monkey town

wild monkeys becoming a pest to locals and tourists

•The• monkeys inhabiting the area around Wat Khao Takiab were the focus of attention at the end of hua hin

last week, as their numbers have grown to an alarming estimate of around three thousand, which has consequently caused more related problems, from aggressive behaviour towards people as the monkeys search for food, to damage to property and power outages caused as they climb on and damage cables. This is not the only area affected by ‘armies’ of monkeys either, but it is certainly the most prominent as it is visited by many domestic and foreign tourists, and the Mayor of Hua Hin, Noppaporn Wuthikun, visited the area to inspect the problem, and see what could be done about it. While no solutions have yet been proposed by the Mayor’s office, it seems clear that some efforts must be made to both reduce and control the population, probably by a combination of sterilisation and removal of some of the animals, as well as making greater efforts to dissuade the feeding of the animals, which has unfortunately become part of some local traders business. The monkeys of Khao Takiab have become a tourist attraction in their own right, so to remove all of them may not be the right strategy, although from a health perspective of both the monkeys and the humans staying in or visiting the area it is probably the correct thing to do. Whether there are any suitable facilities to rehome the monkeys is another aspect, as many of them may not survive in the wild, having been accustomed to being fed regularly, but there is an animal sanctuary between Hua Hin and Cha Am that may be the right place. We have to hope that the Mayor is able to come up with a plan that suits everybody, including the monkeys.

A section for all you budding etymologists where each week the origin of a word or phrase is investigated. This week it is....Come clean To make a full disclosure; to confess. ‘Come clean’ originated in the USA in either the late 19th or early 20th century. The earliest example found of it in print is from the Moberly Evening Democrat, August 1904: “Now, then Chillicothe papers - Constitution, Democrat, Tribune - come clean. Tell the truth.” The unnamed journalist who wrote that must have liked the phrase, as it appears several times in the same paper from around that time and before it is found elsewhere. It’s possible that the phrase was coined in Moberly, but that’s just conjecture. ‘Come’ is clearly just a shortening of ‘become’; ‘clean’ means ‘not sullied by untruth’, as in the earlier phrases ‘make a clean breast of it’ and ‘keep one’s hands clean’.

No one knows what mysteries lie deep in the human heart, but you figure they’re just not rinsing it enough or using a bright enough flashlight.

Financial success continues to elude you as you have yet to determine the best way to advertise your enjoyable and affordable mustache rides.

An error in last week’s horoscope has probably resulted in you having a chance midnight encounter with a tall dark strangler. The stars regret any inconvenience.

Although it’s true that the only tool you have is a hammer, everything you see looks a lot more like a sort of mediumsized box than a nail.

When all’s been said and all’s been done and you finally look back on the entirety of your life, it will be about three PM next Wednesday.

racist A racist walks into a crowded bar. He looks around and sees a black man sitting in a corner. The racist walks up to the bar, turns around and announces, ‘I’m going to buy everyone in this bar a free drink, except for that black guy over there!’ Everybody is clapping and cheering for the racist and when he buys the last pint, the black man turns around, puts his thumb up and says, ‘Thanks mate!’ The racist is slightly puzzled by his reaction but doesn’t pay too much attention to it. The next night, the racist goes into the same bar and again, there is a black guy sitting in the corner, so the man, again, goes to the bar, turns around and says, ‘I’m going to buy everyone here a free drink, except for that black guy over there!’ The patrons are all ecstatic and are hugging and cheering the racist for his generosity. When he buys the last pint, the black guy turns around, puts his thumb up and says, ‘Thanks mate!’ The racist scratches his head and asks the barman, ‘Why is that black guy thanking me when he’s the only person I’m not buying drinks for?’ ‘Well’ the barman responds, ‘he owns this place.’

