After all, she is an erstwhile Associate Clinical Professor of Pharmacy at UC-San Francisco. It is there, where she was appropriately addressed on campus as “Dr. Whitney.”

She was, and still is -- at the great age of 84 -- an expert in her profession. Her love, dedication, and great respect for the health-healing

properties of medicines are what she taught others.

However, that same respect did not extend to ‘ageist’ doctors.

Dr. Whitney had gone on record as stating that she frequently felt “devalued” as an elderly patient whenever she interacted with health care providers.

On one occasion, she had repeatedly tried to have a valid conversation with a primary physician whose

mind was made up in prescribing a particular antibiotic for her urinary tract infection.

Whitney, the former university professor of pharmaceutical medicines, quickly recognised the prescribed antibiotic as not suitable nor compatible for her physiological constitution.

According to Whitney, the doctor – incredibly -- would not budge or even cared enough to listen to her concerns at the time – even after she cited her university professor-

ship credentials as an expert in prescribed medications.

No (mutual) and appropriate senior citizen dialogue of patient-doctor consultation transpired.

No approval to seek higher advice/counsel from a specialist.

None of the above was even on the table.

The reason?

As with 1 out of every 4 seniors today, Ms. Whitney clearly felt “devalued,” and “ignored” and “discriminated” against -- merely because she was an (upper-bracket) elderly senior at 84 years of age.

As she stated on record: “I was completely ignored and finally, I just gave up.”

Whitney had become a survivor from lung cancer and also from cancer of the urethra and became dependent on a special catheter to drain the urine from her bladder.

(Note: The prescription for her urinary tract infection – which she contested -- was later changed and corrected as an official mistake in judgmental error.

The alleged “ageist” doctor never took her concerns seriously nor seemed to even care. She even said she felt “devalued” as a patient,

Last January on a bitterly cold winter's day, a North Dakota State Trooper on patrol came upon a motorcyclist who was stalled by the roadside. The biker was swathed in heavy protective clothing and wearing a full-face helmet to protect the face from the cold weather.

In a later incident with a different doctor, Whitney was rushed to hospital emergency, agonising and intermittently screaming out in excruciating pain, with a different urinary tract infection.

In terrifying physical pain, Ms. Whitney -- the University expert in medicinal properties and their proper use – tried reasoning with the primary physician on prescribing “Dilaudid” – a particular narcotic which had proven great success with her specific past pain.

The young doctor dismissed her advice immediately – not even granting her the decency of consultation or even his professional reasoning.

His only response was: “We don’t like to prescribe opioids. Let’s just see what Tylenol does.”

Her ongoing suffering was indescribable, as she was left to – helplessly -- writhe in pain, and prolonged and needless torture -- often screaming out loudly in endless fits of agony!

This time, it was found that her severe urinary tract infection was also accompanied by a severe anal fissure.

“What’s the matter? asked the Trooper.

"Carburetor's frozen," was the terse reply.

"Pee on it. That'll thaw it out."

"I can't," said the biker.

"OK, watch me closely and I'll show you."

The Trooper unzipped and promptly warmed the carburetor as promised.

Moments later the bike started and the rider drove off, waving.

A few days later, the local State Troopers’ office received a note of thanks from the father of the motorcyclist.

It began: "On behalf of my daughter Jill..."

She is 9 years old. Her hair is the color of wildflower honey. She has a cherub face. Her name is Luxe, which is Latin for light. Her mother chose this name as soon as she knew she was pregnant.

Luxe has aplastic anemia.

Aplastic anemia can be serious. It means your bone marrow doesn’t make enough red blood cells. One of the symptoms is easy bruising.

Another symptom is that infections last way too long.

If you have aplastic anemia, there are medicines that might help you.

But your main treatment option is a bone marrow transplant. Which is a frightening procedure.

Especially if you are a 9-year-old like Luxe.

A lot of people don’t know exactly what a bone marrow transplant involves. People, for example, like me.

So I called a Methodist University

Hospital doctor in Memphis to explain the procedure. The doctor was glad to talk to me on his lunch break.

“Bone marrow is life,” he said.

“Marrow comes in two colors. Red and yellow. It fills the cavities of your bones, and it has a big job.

Red marrow makes your blood. So it’s pretty important stuff.”

Bone marrow is spongy, he tells me, like jelly. Just imagine spreading jam on toast. That’s the consistency. And chances are, if you need a marrow transplant, you need it yesterday.

“A marrow transplant is a huge undertaking. Especially for kids.

There’s a conditioning period of about ten days. The immune system has to be totally suppressed so the body doesn’t reject new marrow cells. This usually involves intensive chemo and radiation.”

The young attending physician had no real clue as to her level of terrifying agony, of which her plea for the appropriate Dilaudid would have – in retrospect – stopped the unnecessary torture and spared her from unspeakable suffering on her hospital bed.

