DRYING UP? the annual water problem; residents urged to save water

HUA HIN THAILAND As the relentless hot, dry weather continues, the likelihood of severe water shortages in the months ahead is worse than normal, according to concerned officials. At the end of last month, water levels in the Pran Buri Dam had fallen to their lowest in 30 years, according to Paiboon Yongpradit, director of the Pran Buri water supply project, who claims the dam, the main source of tap water to the province, had just 132m cubic meters of usable water, down from an average low point of 460m cubic meters. Hua Hin deputy mayor Athikhun Butying has urged residents to save water and prepare for shortages in March and April, expected to be the driest for several years. Already some areas have seen their water shut off periodically, and the fears are that when the public supplies are not sufficient, that even the trucked in water will not be enough, so conserving water now is thought to be essential in all areas. Work is being carried out on pipework to improve the situation, but this is long term work not expected to be completed for at least another year or possibly two, connecting to another reservoir in Petchaburi. The water infrastructure in Hua Hin has long been a problem, and has been exacerbated by the continuing growth of the town, leading to a situation where the supplies are diminishing as the demand rapidly increases. So think twice before watering your garden or washing your car, and try to conserve the valuable resources we have - every little helps.

WWW.THAIPROPERTYDIRECT.COM Property and Lifestyle Check us out English Movies At Market Village!

HUA HIN THAILAND It has just come to the notice of AWOL that the Major Cineplex in Market Village is running some of their movies in English, apparently in a trial to test how popular they are. Already been and gone are ‘Meet The Parents 3” and “The Green Hornet” and unfortunately movie information for next week is not available at press time, but the trial is apparently continuing throughout February. While we would like to claim some small part in this happening with the petition and stories we ran on the issue in July to September 2009, we don’t believe this is connected, but it is a welcome step. One small criticism is that there has been little effort to publicise the trial, and as noted at the beginning of this article AWOL only stumbled on it by chance. However, we encourage anyone who enjoys watching films in a cinema to go along and show the ciema that there is indeed demand for English soundtrack films in Hua Hin. We will endeavour to find out the screening times a week in advance for the next issue of AWOL. For more immediate information go to either or

DEAR AWOL, I am writing to you to inform readers about a campaign for fairness, justice and equality for all British state pensioners. All people contribute towards the National Insurance scheme under exactly the same rules. All people qualify for their state pension under exactly the same rules, based on years of NI contributions. When it comes time to pay the state pension different rules are applied depending on where you happen to live. If you live in the UK and in 40 overseas countries, your state pension is uprated for inflation each year. If you live in mainly Commonwealth countries and others like Thailand

SEND YOUR LETTERS TO SUBMISSIONS@AWOLONLINE.NET your state pension is frozen at the rate at which it is first paid, or as at the date of migration. This means that over time the real purchasing power of the state pension in Commonwealth countries declines over the years, so that after, say, 25 years, it may be about a quarter of the current pension level. To rectify this problem it would cost less than 1% of the total state pension bill. Apparently there is an unwritten cross political party agreement not to fix this problem. Pensioners who have chosen to go overseas to be with their children and grand children in retirement in Commonwealth countries are penalised for doing so, or disouraged from seeing their children and

grandchildren again. Overseas pensioners have been fighting this discrimination, based on country of residence, for over 25 years. Please join in the campaign by visiting http://38degrees.uservoice. com/forums/78585-campaignsuggestions/suggestions/1485145fairness-justice-and-equality-forall-british-sta?ref=title and for more information visit http://www. Thank you, Clifric, Hua Hin. AWOL SAYS: Disgraceful unfairness from the British authorities; we will be adding our signatures to the campaign and hope our readers will too..

chicago, usa Woman gives birth to own grandson A 61-year-old lady in Chicago has given birth to her own grandson. Kristine Casey offered to be a surrogate for her daughter Sara Connell after she found herself unable to have children of her own. The baby boy, who has been called Finnean, was born at a hospital in Chicago, Illnois. Finnean’s biological parents are Mr and Mrs Connell. However he was delivered by his grandmother, Mrs Casey. Mrs Casey, a mother-of-three who last gave birth 30 years ago, said she was grateful to be able to help her daughter. “The three of the happiest days of my life were giving birth to my daughters,” she said, “and I thought I could choose to do this for someone

I love.” Mrs Casey underwent numerous tests to evaluate her medical and psychological condition, as specified by Illinois law on surrogate births. She fell pregnant after a second course of IVF treatment and gave birth to Finnean after 39 weeks. Mrs Connell, a 35-year-old lecturer, admitted that she could not contain her emotion when her son was born. “I lost it,” she said. “It’s such a miracle.” She had also tried IVF treatment, but had delivered stillborn twins, and later suffered a miscarriage. pattaya, thailand 46-hour Thai smooch is longest kiss A determined Thai couple have locked lips for 46 hours, 24 minutes and nine seconds to celebrate Valentine’s Day in the beach resort

town of Pattaya, Thailand, emerging victorious after a “kissathon” organisers claim marked the longest recorded smooch in history. The previous record of just over 32 hours was set in 2009 by a couple in Germany, according to Guinness World Records, whose officials will have to verify the latest milestone for it to become official. Fourteen couples kicked off the contest at 6am on Sunday. By Monday afternoon, half had already beaten the record and were still puckering up on the white-marble corridor of an oceanside shopping centre in Pattaya. Passing tourists gawked, smiled and snapped pictures with glowing mobile phones behind a red rope.

