Vista Chamber President & CEO Bret Schanzenbach

Albert Einstein once said, “The distinction between the past, present and future is only a stubbornly persistent illusion.” I’m not sure if I am smart enough to verify or deny the truth in that thinking, but I do know that communities are made great by those institutions that have stood the test of time. As the Vista Chamber of Commerce nears her 95th birthday (June 6), I thought it might be appropriate to consider those organizations that have become the backbone of Vista and have played a part in making us a great community.

Vista School System: Vista Unified School District was formed in 1936, but the first Vista schools go back to 1916. For a school system to endure 100+ years it has to grow, adapt and change. Vista Unified currently takes innovation very seriously in every aspect of education. Currently our district is home to 29 schools that serve over 22,000 students annually, making Vista Unified the 4th largest district in San Diego County. Vista Branch, County Library: The San Diego County Library system was started in 1913. The Vista Library was not far behind, starting in 1915. Originally it was a homebased library, but within a year moved into the Vista Inn. Later it was housed in a school house, a bank and eventually its own home on S. Melrose (currently a law library). It moved to its current home on Eucalyptus in 1994 and is now the most active branch of the county system with over one million items being checked out annually. The Woman’s Club of Vista: For any community to thrive you need philanthropy and volunteerism. The Woman’s Club of Vista has been providing both since 1916. Their original motto was, "Along the friendly way we journey to achieve the best things for country life." They still make a major impact in our community today as they contribute over 12,000 hours of community service per year and have donated over $580,000 to 59+ different organizations since 2005. The Vista Chamber of Commerce: The Vista Chamber of Commerce was started by 18 public-spirited individuals who met in the Vista Inn in June, 1923. Since then, the Vista Chamber has been instrumental in the formation of the Vista Irrigation District, Tri-City Medical Center, the incorporated City of Vista, and much more. Today the Vista Chamber has 565 members that represent thousands of employees. The Chamber is active in the business community, in education, city government, public safety and the non-profit sector. Vista Irrigation District: The Vista Irrigation District was voted into existence in August, 1923 and brought water to the area from Lake Henshaw in February, 1926. With the arrival of water came the first economic boom for Vista: avocados. By the end of the 1920’s Vista was the avocado capital of the world with groves and groves of trees and 18 packing houses in downtown. Today the district serves a population of over 129,000 with over 4.7 billion gallons of water per year. City of Vista: In 1882 John Frazier got the first post office opened in town. He originally tried to name it “Frazier’s Crossing” or “Buena Vista”, but those names were taken. So he arrived on the name “Vista” and our fair community was born. However, The City of Vista was not incorporated until January, 1963. The first mayor was a chamber veteran named Joe Fotheringham who was appointed by his fellow city council members. The City of Vista is now home to approximately 100,000 residents and has an annual general fund budget of over $77 million. The Vista Chamber is honored to have played such a key role in the development of our community over the past 95 years. But it takes everyone pulling together to make a community thrive. Here’s to a bright future! Viva Vista!

When Pigs Fly BBQ When Pigs Fly BBQ got its start in 2006 when Dale and Tammy Ginos submitted an entry into a BBQ competition at Stagecoach Country Music Festival that struck a winning chord with hungry concert-goers. It might have seemed as far-reaching at the time as pigs flying, but the popularity of their dry-rubbed, smoked meats at Stagecoach led them to compete in more competitions, open a catering company, and then in 2014 open their first brick-and-mortar location inside of a gas station on E. Vista Way, serving up countless orders of takeout a day.

Meats are specially prepared at When Pigs Fly BBQ by cooking them in old hickory wood-burning smokers until the meat reaches perfection. Low temperatures and plenty of unrushed time are the key to their signature taste. In fact, the majority of hot foods served at the restaurant are run through the smoker to add that extra bit of magic. Because of their flavorful preparation methods, they can be eaten with or without the tangy and sweet house-made BBQ sauce, which is always served on the side.

