• The #cheers4sarah campaign raised $13,825.90 (of a $9,000 - $10,000 goal) for the medical bills of Sarah Loza, daughter of homebrew club QUAFF member Miguel Loza Brown and Maribel Loza. Organized by member Nick Corona, and helped along by donated ingredients, the session IPA was brewed at Indian Joe in February. Two GoFundMe pages are still active for continuing donations: GoFundMe.com/Pray-For-Sarah; GoFundMe.com/Sarita039s-miracle. • The new Carmel Valley tasting room and kitchen by Mason Ale Works has been open since late May. Run by the 3 Local Brothers (3LB) hospitality group — which also operates The Barrel Room, Urge Gastropub, and Brother's Provisions — this Mason outpost features a large selection of spirits that make their way into beer cocktails. • Last summer, veteran Coronado Brewing Company (CBC) head brewer Ryan Brooks realized a longtime ambition, launching his own passion project, SouthNorte Beer, with the aim to celebrate the overlapping artisan beer cultures of Southern California and Baja. Since then, his beers

have been brewed at CBC’s Bay Park brewery (the owners of that facility also have a stake in SouthNorte) while Brooks and his team search for a base of operations. In late June, a partnership was announced between SouthNorte and Tijuana’s Telefonica Gastropark, which will allow Brooks to brew at the latter hospitality collective. This partnership makes SouthNorte the first independent American craft brewery to have a permanent brewery and tasting room presence in Mexico. It also provides Brooks a highprofile spot with epicurean fans on both sides of the border from which to operate and grow his business. SouthNorte and Telefonica expect to debut their first round of Tijuana-produced beers in late summer or early autumn. Meanwhile, large-scale production of the flagship beers in SouthNorte’s portfolio—Sea Señor Mexican-style lager, No Güey mango IPA and Agavamente agave-infused pilsner—will continue at CBC’s facility. • In the summer of 2016, Julian's Bailey BBQ brewpub closed down, but will re-open on July 4 as Julian Beer Co. It’s been a long road for one of local Continued on p.10

Continued from p. 8 beer’s elder statesmen, but Vince Marsaglia (co-founder of Pizza Port and Port Brewing/The Lost Abbey) along with his sons and brewer Matthew Pittman pooled their energy and elbow grease to revamp the property, which includes the 149-year-old Bailey house, a barn, and the 30-yearold main restaurant structure. According to Marsaglia, they all needed “serious work,” including demolition, repainting, installation of new plumbing, electrical, seating, and more. Additionally, contractors were hired to construct a cold-box connecting the bars in the kitchen and barn. The brewhouse was also upgraded to a five-barrel Premier Stainless system, with hopes of brewing 400 barrels annually. Julian Beer’s lineup includes the following: –– McCoy Bros. | American Ale, 4.7% ABV –– Anatomical Blonde | German-style Pilsner, 5% –– La Morena Fina | Barrel-aged Double Brown Ale, 8.3% –– Hillside Rendezvous | Saison with Sage, Rosemary & Cedar, 7.1% –– Jaz | Barrel-aged Saison with Cherries, 5% –– Fender’s | Barrel-aged Belgian-style Dark Strong Ale, 11% –– Howl | Barrel-aged Stout, 6% –– The Lonely Pioneer | IPA, 6.6% –– Five Oaks | Amber Ale, 6.1% –– JHBA | IPA, 6.6% A 5.9% hoppy red rye ale, 7.1% nitro stout and 4.8% spiced apple lager will also be available. Ingredients for the latter as well as Hillside Rendezvous were sourced locally, as are other ingredients procured from nearby farmers such as Star B Ranch and Hop Farm and Julian Ciderworks. Certain items are also grown on the business’ one-acre hillside (which can be rented for private events). • In late May, the South Bay Craft Coalition, a group comprising of members of National City’s local government, members of the National Continued on p.27 Top: Julian Beer Co. Summer Is In Session Bagby Beer's Sweet Ride Pilsner, a Great American Beer Festival gold medal winner

