BUSSED UP! CUSTOMERS FURIOUS OVER AIRPORT BUS MOVE

•Disgruntled • customers of the Roong Reuang Coach Co., Ltd., who operate the nine times a day bus to HUA HIN

and from Suvarnabhumi airport, have been voicing their feelings over the recent announcement that the arrival and departure point for the buses is being moved from it’s existing location near soi 96, to a new bus station near Hua Hin airport. The company made the announcement, and informed some of its customers by email, but many others were not informed, and this failure in communication, plus the company’s policy of not allowing refunds or cancellations, has sparked a flurry of angry posts on social media. The change was scheduled to happen on Wednesday 11th January, but customers were being advised to call before setting out as there was still a possibility that the bus would depart from the old location. The number given was 084 697 3773. At press time reports were that the new station was operating though. In other local transport news, the trial period of free tickets for the Hua Hin to Pattaya ferry has begun in the last week, with a delay caused by the weather which had made the crossing not possible. The ferry has been operating out of the pier in Khao Takiab, and not the fishing pier in Hua Hin as originally announced, but it is thought that it will start to dock at that pier once the free trial is over. Crossings have been taking between two hours and fifteen minutes, and two hours forty five mnutes, and while they have so far gone without a hitch, many passengers have reportedly been ill during the journey due to the rough sea conditions. The paying service is due to start on 15th January, and tickets will apparently be priced at 1,250 baht each way; however it is not clear if return tickets will be available, and some reports suggest that the Pattaya to Hua Hin leg will need to be purchased in Pattaya.

A section for all you budding etymologists where each week the origin of a word or phrase is investigated. The ‘pinch of salt’ variant is more recent. The earliest printed THIS WEEK IT IS.....TAKE WITH A GRAIN OF SALT To take a statement with ‘a grain of salt’ or ‘a pinch of salt’ citation found for it is F. R. Cowell’s Cicero & the Roman means to accept it but to maintain a degree of skepticism about Republic, 1948: its truth. The idea comes from the fact that food is more easily swallowed “A more critical spirit slowly developed, so that Cicero and if taken with a small amount of salt. Pliny the Elder wrote an his friends took more than the proverbial pinch of salt before ancient antidote for poison in Naturalis Historia, 77 A.D. which swallowing everything written by these earlier authors.” translates thus: After the defeat of that mighty monarch, Mithridates, Gnaeus Pompeius found in his private cabinet a recipe for an antidote in his own handwriting; it was to the following effect: Take two dried walnuts, two figs, and twenty leaves of rue; pound them all together, with the addition of a grain of salt; if a person takes this mixture fasting, he will be proof against all poisons for that day.

Is there an English phrase or saying that you would like to know more about? Email it to us on submissions@awolonline.net

The suggestion is that injurious effects can be moderated by the taking of a grain of salt. The figurative meaning, that is, that truth may require moderation by the notional application of ‘a grain of salt’, didn’t enter the language until much later, no doubt influenced by classical scholars’ study of Ancient Greek texts like the works of Pliny. The phrase has been in use in English since the 17th century; for example, John Trapp’s Commentary on the Old and New Testaments, 1647: “This is to be taken with a grain of salt.”

USA Man jailed for three days after police thought his cat litter was crystal meth A man says he was wrongly locked up for three days after police mistook his kitty litter for methamphetamine. Ross Lebeau, 24, from Texas, was arrested on suspicion of possessing the illegal substance. Police stopped his car early in December. When they searched the vehicle, they found half a pound of what they believed to be meth, inside an old sock. ‘They thought they had the biggest bust in Harris County. This was the bust of the year for them,’ Lebeau told Eyewitness News. However, it was actually cat litter which he kept in the car to prevent the windows misting up with condensation. His dad had given it to him, and had also given a sock full of cat litter to his sister to keep in her car. Lebeau was kept in custody for three days before police realised the mistake. ‘I would like an apology,’ ABC reported he said. ‘I was wrongly accused and I’m going to do everything in my power, with my family’s backing, to clear my name.’ According to the channel, initial tests of the kitty litter indicated it WAS meth. However, more extensive testing showed that result was inaccurate. In a statement, the Harris County Sheriff ’s Office said: ‘Regarding this incident all indication shows that the deputies followed basic procedures and followed established protocol related to this incident.