Altitude Trampoline Park Gets Vista Jumpin’ in a Big Way! By Mary Schmidt-Krebs

The city of Vista is jumpin’! Recently opened, the new Altitude Trampoline Park is resplendent with high energy equipment including trampolines, a foam pit, a rock climbing wall, and much more for families, groups, and individuals. Altitude Trampoline California is the 48th trampoline park in the Altitude franchise family offering high-energy and exciting family entertainment that includes a kids court, gymnastics tumble tracks, performance trampolines, clip n climb challenges, dodgeball court, foam pits, two basketball dunking lanes and battlebeam that pits two friends against each other to try to knock off the other into a giant foam pit. Promoting a safe, clean and fun atmosphere, Altitude boasts nearly 26,000 square feet of space which includes 18,000 square feet of indoor trampolines and other amenities. The Park is owned and operated by two local families, the Darlingtons and the Spencers, who are – unbelievably – all scientists! Tom Darlington is a nanotechnologist and his wife, Janice, is a biologist. Matt Spencer is an analytical chemist and his wife, Andrea, is a biochemist. The Vista Altitude Trampoline Park equipment is fully manufactured in the USA with safety in mind. All Altitude Trampoline Parks are ASTM (American Society of Testing and Materials) certified parks. ASTM creates the highest standards for safety in the industry –

which sets Altitude Trampoline Parks as some of the safest in the industry.

operating hours: Phone: 760-842-5142.

A bit of history about trampolines: The first modern trampolines were built by a couple of University of Iowa gymnasts in 1936. Since then, they’ve been used by the US Navy Flight School to train pilots and navigators in spatial orientation, by NASA for astronaut training, and for competitive and recreational purposes.

The Park is suitable for all ages and is available for birthday parties, group events and even toddlers (and their parents.) They have a special Toddler Time (ages 6 and under) each weekday from 10:00am - 1:00pm at a discounted rate of $8.95/hr. Parents can also jump for an additional $2.00. Under 2 years old are free with $8.95 adult admission.

Early competitions were held mostly in colleges and schools. The first world competition was held in 1964 in London. That was the year a PE instructor at the University of Louisiana, Jeff Hennessey, became the first coach of the US Trampoline Team.

All jumpers are required to wear safety socks. Park fees are: Single jumper rates – 30 Minutes: $8.95; 60 Minutes: $14.95; 120 Minutes: $23.95; Additional 1 hour: $5.00; Altitude Trampoline Socks (required) are $2 per pair.

Trampolining became an Olympic sport at the 2000 Summer Games in Sydney. There are three divisions of the Olympic sport – synchronized trampoline, tumbling, and double mini-trampoline. Each country is allowed to have one man and one woman representative. On a competitive trampoline, trampolinists can reach heights of 33 feet. Altitude Trampoline Park Vista, the first Altitude Park in California, is located at 1928 Hacienda Drive and is open 7 days a week. Check out their website for

Mayor's Musings Mayor Judy Ritter

I am

constantly reminded of all the reasons I am thankful to be a part of this community. Whether

it’s new economic development, our upcoming new park enhancements, or the continuance of our Paseo Santa Fe improvements, we have a lot to be excited about. Thank you to the Chamber for hosting the State of the Community in which I presented my State of the City address. I have great respect for the tremendous work it takes to organize this event and I appreciate the opportunity to communicate what the City has accomplished and where we are heading. When I first became mayor, I pledged to improve our public safety, grow our economy, and lay the foundation for a better future. With the crime rate at a twenty-year low; rapid, efficient emergency responses; increased city reserves; a renewed downtown renaissance (some of the recent additions are When Pigs Fly and Mother’s Provisions!); smoother and better roads; and a significant investment in our parks; we are fulfilling that commitment. One big takeaway emerged in 2017: the State of our City is STRONG. I invite you to explore the 2017 list of accomplishments posted at The Vista community should take great pride in these achievements. The fiscal health of our city is in good shape due to sound financial planning. We are now better prepared to financially provide the vital services needed for our residents, regardless of future economic downturns. Vista’s unemployment rate is an historic low of 2.9 percent and this is another positive indicator our successful economy. New jobs are being created and more opportunities are on the horizon. With our continued support of our business sector and our Innovate 78 partnership, we will continue to keep, train, and attract creative talent to our city and to our region. I am honored to be your Mayor in a time of remarkable change in Vista. I believe that by defining unified goals, creating a comprehensive roadmap, and maintaining service levels to support the whole community, we will continue to shape our entire city’s collective destiny.

