In case you hadn’t noticed, it is HOT out there. Where better to get away from the heat than a local bar or pool room? I Want to wish all of the local players the best of luck at the BCA Nationals this month in Vegas. Local players usually do very well out there and I expect this year will be the same. Don’t miss the warm up events being held at Stinger’s this month. They are holding both singles and scotch events on the 13th and 14th. There was some talk recently on Facebook about an East vs West challenge match that would be similar to the old North vs South Cactus Cup. I will let everyone know if I hear more on this one. Could be a lot of fun. Until next time... - Mike

Arizona Billiard & Dart News Mitch Ellerman defeated John Smith in a match between arguably the two best barbox 8-ball players in the state to capture first place at the Desert Classic Tour’s June event on the 1st and 2nd at Stingers Sports Bar.

July 2013

Ellerman Unstoppable At DCT Tour Stop

As is always the case, the field in this one was a tough one. The forty player field included eight of the top ten players on tour, with only Scott Frost and Manny Chau missing. Saturday matches were tough on both sides of the board, and a number of top players would not make it to Sunday play. #2 ranked Nick Deleon dropped matches to Gary Koschnik and Jerry Stuckart on Saturday. #4 ranked Bobby Emmons also failed to reach day two after a “three and out” performance. #10 rated Mike Sandoval had an even worse day with two straight losses in his first two matches. Only eight players would earn places in Sunday’s matches, with four players undefeated and four players who already had one loss. Sunday winner’s side matches saw tour points leader Mitch Ellerman scoring an 8-5 win over John Smith and DCT tour director Dennis Orender scoring a 6-2 win over tour newcomer Jason Stanley. On the one loss side, Tres Kane eliminated Tucson’s Mike Hamman 6-4 and B player Rick Armbrust scored a 5-0 win over Brett Huth. The next round of one loss side play saw Kane fall to B player Jason Stanley 5-5 and John Smith send Armbrust to the seats with a hill-hill 6-4 win. John Smith then eliminated Stanley in 4th place with a dominating 6-0 scoreline.

Back on the winners side, Ellerman was playing Orender in an 8-6 race. Orender took a 1-0 lead and Ellerman had to come with back to back “miracle shots” to avoid a 0-2 scoreline. After Ellerman knotted the score at 1-1, he cruised to an 8-3 win and the hot-seat.

The semi-final match between John Smith and Dennis Orender saw Orender holding early 1-0 and 2-1 leads before Smith took control to win the match 6-3.

Mitch Ellerman & John Smith

The final match was a true contrast in styles as Ellerman has never found a reason to use more than one practice stroke, and Smith brings a very methodical approach to the table and won’t pull the trigger until he knows exactly what he wants every ball to do. On this day, it was Ellerman’s rapid fire game that controlled things. Ellerman won the first three racks and never trailed in the match. Smith got back within two racks twice, but a 5-3 Ellerman lead quickly became an 8-3 Ellerman win. The Desert Classic Tour will be at Skip & Jan’s on August 17th and 18th for their next event - a barbox 10-ball event.

Alvarez Undefeated At Knobbys

Bruce Hirose and Frank Alvarez Jr

Frank Alvarez Jr. beat Bruce Hirose twice in an undefeated run through a field of fifteen players to win the Knobby’s 9 & Under 8-ball event on June 7th. The final two matches on the winners side saw Alvarez beat Ed Scott and Bruce beat Vito Leto. That left Frank and Bruce as the final undefeated players, and Frank would score a 2-1 victory, sending Bruce to the left side of the board. On the one loss side, Mike Howerton was on a winning streak beating Pat Schulz, Joe Nicita, Ed Scott and Gary Bloom to set up the match with Bruce in the semi-finals. Howerton’s streak would come to a screeching halt with Hirose scoring the 2-0 victory. The finals saw Alvarez take a quick 1-0 lead, but Hirose would break and run the second rack to tie things at 1-1. The case game would be rather anti-climactic as Hirose ran down to a tough 8-ball and scratched, giving the match and tournament win to Alvarez. The Arizona Women’s Billiard Tour held their June event at Skip & Jan’s Sports Bar in Tempe, Az on June 8th - 9th - and Jaye Succo showed the field of twenty players why matches aren’t decided on paper.

