What a great one pocket tournament that was at Bullshooters in October. It was especially nice to see all of the fans come out to support the event. A big thanks to “Big Daddy” Tres Kane for digging into his own pocket to put that event on. This issue could be sub-titled “All The Scott Frost That Fits, We Print”. Scott is taking this whole winning streak to a new level. Looks like maybe someone should put a bounty on his head for someone to eliminate him from a tournament. Check out the ad on page 2 from the G-Cue Billiard Store. They are giving away cubes of Balabushka chalk to any league players. I use it and I love it. You should probably try it anyways. I want to apologize for forgetting to congratulate Enoch’s for their New Times Best of Phoenix award for best Neighborhood Bar in the West Valley. Sorry about that. Until December... - Mike

Arizona Billiard & Dart News Bullshooters in Phoenix was a veritable One Pocket extravaganza over the weekend of October 12th - 14th with twenty nine players competing in the $4000 added One Pocket Event. A one pocket event in Arizona just wouldn’t be the same without Scott Frost playing, and Scott would be joined by such notables as Jose Parica, Louis Ulrich, Jay Helfert, Bernie Pettipiece, Pete Lhotka, Tommy Tokoph, Nick Tafoya, Mike Pankoff, Gus Briseno and Preacher Ronn. While all eyes were on the Freezer at this event, he would be sent to the one loss side late on Saturday by Gus Briseno in the winner’s side final four. Frost looked to have come down with something and was having problems focusing on even the easiest shot on the table, and Briseno didn’t need any help in sending Scott to the left side of the board. The other final four match on the winner’s side saw Eric Young facing off against California’s Louis Ulrich. Young had already had a great tournament with wins over Parica and Tommy Tokoph to his credit. Ulrich would be another story though, as he got the best of Young and sent him to the one loss side. On the one loss side, Freezer got things started with a win over Tommy Tokoph and Young was eliminated by Bernie Pettipiece. Bernie had lost his first match of the tournament to Briseno, but put together another one of his patented runs through the one loss side with wins over Rod Elliott, Helfert, Terry Osborne, Parica and Young. That winning streak would be brought to a screeching stop by Frost with a 3-0 beatdown.

November 2012

Frost Wins at Bullshooters The match for the hot-seat saw Louis Ulrich score a 3-1 win over Briseno, sending Briseno to the one loss side for a rematch with Frost. Frost looked to be running away with the rematch and led the match 2-0, before Briseno dug down and took his game to another level. Louis Ulrich, Scott Frost and Gus Briseno (Photo courtesy of Rick Schmitz) Briseno wowed the One Pocket event in 2013 for one lucky tournacrowd with some ment player. That player would be Jose Gonzalez amazing shots and even more amazing run-outs to tie the score at 2-2, before Frost finally closed out the All in all, the three day weekend had to be considmatch at 3-2. ered a great success with full crowds watching all Louis Ulrich may not have played many tournaments in Arizona, but he quickly found out in the finals just how hard Scott Frost can be to beat in a one pocket event. The race to five final match was over almost before it begas as Frost ran away with the first four games. Ulrich would get on the board in rack five, but Frost quickly closed out the match and the tournament win in rack six for the 5-1 victory. Along with the final day of one pocket play, an eight player mini tournament was held on Sunday and Brett Huth defeated Martin Bick in the finals for the tournament win. Not only did Tres Kane put up the added money for the main event, he also paid for an entry to the US Open

of the action every day.

Tournament promoter Tres Kane thanked Mike Bates at Bullshooters for hosting the event and for adding money to the mini tournament on Sunday. Kane also thanked Lenny Marshall for streaming the event all weekend long. And all of the fans thanked Tres for the great event! John Smith Undefeated at Knobbys

Knobby’s held their monthly open 8 ball tournament on Friday October 5th, 2012.

