Every year at this time, the buzz is about “spring cleaning.” I read about it, I watch videos on the most effective way to do it—and then I forget all about it. That’s why there are so many random, forgotten items in our home, from the kitchen (three coffee grinders, two of which are still in the unopened boxes; more cocktail glasses than one needs to service a bar on South Beach; and enough place settings to feed the Kardashians and their boyfriends past and present) to the garage (too much lives here to list, but a sampling includes three dog crate boxes all more than six years old, 12 fishing rods that haven’t been used in more than 10 years and numerous car detailing kits and devices that remain untouched because my husband has a service come to the house to do it—and yet, continues stockpiling these items). I finally had enough and made the decision to just purge. The process has begun and will obviously be ongoing through the next month or so, but I anticipate a very pleasant surge of relief as a result—a lightness, if you will, that comes with unloading dead weight. But it’s not just our “stuff” that needs assessing every so often; our financial house frequently needs a good “cleaning” as well. That’s why in this issue we look at money—not just how to spend it, which you probably
don’t need any help with, but how to figure out to optimize your savings and prepare for the future. In case you’re interested, turn to “Spring Cleaning” on page 110 and take a look at what our experts told us about that very topic. Also in this issue, as we do every year, we meet some very cool Miami dads who have done some living in their time, and who have learned from their experiences to become the best fathers they can be (“Top Pops” on page 100). And for whichever special dad you honor this Father’s Day—whether it’s your own, a stepdad, an uncle, your husband or son—we’ve got a unique and fitting gift idea in our annual Father’s Day Gift Guide (“Who’s Your Daddy?” on page 116). Yes, Father’s Day is not until June, but it’s never too early to start thinking about finding the ideal gift. Which leads me to think about potential gifts for my own husband…perhaps a garage organizer? Enjoy the issue.

She contributes regularly to Aventura Magazine, Miami.com, The Miami Herald, Allure and The Huffington Post by day and is a fierce high-brow fashion blogger on thewordygirl.com by night. When not sweating her next assignment over a hot keyboard, Maria can be found chasing her two children, frolicking on a beach, at Target, Facebooking, Twittering, Pinning, Instagramming, viewing horrid reality television programming or shopping. More of the last one, really.
A former model and dentist, fashion stylist Marcela Alma is one of Miami’s fastest-rising stars. By age 12, hundreds of fashion sketches lined the walls of her bedroom, and many of those early designs materialized as pieces she sewed with fabric that her father would bring home from his Colombian textile empire, Coltejer. By age 14, she was styling and shopping for classmates. Currently, Marcela spends her days styling photo shoots, making TV appearances on Cosmopolitan TV and CNN en Español to dispense style tips, covering red carpets and curating wardrobes for television shows, personal shopping and harnessing the power of social media to share with other industry artists.
Steve Siler Steve Siler’s first word was not “mama” or “dada,” but “car.” Since then, all things automotive have remained his obsession. He started his first car column at his college newspaper in his hometown of Los Angeles, California, in 1995, and thus began his mission to share his enthusiasm for the world’s most beautiful, exciting and innovative automobiles. Today, his pithy and informative automobile reviews are published in Car and Driver Magazine, Yahoo Autos, Autoblog, AOL Autos, Details Magazine, and New York Daily News.

The 90-year-old City National Bank Building has been restored to The Langford Hotel, which will include two new concepts by the Pubbelly Boys, along with a two-story penthouse and 126 guest rooms.
A historic building downtown is revived as The Langford Hotel. The new luxury boutique property The Langford Hotel is slated to open its doors in the heart of Downtown Miami this summer. The 126-room boutique hotel will be a meticulous restoration of one of Downtown Miami’s first architectural masterpieces, the 90-year-old City National Bank Building—and part of the larger, overall transformation of the area that’s already in progress. The plan: for The Langford to be one of Miami’s hottest destinations, not just for out-of-towners but also for locals, with modern amenities like a two-story penthouse suite and a high-energy restaurant, PB Station, and rooftop lounge, called Pawn Broker, created by those guys with the Midas touch, The Pubbelly Group. The reinterpretation of the 12-store high-rise, which has been on the US National Register of Historic Places since 1989, is meant to create a downtown hideaway like no other in the lineup that is rapidly expanding in that part of town, one with “world-class features that will appeal to the senses.” And after all, isn’t that what Miami is all about? For more information and updates, visit langfordhotelmiami.com.
A TAsTy TidbiT IceBox Café is announced as one of the first retailers of the upcoming Aventura Park Square. the buzz about Aventura Park Square has been on for a while, and now we know one of the retailers we can look forward to frequenting there is icebox Café. this will be the popular restaurant’s fifth location in the US and first street-side restaurant outside of Miami Beach since 1998. Fans of its signature Coconut Buttercream cake and Chocolate Delight can count down the days—or maybe we should say months—until the 4,000-squarefoot space opens, which is expected in early 2017 and will include a bakery and deli area, a spacious fullservice bar offering specialty cocktails, micro brews and wines, and an organic juice bar. The menu will offer the brand’s signature American-fusion cuisine, with fresh, organic ingredients and unparalleled service. For more information, visit iceboxcafe.com. 62