Her pitiful cries and terrifying screams of unrelenting anguish, pain, and mounting infectious agony went unabated (nonstop) . . . for eight . . . solid hours!

The widely-respected UC-San Francisco authority of proper prescription medicines, Ms. Joanne Whitney, was guilty of no crime – other than just being an aged woman who – once again -- had fallen victim to ‘ageism’ -- which is now reaching new record-level cases in the U. S.

Whitney vividly recalls the episode: “I think the fact that I was a woman of 84, and all alone, was the reason.”

She sadly recalls the experience as (not) an isolated one, but a prevalent problem, which is common among senior citizens: “When older people come in like me, they don’t get the same level of commitment to do something to rectify the situation. It’s like, ‘Oh, here’s an old person with pain. Well, that happens a lot to older people.’”

“AGEISM” HAS PERMEATED OUR U.S. HEALTHCARE SETTINGS & SENIORS NEEDLESSLY CONTINUE TO SUFFER & DIE.

This horrible “ageism attitude” in healthcare settings is, tragically, a long-standing problem which is – just now – getting new attention in the current wake of the global Covid pandemic -- a pandemic in which our elderly population is at highest risk, age 50 and up.

We must take care of our elderly, in all medical scenarios, as they are the most vulnerable. We must never take them for granted.

HOW DID “AGEISM” (PREJUDICE OR BIAS AGAINST SENIORS) BEGIN IN MEDICINE?

Ageism began with incorrectly stereotyping older people as “unpleasant, ornery, always complaining, and not being of sound reasoning or not always making ‘good sense’” (Alliance for Retired Americans, 20 October 2021 website posting.)

Surveys and research studies reveal a sad saga against aging

Americans early-on, in our healthcare settings.

Such research clearly show that older adult patient care and needs: “Are not recognized and respected.

Or when they’re treated less favorably than younger patients.”

(https://retiredamericans.org/khnthey-treat-me-like-im-old-and-stupid-seniors-decry-health-providersage-bias/) RATIONING BEST MEDICAL CARE (IN CRISIS) IS FOR YOUNGER ADULTS BEFORE OLDER ADULTS.

Though this may not always be the case in all health care settings, this elderly bias certainly has powerful precedence in abundant cases (in years past), viz. in the time of critical emergency shortages and the necessitation of rationing medical care when supplies, etc., are greatly limited.

One research study example states: “In such crucial life-saving medical emergencies, plans for rationing medical care (“crisis standards of care”) specify treating younger adults before older adults.

Embedded in these standards – now being implemented by hospitals in Idaho and parts of Alaska and Montana – is a value judgment: Young peoples’ lives are worth more because they presumably have more years left to live.” (Alliance for Retired Americans, ibid) U.S. LAWSUITS FILED IN COURTS AGAINST “AGEISM” IN ELDERLY PATIENT CARE.

“Justice in Aging,” a legal advocacy group, filed a civil rights complaint with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services in September 2021, charging that Idaho’s “Crisis Standards of Care” are “ageist” (biased against seniors) and asking for a U. S. investigation.

SENIORS WHO NATURALLY SPEAK SLOWLY ARE OFTEN NEGLECTED FROM PROPER MEDICAL CONSULTATIONS.

In other instances, ageism is clearly more explicit.

Dr. Julie Silverstein, president of the Atlantic division of Oak Street Health, gives a real example which is unsettling and certainly not uncommon today.

Dr. Silverstein points out that doctors sometimes make wrongful ‘ageism’ assumptions without realising their own bias, such as when doctors assume an older patient who talks slowly is cognitively compromised and unable to relate their medical concerns properly.

“If that happens, a physician may fail to involve a patient in medical decision-making, potentially compromising care,” Dr. Silverstein said.

sea, vomiting, diarrhea, hair loss, organ damage, and a host of other serious side effects I won’t mention.

Things no child deserves to suffer.

“Some people recover in three months. Some people take twelve months or longer. Everyone’s different. But it’s a big deal, and it’s not easy. There’s a lot of fatigue because your body’s regrowing cells, and this requires major calories and energy. People have no idea how hard it is for a patient who’s in cell recovery after a transplant.”

Which brings us back to Luxe.

She just underwent her second bone marrow transplant.

That is correct. Her second. This is her second time going through hell.

The second time her parents have had to watch their daughter lie in bed, connected to tubes, surrounded by more blinking lights than there are aboard the Starship Enterprise.

The conditioning process was havoc on Luxe’s tiny body. She had a blood infection. Complications. She was pumped full of antibiotics. Her circulatory system became a veritable chemistry cocktail.

But she is a tough kid. Bone tough.

