BREWS IN THE NEWS IWCBD participants at South Park Brewing

IWCBD

Locally at least 13 different beers by Pink Boots Society members were made to celebrate International Women’s Collaboration Brew Day on March 8. This year’s theme was historical ales to highlight women’s integral role in brewing over the centuries, with the two master recipes including an ancient beer fermented with honey, or a strong ale brewed with molasses. Participating breweries included Coronado (18 Boots Hibiscus Honey Cream Ale), Eppig (Kottbusser), Second Chance (Pink Lightening Early American Strong Ale), San Diego Brewing Company (Osito IPA with honey), Burning Beard (Get Thee to a Nunnery Belgian Single), Culture Brewing (Kottbusser), Belching Beaver (Blackstrap Boots ale with molasses, cinnamon and ginger), Karl Strauss (Pink Boots Pre-Prohibition-style Presidio Porter), Stone (Kottbusser), Fall (Porter), Mike Hess (San Diegose), South Park Brewing/Monkey Paw (Gruit), and ChuckAlek (Strong Mild Ale). Keep an eye out for these beers in April and tag @PinkBootsSocietySD and #BigBootsBrew2017 as you enjoy them.

FULL CIRCLE PALE ALE

At an event on March 16 at Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens - Liberty Station, the brewing company debuted a beer created with purified reclaimed water from San Diego’s Pure Water Facility. Full Circle Pale Ale, a one-off beer no longer available, featured water that’s cleaner than what we get from the tap. The Pure Water San Diego project is the City of San Diego’s phased, multiyear program that will provided one-third of San Diego’s water supply locally by 2035.

QUAFF’S PURE BREW

Joining Stone in promoting Pure Water San Diego was local homebrew club QUAFF. On March 19, 17 beers brewed with recycled water were judged at the Westin Hotel downtown. The winners of the competition were Dan Baker with So Juicy IPRA (Indirect Potable Reuse Ale) - 1st place, Don Rutherford with Barrel Aged Imperial Black IPA - 2nd place, and Doug Brown, Piña Pale Ale (American Pale Ale with fresh pineapple) - 3rd place.

OFFBEAT CLOSES

Escondido operation Offbeat Brewing Company, opened in 2012, closed its doors to the public on March 17. During its time the brewery supported many different local artists and charities. Owners Tom and Sarah Garcia posted on the company Facebook page March 16 to alert fans of the closure. Offbeat was known for its Bear Arms Brown Ale and Girafficopter Pale Ale especially, and industry vet Tom says he isn’t opposed to taking a crack at brewing again in the future. For a last chance at tasting Offbeat beer, Bellamy’s Restaurant in Escondido is hosting a five-course beer dinner on April 6.

CORONADO IB 2.0

It turns out Coronado Brewing’s restaurant in Imperial Beach was a jumpingoff point to a bigger project. The company is planning a 10-barrel brewpub on half the property at Bikeway Village (535 Florence Street). While construction won’t be complete for 12 to 18 months, a temporary tasting room should be open this summer. The other half of Bikeway Village will feature a coffee shop Continued on page 33 »

hazy blue line india pale ale

Some days things just aren’t as clear as others, sorta like our Hazy Blue Line IPA. This collaboration beer was made with our local ENFORCERS Team. The opaque IPA has a straw-colored, juicy mouthfeel with notes of stone fruit, tropical fruit and citrus aromas and flavors. One dollar from each Hazy Blue Line IPA sold in April will support United Cerebral Palsy San Diego, charity of choice for the San Diego Enforcers.