S

an Diego might be gray and gloomy, but summer – the unofficial beer and food fest season – is in full swing. For many of us summer means picnics, festivals, baseball, camping, beach days, and other fun activities that go hand in hand with day drinking. Summer is the perfect time for Session Beers. The Brewers Association’s 2018 Beer Guidelines, released in March, states, “Drinkability is key to a successful session beer. Beers exceeding 5.0% ABV (alcohol by volume) are not categorized as Session Beers.” However, delving into the history or, more aptly, histories, of Session Beers can be a bit nebulous. Germany has Schankbier (0.5% – 2.6%) and most of their Vollbiers (3.0% – 5.3%) that align with Session from an ABV standpoint. Style–wise, Germany has a lot of delicious Session Beers, such as Kölsch, Leichtbier, Berliner Weisse, Gose, HefeWeisse, Pilsners, Helles, and Radlers. Belgium has Table Beers (usually under 2.8%) and Table Saisons (3.5% – 5.0%), as well as some of the lower ABV Witbiers, Pales, and Singles that could be categorized as Session Beers. Ireland has Irish Reds and Dry Stouts and Scottish brewers make low ABV, caramel– forward beers sometimes sold as 60 Shilling (2.5% – 3.2%) and 70 Shilling (3.2% – 3.9%). English munitions workers during WWI were allotted two drinking sessions per day at 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. – 11 p.m. In order to remain sharp between the ears (read: coherent) during working hours, they drank beers between 3.0% – 4.0%. While a majority of men were at war, women, called Munitionettes, worked in these munitions factories and first started going to pubs. Astoundingly, the Session Beers at work law remained on the books until 1988. It might come as no surprise that a huge percentage of low ABV beers originated in England.

There are Cask–Strength Ales, Milds, Bitters, Browns, Smaller Porters, and even the modern Golden Ales, with plenty of examples of each style brewed to sessionstrength.

Session Beers – It’s The Law!

Immigrants brought Session Beers with them to the new world. Blondes, Cream Ales, Classic American Pilsners, Commodity Lagers, and even Session Pale Ales and IPAs became popular thirst quenching shift beers, as European traditions integrated into American culture. British purists will argue that Session Beers should always cap out at 4.0% ABV, while those using “session” as a marketing tool will push the ABV much higher. Brewers Association Guideline sticklers could also argue that session beers have a lower end range of 3.5% ABV and must mimic higher ABV styles; Ordinary Bitter and Berliner Weisse aren’t technically considered Session Beers by Guidelines. For our sake, since they’re generally under 5% ABV, we’re including these beers to describe Session Beers in San Diego. What these beers lack in booziness, they more than make up for in flavor and drinkability. It’s easy to see why Session Beers are one of the fastest growing markets right now, and why they are perfect anytime beers for you and your friends. The following list showcases the wide variety of Session Beers available around San Diego this summer. These beers are available pending brew schedules and production/ distribution levels. It’s always best to check if these beers are currently available. Given this huge list of 400+ Session Beers, we divided them into two categories: 4.0% ABV and below, and beers between 4.1% – 5.0%. Enjoy exploring. Cheers!

Utah has a state law that all packaged beer (bottle, cans, and kegs) can’t be above 4.0% ABV. The state considers anything above that alcohol level to be liquor. These “not-beers” over 4.0% are banned from grocery stores, convenience stores, and taverns (i.e. beer bars, clubs, lounges). This law stems from mixing politics and regulations with the Church of Latter Day Saints.

Angels of Airwaves: Danielle Stuht & Esthela Davila Two on-air beer personalities talk about their paths to beer, what they’d change about #SDbeer, and the challenges of beer journalism

By Beth Demmon You may not have known what they look like, but you know what their voices sound like. Sometimes it’s even more intimate than that. “Someone recognized my laugh,” says Esthela Davila, referring to the first time she was randomly identified at a brewery. “It freaked me out! But they bought me a beer, so that was nice.” Davila and Danielle Stuht are two of the many on-air personalities in the San Diego beer scene. However, Davila, a podcaster on San Diego BeerTalk Radio and promoter for PushPins Media (organizers of events like the Mission Valley Craft Beer & Food Festival) and Stuht, co-host of “Beer for Breakfast” on 91X with Karl Strauss brewmaster Paul Segura, are part of another small clique: women in craft beer media. Although they both arrived at the same destination, their paths into local beer reporting deviate wildly from each other. Stuht arrived to San Diego from New Mexico a decade ago with a preference for cocktails and indifference towards craft beer. All it took was one trip to Hamilton’s Tavern to change her mind.

