FORMER STONE BREWMASTER FEELING AT HOME ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE COUNTRY BY BRANDON HERNÁNDEZ

T

he path that led Mitch Steele to his present space and time is both long and unorthodox. His 31-year brewing career started at a modest, 15-barrel brewpub in the Bay Area where he spent four years learning the ropes before making an interstellar leap, signing on with Anheuser-Busch. Steele spent 14 years in different positions where he relocated several times in order, honing his skills and taking on various management positions along the way, including heading new product development from AB’s St. Louis facility in the late nineties. By 2006, he had ascended to the role of assistant brewmaster, an enviable and comfortable station. And that’s when everything changed. On a whim, he applied to a head brewer job posting advertised by Escondido’s Stone Brewing… and got the job. Such was his admiration for Stone’s beers and bold approach that he accepted it and spent a decade managing brewing operations as the company went from 45,000 barrels per year to nearly 400,000, with locations in California, Virginia, and Berlin, Germany. And that’s when everything changed again, with Steele departing Stone to be a co-founding brewmaster with Atlanta-based startup New Realm Brewing. Now that he’s been there and acclimated to the East Coast, we felt it was a good time to catch up with the well-traveled vet… over several beers, of course.

WHAT LED YOU TO LEAVE A HIGH-PROFILE POSITION AS BREWMASTER AT ONE OF THE 10 LARGEST CRAFT BREWERIES IN THE COUNTRY TO TAKE A CHANCE ON A BRAND-NEW VENTURE? I think after 10 years at Stone, part of me was ready for a change. I loved my time at Stone and wasn’t at all looking to leave, but [New Realm co-founders] Carey Falcone and Bob Powers came knocking with a fascinating concept that I knew would present new challenges and new experiences. After a long time pondering it, I decided to go for it. Change is scary, but I’ve never regretted making that decision. Though I do miss everyone at Stone tremendously, I’m very grateful that we are all still friends and that they even asked me to brew a collaboration beer with them this year!

WHAT WERE SOME OF THE MOST CHALLENGING AND REWARDING PARTS OF BUILDING NEW REALM FROM THE GROUND UP? Designing a brewery that could produce 20,000 barrels in a 10,000-square-foot space was tough, but it was fun to lay it out and work with everyone involved to make sure the process flow made sense. If you haven’t built a brewery before, you quickly realize how much you don’t know. It was very intimidating for me, but ultimately very satisfying that we figured it out and made mostly good decisions. I wanted a brewery that could brew any style of beer. And for the first time, I have a brewery that doesn’t filter its beer. I love how that has positively impacted hop flavor and aroma retention in our beers, and they are plenty clear when they need to be! We brewed a lot of different recipes last year, and we have a five-barrel pilot system that allows everyone on the brewing team to get creative, so we always try to have a really great and varied selection of beers on tap. It’s been really cool for me to be able to brew such a wide range of beers and have an enthusiastic response. It’s been a long time since I could do that… like, forever. This is the first brewery I’ve ever worked at where no beer style is off the table.

WHAT ARE THE NEW REALM VENUES LIKE AND WHAT ARE THE CHANCES OF BUMPING INTO YOU AT ONE OF THEM?

16

JUNE 2019

Our original location in Atlanta has a 20,000-square-foot footprint in which 10,000 square feet are dedicated to the production brewing operation. We’ve built additional levels on the restaurant side, so they have a lot more square footage, including the main dining room, two private event rooms, a rooftop bar with a panoramic view of the Atlanta skyline, and a ground level patio and beer garden. The location is on the Atlanta Beltline — a walking, jogging, and biking path that eventually will encircle the entire city — in the heart of Atlanta’s residential area bordering the Old Fourth Ward, Poncey Highlands, and Inman Park neighborhoods. This area is a hotbed of great restaurants and bars, and it’s really cool for us to be part of it. We offer tours, mostly on weekends, so I may not be around, but we have public-accessible catwalks that go out over the brewery our guests can check out any time. Our Virginia Beach location opened with just a taproom and a large outdoor area, but we’ve since added an event space, lots of tables and chairs, and the kitchen to become a full-service restaurant. The brewery operates in a 50,000-squarefoot space, so there is a lot of room to expand.