10 WAYS TO ENJOY LOCAL ART & BEER 1. SERVE-SELF ART

A scene from Bay City's monthly art shows; photo by William Garcia

Some local beer drinkers will have already noticed stand-alone kiosks of art prints and postcards popping up at local breweries (or perhaps you read up about them in CityBeat recently). This project — “The Artery” — financially benefits the local artists that are featured each month. It’s the brainchild of Jim Yuran, who runs Normal Heights’ Ego Id Media printing company. There are pricing suggestions for the artwork, but consumers ultimately pay what they feel the art is worth. Here’s a list of participating beer locations, plus the names of April’s featured artists: Helm's Ocean Beach (Chris Dyer), Kilowatt Kearny Mesa (Espana Garcia), Mike Hess North Park (Max Moses), Mike Hess Ocean Beach (Caia Koopman), Societe (Harry Holiday), and Thorn St. Brewery (Harry Holiday).

2. DIVE-IN THEATRE Point Loma’s boutique hotel The Pearl features 10 taps of mostly local beer, plus a free movie night hosted poolside on Wednesdays. The pool is open to hotel guests, or free with a drink purchase, and reservations are recommended for the 8 p.m. showtime. Here is the schedule for April through June: Sex and the City The Movie (April 5), Wayne’s World (April 12), Dazed and Confused (April 19), Office Space (April 26), Selena (May 3), Monty Python’s Holy Grail (May 10), Ace Ventura Pet Detective (May 17), The Graduate (May 24), Almost Famous (June 7), Austin Powers International Man of Mystery (June 14), Grease (June 21), and Spaceballs (June 28).

3. ART BY THE BAY Point Loma brewery Bay City is hosting multiple art events this month. “Community Crafts” on Sunday the 23rd will feature craftspeople from the Point Loma and Ocean Beach areas who work in a variety of mediums, from leather to ceramics and more. On Thursday the 27th, the brewery’s monthly art show will host 8-10 artists picked by bartender and photographer William Garcia. Also, a large communal painting canvas has been set up on the patio to allow drinkers to express themselves creatively. On the music front, Bay City is looking for local artists to feature during their “Sunday Sessions” events from 3 - 6 p.m. E-mail Sfriedli@baycitybrewingco.com.

4. 40 OZ. TO FREEDOM Long Beach-based band Sublime is celebrating the 25th anniversary of their debut album “40oz. to Freedom” by collaborating with locals AleSmith Brewing Company on a Mexican-style lager. In addition to an initial release of limited-edition 40oz. bottles, Sublime Mexican Lager will hit the market in full in June 2017 in 12oz. six-packs. “The band members are all big fans of this style of beer,” said AleSmith owner/CEO Peter Zien. “We wanted to create our thirst-quenching version of a traditional Vienna-style lager (famously brewed by the Mexican breweries) that showcases a grainy, malt-forward sweetness and easy drinkability. Clean and crisp with subdued hop bitterness to balance makes Sublime Mexican Lager the go-to beer for hot summer days or preconcert tailgating.”

5. KARL MEETS TAYLOR Those who’ve met Karl Strauss Brewmaster Paul Segura know that he’s a big fan of guitars, and music in general. So it’s quite fitting that the brewery has teamed up with locally-based guitar manufacturer Taylor Guitars on a unique beer. 614, a farmhouse ale brewed with torrefied maple wood that Taylor uses to make their 600 guitar series, was officially released at a March 11 kickoff

party for the San Diego Music Awards; there should still be bombers of 614 at local bottle shops. The brewery also continues their support of local music and art with the returning “Arts & Amps” series on Saturdays May 20, June 24 and July 29 featuring a variety of local bands such as The Donkeys, Well Well Well, Creature Canyon, Boostive, plus live art by groups like the Cohort Collective.

6. BREWERY MOVIE NIGHTS Enjoy art gallery openings every first Friday of the month at both Culture Brewing locations (Ocean Beach and Solana Beach), as well as screenings of surf and skate films during the week; check their social media pages for more details. At Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens - Liberty Station, movie nights begin Tuesdays in June. Here’s what already planned: The Big Lebowski (June 6), The Endless Summer (June 13), Spaceballs (June 20), Boondock Saints (June 27), Superbad (July 11), Major League (July 18), Caddy Shack (July 25), Pulp Fiction (August 1), Dazed and Confused (August 8), Snatch (August 15), Reservoir Dogs (August 22), and The Princess Bride (August 29).