Jaye Succo Wins Her First AWBT Event

The field included the usual selection of top talent from Arizona, Las Vegas, New Mexico and Wisconsin; with top seeds that included Bernie Store, Susan Williams, Sara Miller and Vegas’ Stacy Allsup. Bernie Store looked like the player to beat early on this weekend as she scored day one wins over Tracie Hamman, Susan Wilbur and Sara Miller. On the opposite side of the board, Jaye Succo had day one wins over Lynor Johnson, Beth Orth and Amanda Pulley to remain undefeated going into Sunday play.

against Jaye for the hot-seat.

On paper, the hot-seat match should have been a no-brainer. Bernie hasn’t finished lower than 2nd place all season and this would be Succo’s first time playing for an AWBT hot-seat. The race to seven match saw Bernie making her way to the hill first with a 6-3 lead. Neither player looked to be enjoying fighting with the tough pockets at Skip & Jan’s, and Bernie appeared to tighten up a little when she got to the hill. Jaye showed that she was more than capable of taking advantage of Bernie’s uncharacteristic careful play as she won the next four games to take the hot-seat 7-6.

Final eight players (minus Susan Wilbur)

On the one loss side, Bernie looked like the player we are all used to watching as she broke open a close 2-2 match to quickly dispatch Sara Miller 7-3 and earn the chance to redeem herself against Succo in the finals.

ability today”, he said. “I have watched her playing Sunday night league against some of the top players in Phoenix and she has learned a lot over these last few months” he commented. Succo definitely looked at the tournament as an accomplishment. After the event, she said “I’m ready for any challenge thrown my way. I knew I had to work my way up, as far as the standings and actually winning a stop, but I didn’t think it would happen this fast - especially against someone who shoots as well as Bernie.”

Sara Miller would then end Orth’s day with a 7-1 scoreline, and Wilbur kept her tournament hopes alive with a 7-2 win over Amanda Pulley.

The final match was a race to nine and it would go all the way to the 17th game to determine a final winner. A 2-0 Store lead was tied up at 2-2. Bernie would then surge ahead 5-2, but Jaye clawed back to 5-4. It was then that Bernie took control of the match and raced to the hill at 8-5. Jaye would need to win four games before Bernie won one more. Jaye took the next rack, and then the next. Before the fans knew what had happened, Succo had erased another three rack deficit and tied the match at 8-8. The final game would be decided quickly when Store hung the 9-ball in the corner pocket and left an unmissable 1-9 combo. Succo did not miss the combo as she celebrated her first AWBT tour victory.

The final four players would then be in action with Sara Miller snuffing out Susan Wilbur’s tournament hopes 7-3, while Bernie faced off

While fans who were not in attendance might have been surprised by these results, tour director Tres Kane showed no surprise at all. “Jaye is playing up to her

Two favorites that didn’t escape day one were Susan Williams and Stacy Allsup. After a first round bye, Williams dropped a hill-hill decision to Susan Wilbur and was eliminated two matches later by Tracie Hamman. Allsup’s day was even worse with a “two and out” performance. Play got underway on Sunday with Bernie & Jaye being joined by six players on the one loss side. That number would be cut to four players on the one loss side with Orth defeating Hamman 7-6 and Wilbur defeating Justine Bishop 7-4.

Arizona Ladies At Ultimate 10-Ball The ladies of the AWBT made their presence known at the recent Ultimate 10-Ball Championship in Tunica Mississippi. Susan Williams, Angel Paglia and Sara Miller all competed in the event. Angel Paglia finished in 13th place with wins over Cathy Metzinger, Kia Sidbury, Eric McManus and Kim White-Newsome. Sara Miller finished in 33rd place with a win over Sandra Badger. Susan Williams finished in 33rd place with a win over Belinda Lee. Congratulations to all three ladies.