TELL US ABOUT THE ACQUISITION AND FUTURE OF THE VIRGINIA BEACH LOCATION. With the Virginia Beach location, we were very fortunate to be able to take a bad, sad situation and make something positive out of it. We had just started getting concerned about overall capacity in Atlanta, and had begun talking about building a production facility somewhere, when Green Flash Brewing’s Virginia Beach brewery closed up and went on the auction block. Our ownership looks at things very long term, and they recognized this as a great opportunity and made a strong, successful effort to get this brewery for us. And we were able to keep on some of the old brewing team, which makes it extra special. It’s a beautiful brewery with almost brand new equipment and an eventual capacity of 100,000 barrels per year. We’ve shifted a lot of our core production to Virginia Beach, which leaves us even more opportunity to get innovative in Atlanta. It’s been a great thing for us.

ATLANTA AND VIRGINIA BEACH ARE FAR AWAY. HOW ARE YOU SPLITTING TIME BETWEEN COASTS? I’m commuting to the East Coast from San Diego every week. It’s challenging but manageable. My family has been great throughout this. I’m fortunate that I’m able to go home most weekends. I promised my daughter I wouldn’t move the family until she graduated high school, and that will happen this month.

WHAT DO YOU MISS ABOUT THE SAN DIEGO BEER SCENE? I miss everything about the San Diego beer scene. I lived 10 years of my life as a San Diego brewer and absolutely loved it. The people are great, the beers we drink in San Diego are great, and the camaraderie is amazing. The scene is just unique and fantastic. And it’s been neat to watch things expand into Orange County, Los Angeles, and even my little town of Temecula. There is so much great beer in SoCal and so many really good people in the business. I miss it and will continue to miss it tremendously. I love it when people from San Diego come here to visit. And when I am home, I try to visit my friends in the business.

WHAT IS THE BEER SCENE LIKE BACK EAST AND ARE THERE PARALLELS TO YOUR OLD STOMPING GROUNDS?

The camaraderie is exactly the same. That’s what’s so great about craft beer. We made lots of visits to other brewers in Atlanta when we were designing our place, and just like anywhere, made many good friends very quickly. We got a lot of help from several brewers while working through design issues and permitting issues, and it’s been fun to become part of the scene. Same thing in Virginia Beach, though our head brewer Evan Chamberlain had worked there for a while and already knew everyone. It’s fun to be part of so many different brewing scenes. Atlanta has got a longstanding, passionate beer culture that hardly anyone outside the city seemed to know much about. There are some truly worldclass beer bars and breweries in the Atlanta metro area, and now that laws are changing for the better in Georgia, the scene is starting to explode. It’s a very exciting time and there are some amazing beers being brewed here. The Virginia Beach area is starting to take off, as well. It’s actually a very large metropolitan area, but also spread out. But the beer scene in Virginia is cool. The brewers in our area are putting out some really great beers, and there’s room for more.

WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF AND NEW REALM HEADING IN THE FUTURE? Oh boy, who has a crystal ball? I think we want to be recognized as being a top-quality and innovative brewery in the Southeast, a destination spot for visitors and a perpetual favorite spot for locals. But what path gets us there is so hard to say, as things change very quickly. If all goes well, we’d like to open up a couple more brewery restaurants in other areas of the Southeast, but everything has to be just right, and we just don’t know where those might end up. We’re trying to be patient and look for opportunities while building our existing businesses. We want to be very local. For example, our plan is to only sell our beer in a state where we have an operating brewery, and that means Georgia, and the Hampton Roads and Williamsburg regions in Virginia. We’re taking a patient approach and will expand brewing and distribution only when and if the time is right, but we have no desire to go national or even up and down the East Coast. The Southeast is where we are putting our focus. •

NEW BEERS FOR A NEW REALM A RUNDOWN OF NEW REALM BREWING’S CORE AND MOST OFT-AVAILABLE BREWS WITH DESCRIPTIONS FROM THEIR CREATOR.

