3rd. The team competitions were handicapped based on the national BCAPL rating of the fielded team members. Open players were valued at 2 points, Advanced players 3 points, Master players 4 points and Grand Master 5 points. Each team fielded a 4 player roster. The player rating points were added together with

a minimum 8 and maximum 12 games to win based on the team members’ individual BCAPL national rating.

The Men’s / Mixed Open Team division fielded 23 (4 player) teams. Led by top AZ player Mitch Ellerman with team mates Chad Barber, JR Burkhart and Jerry Stuckart, Stinger’s Venom double dipped Knobby Bull Dawgs who was comprised of Burt Balancad, Pat Dicker, Larry Eans, Jose Gonzalez and Chris Shenker all from Arizona. The Women’s Open Team division had 10 teams vying for the $700 first place payday. Going into Sunday the team sitting in the hot seat was Arizona’s Q & Brew Q-Tease comprised of Leandrea Gaff, Tami Hathcock, Cathy Hamilton-Kelley and Veronica Poore. The team handily took out all in their path including long time veteran team Badd Azz Babes who they later would face in the finals. The Babes included Kitty Carroll, Sonia Flores, Sara “Millie” Miller, Sophia Morquecho and Susan Williams. In this case experience won out with the Babes bearing down and double dipping the Q-Tease for 1st place. CueSports International is dedicated to creating more choices for all players. First off, sorry about the lack of dart content on the cover this time around. One of the winners of the tournament that was slotted for that space thought it would be funny to photobomb the winners photo and I didn’t catch it til the last minute. Pure class. I want to welcome Balabushka Cues to our list of advertisers. They will be available at G-Cue Billiards Store. We actually had more content than we had room for this time around. Thought I would have to break down and go to 36 pages, but not yet. You will notice a new feature in the paper this month as we have advertiser spotlights on two of our advertisers. This is something new that we are trying in order to shine a little light on the various members of the Az Billiard and Dart News Family. Lots of benefits and tournaments coming up this month. Looking forward to seeing everyone out there at these events. -Mike

Stacy Allsup Wins Her Second Awbt Event

Stacy Allsup defeated Kristin Haney 9-8 to win Stop #4 at Bullshooters in Phoenix. This was Stacy’s second tour win and along with fellow Las Vegan, Rebecca Wagner, they have won all four AWBT events this season. For Kristin Haney, of Prescott Valley, this second place finish, along with a fourth in April, proves she is still a woman to be reckoned with in the Arizona pool scene.

Play began Saturday with 26 ladies from the southwest and Wisconsin. After the computer draw, one bracket in particular, was loaded with AWBT point leaders. Susan Williams had a first round win over Susan “Madhatter” Mello 7-2, but in the next round she lost to point leader, Rebecca Wagner, 7-5. Then Rebecca lost 7-5 to Kristin Haney who had just beaten Sara Miller. Just like that, four of the tournament favorites were in the loser’s bracket. Only Wagner and Mello would make it out to play on Sunday. In the winner’s semis on Sunday, Stacy Allsup defeated her road partner Amy Encinias and Susan Wilbur beat Kristin Haney. Stacy put herself in the hot seat with a 7-4 win over Wilbur. On the loser’s side, Jeri Engh had her best finish this year (5th) with her win over LA’s Barbara Lee 7-4. Susan Mello put an end to Rebecca Wagner’s quest for her third title in a row by beating her 7-4. Kristin Haney ended Engh’s tournament 7-2 and then had a tough win over Mello 7-5. Haney then avenged her earlier loss to Wilbur by 7-1 to climb back into the finals. The final was a very intense and deliberate affair. Neither player could gain more than a 2 game lead so it was no surprise that it came to hill-hill. In the final game both players would have their chances

at the table and the title, but Stacy was the one to make the final 9 ball. Congratulations Stacy Allsup on a great win.

In the 2nd Chance Tournament Nina Tagley wanted to redeem herself from Saturday’s play. Redeem it she did as she defeated Susan Williams in the final to take down the $100 first prize. We had 12 Second Chancer’s. Remember…the 2nd Chance is open to all women, even if you Front row: Susan Mello, Stacy Allsup, Rebecca Wagner and Amy Encinias. don’t play in the main Back row: Kristin Haney, Jeri Engh, Barbara Lee and Susan Wilbur event. It is $5.00 entry AZ. Phone: 623-937-9645. for those who did not play in main event. Located in the Great Skate Plaza Thanks again to Mike and Julie Bates and their staff for having us. Not only did they add $300 to the main event but also kicked in an additional $100 to the 2nd Chance event. Bullshooters has truly been a great supporter of Women’s pool. Thanks to our secret donor who added $100 to the main event prize fund. We encourage this type of behavior and hope others will follow. Thanks to my partner Kristie Ortega and Scott Waterhouse for all their hard work.