Strawberries are one of the most unique fruits in the world. Because they wear their seeds on the outside, they technically are not considered “berries” at all. But that doesn’t stop Americans from enjoying them. When you consider both fresh and frozen strawberries, the average American consumes about 5 lbs of strawberries per year. And while 80% of the US’s strawberries are grown in California, every state in the nation grows them. The love for strawberries is not unique to America. Belgium has a strawberry museum (Le Musee de la Fraise), the French consider strawberries an aphrodisiac, and reportedly ancient Romans thought Chair of the Board Amber Ter-Vrugt

strawberries had medicinal power. Strawberries truly are an amazing fruit. The Vista Chamber is proud to host the 9th annual Vista Strawberry Festival, presented by Tri-City Medical Center, on Sunday May 27, 2018. The festival definitely has something for everyone with 450 street fair vendors, six entertainment stages featuring live entertainment, a 10k/5k/Kids’ Run, Vista craft beer garden, carnival rides, food court, 15 contests and more. The contests in particular boast all kinds of great opportunities for participation. Whether you

like to bake strawberry dessert, eat strawberry pie, brew strawberry beer or dress up like a strawberry, this is the place for you! So what’s new in 2018, you might ask? We have converted our “Strawberry Idol” contest into “Vista’s Got Talent”. Anyone, any age, with any talent, can compete for the $500 top prize. While Strawberry Idol was popular, it only allowed for “singers”. Now you can sing, play a musical instrument, dance, do a comedy act, juggle, or almost anything else that is family friendly. Also in 2018 we have brought back our Strawberry Video contest. Be creative and create a two minute video about strawberries. This can be humorous, serious, or anywhere in between. Cash prizes will be available for this contest as well. We have many other contests that tap into your talents: poster design contest, t-shirt logo design contest, Shades or Red art contest, baking contest, and home beer brewing contest. Then we have fun on-site contests: costume contest, beer stein holding contest, frozen t-shirt contest, pie eating contest, strawberry hat contest, Little Ms. Strawberry Shortcake contest, and more. Exciting Eastside Expansion By Anne McDonnell

If you’ve been on the east side of Vista recently, you’ll have noticed the new construction on both sides of East Vista Way. Two local businesses are part of these expansions and upgrades: Ciao Ristorante Italiano and Prohibition Brewing Company. Ciao is in the midst of a 10,000-square-foot expansion that will result in Ciao Plaza, a new building that will house the restaurant plus additional space to offer a wider variety of Italian foods, wines, and desserts. The plaza will feature a pizzeria, bakery, delicatessen, cafe, gelateria, enotecta, and large banquet hall. According to owner Guiseppe Di Giovanni, the banquet hall will seat up to 300 guests: “The perfect size for hosting wedding receptions, corporate events, holiday parties, and other large gatherings.” The Ciao Plaza Bakery will sell Italian desserts made by new pastry chef Rodolfo Guglielmi, and the Ciao Gelateria will use traditional gelato-making procedures to create authentic Italian ice cream. Di Giovanni’s sister Civita and her husband Silverio have been making their own gelato for more than 60 years. Civita’s father-in-law, Giulio, began the family gelato business 90 years ago when he used to sell it on a threewheel tricycle around the island of Ponza. Says Di Giovanni, “I’m thankful to Civita and Silverio, and am excited to share this family tradition here in Vista.” Di Giovanni and his wife Gloria have been in San Diego County for more than 40 years, and their restaurant has been at its current location for more than 20 years. The restaurant is open during construction. Across the street is Prohibition Brewing Company, which completed expansion of its brewery building in February 2017. According to owner Ron Adams, the expansion will allow the brewery to triple its brewing capacity. In addition, the brewery started bottling its own beer, and the 22-ounce bottles are now available on site and at local stores. The expansion started in early 2016 of the on-site building that was previously used for grain storage and keg cleaning. Construction took 10 months and included plumbing, electrical, and a raised ceiling to accommodate larger brew tanks.