Here Comes Another One
A taste of Paris comes to Miami in the form of the new Givenchy store. Adding to the long (and getting longer) list of top-tier fashion brands opening stores in the Design District, Givenchy has just opened its doors. The architecture of this location bespeaks an evolution of the Paris flagship store’s concept at 28 rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré, representing the Couture House’s DNA—a blend of street style and aristocratic elegance expressed through a mix of fine and raw materials. The concept pays homage to the boxes in which Hubert de Givenchy used to deliver his Haute Couture dresses. The Spring/Summer 2015 ready-to-wear collections are presented in half-closed black lacquer boxes and on suspended mannequins, the only glimpse of the collections that can be seen from outside. The accessories are displayed on the upper floors, in basaltina niches. And the massive black façade is flanked by the gold logo and the house’s iconic golden cutout. For Spring/Summer 2015, Riccardo Tisci is offering a modern collection done completely in black and white that revisits his rock couture style with a mix of materials like lace and flaps, metal and semi-precious stones, and printed silk, among others, and presents all the “New Obsedia,” “HDG” (House of Givenchy) and “Pandora Box” bags in their new colors. The store is located at 100 Biscayne Blvd., Ste. 2400, Miami; visit store.givenchy.com.

“I help my clients focus on the end game. I ask them where they want to end up and then help them start at the beginning to achieve that goal, whether that means being aware of their credit and repairing it when necessary or having a viable source of income.”
THE CLOSER renee smith prides herself on helping her clients from beginning to end And closing even the most chAllenging reAl estAte deAls. Renee Smith launched her firm, Smith Title Services, Inc., in 2007. “It was a long road to get here,” she admits, “and I know I’m a non-traditional lawyer, but I’m forging my own path and making a difference in people’s lives. I love having the flexibility of owning my own business, speaking at conventions, writing books and blogging for Forbes and Huffington Post, among others. I’m able to reach so many people this way and give them the tools they need to make the best financial and real estate decisions for their life at that time.” Smith’s title company allows her to help clients from start to finish. While she specializes in distressed homes, she’s also working with various developers in Hallandale and throughout South Florida. Thanks to her background, Smith understands the literal nuts and bolts of construction and community development, but also brings her business and legal perspective along for the ride. “Real estate touches all of our lives, from the multi-million dollar developers to those families looking for an affordable lease, and I’m fortunate to be able to assist clients at every level of that equation.” And, according to Smith, now that the South Florida real estate scene has stabilized, there’s a better chance that locals can buy into the market. “The dollar is getting stronger, limiting the purchasing power of Europeans since their money won’t get them as much as it once did; the price of oil is dropping, which impacts the South American buyers that were once so prominent, and the FHA is back to 3 percent. These are all great developments for locals, who are finally getting a chance to purchase a home that will actually appreciate.” Smith Title Services, Inc., 305.705.3428; smithtitleservices.com. 66
RENEE SMITH The daughter of a retired developer, Renee Smith came of age in the real estate business, and though she is an attorney by trade—with a JD under her belt, along with clerkships with two different Federal Magistrates—it’s the law that has allowed her to pursue her passion. “Becoming an attorney was a way for me to give service and use the real estate and development background I grew up with in an organic way,” she explains. “At my core, I’m a problem solver in the service industry. That’s how my mind works, and I’m always looking for the best solution for my clients. That’s my forte—I always close the impossible deal; fix the impossible title issue. I know I can find a solution to every problem. I never let a deal die.”

