Beaver pond lay desolate

As of March 24, 2020, the dormitories were filled with school books, clothes, and memories, but it longed for its inhabitants This day was meant to be filled with the joy of 400 proud Avonian Students, but instead the clouds hung meekly over the abandoned campus March 24th represented a mournful moment in our school's history

It represents the blatant beginning of Covid-19, a powerful plague which affected the world in its entirety It not only affected the family of Avon Old Farms, but it attacked each of our communities, households, and countries In a period which seemed disastrous, we were more separated than ever Little

of our school In April, teachers began conducting classes, reaching out to students and comforting them in a time of uncertainty, and preparing stimulating lessons The Student leadership along with Mr Detora and his support, worked to adapt the Avon Brotherhood to an unconventional mold

This summer did not include parties and large gatherings, but rather the

g complete quarantine for two weeks, prior to the beginning of school Along with consent to be tested for Covid-19 on a consistent basis upon return to school

Prior to summer, the maintenance and housekeeping staff were determined to bring students back on campus for the new school year With the perspective of an engineering firm they were able to better establish airflow, which would ultimately prevent the spread of Covid By introducing fresh air, they could dilute the disease and better fight Covid-19 molecules “The excruciating process of designing a system of airflow, purchasing the equipment, and installing it were all

"

With the world in crisis, the Avon Old Farms community dedicated themselves to each other and adapted to the new plague.

ventilation systems that were installed have made this process easier” said Ernie Lowe ‘22

Along with these physical renovations, effort would be equally prioritized in other aspects of preparation Mr Wilcox ordered an assortment of disinfection materials from vendors which would last more than six months This order included personal protective equipment, gloves, masks, hand sanitizers, and much more Professionals were brought in to properly train the house staff about Covid specific maintenance

Modern exhaust systems were installed in the dorms and classrooms, and other detailed adjustments were made like adding barriers between sinks in the bathrooms “We have only a few boys in our hall in Eagle

en I have to e on essays and o much more q past years ” said Nick Karol ‘21 The Avon Old Farms community took it upon themselves to creatively and effectively minimize the dangers of this new disease

A design for food services was elaborately orchestrated to minimize risk, and still allow for thoughtfully produced meals. In July, Chef Hector and his crew worked to adjust the menu and organize the logistics and safety protocol A grab and go program would successfully maintain a constant flow of new students

Chef Hector and the rest of the kitchen staff have done an amazing job preparing pre-packaged meals to keep things convenient” said Stratton Pratt ‘23 Jack Ginter ‘22 added that “When I had

Mechanical Adjustments

some work to do during my lunch period, I just grabbed a sandwich and ate outside ”

The school year would begin with two separate lunch locations, where new students would arrive every 30 minutes. By August, the Health Department would introduce new protocol to ensure the health and wellbeing of the community Certain meals were prepackaged, allowing for easy access and minimizing the time spent in the kitchen The “ cup system” was put in place; if a red cup was present the station had yet to be cleaned, but if there was a green cup it was

safe to sit and eat

For the kitchen staff, every morning they would sanitize their hands, have their temperature taken, complete a questionnaire, and then begin working Extensive precautions were taken with vendors as well, and the kitchen staff were still able to accommodate a variety of dietary restrictions The food services served the students, allowing for less direct contact and potential spread The morale of the staff remains high, and with their kindness and skill they nourished our bodies and our hearts

With the help of an engineering firm the faculty were able to establish better airflow, which would ultimately help to prevent the spread of Covid-19

Mechanical adjustments to classroom, offices, and forms included air ducts 6 foot chair separations and air circulation systems

Meal Time To Go

With an atypical serving style the refectory adapted from a sit down cafeteria to a quick and safer buffet style Students could eat at their designated lunch hour or grab food to eat outside Chef Hector and the Flik crew made two sandwich and two salad options every day plus cookies fresh fruit and chips In the warmer days kids left to sit down at the outdoor tables, or as the air got colder, the old wood refectory tables were freshly wiped and ready to host the next seating

Mrs Callaghan, our health expert and head of the Nursing Department, along with the staff at the Health Center elaborated on the plan proposed by the CDC This coming school year would certainly have its challenges, like having to wear masks, social distancing requirements, and daily screenings. Throughout the school year, the Covid-19 coordinator, Mr Whitty worked to update health protocols and educate the campus community on the best practices

Q&A with Mrs Callaghan

Q- How has this year been different for the Health Center?

A- First, the three locations (Wellness Center, Infirmary

and Isolation/Quarantine dorm) Two, we ask people to call ahead - make an appointment if they are feeling sick Three, even students with cold symptoms get tested for COVID and must go home until test results are negative and feeling better Lastly, our school doctor now does a combination of in person and tele-health visits

Q-What was most challenging about preparing for the students to come back to school?

A- The hardest part of this whole process was that public health guidelines were changing all the time Another extremely difficult part of the preparation to bring students back was the lack of good, reliable, rapid testing, which is such an essential tool to being able to

detect and contain the virus when it makes it way onto our campus

Q- How confident are you in our school's preparation, process, and precautions?

A-I think our school has done an amazing job of planning, preparing and executing policies and procedures that will help keep our community safe and healthy I am extremely confident

that we have a great plan in place to control the things that are within our ability to control

Q- Did anyone outside of the AOF staff become involved? We worked very closely with the Farmington Valley Health District throughout the summer

A- As the Director of Nursing, I had a zoom meeting EVERY single week (and still do) since the

beginning of March with all of the other boarding and some independent school nursing directors in CT We have continuously shared ideas, policies, research, resources, etc

We consulted with medical experts from Hartford HealthCare during the summer and throughout this school year as well.

Academics Adapt: In Person vs

Online

In-Person Learning: The Beauty of Outdoor Classes, the Music Department, and the Opinions of the Student Population

Instead of vacations and leisure, faculty and employees spent months over the summer to prepare for a very unique year

Academics was one of the sections of the Covid-19 plan that required the most work with teachers having to rewrite their curriculum in order to accommodate for the online and asynchronous students

One of the consequences of Covid-19 means that it is safer to hold classes outside As winter grew closer, however, classes outside because less appealing During the warm fall months though, we enjoyed them as best we could, having discussions outside so that we could face one another, looking for inspiration down by Beaver Pond, or out on the Vista,

and even just finding nice places to chat Jacob Perry, a four year senior, said "Having classes outside is something that we always had the opportunity to do, but never really did Having classes outside is such a nice way to appreciate campus and see how beautiful the Fall colors make Avon." Jacob's view perfectly reflects the views of most students on campus