ARREST MADE IN CASE OF MISSING ESCONDIDO MAN

On 8/13/22, 71 year-old Stanley Stephens was reported missing from his North Broadway home in Escondido. Stephens was an avid walker who was known to walk in the area around his home every day.

The Escondido Police Department, with the assistance of the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department Search and Rescue Team, conducted an extensive search for Stephens in the North Broadway area with no success.

Believing that Stephens may be the victim of foul play, Escondido Police Detectives began an investigation into his disappearance. That investigation has now led to the arrest of 32 year-old Escondido resident Eduardo Zamora for PC 187(a), Murder. Zamora was known to drive a silver, 2015 Honda Civic, bearing California license plate 7MYW007.

Stephens is still missing and is believed to be deceased. The investigation is ongoing and the Escondido Police Department is looking for any information on Stanley Stephens and/or Eduardo Zamora that may help in the investigation. Carlsbad Police arrest two for robbery at Daniel’s Jewelers

On September 7, at 4:07 p.m., the City of Carlsbad Police Department responded to a report of an armed robbery that just occurred at Daniel’s Jewelers, located at 2525 El Camino Real.

The investigation revealed that two black male adults armed with a handgun and a sledgehammer, entered the store, smashed the glass display cases, and stole approximately $125,000 worth of jewelry.

They then fled south from the location on e-bikes. Numerous officers responded to the area where the suspects were last seen. With the assistance of witnesses, officers located and arrested 26-year-old Khaliq Jones of Oceanside and 26-year-old Gregory Shearrill of Hemet.

Khaliq Jones and Gregory Shearrill were booked into the Vista Detention Facility for robbery, conspiracy to commit robbery and weapons charges.

Khaliq Jones is on parole for robbery and had a felony warrant for a parole violation. The property and handgun were recovered. The investigation is ongoing and there is no further information available currently.

Boarded up windows, dry yellow grasses where once were neatly manicured lawns. Empty milk carton, wind driven and tumbling over the asphalt strip where once, a long time ago, freshly polished combat boots held firm, at attention, as a young basic trainee would stand in formation, awaiting the Sergeants permission to break for breakfast in the nearby mess-hall, at about 5:30am.

I think I may know that young basic trainee.

I drive by the old KD (Known Distance) range, a series of sand dunes that would create a barrier between the sea and the firing positions of thousands, if not tens of thousands, of young military trainees.

After the meeting I drove through Fort Ord, which is where I took my basic training as a young trainee back in January of 1957.

They had a special inducement for youngsters in Nebraska. Join the Army this month and you'll do your basic training at Ft. Ord, California (instead of Ft. Leonard Wood and/or Ft. Chaffee, Arkansas - each vying for the title of "Armpit of the World").

About 5 of us signed up and headed for Ft. Ord. They flew us out, then put us on buses. We marveled at how attractive and well manicured the lawns were at Ft. Ord. Later, we were to learn that *we* were the reason that the lawns were so well maintained.

Six weeks of basic training.

Not an unhappy memory. An exciting and interesting experience that I'm glad I went through. . .though I would not be anxious to relive it

It happened on Wednesday, August 10 just before midnight in the 100 block of South Rancho Santa Fe Road.

Surveillance video shows a man approaching the business office of San Marcos View Estates and setting it on fire.

No one was hurt. The fire caused $3,000 in damage to the front office.

Sheriff’s Bomb/Arson Detectives responded to the scene to determine the origin and cause of the fire. The investigation is ongoing.

The suspect is described as a man wearing a black and white flannel, blue jeans and white shoes.

Anyone with information about these incidents is urged to call the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department’s nonemergency line at (858) 565-5200.

see a beautiful military base reduced to boarded up windows, silent buildings with not even an echo of a memory, dead or dying grass, an absence of people.

Plans are afoot to make it a college campus (probably a pretty good idea. They've already started it.

Beautiful grounds, right on the beach, sand dunes, mountains, hills, plains. . .you name it, the land pattern is there).

Acres of prime land just waiting to be developed. I would imagine the real estate developers in Monterey County are fairly drooling at the idea.

I had been back to Ft. Ord once before since I attended basic training in 1957, some 39 years ago. I think it was around 1977. It was still an active military base then and my old barracks stood proudly.

Clean, well maintained. The husky noise of young men filled the halls, the showers, the squad rooms.

I found myself wondering how many young men went through here during the Vietnam War and never came back. . .or came back maimed.

I decided this was all stuff that was in my past. . .and life is for the present.

I left the base and headed back to San Jose to catch my plane home to San Diego. I never looked back.

Nubia Escobar, 75, wishes family/primary doctors would spend more time listening to older patients’ concerns.

This became an urgent issue two years ago when her longtime cardiologist in New York City retired to Florida and a new family (primary) doctor had trouble controlling her hypertension.