an incredible amount of beer knowledge between them, they both confessed to succumbing to “imposter syndrome” on occasion. When Greg Homyak and Brian Beagle, the original hosts of San Diego BeerTalk Radio, asked Davila to join as the third permanent co-host, she wavered. I thought ‘I don’t know enough about beer to be on a beer show,” she admits. Stuht agrees. “I’ve had this conversation with Paul Segura before, when I wanted to go do the beer program at either SDSU or UCSD. I didn’t feel like I had any knowledge. He told me ‘you’re learning more on this show, from the best people in the business, than you’re going to learn in a classroom.’ But I do think that feeling comes with being a woman.” Even with the all-too-common pressure women tend to put on themselves (especially in male-dominated industries), Stuht and Davila have thrived. “People actually seem to like hearing what I have to say,” remarks Davila. Additionally, both recognize the importance of representation and their de

“Knowing how Hamilton’s is now, I can’t believe they didn’t just kick me out right then. I told the beertender I didn’t like beer and he said ‘I’ve got something for you.’ He puts a Delirium Tremens in front of me and that was it. It was over after that.” Davila got a taste for beer much sooner in life. Chuckling, she explains, “I’m Mexican! We drink beer.” Growing up in Logan Heights (but with family in Tijuana), she reminisces about partying south of the border in her teens, drinking what she describes as “horrible beer” until she spotted a Karl Strauss Red Trolley. Afterwards, she vowed never to drink “crap beer” again. “Okay… maybe at family barbecues,” she concedes. “But I always show up with my own little seperate cooler.” Both women have worked in radio before: Davila on a femaleforward podcast called “Ladies First” and Stuht on multiple radio shows both on mic as well as behind the scenes. But even with Esthela Davida at Oktoberfest with friends

facto positions as role models for the next generation. They name people like Laura Ulrich (Stone Brewing), Carli Smith (formerly Rock Bottom La Jolla, now at Bold Missy Brewery), Shannon Rogers (Burning Beard Brewing), and JoAnn Cornejo (Machete Beer House) as mentors and ardent supporters of other women in the San Diego scene.

“Somebody’s got to pay for something,” she admits. “There are a lot of things I wish we could talk about… but if not for those advertising dollars, I can’t have things like Beer for Breakfast.” Davila, on the other hand, has no such restrictions. “My show is the complete opposite. Our Patreons like that we’re honest about things.” But sometimes that honestly comes at a price. “I’ve had pushback from saying some stuff that people didn’t like. But it was my opinion; I stand by my opinion. If you don’t agree with it, that’s fine, but get your own show and then you can talk about it on your own show!”

“The thing that I’m seeing about beer versus any other community of women is the lack of cattiness and the lack of stepping on someone to get ahead,” says Stuht. “I’ve never been part of a group where you’re so embraced.” Even with support, it’s not always easy being a mouthpiece in an industry where opinions— despite their subjectivity—are as hotly contested as life-ordeath issues, or where our mere existence as women is still objectified in order to sell more beer. I asked both of them what they’d love to see change in the local industry, and despite agreement that San Diego is generally ahead of the curve, we all agree there’s still work to be done, by and for women.

Regardless of how they each handle controversial topics, each agreed that beer journalists have a responsibility to bring all sort of news to light in whatever ways we can—whether it be good reviews or bad scoops. But no matter what spin the stories take, it’s more than “just beer”. “Behind beer is people,” says Davila. “If you don’t care about the people, it’s nothing.”

“If you’re ‘that’ owner who’s going to hire someone because she’s a pretty face, at the very Danielle Stuht (second from left) with co-host Paul Segura and Dr. Bill Sysak and Chris White of Wild Barrel Brewing least put in the time and effort to give her the knowledge and back her with more than her pretty smile,” says Stuht. “Give her the extra ‘oomph’ so that she sounds like she knows what she’s talking about.”