Fall in New England is something that we at Avon have always taken for granted, but to have classes outside is such a different way to appreciate our beautiful campus One of the academic departments having the most trouble adapting to Covid-19 is the music department Music is the only academic department with a difference in the inherent risk it possesses when compared to

other academic areas like Math, Science, or English Because singing and playing some instruments means blowing your breath and possibly germs, Music this year is quite strange The change is quite pronounced for the Riddlers, the elite singing group on campus Charlie Wion '21, said "Riddlers this year has [ ] been weird, having to wear masks[ ], but Mr Lea keeps reminding us how lucky we are to be able to sing at all [...]Mr. Lea has also done a

good job keeping morale high The world right now is such a mess, so Riddlers is a good escape from that Huge shout-out to both Mr Lea and Sra. Featherston for keeping the Riddlers program alive through such strange times " Another class that is very interesting because of Covid-19 is Biotech. "Taking Biotechnology with Dr Sanford has been extra interesting this year because of the pandemic While we are learning about the

process behind vaccines, [...] many biotech companies with vaccines [ are currently ] going through FDA trials This allowed us the opportunity to connect the material that we learn in our classroom to the real world, which makes for a unique and amazing experience, " said Henry Furneaux '21 John Zadrozny Warden '21 brings up another good point "Along with the negative impact of the coronavirus, [there are] some positives [ Having ] online learners allows in-person learners to review lessons by watching the videos intended for those who are not at campus There are [ ] more tools at the disposal of students on campus not only with their teacher but with resources [ ] I am so glad that the administration’s hard work has allowed us to return to campus "

Things changed as we shifted to the viewpoints of online and asynchronous students. Although there were some students struggling with communication with teachers across timezones, Boyang Zhou '21 is not one of those students

Boyang is known for working months ahead if given the opportunity, and when the Yearbook staff talked to him on Skype back in late September, he seemed to be having a great time making the best of an obviously quite poor situation We asked him quite a few questions, so here is a transcript of how our interview went and what he said.

How does this year's online program compare to the Spring of 2020? "There

"Google Classroom has been a convenient platform for teachers to post upcoming assignments in an organized fashion

From a student's perspective all of our schoolwork is easy to track "To the right a sample of the new classroom perspective, new to some teachers and created to handle hybrid fully asynchronous and inperson classes

are benefits and downsides to both of them Let me just say that I like how I got more free time this year, [ ] that allows me to write my college essays, which is great But the downside is that my teachers, they're no longer recording their sessions so I have to do more self learning by myself "

Do you have to go to more enrichment sessions than you would if you were on campus? "Yes for sure, and I have to do a lot of research online too "

If this year were normal would you choose being online over returning to campus? "If this was a normal year then no But obviously things are different now so "

Are you planning to return to campus later this year? "Yeah, as of now I'm

going to return by January."

How is Covid-19 where you are right now? (China) "It's quite interesting, we have little to no cases in my area, but it starts breaking out again every once in a while around the country It's totally random but its not that bad at all "

Are stores and gyms and other places reopening?

"Yeah man, I hit the weight room every day "

Do you have anything else you want to add?

"Yeah, um I just hope that Veracross could be more in sync with Google Classroom because each teacher does their own thing Its very hard to keep track [of work] "

There's no one system that all teachers are using?

Student Opinions

"Online learning is a totally new and special experience for me Though [I am ] thousands of miles away from campus, the internet bonds us together I hope I could return to Avon as soon as possible " Li Chengxuan '23

"

Thanks Boyang! "No problem man, it was good to see you " Moving on, with the different circumstances some students are experiencing, there were some people who started the year online, but quickly joined the group of boys who are on campus One of those student was Tommy Higgins. When asked about which he preferred he said "I enjoyed being online due to the fact that I was able to enjoy the company of my family The downside of [being] online was that I thoroughly missed the boys and teachers Coming back to campus was overall a better choice for me "

Online/Asynchronous Students:

what's your story?

Mrs Custer took her French 1 class to sit in her lawn chairs that she and Mr Custer brought in order to hold their classes outside Mr Custer used these chairs to hold class discussions outside One of the results of the Covid-19 restrictions is that the desks don't face each other, which make class discussions difficult Being outside on such a nice day is also really pleasant too!

Below a screen shot is taken from Mrs Magee s Chemistry class enrichment meeting at 8am EST These sessions were held extra every morning for each department to fit the timing needs of many international students Since their learning was asynchronous these sessions were essential to reconnect with one another and clarify concepts directly with the teacher

Another of the environmental issues that we think about here on campus are all of the wildfires out in the Western USA. The summer of 2020 was incredibly dry and windy, birthing perfect wildfire conditions stretching from California and Oregon to Colorado, with California even sporting 17 large fires according to the National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC)

Some of the students that are online this semester even had their lives in danger from the fires burning close to their homes Xander Ratledge ‘22 lives in California When asked about the fires he said “Fires have always plagued California Most people who live here know someone who lost their home, me included My home was recently surrounded by flames on all sides with only a few miles between us and the fires, to say it was

threatening would be an understatement It was difficult to focus on school when everyday I was making sure I had what I needed packed and was ready to go at any moment Fortunately the fires were stopped short of my town, but the smoke turned the sky red and ash rained for weeks "

SOCIAL ISSUES IN THE NEWSA Modern Conversation on Race

Despite the conditions of a worldwide pandemic, extreme rage and sadness ignited after the troubling death of George Floyd; a 46 year old black man who was killed by a police officer in the street With legal restraints put in place by the government to prevent Covid-19 spread, this health protocol began to limit the effectiveness of a social response.

The Black Lives Matter movement became a

alumni

matter quickly became a political quarrel rather than an asylum from racial injustice Arguments erupted concerning the legitimacy of claims regarding weather or not this incident was raciallymotivated

Some people determined that fragments of a viral video were from an unofficial source and could not provide conclusive evidence to determine the officers’ motivation However, across

cultural intolerance

Boys on and off campus had some feedback including more programs, speakers and structured opportunities to talk about social issues In the school wide survey in October, a dozen students mentioned respect, sharing cultural traditions more, helping the individual be heard and feel respected Mr Roller continued to bring programming about race and diversity. "The racial injustices in our country have been ignored for far too long” said Xander Ratledge ‘22, who attended Black Lives Matter protests during the summer

Alumnus TJ Shaw '17 covered protests over the summer including a violent and volatile one in Rochester NY after attending and photographing several more peaceful demonstrations in Syracuse "I learned the level of desperation which the people feel These protesters stood their ground against military-grade weapons with umbrellas leaf-blowers and homemade gas masks," says Shaw

As a young documentary photographer at Syracuse University, he said he was trying to document history without bias often seeing stories and other press coverage that degrade and dehumanize the police force as well as the protesters,

