minimum wage hike causing anxiety

hua hin, THAILAND Fears are growing among the small businesses in the Hua Hin area that they will be forced to raise their prices to enable them to comply with the new minimum wage of 300 baht per day which is in force nationwide since 1st January this year. Some are also concerned that they may have to operate with less staff, affecting the quality of their service, in order to avoid increasing their prices. Particularly affected are the labour intensive businesses that serve the tourists, such as restaurants, bars, guesthouses, massage shops and spas, who are worried that customers will not understand why they are putting prices up at a time when most people around the world are having to tighten their financial belts. One local restaurant owner commented on the knock-on effect the minimum wage might cause by pointing out that if the least skilled employee like a dishwasher is earning over 8000 baht a month, those further up the scale will be expecting more also. Federation of Thai Industries’ vice chairman Taweekit Chaturacharoenkhun predicted on Wednesday that between five and ten per cent of Thailand’s labour intensive businesses, unable to tolerate the new Bt300 daily minimum wage, will close down in the first quarter of this year. He said labour intensive small and medium-sized enterprises, particularly in the textile, service and agricultural sectors, will be severely impacted. He added that the impact of the minimum wage increase will be clearly seen in the second quarter. It does seem almost inevitable that this will be the tipping point for some in the area, and it can only be hoped that customers will be sympathetic to those who raise their prices to avoid closing down.

dorset, england Party in Monaco orders £1,000 curry from Dorset restaurant Wealthy citizens of glamorous Monaco have the finest selection of continental haute cuisine on their doorstep. But nothing quite beats a good curry. So one peckish party from the principality decided to order a takeaway – from an Indian restaurant near Bournemouth. And far from protesting over the cost of making the 1,000km (650-mile) delivery, the Taj eaterie was only too happy to oblige. After all, the bill came to £1,000 (50,000 baht). Staff will freeze the food – £500-worth of tikka and madras curries plus a long list of side dishes – for its journey across the channel. ‘The great thing about curry is that it just keeps getting better and better, so you can keep it frozen and it still tastes great,’ said manager Sammy Islam, 25. The Monaco customers were left with curry cravings after enjoying a meal at the Taj – in Corfe Mullen, Dorset – on a visit to Britain. And they are not the only ones using the frozen delivery service. One couple in France regularly spends £500 on bhuna and balti dishes – and drives six hours to collect them from the ferry in a car

with a freezer in the boot. ‘Anyone can order a frozen takeaway no matter how far away they live,’ Mr Islam said. ‘A lot of people who order our frozen curries are expats. They say they can’t find the same taste elsewhere so this seemed like a great idea.’ shanghai, china Shark tank explodes in busy shopping centre, leaving 15 injured Shoppers were left seriously injured after a 33-tonne shark tank suddenly exploded in the middle of a busy shopping centre. Flying shards of glass and a torrent of water left 15 people injured at the bustling Orient shopping mall. CCTV footage shows members of the public ducking for cover after the tank, which housed sharks, turtles and fish, shattered without warning. Customers, shop assistants and security staff were injured when the tank burst, with many being taken to hospital suffering from deep cuts after being showered by broken glass. Investigations into the incident are still ongoing, however it has been suggested the sudden drop in temperature across the city may have been to blame.

A section for all you budding etymologists where each week the origin of a word or phrase is investigated. This week it is.... To a T ‘tee’. The ‘to a tee’ version isn’t recorded at all until 1771 Exactly; properly; precisely. The expression ‘to a T’, is often extended to form other when J. Giles used it in his Poems: phrases: ‘down to a T’, ‘suits to a T’, ‘fits to a T’, ‘generous “I’ll tell you where You may be suited to a tee.” to a T’ etc. The original form ‘to a T’ is an old phrase and John Jamieson, in the etymological dictionary is first recorded in James Wright’s satire The Humours Jamieson’s Dictionary of the Scottish Language, 1867, and Conversations of the Town, 1693: “All the under records ‘to a tee’ as ‘to a tittle’. If even a 19th century Villages and Towns-men come to him for Redress; Scots lexicographer doesn’t support the Scottish sports origins they would seem to lack credibility. which he does to a T.” It is difficult to determine the origin of this phrase. It Given Wright’s earliest ‘to a T’ usage and the lack of would be helpful to know the correct spelling; ‘T’, ‘tee’ evidence to support the ‘tee’ or ‘tea’ versions, it is safe or ‘tea’. ‘Tea’ is the easiest to deal with as it appears in to state that the proper spelling is ‘to a T’. So, what T no early citations of the expression and is clearly just a was meant? It seems most likely to be ‘tittle’, which misspelling. The proposed derivations that assume the is a small stroke or point in writing or printing and is now best remembered via the term jot or tittle. The best phrase is ‘to a tee’ are: The phrase derives from the sports of golf or curling, reason for believing that this is the source of the ‘T’ is which have a tee as the starting or ending point that the phrase ‘to a tittle’ existed in English well before respectively. The curling usage would seem to match ‘to a T’, with the same meaning; for example, in Francis the meaning better as the tee is the precise centre of Beaumont’s Jacobean comedy drama The Woman Hater, the circle in which players aim to stop their stones. 1607. we find: Ile quote him to a tittle. However, neither sport is referred to in any of the early In this case, although there is no smoking gun, the ‘to citations of the phrase and there’s really no evidence a tittle’ derivation would probably stand up in court as to support either derivation apart from use of the word ‘beyond reasonable doubt’.

