The

DEREK WALCOTT CENTRE FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS

The poem ‘Simply Passing Through’ by Derek Walcott was instrumental to the design concept. The aim was to ‘capture the essence of time and space’. Since the main spaces (museum and theatre) were internal, the façade was designed to act as a ‘skin’ that limited the number of solid walls. The addition of the ramp allowed generous amounts of light and most importantly views to the city; one of the site’s main benefits, as one proceeded into the dimly lit theatre space.

CHURCH HALL – Pedro River, St. Ann, Jamaica The client requested that a Church Hall be designed for an existing Methodist Church on the same property. I chose to maximize on the use of day-lighting and create an open floor plan that could be used for various purposes.

INTERPRETATION – Housing Solution Denham town is a residential area located in West Central Kingston, Jamaica. The design called for a central area that everyone had to pass to get to their units (Square). It required a space with reduced density and more ‘green spaces’. Three levels of gathering were created starting with a viewing deck, then a green area and culminating with a much larger paved surface ideally for group activities.

JACKSONVILLE MUSEUM OF FASHION - Jacksonville, Fl

The Jacksonville Museum of Fashion is the only one of its kind in the area. It seeks to provide a journey through fashion over the years and takes on an ‘old meets new approach’ similar to that of the town of Jacksonville with its interesting combination of high rise modern buildings and historic buildings which are reminiscent of Savannah. The landscape sweeps up to fifteen feet above ground level and descends into a series of linear outdoor gathering and recreational spaces of varied sizes for the public to utilize.
