Here students stood behind plastic dividers and chose from the hot meal line even in the makeshift Field House which was the second lunch space and allowed for greater distance in seating and safety precautions Lunch workers cleaned tables and students wore masks while moving around

As of March 24, 2020, the dormitories were filled with school books, clothes, and memories, but it longed for its inhabitants This day was meant to be filled with the joy of 400 proud Avonian Students, but instead the clouds hung meekly over the abandoned campus March 24th represented a mournful moment in our school's history

It represents the blatant beginning of Covid-19, a powerful plague which affected the world in its entirety It not only affected the family of Avon Old Farms, but it attacked each of our communities, households, and countries In a period which seemed disastrous, we were more separated than ever Little

of our school In April, teachers began conducting classes, reaching out to students and comforting them in a time of uncertainty, and preparing stimulating lessons The Student leadership along with Mr Detora and his support, worked to adapt the Avon Brotherhood to an unconventional mold

This summer did not include parties and large gatherings, but rather the

g complete quarantine for two weeks, prior to the beginning of school Along with consent to be tested for Covid-19 on a consistent basis upon return to school

Prior to summer, the maintenance and housekeeping staff were determined to bring students back on campus for the new school year With the perspective of an engineering firm they were able to better establish airflow, which would ultimately prevent the spread of Covid By introducing fresh air, they could dilute the disease and better fight Covid-19 molecules “The excruciating process of designing a system of airflow, purchasing the equipment, and installing it were all

"It's nice when I have to concentrate on essays for college and do the tougher work that I have this year, it's so much more quiet than past years

Along with these physical renovations, effort would be equally prioritized in other aspects of preparation Mr Wilcox ordered an assortment of disinfection materials from vendors which would last more than six months This order included personal protective equipment, gloves, masks, hand sanitizers, and much more Professionals were brought in to properly train the house staff about Covid specific maintenance

Modern exhaust systems were installed in the dorms and classrooms, and other detailed adjustments were made like adding barriers between sinks in the bathrooms “We have only a few boys in our hall in Eagle

The school year would begin with two separate lunch locations, where new students would arrive every 30 minutes. By August, the Health Department would introduce new protocol to ensure the health and wellbeing of the community Certain meals were prepackaged, allowing for easy access and minimizing the time spent in the kitchen The “ cup system” was put in place; if a red cup was present the station had yet to be cleaned, but if there was a green cup it was

For the kitchen staff, every morning they would sanitize their hands, have their temperature taken, complete a questionnaire, and then begin working Extensive precautions were taken with vendors as well, and the kitchen staff were still able to accommodate a variety of dietary restrictions The food services served the students, allowing for less direct contact and potential spread The morale of the staff remains high, and with their kindness and skill they nourished our bodies and our hearts

With an atypical serving style the refectory adapted from a sit down cafeteria to a quick and safer buffet style Students could eat at their designated lunch hour or grab food to eat outside Chef Hector and the Flik crew made two sandwich and two salad options every day plus cookies fresh fruit and chips In the warmer days kids left to sit down at the outdoor tables, or as the air got colder, the old wood refectory tables were freshly wiped and ready to host the next seating

Mrs Callaghan, our health expert and head of the Nursing Department, along with the staff at the Health Center elaborated on the plan proposed by the CDC This coming school year would certainly have its challenges, like having to wear masks, social distancing requirements, and daily screenings. Throughout the school year, the Covid-19 coordinator, Mr Whitty worked to update health protocols and educate the campus community on the best practices

Q&A with Mrs Callaghan

Q- How has this year been different for the Health Center?

A- First, the three locations (Wellness Center, Infirmary

and Isolation/Quarantine dorm) Two, we ask people to call ahead - make an appointment if they are feeling sick Three, even students with cold symptoms get tested for COVID and must go home until test results are negative and feeling better Lastly, our school doctor now does a combination of in person and tele-health visits

Q-What was most challenging about preparing for the students to come back to school?

A- The hardest part of this whole process was that public health guidelines were changing all the time Another extremely difficult part of the preparation to bring students back was the lack of good,reliable, rapid testing, which is such an essential tool to being able to

detect and contain the virus when it makes it way onto our campus

Q- How confident are you in our school's preparation, process, and precautions?