7. BLOOM BASH 2017 The San Diego Museum of Art’s opening celebration for the Art Alive Weekend takes place April 28 from 7 to midnight. Tickets are $200 for members or $250 for nonmembers, with proceeds benefiting education, outreach, and art initiatives year-round. On the beer and coffee front, enjoy creations by Modern Times Beer, while local distillery Cutwater Spirits is handling the custom cocktails. There’s also live music, performances, and dancing, plus an array of floral-themed exhibitions. For food, take your pick from tons of

vendors: Bertrand at Mister A’s, Blue Bridge Hospitality Pastry, Cafe Coyote, Chuao Chocolatier, Coast Catering, Curadero, The Cravory, Firefly Restaurant, Eclipse Chocolate, The French Gourmet, Golden Door, Great Maple, MIHO Catering Co., Nine Ten, Panama 66, Parq Restaurant & Nightclub, The Patio Restaurant Group, The Prado at Balboa Park, Root Cellar Catering Co., Rustic Root, Searsucker, Sheraton San Diego Hotel & Marina, Slater’s 50/50, STK, Sweet Petite Confections, Terra Catering and Events, Truluck’s Seafood Steak and Crab House, Uptown Tavern, The Westgate Hotel, and The Wild Thyme Company.

8. B&C MEET-UPS Interested in photography? Join the Beers & Cameras crew for these events in April: Kearny Mesa Meet-Up on April 6 (SoHo Gastropub 6 - 8p.m. O’Brien’s Pub 8 - 10 p.m.); Ocean Beach Meet-Up on April 20 (Culture OB 6 - 7:30p.m. Helm’s Brewing 7:45 - 8:30p.m. Pizza Port OB 8:45 - 10 p.m.)

9. PAINT YOUR OWN Belching Beaver’s Vista tasting room hosts Paint Nite, an event where you paint-your-own version of a specific piece under the guidance of a professional artist, just about every Monday. Tickets are available at PaintNite.com.

STATE REGULATORS

ON BEER DISTRIBUTION SCHEME By Andrew Keatts, Voice of San Diego

S

tate regulators are taking action on one of the craft beer industry’s biggest gripes.

Riverside and Orange counties were also punished by the ABC, after a yearlong investigation into over 100 establishments.

For years, small breweries have complained about anti-competitive and illegal practices they’ve said are common among the big distribution companies that sell brands like Budweiser, Coors and Miller.

John Carr, a spokesman for the ABC, said the agency isn’t necessarily planning to ramp up enforcement on these types of practices, but that it will be a part of the agency’s overall regulatory enforcement.

Generally, the long-alleged pay-to-play tactics include paying bars, restaurants or retailers to carry a specific brand of beer, and not its competitors. That could include paying for a bar’s new draft system — if the bar ensures that draft system is always stocked with one company’s offerings, or offering a free keg of one brand to make sure its closest competitor isn’t on tap right next to it.

“What we always expect is compliance,” he said. “These trade practice laws were put in place to ensure there’s a healthy, safe and fair marketplace for ABC licensees to compete in.”

Last month, the state’s Alcohol and Beverage Control division issued one of its largest ever punishments against companies doing that.

Jill Davidson, president of the San Diego Brewers Guild and western regional sales manager for Pizza Port, said the enforcement was a result of years of effort, as the guild pushed for things like an anonymous forum for people to report shady tactics.

If the punishment signals what’s to come, it could give a boost to a San Diego craft beer industry that’s growing into an influential player. The agency that issues and enforces liquor licenses across California reached a settlement with Anheuser-Busch – makers of brands like Bud Light, Shock Top and Goose Island – for $400,000, and a distributor called Straub Distributing Company for $10,000. The ABC said the wholesalers were covering all or part of the cost of refrigeration units, TV sets and draft systems for bars and restaurants in exchange for carrying their products. Thirty-four retailers in Los Angeles,

Increased enforcement has been a persistent lobbying request in Sacramento by the California Craft Brewers Association.