Protests surfaced in each and every one of the 50 states While nearly 97% of these remained peaceful, in many of the major cities riots became almost indistinguishable as BLM was used as a cover by unrelated fear mongers and violent anarchists

Joe Berggren ‘22 explained, “I felt that BLM riots turned out to be way out of control; I would see smoke coming from downtown Portland from the burning buildings If you got close enough you could hear gunshots Burning the American flag and taking down presidential statues and vandalizing them was one of the most disrespectful things I’ve ever seen ”

The controversy of the Black Lives Matter movement further perpetuated cultural divisiveness and political polarization

“Being there felt empowering, all working together, united, for a cause of the common good And I am glad I took part in this historic movement” said Justin Manafort ‘23 He continued to express his disappointment in the United States government for not having previously resolved the blatant issues of racism specifically in the criminal justice system and the police force

For many, being physically present at a protest raised issues of contracting the Covid-19 virus Yet in the age of technology, social media served as an augmentation for a growing revolution. However it posed new issues of manipulation and fake news

nation, debates about both candidates have been rabid and, at times, highly contentious; coupling the tenor of dialogue with the ever-fluid political landscape, the election is highly anticipated, if not nerveracking for many

Like the rest of the country, the community is both talking about the election and participating, with some seniors able to

Again like most of the country, many view this year ’ s election as a mess with either outcome looking bleak As Michael Callahan said, “I know who I support, but at this point, it’s a nightmare So much is going into it, and it feels like every little thing is super polarized, and the tension is going to manifest itself in an unproductive way probably ” Either way, the election goes, its impact and

An anonymous answer to a poll said “I don’t concern myself with the rantings of grown children This sentiment, shared by more than one student on campus, provided a voice outside of those who were immersed in the ebbs and flows of each campaign With few exceptions, students were mindful of the election, and choose to follow it and remain informed on the issues through presentations in and outside of class

Sports in a Covid World

The world of professional, college and high school sports have been shattered by the outbreak of Covid-19 On-campus, this is no different, and fall athletics look very different compared to years prior. With a lack of outside competitions for fall sports like soccer, football, and cross-country, spring and winter teams have gotten the green light to practice their sport in seasons outside their own In practice and in the locker room, Covid-19 has also played an impactful role with social-distancing and mask requirements constituting a pivotal part of any practice

However, despite these hurdles, sports are back and being played every afternoon and a sense of normalcy has been found on the court, field, track, or ice in the midst of anything but normalcy

A wide consensus which has formed around practices and the way they are being conducted is: Coaches are doing a superb job to keep athletics invested in the program Practices have been made up of strengthening fundamentals, working on set plays, installing offenses and defenses, and getting some good competition in too Players are enjoying this as Donald Brennan ‘22, who is a QuarterBack on Varsity Football, said, “...Coaches have the schedule very well organized, they [coaches] have a really good idea of what they want from us we ’ re just staying ready and in a time like this you got to do what you got to do, and everyone is doing a good job ”

The vehicle which allowed for spring and winter sports to be played in the fall also

took away a fall season for those who compete in them The feelings of sadness and loss were felt universally with hard moments for seniors realizing they would miss out on their final season wearing the navy and red and an opportunity to be recruited to play at college Clay Davis ‘21, a four year senior and member of the Varsity football team, felt this especially hard considering the implications it would have on recruiting, “It was

constantly extending deadperiods and a complete stop to in-person recruiting, making the already hard process, much harder However, some have gotten the news of a lifetime: They are going to have the opportunity to play their sport at the collegiate level One such Winged Beaver is Jojo Dean ‘22. He’s played Varsity lacrosse since his freshman year and plays for one of the premier club lacrosse teams in the country, Maddog

devastating, but I can’t say it was unexpected with everything in the Coronavirus landscape obviously recruiting will be a lot different without an eightgame season for film, but the coaches are doing the best they can to fine-tune our abilities and showcase our skills in a more combine environment.”

Recruiting has been a sore spot for athletes across the county with the NCAA

National Jojo will be competing at Georgetown University in two years, this is what he had to say about the process and how Covid19 played a role, “They [Georgetown] called me on September 8th, and I committed on the 16th They really blew me away, their coaching staff is really good and that’s what I fell in love with, also it’s an amazing school and that’s what I want from this process ”

When asked about how the summer affected the recruiting process, he said, “Those were pretty much the same, the only thing I noticed is the parents could not watch They had to sit in the parking lot, but they were good events, and I’m glad people created them during Corona to give us some more exposure in uncertain times ”

The experience was something which could only occur during Covid-19 and is a shining example of making the best of a tricky situation

The locker room and the camaraderie builds bonds and forges champions The atmosphere created during before and after practice often makes a team more so than practice, with this in mind, Covid-19 has thrown a wrench into this bonding process with social

distancing being mandatory to ensure the health of all involved This means bonding time like extended periods of close contact in the locker has been restricted. Of this predicament, Tyler Warner ‘21, a member of the Varsity Basketball team, said, “I mean it’s not bad, we just change and go, then find times outside of practice to bond with each other ”

The idea of out of season sports practices sticking around is meet with general excitement by athletes deprived of playing their main sport Additionally, the implementation of team lifts earlier and more often is also seen as a plus by members of the team With more attention being paid to physical health, yoga and other forms of exercise are becoming a more integral role of pre and post practices rituals Of the general change

to sports, John Zadrozny ‘21, a Varsity Baseball player and Warden, said, “Sports is a very important part of our school and it’s culture and it’s missed… It’s a silver lining in a Covid situation In past years, we have never been able to practice in the fall because of the restrictions by the Founder’s League It’s definitely a silver lining, the team’s been able to get together and go over things for three months which we would usually have only two weeks to cover before going to Florida It’s definitely been beneficial ”

Sports have been changed and most likely for

a long time, but that has not stopped our athletes from making the most of the situation The ability to practice and compete stokes the fires of competition and makes our community feel a little more normal in times of marked uncertainty Sports are adapting like all other places across Mrs Riddle’s campus and will continue to adapt until Covid-19 restrictions are lifted and semblance of normalcy is returned Until then, sports will continue to aspire and persevere

Covid-19 has also made the lives of coaches and how practices are going to be run difficult and requires a new

John Zadrozny '21

level of commitment and ingenuity Coaches have embraced this challenge and created solutions to the problems which lay in front of them In football, practices are conducted in waves with linemen working

Dry Runs

Left: John Zadrozny 21 walks back from his at bat Baseball found its stride with scrimmages and other game-esque situations Right: Linemen on both the offensive and defensive side, listen to small switches in the scheme that the coaches made Football lost their season due to Covid-19 and have been focusing more on the technical and combine aspects of football

"I mean it’s not bad, we just change and go, then find times outside of practice to bond with each other."

on a specific skill while another section lifts and the offense works on routes Lacrosse has done likewise and baseball is spread out with batting cage sessions, scrimmage type settings, and fundamentals Soccer, a sport which had its season canceled due to Covid-19, has found a successful harmony between maintaining the rigor of practice and ensuring the safety of those involved

Mr Cugell, a soccer coach and history teacher, said of practices in Covid-19 times, “Coach Stensland has been really active in planning practices that are technically driven so that guys can space out and a lot of touches on the ball, working on some skills, and then also embed some team competition to get the boys some competitive juices flowing

No doubt sports were affected by Covid-19; however, coaches had a plan and with this plan, athletics -- a vital part of the school's culture -- was salvaged.