Euphonia Pilsner: An all-German malt traditional North German—i.e., bitter—version, with Hersbrucker and Huell Melon hops. This is a beer I’ve wanted to make for a long time and the brewing team really loves it. Hoplandia IPA: It’s a West Coast IPA, meaning about 70 IBU (international bittering units), 7.3% ABV (alcohol by volume), dry, bitter and dry-hopped with a great hop combination: Centennial and Simcoe. This is my go-to, everyday beer. I took a lot of what I learned at Stone to put this beer together without copying anything I did there. Hoptropolis IPA: A more modern version of an IPA with Citra, Mosaic, Azacca and Loral hops, so the hop flavor has tropical elements like pineapple and mango. It’s lower-IBU (50), a bit lower in ABV (6.5%) and fits right in with the kind of IPA that craft beer drinkers in Atlanta seem to really like. Hazy Like A Fox IPA: This is our New England-style IPA. We use lots of flaked grains, plus El Dorado and Azacca hops in two dry hop sessions. It’s got a great juicy character and is really delicious. United Craft Lager: A recently released American-style lager that’s incredibly sessionableslash-crushable, and brewed with three malts and four hops. Kikimora: An Imperial IPA that is in distribution but draft-only, 8.5% ABV and about 100 IBU with lots of Citra and Mosaic. Unexpected Turbulence: A hazy pale ale with plenty of Citra hops. Belga Rose: A lower-ABV Belgian ale with hibiscus, rose hips and orange peel. It’s a delightful summertime beer and the bright pink color gives it a really cool appearance. Munich Dunkel: This is almost always our best-selling beer in Virginia Beach, which is a very pleasant surprise! We do a German hefeweizen that falls into the same camp as the Dunkel and is very popular at our restaurant. Commissioner: A Belgian singel that was the first beer we brewed to commission the brewing and packaging equipment. It’s our most popular beer in the Atlanta restaurant, so we’ll keep making it! Kettle Sours: We have a rotating series that we are just starting to put into cans. We’ve done Lemon Pucker, a Berliner weisse with lemon and Lemondrop hops; a Key Lime Gose; Cranberry Orange Gose; Blueberry Berliner and several others. They are fun to brew. Brut IPA: Since that became a thing, we’ve brewed several, and now we’re at the point where we will try to always have one on tap. Other Brut Beers: We’re also brewing some brut beers that aren’t IPAs, and those have been interesting. We often add some fruit purée to get a very dry but intensely fruity beer.

BEER IN THE HEADLIGHTS

CCBA, SDBG, & Thee Imagine, if you will, this scene: A brewer is toiling away on a rich, high gravity stout when suddenly inspiration strikes. She proceeds to dump absurd amounts of coffee beans into the mix, hoping to imbue those roasty and fruity tones into the brew. It smells amazing! In fact, she’s so distracted by the heavenly

aromas wafting about that she scarcely notices the jackbooted ABC agents crashing through the brewery door with guns drawn. They storm toward her, barking to set down the Mostra bag and step away from the tank. Why, you might ask? Because in this shadow dimension the California Craft Brewers Association (CCBA) does not exist and coffee stouts are now illegal. (The Twilight Zone theme song should probably auto-play here whenever print media finally has the technological means to do so.)