“I would anticipate this to continue for a while,” she said. “It’s something that needs to happen in San Diego County. It’s great that it happened in Southern California, but these are business practices that are so deeply embedded in these organizations, that it’s a hard thing to overhaul. The hope is they straighten out, but we probably need to see more people made an example of before it stops being a common practice.” Andrew Keatts is a reporter for Voice of San Diego. The Doctor’s Office

PATTON’S BY GONZALO J. QUINTERO, ED.D.

All too often we take for granted the art and design in our everyday lives. From the minimalist label on my toothpaste in the morning, to the wrap on the can of beer I have in the evening, an artist designed that somewhere. In the case of Mike Hess Brewing, the company’s art director Court Patton takes pride in everything that’s “customer-facing.” He told West Coaster of plans to complete a brand refresh with an assist from graphic design company Mth Degree. "The refresh on our packaging is clean and we're excited for everyone to see it," Patton said over a couple of pints. He continued: "Our beers and the look of our brand is about connecting to the legacy of beer, about respect for everything that was before us. The Hess coat of arms, for example, was purposefully designed to reflect old world sensibilities, the legacy of great beer makers and a rich history of beer in worldculture. The creatures associated with each beer are also a part of that philosophy."

The brewery’s upcoming twelve-ounce can format will provide a fresh take on the designs of these creatures with Latin names. When asked about his favorite creature creation, Patton answered without hesitation: "The phoenix from our Claritas Kölsch." Around 20 years ago, he went through design training for the U.S. Army in Germany. Shortly thereafter he and his family had an opportunity to host a foreign exchange student, Torsten, who ironically was from Germany. Torsten became part of the family, and over the years would visit San Diego from time to time, providing Mike Hess with feedback on the brewery’s Claritas Kölsch. That beer, after many tastings and tweaks, ended up winning a gold medal at the 2016 World Beer Cup. “It's exciting that a beer with so much personal history is so well-received and a part of our core lineup," Patton beamed. We meditated on this story for a moment before Court added this insightful observation: “Experiences culminate in perfect opportunities that only exist when you walk your path.” I asked him to explain

further. "I have spent over 30 years as an illustrator and designer. As a young man I heard a speaker at school addressing us about our futures, and I knew that I had to change my path to art. His talk resonated with me spiritually. I wasn’t sure what my path looked like, but I got a job at The Palm Beach Post as an artist and attended The Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale. Soon after, I came out to San Diego and worked freelance for Copley News Service. That got the attention of the art director at Computer Edge magazine, who told me to get into digital design.” After learning Illustrator 88, he never looked back. Patton’s path continues with Mike Hess Brewing. So what now? "The short answer? I want to continue staying on my path. After this many years there's still more to learn. It seems as though the more you know, the more you realize how much you don't know." He went on to clarify, saying that with new design challenges come opportunities to approach tasks in different ways, with different skill sets. He related that idea back to his current employers: “The brewery needs to remain true to itself by maintaining integrity, keeping standards high, while continuously learning and improving, all in an effort to continue staying on our path to succeed as us." •