1st Stacy Allsup $240 2nd Kristin Haney $170 3rd Susan Wilbur $130 4th Susan Mello $100 5-6th Jeri Engh $70 Amy Encinias $70 7-8th Barbara Lee $40 Rebecca Wagner $40 9-12th Sara Miller $25 Pat Schultz $25 Justine Bishop $25 Nina Tagley $25

Our next event is October 8th & 9th. 8-ball on 7’ Diamond tables. It will be held at Stingers Sports Bar & Grill located at 10040 N. 43rd Avenue in Glendale,

Another Birthday Boy Strikes at Knobbys

Knobby’s held their monthly open 8 ball tournament on Friday September 8, 2011. The competition is always tough and they always treat the players with a great dinner. We celebrated Jose Gonzalez’s birthday with a surprise cake for him. 23 players Hopell Ampongan, Jose Gonzalez and Bruce Hirose showed up to battle it out in this monthly event. Due to the amount of players we had a race to 2 games on the winner side and a race to 1 on the losers side. Jose captured the hot seat and waited for Hopell Ampongan and Bruce Hirose to finish their great match. Jose played Hopell in the finals and they battled it out with Jose winning the first game. The second game Hopell got an 8 ball break. Finally, the third game became a safety battle with the birthday boy coming out with the victory. 1st Place Jose Gonzalez $320.00 2nd place Hopell Ampongan $150.00 3rd place Bruce Hirose $70.00 4th place Scott Perry $30.00 5th/6th place Burt Balancad and Paul Vasi $10.00 Ea. Knobby’s next open 8 ball tournament will be held Friday October 7, 2011.

Hopell Ampongan was on fire and beat Tracie Hammam 8-1 to advance on the one loss side, and giving Tracy a 7th/8th finish with Ben.

Brian Reich beat Ed Scott Hill/Hill to advance to the hot seat match, while Jerry Stuckart came back to win Hill/Hill against Jeff Hagen to face Brian for the hot seat. On the one loss side, Hopell beat Ed Hill/Hill and Jeff beat Todd 8-5. Todd and Ed went home with 5th/6th place. Jerry played very strong in the hot seat match and beat Brian 8-3. Jeff and Hopell were playing for 4th place and Jeff was able to come out on top winning 8-5. Jeff’s tournament would come to an end after Brian beat him 8-3 giving Jeff 3rd place. In the finals Brian took the first set 8-6. The second set was a battle with both players shooting well. Brian started out strong with a 5-1 lead. Jerry was able to fight back and they went to the Hill. They decided to split the winner take all pot of $420 and play for the rest. It was a great last rack for $220 with lots of safeties. I really look forward to this event because to me it’s like a big family reunion and you all make it special. The Fall Season begins September 6th! Can’t wait to see you all this season!

Arizona Annual All League Invitational

Well, if you missed this one last year, you sure don’t want to miss it this year. We all had the privilege of watching some of the best billiards short of ESPN. All of the players in this tournament are local league players from the Phoenix area. This event is open to all active league players in this area, no matter what league you play for. If you were not represented last year, please be sure to ask your league operator about getting you in this year. Our first tournament, last year, had 51 players. This time we are looking for a lot more. Be sure to put this on your calendar. If you intend to go to any of the league events in Las Vegas this year then this is the best tune up you could possibly get. We will be holding the event at Bullshooters again this year (corner of 35th Ave. and Peoria Ave.). The dates for this year will be Nov. 16th-20th, if we get participation from the rest of the state (limited to the first 128 entries). If we only use the leagues in Phoenix again the dates will be Nov. 18th-20th (limited to the first 64 entries). Hope the leagues from the rest of the state join in the fun. Check the papers next month for the final dates. Play will begin at 10am on the first day. Come on out and enjoy some of the best local talent, good food, cold drinks and all the other fun at Bullshooters with us. Mike and his crew are waiting to serve you. Come out and support your favorite local player and bring your friends. This will be a tournament not to miss. See you there. Chuck “The Sniper” Webb

John & Harry John at Jimbos

October 2011

Ye/Davis and Alvi/Suzi undefeated

Lisa Ye and Denise Davis scored an undefeated run through the field at the Stingers Monthly Ladies Only Darts event on September 17th. Ye & Davis took the Queen Seats with a win over the team of Jamie & Jen.