Do you wonder why we say certain things, or what they really mean? Each week we will examine a different word or phrase and tell you how it came about. This week it is.. Fell off the back of a lorry/truck A euphemism for ‘acquired illegally’. When anyone accounts for their possession of an article by saying it ‘fell off the back of a truck’ or ‘fell off the back of a lorry’, they may be assumed not to be its legal owner - i.e. it is stolen. ‘Lorry’ is the British version; in the USA and Australia things fall from trucks. This coy language, which feigns innocence but actually emphasizes illegality by using a phrase that is reserved for illegal dealing, is similar to The Godfather’s ‘an offer he can’t refuse’. Others that relate specifically to stolen goods are the ‘five finger discount’ and ‘I got it from a man in a pub’. Had ‘air quotes’ been in use at the time they might well have been called on when this phrase was first spoken. The earliest printed versions of ‘fell off the back of a lorry’ come surprisingly late - like this early example from The Times, 1968: “The suggestion of the finder, a casual motorist, that the records ‘must have fallen off the back of a lorry’.” There are many anecdotal reports of the phrase in the UK from much earlier than that, and it is likely to date back to at least WWII. It’s just the sort of language that the ‘wide-boys’ or ‘flash Harrys’ who peddled illegal goods during and after WWII would have used. These were exemplified in plays and films by the actors George Cole, Sid James, etc. I’m sure a thorough scan of the scripts of the post-war Ealing comedies would throw up a pre-1968 example. Versions of the ‘truck’ phrase from both Australia and the USA predate the English examples by many years. The earliest that can be found is from the official record of debates in the Australian House of Representatives Hansard, 1928:

Tel: 032 516587 Soi 90, Phetkasem Rd, Hua Hin

“We heard, through something that had fallen off the back of a truck onto a reporter’s table.” In the USA the expression is found just a few years later - as in this example from The Tuscaloosa News, February 1937: Many transients in Manhattan are constantly being trimmed by suave ‘chauffeurs’ in light delivery trucks who whisper confidentially that there are some bolts of cloth in the rear seat which fell off the back of a truck. The meaning seems to have changed slightly since the phrase was coined. Almost all of the early references cite it as being used as patter in a scam to sell the unwary shoddy goods. The current usage is as a reference to a straightforward ‘nudge, nudge/I won’t tell if you won’t’ sale of stolen or smuggled goods.

A nostalgic word about lorries. Trucks are now travelling the world and, in the same way that the voracious American Grey Squirrel has overwhelmed the retiring European Red Squirrel, they are, on the road and in the dictionary, becoming dominant. The older generation in the UK is holding out and will have no truck with ‘truck’ but, as time goes by, lorries will turn into trucks, just as charabancs turned into coaches.

Thailand foreign tourist arrivals up 11.6% in Jan BANGKOK - THAILAND foreign tourist arrivals rose more than 11 per cent in January from a year earlier to 1.79 million, according to Thailand’s tourism ministry’s website. The country managed to lure foreign tourists after a slump in arrivals during political unrest in Bangkok in April and May last year. The Bank of Thailand said the industry, which accounts for about 6 per cent of the country’s GDP, had recovered since the second half of 2010, at a faster rate than was expected. In 2010, foreign arrivals to the ‘Land

of Smiles’ rose 12 per cent to 15.9 million. Of that 51 per cent are from East Asia, led by Malaysia, China and Japan, 27 per cent from Europe and 5 per cent from North and South America, it said. (Reuters) Fans riot after Deftones cancel BANGKOK show Angry concertgoers hurled chairs and broke windows after the Grammy-winning American rock band the Deftones called off their show at a Bangkok stadium claiming the arena’s electrics were unsafe. Tuesday’s concert at the Thunderdome arena was meant

to start at 8p.m., but organizers announced at around 9:30p.m. that the show was canceled, prompting an angry outburst by some fans who were waiting outside. A few hundred fans “started throwing bottles at the stadium building, breaking windows and vandalizing tents and beer booths outside the venue. Early Wednesday, the Deftones posted an apology on their website and Facebook page, blaming the cancellation on “local power issues that threatened the safety of the band and their fans”. the awol pool ladder

A new individuals only pool competition is being introduced to the Hua Hin area by AWOL. Sign up for free at www.freeonlineleague. com/myleague/awolpoolladder - you will be contacted when the ladder is ready to start, planned to be when enough players sign up. The idea of the ladder is to provide all levels of pool players the opportunity to play over a longer period of games than the team leagues allow, thus giving a better chance to both improve and enjoy a longer stint at the table. The ladder concept allows players to find their own level and after a short time means they will generally play against others of a similar standard, but with the chance to play better players to learn from and hopefully beat sometimes! Once the ladder is established a knockout competition will also be introduced. If you are having any problems accessing or signing on to the website or for more information please email info@awolonline. net. More details next week. Go to myleague/awolpoolladder to sign up now!