A-I think our school has done an amazing job of planning, preparing and executing policies and procedures that will help keep our community safe and healthy I am extremely confident

that we have a great plan in place to control the things that are within our ability to control

Q- Did anyone outside of the AOF staff become involved? We worked very closely with the Farmington Valley Health District throughout the summer

A- As the Director of Nursing, I had a zoom meeting EVERY single week (and still do) since the

beginning of March with all of the other boarding and some independent school nursing directors in CT We have continuously shared ideas, policies, research, resources, etc

We consulted with medical experts from Hartford HealthCare during the summer and throughout this school year as well.

Academics Adapt: In Person vs

Online

In-Person Learning: The Beauty of Outdoor Classes, the Music Department, and the Opinions of the Student Population

Instead of vacations and leisure, faculty and employees spent months over the summer to prepare for a very unique year

Academics was one of the sections of the Covid-19 plan that required the most work with teachers having to rewrite their curriculum in order to accommodate for the online and asynchronous students

One of the consequences of Covid-19 means that it is safer to hold classes outside As winter grew closer, however, classes outside because less appealing During the warm fall months though, we enjoyed them as best we could, having discussions outside so that we could face one another, looking for inspiration down by Beaver Pond, or out on the Vista,

and even just finding nice places to chat Jacob Perry, a four year senior, said "Having classes outside is something that we always had the opportunity to do, but never really did Having classes outside is such a nice way to appreciate campus and see how beautiful the Fall colors make Avon." Jacob's view perfectly reflects the views of most students on campus

Fall in New England is something that we at Avon have always taken for granted, but to have classes outside is such a different way to appreciate our beautiful campus One of the academic departments having the most trouble adapting to Covid-19 is the music department Music is the only academic department with a difference in the inherent risk it possesses when compared to

other academic areas like Math, Science, or English Because singing and playing some instruments means blowing your breath and possibly germs, Music this year is quite strange The change is quite pronounced for the Riddlers, the elite singing group on campus Charlie Wion '21, said "Riddlers this year has [ ] been weird, having to wear masks[ ], but Mr Lea keeps reminding us how lucky we are to be able to sing at all [...]Mr. Lea has also done a

good job keeping morale high The world right now is such a mess, so Riddlers is a good escape from that Huge shout-out to both Mr Lea and Sra. Things changed as we shifted to the viewpoints of online and asynchronous students. Although there were some students struggling with communication with teachers across timezones, Boyang Zhou '21 is not one of those students

Boyang is known for working months ahead if given the opportunity, and when the Yearbook staff talked to him on Skype back in late September, he seemed to be having a great time making the best of an obviously quite poor situation We asked him quite a few questions, so here is a transcript of how our interview went and what he said.

How does this year's online program compare to the Spring of 2020? "There

"Google Classroom has been a convenient platform for teachers to post upcoming assignments in an organized fashion

From a student's perspective all of our schoolwork is easy to track "To the right a sample of the new classroom perspective, new to some teachers and created to handle hybrid fully asynchronous and inperson classes

are benefits and downsides to both of them Let me just say that I like how I got more free time this year, [ ] that allows me to write my college essays, which is great But the downside is that my teachers, they're no longer recording their sessions so I have to do more self learning by myself "

Do you have to go to more enrichment sessions than you would if you were on campus? "Yes for sure, and I have to do a lot of research online too "

If this year were normal would you choose being online over returning to campus? "If this was a normal year then no But obviously things are different now so "

Are you planning to return to campus later this year? "Yeah, as of now I'm

going to return by January."

How is Covid-19 where you are right now? (China) "It's quite interesting, we have little to no cases in my area, but it starts breaking out again every once in a while around the country It's totally random but its not that bad at all "

Are stores and gyms and other places reopening?

"Yeah man, I hit the weight room every day "

Do you have anything else you want to add?

