From the Editor Written by Diane Tanenbaum nd

Welcome to the FALL Rendez-vous. This is the 2 issue in the new and vastly improved format. We’ve had very positive feedback from some of you and welcome more of your comments, compliments, and constructive criticism. Please address them by email to: editor@awcb.org. The Features Section presents a uniquely Belgian music competition – The Queen Elisabeth Music Competition. It is revealed by Larisa Doctorow in her article and it might spark your interest to tune in this Spring. This year’s Relay for Life took place in June and was a great success, according to Petra Gericke. Read all about how much was raised and how well the volunteers pulled it off! Another feature is the Museum Translation Group (MTG) – the group was as new to me as it might be to you. This group of multilingual women provides a service you might not even realize exists – and you just might want to get involved – I do! In an effort to better familiarize the Members with what’s going on “Around the Club” we’ve got articles about the International Study Group (ISG) which meets once a month at the Clubhouse and organizes diverse speakers on many topics. This section also presents several classes offered and to be offered in the Fall Season at the AWCB. You might decide to join the Power Hour Boot Camp – it looked punishing to me but the women seem to love it! Judy Furukawa took the photography course on using her DSLR camera and gives her impressions. Have a look around the Clubhouse at Mikal Edwards’ paintings. We’re fortunate to have such a talented Member! The Living Arts Section introduces you to her, the Club’s artist of the month, as well as what you can expect to see around the Clubhouse in the next few months. st

There are 2 creative writing pieces, one clever Tintin story by Ann Somerhausen and another 1 response to a suggestion someone had to include several takes on Culture Shock when coming to st Belgium. Olivia de Vos was the 1 to respond and, I for one, could identify with everything she experienced! This is to name but a few of the reasons to read the FALL issue of the Rendez-vous! Enjoy and let’s hear from you!

President's Message Fall 2013 Written by Wendy Warren-Schueremans Happy September! Welcome back to our returning Members and a special welcome to all of our new Members - we are thrilled to have you join us. This is the time of year when the AWCB reopens its doors to begin a new year - and what a year we have planned for you! For those who don’t know me, I would like to introduce myself, my name is Wendy Warren-Schueremans and I am the mother of two. I have lived in Belgium for ten years now and am married to a Belgian. I have been involved with the AWCB since I moved here and I am truly honored to be President for 2013-2014. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Members of the Board of Directors, for all their hard work thus far! This year’s Board is comprised of two returning Members and six new Members. Myself and Anna Hildingsson, our Second Vice-President are the returning Members and our new Members are Ericka Gibson, First Vice-President; Barbara Paulhus, Secretary; Stacy Shedivy, Treasurer; Wendy Vastine, Director-at- Large; Karin Smith, Director-at-Large; and Vivian Corriveau, Director-at-Large. th

To launch the AWCB year, we will be hosting a Welcome Back event on Friday September 13 , from 10am to 1pm. Join us for an informal luncheon, as well as our class sign up day! Meet the instructors who will be offering many fabulous classes this Fall. Also, if you are new to Brussels, come by for a tour and see all the exciting activities the AWCB has for you. Our new Board has come up with some great opportunities: We will be offering a few new courses and events and bringing back some from the past! Our new offerings this Fall include, Browsing Belgium, a Turkey Trot, and a Progressive Dinner. Some returning activities are our Crop ‘til you Drop, marathon scrapbooking sessions and our Beer & History Night. Please check our (new) website for further details on these and all other events happening at the club. You will also be able to sign up for events online! One of the biggest ventures we are taking on this year is hosting the Annual FAWCO Conference in March 2014. FAWCO, the Federation of American Women’s Clubs Overseas, is our umbrella organization. As a Member of the AWCB, you are already a Member of FAWCO and can take advantage of all the programs they offer. Please check our website for more FAWCO information or visit their website at www.fawco.org to learn more. Additionally you can connect with Barbara Paulhus our FAWCO rep for any further information you may need. I am looking forward to seeing you around the Clubhouse for a truly amazing year!

RELAY FOR LIFE, 15 & 16 of JUNE – THE AWCB’S SUCCESS STORY 2013 What is Relay for Life? Relay For Life is a festive event, for all ages, focusing on solidarity and fund-raising for the fight against cancer. During 24 hours, the community players of a city, town or locality gather together in order: • • •

To celebrate and pay tribute to the people who have conquered cancer, and support those who are still fighting the disease; To remember the people who have lost their fight against cancer and to support those who are still fighting; To stand united in the fight against cancer.

Sponsored teams relay for 24 hours. At least one member of each team must be present on the track at all times. The 24 hours is a symbolic gesture of the constant battle patients and their families must endure in the fight against the disease. Relay For Life is not a competition! It’s a gathering of community united in the fight against cancer. Relay for Life «International Community of Brussels 2013» was a huge success! We counted: 54 Survivors, 749 participants, 28 teams. Thanks to you all we raised €108.669,44 for the fight against cancer. The AWCB / Powerhour Bootcamp team made €13.399,00 and was the NO.1 team!! How All Began In 1985, Dr Gordy Klatt, an intestinal surgeon, organized the first “Relay for Life” in Tacoma (Washington, USA). During 24 hours, he ran around a track to collect money for the American Cancer Society. 25 years later, Relays For Life take place in more than 20 countries outside the USA (France, Holland, Ireland, Luxemburg, South Africa, New Zealand - to name a few). Through Relay For Life millions of volunteers around the world participate in the fight against cancer. During the weekend, a lot of different events took place, such as concerts and workshops. The event was opened by a wonderful Japanese drumming group, followed by Cynthia, a Brazilian singer, herself a Cancer Survivor. Besides the official program, there were many additional activities, organized by the different teams, such as face painting, pony riding, a beer crane, bouncing castle, a soccer clinic - to name but a few - as well as food stalls to suit everyone’s taste. It was a real family event in which everyone could participate. Futtatinni cooked a marvellous meal for the survivors who had a special program in a cosy atmosphere and thanks to one of our members, Eva-Maria Kummer, Kummer Wines sponsored the Wines for the Survivors
