This publication presents works that were realised during two periods of staying in China between 2010 and 2011 as artist in residence in Chengdu, funded by the Austrian Ministery for Culture, bm:ukk as well as at organhaus art space in Chongqing. ORGANHAUS ART SPACE - 器·Haus艺术空间 Organhaus Art Space is an independent art space run by artists and curators. We devote our efforts to providing exchanges and studio space for young and experimental artists working in every kind of media, we also hold exhibitions at regular intervals. Organhaus is based in the 501 Art Warehouse in Chongqing, China. We have approximately 200 m2 of exhibition and studio space ready to receive applications for exchange programs and residency plans from national and international organizations. He graduated from the University of Applied Arts in Vienna and holds a Phd by the London University of the Arts, LCC. JINGSHENFENXI Axel Stockburger & Lisa Meixner (2010) Videoinstallation, 3 HD Projections, Sound. “The unconscious is structured like the Chinese language.” Huo Datong JINGSHENFENXI is a three-channel video installation that was realised as a collaboration between Lisa Meixner and Axel Stockburger during an artist residency in Chengdu, China. The piece poses a number of questions concerning the relationship between the concept of Psychoanalysis and Chinese Culture. Since Sigmund Freud’s writing was translated into Chinese in the 1920s, Chinese history in the last century led to a disruption of discourse with such concepts. At present a new interest in the concepts of Psychoanalysis seems to emerge with analysts and scholars such as the Lacan specialist Professor Huo Datong who works and teaches in Chengdu. At the core of the installation is a video of a performance in Chengdu city where Axel Stockburger posed as a highly depressive Panda. The iconic power of this animal that is often connected to ease and happiness, as well as its use by numerous brands, agencies and artists made it an ideal vehicle for the projection of an emotional state that public audiences in the city could connect to. This video is accompanied by a text animation which focuses on the Chinese translation of the word “Psychoanalysis” and the different layers of meaning associated with the characters. A third video consists of an interview with Professor Datong, posing questions about the function and meaning of Psychoanalysis in present day China.


精神分析 Axel Stockburger & Lisa Meixner (2010) 影像装置,3台高清投影,声音 “无意识像汉字一样构成。” 霍大同 “精神分析”是一个三频影像装置作品,它是由 Lisa Meixner 和Axel Stockburger在中国成都地一个艺术家驻留项目期间共同实现的创作。 这个作品提出了很多关于精神分析与中国文化之间的关系的问题。西 格蒙德·弗洛伊德的著作在19世纪20年代翻译介绍到中国之后,已经 在文化大革命时期被遗忘了。目前分析者和学者像工作并授课于成都 的拉康研究专家霍大同教授在精神分析观点上的一个新的关注点似乎 开始浮现。这个装置的中心是一个拍摄于成都的影像作品,影片中由 Axel Stockburger 扮演一个极度抑郁的熊猫,这个动物的形象化的符 号传达的经常是与舒适与幸福有关,而且它被用于许多品牌,服务机 构,艺术家也用它来作为一种来推断与这个城市的公众相关联的情绪 状态。影像也伴随着文字动画,主要演示英文“”Psychoanalysis”的中 文翻译,并且展示与每个词有关的不同层面的意思。第三个影像由一 个对霍大同教授的访谈组成,提出了一些关于精神分析在今天的中国 的作用与意义的问题。

COSEPUREI Axel Stockburger (2010-11) - HD Video, Length: 10:00 min. “What is society? I have answered: Society is imitation” Gabriel Tarde The Video COSEPUREI was realised with a group of Cosplayers of the Century Noah group in Chongqing. The players were filmed in the middle of the city directly under a motorway bridge. COSEPUREI is one element of an extended artistic research project that focuses on the transport of culture through global media systems. Cosplay originates from 1980’s Japan and has gripped the imagination of fans and practitioners across Asia and the U.S. The groups of Cosplayers manage to embody characters from Japanese Anime Cartoons or Avatars from Computer games and transform elements from fantasy universes produced by media corporations into physical performative embodiments. They produce elaborate costumes and devise choreographies and shows as a group thereby putting the social aspect of this culture before the individual character. COSEPUREI aims to capture the threshold between narratives provided by global media franchises and local communities making them their own through forms of variation and imitation. WORLDEATER - WUXIA Axel Stockburger (2010) Text on Acrylic Plates, CNC, 80cm x 100cm. WORLDEATER is a series of text-based pieces consisting of names of characters and titles, listing characters or functions from narrative media universes. In the case of WORLDEATER - WUXIA, the names of famous organisations from Wuxia films and novels, as they appear for example in the famous Shaw Brothers movies, were collected and cut into acrylic plates with a CNC machine. WORLDEATER is presented as a gesture that aims at the act of devouring such narrative universes, in order to process them and to spit out the stripped leftovers. Here the individual process of referencing cultural signifiers is set in motion as a textual “bare bones”- operation. To be confronted with such lists of names that might or might not trigger recognition and memory for members of the audience, along with their economical role as copyrighted goods, leads right towards the core issues of so-called information societies, namely the creation, reception and trade with language as material. 世界吞噬者——武侠 Axel Stockburger (2010) 亚克力版文本, 数控机床切割, 80cm x 100cm. 《世界吞噬者——武侠》是一个基于文本的系列,包含许多文字和题 目,列出了来自叙事媒体领域的字符。在《世界吞噬者——武侠》这 个作品中,武侠电影或小说中的许多著名的组织名称被收集起来由数 控机床刻制到亚克力板里。这些名字常常出现在如著名的邵氏兄弟公 司的电影里。 《世界吞噬者——武侠》呈现的是一种特殊的表达,它 指向吞噬那种叙事领域的举动,目的是能够加工它们,并使其吐出它 们脱去外壳后的残余物。这里个体参照文化表征的过程是建立在动作 作为文本的“梗概”效用中的。面对这些或有或无地触动观众认同和记忆 的名字列表时,伴随着他们的经济地位,就像一种有版权的商品,直 接指向了所谓的信息社会的核心论题, 即把语言作为材料的创造,接收 和交易。

WAN SERIES Axel Stockburger (2010 -2011) Series of Photographs ”Agôn is the vindication of personal responsibility; alea is a negation of the will, a surrender to destiny” Roger Caillois WAN SERIES is comprised of street photographs of people in Chengdu, Chongqing, Shanghai and Beijing who play different kinds of games. Here, the game creates a temporary focus of attention for people , a little island of concentration, which also draws crowds of onlookers and passersby who stay and follow the action. As Roger Caillois has noted, the types of games being played are often a mix between agon within a logic of individual contest, often for money, and it’s opposite, namely, alea creating an opening for the external force of indeterminacy. Above all, the WAN SERIES aims to capture the social magnetism of games in the public sphere in China. “玩”系列 Axel Stockburger (2010 -2011) 系列照片 “竞赛是个人责任的辩护;机会是意愿的对立面,听任命运的摆布。” 罗杰·卡洛斯 《“玩”系列》拍摄的是在成都、重庆、上海和北京的街上玩各种游戏的 人们。在这里,游戏创造了一个暂时的关注,一个小小的受关注的岛 屿,也吸引了一群围观者和过路者驻足和跟随这个活动。正如罗杰·卡 洛斯提到的,玩耍各种游戏常常是两个方面的综合体,一是为了钱财 的个体竞赛的逻辑,另外一个是它的反面,即机会创造的外部力量的 不确定的开端。综上所述,这个系列的作品旨意捕捉在中国公共领域 里游戏的社会吸引力。