Health & Hockey

"Practices have been good with Covid going on Since we can't have a ton of contact it puts everyone in a position to work on their own skills and development The coaches have done a great job putting practices together and our guys are looking good I'm excited for our team this year " -- JP Turner '21

"I think it presents daily opportunities to be seen by coaches with experience to help improve your game, on and off the ice," said Joe Berggren '22 about the ability to play hockey in the fall and the chance to be picked for Varsity off more than a couple days

what's your story?

"The ability to play and practice lacrosse in the fall has been extremely important to building chemistry and relationships with new underclassmen In previous years it has been hard to get chemistry with new players because of the limited time in pre-season

Losing our season last year sucked so I m at least glad we have a chance to mesh as a team and bond early on Despite being committed I know I speak for a lot of seniors when I say that we aren t only looking to college we want to win this year and we feel playing fall ball will give us the best chance to be successful this spring if we have a season In this regard Covid has been a bit of a blessing " - Michael Callahan '21

...by the commitment to being together in community and participating in a extraordinary experience in extraordinary times #communitygoals

...how well everyone has adapted to these bizarre circumstances in which we find ourselves. The boys have accepted the new normal and gone about the business of being at school with nary a complaint (that I’ve heard); the faculty have done their best to include online students even as they work with “regular “ classes, and the online students are for the most part getting things done

...am (not!) surprised and remain optimistic that when we all work together, we can keep our community healthy and the classrooms open so our boys can have an authentic Avon experience

that we are still here

..how well our community is adjusting to Covid-life. Obviously we are taking precautions to keep us all safe which have changed our daily lives drastically I have been surprised at how well the boys are handling the transition and I am mostly surprised that we have been able to remain Covid-free

First and foremost I'd like to thank my mother and advisor Matt Kowalchick for always supporting me throughout my three years at Avon They have been a huge help throughout my time here and I don't know what I would've done without them Above all however, I would like to thank my uncle Brett for making the Avon experience possible for me Without his financial help and guidance along the way, I would've never been able to have such a thrilling Avon experience like he did Coming from the Florida education system which is renowned for being pretty horrible, It was wonderful being able to finally experience engaging courses with teachers that actually cared and wanted to see me succeed Additionally being able to try new things out such as hockey or participating in clubs such has Red Cross has been extraordinary and they are opportunities I would've never had at a public school Brett has a wife, three kids, and a whole list his own responsibilities and obligations and yet he still found the time and resources to support me and fund my time at Avon In all honesty, I may not have thanked him enough for all he's done for me in my life so I hope that is some aspect, through this he realizes how thankful I am to have someone like him in my life

ARLANDS- One of the most winter tradition is when the ub decorates the Refectory up the Christmas Tree that Faculty members and their families decorate apel was decorated so that ched the season it paled in n to the usual decorations

The Refectory especially was always beautifully decorated "As a member of the Nimrod Club I love decorating the Chapel and Refectory because it is so nice to stun everyone who sees it for the first time as well as because it just makes campus so much more festive New England Decembers don t always look pretty so the decorations help to make campus more seasonal " Charlie Wion '21

DONUTS GALORE- Social distancing doesn't prohibt sales of Dunkin Donuts for Toys for Tots Quentin Cutler 22 and Sutton Kaylor 22 are among more than the 150 students who purchased a dozen for the charity

impressions incoming freshmen have always had of Avon has been the chapel Coming into Avon, it was the first thing that impressed me as unique.

While the brotherhood was enviably rare in boarding schools, the entire school coming together twice a week to listen to wisdom imparted by seniors and faculty was truly an experience which could be found nowhere else

While this integral part of campus life was scrapped during the early days of the fall, and the faculty and staff scrambled to get ready for the year, it made a return when things

quieted down a little in October and November.

Upon the return of chapel talks in mid-December, we heard from seniors Jack Glaspy, John Zadrozny, Henry Furneaux, Adrian Reed,

“Keep the brotherhood alive. It matters. It separates us from the others.”

Brian Namnoum, Tyler Phommachanh, Henry Watson ('24), PJ Neal, Josh Tracey, and others

One of the most captivating talks came from Henry Watson, ironically breaking the tradition by having a chapel talk as a freshman Henry spoke about his brother after a tragic boating accident the summer before his freshman year He included personal bits from people who reached out to him without having ever met him to make sure he was ok, and finished his talk stating, “Keep the brotherhood alive. It matters It separates us from the others ”

HOLIDAYS

Another iconic tradition was the annual Toys for Tots fundraiser. Every year the school community raised tens of thousands of dollars and this year was no different Community efforts meant even more as normal donators to Hands on Hartford weren't able to donate as much as a normal year or at all The school raised well over $14,000 just by the start of December. The most memorable parts of the TfT fundraiser were the raffle prizes and donut day.

The raffle this year had a number of prizes with almost fifty community members and seven local businesses donating gift cards,

Christmas Vespers & Holiday Concert

vouchers for homecooked meals, vouchers to have food from local restaurants paid for and delivered, a 400 piece poker set, monthly deliveries of home made cookies, and more.

Another unique part of the Toys for Tots fundraiser was donut day. With limited time in the Hawk's Nest, fewer food choices in the refectory, donuts were a welcome addition to the day's menu.

