Axis Magazine: Tell me about Not Taco bell Material. What are your faithful readers be getting themselves into? Adam Carolla: I think it’s just a very good book. It’s my whole life, and it’s funny, I think the audiobook is good, the written book is good. It’s me from zero to about a year ago. It’s just all there and it’s all laid out. You don’t have to know me or you don’t have to like me. It’s a little more inspirational than you might think, and it’s just a good, funny read. Whether you’re a fan of mine or not a fan of mine, you’ll definitely get something out of it. It’s got some cool pictures and it’s like 330-something pages. Thanks in advance to everyone who gets it.

Axis: And you’re touring with Dennis Prager. He’s also a somewhat controversial personality, what should fans who are unfamiliar with him know? AC: He’s a real wise dude. I’m really blessed as a big fan of his, and I’m happy to be on stage with the guy. We just make a great team. He’s filled with wisdom and I’m filled with comedy. It’s a really interesting dynamic that kind of reminds me of me and Dr. Drew back in the day. You will not be disappointed if you come out and see me and Dennis Prager.

Axis: I thoroughly enjoyed reading your first book “In 50 Years, We’ll All Be Chicks” (peaked at No. 8 on the New York Times Best Seller List). When, do you believe, did it stop being okay for men to behave like “men”? AC: There was the feminist movement of the late ‘60s and early ‘70s that was confusing. It said, Ladies, you don’t have to be barefoot and pregnant in the kitchen. You can go out there and work, and there’s no reason that you couldn’t drive a semi-truck if you want to drive a semi-truck. You want to be an airplane pilot or an astronaut, you can be an airplane pilot or an astronaut. You know, it was a time when people would say, “I don’t care who my president is, as long as he’s smart and wise,” and someone would say, “He or she!” This thing happened where women started going out and saying, “Look, I’m going to take a karate class, and I’m going to be a lawyer and a doctor, and I’m going to drive a truck.” Then they had a second part of the movement, when they said, “All right, dudes, now you start acting like chicks.” It was almost like how a steam train moves, how one side moves forward and the other goes back. Except there was no reason for the dudes to go back. The chicks should have just gone forward. You can go out and become a doctor, but we’re not going to start waxing our backs and getting our cuticles pushed. We don’t have to fill that void that you guys left. Eventually it evolved into it being okay for guys to take a day off and pick the kids up from soccer practice, cook the meals, and do all the crap that they formerly didn’t do. Next thing you know, they lost their abilities to fix cars, fight patch roofs, and things like that. Now we’re in this kind of freefall, where it’s hard to tell the sexes apart, and that’s not a good thing. Your kids need a dad and they need a mom. But I always say, “All things being equal.” You give me a better gay couple than a straight couple, and I’ll take the gay couple.

Axis: Why do you think that we’ve reached this new level of PC in which, of all people, comics are carrying torches with sort of a “How dare you” outrage? AC: I’ll put it to you this way – what percentage of comedians would want to tell you that they’re voting Republican? None of them. Find me a comedian, maybe Dennis Miller. Is there any hip comedian that wants to vote Republican? The answer is no. They’re all worried about the 99%. They’d all like to have taxes raised, but they’re all incorporated and they all have tax people. They use the Prius as a company car and write it off through their corporations. Why are they doing that? If they really want to pay more in taxes, there’s a way to do that – pay more in taxes. But don’t write anything off, don’t be incorporated, and don’t have a tax person. Just claim zero dependents and pay the maximum amount. Do they really want to raise taxes or do they want to just say it? What comedian is willing to admit that they’re in the 1 percentile? That they’re not in the 99% and they don’t work that long, they don’t work that hard, and they make tons of money? Anybody? You ever hear David Letterman or Jay Leno talk about how much money they make? No, it’s bad for business. They want to be part of the 99%. They don’t talk about flying privately, they don’t talk about being corporate, and they don’t talk about fighting as hard as they can fight to pay as little as possible in taxes every year. And when it comes to immigration, they don’t live in Los Angeles. Why are they sending their kids to a private school? Go send them to Hollywood High. Ninety percent Hispanic. Why not? They’re hypocrites. Axis: You recently received a great deal of criticism about your comment about women comedy writers in a New York Times interview. What did you think about the criticism and outrage over that comment? AC: Oh listen, I don’t care. First off, I don’t work for Viacom, CBS, Les Moonves, NBC, ABC, or FOX. I don’t work for anybody. I have a podcast. I sell books and I sell theater tickets. Obviously, I was misquoted. I didn’t say, “Women aren’t funny.” I said that men are funnier than women, because I was asked if men are funnier than women. I just told the truth, and then people took it and ran with it, and it’s fine. Everyone can kiss my ass, I don’t care. I’m not involved with Hollywood, I don’t want to be involved with Hollywood. In terms of the future or whatever, it’s like, “Hey man, you don’t want to piss off Les Moonves, because what about your next CBA project?” There is no next CBS project, because I wouldn’t work for them. I don’t want to work in terrestrial radio, I don’t want to do a sitcom. I want to work for myself, and I do work for myself. I make plenty of money working for myself. I built it so they can’t take it away.