On June 30th, 2013, the Arizona Rating Committee came together for their quarterly meeting at Stinger’s Sports Bar in Glendale Arizona. On the docket were a few topics of discussion in addition to the normal new additions and player adjustments. It was voted that a partial ratings list containing 6 and under rated players will be supplied to BCA for eligibility verification into the Southwest Regional 6 and under event. The committee would like to thank Joe Nicita for bringing on Bailey’s Pub as a new room. In addition to Joe being added as a new member, two new player Reps were also added. Welcome to Chad Barber and Ben Sutherland. There was some discussion around instituting an 8 minus 1 and 9 minus 1 rating similar to the current 10 minus 1 & 2 ratings…concept is that the top “x” number of 8’s and 9’s would move up to their respective minus 1 ratings…for example, an 8 minus 1 could still play in an 8 and under event, but their opponent would race to one less game than their rating dictated…we agreed to think this over and discuss before possible action on it at next meeting. There were many new players added to the overall list. Below you will find the adjustments!

APA National Team Championships

The APA National Team Championships are set, at least as far as APA Phoenix Metro is concerned. Over the past month and a half we have been qualifying our teams that will be competing in Las Vegas this August said Gina Nowlin, the League Operator here in Maricopa County. We will be sending three 8 Ball teams, two 9 Ball teams, two 8 Ball Doubles, Two 9 Ball Doubles and 2 Masters Teams she said. The teams that represent Phoenix in Vegas will have their entries paid, rooms comped, and a little spending money to take with them. The 5 person teams all receive $1100 Cash and the doubles teams received approximately $200 in cash. The 5 player teams are the highlight of the National event with over 1400 teams competing last year. APA National Team Championships is the largest pool tournament in the world and is in the Guinness book of world records as such.

APA is the only league in the world that allows absolute beginners in the sport of billiards to compete in such a large tournament with a chance to win so much money. Over $1.6 Million is up for grabs in the APA National events, and every team that competes must have a range of skilled players from beginner to a highly skilled player. Teams consist of 8 players on a roster with 5 playing in each match. Each individual match is handicapped to give the lower ranked players a chance to win. It makes for some very interesting matchups Gina told us. Win a 3 rated player is matched up against a 7 rated player they only have to win 2 games to their opponent’s 6 games.

Sheenan Leale and Paul Hidea

We want to wish all the players competing in Vegas next month all the luck in the world.

Negrin & Luta Win Groggys Scotch Event

Mike Chapa & Robin Clark

June 8th was the date for River City Pockets 6 & under Singles Tournament and a field of twenty one strong players came out to compete for over $500.00 in prize money. Martinez Wins One Pocket Madness

Balabushka Cue Company Introduces New “Blonde” Performance Billiard Chalk

PHOENIX, AZ, JUNE 26, 2013: In their timehonored tradition of excellence, Balabushka Cue Company is pleased to present the “NEW” Balabushka Blonde chalk that promises to deliver just like Balabushka Blue. The new color was designed specifically for “ALL” lighter colored felts and cloths and was tested against the most commonly used lighter-colored chalk (Tan) and found the “NEW” Balabushka Blonde to be one to three shades lighter on many popular colors such as: Camel, Gold, Taupe, Khaki, Espresso, Mocha, Brown, Olive, & Grey. It also blended better than Balabushka Blue on darker colors such as Red, Burgundy and Wine. In addition, the new Blonde color keeps ferrules and shaft wood looking and feeling cleaner.