We asked some

students, Toys for Tots raffle winners, and Carter Grimes (1), Josh Hunter (2), and Aidan Patterson (3) responded about their experience and success with their tickets

Q: Do you like this fundraiser? A(1): "I do like this fund raiser because I believe Toys for Tots is a very good cause and helps a lot of kids during the holiday season It is special to know that you are helping out kids get what they want on christmas morning " (cont on next page)

Boar's Head

Christmas Vespers and the Holiday Concert are always highlights of the Holidays at Avon This year, because of social distancing guidelines, as well as the inherent danger of both singing and playing instruments both of these traditions had to be disregarded Both of these did exist in some form however, as a shortened version of Christmas Vespers was recorded and placed online along with recordings done by various music classes

One of the traditions that always leaves a mark on new students and seniors alike is Boar's Head Boar's Head is a traditional play put on by the senior class with the help of some faculty children and the Riddlers for the new students in December during the last dinner of the calendar year New students and some returning students eat extravagant meals, listen to the medieval music and the night ends with everyone in the Refectory circling up and singing Auld Land Syne together

A(2): "I liked this fundraiser because we are donating to an important cause and getting a possible reward out of it so it’s a win-win." A(3): "This is awesome especially this year because we got to help people that are close to our school and make an impact on their lives "

Q: Are you excited about your prize and how will you spend it/share it/etc with whom? A(1): "I am very excited about my prize. I got the 25 dollars to Moe's Southwest Grill and I will be sharing it with my family for a

lunch when I get home!"

A(2): "I already used my prize I was excited about it because I normally don’t win raffles." A(3): "I am excited because I had never won in my two years prior " We asked Joe Berggren '22 what he thought the most coveted prize was this year as well as what he thinks about Toys For Tots "I think that the prize that all the boys want is either the homemade brownies or the crisp 100 dollar bill I believe that the fundraiser is a great way to get all the boys to help other kids in the area," said Berggren

Toys for Tots was a huge undertaking for the

administration this year because of Covid-19, the students and faculty that made it happen had a huge impact in even more trying times

Traditions lasted, though slightly less formal and less publicized, from the pasta supper with head monitors and team captions as waiters, to

student innovation in helping others in need, shopping at Target and buying the blue raffle tickets at an armslength at a time

We all missed huge gatherings, but the magic still happened as boys closed off the year 2020

Academic In-Person and Online - Winter - Story by Maximilian Cohen photos by staff and Hobie Jamison

Evolving Curriculum in a Paused World

In-Person Learning, the transition to entirely synchronous learning through Zoom

The first semester included some students learning in person, some online, and some asynchronous The news changed every day but we were able to be prepared for at least one thing in our day- the schedule and academics For the final two weeks of the first semester, the entire community was online, with new and improved, engaged zoom learning and google classroom use

After a successful first academic quarter, we were more than halfway towards our goal of reaching November 20th With even still so much uncertainty about the state of the world, the student body willingly followed the school’s strategy which ultimately proved to be a success In a typical year they would adjourn for Thanksgiving

break and then return onto campus to resume the second quarter However with the safety protocol in place, they made adjustments to transfer academics to the online platform for two weeks Due to the pandemic in the spring of 2020, teachers were forced to abruptly refashion their teaching styles However in December 2020, teachers had experience and more time to better prepare

While some classes found the transition to online fairly simple, other more physically interactive classes like lab sciences, arts, and music classes struggled at first to design a functioning system which would continue the students’ education despite losing the value of in-person learning For other students, many of them being international, asynchronous

online classes had become a new normal

Despite having social limitations and wearing masks, the atmosphere within the classroom remained nearly identical to that of previous years With the collective efforts of all students, faculty, and staff, the community safely reached their goal of November 20th

we had minimal time, we focused on repertoire that would help the students with skill development, be appropriate for the Holidays, and be attainable in a four week window The students prepared and recorded a holiday concert and it was sent forth to the communications department as part of their Alumni and Family digital Christmas card, ”said Raposo

successfully with no Covid outbreak

HOW CLASSES KEPT MOVING

Within the music department, classes were quite different for the proportion of the semester done online Mr Raposo explained the challenges that his department faces, “Over the course of Semester 1 we had to adjust the manner in which we presented our concert material for performing ensembles As

The department focused on how to be productive despite the many restrictions of a pandemic Jack Ginter, a Junior day student said “Mr Rap did a really great job transferring the work we did in jazz class to what we were able to do at home We would have an assignment to work on every week and we were able to collaborate with our classmates and create music together in a way we haven't done before ”

"I'd rather be in-person for my arts classes, but working online for other academics is better since I can adapt my style and timing."

By holding digital audio workstations, singing Avon style theme songs, offering new projects for Digital Media Production groups, the students took these opportunities and added their own imagination.

The visual arts took advantage of online learning by assigning short projects Boys were assigned to interview and document a person in their family for photography, AP art created paintings or drawings illustrating a typical scene from teenage life and Drawing classes created food still lives

In English classes, there was a brand new conversation regarding how to approach online classes The teachers began to understand which activities would maximize productivity and which activities would be less approachable online In Mr Hodgson’s sophomore English class, “We would write a very short story from a prompt and then read it out loud It was super fun to write and hear other stories from your friends” said

WELL-EQUIPPED- During the two weeks of online learning in which the entire community was online, students created their own environment at home where they could be productive and continue their education Also shown on the right is a representation of a typical zoom class setup in which the teacher and students can all see one another through the page setup while working or taking notes Pictured here workspace photo by Ryan Zappone 23

Dr Sanford's Biology class included new lab exercises and note taking Mrs Custer was able to practice speaking French with

Freddy Pulver Activities like these focused on maintaining the brotherhood despite being countries apart Through Zoom and with its accessible feature, teachers were able to bring back Harkness table style conversations

Ms Moyer’s junior English class focused on the highly acclaimed novel The Great Gatsby and all of its complexities Each student was able to pick an individual

a collection of resources online from the school library They questioned the traditional interpretations and offered the class their own subjective understanding

The History department led by Mr Cugell followed his example for how to remain on schedule in order to complete the material by the end of the quarter. The advanced placement classes

tests to more interactive writing assignments Other history classes chose to continue with regular tests and quizzes, given to students during regular meeting times and either being monitored of through lock-down browser services with time stamps Mr Custer’s Advanced Placement World history class “ was done really well via zoom We focused heavily on student presentations, stern conversations, and utilizing what we had in front of us I thought it worked exceedingly smoothly[ ]” said William Goldman

motif to study throughout the reading, and eventually present through zoom to their entire class “We had deep conversations about the symbols presented throughout F Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby We then chose a symbol from the book and did a partner presentation on the significance of that symbol”, Sutton Kaylor explained Ms Moyer’s students were able to access

understood that their final exam would look much different The college board had already made changes to the previous year exam, and the curriculum inside the classroom would need to conform with the new arrangement Mr Cugell’s students were given access to document based question resources, as the priorities shifted from advanced placement style

Science classes were left in a quite unique predicament Courses offered in the science building are based around first hand experimentation and lab activities Moving these classes online was about more than engagement, but rather acquiring skills essential to these courses Ms Harrington, a physics teacher used Phet Simulations online to continue these lab exercises “During our time online things oftentimes felt weird Doing any school work from home is difficult because of the distractions and lack of

structure which students deal with," said Tommy Higgins '23

Other science teachers and most math teachers were able to record videos of themselves giving lessons from within the classroom or perform the laps over zoom Opennote tests, “take home” style tests, and projects became a new medium for learning