THE ART OF LABEL DESIGN B Y R YA N L A M B

New English Explorer ESB — Darren Frydendall

N

ew English Brewing's Simon Lacey and Los Angeles-based artist Darren Frydendall were introduced to each other 10 years ago through a mutual friend. At the time, Lacey was getting New English up-and-running. Frydendall had been working on album art, tattoos, and a plethora of creations ranging from the downright scary to corporate-level renderings for electronics. The two hit it off, and have been working together on New English's designs for the better part of a decade. Early on, Frydendall advised Lacey to ditch a triangular logo in favor or a circular one, a design change that greatly improved name legibility, yet still allowed the company to stick with its 1920s-era theme. "The period between the wars was optimistic, passionate and stylish. These are all values we aspired to for the company and the beer," said Lacey. Recently, as the company added a second bottling system to get more core beers into 6-packs, the New English team took the opportunity to make slight tweaks to the logo and other design elements. This wasn't easy: "Everyone in the business knows that the smaller the label, the more area will be dedicated to information that is required by the law," said Lacey. "So we determined our label size and shape with the help of our supplier, as well as our label equipment limits, and got to work on the fun part – design – in the area we had left!" For the Explorer ESB label, it hadn't occurred to Lacey how difficult it would be to situate an antique compass in the foreground, with a boot print in the snow next to it, plus an entire mountain in the background, all within the limits of the label. "Darren was able to achieve this amazing trick of perspective, and we hope that as you drink the beer it leaves you wondering what happened to our intrepid wanderer, having lost his most prized possession in the snow on the side of some towering massif." Over the next few pages we'll share some of the work Frydendall has done for New English. We're also teaming up with the brewery for an art show featuring his work; join us Saturday, May 13th from 2 - 6 p.m. in the new New English lounge!

SECOND CHANCE NORTH PARK

Carmel Mountain-based Second Chance Beer Co. is planning to open a satellite tasting room at 4045 30th Street some time this year, hopefully by August or September. The 1,820 square foot space with an outdoor patio will hold 24 taps and 100 customers at capacity. “We are very thankful to the pioneers who established craft beer-centered bars and restaurants in the area. We have always enjoyed frequenting them,” said Second Chance chief legal officer Virginia Morrison, wife of brewmaster Marty Mendiola. “In fact, mine and Marty’s first date was at The Ritual. We will continue to recommend them and work to make our tap-room a complimentary addition to North Park.” •

‘Tis the Saison Adding farmhouse ales to the springtime brunch table

BY B R A N D O N H E R N Á NDEZ

L

ike many families, every Easter mine congregates to enjoy each other’s company and a delicious brunch. This tradition is bolstered by the presence of champagne and mimosas, both of which I wholly support, but there’s something else I look forward to popping the cork on each year – saisons. For me, there is no beer-style more evocative of and so perfectly suited for springtime as saisons. These farmhouse-style ales of Belgian and French origin convey myriad flavors, many of which epitomize the season on which we are currently and pleasantly entrenched. Esters and phenols from saison yeast strains bring on vibrant bouquets rife with grassy, floral, fruity, spicy and, depending on the presence of Brettanomyces or other wild yeast strains,

funkiness often described as “barnyard” in nature. Beer aroma doesn’t get more springtime-in-the-country than that. On the flavor front, absolutely no type of ale or lager is as unpredictably wideranging. Saison’s guidelines are just about the loosest of any style category. A fan of variety, this is what makes saisons my personal favorite. Wrestling a cork from a bottle labeled “farmhouse ale” is always an adventure. My taste buds might encounter a boldly fruity, herbaceous quaff with tight champagne-like bubbles or a spicy, flowery ale with a sticky, fluffy, snow-white head and the driest, sharpest finish imaginable.

When searching out some brunch recipes built to marry with saisons’ wealth of characteristics, I consulted the culinary minds at Breakfast Republic. This early-to-midday chain has spots in North Park, Liberty Station, Encinitas and the East Village, with an Ocean Beach location debuting this month at the former site of OB Warehouse, and a Carmel Valley location coming this summer. If you're looking for inventive breakfast and brunch fare served in tandem with eye-opening adult beverages, this is your spot.

Strawberry Mascarpone French Toast YIELD: 4 SERVINGS

-- 1 qt heavy cream -- 6 egg yolks

Breakfast Republic owes its popularity and success to items like shrimp and grits, breakfast bacon mac and cheese, and flights of pancakes or French toast. It’s a strawberry and mascarpone cheese-infused version of the latter that the chain’s kitchen- eam chose as an ideal go-with for a fruitier-flavored saison. And for a drier, spicier or more herbaceous farmhouse ale, they selected their Breakfast Jambalaya, a traditional take on the Cajun classic with shrimp, andouille sausage and fried eggs. The recipes for both of these dishes are included here for your home-kitchen experimentation. When looking for the best saison to pair, feel free to cast a wide net – there are exceptional versions of this style brewed the world over – but know there are plenty right in your own backyard.