Drink Driving I would like to share an experience with you about drinking and driving. As you well know, some of us have been lucky not to have had brushes with the authorities on our way home from the various social sessions over the years. A couple of nights ago, I was out for a few drinks with some friends and had a few too many beers and then topped it off with a double scotch. Not a good idea. Knowing full well I was at least slightly over the limit, I did something I’ve never done before: I took a taxi home. Sure enough I passed a police road block but because it was a taxi, they waved it past. I arrived home safely without incident, which was a real surprise. I have never driven a taxi before and am not sure where I got it.

ChaAm Gossip Sometimes the expat has some confusing choices to make. Take for example a recent pre-New Year party where patrons at a Pub could hear strange noises coming from a car parked close by. In the gloom of the street a woman could be seen smacking on the window of the parked car. The story the drinking patrons heard was that the Thai ladies husband was asleep in the car after drinking heavily. In fact he’d snuck out to a different bar for a drink with some mates. The band played on and the occasional noises coming from the lady smacking on the car were “brushed off” as just an attempt to wake her husband up; and mostly everyone quickly ignored it. Unbeknownst to everyone, the

woman was gradually destroying the car. Windows, mirrors, the hood; all were being pelted constantly with rocks of an ever increasing size and weight to the point that most glass and panels of the car were damaged beyond the point of a serious repair job. Perhaps parking your car near concrete blocks is not the best idea if the expat understands anger and alcohol are a dangerous combination. In any country at any time it’s always best to take no chances. Despite the car being in his wife’s name the damage caused would run into the tens of thousands of Baht. Drink a-pace and repent at your leisure? There has to be a moral to this story and that must be: don’t leave

anything to chance, protect your harmony and nasty surprises won’t destroy your holiday. contact us Please direct any enquiries to Darren at the Cha Am Pub (see ad below), or you can of course also contact us direct by email on info@ or any of our other contact methods shown on page 33.

“Look Twice And Save a Life”

the 1%ers - part 4 An 1%er / outlaw could care less if he goes to jail, particularly if he is prospecting. If you make him mad, he will get your attention at any cost. And they don’t care WHO you are, an ex-1%er, a cop, an attorney, a body builder or a CEO. It don’t matter to them how tough you are or think you are. If you have pissed them off there will be trouble. I want to stress again, it’s not likely it will ever happen to you unless you travel those circles or challenge them when they are present. But at least you now have some type of awareness on what to do or not to do, so you are in control of your own actions. It is not always a good idea to approach them even if you are just being friendly. Outlaws are very suspicious of an approach by a stranger. However, some can be very friendly provided you don’t ask questions about their “business”. Outlaws can also be a lot of fun to be around, and MAN can they party. Most clubs, including 1%er’s rarely give anyone any trouble unless they are provoked, you challenge them, or you show disrespect. I have acquired many outlaw/1%er friends over the years that are great guys and wouldn’t cause anyone any trouble as long as they or their brothers aren’t messed with. They are the kind of brothers you want beside you if the going gets tough. Once club members consider you a good friend they will try and recruit you to join their club. The loyalty of brotherhood is the greatest strength of any club or friendship, and the club loyalty’s ALWAYS come first. And they won’t call the cops; they Take Care Of Business themselves. (You may see that on a patch that some earn.) In fact, history shows that outlaws or 1%er’s are less likely to testify against each other than the Mafia is. Not to mention they are certainly a special breed, and the brotherhood is as tight or tighter than any Mafia. 1%er’s have a death code for snitches, if you snitch against the club you will be hunted down. 1%er’s are so successful at doing this just recently after a federal agent had infiltrated one of the “Big Four” clubs and gave the feds all the incriminating evidence of murder and drug running conducted by