CHINA China builds gigantic cock with face of Donald Trump A giant effigy of Donald Trump as a white and gold cock has arisen in China. The scarily realistic cock, with the face of the President Elect, was hatched at a factory in Jiaxing to usher in the Year of the Rooster. As it inflates, it gives the thumbs up with tiny wings in Trump’s favoured mannerism. The giant birds are destined for parades to welcome the upcoming lunar New Year on January 28. But some people have quipped that the large foul could have been a response to Trump’s foreign policy. Breaking with decades of diplomacy, he accepted a congratulatory phone call from Taiwan’s president after winning the election, sparking a row as Beijing does not recognise it as an independent state. Trump has also threatened to ignite a trade war when he comes to power.

HOSPITAL Mr. Smith was brought to Mercy Hospital (a Catholic hospital), and taken quickly in for coronary surgery. The operation went well and, as the groggy man regained consciousness, he was reassured by a Sister of Mercy, who was waiting by his bed. “Mr. Smith, you’re going to be just fine,” said the nun, gently patting his hand. “We do need to know, however, how you intend to pay for your stay here. Are you covered by insurance?” “No, I’m not,” the man whispered hoarsely. “Then can you pay in cash?” persisted the nun. “I’m afraid I cannot, Sister.” “Well, do you have any close relatives?” the nun questioned sternly. “Just my sister in New Mexico,” he volunteered. “But she’s a humble spinster nun.” “Oh, I must correct you, Mr. Smith. Nuns are not spinsters they are married to God.” “Wonderful,” said Mr. Smith. “In that case, please send the bill to my brother-in-law.”

MATES Two mates were unknowingly sleeping with the same girl at the same time, until they were greeted with the news one day that their common squeeze had got knocked up. Having no way of knowing which was the father, the two mates chipped in and sent her out of town to have the child.

“Doing business without advertising is like winking at a girl in the dark. You know what you are doing but nobody else does.”

Wink with AWOL 081 649 8361

Several months passed without either of the mates hearing from her, so one of them decided to find her and get some news about the pregnancy. The next day, the other one got a call from his mate. “I’ve got some good news and some bad news,” the mate said on the telephone. “Well, give me the good news first,” replied the other. “The good news is that she’s fine, and she had twins,” came the reply. “And the bad news?” “Mine died”

THE HAT An elderly man was quite unhappy because he had lost his favorite hat. Instead of buying a new one, he decided he would go to church and swipe one out of the vestibule. When he got there, an usher intercepted him at the door and took him to a pew where he had to sit and listen to the entiresermon on “The Ten Commandments.” After church, the man met the preacher in the vestibule doorway, shook his had vigorously, and told him “I want to thank you preacher for saving my soul today. I came to church to steal a hat and after hearing your sermon on the 10 Commandments, I decided against it.” Preacher: “You mean the commandment ‘I shall not steal’ changed your mind?” Old Man: “No, the one about adultery did. As soon as you said that I remember where I left my old hat!”

LIFE ON MARS

••

TAKE A BREAK Everybody loves a holiday, right? However in some countries public holidays are quite a rarity, with Mexico being the stingiest with only seven officially observed ‘bank holidays’ every year, while Hungary, the Netherlands, and England and Wales are close behind with eight. Thailand on the other hand has sixteen, although that is still not the highest number, with Colombia and India vying for top spot with eighteen, although some reports state that the latter actually has a whopping twenty one! What confuses the issue in Thailand is that there are also a lot of other days that seem very much like a holiday, when schools and other official offices are closed, because almost every year extra days are announced for one off reasons, as happened in 2016 on at least two occasions; there are also some provinces that observe holidays that others do not, and then other commonly observed international ones, such as May 1st, Labour Day, being observed by only parts of the country. There are a lot of ‘National Observance’ days too, with two coming up this week - Children’s Day, which is always on the second Saturday of January, and Teacher’s Day, on 16th January observance of the latter is often dependent on the school, and whether it is government controlled or private. Of course one crucial difference in Thailand compared with many Western nations is that Sunday has no real significance, although the concept of the weekend does prevail. Sundays have also become more like any other day in even Western nations now though, with only a slight nod in law to it being a day of rest, and a day of religious significance, by restricting the hours

that retailers can operate, and being regarded as overtime for staff in other businesses. Most Thais are employed on a six day per week basis, with one day off a week, although there are still many who are only permitted two days off a month, with very little actual holiday permitted outside of this; compare this to the UK where it is common for workers to have at least twenty days holiday a year, and only work five days a week. And those five days will normally be of only eight hours as well, while their Thai counterparts will more likely be facing a much longer day. Of course the expression ‘work’ can apply very differently, with some employees absolutely earning their money, and others simply turning up, and we’ll leave it to you, the reader, to decide how those numbers stack up in Thailand compared to your own country. While there are similarities between many countries in how their population enjoys their holiday time, the concept of an annual holiday ‘somewhere nice’ is not that prevalent in Thailand, and holiday time is most often spent visiting family, closely followed by temple visits. The idea of a week or fortnight away from home is not really considered by most, and generally beyond the means of most Thais.