Sammy Martinez

Sammy Martinez went through a tough field of one pocket players to capture the Bullshooters One Pocket Madness event on June 15th. By the time Martinez sat in the hot-seat, he had already scored wins over Tres Kane, Bobby Emmons, Bernie Pettipiece and Pete Lhotka. After the loss to Martinez, Bobby Emmons made his way through the one loss side to earn his rematch in the finals, but in the end it was Martinez scoring a 3-2 win for first place and $250 in prize money. This chalk was tested against other standard chalk brand colors, and it was discover that it doesn’t have to match because cleanliness is colorblind. Now you can play with chalk that is five to six times cleaner than other brands on any color felt or cloth with Balabushka Blue or Blonde, Performance Chalk. Now the choice is simple! Just like the blue color that was introduced a year ago, this chalk adheres to your cue tip, making frequent chalking a thing-of-the-past. It grips the cue ball, allowing for superior ball control. Also, Balabushka Performance Chalk produces very little dust residue, keeping the table, balls and your hands cleaner throughout your entire match. Distribution has launched to billiard retailers throughout the United States and Internationally. In the spirit of George Balabushka, and his philosophy on excellence, the Balabushka Cue Company, LLC, located in Tempe, Arizona, promises to maintain that same level of excellence on every item produced under his trademarked name.

Avila & Lee Split At Stingers

July 2013

Tenadore Lee might have lost his first match of the day, but he would earn his revenge on his way to a share of first place at the Stinger’s 7’s & Under 8-ball event on June 29th.

Lee was just part Tenadore Lee & Joe Avila of Jimmy Brewer’s winning streak on his way to the hot-seat match. Brewer also scored wins over Ray Shaban, Robin Clark and John Waldecker. The other half of the winners side saw Joe Avila beat Felipe Salazar, Mike Chapa and Todd Dilley. Avila kept his streak alive and took the hot-seat with a 4-2 win over Brewer. On the one loss side, Ten was not willing to give up his hopes for a tournament win. He won six straight matches, including a hill-hill comeback against Dilley and then a 4-0 win over Waldecker to earn a shot at revenge against Brewer. Ten would get that revenge with a 4-1 win over Brewer. How Did They Hit It?

Mitch Ellerman - Desert Classic Tour June 2nd - Stingers Sports Bar

Sometimes while out covering a tournament, a shot (or two) will come up that are deserving of a little more than a reserved clap from the stands. As those shots happen, I am going to try to present them to you readers for your enjoyment. This month we have to back to back shots from Mitch Ellerman at the Desert Classic Tour event at Stingers. In the match for the hot-seat, Mitch already trailed Dennis Orender 1-0 and was giving up two on the wire in a race to 10. A loss in this game would have left Ellerman in a four game hole and Orender with a boatload of confidence. Diagram one is the position Mitch was in after Dennis played safe. Mitch has the stripes. Mitch explains the next two shots like this... “He played safe making my 14-ball and I have the cue ball on the bottom rail next to the corner pocket. I look at kicking my ball into the side pocket as my only shot, coming down two rails going side rail - head rail and coming down between two balls on the opposite side to get shape on the 8 to go by his ball into the corner pocket - the only pocket I see.” Mitch made his ball, but things didn’t go as he planned in Diagram 2.

“I get a bad bump coming back down table and hit the point of the side pocket to go back up table near the head string. Now I am stuck with a tough shot. I can’t really play safe because of the type of player Dennis is. He has an open table and is going to run out on me from anywhere that I leave him. I studied the shot about two minutes and came to the conclusion to shoot the 8-ball backwards, off of the 5-ball. I have to play it with no english and just draw so that the cue ball misses the double kiss after the 8-ball banks to the opposite side pocket.” Diagram 3 shows the shot on the 8-ball. “I didn’t like the carom in the corner because there were too many variables involved with other balls. I thought the carom - bank into the side had the least number of variables. This sort of carom comes up in one pocket and that is where I got the idea. I hit it with a medium stroke, not hard, so that the 8-ball would transition off of the 5-ball cleanly and go into it’s natural angle coming away from the carom. No english made sure to not throw the ball off. I just used angles and killed it with draw to keep the cue ball out of the way of the double kiss. “ Mitch finished up the description of the shot with “That shot was a huge momentum swing for my confidence. I think after that, I broke and ran four and won the match 10-3. “