With the continuation of a worldwide pandemic, teachers would be forced to engage with their students in a completely different way More than anything, the connection between students and teachers never hesitated. Teachers remained in contact with students all over the world to make them feel safe and enforce healthy learning and living habits

VETERANS DAY- FIRST CHANCE TO COME TOGETHER AS A SCHOOL

On Veterans Day, The Avon Old Farms community honored a fellow brother Andrew Peterson-Keel who was killed on duty in Afghanistan The school organized a 5K in cooperation with APK Charities, a foundation started by the parents of Peterson-Keel

“I've had many family members in the military so it was a good chance to celebrate them along with a fallen brother, sophomore Johnny Boxford said

The 5K kicked off at 3 p.m with every student gathering on the JV baseball field It was rainy and foggy, but students and faculty alike were ready to finally pull together a community-

sponsored and communityattended event given the weeks previous avoiding contact The school was invited to walk, or run, and to add a ruck-sack or backpack to mimic the weight that recruits would wear in training

It was there on the fields where each team would take off from the starting line in groups to maintain social distancing The first team to go was the cross country team along with any other competitive runner From there each sport would follow behind The first 20 students would receive a challenge coin from the Pedersen-Keel unit Avon teacher John Bourgault anticipates this to be an annual event In total 400 runners took part in this event Like Boxford, many students were able to pay

At the end of the day, the Avon Community raised over $300 dollars for the charity Peterson-Keel's parents attended the Ruck and the ceremony and were given the donation but touched more so by the community spirit in their son's name

swing, the Founders League decided to cancel their Fall athletic season As hard as it was for all of the boys, it was even harder for the seniors as they could not play their final games as a Winged Beaver

Throughout the Fall, athletes participated in skill training with their teams This allowed them to get exercise every day while staying safe from COVID-19 There was light at the end of the tunnel

The Fall season ends and Winter season begins with a few opportunities for sports teams to unite

teams created time and space to create chances Two and a half minutes into the game, Senior Tim Heinke ripped a laser from the blue line putting Avon on top early 1-0

For the next five minutes both teams battled hard as Avon s goalie Senior Conner Callahan made some incredible saves on shots that were tipped in front. For most of the beginning of the second period, Avon dominated the game creating chance after chance but it was Salisbury who put the puck into the net tying the game at 1-1

This did not phase Avon one bit as Sophomore Nick Capasso tied the game on a beautiful feed from Jake Bongo A few minutes later Heinke found the back of the net again putting Avon on

Brazil '22

top From there it was all Avon as Jake Bongo and Paul Davey both scored Despite another two goals from Salisbury Avon held onto the victory 5-3

For the final game of the series Avon stayed home trying to win and take the series win Like the first two games both teams created scoring chances as Heinke capitalized on one early putting Avon up early 1-0 Salisbury answered back quickly tying the game back up at 1

Later on in the first Salisbury snuck another one by Callahan taking the lead 2-1 Early in the second period Nick Capasso added himself to the scoring list with a toe drag shot that whistled into the back of the net equalizing the game at 2

From there Salisbury scored the next two goals taking a 4-

2 lead. As Salisbury looked to salt the game, Senior Brendan Williams had other plans as he cut the lead down to one goal

After that, Salisbury ran away with the game scoring two more goals Although Avon added another goal, they could not complete the comeback as they dropped the final game 6-4 Despite the series loss players enjoyed the competition “It was nice to get out on the ice especially with a new team They have all been really helpful in helping me adjust to a new team and school,” Conner Brazil '22 said.

ON THE COURT

Along with the hockey team, Varsity Basketball found themselves on the road against Salisbury for a home and home series against the Scarlet Knights With parts of the team missing, Junior Jared Flaks and Nate Walters stepped up as they were accompanied by Rock Swann, Brian Dowling and Thomas Prendergast

“It was great to finally put our hard work to the test against Salisbury, Flaks said

Avon did start strong as Walters hit from three point land to kick the game off Later Flaks dumped the ball

off to Walters scoring again for Avon “We were working so hard every day on our chemistry it was really great to see it all come together on the court,” Flaks said

Ultimately Avon dropped the first game of the series 66-

40 as Nate Walters led the scoring with 13 points hitting 4of 5 from beyond the Arc Flaks had himself a solid game as well registering 9 points

The next day Avon hosted Salisbury in a revenge match The home court advantage felt nice as they opened up on a scoring rampage as Rock Swan opened up with a 3 On defense they forced turnovers which quickly led them to points

Salisbury unfortunately had answers of their own despite the turnovers They kept Avon within one possession for most of the first half. In the second half Salisbury found their strength under the basket as they scored off second chances often

Avon did find themselves cutting into Salisbury’s lead as Banks Monin and Tomas Predergast cashed in for points. Ultimately Avon couldn’t complete the comeback as they fell again 55-44

Soccer Scrimmages

""It was a definitely a privilege to be able to play contact soccer during these times Very few schools are able to do the same and none of us took that for granted My goal this season was to make Varsity and improve my technical skills and footwork," said Quentin Cutler '22

"Being able to play in a time when many others couldn't was an experience I'm grateful for Training together allowed me and others to improve on technical skills and other strategies Although not playing a full season, a game against great competition revived our spirits and allowed for a sense of normalcy " said Peter Siana '22

what's your story?

With the Founders League being cancelled for the 2020-2021 year the athletic community had to adjust The school lost some students to online status so they could compete off-campus and not have to worry about quarantining rules Other students began discussions about repeating a year for sports as well as for academic and developmental concerns

As the Winter Season moved on however teams were able to compete as things changed from November winter activities to late winter sports competitions on and off-campus Every week students did their pool Covid tests and so did Salisbury When both teams came back negative, the games were on and each player allowed to invite one parent

The One and Only

After much communication about fullteam Covid tests for Avon and visiting players, many games were scheduled and then canceled due to issues with the testing itself Despite Founders League being canceled, boys were excited to get on the ice, or on the courts to compete any way possible

Visitors were limited and fans absent completely The game on February 6th against Salisbury was more of a special event than the usual competitive rivalry

POLITICAL BACKDROP

Early winter of 2020, an overwhelming amount of political and social developments occurred with a neck-breaking speed On November 3rd and the months prior, more Americans -- including numerous members of the senior class -- cast a ballot for either Joseph R. Biden or Donald J Trump This election saw the most votes cast ever, with Biden garnering over 80 million of them to secure the office of President of the United States

