Crozier's Taking New Shape I was recently stuck by the cycle of life that businesses go through. Just like all forms of life, a business goes through a birth, a life, and eventually a death. As many of us know, many businesses have a very short life. Some, on the other hand, become community icons. Unfortunately in Vista, we are currently witnessing the death of an icon in our community, the Vista Entertainment Center. After nearly 60 years in downtown Vista, the Vista Entertainment Center is closing its lanes to make room for a Honda dealership. My kids are mourning already. On the flip side, however, I recently experienced a butterfly-like rebirth of another long-time Vista icon, Crozier’s Flowers. Crozier’s has been in downtown since 1959 and has provided flowers for every occasion imaginable ever since. I remember buying prom corsages at Crozier’s when I was in high school way back in the mid-1980’s. In January, 2016, Jeanette Wallace purchased Crozier’s. Jeanette is a long-time north county resident and a Vistan since 2002. Since taking over, Jeanette has continued that friendly, down home feel that guarantees you a smile each time you enter. However, she has also put Crozier’s through an Extreme Lobby

Makeover! Of course, you can still get flowers for anything imaginable, but, as Jeanette said, she wants Crozier’s "to be known for more than flowers". Jeanette has turned Crozier’s into one of Vista’s cutest gift shops with all kinds of items from local artisans. Her walls and shelves are filled with unique gifts and home decor. You'll love her selection of jewelry, totes, kitchen and wine accessories, greeting cards and more! She also has some genuine Vista swag for any out-of-town guests looking for keepsakes. Jeanette also shared that since Rocket Fizz has closed its doors, she is going to start selling candy soon – movie goers take note. Crozier’s is just one of the most pleasant places you will enter in our community. In addition to coming in and enjoying a “Cheers” type of atmosphere, it is fun to come in because it is ever changing. Jeanette shared that she is in a never ending state of expansion and innovation and that the public would do well to keep coming in and checking out the gift shop because no two days are ever the same. Sadly, it is time to say R.I.P. to the Vista Entertainment Center. But raise a glass to the rebirth of Crozier’s Flowers! Viva Vista! VISTACHAMBER.ORG

ith downtown Vista’s redevelopment and the creation of walkable areas, more people are enjoying Vista’s restaurants, breweries, and shops. Many of these patrons may have noticed the public art that adds to this vibrant new area. To continue this effort of placing public art, and to help expand and improve the arts community in Vista, the Vista Art Foundation was established as a nonprofit group “to give artists of all ages and genres a voice,” according to Jaydon Sterling-Randall, president of the Vista Art Foundation. The Foundation holds regular monthly meetings and events to promote the local art scene. Says Sterling-Randall, “We try to have pop-up art shows whenever we can.” These have included shows called Summer Nocturne, Get Weird, Kings and Queens, and The Heart Show. The foundation is currently reaching out to other organizations to help put on collaborative art events. For example, the Alley Art Festival is held in September, and this year will mark the event’s 4th annual show (on Sunday, September 3, 2017). In addition, the organization works to have public art displayed around Vista. It has hung art in the Vista Library, Vista Chamber of Commerce, City of Vista Civic Gallery (located on the second floor of the Civic Center), and other businesses in Vista. “The Foundation is about all the arts,” says Sterling-Randall. “Music, dance, painting, drawing, photography, sculpture, written and spoken word, fashion, the glass arts, metal arts, ceramics, jewelry, puppetry, and more … it is rewarding to be involved with a group of like-minded people.” Anyone can join the Vista Art Foundation (see Says Sterling-Randall, “We welcome involvement in the Foundation from artists to art-lovers to people who just enjoy volunteering.” Meetings are held on the first Monday of the month at 6:30 p.m. in the community

room of the Paseo Point Apartments (325 S. Santa Fe Avenue). People can also follow the foundation’s Facebook page to find out what is going on or to support the organization. The Foundation is currently funded by membership fees, donations, and fundraisers, and it looks to the community to continue to support its efforts to promote local art and artists. One of the Foundation’s most urgent goals is to have its own space. “If we did, we could hold art classes, have a gallery, and much more,” says Sterling-Randall. “There is a real need for the Vista Art Foundation to find a space to create a new art hub in Vista. Our Vista artists are relocating and

Vista Art Foundation VistaArtFoundation/ supporting the art movement in other communities because of the lack of a gallery in Vista.” Sterling-Randall says that the Vista community can support the Foundation by attending fund-raisers, attending the Alley Art Festival, making donations to the foundation, and sharing Facebook posts. “We … have the vision and the energy to work toward changing the face of Vista,” she says.