The senior woman became alarmed, scared, and fearful that she might faint or fall because the present physician seemed unable (or unconvinced) of her serious condition and concerns during their conversations.

Fortunately, Ms. Escobar’s daughter, Veronica, accompanied her mother to one of her appointments, and once again her mother voiced great concern of her low blood

pressure, heart problems, and seeking proper medical help (as when she was well taken care of by her former specialist, before her longtime cardiologist retired).

Thanks to her attorney-daughter, Veronica, they insisted and finally (but reluctantly) were granted a second opinion with an approved referral to consult a new cardiologist.

“That cardiologist rushed me – he didn’t even ask many questions – to a hospital!” she recalls.

Her new cardiologist-specialist has Ms. Escobar under proper diagnosis and treatment, along with a second specialist he approved for her -- a new geriatrician – who, by the way, also concluded that she was also “dangerously overmedicated by her family doctor!”

Whereas her family physician abruptly interrupted and ‘talked over her,’ Ms. Escobar is now in proper, healthy, responsible medical care by both her new cardiologist and her newly-assigned geriatrician.

But words were no longer necessary for the elderly patient, because her bright and cheery face said it all.

DATELINE: ESCONDIDO, CA. To respect her anonymity, a very close personal acquaintance of mine (an 83-year-old senior citizen of Escondido was wrongfully denied multiple requests for a referral to seek counsel and proper care from a specialist due to abdominal pain and discomfort she was experiencing.

Her primary physician just waved it off as nothing serious.

Her personal friends are strongly convinced to this very day, that her multiple requests for a referral to see a specialist were summarily denied without adequate and convincing consultations from her primary doctor . . . simply because of her age, gender, and passive personality – all of which parlayed into another incident of “ageism” – which led to not taking her voiced concerns seriously.

Without a proper, authorised referral from her primary physician, the 83-year-old senior was left little recourse: If she were to seek a specialist on her own account, without an officially-approved referral from many tattoos, and in later years, Pac-Man ran with digital music eating pills that enhanced his performance. The fault is not mine!

A specialist was finally approved and he found – via an endoscopy procedure – that she did, in fact, have a serious bacterial infection in her stomach!

This is a frightening and no longer isolated incident that is happening all across America in which much of our senior population is struggling against today – unnecessarily, and with great personal medical risks to health.

More recently, several weeks ago, while she was dining with close friends (including myself) we had, collectively, voiced concerns that during our usual conversations, she seemed to have memory issues regarding familiar past events, such as her wonderful cruise ship experiences, etc. which she dearly loved

apply to balls more than three inches from the hole. No one wants to make a travesty of the game.

Rule 6.a.9(k) There is no penalty for socalled "out of bounds." If pennypinching golf course owners had bought sufficient land, this would not occur.

The senior golfer deserves an apology, not a penalty.

Rule 7.G.15(z) There is no penalty for a ball in a water hazard, as golf balls should float. Senior golfers should not be penalized for manufacturers' shortcomings.

Rule 8.k.9( S) Advertisements claim that golf scores can be improved by purchasing new golf equipment.

Since this is financially impractical for many senior golfers, one-half stroke per hole may be subtracted for using old equipment.

She had to be reminded of specific events which she normally recalled, and we became worried that this might be the onset of early dementia (not uncommon today among the U. S. senior citizen population).

Once again, her request to get a referral to consult a specialist – this time for dementia-related diseases and evaluation -- was denied.

At the time that this report was filed to The Paper, her status moving forward is yet to be determined.

How many seniors needlessly suffer and die, merely because their concerned referrals to seek a specialist are inadequately denied by their primary physicians?

And how long have these negligent life-and-death scenarios existed, needlessly, for our ever-growing senior population?

And how truly widespread is it today?

As a whole, the typical senior is not a medical doctor, nor are they adequately trained to second-guess or even doubt what their primary physicians tell them.

And even if an elderly patient wishes to invoke their right to seek further counsel with a specialist, and that request is denied by their family doctor, they are often left confused, and alone, in trying to best navigate through the perplexities of an unfamiliar bureaucracy.

IRONICALLY, WHISTLERBLOWERS FOR SUCH ELDERLY NEGLECT ARE MEDICAL AUTHORITIES, THEMSELVES!

An increasing number of experts in the medical field say this national concern in negligent care of our senior citizens today is nothing new but, sadly, it is a stark reality that has yet to be more widely corrected.

In their twilight years, seniors are often docile and passive and do not assert their medical rights to seek and attain advice and care from a specialist, which can be a life-saving step.

Over the years, the voices from the elderly community have been growing louder and louder in finally speaking out.

And the medical authorities have joined their choir in chorusing and chanting for better medical training and sensitivity from family and primary doctors in regards to proper senior patient care.

“Ageist,” or “Ageism” is officially defined as: “Prejudice or discrimination against a particular agegroup and especially the elderly (and their needs).”