WHAT: WARPED TOUR: ORLANDO WHEN: FRIDAY, JULY 27th WHO: (look to the far right) WHY: MOD SUN (read below) aXis: So you are out getting Warped all summer, how did the tour invite come about? MOD: I snuck into a booking agency at night & searched for hours to find kevin lyman’s email. I personally hit him up & shared my story about why i should be a part of this tour. He replied almost immediately & we’ve been best friends ever since. Love ya Kevin! aXis: Been out a few weeks, anything crazy happen so far backstage? MOD: The answer is yes, LOTS OF CRAZINESS. Its summer time & everyone on warped are friends with each other. aXis: How about on stage? MOD: It was raining all day on the Houston date but during my last song “Happy As Fuck” i brought the sun out for exactly 3 minutes. As soon we finished the sun got eaten by clouds. aXis: How about in front of the stage? MOD: Crowd surfing, smoking, high fives, signs, & good times. aXis: Getting enough sun on the road? Give us a little back story to the Mod Sun philosophy, so everyone can grab a little of it when you roll through Otown? MOD: Mod Sun stands for “Movement On Dreams Stand Under None”. I make hippy hop music. My songs are surround by the fact that you woke up this morning & that right there is a reason to be happy. Im teaching the world how easy it is to make your mentality your reality. If you want the good life, think about the good. aXis: Any parting shots for the uninitiated? MOD: I believe in you.

haunting stages “Music that spans genres and generations. Simple music with a simple purpose. Finding a message is easy, listen for yourself to see.”

Everyday Ghosts is a 4-piece “tribal-rock” band based in Orlando, Florida. The music draws upon many rhythmic influences including funk, afrobeat, latin and jazz to create a unique sound that resonates familiarity but invokes the exotic as well. Since the introduction of newcomer Ben Browne on drums, the musical direction of the band continues to grow and has shifted from traditional structured songs to centering on live improvisation and channeling a raw, primitive, danceable energy that radiates in the Everyday Ghosts’ high-powered performances. aXis: So we totally dug the set at Wall St Plaza during FMF, you guys managed to throw a party on a cloudy day. So what’s the secret to getting a crowd going? I think our joy and passion for doing the one thing we all love doing the most is projected RJ: through our expressions and body language and that draws people in. The message of the songs and Roberts approach to conveying them is what keeps them entranced and listening, and it doesn’t hurt to play music that people can dance and really get down to. aXis: You have a nice blend of party/jam tunes with melodic sensibility, when writing a tune, are you thinking about either side of the spectrum? RJ: This is the part where we are supposed to give you an answer like we listen to this or we are heavily influenced by that but the truth is each of us come from such a different place musically.  With that we have found a way to create a sound that encompasses each individuals creative/spiritual path to become what we call Everyday Ghosts.

aXis: The new album reps the band well, but how would you explain it, or sell it to someone in 3 sentences or less? RJ: This album is based on the journey we go through in life. It reminds you that we all have choices to either be in control or to except the fate of things. Most importantly it allows you to smile and realize that everyday the future is left to be imagined. aXis: World tour opening for any band, past or present, who is it, and why, and if you get to guest jam on one tune, which one? RJ: We have to cheat on this one a little :)  It would have to be a two act night.  The first would be an acoustic set with Led Belly where he would politely show us the way Black Betty is supposed to played.  For the second act we would wanna be somewhere between the Wall and the Dark side of the Moon! aXis: Even though many will never buy a tangible CD, and will just do the Itunes thing, if you were to place your album on a shelf in consideration of genre and vibe, considering all past and present artists, what two albums would be the ‘left’ and the ‘right’ of the album? RJ: In the world we hope still exists where people still buy vinyl and CD’s you would find us sandwiched between The Doors Debut and Stevie Wonder Songs in the Key of Life.  We had a hard time with this one because you might not pick up on our heavy gangsta rap influence but we gotta give a shout out to Easy E all the same. aXis: Your favorite ghost of all time, if you could hang with a ghost? RJ: No matter who this might be we can all agree we would love to know why we are here and what is our purpose, any spirit who could answer that question would be welcome at our dinner table anytime.