"Yeah, um I just hope that Veracross could be more in sync with Google Classroom because each teacher does their own thing Its very hard to keep track [of work] "

"No problem man, it was good to see you " Moving on, with the different circumstances some students are experiencing, there were some people who started the year online, but quickly joined the group of boys who are on campus One of those student was Tommy Higgins. When asked about which he preferred he said "I enjoyed being online due to the fact that I was able to enjoy the company of my family The downside of [being] online was that I thoroughly missed the boys and teachers Coming back to campus was overall a better choice for me "

Mrs Custer took her French 1 class to sit in her lawn chairs that she and Mr Custer brought in order to hold their classes outside Mr Custer used these chairs to hold class discussions outside One of the results of the Covid-19 restrictions is that the desks don't face each other, which make class discussions difficult Being outside on such a nice day is also really pleasant too!

Sports in a Covid World

The world of professional, college and high school sports have been shattered by the outbreak of Covid-19 On-campus, this is no different, and fall athletics look very different compared to years prior. With a lack of outside competitions for fall sports like soccer, football, and cross-country, spring and winter teams have gotten the green light to practice their sport in seasons outside their own In practice and in the locker room, Covid-19 has also played an impactful role with social-distancing and mask requirements constituting a pivotal part of any practice

However, despite these hurdles, sports are back and being played every afternoon and a sense of normalcy has been found on the court, field, track, or ice in the midst of anything but normalcy

A wide consensus which has formed around practices and the way they are being conducted is: Coaches are doing a superb job to keep athletics invested in the program Practices have been made up of strengthening fundamentals, working on set plays, installing offenses and defenses, and getting some good competition in too Players are enjoying this as Donald Brennan ‘22, who is a QuarterBack on Varsity Football, said, “...Coaches have the schedule very well organized, they [coaches] have a really good idea of what they want from us we ’ re just staying ready and in a time like this you got to do what you got to do, and everyone is doing a good job ”

How students adapt and embrace the new reality

When asked about how the summer affected the recruiting process, he said, “Those were pretty much the same, the only thing I noticed is the parents could not watch They had to sit in the parking lot, but they were good events, and I’m glad people created them during Corona to give us some more exposure in uncertain times ”

The experience was something which could only occur during Covid-19 and is a shining example of making the best of a tricky situation

The locker room and the camaraderie builds bonds and forges champions The atmosphere created during before and after practice often makes a team more so than practice, with this in mind, Covid-19 has thrown a wrench into this bonding process with social

distancing being mandatory to ensure the health of all involved This means bonding time like extended periods of close contact in the locker has been restricted. Mr Cugell, a soccer coach and history teacher, said of practices in Covid-19 times, “Coach Stensland has been really active in planning practices that are technically driven so that guys can space out and a lot of touches on the ball, working on some skills, and then also embed some team competition to get the boys some competitive juices flowing

No doubt sports were affected by Covid-19; however, coaches had a plan and with this plan, athletics -- a vital part of the school's culture -- was salvaged.

"The ability to play and practice lacrosse in the fall has been extremely important to building chemistry and relationships with new underclassmen In previous years it has been hard to get chemistry with new players because of the limited time in pre-season

Losing our season last year sucked so I m at least glad we have a chance to mesh as a team and bond early on Despite being committed I know I speak for a lot of seniors when I say that we aren t only looking to college we want to win this year and we feel playing fall ball will give us the best chance to be successful this spring if we have a season In this regard Covid has been a bit of a blessing " - Michael Callahan '21

ARLANDS- One of the most winter tradition is when the ub decorates the Refectory up the Christmas Tree that Faculty members and their families decorate apel was decorated so that ched the season it paled in n to the usual decorations

The Refectory especially was always beautifully decorated "As a member of the Nimrod Club I love decorating the Chapel and Refectory because it is so nice to stun everyone who sees it for the first time as well as because it just makes campus so much more festive New England Decembers don t always look pretty so the decorations help to make campus more seasonal " Charlie Wion '21

impressions incoming freshmen have always had of Avon has been the chapel Coming into Avon, it was the first thing that impressed me as unique.

While the brotherhood was enviably rare in boarding schools, the entire school coming together twice a week to listen to wisdom imparted by seniors and faculty was truly an experience which could be found nowhere else

While this integral part of campus life was scrapped during the early days of the fall, and the faculty and staff scrambled to get ready for the year, it made a return when things

quieted down a little in October and November.