Shockingly, other medical entities and research data are backing up this claim.

KAISER HEALTH NEWS. Just last year, on 20 October 2021, under the topic "Navigating Aging," the medical website of Kaiser Health News (KHN), ran the disturbing – but common senior patient complaint -- in the following headline: "THEY TREAT ME LIKE I'M OLD AND STUPID!” -SENIORS DECRY HEALTH PROVIDERS' AGE BIAS.

Is this truly happening in skyrocketing numbers across these United States, or is this just hyperbole and sensationalism?

Medical experts and replicated surveys tell a horrifying reality which we can no longer ignore, or pretend that it does not exist.

Over 23% (nearly 1 in 4) of all Americans surveyed, age 50 and older, say they have experienced discrimination in health care settings -- which can result in inappropriate, inadequate, and dangerous care -- according to medical reports from 2015 up to our present 2022 calendar year.

As such, many seniors, ostensibly, suffer and die, needlessly, merely because their medical concerns were ignored, (carelessly) misdiagnosed, or not taken seriously.

Saving Lives, Reducing Crime

In 2011, federal courts ruled that California prisons were overcrowded -populations had to be reduced. As a result, Assembly Bill 109 was signed into law by Governor Jerry Brown. The state’s prison system was “realigned,” meaning the responsibility to incarcerate, monitor and track lower-level offenders would now rest with the counties, not the state.

80 percent of incarcerated felons have Substance Use Disorders (SUDs), and in the San Diego region alone, 1 in 3 arrestees in 2018 tested positive for more than one drug. But county jails weren’t funded or equipped to hold felons serving long sentences, and they lacked programs necessary to treat/counsel incarcerated individuals in jails and those under supervised release from prison.

Last year, I introduced AB 653 establishing a grant for counties to provide drug counseling and Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) for inmates under county supervision. MAT is an innovative treatment that uses medications combined with counseling that has proven effective at reducing drug overdoses. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, providing criminal offenders with substance use treatment cuts drug abuse and can reduce opioid overdose deaths by more than half.

The costs associated with drug abuse are incalculable. Crime, homelessness, broken families, suicides, are all part of the massive societal cost of substance use disorder in our state. We can help drugaddicted criminal offenders re-enter society as productive citizens by removing them from the cycle of addiction and dependency. MAT programs save lives.

We’ve taken many steps at the County when it comes to fire safety, including adding new firefighting helicopters, increasing defensible space, and increasing cameras in the backcountry.

Last week, we added another tool, the agricultural pass. During a wildfire or other disaster, the Ag Pass allows commercial livestock or agriculture operators access to evacuated areas to care for crops and animals.

Phase 1 started last week with commercial cattle and equestrian operations and managerial employees in the unincorporated area.

If you're interested in applying, you can do so, by visiting the County of San Diego website.

All other commercial agriculture and livestock operations in the unincorporated area will be in phase 2 next year in the spring.

Holding a pass doesn’t authorize an individual to ignore evacuation orders and it doesn’t guarantee access. Since conditions can quickly change, the final decision on access will be determined by law enforcement and fire personnel at each roadblock and within the evacuated area.

I have heard many stories during emer-

gencies where farmers or ranchers decided to remain on their property to protect their assets because they feared they would not be let back in to care for crops or animals. This is dangerous but understandable. The goal is with this AG pass, there will be better collaboration and trust between farmers and law enforcement officials.

We want everyone to be safe – and I believe implementing this AG Pass program will save lives.

Q: I recently booked a rental car with Dollar through Priceline. My car did not have a front or rear license plate, so I had to bring it back to the rental location that night.

The second car Dollar gave me was not the size I reserved. It was too small to accommodate my passengers. The following day, I finally got Dollar to agree to give me the vehicle I had booked, a midsize SUV. A representative told me to bring my car back for another exchange.

But instead of exchanging the vehicle, Dollar treated my exchange like an early return. A representative then told me I would have to pay for another reservation if I wanted a car.

A Priceline representative promised I would receive a refund. But Dollar said I voluntarily returned the car, which is untrue.

I have been talking to Dollar and Priceline for the last two weeks, attempting to, at the very least, get a refund for the days I couldn't use my rental. Both of them keep telling me they do not have my money and the other entity owes me a refund. I have tried disputing the charge with my bank but have not received any help. -- Vivian Everhart, Houston A: You should have gotten the car you reserved from Dollar. Instead, they handed you the keys to a rental without plates and canceled your next reservation. Come on.

But things went wrong on both sides of the counter. When you pick up a rental, the first thing you should do before leaving the facility is to inspect it carefully and take photos. Had you done so, you probably would have noticed the missing plates. Then you wouldn't have had to return your first rental.