Seventeen players came out to get a chance at $440.00 in total prize money. John Smith played Tyson Cole for the hot Tyson Cole, Steve Henderson and John Smith seat. John was shooting well as he won the match 2-0. Meanwhile, Steve Henderson beat Pat Dicker giving Pat $20.00 for 4th place. Steve played Tyson and Tyson ran the table after Steve scratched on the break. The next game Steve ran the table, leaving this a hill hill match that Tyson won. Steve got $60.00 for 3rd place. Tyson had his rematch with John. Both players had a break and run on each other but John still was on fire as he won the hill hill match. John took home $230.00 for 1st place and Tyson got $130.00 for 2nd place. Knobby’s next tournament will be held Friday Nov. 2nd, 2012. Please note this tournament is now a 9 and under in November. Las Vegas’ Stacy Allsup beat the best that Arizona, New Mexico and Las Vegas had to offer to win the Arizona Women’s Billiard Tour’s October tour stop at Bullshooters on October 28th. The twenty seven player field was full of top talent with nine of the top ten players on the points list competing. Fans in attendance were treated to a great hill-hill match between the top two players on the points list late Saturday when Susan Williams (#1) and Angel Paglia (#2) faced off. That match went to Williams 7-6 and Angel was on her way to the one loss side. As if that hill-hill match wasn’t enough, Williams came back on Sunday to defeat Terri Johnson McCauley 7-6 and then Stacy Allsup 7-6 for the hot-seat. Allsup took a short trip to the one loss side and found fellow Las Vegas player Rebecca Wagner waiting. Wagner had lost her first match of the event to Sara Miller, but came back with seven straight wins; including wins over Johnson-McCauley and a hill-hill over Paglia.

Stacy Allsup Wins AWBT Stop

5-5. Williams got to the hill first at 8-6 and almost three fouled Allsup in the 15th rack. Allsup kicked out of the three foul attempt and went on to win that rack for an 8-7 scoreline. One rack later, things were tied at hill-hill and one more rack later, it was Stacy Allsup pocketing the final 9-ball for the 9-8 win and first place. Sunday’s second chance tournament saw Kristen Haney defeat Jaye Succo in the finals for the win. The AWBT’s season finale will be at Bullshooters on December 1st and 2nd.

Tour Director’s Kristie Ortega and Tres Kane expressed their thanks to Mike Bates of Bullshooters, as well as Jose Gonzalez and other anonymous sponsors of this event.

The semi-final match would go back and forth with Allsup taking the match’s first two rack lead at 6-4. Wagner won the next two games to send the match to hill-hill (of course), before Allsup pocketed the final nine ball for the win and another shot at Susan Williams in the finals. The final match would be an extended race to nine and it couldn’t have been closer. Williams held an early 3-1 lead before Allsup tied the match at 3-3. Allsup then took a two rack lead at 5-3, before Williams came back to tie things at

Frost Earns #12 The Hard Way at DCT Stop

The game was bar-table 10-ball on October 21st and 22nd when the Desert Classic Tour visited Stingers in Phoenix; and a field of thirty nine of the best players in Arizona were ready to fight it out for the win.

Scott Frost put his eleven tournament winning streak on the line in this one, and “The Mailman” Chuck Evans quickly showed Frost how he felt about the winning streak, as Evans defeated Frost in the first round and sent The Freezer to the one loss side. Evans would ride the winners side until the final four on Sunday, when he dropped an 8-2 decision to Nick “Nikon” DeLeon. The other final four match saw Mitch Ellerman send Larry Olsen west by the score of 10-1. On the one loss side, Tres Kane eliminated Pete Lhotka 8-2 and Frost continued his comeback tour with a 10-5 win over Tucson’s Chris Paradowski. Next up on the one loss side, Kane lost to Chuck Evans 8-2 and Frost beat Olsen 10-5. Scott then got his revenge against The Mailman by the score of 10-4. Back on the winners side, was the battle of the Valley’s young guns and DeLeon proved to be the bigger gun with an 8-2 win over Ellerman. Ellerman then went to the left side of the board to face Frost. That match was a close one, with Scott earning the 10-9 win for a place in the true double elimination finals against Deleon.