Mayor Judy Ritter

We are excited for another great summer of entertainment at the Moonlight Amphitheatre. Four blockbuster musicals are on tap, kicking off with the Elton John rock opera Aida, then Disney’s The Little Mermaid, followed by Andrew Lloyd Webber’s dramatic Sunset Boulevard, and concluding with the recent hit In the Heights by Lin-Manuel Miranda. Working with Artistic Director Steven Glaudini to bring the magic to the Moonlight is Vista native Colleen Kollar Smith, recently appointed Managing Director of the Moonlight. Colleen is one of Vista’s success stories. She began her theatrical pursuits as an adolescent in the Moonlight youth program, graduated from Rancho Buena Vista High School and pursued Theatre, Nonprofit Management and Leadership from the University of California, Irvine and the University of San Diego. She has worked creatively and in management at many theatres in San Diego County; however, she is now “back home” at the Moonlight where she is also responsible for programming concerts and other community events. Colleen’s first event at the Moonlight will be “Flashback Fall Fest” this October 27, featuring a concert of 80’s music, followed by the showing of the Halloween favorite “Hocus Pocus” on October 28. Colleen reminds us that the Moonlight is a year-round theatre venue with great concerts, family shows, and the popular cabaret season at ClubM. If you have not yet experienced a Moonlight production, I encourage you to learn more about the upcoming summer season and purchase tickets at MoonlightStage. com. The Moonlight Amphitheatre is a one-of-a-kind experience with its beautiful outdoor setting and professional productions. The theatre is VERY family friendly and is a great place to make summer memories. I’ve enjoyed sharing the theatre with my children, and now with my grandchildren! Moonlight's Managing Director Colleen Kollar Smith.

Finer Things in Life ... By Mary Schmidt-Krebs Vista Valley Country Club is truly, just as it claims on its website, North County’s best kept secret to the finer things in life. Originally built as an exclusive private golf and social country club in 1977, it was acquired by John and Terri Havens, from New Orleans, Louisiana, in March 2007. Over the years, the Havens and their management team have spent countless hours on a multi-milliondollar expansion of the 39,000 square foot “Mission Revival” style clubhouse and the golf course. The property sprawls over 240 acres and backs up to Cal-a-Vie Luxury Health Spa and Retreat, also owned by the Havens’. Upgrades to the facility include the men’s and women’s locker rooms, saunas and spas, a new workout facility and virtual golf room. Common areas, including the dining area, terraces and pro shop were updated and many new features added to enhance the member experience. The Vista Valley Country Club Championship 18-hole golf course, built by pro golfer Ted Robinson, Sr., has stunning mountain views, water features and is a challenge for golfers of all levels. PGA and LPGA golf professionals are on site offering lessons and professional golf insights. A friendly environment to socialize, members enjoy invigorating fitness classes, playing a challenging timeof golf or tennis, feasting on fresh farm-toed Limit round

With gorgeous views overlooking the rolling hills of the Ted Robinson Sr. golf course, Vista Valley offers an enchanting venue for weddings, family gatherings, business meetings, or a tranquil place to unwind. Their private membership offerings are as diverse as the stunning clubhouse views and include: family, corporate, individual, junior executive, sport/fitness (individual or family), non-resident family and nonresident individual and social only. One of the highlights of Vista Valley Country Club is quite simply, the cuisine served in the exquisitely decorated main dining room area and the Lounge Bar with expansive picturesque views of the golf course. Creatively directed by our Chef de Cuisine, Carlos Barba featuring sumptuous menus for breakfast, lunch, dinner and brunch which reflect the best of each season by offering the finest local produce, unique flavors and innovative recipes. Offers 4DX & Junior Theatres! By Mary Schmidt-Krebs