John & Harry John

John & Harry John came out on top of a very competitive weekly darts event at Jimbo’s on Friday September 16th. John & Harry beat Kix & Tausha to take the hot-seat and watch the fireworks on the one loss side. The team of Pete & Madi lost to Tom & Amanda in a 501 rubber match that saw Pete start things off with 8 straight bulls, only to see his team lose when Tom throw a 160 to close out the game. Tom & Amanda had lost to Kix & Tausha earlier in the tourney and would lose to them again in a cricket rubber match that saw Tausha throw a 7-mark to take control of the match for her and her partner. The finals saw Kix throw a 9-mark and Tausha throw a 7-mark in a losing effort in cricket. The match came down to a cricket rubber match that saw Tausha with a hat-trick near the end, but her and her partner were still unable to defeat the steady play from both John and Harry John in the finals.

This left Jamie & Jen facing off against Tina & Marie in the semifinals. Jamie & Jen won that match, but would have to settle for second as they lost to Lisa and Denise again in the finals.

The players weren’t ready to go home though, so they stuck around for a second open tournaSuzi & Alvi ment that saw Alvi & Suzi defeat Teri & Bruce for the hot-seat and then defeat Kelli & Ken in the finals for the undefeated tournament victory.

Ask Mike By Mike Bates When I play in a tournament, what is proper etiquette? Should I let the higher player go first, switch off or what? My first question to you is this, Do you want to win? If so, let the higher player call the shots. Some very good players will opt to let you go first if they think they can win the match easily. This is no disrespect for the other team, just giving a lower player the shot of going first. But you should know it is not automatic and when he or she

wants the lead, let them take it. Some players (whether right or wrong) take offense to low players who jump up and say “I’ll go first in 501 you go first in cricket.” I know you’re there to have fun and most of the better players are as well, but your best shot at winning is that player going first. Will they hit every time? No! And just because their first round wasn’t great doesn’t mean you should start next time either. Also, every dog has his day. Don’t get mad if a lower player shoots his or her shorts off, it happens, live with it. It is

fun to rag those players (if you know them well enough) And I do often, but do it in fun. I don’t care who you are, you have thrown a dart and hit a triple that you weren’t shooting at. Remember the first thing in a dart tournament is to have fun, but don’t play if you are “fall down hammered” or you are just going to wheel your darts at the board like a baseball player. You both want to have a good experience, no matter what the skill levels are.

that girl I’m going to quit, she is terrible.” This was a 2.2 shooter. Really, look in the mirror or better yet look at your league stats! Play the tournament, have fun, and communicate with your partner, you may not know who he or she is. This is my opinion and I may be wrong, but I doubt it..

And I heard this the other day, a very below average player said “If I draw

David Fatum Shoots perfect game to win at Bull Shooters

About 20 years ago a small bar in Peoria ran a high score dart tournament and it was a lot of fun for all who played and watched. Bull Shooters decided to try it out to see how it would go, and from the players reaction we will do it again. It took 6 weeks of qualifying and several attempts by lots of players, but on Sunday, Sept. 4th it all happened. 40 players qualified in three levels. 28.0 points per dart and above, 23-27.99 and 23 and under. Three players qualified at the top of those levels and they received $40 each before the tournament started. They were David Fatum with a 1422, Mike Bates (1132) and Jamie Bates (855). In the top Bracket, if you didn’t score 1200 points you were probably going to lose. The semi final match was a battle of the two top seated players; JC Martinez and David Fatum. In the third and final game both players started with 5 straight hat tricks, (30 bulls in a row between them). JC missed one round and Dave continued his torrid streak. It turned out he needed them all as JC recorded nine hat tricks, but not to be outdone, David finished it off with a perfect 1500 game to garnish another $20 for the perfect game. Kenny Wright won the middle division beating Daniel Vinesky in the finals and Len Orlando slipped by Marie Franque to win the lower bracket.

Jamie Bates and Dave Fatum

There was no entry fee and a $600 total payout. All it takes is $1 to qualify each time. Qualifying for the next tournament starts this weekend.