Many a player has learned the lesson of how hard it is to beat Scott Frost when you let him get close to the finish line. DeLeon would learn this lesson this time as Frost won the first set of the finals 10-3.

Scott Frost

DeLeon would get no chance to regroup for the second set as Frost turned up the heat. Freezer broke and ran seven racks to take complete control of the match and went on to score a 10-1 win and notch his twelfth straight tournament win. With the win, Frost jumped from 5th to 2nd on the DCT points list, with two events remaining to be played. The next stop on the Desert Classic Tour will be November 17th and 18th at Bullshooters in Phoenix. The game will be bartable 9-ball. The DCT has also announced that their season finale will be December 8th - 9th at Stingers in Phoenix.

Freezer Wins Preacher Ronn’s One Pocket

A dozen ghouls and goblins showed up for October’s Preacher Ronn’s One Pocket Tournament in Tempe, AZ. As usual we kicked off right on time thanks to our faithful tournament director Dan Shoe. The field matched the matrix with players showing up from 6 to 10-4. In addition to our regulars we were joined by a couple or newcomers or fairly new-comers Carl Stewart and HMan. H-Man declined to give us his real name so we’ll be keeping an eye on this infiltrator. In round one matches H-Man drew a BYE and that would be his only win of the day falling victim to Lenny (The Lock) Marshall and Preacher Ronn. In similar fashion Joe Watson from Tucson won his match against BYE and then fell victim to Scott Frost and Eric Young. Joe knew that he was on the watch list and rumor has it that he dumped his matches to maintain his rating. Good job Joe. Eric took his shot at Scott without much success. Brett Huth also beat BYE but broke the trend by going deep on the winner’s side and eventually ending up third. Good shooting Brett. Joe Krajnyck dispatched Chuck our new guy and Joe Watson finished him off on the One-Loss side. Chuck you need to draw someone besides Joe’s and Joe sorry about the name but that’s the best I can do without spell checker. Rod Elliot put in a good showing sending Bernie Pettipiece to the One-Loss side. Of course what tournament would be complete without the classic match-up between Bernie and Preacher Ronn? Sorry Ronn, I guess you just need to step up your game a notch. Scott would eventually capture the Hot seat in a Hill/Hill match over Brett Huth. Meanwhile, on the One-Loss side Bernie, Eric, Ronn and Rod were making a deep run. Rod sent Ronn to the sidelines and Bernie sent Lenny to the bar for

a beer to drown his sorrows. That would set up the rematch between Rod and Bernie (The Burmese Python). This match would have a different result as Bernie wrapped on the coils eventually constricting Rod until he breathed his last. That brought us down to the final three Brett, Bernie and Scott.

In a match worthy of the nature channel the Burmese Python brought an Scott Frost and Bernie Pettipiece agonizing slow death to Brett and earned his way back to the finals. So it’s the finals, the Burmese Python against Scott (The Freezer) Frost. Scott put game one of this extended Complete Payouts: race on the board and had a commanding lead in game two. But Bernie, but went to sleep just enough for the 1st Scott Frost Python to come with a fantastic run to notch games two 2nd Bernie Pettipiece and three. This was all it took for The Freezer to wake 3rd Brett Huth up and from then on it was all Scott. Thanks to all the players. Brett took home $65 for 3rd, Bernie settled for 2nd and $125 while Scott took home 1st and $220. A special thank you goes out to Kolby’s for hosting and OnTheRailTv for streaming. We’ll see you all next month on Nov 10th. Preacher Ronn

2012 APA 9 Ball Southwest Challenge Pool Tournament

APA players returned home last week from Vegas where they attended the 2012 9 Ball Southwest Challenge Pool Tournament held at the Riviera Hotel and Casino. 103 three player teams from all over the Southwest competed for $25,000 in Cash at this popular annual event. 3 of our 11 Phoenix teams made it to the money rounds which paid down to 17th place. Our highest placing team made it all the way to 5th and won $480. Brad Andrews, Jeremiah Buckman, and Tanner Lopez, whom all play on the same team in our Main Street Billiards Thursday night division, won a paid spot to this event in a tune up tournament held last month at Main Street Billiards. One other team, Ed LaRue, and Phil and Lisa Detro also earned a paid spot to this event during a different tune up tournament held a couple weeks earlier at Bullshooters. $2500 was paid to the 1st place team. Everyone had a great time playing in both the main event and the all night mini tournaments. There were vendors there to take care of the player’s equipment and accessories, as well as souvenirs from the event.