One of the most captivating talks came from Henry Watson, ironically breaking the tradition by having a chapel talk as a freshman Henry spoke about his brother after a tragic boating accident the summer before his freshman year He included personal bits from people who reached out to him without having ever met him to make sure he was ok, and finished his talk stating, “Keep the brotherhood alive. It matters It separates us from the others ”

HOLIDAYS

Another iconic tradition was the annual Toys for Tots fundraiser. Every year the school community raised tens of thousands of dollars and this year was no different Community efforts meant even more as normal donators to Hands on Hartford weren't able to donate as much as a normal year or at all The school raised well over $14,000 just by the start of December. The most memorable parts of the TfT fundraiser were the raffle prizes and donut day.

The raffle this year had a number of prizes with almost fifty community members and seven local businesses donating gift cards,

Christmas Vespers & Holiday Concert

vouchers for homecooked meals, vouchers to have food from local restaurants paid for and delivered, a 400 piece poker set, monthly deliveries of home made cookies, and more.

Another unique part of the Toys for Tots fundraiser was donut day. With limited time in the Hawk's Nest, fewer food choices in the refectory, donuts were a welcome addition to the day's menu.

We asked some

students, Toys for Tots raffle winners, and Carter Grimes (1), Josh Hunter (2), and Aidan Patterson (3) responded about their experience and success with their tickets

Q: Do you like this fundraiser? A(1): "I do like this fund raiser because I believe Toys for Tots is a very good cause and helps a lot of kids during the holiday season It is special to know that you are helping out kids get what they want on christmas morning " (cont on next page)

Boar's Head

Christmas Vespers and the Holiday Concert are always highlights of the Holidays at Avon This year, because of social distancing guidelines, as well as the inherent danger of both singing and playing instruments both of these traditions had to be disregarded Both of these did exist in some form however, as a shortened version of Christmas Vespers was recorded and placed online along with recordings done by various music classes

One of the traditions that always leaves a mark on new students and seniors alike is Boar's Head Boar's Head is a traditional play put on by the senior class with the help of some faculty children and the Riddlers for the new students in December during the last dinner of the calendar year New students and some returning students eat extravagant meals, listen to the medieval music and the night ends with everyone in the Refectory circling up and singing Auld Land Syne together

A(2): "I liked this fundraiser because we are donating to an important cause and getting a possible reward out of it so it’s a win-win." A(3): "This is awesome especially this year because we got to help people that are close to our school and make an impact on their lives "

Toys for Tots was a huge undertaking for the

administration this year because of Covid-19, the students and faculty that made it happen had a huge impact in even more trying times

Traditions lasted, though slightly less formal and less publicized, from the pasta supper with head monitors and team captions as waiters, to

student innovation in helping others in need, shopping at Target and buying the blue raffle tickets at an armslength at a time

We all missed huge gatherings, but the magic still happened as boys closed off the year 2020

Love Wins: The Helping Hands for Connecticut Club organized this clothing drive for families in need in honor of Ana-Grace a Sandy Hook victim Student Faculty and Staff alike all helped by donating articles of winter clothing such as coats jackets hats gloves scarfs and whatever else they could think of

This January, even before our students repopulated campus after a long winter break, the art department began receiving word from a variety of art competitions In January, we celebrated the artists who were recognized with top awards across four competitions: The ASAP Young Photographers Competition, the 2021 National Art Honor Society’s Juried Exhibition, the 2021 Emerging Young Artists Juried Exhibition hosted by University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, and the 2021 Scholastic Art Awards

Evolving Curriculum in a Paused World

In-Person Learning, the transition to entirely synchronous learning through Zoom

The first semester included some students learning in person, some online, and some asynchronous The news changed every day but we were able to be prepared for at least one thing in our day- the schedule and academics For the final two weeks of the first semester, the entire community was online, with new and improved, engaged zoom learning and google classroom use

After a successful first academic quarter, we were more than halfway towards our goal of reaching November 20th With even still so much uncertainty about the state of the world, the student body willingly followed the school’s strategy which ultimately proved to be a success In a typical year they would adjourn for Thanksgiving

break and then return onto campus to resume the second quarter However with the safety protocol in place, they made adjustments to transfer academics to the online platform for two weeks Due to the pandemic in the spring of 2020, teachers were forced to abruptly refashion their teaching styles However in December 2020, teachers had experience and more time to better prepare