20

JUNE 2019

As preposterous as that scenario sounds, there is a sliver of reality to it. Back in 2011, Senate Bill 39 (Padilla) was introduced to outlaw alcoholic beverages adding caffeine as a separate ingredient. Its intention was to curtail things like Four Loko, which was basically a way of making PCP commercially available in eight fun, fruity flavors. That seems like a sensible enough legislative agenda until you consider that any loose verbiage in such a law could have easily impacted the burgeoning pastry stout culture. This is where the ever-vigilant CCBA came in. The CCBA is a state-wide trade organization, advocating for the legislative needs of the 600+ dues-paying breweries they currently represent. This can take many forms, but their primary activity is tracking any ongoing legislation that could potentially impact the craft brewing industry in the short or long term. Whether a bill requires opposition, support, or a bit of protective tweaking, they serve as a megaphone for the breweries it will impact. A considerable volume of this work is seeking ways to empower the industry. As illustrated earlier, this can be as simple as advocating for the types of ingredients brewers are allowed to add (or when in the brewing process they are permitted to add them), but often it’s contending with actual business practices. In the 2015 legislative session CCBA championed Assembly Bill (AB) 893 (Stone) as it would eliminate the requirement by the ABC to receive their approval prior to releasing a new beer label, favoring a basic registration process instead. This took a process that could often

CCBA members in Sacramento

a staunch advocate for the emotional growth that accompanies a DUI conviction, most would say the offer sounds downright neighborly. The rub is that it makes it totally legal to exclusively ferry from manufacturer-selected establishments, not to mention it’s a service that smaller businesses could ill afford to provide. Legally hinky incentive, meet customer. In the face of such challenges, the CCBA often needs a bit more muscle behind its hustle. A megaphone only has utility when there’s someone sufficiently motivated to yell into it, after all. It happens that there’s few better bullies for that pulpit than our own San Diego Brewers Guild (SDBG). To the extent that the SDBG is known to the general public at all, it’s most likely in its association with prominent festivals and the annual San Diego Beer Week. But for CCBA the guild is a conduit to a tremendous network of small business owners and concerned industry professionals. It can be a grassroots powerhouse when it needs to be. I tend to liken it to awakening Godzilla to battle various Kaiju, but feel free to supply your own less dorky comparison.

require days to weeks to complete, and trimmed it down to mere minutes. That likely won’t excite anyone beyond brewery owners at first blush, but consider the impact that one-off can releases have had on beer culture over the last few years and how this change has facilitated them. So, yes, CCBA is at least partly to blame for the unshakeable grip that FOMO has on your soul. Their heart was in the right place, I suppose. Though the CCBA sponsors an average of three to five bills in every annual legislative session, they more frequently drive to maintain a defensive posture. The State Capitol is understandably lousy with lobbyists, but the prominence is especially profound around the Governmental Organizational Committee. Its jurisdiction includes tobacco, alcohol, gambling, and basically anything fun. This is where parties like Anheuser-Busch, MillerCoors, large distributors, and other large corporate interests go to share PAC funds (along with all their 100% altruistic ideas on how to “improve” beer laws). Often it’s the bills that never see the light of day where CCBA has been the most engaged. Existing tied-house laws (i.e. state laws created to ensure retail outlets are not financially incentivized by alcohol manufacturers to either overserve customers or gain exclusivity over sales channels) do their part to keep egregious actions at bay, but there’s always plenty of devils lurking about in the details. For example, AB 711 (Low) created an exception to allow beer manufacturers to provide free or discounted rides home to consumers. Unless you’re