In March, APA will host the 8 Ball version of this same event at the same location in Vegas. It will be the same 3 person team format except the game will be 8 Ball instead of 9 Ball. Teams can start signing up in Feburary so anyone interested in playing contact the APA Phoenix Metro league operators.

APA Phoenix Metro held its session ending Summer 2012 Tri-Cities Tournament on October 13th & 14th at Main Street Billiards in Mesa. This is the 1st step in the year long “Road To Vegas “ for teams hoping to win the prize slots awarded to the 5 winners of the City Tournaments in May and June 2013. It is also the awards and cash payout ceremony where there is over $20,000.00 to be given to the top placing teams throughout the session. In addition to the money each one of the 36 1st and 2nd place teams receive trophies, plaques plus $50.00 are awarded to the 50 top gun winners for the session. On the first day 16 teams met to battle it out for the 4 slots to the City tournament in June. The final matches included team Usual Suspects against Q Wizards and A Break from the Kids against The Pack Rats on the loser side. Winning the 2 slots were Usual Suspects and A Break from the Kids. On the winners side we had VFW Poolplayers against Ocean’s Eight and The Outcasts against Phoenix Ballers. The 2 slots went to Ocean’s Eight and Phoenix Ballers. On day 2 another 16 teams came to battle it out for the next 4 slots to the City tournament. 8 slots are awarded in each of the three Tri-Cities played at the end of session bringing 24 teams to compete in the coveted City tournament in June. With Spank U Very Much against A Touch of Chaos and Off in the Corner against Slop Shots on the loser side and Cues & Brews against Drunk Monkeys and KRAZY 3IGHT’Z against Misfits on the winners side. The 4 teams that took the slots on the 2nd day were, Spank U Very Much, Slop Shots, Cues & Brews and Misfits. It was a great success, there were many giveaways handed out by the League Operators that included cues and cases, DVD’s and other pool accessories. Everyone played well, had some fun and we watched some great matches played. Congratulations to all the winning teams and all the teams that attended the tournament you were among some of the best teams we have. APA

The WPBL (World Professional Billiard League) recently announced who the players and their respective teams will for the Bonus Ball inaugural season scheduled to start Nov. 29 in Las Vegas. Playing for the Phoenix Flames will be: Scott Frost (captain), Tommy Kennedy, and Manuel Chau. Scott “The Freezer” Frost needs no introduction to local pool enthusiasts as he has been Arizona’s only true male pro, and its top player, for over a decade now. Also, the national pool community regards Scott as one of the very top one-pocket players in the world, and it’s that one-pocket experience that may prove to be a big advantage to the Phoenix team in Bonus Ball.

Pro players picked for Phoenix Flames

Arizona Billiard & Dart News

The previously announced start date of Nov. 8th for the league was moved back a few weeks because of last-minute complications. The Flames’ first match is scheduled for Sunday, Dec. 2 at 6:00PM, and will be against the Boston Young Guns, represented by the power-packed trio of Mike Dechaine, Thorsten Hohmann, and Jesse Engel. More information on the league can be found at www. playbonusball.com. The entire staff at Arizona Billiard & Dart News sincerely hopes that all of Arizona’s billiard fans will join us in welcoming and supporting our new pro team. By AZBDN Staff

Tom “The Juggler” Kennedy needs only slightly more introduction than Frost since he has made several promotional visits to the Phoenix area in the past. As far as the rest of the pool community is concerned, Tommy is well known because of his U. S. Kittys 12 & Under Split

November 2012 Eric Lervold went undefeated through the field of eighteen other players to win the Kitty’s 7 & Under 9-Ball tournament on October 13th.