While some classes found the transition to online fairly simple, other more physically interactive classes like lab sciences, arts, and music classes struggled at first to design a functioning system which would continue the students’ education despite losing the value of in-person learning For other students, many of them being international, asynchronous

Despite having social limitations and wearing masks, the atmosphere within the classroom remained nearly identical to that of previous years With the collective efforts of all students, faculty, and staff, the community safely reached their goal of November 20th

By holding digital audio workstations, singing Avon style theme songs, offering new projects for Digital Media Production groups, the students took these opportunities and added their own imagination.

VETERANS DAY- FIRST CHANCE TO COME TOGETHER AS A SCHOOL

On Veterans Day, The Avon Old Farms community honored a fellow brother Andrew Peterson-Keel who was killed on duty in Afghanistan The school organized a 5K in cooperation with APK Charities, a foundation started by the parents of Peterson-Keel

“I've had many family members in the military so it was a good chance to celebrate them along with a fallen brother, sophomore Johnny Boxford said

The 5K kicked off at 3 p.m with every student gathering on the JV baseball field It was rainy and foggy, but students and faculty alike were ready to finally pull together a community-

The Fall season ends and Winter season begins with a few opportunities for sports teams to unite

Later on in the first Salisbury snuck another one by Callahan taking the lead 2-1 Early in the second period Nick Capasso added himself to the scoring list with a toe drag shot that whistled into the back of the net equalizing the game at 2

Along with the hockey team, Varsity Basketball found themselves on the road against Salisbury for a home and home series against the Scarlet Knights With parts of the team missing, Junior Jared Flaks and Nate Walters stepped up as they were accompanied by Rock Swann, Brian Dowling and Thomas Prendergast

Avon did find themselves cutting into Salisbury’s lead as Banks Monin and Tomas Predergast cashed in for points. Ultimately Avon couldn’t complete the comeback as they fell again 55-44

As the Winter Season moved on however teams were able to compete as things changed from November winter activities to late winter sports competitions on and off-campus Every week students did their pool Covid tests and so did Salisbury When both teams came back negative, the games were on and each player allowed to invite one parent

The One and Only

After much communication about fullteam Covid tests for Avon and visiting players, many games were scheduled and then canceled due to issues with the testing itself Despite Founders League being canceled, boys were excited to get on the ice, or on the courts to compete any way possible

Visitors were limited and fans absent completely The game on February 6th against Salisbury was more of a special event than the usual competitive rivalry

In November, good news was on the horizon in the efforts to finally beat the Covid-19 pandemic This news could not have come at a better time, with rates across the country rising exponentially, surpassing the two previous peaks in the summer and spring

Q&A - the "Bubble"

Snip-bit of conversations with Provost Rob Dowling- February 12, 2021

How has the reintroduction process this time around differed from the fall?

R D- Most importantly the statistics in the surrounding areas were more troubling When you guys came back in the fall the prevalence was very very low, and when you came back after the holidays, the prevalence was significantly higher I think the concern was, ‘how do we manage inperson learning, within the tradition of Avon, with predictable increases in Covid cases ’

So you weren’t surprised by how high that number [Covid-19 cases] got in Connecticut in terms of the positivity rate?

R D -- I wasn t You know Connecticut, like many other states, has many of the same issues While generally, I think Connecticut has done better than some other states, I think it would be naive to think Connecticut would be an exception So when we were repopulating in late-August or in earlySeptember, the positivity rate was around 1% and when we returned to school in January, it was between 6 and 8%. So to think we would be immune from those statistics would be foolish So we did the best we could in terms of aggressive protocols, we asked you to test before returning, we quarantined when we got here, we tested

several times -- once a week for four weeks -- we identified cases, we had protocols that informed us in how we would respond to all those situations I think, fortunately, all those planning sessions that we had worked out pretty well, in the sense that we didn’t have wide spread cases on campus, we were able to address the small number of cases without interrupting in-person learning