Groggys Scotch Split

Arizona Billiard & Dart News

Chet Lahti & Dale Menghe returned to share the winners circle with John Marquis & Teri Curtis at Groggy’s 12 & Under Scotch Doubles event on June 8th. John & Teri took the hot-seat with a close 6-4 win over Chet & Dale, sending Chet & Dale to the one loss side to face Joe Roe & Quinn Hale. Joe & Quinn had lost their first match of the event, but had already won four in a row on the left side of the board.

The semi-final match was a 6-4 race and Chet & Dale quickly ran out to a 4-1 lead before Joe & Quinn won two in a row to get to the hill at 4-3. One rack later, both teams were on the hill with Chet & Dale breaking for the set. It looked like things would be over quick in the last game when Dale made the 9-ball on the break, but the tournament rules were that 9-balls don’t count in the bottom two pockets on the break - so the 9-ball was spotted and Chet & Dale would shoot from there. Unfortunately for Joe & Quinn, the spotted 9-ball was only a temporary reprieve as Chet & Dale ran the rack for the 6-3 win. The finals got underway with a rematch between Chet & Dale and John & Teri. After Chet & Dale scored a 6-4 win in the first set of the true double elimination finals, the teams decided to split first and second place. A note from Mike Sexton... By all accounts it was a success. We paid out more than the $10,000 dollars advertised. The tournament ran smoothly and without incident. I’m sure we’ll do it again next year and it will be bigger and better. Thank you, to all those who attended and thank you to all those who helped in any way. Thank you to the Bullshooters staff for serving us so well during this event. Special thanks to Julie Bates, Jaime Bates and Brooke Bates for being there early in the morning to support our group and make us breakfast Julie!. We all appreciate it. Special thanks to Derek Simmons and Daryl Chester, for helping me run things, and to all those who stayed late on Sunday, to help breakdown and put away the dart standards. Daryl also donated over $100 dollars in craft beer for our raffle to help raise monies for the tournament. The biggest “Thank You” goes to Mike Bates who continues to support steel darts in Arizona. Without him this tournament would not have happened. Thank you Mike for all you do to support darts. All of us who love darts appreciate everything you do to support us (both steel and soft tip). Thanks again, Mike Sexton

5030 Lounge Room Profile

The 5030 lounge / bar re-opened it’s doors under new owners in February of this year. The new owners, Dave and Lori Delos, are no strangers to the Arizona bar scene as 5030 is their 5th local bar.

The bartender Britney was very friendly and very attentive with the customers, definitely giving everyone the feeling that they are welcome. The place is really laid back, clean and just gives you a friendly feeling. 5030 has 2 pool tables, 2 dart boards (one of them being a new remote dart board) 6 flat screen TVs, ATM machine inside and a Touch Tunes which is a music player with an online photo booth which I thought was really cool. 5030 hosts pool tournament son Tue, Wed and Thursday with dart leagues on Tuesday and Thursday nights. They also have free pool for the ones that don’t play in tournaments or just want to get a few practice games or just for fun. Free pool is on Monday nights from 8:30 to close and Fridays from 10:00 AM to 6:30 PM. Birthdays are always special at 5030, where they keep the Delos tradition of monthly birthday parties going with a party on the first Friday of the momth. Every patron whose birthday is that month enjoys .25 cent drinks at the party. So when you just need a new place to kick back, relax and feel comfortable, then this would be the place. Stop in and check it out at 5030 W. Peoria in Glendale.

Stinger’s Tops Bar Wars Leg 2

Bar Wars - Arizona’s quarterly dart challenge series - made it’s way to Skip & Jan’s on June 1st with three rooms looking to give the trophy a new home for the next three months.