When it comes to reporting, both Davila and Stuht try to stay on top of trending topics and breaking news. But because of their respective outlets, their approaches can vary quite a bit. Case in point: as part of a radio program that’s supported by advertising dollars, Stuht is obliged to dance around (and at times completely avoid) certain topics that would threaten the viability of Beer for Breakfast. City Chamber of Commerce, and various local business people held a half-day conference at Telefonica Gastro Park in Tijuana. The event was to inform a group of invited brewery owners and brewers from Tijuana, Ensenada, and Mexicali of the potential opportunities that now exist for establishing breweries and tasting rooms in National City. There is a desire to attract wine makers, too. Read more at WestCoasterSD.com, dated May 29. • Sales are up for light, sessionable beers. That’s not surprising given we are approaching summer, but the trend is even more pronounced this year. (You can see 400+ session beers starting on page 14.) San Diego’s brewers are crafting lots of pilsners, which gave Bitter Brothers’ head brewer Tyler Tucker the idea for a competition of that style, to be hosted by O’Brien’s Pub. On Saturday, May 19, dozens of drinkers ordered a six-taster flight and ranked their favorites from the board, without knowing which beer came from which brewery. In the end, Tucker’s Bitter Brothers Bill’s Pils, a Czech Pilsner, topped the leaderboard. In second place was Burning Beard’s Normcore, the West Coaster reader favorite of 2017. Rounding out the top three: Societe The Heiress. “We brewed the beer as close to style as we could, but also to a style that we want to drink,” said Tucker, who has also recently brewed at Coronado and Societe. “In my Societe day we spent a lot of time talking with Doug Hasker [of the Gordon Biersch brewpub] and I just listened, took notes, and it paid off.” Bill’s Pils features Pilsner malt, Saaz hops, and White Labs WLP830 German Lager Yeast. Beer in the Headlights

By Ian Cheesman

Fun Fact:

Carlsbad’s name was not created as an indictment on all people named Carl. Not that anyone would dispute that rationale, Carl. You know what you did. The origin stems from an early discovery that its native fresh-water supply was chemically similar to that found in some of the most renowned spas in the world. As a nod to this, the city was named after an international spa contemporary, the Bohemian city of Karlsbad. At this point you might be wondering why I’m burning some of my choicest cocktail party banter to open this column. Well, as a nod to this marginally interesting fact, I visited two Carlsbad breweries likewise trying to prove there is something special about the water out their way. (Admit it. I tied that all together way neater than you thought I would. I’m a little surprised I pulled it off myself.) It’s not unusual for the exterior of San Diego breweries to be somewhat nondescript. That’s business park living for ya. However, that necessarily

28

means that very subtle things can shift your first impression of them. For example, the aspect of Culver Beer Co. that grabbed my attention was the parking. Usually that would imply that parking was insufficient, but it wasn’t that. It was because several of the most convenient spots were claimed by small placards, each itemizing in miniscule print which business they were designated for. Despite my 20/20 vision and keen predatory instinct, I actually had to park to be close enough to confirm which set of spots were available to me. It’s no big deal really - I love being micromanaged as much as the next guy. Still, I couldn’t shake the feeling that I’d just driven into the middle of a really heated reality show-tier feud. God I hope someone gets slapped or a beer tossed in their face while I’m drinking here... The interior of Culver Brewing Co. doesn’t seem to revolve around any particular theme. There’s a few cartoon-y pictures on the wall paying homage to their flagship beers and a bit of whimsy on the scattered chalkboard walls, but that’s about the extent of it. However, it did manage to cultivate what so many other tasting rooms eagerly vie for: a true sense of neighborhood. It

was palpable in myriad subtle ways. When a kid was noted to be struggling with the popcorn machine, adjacent strangers were quick to assist. When a poodle entered the premises, patrons instinctively extended hands down from their barstools to offer scratches as if they were long acquainted. I’m sure their somewhat isolated geography helped foster this, but judging by how warmly I was greeted by patrons and staff alike on arrival, I’d say there’s something unique and special afoot here. Fully articulated theme or no, the space is readymade to enjoy beer in. I particularly enjoyed the string of booths they supplied, ideal for having a slightly more intimate experience with your crew. The more extroverted bar-side and counter options likewise assured you’d get in where you fit in. Once I landed on a stunning cement table with wood inlay to rest my beers upon, I embarked on my standard quest of breaking the will of my server with interminable taster flights. My first was Greenstone, a “New Zealand lager” with brilliant clarity, golden body, and robust nose of mango, cantaloupe, and crackery malts. The flavor is likewise a tremendous showcase for those NZ hops with bright meyer lemon and a gentle, yet bitter floral finish. However, that hoppiness cuts two ways. All that boisterous fruity character sacrifices some of the long-term drinkability I crave in a lager. As I progressed through my unwieldy flight, I kept revisiting a key thought: “Huh, that one was pretty good too.” That was particularly true of the Culver Irish Red. The traditional elements of crusty bread and toffee harmonized with its earthy and floral hop character. I was similarly charmed by Solar Derby Hazy IPA, whose pungent papaya and orange aromatics reminded me of Flintstones Vitamins. The full-bodied quaff presented a dynamic range of hop character, from fruity to pine, that offered an additional welcomed touch of bitterness to the mix. I thought for certain my favorite of the bunch would be the Bourbon Barrel Aged Imperial Stout because, well, bourbon. And it certainly was pleasing.