If the first vehicle has to be replaced for whatever reason, you should be sure the new car meets your specifications before you accept it. If you had just said "no" to the second rental, you might have also avoided this problem.

(You say Dollar told you to "take it or leave it" and you had an appointment, so you reluctantly accepted the second rental.)

It looks like you had a prepaid rental, which means you had already paid Priceline for the three days you were supposed to rent the vehicle. So when you returned the car, Dollar simply rented you a new one and then kept the money for your previous car. Then it looks like it tried to push the responsibility on Priceline for fixing the problem. I think everyone was a little confused.

Priceline didn't fully understand your refund request. It tried to mediate your refund request with Dollar, but the car rental company

claimed it had given you the right vehicle. It had -- initially. But that car didn't have plates. Priceline issued you a $25 gift card to make up for the trouble. But you wanted - and were entitled to -- a refund for the two lost days.

I publish the names, numbers and email addresses of the Priceline executives and on my consumer advocacy site. A brief, polite email might have moved your refund into the fast lane.

I contacted Priceline on your behalf.

Priceline again reached out to Dollar, "and we were able to secure a refund from Dollar on the customer's behalf, which has been processed back to her credit card," a Priceline spokeswoman told me.

Q: In late 2019, I opened two savings accounts for my children at Bank of America. I have held an account with BofA for over 20 years, so I was able to set them up online quickly. However, since the balance was so low on each child's account ($150), I noticed that they would be charged $8 a month as a maintenance fee.

I called customer service about this.

They told me I'd have to go into the local branch for help.

At the local branch, a representative told me I needed my two children (ages 6 and 9) present. So I went back to the branch with my two children, at which time they signed their names to ensure they would not incur fees since they were minors.

After that day in late 2019, we essentially employed the "set and forget" approach. And then there was a big global pandemic, and the kids' banking was the furthest thing from our minds.

Fast forward to March 2022, when I received two letters in the mail from BofA, one for each kid's account.

Each child now had $0 because $8 had been drawn out monthly since 2019. Behold, my children's entrée into the American financial system!

I called customer service to resolve this error. A representative directed me to my local branch, where I explained the situation to the banker. But the local branch could not help me.

I am contacting you in the hopes that you can help me recoup the $300 that my children received as birthday gifts and earned at their lemonade stand through hard work.

Future Shortages Give New Meaning to ‘Rationing’

In this age of plenty, only those of us who have reached our seventh and eighth decades can recall when America’s civilian population “went to war.” Today a scene is beginning to form that will result in a new kind of war – one that will be fought here on the homefront.

Our parents and grandparents who survived World War II were “The Greatest Generation.” Here’s one reason for that moniker: Successful “rationing.”

World War II started in 1939. By the summer of 1941, Americans began to conserve food and send supplies to the armed forces and Great Britain.

In 1940, government officials warned of coming rationing for gasoline and electricity. Factories began converting to military production and mandatory civilian rationing was instituted.

Within a week after entering the War, 7,500 unpaid, volunteer ration boards across the nation were formed. Tires were first to be rationed. Each family received an allotment of tires. A shortage of natural rubber ensued since the Japanese had conquered the rubberproducing regions of Southeast Asia.

The rationing experienced during the WWII pales in comparison to those vital shortages looming in our not toodistance future. Here in the West we’re running out of water. The hydro-generation of electricity from Lake Mead and Lake Powell is in danger as water levels drop close to below turbine effectiveness. Blackouts are sure to follow and they’ll be more than four-hour inconvenient power “rolling.” The vital Colorado River’s flow into those two lakes is threatening to devastate the needed irrigation for California’s and Arizona’s food production . As the Colorado River’s precious water supply continues to lessen, growing cities like Las Vegas and heavily populated California regions are in danger of drying up. The rationing of water is more than a distinct possibility.

In 1940, government officials had warned of coming rationing for gasoline and electricity. Factories began converting to military production and mandatory civilian rationing was instituted.

And that brings us to transportation.

With our supply of electricity in jeopardy, how are we going to generate power for all those electric cars we’re told we must have by the next decade?

Recently, here in California, electric cars owners were asked not to plug for recharging during high-use hours.

Although we have plenty of readily available energy sources in the ground, the present halt of pipeline contruction, drilling, fracking, and mining for oil, natural gas, coal and a number of other strategic fuels only exacerbates the situation. Gasoline rationing, as well as

heating by natural gas looms in our near future. A simple change in policy and attitude in Washington can once again make us energy independent.

During WWII, Ration books were issued through more than 100,000 schoolteachers, PTA groups, and other volunteers. A national speed limit of 35 miles per hour was imposed to save fuel and tires. Later that month volunteers began distributing gasoline cards by classification. To get qualified for gas rationing stamps, civilians had to appear before a local rationing board.

How far behind are we from similar rationing? Will today’s public accept such restrictions?