JR & Amado Top Scotch Team at Groggys

Advertiser Spotlight Dave’s on Northern

When Hudson’s closed on I-10 and Northern, the area lost a great neighborhood bar. But when one door closes, another one opens; and it was the perfect opportunity for longtime Valley bar owners Dave and Lori Delos to take over the space and open Daves on Northern. Dave and Lori have been in the bar business here in Phoenix for fifteen years and were already the owners of three other local bars (Marino’s. The Other Room and Tony’s), and were in the market for a small neighborhood bar to become their fourth room. It seemed to be a no-brainer to the Delos’ as soon as they checked out the space. “We felt comfortable as soon as we walked in the door”, said Dave Delos.

Amado & JR / Randy Kinney & Jim Money

With the Southwest Regional being held the first weekend in September, Groggy’s held their monthly scotch doubles tournament over the weekend of the 17th and 18th. There were 12 very good teams competing for over $ 600.00 in prize money.

As comfortable as the space was, there was still work to be done before Dave’s on Northern could be opened. The DJ Booth and dance floor were immediately removed, and new carpet was laid down in the room. Removing the dance floor allowed room for three bar tables that could be located across the bar from the 4 soft top dart boards. “It was important to have a setup that gave both dart players and pool players plenty of room” said Delos. The Delos’ also brought some familiar faces that their customers might be familiar with as bartenders from the other three Delos rooms are picking up shifts at Dave’s.

The hot seat match found JR & Amado playing Jim Money & Randy Kinney. After a very close match, JR & Amado came away with the hot seat.

The room is equipped with seven TV’s, and two more are on the way, to allow customers to catch their favorite sports events.

The 3rd place match pitted Randy & Jim against James and Donald. Randy & Jim were not about to be denied a second chance to beat JR & Amado and sent Donald & James away with 3rd place.

The Delos’ are already sponsoring Softball teams out of the room and are looking to sponsor both dart and pool teams. So if you are looking for a new home for your team, stop by and talk to Dave or Lori. You can also say “hi” to Leslie, Chrissy, Brandy or Ashley; the friendly bartenders there.

This set up a rematch between JR & Amado and Jim & Randy. The rematch went the same way as the first meeting though as JR & Amado took 1st while Jim & Randy took 2nd. JR & Amado took home $ 405 while Jim and Randy received $ 190.

Delos said his goal with opening the new room was to have a quiet local bar where people can see their friends, watch a ball game and enjoy a game of pool or darts. They seem to be well on their way to meeting that goal.

As always, Groggy’s, provided a great place to play, great service and excellent food. Hope to see all of you there next month.

English, American Style By Roger Long Advanced Certified Instructor If you’re around the game of pool for very long you will undoubtedly hear the word “English” used frequently; but often it is used errantly. In pool, what English means is: sidespin. The sidespin in question generally refers to that which is applied to the cue ball with the tip of the cue stick, but occasionally it can be sidespin that is transferred from one ball to another. Where players sometimes err is when they make statements like, “I hit it with high center English,” or “I hit it with low center English.” How can the ball have any English (sidespin) on it if it is hit right on the vertical axis? It can’t. Therefore, straight follow and draw

shots that do not require any sidespin for cue ball position purposes will not be hit with English. Now let’s address another fallacy concerning English. Many players believe that English will alter the natural direction that a ball takes after being struck with the tip or another ball. For instance, they believe that hitting a cue ball on the left side will cause it to curve to the left, and that hitting it on the right side will make it curve to the right. They also believe that English applied to the cue ball will have a great affect on the direction a contacted object ball will take. They are wrong on both counts. A rolling ball can have sidespin on it and it will still roll in a straight line. It’s only when a ball takes off sliding or back spinning with English (when hit at the horizontal centerline

or below) that the friction between the ball and the cloth will be great enough to force the ball off of a straight path and swerve it to the side of its applied English. (This is why we are taught to hit the cue ball with a level cue if we want it to travel in a straight line. Hitting down on the ball causes it to take off with a slide or backspin.) Where English achieves its most effective results is when the ball comes off a cushion. The natural angle of rebound can be drastically changed with the use of English. Expert players are well versed in the use of inside, outside, running, and reverse English, and use those various side spins to play for position on subsequent shots.

want to attach a slang label to almost anything that intrigues us. Second, even though it was a Frenchman who introduced the leather tip to billiards – thereby allowing sidespin to be imparted to a cue ball – it was Englishmen who first introduced the tip and sidespin to American players. Whenever sidespin was put on a ball after that, it was said to have “English” on it. By the way, Englishmen don’t call sidespin “English,” they simply call it side. Maybe they should have called it “French,” instead?