Summoning a deluge of concerned emails and phone calls to members of the Governmental Organizational Committee can certainly influence happenings, but it is something of a blunt tool. The long-term wins manifest when individuals are able to personalize the industry (along with reminding of the 54,000 jobs it provides to constituents). That is why SDBG President (and Burgeon Beer Co-Owner/President) Matthew Zirpolo participated in CCBA’s annual Day at the Capitol, where he, among nearly 40 other brewery owners, met with more than 60 legislators to discuss their pressing issues. Not only do these meetings forge new allies in the capitol, Zirpolo noted ripple effects from the effort as well. “The senator that I met with actually emailed me not too long afterwards about my opinion on one of the bills that was coming up,” said Zirpolo. “They took what I had to say to heart.” While it was comedically expeditious to portray the SDBG as CCBA’s Brute Squad, the reality is the CCBA is likewise a tremendous resource for the guild. Given CCBA’s exposure to issues that crop up across the entire state, they have, in a manner of speaking, seen it all. Maintaining open lines of communication helps San Diego avoid pitfalls other regions have fallen victim to, or provides new cautionary tales for other California breweries. This is why SDBG Executive Director Paige McWey Acers strives to keep updates from Sacramento top of mind for the guild. “They're aware of what the CCBA is doing... and how they can participate in protecting their livelihood and their business,” said McWey Acers. I’ll admit that the nascent fanfic author in me relishes conceptualizing a Breaking Bad-adjacent reality where Modern Times Beer becomes a ruthless kingpin in the illicit coffee stout trade. I could wring three to four seasons out of that premise, easy. Still, back in the real world, I am comforted to know the CCBA and SDBG are keeping that dystopian future and others like it at bay. ∆

PROHIBITCHIN’

The Lady of the Lab

Erika Raye of Mikkeller San Diego BY BETH DEMMON

M

ikkeller's portfolio is more stream of consciousness than flagship-driven: a mishmash of one-offs and constantly rotating varieties that appear one week and are gone by the next. Still, the revolving door approach has worked out well for the Danish-born roaming brewery, who settled in San Diego in 2015, and has continued the legacy of cranking out whatever strikes the brewing team’s fancy. But by late 2017, Mikkeller San Diego came knocking at Erika Raye’s door in search of someone to implement Quality Assurance and Quality Control (QA/QC) measures in the brewhouse. She was a natural choice; she worked in both the yeast and analytical labs at White Labs, and had dabbled in brewing at Intergalactic Brewing Company. Raye also earned a Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry from Alfred University in New York State and completed the UCSD extension program for brewing certification. On top of that, she served as the San Diego chapter leader of Pink Boots Society for two years, only handing over the gavel to Amy Spackman of Karl Strauss last month (while remaining an active member). Throughout our conversation over beers in Mikkeller's Miramar tasting room (her with a Raspberry Blush Berliner weisse with raspberry and coffee, and me with the California Dream Czech pilsner with ale yeast), I’m struck, and sometimes intimidated, by the incredibly technical vocabulary pouring out of Raye seemingly unconsciously. Her laboratory expertise is impressive for a veteran of the industry, but coming from someone who’s yet to hit age 30? I’m — pleasantly — blown away. “Everything that exists in terms of the QC program [at Mikkeller San Diego], I’ve built,” says Raye. As we walk through her lab, she gestures animatedly, pointing out every piece of equipment and rattling off its function. It’s clearly her baby, and she’s proud as hell of it. I ask her

26

about the paradox of her job: ensuring consistency in a brewery that, well, just doesn’t make the same beer a lot. “It’s weird, we are a speciality brewery. We brew at least one or two specialties every week,” she explains. “But if we do a special release, we’re still doing three or four batches of it. We’re still needing to have that consistency from batch to batch, even if it’s a small one.” Chasing consistency is just one facet of her day-to-day efforts as QA/ QC Coordinator. It’s a blend of science and art, or what she calls quantitative versus qualitative work. This is an especially important aspect to Mikkeller San Diego’s taste panels, which she orchestrates every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday at the brewery. Everyone in production is required to participate, from brewers to cellarman and a handful of office employees. Raye decides what the group will blindly taste, setting up triangle tests to ensure unbiased perceptive results for the beers they individually analyze and then discuss as a group. “Quantitative is actual numbers, and qualitative is more descriptive,” according to Raye. “The sensory portion of taste panel is definitely qualitative. Do you taste a certain off-flavor? How does this compare to that? Et cetera... then I also do the quantitative side. I monitor all the fermentation; I do tank readings every day and I have this whole tracking system for the yeast that I’ve created.” Yeast is a gigantic driver of Raye’s schedule, as it is for any person working in brewery QA/QC. Raye admits it’s also the one element in beer that most people tend to avoid, despite its importance in the brewing process. “The yeast is a really big part of it that a lot of people don’t understand, and they don’t realize how much it affects everything. Coming from