The news was in nearconstant turmoil, with Donald Trump alleging voter fraud During that same period, massive strides were made in the fight to find a vaccine for the Covid-19 virus

On election night, many students gathered around laptops and televisions, watching in bated breath, hoping for their chosen candidate or candidates to pull through and win their election or re-election to office. In Eagle’s junior hall, the attention was heavily centered on swing states such as Georgia, Florida,

some cases As one junior said, “It was like watching a car wreck; I couldn’t look away and focus on other things even if I wanted to It was that captivating ”

Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Arizona, to name a few

As early votes and mail-in ballots rolled in, some celebrated as results look favorable or gritted their teeth as margins increased, making a path to victory more uncertain, nay impossible in

election trundled on, some focused more on Senate and House races, knowing the fate of legislation balanced upon these results As a student said, summing up Friday night’s Senate and House elections, “These races were arguably more important and much closer

Picking up on the theme of quick changes and close calls, the race was correctly predicted to be exceedingly close News remained in flux for the next two weeks as mail-in ballots continued to be tailed and then recounted The country relied on extended wait times to find winners of

states, and that wa consistent through 2020 presidential ace

With states like Michigan, Arizona, Pennsylvania, and Georgia going through manual recounts and sifting through the enormous amounts of ballots, the election’s fate remained upin-the-air

BETTING ON THE RACE

This uncertainty lead to a fun little game the Political Action Club created Their premise was simple, guess the correct date when the

night and the Presidential race being called allowed doubt to creep in about the fairness and security of the election, with some prominent figures alleging voter fraud and irregularities

While states went through recounts, lawsuits were filed contesting the election results During this time of doubt and uncertainty, many across the country believed and inseminated the false narratives about the election

Capitol, stormed Nancy Pelosi’s office, stole, vandalized, and attempted to find and kill individual members of Congress and even the former vicepresident, Mike Pence. American flags were torn down and replaced with ‘Make America Great Again’ flags, and even a

In the wake of the attack, Congress, led by the slim Democratic majority in the House, opened an impeachment investigation and quickly impeached Donald Trump for the second time in his term, making history as the first President to be impeached twice

race would be called Francis Hagood ‘23 guessed the correct date and won the prize pot of five dollars The election was called on November 7th; he guessed the 6th

The reason the election went on for so long was due to state laws and the recordbreaking amount of mail-in

VIOLENT RESPONSES

On January 6th 2021, a crowd heard President Trump and others speak about the election and urged the crowd to do something about Congress certifying the election result In the immediate aftermath of the speech, the mob marched its way to the Capitol building

Confederate flag entered the halls of Congress. As many said, including George W Bush, this was a dark day in American history Many here felt the same way, as one student said, “Watching what unfolded at the Capitol was one of the most disturbing and disheartening events we ’ ve seen as a country in

On the same day as the attack on the Capitol, January 6th, it was declared Jon Ossoff and the Reverend Raphael Warnock won the two Georgia Senate elections, creating a tie in the Senate 50-50 between Democrats and Republicans By law, a tie is broken by the Vice President, Kamala Harris, giving the Democrats a razor-thin lead With the impending trial of Donald Trump in front of the Senate, these two Senators were assumed to make a massive difference

UPDATES ON A VIRUS

In November, good news was on the horizon in the efforts to finally beat the Covid-19 pandemic This news could not have come at a better time, with rates across the country rising exponentially, surpassing the two previous peaks in the summer and spring

In Connecticut, the positivity rate posed a serious challenge to repopulation for the school second semester In September, the state-wide positivity rate hovered at 1%, making repopulation and quarantine protocols easier

Only four months later in December, the positivity rate had sky-rocketed to 10% state-wide On December 18th and December 11th, Moderna and Pfizer both announced their vaccine was viable and reliable These companies harnessed new technology and focused on

RNA to create their vaccine

The vaccine went public in January, and numerous countries and states began to inoculate their citizens

Countries like Israel and highrisk states like Florida rolled out vaccines, and their inoculation rates rose rapidly, allowing for a pathway to normalcy

As hope for healing seemed near, news of mutations in Covid-19 sprung up in the United Kingdom, Japan, and South Africa quickly These strands were more transmittable, and fear surrounding their potential implications played on the minds of many

VACCINE NEWS FOR STUDENTS

When asked about the vaccine and its potential, one student said, “I think the vaccine is a great start and hopefully will expedite our ability to return to where we

impressive I think we ll see more vaccines come out more frequently, and adjustments will be made to counteract the new strands Overall, I think we ’ re in good hands, and things will go back to normal soon, hopefully

The news about vaccine efficacy, roll-out, phases and response to the mutations was overwhelming in such a

were the most impacted and the first recipients of the vaccine

The issue came when states had wildly different responses to the logistics of distributing a vaccine to their citizens This meant some were left behind, still awaiting a vaccine to a lifethreatening virus. As one student said, “I feel a lot of trepidation and how the

short time At such a high level, the trials and tribulations, whether government or medical, left many suffering

The Covid-19 virus posed unprecedented and unique challenges to the world and this community Given the uniqueness of the virus, challenges emerged over the cure. States had to create, from scratch, a

vaccine is going to be distributed Obviously, I love my grandparents, and their safety is something of vast importance to me ” Despite this landscape of uncertainty and unpredictability, students have weathered the storms of political doubt and violence and dreamed of the rising sun of a vaccine

Q&A - the "Bubble"

Snip-bit of conversations with Provost Rob Dowling- February 12, 2021

How has the reintroduction process this time around differed from the fall?

R D- Most importantly the statistics in the surrounding areas were more troubling When you guys came back in the fall the prevalence was very very low, and when you came back after the holidays, the prevalence was significantly higher I think the concern was, ‘how do we manage inperson learning, within the tradition of Avon, with predictable increases in Covid cases ’

So you weren’t surprised by how high that number [Covid-19 cases] got in Connecticut in terms of the positivity rate?

R D -- I wasn t You know Connecticut, like many other states, has many of the same issues While generally, I think Connecticut has done better than some other states, I think it would be naive to think Connecticut would be an exception So when we were repopulating in late-August or in earlySeptember, the positivity rate was around 1% and when we returned to school in January, it was between 6 and 8%. So to think we would be immune from those statistics would be foolish So we did the best we could in terms of aggressive protocols, we asked you to test before returning, we quarantined when we got here, we tested

several times -- once a week for four weeks -- we identified cases, we had protocols that informed us in how we would respond to all those situations I think, fortunately, all those planning sessions that we had worked out pretty well, in the sense that we didn’t have wide spread cases on campus, we were able to address the small number of cases without interrupting in-person learning

Yeah, that leads right into my next question; how do you think students, as a whole, have handled this second time around? I know from what I’ve seen, and what I’ve heard, it’s a lot more strict protocol-wise this time around

R D- I think our responsibility to educate students is to inform them of real world problems too, and how real world problems are going to be addressed on campus So I think all the things we have had to do as an institution have only been successful if there has been student compliance Now when students are here, I think it’s tough I think of the senior class who has seen a wide range of Avon: they’ve experienced -- if they’ve been here for more than a year -- what Avon should be, experienced it online, and now are experiencing it with an enormous amount of restrictions in their movements, off campus activities, what they can do on campus. That will certainly create an emotional reaction from the boys

Thanks Mr D- we'll have to do this again in two months and see what the updates are.