Curtis Neal, Shawn Ashwest, Mark Rocha, Amado Martinez, Russell Huber and Rick Morris

Kitty’s 12 & Under Scotch Doubles event on October 20th saw nineteen teams throw their names in the hat for a chance at $1,200.00 in prize money. The hot-seat match pitted Rick Morris and Russell Huber against Amado Martinez and Mark Rocha. Rick and Russell, not to be denied, won the hot seat 7-3. The match for 2nd and 3rd found Curtis Neal and Shawn Ashwest against Amado and Mark. After an exciting match, Curtis and Shawn claimed 3rd place and took home $170.00. This set up a rematch between Rick and Russell against Amado and Curtis. Not to be denied, Amado and Curtis won the 1st set 7-2. Due to the lateness of the hour, everyone decided to split. Each team went home with $525.00. As always, Kitty and her staff provided a great venue and excellent service.

Lervold Wins at Kittys

Lervold took the hot-seat with a lopsided 7-2 win over Sal Giaconia, Eric Lervold, Kitty and Sal Giaconia and made himself comfortable waiting for an opponent in the finals. On the one loss side, Larry Olson was looking to find a way back to the right side of the board after a loss to Giaconia in the winners side final four. Olson’s first opponent on the one loss side was Angel Tafoya, who Olson had sent to the one loss side earlier in the event. Olson would beat Angel again in this match 7-3 and Tafoya would settle for 4th place. Olson’s tournament would end in third place after a 6-4 loss to Giaconia in the semi-finals. The final match would see Giaconia try to beat Lervold twice, but he wouldn’t even get close as Lervold scored the 7-4 win for first place. Arizona Billiard & Dart News We introduced the new Balabushka Performance Chalk in early 2012, and the majority of the reviews that have come back are excellent; however, we have had a few players who voiced concerns about the chalk. Their claims were primarily “too many miscues.” This puzzles me since the chalk adheres much better than other high-performance chalks and the standard brands. Therefore, I want to explain the purpose of the formula and the proper method for using this chalk correctly so players do not miscue and increase their performance. Balabushka Chalk was formulated to require less chalking between shots which makes it last at least five times longer than the standard brands and produces five times less dust - making your table, balls and hands cleaner. After hearing several comments about miscues, it occurred to me that these players are most likely over-chalking; either chalking to often or using too much pressure while chalking. If you chalk after every shot, with Balabushka chalk, you will create a loose chalk barrier between the leather tip and the ball causing tip skid. If there is too much chalk on the tip, you must go through that barrier before making contact with the leather tip - and that can create a miscue. The purpose of chalk is to cover the leather after scuffing the tip so chalk gets on top and underneath the leather, embedding in the leather. Since Balabushka chalk sticks better, you do not need to chalk after every shot. Most players report they have the ability to shoot three to five times before re-chalking. Even then, you only need to re-cover the areas of your tip that have lost chalk, not the entire tip. When striking the cue ball, other chalks fall off the entire tip - not with Balabushka chalk. The only part