White Labs and coming from a science background, to me that was the first thing that I started here. We started tracking our yeast, writing down what we’re using, doing cell counts because that right there is just a huge thing that you can control that will make a difference.” Other QA/QC duties include creating Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for different teams, maintaining a beer archive, working with the brewers to continuously monitor and tweak brewing operations, pulling samples from tanks to do cell counts, gravity checks, pH checks, forced diacetyl testing… her list goes on. But there’s an excitement in Raye’s eyes as she describes her many responsibilities; clearly, there’s never a dull day for her in the lab. Raye’s enthusiasm for the craft is wildly refreshing, especially considering she didn’t get her start in beer. In college, a fortuitous field trip to a local winery’s quality control lab spawned her great revelation: a science degree didn’t necessarily have to end in the medical field, which was her initial plan. Raye remarks: “That was the first time I realized ‘Wow! This is really cool and this is something that I could do.’” After convincing the professor to let her tag along on the same field trip the next year — even though she was no longer enrolled in that class — she began reaching out to other local wineries to help take samples, run tests, or anything else their labs might need. But with graduation looming, Raye realized she needed a real job to forge a career in wine. A cousin in Temecula offered her a spot to crash for a few months, and that was that… or so she thought. “I didn’t realize how far away Temecula was from here,” she laughs. But when she caught wind of a friend of a friend opening a brewery,

she figured “fermentation is fermentation,” and sent a Facebook message to the aspiring brewery owner. It was Alex Van Horne and the brewery-to-be was Intergalactic. She recalls their first conversation. “He literally was like, 'I don’t know who you are but sure, come brew with me!’ He’s that type of person. I knew nothing about beer, but Alex was like, ‘I need labor and you want to learn,’ so we called me an intern… Wine is what got me interested, but when I discovered this beer scene happening in San Diego, I couldn’t say no to it.” It’s been six years since Raye’s accidental entry into craft beer, but she has no plans to leave. She chuckles as she remembers her grandfather’s Christmas card-slash-newsletter he sent to friends and family the year she started working at Intergalactic. “This one year it said, ‘Erika started working at a brewery! We think it’s a phase she’s going through and we have a feeling she’ll come back to wine in a couple of months.’” She smiles. “I don’t think it was a phase.” Professionally, Raye isn’t looking to leave Mikkeller San Diego anytime soon. “This was where I wanted to be when I started… now I’m here, creating my own program.” As a department of one, there’s plenty of room to grow should she decide to stay put. But she’s not discounting starting another QA/QC program from scratch now that she’s done it successfully. Either way, she’s sure about one thing. “I never want to be so high up that I’m not working in the lab.” It seems that for Raye, home is where the microscope is. The 28th Annual

SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA HOMEBREWERS FESTIVAL

President of the California Homebrewers Association Andy Carter

JUNE 2019

San Dimas’ dual hobbyists (?) Horse Thief Brewers Association

Orange County’s Meisters of the Brewniverse featured a broadsword on their taps Southern California Homebrewers Festival (SCHF) is a place where the beer flows like wine, where homebrewers instinctively flock like the salmon of Capistrano… I'm talkin' 'bout a little place called Vail Lake (near Temecula). SCHF operates as a private event put on by the California Homebrewers Association (CHA). All attendees pay a $10 membership fee to join CHA and then around $40 for a festival ticket. This funding allows the beer, mead, and cider to pour annually. I’d heard the stories from years past: one involving a frisbee-related broken arm, others of derrières ripping through sundamaged woven beach chairs, and always the beer and food-related fun. Upon the arrival of spring, my beer-ish friends would collectively tug my arm towards this event, and every year my resistance persisted, until now. I spent the morning of Friday, May 3 at home getting ready by filling and labeling growler after growler: Düsseldorf Altbier, Cream Ale, and a Barrel Fermented Lambic. Camping gear, ibuprofen, chewable antacids, three pounds of bacon, hipster fizzy waters, socks, and gutchies… check! After just over an hour driving, I joined a caravan of cars, RVs, trucks, and trailers overstuffed with kegs, E-Z UPs, full bars disassembled, and outdoor cooking equipment making their way into the grounds. I pulled up to the Mash Heads / QUAFF dual-brewing club area and pitched my tent. Fortunately, we enjoyed days in the upper 70s, with crisp, cool upper 40s at night (2018’s highs were in the upper 90s, while two years ago it was raining). After everybody got set up, I opened some refreshing Cream Ale to share with Mash Heads and QUAFF. Our amuse bouche: smoked fava beans, Fromager D’Affinois, Barber's 1833 Vintage Reserve Cheddar, lox, and assorted charcuterie. Off to the side, BBQ ribs were being prepared — some over charcoal, and more in a smoker. Our dinner included plenty of gourmet munchies, the aforementioned ribs, baked beans, Festival schedule… get on the bus or hoof it!

came the work of getting kegs situated and bars assembled in preparation for the festival (yes, the previous night was just a preamble).

Everybody was so busy eating, drinking, and cleaning up after dinner that we missed the Pro Brewing event with two handfuls of breweries pouring, including Wild Barrel from San Marcos.

The gates opened and a steady procession went to drink, eat, and be merry (in that unique order). A large, central festival tent hosted some educational seminars. I attended the advanced mead making seminar presented by Billy Beltz (Lost Cause Meadery) and Pete Bakulic (Mazer

As the sun was setting, it was time to head over to the Society of Barley Engineers’ Epic Bottle Share, a.k.a. Epic B.S. I quickly jammed a gallon of Lambic in my backpack and jumped on the school bus (with yellow duct tape over the word “school”) running circuit loops around the Vail Lake campground. Exiting the bus, I walked past a large table of folks all wearing the same hop-adorned shirts, their noses jammed into samples of brownish-colored beers. Here, the CHA was judging the Bragging Rights Only competition (aka BRO); every year a style is chosen and each club busts out their best (2019’s style was Wee Heavy). The winning club simply gets Bragging Rights Only. Historic winners of the BRO competition include Patrick Rue (The Bruery) and Julian Shrago (Beachwood BBQ & Brewing). I arrived at the Society of Barley Engineers’ Epic Bottle Share. The convex arcs of lights strung overhead played off the rosycheeked revelers and the cool, starry infinity above. The party was packed, humming with jovial banter and florid descriptions of beverages. Roaming around the scene were some old friends (and soon-to-be new friends) generously pouring special bottles. I tried but lost count of it all as the night stretched on. The cacophonous finale came in waves, as even bigger beers appeared, alongside homemade ‘shine, spirits, and sake from various Ball jars. Instinctively, and thankfully, floating feet guided me back to my home campsite, with my ability to operate tent flaps and sleeping bag intact. The next day started off with a hearty breakfast and much needed hydration. Then

Cup). With so many delicious, awardwinning meads pouring non-stop at their talk, it was no wonder the crowd packed that tent. In total, Southern California Homebrewers Festival 2019 consisted of more than 1,300 attendees, forty homebrewing clubs (including three first-timers), 538 taps, 738 kegs, and numerous bottles, cans, and growlers. Post-festival, the Mash Heads and QUAFF circled around a campfire to help lighten the load. Passed around was Lost Cause’s Zydeco Buzz, AleSmith’s Vietnamese Speedway, barrel-aged Barleywines, and Imperial Stouts. Needless to say, Sunday morning shone brightly, illuminating the previous night’s fireside carnage of empty bottles. It was time to clean those up, pull tent stakes from the earth, gather our belongings, and direct vehicles homeward. All I wanted was a hot shower and a plethora of fruits and veggies. If you’re interested in attending or participating in the 29th annual fest next year, simply visit with the many local clubs and wait until the details get announced around the beginning of next year. ‡
