2017 SUMMER CAMP GUIDE

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Who is watching my child? Each of our day camp staff have cleared reference checks and a national background check. In addition, all staff have attended a child abuse prevention course, completed over 24 hours of training, and have current CPR and First Aid certifications.

What is ACA Accreditation?

ACA stands for American Camp Association. The ACA has developed a rigorous and in depth set of standards affecting camp operations, staffing, programming, and safety practices. Camps that meet these criteria are awarded an ACA Accreditation. We are proud to be an ACA Accredited day camp, providing a safe and enriching experience for our campers.

What are the sign-in and sign-out procedures? For the safety of your camper, all campers must be signed-in by an adult when dropped off at camp. When picking up your camper, please bring a photo ID as a camp staff will check your identity with the list of persons you listed on the registration form as authorized to pick up your camper. Campers must be signed out by an authorized adult.

What if I need someone who is not on my authorized list to pick up my child?

We understand that circumstances arise when you need to add someone to the authorized list unexpectedly. You can add that person to the list on the day you drop your child off, just speak to our day camp staff at the sign-in table. WWW. EASTCOUNTY. YMCA.ORG

What should my child bring to camp? Campers should bring: • A non-perishable lunch (free sponsored lunch programs offered weeks 2-8) • A bottle of water • Sunscreen • A backpack • Closed toed shoes • Dress in play clothes • If your child’s camp is swimming: a swimsuit, towel and sunscreen will also be needed. Sandals are allowed on the pool deck only. • Weapons, drugs and alcohol are strictly prohibited at camp. Please note that the Y is not responsible for any items that are lost, stolen, or broken and will not provide reimbursement for personal items. Please make sure your camper leaves the following items at home: all electronic items including: music players, cell phones, and video games, jewelry, toys, card games and pets.

When can I drop off my child? Each location is open for Extended Care at 7:00 AM. We recommend dropping off your child by 8:30 AM to ensure that they are able to participate in our opening ceremony each day. In addition, many camps have field trips that depart as early as 9:00 AM. (In some special cases, field trips may depart earlier than 8:30 AM; however you will be notified in these cases.) Half day camp drop off is at 9:00am

6

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS CONTINUED What happens if we miss the bus?

If circumstances or appointments cause you to miss the bus, you may either meet your child’s camp at their destination, or we will find an alternative on-site camp to care for your child until their camp returns.

When should I pick up my child? You may pick up your child from camp any time before 6:00 PM, even at off-site locations. We recommend that you plan to pick your child up after 4:00 PM, as camp programming ends at this time. We try to have all traveling camps return to the facility by 4:00 PM. If you are picking your child up prior to 4:00 PM, please notify our staff when dropping off. For half day camps, campers must be picked up by 1:00 PM.

What happens if I pick my child up after 6:00 PM?

A late fee of $1.00 per minute, per child is required if your child has not been picked up by 6:00 PM. Campers left after 6:30 PM without notification may be released to the authorities or child protective services.

Can I get an age exception for my child?

Our camps are specifically designed to accommodate certain age groups. Campers need to be within the age range specified on the first day of that camp session in order to participate. All campers must turn 5 by September 1, 2017 to be enrolled in any camp designated for that age range. 7

2017 SUMMER CAMP GUIDE

What if my child has special needs?

No child should be without the camp experience! The East County Family YMCA is proud to provide reasonable accommodation for children with special needs. Please pick up request form at the Member Service desk. After completion, Director will contact you. Does the YMCA provide Special Assistance? • Limited - fills quickly. Must register prior to camp start date.

When do campers have lunch?

Our daily schedules are very flexible and vary depending on the activities planned for your child’s camp. The typical timeframe for lunch is approximately 30 minutes between the hours of 11:00 AM and 1:00 PM. If a camp’s schedule dictates a late lunch, time will be given for a snack from their lunch. Does the Y Provide Lunch? Free sponsored lunches are provided for weeks 2-8 thanks to the local school districts “Summer Feeding Program. Weeks are subject to change and menus are determined by the school program (the Y may not alter menu). Please notify the Y of any dietary restrictions.

Scholarship Program:

The YMCA is committed to making programs available to everyone, regardless of ability to pay. Please pick up a confidential application at the Member Service Desk or download online at www.ymca. org. This subsidy is made possible thanks to the generous donors of our Annual Campaign. Interested in participating? Contact one of our camp directors.

What happens when there is extreme weather? Our camps are designed to operate outside for the majority of each day. In the event or extreme weather, we have indoor space that we can utilize, however this will likely disrupt our scheduled activities. Although we provide many water and sunscreen breaks, we ask that campers come with a water bottle and their own sunscreen.

Transportation:

All transportation will be provided in busses. All vehicles are inspected on a daily basis, and periodically checked by a licensed mechanic, as well as the California Highway Patrol. Our drivers have Class B driver’s licenses and/or School Bus Certificates. They have completed YMCA training and have passed written and driving tests administered by the Department of Motor Vehicles. We strive to adhere to our transportation schedules.

What if my child needs to take medication during camp hours?

We are happy to assist your child with their medical needs. All medication must be doctor prescribed and in its current prescription packaging. Please check the medication in with a staff member when you drop off your child and fill out a Medication Release Form. Over the counter medications can not be dispensed by camp staff under any circumstances.

What happens if my child gets sick or injured?

If your camper becomes sick or injured while at camp we will do everything we can to assist them and make them comfortable. Parents will be notified when a camper is too ill or hurt to continue the day. For minor scrapes and bruises camp staff will complete an “ouch report” to notify the parents of the injury at pick-up.

Revamped and ready to go, these ultra-spirited fun-filled camps have a new design this year, full of BIG themes, BIG ideas, and BIG FUN! Each week we will have a different theme that will guide our activities and trips for the week. Set in the YMCA style of different crazy activities each day, your camper will be traveling on special adventures throughout San Diego: visiting theme parks, swimming, going to local parks and beaches, or simply having a great time at one of our extraordinary facilities. Go BIG. Go Traditional! Please note: Pioneer Campers do not travel, but will have special events on-site.

Have a bright and talented camper? Does your child have a specific interest or hobby? Or are you looking for something out of the ordinary and exciting? Browse the Specialty Camp section for something that engages the creative oomph with the traditional spirit! We have everything from sports camps focused on skills and techniques, to robots camp focusing on creativity and confidence, and everything in between!

After your teen completes one of our training courses, he or she will become an official LIT, and is eligible to enroll into LIT Placement during the remainder of the camp season. LITs will be assigned to assist our talented day camp staff with the daily operation of a particular camp. This program provides an excellent opportunity for teens to learn hands-on job experience and responsibilities, while still under the supervision of our camp staff team.