So why do we call sidespin, “English,” rather than calling it side spin? Well, to explain that, we first have to realize that it’s a natural American tendency to

• Accessories Yes, you read the title right. It does say, “Milk Dud tips.” But what are they, you might ask? Unless you are a frequent visitor to the discussion forums at AZBilliards.com, you have probably never heard of these tips before. On the forums, however, milk dud tips have been discussed at length, and what the forums have reported is that this is the tip that the top player in the world has supposedly been using for several years now.

Quality Work

The reason these tips are called “milk duds” is because of the way they are processed. The process involves taking one particular brand of tip and soaking it in milk for a certain length of time, and then letting it dry while pressing it to a certain thickness. The end result is a firm (not too soft, not too hard) tip that will hold its shape and will grab the cue ball well. Maestros Pro Shop is now stocking milk dud tips in two thickness choices: .175-inch and .215-inch. We offer either installed for a very modest $12, which is less than half the cost of most other high-grade tips on the market.

Low Prices. All “While-You-Wait” cue repair services require an appointment. Please Call (602) 320-9553 for appointment.

Bob Miser is certainly no stranger to pool tournament players on the westside, but what they might not know about Miser is that he is the co-owner of Tobacco Mizer on 43rd Ave and Peoria.

Trademark Rights Of Adam, Balabushka And Helmstetter Cue Lines Acquired

PHOENIX, AZ, SEPTEMBER 15, 2011: Robert Mallen, owner of G Cue Billiard Store of Tempe, Arizona, announced the acquisition of the Adam, Balabushka and Helmstetter trademark rights as of August 1, 2011. Until the recent purchase, The Adam Cue Company was the sole company with the rights to the trademarks. Mr. Mallen brings 18 years of experience in the billiard industry as the owner of the G Cue Billiard Store in Tempe, Arizona, the TAP (The Association for Pool) Billiard League in Arizona and as a dedicated billiard player.

Miser, an Arizona pool player for the last 20 years, teamed up with longtime friend Dick Garrick a little over a year ago to open the store and business is booming. Booming enough that plans are in motion to open a second location in Flagstaff in the very near future.

As the exclusive manufacturer and licensee of the Adam, Balabushka and Helmstetter legendary brands, Mr. Mallen has plans to develop and expand the product line of merchandise for each entity. Mr. Mallen states, “The Company will be distributing cues and additional products under the new name of “Balabushka Cue Company.”

Tobacco Mizer is a store for tobacco lovers (works well considering the name) who aren’t interested in continuing to pay the high prices for tobacco these days. Tobacco Mizer’s offers everything you might need to roll your own cigarettes at home, or you can use one of their three rolling machines to roll your cigarettes right there in the store. With their extensive selection of 100% fresh tobacco, Mizer’s can match the taste of any brand that a customer currently smokes. In addition to the rolling products, Tobacco Mizer has a complete selection of pipe tobacco, premium cigars, smokeless tobacco, electronic cigarettes and smoke odor eliminating candles and sprays. With the high cost of tobacco these days, any smoker really owes it to their wallet to check out what Tobacco Mizer has to offer. If you are not a smoker, swing by anyway and say “hi” to Bob.

Ed Scott held off a late charge by Tim Rachu to win the August 8’s & Under 9-Ball Monthly on August 27th and 28th at Metro Sportz Bar.

Arizona Billiard & Dart News

Ed Scott Holds on For Metro Win

While the field of 24 players might have been less than hoped for, it was still packed with some of the best 8-rated players that the West Side has to offer. Players finishing out of the money included Hopell Ampongan, Burt Balancad, Tommy Vergis, Jimmy Brewer and BBQ. Ed Scott took the hot-seat with a lopsided 8-2 win over Joe Chyzy, who was having a great tournament until he ran into Scott. The action on the one loss side was exciting with some great matches. Rachu eliminated Mike Lalumiere 7-3, while Susan Williams and Bernie Stor were engaged in a catfight of their own. Stor led the match 5-2, only to see Williams come back to tie the score at 5-5. Williams didn’t let her foot off the gas as she won the next three of the next four games for the 8-6 win. Next up was Rachu vs Williams. Rachu commented before the match that he had watched Williams play Stor and he “couldn’t give her a chance”. And he didn’t. Rachu cruised to a quick 7-2 win.