The best movie going experience in the world has arrived in Vista…and you are invited to check it out! This premium theater experience is now available at Cinépolis Vista located in the heart of the Vista Village shopping center. Cinépolis Vista is the third Cinépolis location positioned in San Diego County. This recently upgraded Cinépolis offers reclining leather seats, state of the art digital projection, premium audio and sound, stadium seating, spacious theaters and online seat reservations. In addition to this quality movie environment, Cinépolis Vista is now home to two new attractions: A 4DX auditorium and a Cinépolis Junior theatre. 4DX is a state of the art technology that immerses the movie-goer into a multi-sensory cinematic experience. Imagine enjoying every up and down, every scent and sound, every raindrop and lightning flash, every fog cloud and creeping critter, just as if you were in the movie itself. It is the world’s first 4D technology brand for feature films including Hollywood blockbusters, local films, and alternative content such as concerts and commercials. The theater’s 4DX auditorium is changing the paradigm of watching a movie - from “viewing” to “experiencing” a movie. 4DX delivers a cinema experience unlike any other

technology by providing entertainment that cannot be replicated by any form of home entertainment system. If 4DX immersion is too intense for your children, Cinépolis Vista now

Pull out trays make dishes accessible, or put spices or utensils at your fingertips. Under-thecabinet lighting is another example of an improvement that simultaneously brightens and beautifies. And adding concealed cabinets for trash cans is an

ideal way to improve the function of a kitchen while keeping it aesthetically pleasing to both guests and residents of the home. Are you familiar with the difference between granite and Mr. Cabinet Care’s specially fabricated Cambria® quartz? The folks at Mr. Cabinet Care can tell you, and are ready to provide the benefits of each, so you can make an educated choice about the best countertop for your home. Taking advantage of the professional knowledge you will find at Mr. Cabinet Care is a smart choice when you are planning to redesign, resurface, or remodel. Rancho Buena Vista Our Rich Legacy by Lois Cavalier

“We had many happy days at the Rancho and entertained musicians from The Doctor's Symphony in Los Angeles on weekends. Ramon Navarro came to dinner almost every Sunday.. The magnolia tree was planted by Joan Crawford.”

Anastasia Weil wrote about her years at Rancho Buena Vista in 1995, when at age 84 she was inducted into the Vista Hall of Fame. She and her husband, noted eye surgeon Dr. Walter Weil, lived in the historic home from 1957 to 1973. Over the years, they gave generously of themselves to the community they grew to love. Today's visitors are indebted to a series of 20th century owners who continually restored and enhanced the adobe house and grounds. Felipe Subria would be proud to see what he began in 1834. With the secularization of San Luis Rey Mission, many of the Indian neophytes, who had been told what to do each day, had lost touch with their indigenous talents of living off the land. Some went to work on neighboring ranchos. The more enterprising, like Luiseno Indian Felipe Subria, took squatter's rights on surrounding lands. Subria farmed on both sides of Buena Creek and raised a family. In 1844, Governor Pio Pico granted him the original 1,184 acres of Rancho Buena Vista.

Briefly, here is the chronological ownership of Rancho Buena Vista in the 1800's: 1848: Subria deeds land to daughter Maria and husband William Dunn for $1.00. 1850: The Dunns lose the entire rancho to Jesus Machado for an $8.00 debt. 1860s: Jesus and wife Lugarda lose the rancho for an $800 debt. Vista suffers a Great Depression caused by the Civil War emptying the nation's coffers; extreme drought; a major earthquake; and a smallpox epidemic. 1869: Lorenzo Soto, Los Angeles politician/business man, takes title to the rancho. 1870: Soto sells to Cave Johnson Couts, owner of nearby Rancho Guajome. 1885: A survey by the United States Surveyor General shows rancho land has grown to 4,269 acres. 1874 to 1920: Couts dies and his widow, Ysidora, gives the rancho to daughter Maria Antonia as a wedding gift. Maria Antonia gives the rancho to sister Ysidora, also as a wedding gift.

In 1918, a new era began. The Vista Land Company had as its goal the development of the area into a cohesive planned community. It acquired all but 51 acres of Rancho Buena Vista. Preservation of the house and land began with the purchase by Jack and Helen Knight. Heiress to the famed Mary McKinney Gold Mine in Cripple Creek, Colorado, Helen spent much of her inheritance during the 1920s in restoring the deteriorating adobe home and gardens. The Knights granted to the citizens of Vista, in perpetuity, land at the corner of East Vista Way and Civic Center Drive that was dedicated in 1929, and remains, as Wildwood Park. In 1931, the Knights sold to Harry and Margarita Fischer Pollard. Margarita, known to silent movie fans as “the American beauty,” and Harry, a Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer official, continued restoration. The house became known as one of the most beautiful and unique homes in San Diego County. Frederick Reid, a geologist and casino owner, purchased the rancho in 1951 and used it as a summer home. The Reids sold to Dr. Walter and Anastasia Weil in 1956.