November 2012

Let’s Talk Chalk

that loses chalk is the area of the tip that makes direct contact with the ball. Therefore, if you are re-chalking the entire tip, you are most likely over-chalking some parts of the tip and creating an inconsistency on the tip surface that could most definitely cause miscues. The correct method of applying chalk is to use a “brush stoke” using the perimeter of the chalk. Grinding the chalk into the tip is not necessary with Balabushka chalk and is discouraged because you will put too much chalk on the tip. If you blow on the tip after chalking, there should only be a small amount of dust. If there is a lot, you have over-chalked. We have had some of the best players in the country try and test the chalk: Pro, Semi-Pro, & Toprated League players. We did not get any reports of miscue problems, even for those that still are in the habit of chalking between every shot. What we got was the exact opposite. Of course the other reason for miscues is a bad stroke and the need for some players to blame a poor piece of chalk. Chalk it up to experience. I hope this helps. Thank you Robert Mallen Balabushka Cue Company-480-940-7003 1342 W. Warner Road, Ste. #105…Tempe AZ 85284 Customer concerns over miscues: Customer: I recently purchased 15 Balabushka chalks. I shoot on my own Gold Crown IV table using a Moorie medium tip that is well scuffed on a regular basis. In running balls in straight pool I find myself miss-cuing with this chalk almost every time I need to execute a hard draw or follow shot. What am I doing wrong because people claim this is the best chalk on the market? Balabushka Cue Company: That does not make sense to me. I have been playing with the chalk and testing it for 6 months and the only time I miscue has been when I went too low or high to an extreme.

Scott Frost is winning everything these days. Three more wins in October takes his winning streak to thirteen straight tournaments. Oh, and he was also named as the captain of the Phoenix Flames Bonus Ball Team. We thought that was more than enough to make Scott our Spotlight Player for November Name: Scott “The Freezer” Frost Age: 37 Occupation: Pro Pool Player Years Playing: 20 Years Rating: 10-2 Brand of Cues used: QB Custom Cues (also my sponsor) Favorite Game: One Pocket Biggest Win or Accomplishment: I beat Dippy Dave out of 700K giving him 18-4 in one pocket over a 10 day period. Biggest tournament win was the Derby City One Pocket Championship. What got you started playing pool: At our school bus stop my junior year of high school, my buddies talked me into sneaking into the pool room. A guy there hustled me out of $22 (all I had at the time). I kept sneaking into that pool room until I got back my $22... and maybe a little more. Home Room (s): Kolby’s Corner Pocket in Tempe

>Are you chalking after every shot? If so, you are putting too much chalk on the tip. With our chalk, you can shoot 3-5 times between chalking and even then you can see wear spots on the tip that only need to be filled in. if you chalk every time, you with create a thin chalk barrier between the leather and the ball. If you have to go through a chalk barrier, it will create skid and a miscue because the contact is with chalk only. I hope this makes sense. I look forward to your response. Customer: Dear Robert, You are absolutely correct! I was chalking after every shot with the Balabushka chalk, and then miscued often. Today, I chalked only before the breaks shot in 14.1 and ran frame after frame with zero miscues. Thank you for your response, and for a great product. Balabushka Cue Company: I thought that was the problem. What many players do not consider is that with better chalk, you won’t have to chalk as often and the product will last longer. I am happy it worked well for you and thank you for endorsing the product.

Arizona Billiard & Dart News

Ask Mike By Mike Bates Mike, I heard you’ve been playing darts for thirty years, besides the accomplishments in shooting, what is the best thing to come of playing this long? Wow, there are so many great things that have happened. This could be very long. Here goes, first I would say the great friendships that I have built over the thirty years. I still have great friends I grew up with, but my dart player friends are like family. You figure a couple of leagues a week and a couple of tournaments and you are with some of them four or more times a week. Then you throw in outside stuff you do with them and they are a huge part of your life. And the road trips are memories you can’t replace and I will never forget. Ve-

gas, Laughlin, Reno and others have provided many of us with great, crazy times that we will always remember. And it just doesn’t stop there, I will see on facebook lots of friends getting together for Happy Hour, Birthdays, Pool, Basketball, Barbeques or just to hang out. Many of these people would have never met had it not been for the sport we all love. It is great to see all the relationships and friendships that have developed over the years with many friends. The fact that I had something to do with many of them is a great feeling. I have had the pleasure of meeting such great people in darts that have had a direct impact on my life. I have watched many of my dart friend’s kids grow up and accomplish great things. My family has grown up around darts and the people who play darts. It is a big part of our lives. You can even

Darts and Math

extend it more as many of us AZ dart players have become friends with players all of the USA and the world. We have played against and with some of the best players in the world. With things like Facebook, you can keep tabs on who is doing what. With the new Galaxy 3 dart boards we can play friends in different states online. I just don’t see the family like closeness in any other activity. Many of my great dart player friends don’t play as much or at all anymore. They are into other things, raising families, new jobs and more. But most still keep in touch and get out from time to time and it is always great to see them. So besides any personal accomplishments I treasure the great people I have met playing darts. This is just my opinion and I may be wrong, but I doubt it.