Ed Scott

Rachu kept his hot play going in the semi-final match against Chyzy and raced out to a 5-0 lead. Chyzy wasn’t going to go home without a fight though and won five of the next six games to get within one at 6-5. That close to the finish line, both players tightened up a bit, but Rachu held on for the 7-5 win.

From 2-2, Scott won three games for a 5-2 lead, but trailing 6-3, Rachu won three racks to tie things at 6-6. This left Rachu needing one game, while Scott needed two in the “race to full handicap” match. Scott won the next rack for hill-hill, but a miss on the 8-ball by Scott left Rachu with a win and the fans with a second match to determine a winner.

The first set of the double elimination finals saw both Scott and Rachu go on multiple rack runs.

The second set of the finals was a much closer affair with the score tied at 1-1, 2-2, 4-4 and 5-5, before

PAGE 27

Scott turned things up a notch and won three straight games for the 8-5 victory and first place. Scott pocketed $668 for first place, while Rachu settled for $240 in second place prize money with no sidepots. Chyzy earned $286 for third with the side pots, and Williams took home $162 for fourth.

Jacobs No Longer A Bridesmaid

October 2011

Bob Jacobs escaped the role of bridesmaid and finally won a Kitty’s monthly at the 7’s & Under 9-Ball event on September 3rd.

Jacobs had settled for second place after losing to Jack Cheesman last month, but this month Bob Jacobs was a different story as Jacobs cruised to the hot-seat with a 6-3 win over Johnny Garcia. On the one loss side, Andrew Roche was mowing down players in an attempt to avenge his earlier loss to Jacobs. Roche had wins on the left side of the board against Amado Martinez and Tim Rachu before running into the immovable object called Johnny Garcia. Garcia made quick work of Roche to the tune of 7-2. The double elimination finals got started in the worst way for Jacobs as he struggled keeping the cue-ball out of the pocket on his early breaks. Garcia took an early 3-1 lead, but Jacobs fought back to tie the score at 3-3 and 4-4. From there, Garcia took advantage of a 9-ball break and his usual style of no-nonsense play to win the match 7-4 and force a second match to determine a final winner. Whatever problems Jacobs had with his break in the first set were gone in the second set as he raced to a 3-0 lead and never looked back. Garcia would get close at 3-2, but Jacobs win the next three games for a one-sided 6-2 win and first place in the event.

Not buying into the side pots hurt Jacobs, as he settled for $160 in first place prize money. Garcia earned $190 for second with all of the sides.

Pulley & Johnson Win Kitty’s Scotch

Layton Thomas, Steve Stowers, Kitty, Amanda Pulley & Brad Johnson

Small but mighty, that is how I would describe the 10 scotch doubles teams vying for their share of over $ 630 in prize money on August 27th at Kitty’s in Phoenix. Anything the field lacked in quantity, was certainly made up in quality. The hot seat match pitted Steve Stowers & Layton Thomas against Amanda Pulley & Brad Johnson. After a great duel, Amanda and Brad held the hot seat. John Walberka & Diana Clayton met Steve & Layton on the one loss side, with John & Diana taking 3rd. This set up a rematch between Steve & Layton against Brad & Amanda to decide a final winner. After a tense match, Brad & Amanda took 1st and Steve & Layton took 2nd. For their efforts, Brad & Amanda took home $360 while Steve & Layton received $230. As always, Kitty, provided a great place to play and great service. Hope to see all of you there next month.

Arizona Billiard & Dart News

Chris Carpenter, Rick Taylor, Sophia Morquecho & Burt Balancad

Small and strong, that describes the 9 scotch doubles teams vying for their share of $590 in prize money at Skip & Jan’s on September 10th. The action was fast and furious with everyone out to win. The hot seat match pitted Chuck Bobbitt & Emmitt Webb versus Burt Balancad & Sophia Morquecho. After a great hill-hill duel, Burt & Sophia held the hot seat. The 3rd place match found Chuck & Emmitt against Chris Carpenter & Rick Taylor. After a few tense moments, Chuck & Emmitt came away with 3rd place. This set up a rematch between Burt & Sophia and Chris & Rick. Burt & Sophia had sent Chris and Rick to the one loss side in the first match. After an exciting match, Burt & Sophia took 1st and Chris & Rick took 2nd. For their efforts, Burt & Sophia took home $260 while Chris & Rick received $250. As always, Skip and Jan’s, provided a great place to play, great service and excellent food. Hope to see all of you there next month.