Windshield qualification stickers were issued: an "A" sticker was the lowest priority for gasoline. It entitled the car owner to 3 gallons of gasoline per week. “B” stickers were issued to workers in the military industry (8 gallons per week). “C” stickers were for those civilians deemed “essential” to the war effort such as doctors. “T” stickers were made available for truckers and an “X” stickers entitled the holder to unlimited gasoline for those of the highest priority such as clergy, police, firemen, and civil defense workers. In some regions black market gas rationing was so prevalent night courts were set up to take care of the number of violators caught.

Future rationing similar to WWII could very well be placed on a variety of vegetables and fruits produced via Colorado River irrigation regions.

While reclaimed wastewater presently keeps golf courses and lawns green, in the future that could be a thing of the past. During the mid-70s, long lines of cars waiting for gas, some running dry before getting to the pump. Such rationing could be in our not-too-distant future. Drilling rigs and pipelines can eliminate much of future fuel rationing. California becoming an allelectric car state by the next decade is a pipe dream.

Today’s “on demand” consuming public won’t handle water and fuel shortages very well. Doubtful present-day consumers will easily handle drastic energy cuts. Rationing of fuel, electricity and massive food shortages are more than a possibility.

It comes down to a lack of water.

Fossil fuels are in the ground waiting to be exploited, but not water. In the next 30 years, much of California may be returned to a barren desert. Our future doesn’t look very bright.

Expensive “desalination” from the ocean may be one answer, but that technology on a massive scale is not in the foreseeable future.

Gasoline/oil companies will go away. Drilling for oil will stop. Say goodbye to OPEC! The middle east is in trouble. NOTE: This is one I wish would happen in my lifetime.

Oh for the day the OPEC countries would have only their 'sandboxes' to market to the world!

9- Gasoline will become "obsolete" - cars will be electric and run on Nuclear power. Oil will still be used for chemical uses, like the production of plastics, but this will sooner or later go away too, when technology figures out how to do it without oil.

10- A baby of today will see personal cars only in museums. The FUTURE is approaching faster than most of us can handle.

11- In 1998, Kodak had 170,000 employees and sold 85% of all photo paper worldwide. Within just a few years, their business model disappeared and they went bankrupt. Who would have thought of that ever happening?

12- What happened to Kodak and Polaroid will happen in a lot of industries in the next 5-10 years.. and most of us don't see it coming.

13- Did you think in 1998 that 3 years later you'd NEVER take pictures on film again? With today’s smartphones, who even has a camera these days?

14- Yet digital cameras were invented in 1975. The first ones only had 10,000 pixels, but followed Moore's law – that technological capacity will DOUBLE every year. So as with all exponential technologies, it was a disappointment for a time, before it became 'way superior' and became mainstream in only a few short years.

15- It will now happen again (but much faster) with Artificial Intelligence (AI), health, autonomous and electric cars, education, 3D printing, agriculture, and jobs.

In official technical parlance to substantiate this claim, herewith is the following: “Multi-year delays from first symptom occurrence to clinical assessment have been documented and attributed mostly to uncertainly about the severity of the cognitive deficit (47%) and attributing observed changes to normal aging (37%).”

San Marcos Fire Department secures important grant

September is National Preparedness Month, and the City of San Marcos is always working to keep you safe and protected. Recently, the San Marcos Fire Department was awarded more than $2 million in state funding for two improvement projects.

One project will improve Fire Station No. 3, located at 404 Woodland Parkway, to extend its 32-year service life with new building and personnel upgrades. The other project will equip all four of San Marcos’ fire stations with systems that remove exhaust fumes from the stations, leading to safer work environments with cleaner air for our firefighters.

This month, you can take a few easy steps at home to ensure you and loved ones are prepared: Make an evacuation plan, build a kit and sign up for alerts at readysandiego.org. While we never expect emergencies to happen, you can rest assured that your public service team is here to help.

I hate to say it, but I sometimes think that people like to use “grievous words” with the purposeful intent to “stir up anger.” Have you ever been in a meeting and think to yourself, why would he/she say that or say it the way they did. I have, and I feel as though the meeting just ended after that person spoke.

We have as a community a lot of choices to make that will affect our future.

THE BOTTOM LINE: These wrongful ageist stereotypes matter.

Many physicians, as well as older adults themselves, believe pain, fatigue, depression and dependency are a ‘normal’ part of aging. These older patients are less likely to seek health care for themselves, and if they do, they risk being (undertreated).

“Ailments like poor hearing or cognitive decline can brand a patient as noncompliant or ‘difficult.’