Bullshooters Autism Fundraiser

Since the day I picked up my first dart, I knew one thing. That my math skills would give me an advantage over those that weren’t up on their numbers. This still rings true today, or does it. I haven’t played a lot of steel darts, but some of the steel dart players do not like soft tip darts. Most of them say it is because the board keeps score for you.

On October 20th, Bull Shooters was the place to be to come together for a great cause.

I understand old school players love the chalkers and many take pride in knowing how to be a good Chalker. But why would you ever have a problem with the board keeping score and making the game go smoother and quicker?

What better way to do that than through a great dart tournament with lots of raffles and prizes to be won.

I love the game and like the fact that it makes me think, and the game of freeze even takes that one step further in the thought process. But I won’t bore you with how to play freeze, you can learn for yourself, I will say it is the ultimate team game in that both players have to play well to win. So I disagree with the steel players not liking the board doing the scoring, but there are disturbing things coming our way. The medalist board was the first board to tell you what to shoot to take the game out and I hated it. Now we have a board that lights up segments that you need to hit to close and a different color if they are already closed. Give me a break! The steel players have to hate this worse, but I see many of them playing and backing this board. So many of the players that were old school in their beliefs have changed their minds. I wonder why? Maybe it is the thousands of dollars being thrown their way to play and promote this board. Most are great shooters who definitely don’t need the help in what to shoot at. Seems more like a carnival game then a competitive thing. So I guess the message isn’t “if you build it they will come”, it’s “if you throw lots of money their way, they will change.” Whats next? The board tells you what to shoot at on each shot? I can hear the robot from Lost in space saying “Mike throw the trip 15, you have hit a very high percentage of this number.”

One of our great dart players, Suzie Lawson, is doing a walk for Autism and needed to raise at least $1,000 to make it happen.

Troy Vending added a little kicker to the event by donating a full size Galaxy dart board to be raffled. The players paid $10 entry with $5 going to the tournament and $5 to the Autism Speaks cause. Thirty eight players participated in the tournament, but the real story was the 30 to 40 people who came out to support and donate cash. Drinks specials, 50/50’s and more went on as the event kept the darters busy. To make sure the event was great, Bull Shooters donated $300 to the tournament and another $100 to the raffles. Julie Bates also made brownies and Beef Jerky to help raise up the donations. When all was said and done, over $1,100.00 was raised to support Suzie’s walk. It takes special people like Suzie to bring these things to the forefront and help to make things better. I thank all the darters and friends who showed up to support. Great job to all. --Mike Bates

November 2012

A Bad Day at the Office By David “The Scorpion” Fatum So today I am sitting in Subic Bay Philippines and just finished a very disappointing Stage 8 of the WORLD Pro Soft tip tour held in Hong Kong. I am writing about how you handle such things. People ask me questions on the fustrations of darts all the time like “I practice well, but then compete at a lower level” “Why do I have a great game followed by a horrible game” or the one that applied to me this weekend “ Been playing so well, how could I perform like that?” See there are so many things that go in to a great performance. You need to prepare right, you need to have your confidence, you need to be FOCUSED and sometimes you need a little luck. All of the questions as to why

your game suffers at times comes down to the FOCUS, what thoughts are in your head when you step to the line. For myself, Stage 8 was no luck as I had a top rated shooter in the first round that surprised me but really I had no focus or control of my thoughts. Sometimes LIFE gets in the way of you getting to perform at your highest level and that was my downfall in Hong Kong. So how do you handle any of these disappointing things? Get back up there and work to gain the missing part. When you have a bad day on the line, you have to first accept it for what it was; a BAD day. It is not the edge of the cliff and now your game will be less then it was. It is just a step in the path towards your goal and bumps will happen.

