Milli’s Story... Milli Barnes

Foundation Degree in Equine Science and Management

“I chose to apply for the Foundation Degree Equine Science and Management course because there are a wide range of varied and interesting modules that covered all areas of the industry from the practical to the scientific theory. I am most interested in the practical side of the course and have enjoyed riding a wide variety of different horses. I am hoping to become a qualified instructor, after hopefully topping up to the BSc Equine Science, and the business module has given me the opportunity to learn about setting up my own business. The first year has been really good. We have had to work hard but we are fully supported by the lecturers.

Foundation Degree in Business Management and Communications

Pauline Krason successfully completed the Foundation Degree in Business Management and Communications this year. According to Pauline’s current manager, Claire Soper from Abingdon Resource and Wellbeing Centre, the course has been extremely beneficial to both Pauline’s personal development and her progression within her role at work. Claire explained that; “Having a member of staff studying for a Foundation Degree through Abingdon and Witney College has benefitted our organisation hugely as we are in a considerable period of change delivering public services . We have been required to develop a strong business model over the next two years and Pauline’s contribution to this has been greatly enhanced by her studies and work with other students.”

Katy’s story...

Katy Higgins

The (CIPD) Developing Human Resource Practice Level 3

Katy Higgins successfully completed the Diploma in Human Resource Level 3 in 2011 and is now working at the University of Oxford. Katie explained that; “It had been many years since I was in a classroom and I was pleasantly surprised to find out how much I enjoyed learning with a knowledgeable teacher and amongst a diverse group of people. My drive to attend the course, and continue with my learning, was to help me return to a role within the HR profession. When applying for jobs I realised I was lacking a suitable qualification. I have not only enjoyed the subjects covered, but also I now have the confidence to apply for HR positions again.”

Rachel’s story... Rachel Sharp

AAT Level 3 Diploma in Accounting

Rachel Sharp is currently completing the AAT Level 3 Diploma in accounting, Rachel told us how the course is giving her the confidence to apply for positions in the field, she recently said; “I had been a receptionist for 20 years but knew I was capable of more. I talked to an adult education advisor at the college which was a good starting point; we worked through various options in the legal, financial, and HR fields, before settling on the AAT qualification. I was initially nervous about committing to three years, but with the support of tutors, and fellow students, the time has passed quickly and now with only a couple of months to go I know I will miss it! The icing on the cake is that I have had a series of interviews for accountancy related jobs and have now accepted a position with a local firm.”

Claire Thomas

Horse Care Level 1 & Photography

Claire Thomas successfully completed her Level 1 Award in Horse Care at the Common Leys Farm Campus. Claire joined the course because she wanted to brush up on her knowledge and check that she hadn’t picked up too many bad habits that were compromising her horse’s welfare. This was also a great opportunity for Claire to socialise with likeminded people. Claire keeps in touch and sends us updates of the progress. On completion of this course Claire went on to study a short course in photography so she could photograph her beautiful horses. Claire is keen to come back next year to study another equine course.

Michelle’s story... Michelle Bowden GCSE English

Michelle Bowden completed her GCSE English qualification in 2011 and was delighted to inform the college of how the course has helped her progress in education and how being part of the college has contributed to her personal development. Michelle explained that; “Although keen to do further education, a lack of confidence had held me back until I finally gained my Level 2 English through the Basic Skills programme. Having caught the learning bug, GCSE was for me the natural progression. With the support of an outstanding teacher and a diverse group of fellow students, I was able to fulfil my goal of gaining a modern qualification. It also turned out to be one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. Spurred on by that success and keen to continue my educational journey, I am now taking an Open University Humanities degree course.”

Geoff’s story...

Geoff Rowland Diploma in Horticulture Level 2

Geoff was working in tele sales when he started his Level 2 Diploma in Horticulture in September 2011. His intention was to change career and to move into the horticulture industry. He was desperate to move out of the office environment and work outdoors in a more fulfilling role. This happened sooner than Geoff expected as we found him a job with a landscape maintenance company. He has developed a passion for tree work, completed his Chainsaw Certificate and is now working for an arboriculture contractor in Oxford.

Lisa’s story...

Lisa Cowtan Everyday Maths - Level 1

Lisa lives in West Oxfordshire with her two teenage children. Lacking confidence in her own maths she was finding it difficult to support her youngest child with her homework. She turned to Abingdon and Witney College having spotted an advert for free Maths lessons. Lisa told us that; “As a class of adults we have a really good time and all seem to enjoy it socially as well as being there to learn!” After just four months she successfully completed her Level 1 Adult Numeracy qualification and is now working towards her Level 2 qualification.