The Weils were instrumental in the founding of the Vista Historical Society in 1967 to fill what then-mayor Harrison Doyle called a need for “keepers of the past.” Dr. Weil had built a medical complex on the land, and the couple soon offered all of Rancho Buena Vista to the City of Vista for $100,000. Their idea was to create a much-needed city hall complex—and a museum in the restored adobe house. But in 1968, while Mayor Doyle was in Sacramento on business, the pro-purchase City Council held its regular meeting and was persuaded by a few citizens to put the proposal to a public vote. It was turned down as “too expensive.” The Weils sold the land and home in 1973 to Rudd and Sally Schoeffel for $500,000. The Schoeffels built the professional complex bordered by Alta Vista and Civic Center drives. They continued improvements to the home and grounds until they sold to the city. In 1989, the City of Vista purchased the ranch house and remaining 1.9 acres for $2,150,000 and has been responsible for its maintenance and care ever since. Docent tours, art shows,

weddings and educational talks for school children abound, keeping alive the rancho's spirit and history. What Felipe Subria began in 1834 by taking squatter's rights to some bare land in a remote place not yet named Vista has almost magically been nurtured and preserved as a historic landmark for the enjoyment of today's and tomorrow's citizens and visitors. Historic photos: Opposite page: The Rancho Buena Vista adobe home and courtyard in the 1950s. Top left: This 1989 photo highlights the restored fountain and gardens. He also presented the Vista Historical Society with a signed copy of his famous photograph of the raising of the flag on Iwo Jima. CasitaA School Center That Excels By Ray Huard

A group of first graders at Casita Center for Technology, Science, & Math dashed down a well-worn dirt path behind the playground, pointing out various plants by name. “Sometimes, we come down here and explore,” said 6-year-old Aria Lloyd. The dirt path winds its way through a nearly 2-acre schoolyard habitat, which has outdoor classrooms, camera mounts for photographing passing wildlife and a plethora of plants, some of which are harvested and used for soup or other dishes students make in a kitchen lab.

when computers in schools were fairly new. It’s evolved to become a school focusing on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math).

The habitat is but one of many features that make the Vista Unified School District elementary school stand out, including awards Casita has earned. Casita is home to a 2017 California Teacher of the Year – Jenny Chien. Casita Principal Laura Smith received an Innovative Principal Award from the Classroom of the Future Foundation in 2016, and Casita received a Golden Bell Award in 2016 from the California School Boards Association. Smith also was named a 2017 Hero of Vista. Casita also is one of two Visa Unified elementary schools set to become an International Baccalaureate (IB) school, a program with a rigorous curriculum that emphasizes a global outlook, learning by discovery, critical thinking and creativity. To qualify as an IB school, every teacher at Casita had to complete 28

training through the IB organization. Casita teachers also earned an IB Certificate in Teaching and Learning through California State University San Marcos (CSUSM), said Leethel Farmer, Casita’s IB coordinator. The way they teach is a dramatic shift from traditional classes. Instead of talking to students, the teachers prompt students to ask questions about how the world works, to follow a pattern – I observe, I wonder, I understand. Built in 1971, Casita has been a magnet school since the 1990’s, starting out with an emphasis on technology

Colorful murals in Casita’s courtyard trace the school’s history. The oldest from the 1990s shows the latest technology of that era with the newest depicting the goals of IB to produce principled thinkers, inquirers and risk takers with creativity, appreciation, creativity. Independence and confidence. As a magnet school with an enrollment of 588, Casita draws students from throughout Vista and surrounding communities. There is a waiting list to get in. Students are chosen to attend by lottery. In addition to the 2-acre schoolyard habitat, Casita has a botanical garden, a vegetable herb garden, a language lab, a computer coding lab, a kitchen lab, an innovation lab, and a functioning video news studio where students prepare regular news reports.

In the kitchen lab – new this yearstudents pick up cooking skills, using plants grown on campus, Smith said, but they’re also learning about nutrition, working on their math and reading and writing skills as they measure ingredients, read recipes and compare what they make in the kitchen to similar products bought in a grocery store. “We have a really inquiring environment,” Smith said. “We create the environment, and it kind of goes from there.” Casista’s coding lab, under Chien’s direction, also piloted computer coding lessons used through the school district. “We were just trying things out to see what works, what doesn’t work,” Chien said. Every Casita student, from kindergarten through fifth grade, has a Chromebook tablet to use. Casita has come a long way since 1971!