IT’S A CULTURAL THING Why does it take teams of scientists, university professors, doctors and other professionals years of research to tell us things that we already knew? You know the kind of thing. That too much sugar makes us fat and rots teeth. That moderate exercise is good, and that secondary smoking is bad. Perhaps even more annoying, and certainly confusing, are the U turns these experts are in the habit of making. Butter is good again. You can have an egg every day. There are even - joy of joys - ‘good’ fats. The latest revelation concerns pubs, and doesn’t even mention the dreaded units. Instead scientists have discovered that people who frequent their local hostelry, where they engage in conversation with others over a pint or three, maybe throw a few darts or stick a quid in the jukebox, tend to be happier and more sociable than others. I realise that this will come as no surprise to expats, but the sad thing is that it has taken extensive time and research to reach this staggering conclusion in the UK. It has also taken years of pub closures here for the research to be seen as necessary. So let’s take a look at what changes to UK pub culture could possibly have brought about the latest revelation. It is easy to point the finger at the 2007 smoking ban, but it is nevertheless a fact that many pubs lost customers over it. Even now there are plenty of people, non smokers included, who find it divisive and would like to see a return to designated smoking areas. But the problems go much deeper than that. With the advent of longer opening hours in the late 1980’s small pubs faced a dilemma. To stay open as long as they legally could, paying extra staff wages, heating etc, catering for a few extra day time customers, or to carry on much as before and risk losing trade. While larger pubs often had the space and facilities to go gastro, and to provide childrens play areas, smaller businesses were left behind as families opted to kill three birds with one stone. Eat, drink, entertain the kids and call it quality time. Now of course the big name gastro pubs with their all day breakfasts and child friendliness thrive, while others continue to close at the rate of 21 a week. The new popularity of craft beers and niche breweries is thankfully seeing a rise in new ‘locals’, along with a new generation of those happy sociable regulars. But it has taken a long time to recognise that not all happy sociable people want to share their real ale quality time with scampi, children and

chips. Talking about sharing - will you welcome the demise of the minivan in Thailand? There are certainly some grounds for the proposed ban on their use as mass transport, and for the Transport Ministry to admit that many are adapted illegally and are driven for too many hours at a time is nothing short of a miracle. Which leaves just two questions. Will you feel safer in the replacement 20 seater micro buses, and do you really expect to see them in operation by next year? Now for a really positive picture of Thailand at it’s best you could do worse than catch up with ‘Thailand: Earth’s Tropical Paradise’. This three part BBC 2 series began on January 1st, with the final part showing this Sunday, the 15th. It is a refreshing change from the usual KhaoSan/Patpong/Pattaya portrayals of life in the Land of Smiles, and focuses on the relationship between Buddhism and the country’s wild life. The photography is stunning, and the series is available on BBC I Player for 30 days.

On This Day

This weeks’ date in history has to be January 8th 2017. The day on which a 70 plus metre long wind turbine blade was erected in the centre of Hull. And before you all ask - well it’s Stage Two in our City of Culture year. It has to be said that Stage One went very well, with the fireworks and the week long light and sound displays attended by zillions of people. And now to our astonishment there is this huge piece of wind turbine arching over the main city square, dwarfing Queen Victoria and threatening to destroy the art gallery. To be fair I have seen much worse sculptures, and full marks to Siemens for finding such a good way to advertise their product and their presence in the city.

SUNDAY 15TH JANUARY 2017 PREMIER LEAGUE Manchester United v Liverpool 23:00 This is always a pulsating game, and the stakes are high this time round - Mourinho’s men can get within two points of their opponents if they win, while Liverpool will be keen to keep the pressure on leaders Chelsea, as well as dealing a blow to their fierce rivals. Both managers will have to be at their tactical best, and Klopp will be demanding that his players show more fight than they did in the FA Cup. The home side have been in good form and we think they will have the edge in what should be a high scoring game, and we predict that Wayne Rooney will break Bobby Charlton’s scoring record to boot.

FIFA spokesperson Simon Williams told reporters, “We saw the England v Iceland debacle in the summer, and we would like to see more of that hilarity on the global stage – so extending the planet’s premier football competition to 48 teams makes that a very real possibility. “Who is to say that England won’t be knocked out by someone like Eritrea in 2026? I would also imagine your tabloids will have made you the favourites to lift the trophy in the run-up to the tournament, which will only add to the