The main motivation to expand, says Adams, was space. Previously, all of the brewing took place in a small area of the restaurant building, “which really limited us,” he says. “The expansion gave us the space to install a small bottling line and more brew tanks, and have room to move around. The extra space and new equipment also gave us the ability to try new recipes and create new beers. We put a lot of planning into this building and it works well.” To see (and taste!) all of these exciting new offerings for yourself, head to East Vista Way and check out Ciao and Prohibition.

At Taylion, It’s All About Careers and College Readiness By Mary Schmidt-Krebs

Taylion Academy, a free, WASC accredited public charter school, is all about preparing students to be college and career ready through an Independent Studies program that includes Personalized Learning Plans. They have a multitude of platforms that address these two issues including a Work Force program aimed at K-12-16 students that offers certification in college and career readiness and a monthly career and college readiness day that features professionals from all walks of life talking about career opportunities. TAYLION is an acronym based on the following character traits and virtues: truth, acceptance, youth, leadership, intelligence, optimism, and nurturing. Their mission is to bridge the academic achievement gap through a personalized learning model that prepares students to be college and career ready. In addition, the school has a theme of C.A.R.E. which Taylion hopes will strive to cultivate students who are critical thinkers, academic achievers, responsible citizens, and effective communicators. “Taylion is all about providing a flexible, personalized education in a safe environment,” explains Karen Ruffner, director of compliance. “We understand and care that our student voices are heard, that their needs are met, and that they know that they have the potential of a successful future. Our teachers help our students identify educational goals and then enable them to accomplish those goals.”

in courses that earn college credit. And finally, 4. PACE: Students need to decide how fast they want to learn. Based on their academic goals, students can go as fast or as slow as they want. If a student has mastered a specific module or class, they can move on to the next one. Taylion also has a Student Creative Council that hosts fundraisers throughout the school year to help fellow students with funds for senior activities. Students who join student creative council learn to be community leaders through the community volunteer projects.

The charter school offers an instructional model that addresses four issues: 1. TIME: students identify when they want to learn. Do you prefer to study in the morning, afternoon, evening or at night? How many breaks do you need and how often do you take them? 2. PLACE: students decide where they want to learn. Does the student want to learn at home or do they want to work in a resource center with the support of

a teacher and their peers? Or maybe both? 3. PATH: Students decide which way they want to learn. Students are asked to examine their goals from their Personalized Learning Plan. Students need to decide whether they want to graduate early or recover lost credits. Students need to consider whether they want get started with a career right after graduating or enroll

Bottom Left: Former station master Robert “Bob” Bobbett and his wife, Aimee. admire their new book, “A History of Vista,” at a book signing by authors Harrison and Ruth Doyle in 1983. Above: A Santa Fe Railroad train waits at the Vista depot in this mid-1950s photograph. 26

A stately train engine and several railroad cars towered over the crowd of Vistans and offcials who had gathered to dedicate – and celebrate – the arrival of the railroad. It was January 1, 1888, and the longheld dreams of passenger transportation and prompt shipping of locally grown produce had become a reality. No more all-day trips to Oceanside by horse and wagon to gather supplies or perhaps see the area's only doctor. There was even a transfer at the coast for a business trip or visit in San Diego. First called the Oceanside & Escondido Railway, and later the Santa Fe Railroad, the train made stops at Vista and San Marcos. Vista had only a well-worn freight platform until 1913, when the Santa Fe Railroad announced it would build a modern depot and new platform for $8,007.