-- 1 cup light brown sugar -- ¼ cup spiced rum -- ¼ cup vanilla extract -- 8 slices brioche bread, sliced into 1-inch thick pieces -- 8 oz mascarpone cheese -- 16 strawberries -- confectionery sugar -- pure maple syrup In a small bowl, whisk together the cream, egg yolks, brown sugar, rum and vanilla. Dip the bread into the mixture, a piece at a time, and place on a skillet over medium heat. Cook until

Great local saisons include The Lost Abbey’s Brett-infused spring seasonal Carnevale Ale, as well as its year-round Red Barn Ale. They come from the same San Marcos brewery, but taste completely different. Still, each makes for an excellent springtime indulgence. The same can be said for Saison Rustique from Vista’s 100% wild-ale operation Toolbox Brewing, which brings winebarrel vanillins and grape mustiness into the equation. Other flavorful and thirst-quenching San Diego County offerings include BNS Brewing’s Saloon Girl, Iron Fist Brewing’s Hired Hand, Modern Times Beer’s Lomaland and Second Chance Beer’s Saison Solare, any of which will go well on your brunch table come Easter and beyond.

golden-brown, then flip and repeat. Remove from the skillet and keep warm while you repeat the process with the remaining slices of bread. To serve, place a slice of bread on a plate, and top with mascarpone and strawberries. Place a second slice of bread on top, garnish with confectionery sugar, and serve warm with maple syrup.

Beer in the Headlights

THE TRIFECTA N O R T H PA R K ' S B R E W E R Y I G N I T E R By Ian Cheesman

San Diego Brewing Co.

D

espite being one of the world’s oldest beverages, beer never ceases to inspire. Sometimes it’s the engine that seeks to improve itself with novel brewing techniques or summoning unusual flavors for an insatiable drinking public. Other times it prompts unsolicited acrobatics, usually to the delight and horror of whomever you asked to hold your beer. Most recently, San Diego craft brew has inspired an entirely new category of real estate: The Beer Stripmall. The Brewery Igniter program has several footprints across the county, but none so concentrated as the North Park (Ohio St. & El Cajon Blvd.) stronghold. That crams three different breweries shoulder to shoulder, approaching Starbuck-ian levels of brewery density. The carbon footprint of the brewery tour industry is about to plummet. As it happens, it would have been difficult to find three better breweries to cram together. Each brewery feels distinct relative to the others. Were they

sentient, the mix of their personalities could probably make for a zany sitcom premise. It couldn’t be any shittier than 2 Broke Girls, right? While I generally try to lend each new brewery I encounter a (fleetingly) sober eye, this scenario demands something different. Placing three breweries together like this begs you to condense them into one experience. It’s like a triathlon, except I’m repeating the same activity 3 times and there's significantly less chance that my nipples will be bleeding at the close.

San Diego Brewing Co. The satellite location of San Diego Brewing Co. takes advantage of its surroundings. Its massive bay windows are the perfect to enjoy the weather or people-watch the lively crowd that assembles for brunch at Lips. It’s fitting that the city’s eponymous brewery is a window to our world.