Leg one of the event saw Cheers in Glendale host the event and score the win to earn the right to display the trophy in their room for the first three months of this event. Teams from Stingers, Toso’s and Skip & Jan’s had all had three months to get their games ready with the goal of taking the trophy back to their room. While the team from Cheers would make a valiant effort, they would fall short in the end to the team from Stingers’s in Glendale. The deciding factor in this one looked to be a dominating win by the girls team from Stingers. The trophy will now be on display at Stinger’s until the next leg of this event on September 8th at Toso’s. Leg 2 Final Standings... 1st Stingers 2nd Cheers 3rd Toso’s 4th Skip & Jan’s

TEAMWORK By Roger Long

Certified Instructor I’ve been watching WPBL Bonus Ball matches via livestreams lately and it’s pleasantly surprising to see teams that might have been considered underdogs actually doing better than teams that have been stacked with today’s heaviest hitters. Most surprising of all is the Phoenix Fire. With Scott Frost and Tommy Kennedy being polar opposites in personality, and Peruvian Manual Chau having an accent that can make communications difficult at times – and with none of these three players ever being crowned “World Champion” – the Fire was written off as a contender in most people’s minds before the league ever started. That has all changed now, and the thing that changed it can be attributed to the teamwork that these three players display on the competition table.

Bonus Ball is a game that incorporates aspects of several different games. It’s a little like Snooker, a little like Eight-Ball, a little like 14.1, and quite a bit like One-Pocket. And it’s that One-Pocket similarity that gives the Phoenix Fire its advantage over some of the other teams because Scott Frost is a master at One-Pocket. That’s not to say that there are no excellent One-Pocket players on the other teams, because there are. But what Scott has is the gift of being able to survey any table layout and immediately recognize the best shot to take amongst a myriad of possibilities. And as captain of the team, Frost is allowed to inform his other two players (Kennedy and Chau) of which ball to shoot and where to leave the cue ball ay any time. He doesn’t even have to call a timeout; all he has to do is verbalize and point from the sidelines. And with Bonus Ball’s 24-second shot clock, and 15-minute game clock always ticking away precious time, teamwork like the Fire’s is proving to be a game changer.

Another way that the Phoenix Fire demonstrates good teamwork is by holding frequent team practices, which is important to working on strategies and timing. Kennedy and Chau being able to set aside their own egos and defer to Frost’s judgment, has also been a key in putting together a winning team. The end result is that they operate like a well-oiled machine. I know it won’t take long for other teams in the WPBL to try and copy what the Phoenix Fire is doing, but there might be a few that just won’t be able to get it done with their present rosters. That’s because some players’ individualistic natures may never allow them to compete in a team environment. If so, those players will eventually find themselves on the outside looking in. The example being set by Bonus Ball‘s Phoenix Fire is something that all amateur league teams can learn something from, as well. Practice together. Strategize together. Defer to teammates who have more knowledge and

PAGE 23

experience. Simply put, use good teamwork.

Carpenter & Lervold Win Big at 480

July 2013

Lacey Wins 480 9’s & Under

Bill, Chris, Nick, Eric, Eric and Maurice

Chris Carpenter & Eric Lervold teamed up to win almost all of the prize money in play at Max & Ted’s 480’s June Scotch Doubles event on 1st. The hot-seat match was contested by Eric Lacey & Nick Cipiti vs Bill Van Der Weyst & Maurice Totress. That match would end with a lopsided 7-2 score in Eric & Nick’s favor. On the one loss side, Carpenter & Lervold were on a roll after suffering a 7-4 loss to Lacey & Cipiti earlier in the day. Carpenter & Lervold kept their run going with a 7-4 win over Bill & Maurice. The first set of the true double elimination finals saw Carpenter & Lervold score a 7-6 win over Lacey & Cipiti to force a second set. That was when things got interesting. Instead of the typical “we each won one set, lets split from here” conversation, the two teams got together and decided to play the final set for both first and second place prize money. To Lacey & Cipiti’s dismay, Carpenter & Lervold scored a 7-3 win to claim first and second place. Complete Payouts: 1st Chris Carpenter & Eric Lervold 2nd Eric Lacey & Nick Cipiti 3rd Bill Van Der Weyst & Maurice Totress