Vista had perfect soil and climate, but water was scarce and much of the farming depended on weather and a few wells. After the arrival of an adequate water supply in February, 1926, the number of freight cars shipping avocados, citrus, field crops and flowers zoomed. In 1925, 20 railroad freight cars of produce were shipped from Vista. In 1926, the total was 150 carloads, and in 1927 almost 700. Packing sheds blossomed alongside the Vista rails, and soon heavier tracks had to be laid to accommodate the weight. The freight lines were heavily used until the late 1950's, when homes and

An Oceanside to Escondido freight train pulls away from the newly built Vista depot in 1914.

commercial ventures gradually replaced groves and fields. Freight loads declined steadily, and the station closed on December 20, 1969, after 80 years of service. L.F. and Gertrude Bobbett moved to Vista from Los Angeles in 1936 with their sons Robert and William. Robert “Bob” Bobbett graduated from Oceanside-Carlsbad High School in 1937 and worked for the Santa Fe Railroad from 1939 until its closing – with time out to serve in World War II. He was in charge of the station most of that time and operated the Western Union Telegraph. He lived with his wife, Aimee, and son, Stephen, in the station master's house downtown. Years of controversy ensued over possible uses for the sturdy depot building. One City Councilman created an outcry when he proposed that the historic

building be demolished and used for firewood. Ultimately, the City Council voted to accept a $40,000 Federal Grant to move the depot several blocks from its original site off North Santa Fe Avenue to the corner of Washington Street and Michigan Avenue. It would serve as the new home for the Chamber of Commerce, with the federal government stipulating that the site be used as a venue to encourage economic development. The newly refurbished depot was dedicated on July 2, 1981. Except for an occasional freight train, all was quiet along the old tracks until the $480 million Sprinter commuter train was dedicated on March 9, 2008. It daily carries passengers from Escondido to the railroad station in Oceanside. The Sprinter began a new era of railroad travel, just as its predecessor had done more than a century earlier. Window Facility and Showroom Opens in Vista By Anne McDonnell

In October 2017, Your Window Shoppe opened in the Business Park area of Vista to offer customers factory-direct windows and doors. Your Window Shoppe’s manufacturing facility is located at the Vista location, and the public can visit the factory/showroom to view the company’s process and products, and make purchases directly from the manufacturer. Says owner Nick Fry, “Our customers never pay a middleman mark-up, which is a significant savings.”

Says Fry, “Purchasing from us is simple, starting with our ‘no-hard-sell’ approach…. We never bring a contract with us on the initial visit.” Customers can come by and tour the factory/

“Purchasing from us is simple, starting with our ‘no-hard-sell’ approach ... “ Fry and his wife Margie have many years of hands-on experience managing a window company, and previously owned a similar facility in Upland, California. They sold that facility and opened their new business in Vista late last year. Says Fry, “We are grateful our path directed us to beautiful San Diego. … We are excited and humbled by this new opportunity to provide the same

showroom to view the products. They can then schedule an in-home appointment to measure for the windows and doors, or they can call in rough measurements for a telephone estimate. Fry says that he and his wife “always dreamed of owning our own business,” since they “both come from entrepreneurial families. From the

beginning, we knew our business vision would involve doing what we knew best and loved to do – manufacturing. Our goal was to own and operate a local window and patio door manufacturing company that caters directly to homeowners.” The business came out of “a desire to fill what we saw as a great need – a company that would manufacture a quality product, offered at a fair price, and treat each and every customer with the honesty and respect they deserve,” says Fry. This business model has proven successful for Your Window Shoppe. Says Fry,

“Each and every day we meet the nicest people and feel so grateful. … We look forward to providing [our] services to our new community, and supporting other businesses in Vista and the surrounding areas of North County.” Your Window Shoppe 2445 La Mirada Drive Vista, CA 92081 (760) 727-0001 Monday–Friday 9 a.m.–5 p.m., Saturday 9 a.m.–1 p.m.