Yeah, that leads right into my next question; how do you think students, as a whole, have handled this second time around? I know from what I’ve seen, and what I’ve heard, it’s a lot more strict protocol-wise this time around

R D- I think our responsibility to educate students is to inform them of real world problems too, and how real world problems are going to be addressed on campus So I think all the things we have had to do as an institution have only been successful if there has been student compliance Now when students are here, I think it’s tough I think of the senior class who has seen a wide range of Avon: they’ve experienced -- if they’ve been here for more than a year -- what Avon should be, experienced it online, and now are experiencing it with an enormous amount of restrictions in their movements, off campus activities, what they can do on campus. That will certainly create an emotional reaction from the boys

Dear Avon Old Farms Community,

This year has been a continuous test of our collective fortitude, both mental and physical Last spring we closed our doors and sheltered in our homes and attended classes through computer screens This year was only the second time in our 94 years we closed our campus the only other time being at the outbreak of World War II In these uncertain and unorthodox times, the world so often feels upside down Amid a deadly pandemic, the largest Civil Rights movement in our generation, and an election filled with controversy -- we returned this Fall to our hilltop home With that backdrop, we, as a school, had to operate differently than before So too did the Yearbook

Like the new standards of scholastic enterprises employed this year, such as masks, social distancing, class-specific events, and the abandonment of traditional sit-down dinners so too did the Yearbook reinvent itself Knowing of the difficult year ahead we stretched ourselves opting for a new method as to how we wrote the yearbook Our articles became longer and more journalistic in nature; we created a new book which recalled all the valuable and venerated traditions but fresh in appearance, theme, and style

This year has been about coming back to Avon and making the best of terribly unfortunate circumstances This year has stretched our impressions of our school So much of what makes Avon the place we know and love is the culture Ours is one steeped in tradition, brotherhood sportsmanship and scholarship Each of these aspects has been fundamentally altered due to the Covid-19 pandemic Attending sporting events in person was off the table until late winter socializing in the dorms was all but forbidden and classes themselves were split between in-person and virtual students But despite these cataclysmic changes, we made our come back Dragged in by our most heartfelt love and admiration for Avon and what it represents to all the students, faculty, staff, alumni, and our families, we returned

This year ’ s theme is about embracing that comeback Originating from hundreds of cultures and dozens of countries across the globe, we are all drawn in and connected to each other by this school on a hilltop It provided a normalcy which allowed us to tune out the outside and commit to our passions whether they be academic athletic or artistic in nature To attend a place like Avon is a gift for us all When circumstances tore us apart we as a collective knew we had to come back -- and we did aspiring and persevering all the while

using reusable bottles The project encouraged school admissions to consider installing water filters for the Quad dormitories to further reduce plastic usage in school The Reusable Mask project first started as a charity back in October, when the club raised money to purchase the reusable masks by selling burgers and nuggets to the school community.

During the April 9th and 16th lunch period, the Environmental Club handed out around 100 reusable masks to the students and faculties Back in November, the Treeplenish team, a nonprofit organization ran by undergraduates from Harvard University and University of Michigan, reached out to the Environmental Club in Avon It proposed to plant 100 trees to compensate for the paper usage of the school During March, the Environmental Club conducted a dress-down day to secure funds that will be used to purchase the trees

After missing a year, the Nimrod Club returned to stocking Beaverdam Pond for the school community, Harding's Trout Farm stocked

Finally, Spring welcomed senior community service day Boys stayed on campus and helped facilities clean up the grounds A group went to the community garden with Mrs Perry, another group helped organize the various paving stones that are over in the facilities area Several groups cleaned up leaves and sticks around campus, a group helped trim trees around the tennis courts, and we ended the morning with a BBQ down on the fields

The New England Prep Tournament took place on a wet and windy May 8th at South Kent School The Club at River Oaks was a tight course demanding tee to green control for the AOF players Our 4-year starter and Captain Ben Boyd '21 finished the tournament T-3 with a score of 78 Another key player Bennett Masterson '22, finished T-1 (losing in the 1st playoff hole) with a score of 77

The tournament usually hosts 12 to 16 of the top golf schools This year, because of COVID, only 7 schools were able to compete We sent our top 4 players to the tournament and won by 2 strokes over Brunswick