The potent notes of cocoa, espresso, dark fruits, and a little boozy heat from the sipper demonstrated richness and complexity without veering into pastry stout territory. However, I was most impressed by Purple Church Blackberry Tart. Both of my diehard readers will note that this is a significant departure for me. It just isn’t a style I gravitate toward. Still, it was impossible to not be charmed by its thick, resilient head, berry- and grain-forward aromatics, and a firm blackberry and raspberry fruitiness that was tart without becoming acetic. It’s probably in a tartness-tier that will underwhelm diehards, but for those that don’t enjoy drinking a pint of indigestion it’s a real treat. From there I Lyfted straight over to the Rouleur Brewing Company. And by “straight over,” I mean I took a needlessly circuitous route because this place is tough to land on. Even when letting Google take the wheel, it’s far too easy to fly past this joint. Not that any of this is Rouleur Brewing Company’s fault. The city is very prohibitive on the types of signage it allows (i.e. flags are a nono) and the approved brick-and-mortar signage reads “Craft Beer Taproom”. That barely serves the generic needs of the Brewery Igniter complex, let alone its occupants. But don’t worry, if you happen to miss the sign, you need only traverse an additional mile across two u-turns to get back the intended driveway. Seriously, City of Carlsbad, get your shit together.

Earlier I mentioned that Culver Beer Co. cultivated its own particular vibe despite lacking a cohesive theme (or at least, one sufficiently subtle enough to elude me). It turns out that may not be their fault from a thermodynamic perspective. In any closed system there is a finite amount of energy and from what I observed all of the theme-energy in Carlsbad was entirely consumed by Rouleur Brewing Company bringing theirs to fruition. Most every beer on the board is either a reference to cycling terminology or a punny derivation of the same. There’s a motorized shrine of interlocked wheels that consumes an entire wing of the tasting room. All remaining wall real estate is consumed by imagery of spandex-clad warriors riding the strugglebus on various inclines. There is little doubt what this brewery owner is about.

Nmoenxtth!

In cycling circles a “rouleur” is someone that considered a capable rider on multiple types of terrain, courses, and climates. In essence, they are an allarounder, someone who can deliver no matter the occasion. That’s an apt metaphor for the beers that I experienced here. And, if I’m being totally honest, I kind of resent the brewer for taking that powerhouse literary device away from me. Stay in your lane, punk. The first beer I wanted to highlight is the Boneshakeur “New Zealand Pilsner”. I enjoyed it in direct proportion to how disappointed I was that it wasn’t called Rumpshakeur. I get that Wreckx-n-Effect are notoriously litigious, but this was undeniably a missed opportunity. As it happens this pilsner was a Beer of the Week selection from my esteemed West Coaster colleague Brandon Hernández, so I’m probably not wrong when I say it’s delightful. Those fruity NZ hops make their presence known in the mix just as with the Culver Greenstone, but in slightly more elegant fashion. The nose is muted in comparison, favoring a more floral presentation, but lemon, pear, and pine notes emerge in the flavor. The clean finish assures you can return to this one time and again. Many of the brews in the Rouleur Brewing Company portfolio featured a Belgian sensibility to their recipe. I appreciated the creativity, but the end result varied. In entries like Sprinteur Red Ale it introduces some musty pomme fruit to the aroma and a complimentary dark fruit flavor to the expected toasty bread notes, but it lacked the resonant, malty finish of the red ale. However, the approach granted Grimpeur Dark Ale a bit more carob and chocolate liqueur character, with a sparing touch of anise that was stunning. Hold on. I see you twitching uncomfortably in your seat, fellow San Diegan. Let me allay your fears and confirm, yes, they do have IPAs. Several of them, actually. The standout of this bunch was Murkrideur, a DIPA that offered a taste of New England without resembling clam chowder. Sweet, fruity aromas of pear and stone fruit led the charge, while the creamy peach and nectarine notes held center stage on the palate. It reminded me of peach yogurt in a weird, but altogether pleasant way. If that’s not available, Dopeur Juicy IPA is a solid alternative in a similar vein. The sleeper (Sleepeur?) of the bunch is probably the Soloist Golden Ale. This bright straw-colored ale boasts sweet Pixie Stick sweetness offset by a delicate mustiness. It has virtually all the merits of a champagne, right down to its substantial 8.6% ABV. It would probably make for an amazing beermosa if you roll that way.
