Fanconi Test Update: There have been some technical problems with the new Fanconi Syndrome Test for basenjis. The reasons for these problems are under investigation and the testing has been temporarily suspended until these problems are understood and solved. Up-coming Dates: Plan ahead. The Fun Day will be March 25 at the Apache Junction Rodeo Grounds. The April meeting will be April 15 at the home of Carmella Troisi-Hoerr. The May meeting will be on May 20 at the home of Sam Preedasuth. Basenji Specialty and Sweepstakes—Nov. 4. Ron and Nancy Wilson sent a link to a program that is supposed to donate money to various causes. Go to truckvaultcares.com presented by Scott Linden’s Wingshooting USA. If you click on one of the organizations it is supposed to receive donations. One of the organizations is Canine Health Foundation. Sorry to Say: Debbie TenBruin’s red and white girl, Zuri, crossed over the Rainbow Bridge. She had been fighting Valley Fever. Donna Smith will be moving to her son’s home in Seminole, OK, due to the death of her husband.
Mary DeWhitt would like a new home for Bella—preferably with children. She had a disagreement with the old male and has returned to Mary. She played with the girls in the family and let them take her for walks wearing a tutu. Happy to Say: Congratulations to Susan Howard. There are five new puppies at her house—red and brindle. 3 girls and 2 boys Singer, owned by Arnieta Kurtz, finished his UKC championship with a Best in Show and a Reserve Best in Show win. Dandy, who is staying with Mary DeWhitt temporarily, finished his UKC title handily after 4 shows and 4 Best of Breed and two Group 1 wins. His brother Gabe was Best of Breed at the Oregon Specialty recently. They are both owned by Jennie Behles & sired by Flo Havens’ boy, Hum.

The next event for the club will be the Fun day on March 25. Join us at the Apache Junction Rodeo Grounds. The fun is planned to start at 8:00 A.M., but we will be setting up earlier for anyone who wants to help. Bring your dogs— basenji or otherwise—and plan to join in or just sit & watch & visit. We will have practice lure coursing runs, the famous Easter Egg hunt (for the dogs), the Easter Bonnet Parade (for the dogs—humans can join in), lunch, a short meeting, raffle items, and time to visit with other dog lovers. We will again show THE DOG LISTENER, a program from AKC about how to be safe around dogs in various situations. Only about five minutes, but worth viewing. We will have sandwich fixings at lunch time. Please bring something to share—soft drinks, water, chips, salads, dessert, etc. Directions: Take the superstition Freeway (#60) to the Tomahawk exit Go North on Tomahawk straight to the Rodeo Grounds Go straight across E. Lost Dutchman Rd. to enter and park 1590 E. Lost Dutchman Rd. Specialty: Plans are progressing for the next specialty on November 4. BCOA has given us approval for the date. We will again be at Prospector Park in Apache Junction. Jane Gentzen will judge the regular classes and Carmella Troisi-Hoerr will judge sweepstakes—pending AKC approval. We will again have a great lunch, terrific prizes, rosettes, and a fabulous raffle. 2011 Titles: If your dog earned any title—conformation or performance—in 2011 you are eligible for an award at the Awards Party in June. Send your information to the secretary, 201 South 90th Place, Mesa, 85208. You will need the dog’s name, title earned, and whether you are the breeder or owner. Fun Day 2011
Brags: Dolly and Copper, owned by Arnieta Kurtz, both earned their UKC championships. Flo Havens reports that Ch. Ahmahr Nahr’s You’re The One (bred by Flo & Jennie Behles) won three group 1s and a group 2 at UKC shows, to finish his championship. He was already an AKC champion. He was shown by Mary DeWhitt. His brother (Ch. Ahmahr Nahr’s Lost Angel Gabriel) went Best in Show at the all-breed AKC show at Midland, TX. He had already gone BOB at the Oregon Specialty. Their sister, GrCh. Ahmahr Nahr’s Hallehujah Makes A Joyful Noise (Halle) got three Group 1s and a Group 4 for the weekend and then went Reserve Best In Show at Ontario Breeders in Toronto.

Proceed 1.75 miles North (5th traffic light) Turn left (West) onto Clubhouse Dr. & proceed to guardhouse (left lane). Tell the guard you are going to Ed & Michelle’s address. Follow Clubhouse Dr. for 2 miles to Coronado Dr. & turn left. Go to W. Almeria and turn right. Follow it around to 16537. Lunch will be cooked on the grill—hot dogs, etc. Drinks provided. Bring something to share—chips, appetizers, salads, desserts. Get ready to congratulate our award winners. This will be our last meeting till September. May Meeting: AKC has approved our specialty and judges for November 4 at Prospector Park. June is AKC’s microchipping month. Remember we now have the ISO chips available for $20, which includes the lifetime registration. AKC is concerned that the proposed change to The Animal Welfare Act will have an impact on AKC breeders. You can view the proposed changes on AKC’s website under AKC Government Relations. Dr. Jean Dodds, DVM will hold a one day Canine Health Seminar in Phoenix on August 25. It will address changing vaccine protocols, immune system and disease resistance, thyroiditis ,issues in nutrition—including homemade & raw diets. She will answer questions throughout the day. $85 includes seminar, light breakfast, lunch & snack. Registration deadline—July 30. For particulars contact Caliente All Breed Canine Association or Arnieta. Condolences—Ed Jarrett passed away in April. He is survived by his wife, Barbara. Brags—Flo Havens reports that two of Hum’s (Ch. Illusion Tex Son, JC) children continue to do well in the show ring. Halle got three group 1’s in Saskatoon, Canada, and Gabe got two group placements in Salt Lake City and another group two in Albuquerque. Both were co-bred by Flo and Jennie Behles.

The next meeting will be held on September 16, after basenji judging at the Prescott show, held at Old Home Manor, 2100 Perkinsville Rd., in Chino Valley, AZ. You can check Onofrio’s website in the coming week for the time. It’s a nice drive with great scenery, and it should be cooler than Phoenix. Specialty: The premium list for the specialty, with all particulars, will be on the website. If you are entering you can download the forms there, or you can request a printed copy. Flo Havens is the show secretary. If you are not entering you can come out to Apache Junction and just enjoy a day of basenjis and friendly people who love them. We will have breakfast items in the morning and a great lunch for a $5 donation. Terrific prizes if you are entering and fabulous raffle items for everyone. This show is dedicated to Donna Smith, and the trophies were donated by her. So, save November 4! Elections: Coming in November! The nominating committee will report at the September meeting. Nominations will be taken from the floor at the October meeting. 2013 Calendars: Last call for 2013 calendars—basenjis and most other breeds, as well as other animals, flowers, artists, cars, etc. Only $10, normally $15 in stores. We will be helping the White Mountain Club in Show Low on September 29 with their lure coursing match. It will be held after Best in Show. If you are entering the show any help with the match would be welcome. Condolences: We are sorry to report the death of Bev Bland’s younger sister, Jo, from cancer. A card was sent from the club.

Brags: Flo Havens reports that Angel received two of the three needed majors for her Grand Championship at the Prescott shows this fall. Sarah Lee is trying to decide if she accepts the new man in her life.