on the tip of your tongue On June 16th 1858 Abraham Lincoln declared ‘A house divided against itself cannot stand’. That’s quite enough about of the state of the British government for the moment. On to more serious things, and those tricks which are supposed to help people remember things. It comes to us all eventually. The brain cells slow down, often threatening to go on strike altogether, but younger people can often have difficulty remembering some things as well. Like peoples’ names, or where the car keys have hidden themselves. In fact it is said that our memories begin to go AWOL at around the age of 45, leaving a potential 50 odd years spent searching for the car keys. The problem is so widespread that ‘brain training’ has become a big business. But are the methods used by Memory Trainers just fancy ways to boost their income? Take those annoying coded locks for example. A memory trainer will commonly recommend forming images in your mind to represent each number from zero to nine. So for example a football becomes a zero, a swan is a two, a pair of handcuffs a three. (You probably prefer handcuffs to be an eight but bear with.... each to their own.) Then all you have to do when faced with that lock, or need to use an ATM, is conjure up those images and hey presto, job done. Similar picture associations in your head are also supposed to help remember what you went in Tesco for, or the date of a friends’ birthday. Sorry but I’m not convinced. There is nothing difficult about making a shopping list, or keeping important dates in a diary/phone/computer. As for key codes, surely it’s simpler to remember the key press sequence? After a while that becomes such a habit there is no need to even remember the numbers, let alone what images represent them. Like touch typing, your fingers just know where to go. And as for your own mobile phone number - repetition does work. How many of you were subject to the joys of learning Latin declensions at school? I bet those who did can still rattle off quite a few of them decades later without a football or a swan in sight. Job done. Now for an item of news which surfaced last month; a gay French couple had planned to marry when one of them, a gendarme, was killed in the line of duty. A sad event that could happen to anyone, and would normally result in a cancelled wedding. But not in France, where the remaining partner was granted permission for a posthumous marriage. It wasn’t just a politically correct statement. France is a world leader in posthumous marriages, having allowed them since

around the time of World War One to enable the fiancees of soldiers killed in the war to marry their dear departed, and in 1950 the French government set legal guidelines for the practice. These require the remaining partner to get the approval of the President and Justice Minister for a marriage by proxy, by providing evidence of the prior intent to marry, as well as proof that their partners’ death was unexpected (which would seem to suggest that the newly wed may gain entitlement to their late spouse’s pension.) The marriage vows do have to be tweaked a bit, and the newly wed will of course have to make do with kissing a photo. But two questions remain for you to ponder over your Chang - who do they have the first dance with? And more importantly can they get a posthumous divorce as well?

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is working on potential deals for three France internationals as he prepares for some major departures. Monaco’s 18-year-old striker Kylian Mbappe, his 21-year-old team-mate Thomas Lemar and Lyon forward Alexandre Lacazette are all targets. (Telegraph) Lyon president has said the Gunners can have 26-year-old Lacazette if they sell them France striker Olivier Giroud in a player-plus-cash deal worth £60m. (Le10Sport, via Sun) West Ham are also planning a move for 30-year-old Giroud, who has said he will not be happy with limited playing time next season. (London Evening Standard) Everton’s signing of Sunderland’s England Under-21 goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, 23, will kick off £150m of summer spending at Goodison Park. (Mirror) Toffees boss Ronald Koeman is targeting Ajax and Netherlands midfielder Davy Klaassen, 24, Swansea’s 27-year-old Iceland playmaker Gylfi Sigurdsson and Burnley and England centre-back Michael Keane, 24. (Daily Express) Manchester United’s England defender Chris Smalling will be sold this summer, with West Ham, West Brom and Everton interested in the 27-year-old. (Telegraph) Manchester City are hopeful Alexis Sanchez will not sign a contract extension at Arsenal, paving the way for the 28-yearold Chile forward to make a £50m move to Etihad Stadium. (Manchester Evening News) Leicester have offered £16.5m for Hull defender Harry Maguire, with the 24-year-old valued at £20m. (Daily Mail) Newcastle want to sign 34-year-old Napoli goalkeeper Pepe Reina who is, according to his agent, keen on a return to the Premier League. (Newcastle Chronicle) Swansea City have offered French striker Bafetimbi Gomis, 31, to Turkish side Istanbul Basaksehir in exchange for 33-year-old Togo forward Emmanuel Adebayor. (Beinsport, via Wales Online) Manchester City are ready to reduce their £16m asking price for 29-year-old France midfielder Samir Nasri because of a lack of interest.(Sun)

vote of confidence ENGLAND U-20 CUP WINNING SQUAD ASKED TO FORM GOVERNMENT

uk Given the unholy choice between the Coalition of Chaos and a Band of Bigots, and the terrifying prospect of the political resurrection of Michael Gove, the Palace has taken the unprecedented approach of dissolving Parliament (again) and asking the England U-20 cup-winning squad to form the next government. Whilst lacking an elected mandate, the Palace has been impressed with the cohesion, coherence and commitment shown by the team throughout the campaign, with both major party political leaders being urged to ‘watch and learn’. The Palace has also expressed the delight at having a youthful, athletic and popular government, whilst admitting that Dominic Calvert-Lewin is ‘a bit of a hottie’. Professor David Judge from the University of Studies looked into the constitutional aspects of the move for AWOL, and says, “From a legal standpoint, the Palace can