INSPIRATION THROUGH SEPARATION- Seven photography students are selected for ASAP Exhibit about "Quarantine" in Woodbury CT Lorenzo Landini and Sam Russo shown below make work based on the theme of physical separation and brotherhood Sam won the top prize that was announced at the awards ceremony held virtually in December The "bubble" that Avon sought to create over the year was in flux but always included distancing rules and emotional barricades as well

"Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the life you have imagined."

Dear Avon Old Farms Community,

This year has been a continuous test of our collective fortitude, both mental and physical Last spring we closed our doors and sheltered in our homes and attended classes through computer screens This year was only the second time in our 94 years we closed our campus the only other time being at the outbreak of World War II In these uncertain and unorthodox times, the world so often feels upside down Amid a deadly pandemic, the largest Civil Rights movement in our generation, and an election filled with controversy -- we returned this Fall to our hilltop home With that backdrop, we, as a school, had to operate differently than before So too did the Yearbook

Like the new standards of scholastic enterprises employed this year, such as masks, social distancing, class-specific events, and the abandonment of traditional sit-down dinners so too did the Yearbook reinvent itself Knowing of the difficult year ahead we stretched ourselves opting for a new method as to how we wrote the yearbook Our articles became longer and more journalistic in nature; we created a new book which recalled all the valuable and venerated traditions but fresh in appearance, theme, and style

This year has been about coming back to Avon and making the best of terribly unfortunate circumstances This year has stretched our impressions of our school So much of what makes Avon the place we know and love is the culture Ours is one steeped in tradition, brotherhood sportsmanship and scholarship Each of these aspects has been fundamentally altered due to the Covid-19 pandemic Attending sporting events in person was off the table until late winter socializing in the dorms was all but forbidden and classes themselves were split between in-person and virtual students But despite these cataclysmic changes, we made our come back Dragged in by our most heartfelt love and admiration for Avon and what it represents to all the students, faculty, staff, alumni, and our families, we returned

This year ’ s theme is about embracing that comeback Originating from hundreds of cultures and dozens of countries across the globe, we are all drawn in and connected to each other by this school on a hilltop It provided a normalcy which allowed us to tune out the outside and commit to our passions whether they be academic athletic or artistic in nature To attend a place like Avon is a gift for us all When circumstances tore us apart we as a collective knew we had to come back -- and we did aspiring and persevering all the while

app; although all community members are encouraged to follow health and safety guidelines at the time of capture, some images may contain individuals without masks or less than recommended social distancing The yearbook staff is responsible for layout/design copy writing caption writing as well as overall editing of the publication Every effort is made to ensure the Winged Beaver is holistic, objective, and accurate Although the publication is thoroughly proofread and edited, we sincerely apologize for any omissions misspellings mis-attributes or other errors that occurred during the editorial process

the pandemic Unlike previous years when the team published a large newsletter by the end of each quarter, the team settled with the idea of publishing small newspapers every other month “I think that the Avon Record has been moving in a positive direction We're starting to adapt to the pace of life at Avon News starts, spreads, and dies very quickly at Avon Old Farms, and I think that our current approach has improved morale and helped us become ingrained in life at Avon Old Farms,' said August Berklas '21

The Avon Record newspaper team met on February 5th to discuss a plan that will help them efficiently publish newsletters without being hindered by the setbacks of

The Investment club meets every Wednesday afternoon by zoom The club head’s primary focus during the meeting is to teach the participants how the stock market functions They encourage the participants to be active in the stock market game by teaching them new knowledge about the stock market every other week “We have been talking a lot about how the COVID19 pandemic has affected and is continuing to affect the market, and we have also talked about stocks that are recovering well as things return to normal,” said Ayden Gauthier '21, the head of the Investment Club

The Political Action club was one of the few clubs that has not been hindered by the

of the pandemic. oing the same kind orums we have ng all year, ” says William Goldman, the head of the Political Action Club “We have done a really good job, I feel, in being open and allowing access for anyone who wants to swing by, but simultaneously, adhering to Covid guidelines”. William Goldman continued to state; I think it's a good spot to talk about your political opinions without judgment There's no teacher to tailor your thoughts to, so the commentary is raw -- unless someone is being sarcastic or pointfully bombastic,” says Goldman

Every Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, the Club Forge was open for anyone who is interested in learning more about engineering “This year, COVID caused less people to attend the Forge meeting,” said Ms Larson, chief advisor of Club Forge Working with a small group of students, Mrs Larson and Spencer Li '22, the head of Club Forge,

conducted small-sized engineering activities such as building the pumpkin catapult for the Avon Halloween party, a drivable mini-car, and cardboard planes that can be controlled autonomously. “We wanted the students to learn how to build their own projects without being too dependent on their teachers,” says Mrs Larson

During the club period, many students were seen building each individual part of the project without the help of their mentors Even with a limited number of students, the club has enlarged the Avon community’s interest in engineering It has provided a workplace for

aspiring engineers who are willing to learn more about how to build a project, and an area where veterans can start their independent projects

Throughout Spring, the Environmental Club planned celebrations for Earth Month: The Water Bottle Reduction Project, Reusable Mask Handouts, and Treeplenish tree planting activity The Water Bottle project was started in the first week of April, which was also the first week of Earth month The project aimed to encourage the students to reduce plastic waste created by consuming plastic water bottles by

using reusable bottles The project encouraged school admissions to consider installing water filters for the Quad dormitories to further reduce plastic usage in school The Reusable Mask project first started as a charity back in October, when the club raised money to purchase the reusable masks by selling burgers and nuggets to the school community.

During the April 9th and 16th lunch period, the Environmental Club handed out around 100 reusable masks to the students and faculties Back in November, the Treeplenish team, a nonprofit organization ran by undergraduates from Harvard University and University of Michigan, reached out to the Environmental Club in Avon It proposed to plant 100 trees to compensate for the paper usage of the school During March, the Environmental Club conducted a dress-down day to secure funds that will be used to purchase the trees

On April 26th 2021, the club members met in the Oakgrove to plant three