EXPIRATION 8/1/12 • July 2012

There’s nothing hotter in Orlando this summer than the Dwight Howard saga, as our oncebeloved hero continues to burn our bridges and stab us all in our heart repeatedly until even our cries for mercy sound like whispers in a desolate forest. By the time this column is published, we’ll still be neck deep in purgatory, as we wait to see what new Magic GM Rob Hennigan chooses to do with our bipolar superstar and his trade demands. I predict that on July 11, Howard will be traded to the team that makes the best offer. That’s just what I’d do, get his unhappy ass out of here on the fastest train to whatever team is willing to deal with this same crap in a few more years. But I would also completely understand if Henny wants to keep him around, try to win, and then trade his ass before the deadline when teams are a lot more desperate to win. Either way, say goodbye to Superman, who, in a bizarre twist of irony, has a heart made of Kryptonite.

So Burnsy, you say while admiring my rippled abs, where should Dwight go? Where should we trade him? How should Henny handle this? Let’s examine this with a little game of Hot & Cold. HOT: Our new Magic GM. Let’s start with the thing that I’ve been begging for the last two years, a new general manager. Do you know how happy I am to be rid of Otis Smith? Let’s put it this way – without Otis’ terrible trades and contracts, the Magic would have actually had money to spend this summer, assuming they’d have used the amnesty on Rashard Lewis and not Gilbert Arenas, because that big ol’ schmuck would have never been allowed to half ass for $60 million here. COLD: Our new GM, Rob Hennigan, is only 30-years old. A lot of people aren’t too keen on that. I don’t care. He’s a smart dude with a great pedigree. Also, he should be my best friend now. We’ll hang out and I’ll advise him on deals. Then we’ll play darts at Cleo’s because we’re not in the mood for more strip clubs. Haha, I love my new best friend!

HOT: Just trade the dude already. July 11 marks the day that players can be traded and free agents can sign. Dwight wants out? Punish him first. Trade his ass to any team that will take him, except for the team he wants to go to. If Sacramento has some expiring deals they want to shed, take them. Take whatever, just get rid of him already. COLD: Okay, don’t just take whatever. Please don’t give into this sociopath by sending him to the Brooklyn Nets for their basket o’ crap. The Nets would have to sign Lopez to a max deal to make that trade work. We don’t need another bad contract! That’s not how you rebuild. HOT: Get some youth in here. The Houston Rockets are probably going to sign Omer Asik for close to $25 million. So I assume that means they’re passing on Dwight. But if they still want him for a season, take any deal that brings over all their draft picks. Trust me, we want to see Royce White in a Magic jersey.

COLD: Don’t let him walk. Dwight also told Yahoo!’s Adrian Wojnarowski that he’ll play the entire season in Orlando and just walk at the season’s end if they won’t trade him. Normally, I’d be fine with this. Getting $20 million off the books is just as important as finding great free agents. But we also need to trade Dwight so we can force a team to take Hedo Turkoglu, Chris Duhon, or Quentin Richardson with hi. I’d add Big Bagy Davis or Jason Richardson to that group, but no team is that desperate. Thanks again, Otis. HOT: There will be life after Dwight. Fortunately for us, the NBA isn’t the same as it once was. There are more and more superstars emerging each season, so it won’t take nearly as long for us to recover as it did when Shaquille O’Neal left. Also, we’re not suffering at the hands of a hockey GM who thinks he knows basketball, nor are we coping with Otis trading for his overpaid best friends anymore. There is light at the end of our tunnel, my friends. Stay strong. COLD: Don’t forget, we’re screwed. As much as I want Magic fans to remain positive, we can’t ignore that we have another Dark Ages looming. Let’s make the best of it and not all go running out to buy Miami Heat shirts. Please, people. Let cooler heads prevail.