A TechnicAl FeAT Working With ulysse nArdin, one of the oldest WAtch compAnies in the World, nelson lucero hAs helped guide the brAnd’s north AmericAn development. By Jennifer leslie Kramer
The Marine Diver Titanium is selfwinding and encased in 18K rose gold.
Nelson Lucero has spent his career in the watch world—“a small industry, where everyone knows everyone,” he says—and has been part of Ulysse Nardin, the close-knit but powerful worldwide watch brand, since 2001. “When they decided to open a North American headquarters in Boca Raton in 2001, I had been commuting weekly back and forth to New York City, so I was definitely ready for something different. The company has flourished here from the time the decision was made to open a subsidiary and it’s been an incredibly fast development, which can be attributed to the focus and commitment of the owner, our marketing and communication plan, and the revolutionary product we sell.” And the public agrees. To wit: the brand is adding a third boutique to its South Florida collection, which will open in the Miami Design District this summer. Having previously worked at a mass-produced luxury brand, Lucero appreciates the high technology, craftsmanship and innovation that go into each and every timepiece. “When you think about the ingenuity within each watch—the conceptualization and human passion it takes to create these timepieces from simple ratchets, wheels and springs—it’s incredible,” he says. “We are a specialty product and fill a specific niche. Sometimes, our maximum capacity may be under 20,000 watches worldwide, with only 3,000 in our North American division. With that, you begin to understand why there is such a premium for these timepieces.” Adding to the brand’s cache, Lucero shares that by the end of 2017 the company hopes to be 100 percent independent. “Most other watch companies rely on products and parts from other suppliers, but soon we’ll be completely self-sufficient. Being able to control every step of production with in-house manufacturing will change the game.” In the Aventura Mall, 19501 Biscayne Blvd., Ste. 2065, Aventura, 305.830.1786; ulysse-nardin.com. the Skeleton tourbillon Manufacture was a limited-edition release of only 28 pieces.
“Lately women have been asking more and more about what’s inside the watch. They are interested in more than the jewels and diamonds on its face, but want to know what makes it work. It speaks to the growth and development of not only the market, but also an appreciation for the craftsmanship.”
NELSON LUCERO In high school, Nelson Lucero was constantly trading watches with his friends so he could have a new one to wear each week. Today, as executive vice president for the North American subsidiary of Ulysse Nardin, it’s safe to say his watch box is probably pretty full. “I’ve always been mechanically inclined, so I decided to pursue a degree in mechanical engineering,” he explains. “From there, I fell into the world of mechanical watches and it’s been a great fit; I’ve been able to find success and enjoy the process along the way.”

THE BRIGHTER THE BETTER Make your spring wardrobe pop with a bright bag. Spring has officially sprung, and whether or not it’s as evident here in South Florida as it is in the rest of country, it’s still fun to follow the seasonal trends. According to Lisa Jaffe, owner of the North Miami boutique Statements, that means color. But what to do if you prefer basic black? “Invest in a bag that will make your outfit pop,” says Jaffe. “These bright bags will make your outfit come alive. The runways were flooded with floral prints in both clothing and accessories. You can either follow that trend head on or pick a bright green that will complement the colors you’re already wearing. Plus, with no hardware, you don’t have to worry that gold or silver straps or buckles will clash with the accessories you’ve already got on.” Swing by Statements at 2118 NE 123rd St., North Miami or call 305.893.7559. 72

Lorena Shiff will dig through your closet to unearth treasures and earn you money.
The Consignment Queen
Lorena Shiff created a booming buSineSS by foLLowing her faShion obSeSSion.
A lawyer by trade, Lorena Shiff’s life was turned upside down one day while cleaning out her closet. “I found 12 Versace cashmere sweaters in all these crazy colors and nobody wanted them!” she recollects. “I couldn’t give them away for free, but I put them on eBay and made a ton of money.” From there, friends and family began relying on Lorena to sell their secondhand designer duds to help them make a profit. It didn’t take long for her to figure out that she had found her calling, and soon after, left the legal world to begin Lorena’s Worth. “It made perfect sense,” she says. “I spent so much time shopping and following every move in the designer clothing world—that’s always been my passion.” Today, Shiff has more than 10 employees and regularly gets calls from customers spanning the globe. And no job is too big or too small. “You can consign just one thing with a simple phone call. We’ll send you an itemized receipt with a client code, which will allow you to watch your item sell live online,” she explains. “For larger jobs, which include at least 10 items, I’ll bring my team to your house for our white glove service.” And yes, Shiff and her team actually break out the white gloves—a necessity when inspecting vintage Hermès bags. “Clients looking for a total overhaul give us free reign, and we act as style consultants, helping them reinvent their wardrobe, figure out their style and get organized. Others have more specific goals and pieces in mind when we arrive, but it’s great fun either way. One of my favorite aspects is when I get to work with older women and help them identify and authenticate their vintage designer bags. It often requires some digging, but I love every minute of it.” For more information, visit lorenasworth.com.