Jim Eberle, BBQ and Eric Lacey

Max & Ted’s new monthly 9’s & Under event on June 22nd was a big success, especially for Eric Lacey, who won the event. Lacey and BBQ emerged from a field of twenty six players as the final two undefeated players facing off for the hot-seat. That match went to Lacey 5-4. On the one loss side, Jim Eberle was knocking players out of the tournament with hopes of avenging an earlier loss to Lacey. BBQ would be the next player to fall to Eberle 4-3 to set up the Lacey/Eberle rematch in the finals. Eberle had been playing stronger as the night went on, but Lacey was unstoppable on this day and he ran away with a lopsided 5-1 win for first place. Farias Wins Kittys 7’s & Under

Joseph Farias went through the field undefeated at Kitty’s on June 15th to win the June 7’s & Under event. Farias took the hot-seat with a 7-4 win over Maddie Alvarado, and got comfortable waiting for his final opponent. That opponent would be a red-hot Manuel Pinon. Pinon has lost his first match of the tournament, but ran through the one loss side for his spot in the finals. Before the finals, Pinon eliminated Ebony Kelly in 4th place and then Alvarado in third place 6-2. Unfortunately for Pinon, his winning streak would come to an end against Farias 7-4 in the first set of the finals. Even in defeat, Pinon could take solace in knowing that he earned as much with side pots as Farias did with no side pots. In a unique turn of events, 5th place finisher Pete Williams earned more in side pot prize money than 3rd place Alvarado did in tournament prize money. Neal & Winkler Undefeated At Kittys

Arizona Billiard & Dart News

Kittys Scotch Split

Pete Williams, Cliff Seaton, Steve Henderson & Ryan Daw

Pete Williams & Cliff Seaton made their way through a field of twenty one teams to take the hot-seat at Kitty’s 15 & Under Scotch Doubles tournament on June 29th, but sometimes the hot-seat is not where you want to be.

John Neal and Dennis Winkler

Kitty’s 12 & under Scotch Doubles Tournament on June 22nd drew a field of eleven teams competing for over $600.00 in prize money. The hot seat match found Robin Clark and Chuck Bobbitt matched against John Neal and Dennis Winkler. John and Dennis won this match 7-3, sending Robin and Chuck to the one loss side. Chuck and Robin then faced Leo Satterwhite and Ebony Kelly for 2nd and 3rd. Chuck and Robin won that 7-4 to earn a rematch with John and Dennis in the finals. For their efforts, Leo and Ebony garnered 3rd place and $50.00. The rematch between Chuck and Robin against Dennis and John was set, but again John and Dennis won the match 7-3. For their efforts, Chuck and Robin took 2nd and $175.00. Dennis and John took 1st and received $370.00. Kitty and her staff provided a great venue and outstanding service. I hope to see everyone there next month.

After taking the hot-seat with a 5-4 win over Pete Barrios & Dale Menghe, Williams & Seaton got ready for a long wait before the final match. And the wait was definitely long. On the one loss side, Steve Henderson & Ryan Daw were taking the long way to the finals after a first round loss. Henderson & Daw would not lose again, as they won seven straight matches to earn a shot at Williams & Seaton well past 2am in the morning. Instead of the old reliable split, the teams played out the first set and Henderson & Daw scored an 8-3 win to force a second set. With the clock inching towards 3:30 in the morning, the two teams settled for the split instead of playing the second set. Complete Payouts: 1st Pete Williams & Cliff Seaton 1st Steve Henderson & Ryan Daw 3rd Pete Barrios & Dale Menghe 4th Chuck Bobbitt & Ricky Jones

Tommy Kennedy Returns to Phoenix

July 2013

Pro player, Tommy Kennedy, has returned to the Phoenix area for a planned five-month stay while he plays Bonus Ball for the Phoenix Fire in the inaugural season of the World Professional Billiard League (WPBL).