I am hitting the board even more this next week to take advantage of getting to play with some of the best players in the world here in the Philippines which in turns helps be regain my focus. Like any thing in life that goes bad, there are two things for sure. One is that the world will not end on your bad day and the world will always get better then today. Champions accept the lesson a defeat gives them to use it to be a better player, chumps give you a excuse why they lost. Keep working towards your goals and stick to your plan if you want to become the player any of can be. www.davidfatum.com

What Would A Sucker Do? By Jacqueline Karol House Pro at DownLo Billiards in Chico, California You have stripes here. You are snookered and have only one ball remaining. Your smiling opponent has 5 balls left that are all makeable with no obstructions. What do you do? “Kick at the stripe!” “Send the cue ball 5 rails!” “Jump the cue ball!” “Massé!” Suckers. In this case, it is unlikely that you will even hit your object ball, let alone make it and leave yourself in a position to make the 8. Whether you make a legal shot or not, you are left in the unenviable position of taking your seat and watching your opponent run out.

proach, consider taking an intentional foul by hitting the 8-ball in order to block the corner pocket. Instead of returning to the table to run out, your opponent now has a much more difficult layout and some problem balls to contend with. Rather than watching your opponent run out, you will most likely have at least one more turn at the table. Groggys Scotch Split

November 2012

Arizona Billiard & Dart News

Rocha & DeSantiago Get Their Revenge

Andrew Rocha and Carlos DeSantiago bounced back from a hot-seat loss to get their revenge and win the Groggy’s 12 & Under Scotch Doubles event on October 13th.

Guy Martinez, Marcie Thomas, Mike Sandoval, Bernie Pappa, Amado Martinez and Curtis Neal

Seventeen teams came out to Groggys on October 6th for the October 15 and under Scotch Tournament. With over $900, in prize money every team was ready for action.

Rocha and DeSantiago made their way through the field Carlos DeSantiago & Andrew Rocha The hot seat match found Bernie Pappa and Mike Sandoval matched with Curtis of thirteen other Neal and Amado Martinez. This exciting match went hill-hill with Mike and teams and fought the team of John Wing and Chet Lahti for the hot-seat. That Bernie sending Curtis and Amado to the one loss side. match would go to Wing and Lahti by the score of 6-4. Marcie Thomas and Guy Martinez were pitted against Pete Barrio and John Wayne in the 3rd-4th match. Pete and John claimed 4th after and exciting hillhill match. Guy and Marcie moved on to meet Curtis and Amado for 2nd- 3rd. Once again Guy and Marcie won an exciting hill-hill match. For their efforts, Curtis and Amado took 3rd place and went home with $95.00.

On the one loss side, tournament director Cathy Kelly and Claudia Morado were forging a long path of matches after a first round loss. Cathy and Claudia won four matches on the left side of the board, but could not get past Andrew and Carlos in the battle for 2nd and 3rd place. Andrew and Carlos won the match with a lopsided 6-1 scoreline.

This set up a rematch for 1st and 2nd between Guy and Marcie against Bernie and Mike. Due to the lateness of the hour, each team decided to split the pot. Each team went home with $410.00.

The finals was a rematch between Rocha & DeSantiago vs Wing & Lahti. Rocha & DeSantiago kept up their great play from the previous match and ran over Wing and Lahti in the first set of the finals. Andrew & Carlos led 4-0 before John and Chet won a game and the final score was 6-1.

As always, Groggy’s staff provided a great venue, wonderful food and excellent service.

With that win, the second set of the double elimination finals got underway; and the second set looked an awful lot like the first set with Andrew & Carlos winning the match 6-2 for the tournament win. Complete Payouts: 1st Andrew Rocha & Carlos DeSantiago 2nd John Wing & Chet Lahti 3rd Cathy Kelly & Claudia Morado 4th Jaye Succo & Robin Clark