the elite portion of that club. He then committed suicide knowing they would find him at any cost and torture him to death. “Riding clubs” are, for the most part, the new kids on the block and no matter what anyone thinks, the 1%er’s/outlaws will always be here, even when or if the riding craze is over. The greatest law enforcement in the world has had little effect on this type of organization,

so you can do little but try and work things out and co-exist peacefully. I think we can ALL co-exist if we keep doing what we are doing. Making smart choices and having friends from all types of clubs. I know there are plenty of “Rights” arguments and debate in what I have written, but what you have read here is very real like it or not. We all have at least one thing in common, “Motorcycles” not to mention close friends! I encourage you all to enjoy this lifestyle by being knowledgeable of it. Learn and realize how dangerous this outlaw organization can be at times. This article has only scratched the surface in regard to the lifestyle or information that is available. And much information is only available when you live in that world.

Eat in or Takeaway 081 455 5298 Capricorn Dec 22 - Jan 19 Take heart: There are people with bigger problems than yours, and acting like you care about them will get you laid. Aquarius Jan 20 – Feb 18 You said you’d never forget all the little people’s help along the way, but since the fame and riches you’ve not thought about those midgets once. Pisces Feb 19 – Mar 20 Were it officially sanctioned, judged by an impartial panel, and taking place somewhere other than your kitchen late at night,† you’d shatter all existing hot dog eating records. Aries Mar 21 – Apr 20 Turns out it’s not your relationship with your Dad that’s been eating you up inside, but rather a three-foot long parasite lodged below your kidney.

Taurus Apr 21 – May 21 It takes a real man to admit when he’s made a mistake. However, now that you’re a woman, you can blame the sex-change operation on someone else. Gemini May 22 – June 21 Due to its high incidence of hijinx, tomfoolery, and puns, you’ll finally decide to stop answering doors during knock-knock jokes. Cancer Jun 22 – Jul 22 The stars, in their infinite wisdom, indicate that the cute blonde you’ve been pointing them out to couldn’t be more bored if she tried. Leo Jul 23 – Aug 22 You’ll continue to grow as a human being this week, much to the relief of all those geneticists.

Virgo Aug 23 – Sep 22 Home is where the heart is. Specifically, beneath the floorboards of the common room. Libra Sep 23 – Oct 23 Every day on Earth is like a beautiful gift from God, which is thoughtful and all, but you’d probably prefer something you can actually use. Scorpio Oct 24 – Nov 21 Juggling three young children isn’t easy for any mother, but then, that’s why you start with tennis balls and bowling pins first. Sagittarius Nov 22 – Dec 21 Nothing will be what it seems this week, especially breakfast sausages.

Black armbands made mandatory for all Premiership kits

COMMEMORATIVE armbands worn by grieving Premier League footballers will become a permanent part of official kits, under new FIFA rules. The black sashes will be sewn into a sleeve of each player’s shirt, in an acknowledgment of modern footballers’ griefaholic tendencies. Soccer pundit Wayne Hayes said: “Historically, the black bands were only worn when key players from a club passed on or to mark the anniversary of something that has adversely affected football. “But today’s footballers are like Victorians when it comes to mourning. They’ll pop on a sash if the club’s drinks machine runs out of soup, or if the manager’s car fails its MOT.” Further to the new regulations, clubs wishing to mark especially sad occasions such as a player’s cousin’s stick insect’s death will be invited to wear an additional arm band. Teams marking an actual human death will be expected to mask their goalkeeper in a

floor-lenth black veil without eye-holes. There will also be an extension to the traditional minute’s silence with the crowd expected to stay silent for the entire match, a move welcomed by prominent players such as John Terry and Ashley Cole. This measure has been trialled successfully at both Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium and Wigan’s DW Stadium, although critics of the move have claimed that neither of these grounds have true representations of ‘proper’ football fans.

The compulsory armbands are not the only change introduced to appease the Premiership’s appetite for melancholia. The music allowed to be played in the stadiums will be limited to John Lennon’s Imagine or anything by James Blunt, in an effort to avoid rousing the crowd, and the half time pie will be replaced by a buffet of cold cuts covered in cling film.