Studies show providers communicate differently with older adults than with younger ones. They’re less patient, less engaged and provide less information. And too often, treatable conditions like chronic pain or arthritis are dismissed as just a part of old age.”

umn. Lenovo, Dell and HP comprise over two thirds of worldwide Windows PC sales. Lenovo is the #1 seller of Windows PCs with 28% of worldwide PC sales. Dell and HP are next each having a bit over a 20% market share. Only Lenovo actually designs and builds PCs. Dell and HP buy their “branded” PCs from third party manufacturers, mostly in Asia. Each of these companies market “enterprise” grade PCs and “retail” grade PCs. “Enterprise” grade PCs are used in corporations, schools and governments. “Enterprise” specifications are set by the professional ITs who manage the “enterprise” networks.

“Enterprise” PCs are assembled using high-performance, high-reliability components. They come with the “Pro” version of Windows, multi-year warranties and are double the price of similar “retail” configurations. By contrast the “retail PCs”, with limited warranties, as sold on the Internet and in “Big Box” retailers like Wal-Mart, Best Buy, Costco are made with cheaper components to “cost compete” among “retail” buyers (home, school and small business) who typically have a limited understanding of how the quality of components relates to performance and reliability.

“Enterprise” users purchase their computers from distributors who also service the multi-year warranties. “”Enterprise” PC buyers typically buy PCs in quantities of hundreds or thousands with preestablished trade-in values for replacement at the end of the warranty term. These PCs are well maintained throughout their warranty period. “Enterprise” contracts often contain a contingency of “spares” to accommodate growth or

As you read these words, I can’t help but wonder what Luxe might be doing.

Maybe she is staring out her apartment window, thinking. Maybe she is watching the Memphis cars and people go by.

New life seen for historic old Valley Center courthouse After sitting for years in a virtual state of dilapidation, the historic but decaying Bear Valley Court in Valley Center may be on its way to a new life.

The 19th century building, which is marking its 140th anniversary this year, is one of the few surviving structures of its kind in the state.

The fact that the the court building has managed to survive for nearly a century-and-a-half has encouraged the Valley Center Historical Society and the Valley CenterPauma Unified School District to launch a restoration project. The court property, on Cole Grade Road, is owned by the school district.

The Bear Valley Court, originally part of the Bear Valley Judicial District, was the home and office of Judge Samuel Thompson Allen.

The adobe structure, which measures 16 by 20 feet, served residents from a vast portion of northern San Diego County. For those unfamiliar with the name Bear Valley, it was the original name of presentday Valley Center.

Fall Fun Festival 2022 at Alta Vista Botanical Gardens Saturday October 15, 2022 10 am - 3 pm - This festival has been a community tradition for 14 years and is a wonderful way to enjoy the beauty and diverse features of Alta Vista Botanical Gardens which are located at the top of the hill inside Brengle Terrace Park in Vista. The event is free for all visitors. Kids’ crafts will include painting pumpkins, macaroni necklaces, a beanbag toss, worms discovery, and other fall activities. Amigos de Vista Lions will sell BBQ lunch. Snacks and water will be available for sale.

This year’s Scarecrow Contest will be for scarecrows constructed at home. A: If a Bank of America representative told you that your kids wouldn't have to pay the $8 monthly fee, then you should still have at least $300 in your kids' combined accounts. But you don't -- they are empty. BofA took everything.

I applaud you for trying to teach your kids about personal finances.

I don't imagine this is the lesson you had planned for them.

The bank had every right to charge you these fees. Bank of America discloses them when you open an account. Unless you have some proof that BofA will not charge the fee, you should be prepared to pay them.

Your paper trail was not ideal. You didn't have a written agreement with the branch manager to waive the fees. You don't have any written correspondence between you and Bank of America. I just have your detailed account and an electronic chat session, which you initiated after contacting me.

When it comes to dealing with a bank, you should never "set and forget." Instead, you can sign up for notifications so that whenever your bank charges you a fee, you'll receive a text message or email. By the time you discovered your error, the entire account had been depleted.

This was a tough case because you didn't have any evidence that the bank agreed to waive your fees. But I also thought it was unfair of BofA to help itself to your kids' hard-earned money.

You can find the Bank of America executives on my consumer advocacy site. A brief, polite email to one of them might have resolved this for you.

I contacted BofA on your behalf.

A few days later, I heard back from you.

"Good news!" you wrote. "I heard from BofA yesterday and they asked me to come in, and they would help me reopen my children's accounts. I made an appointment, went to the bank today, and set everything up. The operations manager for my area deposited $200 into each kid's account. I could not be happier with this resolution. My absolute sincerest thanks!"

Dear Lyle Davis, I very much enjoyed the article

by Friedrich on Road Rage. It is such an important subject, and he did a very good job of getting the information the driving public and law enforcement need to curb the growing trends.

In an era of increased stresses, and frustration we all need to understand that we can't prevent road rage unless we, the person who was victimized, control our re actions to the driver who was stupid or careless with their driving.