The window and skylights do their part to make the tasting room feel inviting, but there’s lots of little touches that cement it. There’s tons of seating relative to the space without feeling cramped, a broad assortment of beer styles to choose from, and some of the best taster carriers in the game. Seriously, they’re great. While most breweries are content to artfully notch a plank and precariously nest their wares into it, San Diego Brewing Co. makes gravity your ally with a caddy that securely pulls the glass into it as you traverse the room. Since trying to run the gamut of each brewery would likely end in one manner of disaster or another, I opted to grab a handful that stood the best chance of impressing me. The San Diego Gold certainly accomplished that, with a bright, almost confectionary lemon-bar note up front that gave way to the anticipated floral and earthy finish. The others I tried seemed more reticent to deliver that hoppy counterpoint. This was somewhat forgivable with their Scottish Ale, 80 Shilling, whose appreciable creme brulee notes and fruitiness were to style, if a bit sweet for my tastes. In the case of The Stout and Infinitude IIPA, however, their absence was more jarring. The Stout did have a notable mesquite aroma and sweet roastiness, but resolved with a lackluster burnt brownie tone. Even the potent, juicy orange notes of the Infinitude IIPA couldn’t save its unremarkable finish. Even if my initial pass wasn’t a homerun, it bears mentioning that I would happily revisit San Diego Brewing Co. With 12 beers to try and a space so conducive to trying them, I’m eager to see how the new locale re-ignites the brand.

Eppig Brewing The layout of Eppig Brewing embraces a rustic aesthetic. You’re flanked on all sides by weathered wood paneling, which is used to form various decorations and nooks to stow your gear. It’s like drinking inside of an antique wardrobe. And this one has the benefit of no nosy Pottery Barn clerks interrogating you while doing so.

46

APRIL 2017

Eppig Brewing likewise has an open bay window, though it faces the complex’s own parking lot. That doesn’t quite have the je nais sais quoi of a portal to the sights and sounds of North Park, but there is a really nice dumpster to look at should you desire. Still, I never tire of imbibing in the fresh air, so I wouldn’t trade it. Eppig Brewing has gained early notoriety by favoring lagers in their initial offerings. That is pretty unusual for a new outfit and makes it all the more exciting when they execute on them with aplomb. The roasty character of the garnet-tinged Schwarzbier sustains from start to finish with minority contributions from cereal grain notes. It finishes earthy, yet crisp, packing a lot of character into 4.9% ABV. Their Baltic Porter likewise impresses, with a nose full of anise and roast marshmallows complementing flavors of dark fruit, licorice and turbinado sugar.

The ales are hardly second-class here, though my sampling was a bit more uneven. Their rye brown ale, Red Bag 7, had a dull rye spice that marginally livened the encounter, but didn’t inspire loyalty. However, The Wolf, a 9% ABV DIPA, was a punchy hop salad, dumping a cascade of citrus and pine on the palate. Let it warm a bit to really understand what it offers. Through an embrace of unusual styles and an undeniably strong gambit of initial offerings, Eppig Brewing seems well poised to bring a lot of foot traffic to this complex.

Pariah Brewing Company The Pariah Brewing Company tasting room strikes a vibe that is not only unusual relative to its neighbors, but to tasting rooms at large. Its dark purple walls, glossy stainless steel fixtures, and 8 Shades of Gray tile work feel like the spiritual embodiment of vintage Manowar album art. It’s metal, but bombastic rather than brooding. It cultivates something unique and that’s always welcome. This location has the smallest number of offerings in the complex, though that has little bearing on their diversity. Creativity dominates style here. This is arguably best illustrated by Erotic City, an ale brewed with honey, muscat grapes, and grains of paradise. It is sweet enough to represent the mead character emerging from the honey, but counters it with a zesty, earthy finale to prevent it from becoming cloying. It’s not one I’d habitually reach for, but is undeniably approachable. It doesn’t get less freewheeling from there. The Uni Stout represents the first time (at least in my beeraddled memory) that sea urchin has been a featured ingredient in craft brewing. While that ingredient might drive some to distraction (or scrambling for an epi pen should you be allergic to shellfish), the experience actually favors a pleasant, weirdly conventional coffee roastiness with a mild salinity. It strikes an unusual balance, but an enjoyable one. The only truly familiar offering that day was Dank Drank IPA, whose hefty spruce notes and citrus rind undercurrent represented the most “West Coast” offering in the mall. It was indeed unrelentingly dank and moderately bitter. Pariah Brewing Company clearly desires to leave no flavor profile unturned. While eschewing standard styles seems an unusual start to a brewery, the quality of the initial offerings suggest the gamble will pay off. • Pariah Brewing Company