Arizona Billiard & Dart News

Phoenix Fire Lead WPBL Rankings

With a 4-1 record, and all three starters in the top 10, the Phoenix Fire are the top team in the World Professional Billiard League’s first season.

Although all WPBL matches are held Tommy Kennedy and Mike Bates at a recently completed league studio in Las Vegas, Kennedy has elected to reside with friends in Glendale and commute to and from his scheduled matches in Vegas. Kennedy was in the Phoenix area for three weeks in December 2012 in readiness of the originally announced start date for the new pro league, but then construction problems on the studio forced the WPBL to postpone start-up until all the bugs could be worked out. The actual start-up eventually became May 30. The principle sponsor for the Phoenix Fire team (Scott Frost, Manny Chau, and Tommy) is Bull Shooters Billiards & Sports Bar, owned by Mike Bates. When not playing in Vegas, Kennedy plans to spend much of his spare time at Bull Shooters where he will help to promote Mike’s business as well as promote pool in general. Some of the promotional activities in Kennedy’s plans include: private instruction, group workshops, Bonus Ball lessons, and competing in Bull Shooters’ tournaments and on one of its league teams. Whether you’ve been playing pool all your life, or just started playing yesterday, you owe it to yourself to head on down to Bull Shooters and meet that little dynamo named, Tommy Kennedy. It won’t take more than a moment for you to see why he is one of the most popular (and best) pool players in the world.

The Fire did not get out to the best of starts - losing to the Minnesota Outlaws 10-7 in their first match on June 1st. That would be the only loss that the Fire would suffer in June though, as they went on to score dominating wins the rest of the month of June. A 12-4 win over Las Vegas on June 8th was followed by a 14-2 win over Pittsburgh the following day. The Fire were just as strong a week later with a 14-3 win over Miami and a 12-5 win in the rematch with Pittsburgh on June 15th. Tommy Kennedy is ranked second in the league and when asked what he attributed the teams great start to, his first thought was the team captain Scott Frost. “I think Scott has done a lot for the team. He is a great coach. He has shown me a lot of one pocket shots that come up in Bonus Ball. Manny has really played incredible too. He always seems to make the key shot when we need him to. I am just listening to Scott a lot and trying to play my game. We are playing together as a team instead of as individuals and I think it shows in the standings.” commented Kennedy. Frost had a different viewpoint on the team’s success though. “The credit is spread out equally to the team. We communicate so well and the chemistry is second to none. “ commented Frost. The Phoenix Fire will be in action July 5th, 6th, 26th and 27th. All matches can be viewed online at www.wpbltv.com

What Would A Sucker Do? By Jacqueline Karol House Pro at Oasis Billiards, Bar & Grill in Chico, California You are playing 9-ball and your opponent just played a safe on you. Now it is your shot. What do you do? Idea #1: “Kick at the 1-ball and try making it in the side pocket!” Idea #2: “Kick the 1-ball into the 9-ball!”

Answer: Take an intentional foul and pocket the 9-ball. The 9-ball will now be spotted and your opponent will have ball-in-hand. Now it is very likely that you will get another shot at the table instead of watching your opponent have an easy shot to win the game.

Suckers… Why aren’t these the best ideas? Idea #1: It is extremely unlikely that you will be able to kick the 1-ball in the side pocket. And even if you do it is also unlikely that you will get shape on the 2-ball. Idea #2: This is also very unlikely that you will be able to hit your 1-ball AND also be able to make the 9-ball. Even if you did hit the 1-ball, it is likely that you sell out and leave your opponent an easy 1-9 combo or carom.