(all times Thailand)

Sunday, 20 February 2011 West Brom v Wolverhampton, 19:00 Another vital game in the relegation scrap, as our back page star, Roy Hodgson, takes charge for his first game at his new club. Added spice to this is that it is a very local derby and we have a feeling that Wolves can nick it. Wednesday, 23 February 2011 Blackpool v Tottenham, 03:00 A win for Spurs here would see them in the top 3, while Blackpool are slipping ever closer to the bottom 3. Still this is a tough one to predict, as Holloway’s side have a fighting spirit, while Spurs may suffer a hangover from their Champions League heroics. A surprising draw then. Thursday, 24 February 2011 Arsenal v Stoke, 02:45 The Gunners are currently looking like the only realistic challengers to Manchester United for the title, but this is the sort of game that they frequently fail to perform in, normally due to the physical nature of the opposition. Stoke are that but there is more to them as well and they will be looking to expose the frailties in Arsenal’s back line at set pieces. Shock away win. FA CUP FIXTURES Round 4 replays Saturday, 19 February 2011 Chelsea v Everton, 19:30 The holders to be dumped out in what is likely to be a feisty game. Sunday, 20 February 2011 Manchester City v Notts County, 21:00 A big pay day for the away side but no more than that - home win. Round 5 Saturday, 19 February 2011 Birmingham v Sheff Wed, 22:00 A huge game for the away side who are struggling in League 1, and with Birmingham inconsistent there is a chance of an upset. Draw here and Wednesday to win the replay. Stoke v Brighton, 22:00 This should be the end of the Cup for the Seagulls because Stoke will see this as a good opportunity to have a sniff at silverware. Home win. Sunday, 20 February 2011 Man Utd v Crawley Town, 00:15 A dream tie for non-leaguers Crawley but surely also the end of their cup run? Maybe but stranger things have happened - away win. Fulham v Bolton/Wigan, 22:00 We think Fulham can overcome whichever side they face (result unknown at press time).

Leyton Orient v Arsenal, 23:30 Wenger needs to take this one seriously but his frequent disrespect for the competition by fielding weaker sides is likely to be repeated here. They will have played a lot of football in the preceding week or so, and we think another shock is on the cards. Tuesday, 22 February 2011 West Ham v Burnley, 03:00 The Hammers have been a cup side this season and we expect them to overcome Burnley in a very tight contest.

Thursday, 3 March 2011 Notts County/ Man City v Aston Villa, 02:45 Assuming our earlier prediction is correct this is likely to be needing a replay, and we think Villa will win that if so.

Wednesday, 2 March 2011 Everton/Chelsea v Reading, 02:30 Likely to be a home win whoever is playing, without intending any disrespect to Reading.

roy’s relegation ‘rant’ I don’t want to discuss relegation, or any other words with an R in them, insists Hodgson

birmingham, england

Newly appointed West Brom boss Roy Hodson has confirmed that he does not wish to talk about relegation, or any other phrases with an R in them, such as ‘drop zone’ and ‘Premier League trap door’. Hodgson revealed that his decision to join the Premier League strugglers was a difficult one, given the prominent R in their name, but he is confident he can oversee a “volteface” in the club’s fortunes, which is a phrase meaning ‘reversal’. He told the press conference, “People will say I’ve taken the wong job, what with my new team being the only team in the pwemier league with a such a pwominent R, but I’m sure I can handle it as long as I keep focussing on the opposition, and weferwing to us as the ‘Baggies’.” “I always found the Hawthorns a

tough place to come, especially without mentioning the team that plays here, so it’s nice not to have to wowwy about that away fixture any more.” Hodgson faced a number of tough questions from the gathered reporters, despite it being his first

day in the job, with one asking, “Do you think the club’s nickname should revert to ‘The Throstles?”, followed by “Are you considering bringing Bryan Robson into the coaching team?”. “Any chance of a return for Roman Bednár?” was from the Post reporter, while another queried ”What are the chances that at the end of the season you will release Steven Reid?” “Or Chris Brunt?”questioned a second. “Yeah, that’s a good one! Will you release Chris Brunt?” enquired a third. Hodgson was heard whispering to his assistant “Are they wibbing me?” at which point the press conference ended with uncontrollable laughter.
