UCF 2018 FOOTBALL PREVIEW

The 5 Keys to UCF Maintaining (and Building Even More) Success in 2019
Last season ended on two really sour notes, but there’s no time to mope. Not when everyone else wants UCF to fail. When it comes to the incredible success UCF football has earned and celebrated over the last two seasons, there are a few things that still shock me: First and foremost, that this has all even happened in the first place. Who would have ever expected UCF would not only be the new Boise State, but become the poster child of a college football revolution that some programs and athletic directors are too stupid to appreciate? Secondly, that UCF’s campaign for respect and rightful claim to a piece of the 2017 National Championship (Colley Matrix 4 Life) would piss Alabama fans and the obnoxiously arrogant sheep of the SEC off so much that they’re still, right now as I type this, making the same boring, pathetic jokes on Twitter and Facebook about UCF claiming various championships. And thirdly, it would even filter out some hilariously pathetic UCF “fans” who are somehow embarrassed by Danny White, the BEST athletic director in the nation, sticking up for the Group of Five by insisting they have a little self-respect and stop letting Power 5 programs call all the shots. To all of them, I say with pride in my voice and a monocle over my eye: NATIONAL CHAMPS, BABY. But we cannot waste anymore time looking back on the past two seasons. Even with that unfortunate loss to LSU and the winning streak dead, the haters are out there telling their bad UCF jokes and waiting for the Knights to drop back to mediocre or, even worse, just plain average. The good news is that I don’t see that happening, at least not this season. Having correctly predicted undefeated regular seasons for the past two years, I feel very confident with this season’s prediction: 13-0, all the way through the AAC Championship. That’s 14-0 if you count whichever bowl game UCF will dominate as well. This doesn’t happen, though, without the right pieces falling into place, and so I offer these five keys to UCF winning again and pissing off the haters more than ever. 1) Dominate the little guys. On one hand, I have a ton of respect for FAU showing love last season to UCF as the reigning National Champs, and that shouldn’t have surprised anyone since Lane Kiffin is college football’s troll god. On the other hand, I saw FAU fans recently getting boners over what their secondary might do to Brandon Wimbush because he – GASP! – overthrew a receiver in practice. There’s no loyalty on the field, so no matter how much I appreciate FAU for respecting UCF, the Knights need to take the Owls seriously. Same goes for FAMU in Week 1, sad and lonely UConn in Week 5 and Tulsa and Tulane later in the season. Rule numero uno to keeping this machine rolling is punching down and punching hard at the little guys. 2) Humiliate the P5 programs that had the balls to play UCF. All this 2-for-1 BS has been exhausting, because it’s like trying to find truth in political news. No one is being honest, especially not the SEC ADs and coaches, because if they had any balls (or confidence in their programs) they’d just suck it up and sign the home and home. And it doesn’t help anyone that a certain AD at a certain school is signing big 2-for-1 deals partially as a middle finger to UCF, but also because he’s a college football good, old boy who “plays by the rules.” Screw them all. All we can worry about is what’s on the schedule, and so this season UCF must worry about beating Stanford and Pitt to earn respect. Stanford always scares me because West Coast and speed and whatever. Pitt, on the other hand, should be an easy win, but we best believe they will be coming in hot after being humiliated last year – after they begged to get out of playing UCF. So embarrassing for them. Oh well!
3) The defense probably needs to be a little better. I always get a lot of hate from other fans because I’m “too negative” or “never optimistic” or “a total dick.” It’s mostly warranted. So, I promised to be as positive as possible in writing this preview, and I am mostly optimistic about this team’s chances in 2019. But… let’s talk about the defense really quick, okay? There were a few times last season when I was worried the defense was gonna blow it. Guys looked tired, a little confused at times, and occasionally overwhelmed. That happens when you have a lot of youth on a team, but what I’m mostly worried about is my blood pressure and heart health. I have to believe the defense will get better because I cannot take anymore punch-for-punch, highscoring affairs. At least not against teams UCF should easily defeat. Let’s agree to limit the super-dramatic games to Stanford and Houston this season. (USF better be a blowout for the good guys after all their nonsense this year.) 4) Support the team, bros. Quarterback competitions are usually exciting to watch, but given the circumstances, UCF’s competition is kind of a bummer, especially after Darriel Mack’s injury. By the time this article is published and millions of people read it, UCF will have named a starting QB and the season will have started, but because my psychic powers only work on game results and season records, I can’t guess. It doesn’t matter, though. Whomever is named starter – Brandon Wimbush (my guess), Dillon Gabriel (I’d like to see him redshirt), Quadry Jones (I hear great things but is he ready?) – that fella needs 100 percent support from the fans. There will be no wondering what it might be like if Dillon or Jones was starting over Wimbush (or insert which name wherever). I know it’ll be tough because sports fans are irrational and always wondering, “What if?” But we need to collectively focus our positive juju on the guy Josh Heupel picks and will the entire offense to ongoing glory. 5) Believe in the gospel of Josh. How great is Josh Heupel as UCF’s coach? I don’t even remember the guy before him anymore. Steve Chilly? Sean Sleet? Splorp Freezynips? No clue. Wherever that dude is, I hope he’s living his best life and totally not regretting the decision he made to abandon this program and his players. After all, we have Josh. Josh is the best. Josh is never going anywhere. Never ever never ever never ever ever. And as he distances himself from the program and roster gifted to him by Screech Fronk or whatever that guy’s name was, we will now have a much better idea of where UCF is going under the watchful eye and scruffy brilliance of our man Josh. Believe in Josh and all will be perfect. At least this season, but hopefully for years and years to come. Words by Ashley Burns @MayorBurnsy photos courtesy UCF Athletics