Turnberry Isle MIaMI welcoMes honey bees To The properTy.
Last summer, executive chef John Sexton decided it was time for something new, and upon the suggestion of a national member of Turnberry Isle who also happens to be a beekeeper, he began cultivating his own honey from private beehives on the property. At press time, there were two active hives with the intent to add another two. Why bees? According to Sexton, “They’re in need of growth and support globally, so anything we can do to help the process is beneficial to the planet.” Turnberry Gold Honey is used in everything from cocktails and baked goods to sauces and marinades, as well as select menu items throughout the property’s restaurants, in-room dining and banquet dining. The über-local liquid gold is “a raw and natural product that hasn’t been blended, treated or processed in any way,” adds Sexton, which offers more nutritional value than its store-bought counterpart. While the hives shouldn’t be disturbed more than necessary, making it difficult for an up close and personal visit, we recommend getting your hands on that honey, stat.
Chef John Sexton gets up close and personal with the honey bees at turnberry isle; the Brown Sugar Honey Cake includes honey sourced from the property’s bees; the look and taste of turnberry gold Honey is incomparable to the commercially processed variety.

She’d always had a love for whisky, and appreciated the variety and nuances in each bottle, not to mention the hard work and dedication of the whisky makers barreling product for future generations that they may never have the chance to taste themselves. “Soon I began experimenting for my friends and family, blending different single malt whiskies in my kitchen,” she recollects. “I was like a chef, and time after time, there was one blend in particular that everyone really loved.” And just like that, a star was born. A blend of Speyside, Highlands and Islay malts, SIA appeals to a contemporary palate. With a high malt content and notes of vanilla, caramel and citrus, this is definitely not your grandfather’s scotch. “But don’t call it a ‘women’s scotch,’” says Luna-Ostaseski. “I’m fighting tooth and nail against that stereotype. It’s a whisky for people who love whisky.” And by the number of local lounges already carrying the brand—Ball and Chain and the Regent Cocktail Club among them—that’s quite a few people. Luxury on a
LargeScale thAt’s whAt you’ll find in the 2015 lincoln nAvigAtor. By Steve Siler Luxury automobiles are more than just cushy seats with wheels. They can also be defined by their abilities, power, space and sense of occasion. And if any kind of luxury automobile fits all these bills at once, it is the luxury SUV. As one of the original lux-u-vees, the Lincoln Navigator is as much a household name as the Cadillac Escalade and the Land Rover Range Rover. And there’s no mystery about what it stands for: pure luxury in large-print form. The experience starts as you approach it. The Navigator’s nose was freshened for 2015, blessing it with a new twin-port grille treatment with horizontal and new headlamps with LED running lamps that give it a unique “light signature” recognizable from a block away. In back, a new tailgate boasts a single band of LEDs that help accentuate its width. It’s a mild but effective update that should keep the vehicle looking great for years. 82
The central electronic instrument cluster has been refreshed from last year with chrome-ringed knobs, making the new technology features easy to access and use.
Aventurist drive time
In top-shelf “Reserve” trim, as our tester arrived, the Navigator certainly brings the spoils. Cupping one’s bum is several hides’ worth of buttery leather, the same sublime material that covers most top-stitched dash and door panels, interrupted only by a few artfully placed panels of polished wood. As part of the refresh, a new, fully electronic instrument cluster and chrome-ringed knobs replace last year’s rather dated interface and make the Navigator’s many new technology features easy to access and use. And of course, the Navigator offers plenty of space, with seating for up to eight adults. For a more luxurious arrangement, a seven-passenger arrangement brings second-row captain’s chairs and an easy pass-through to the third-row seats, which are nearly as comfortable as the rest, thanks to its low floor and vast legroom. Indeed, even in luxury SUVs, the back row is a space often treated as an afterthought, but the Navigator’s may be the best in the business. But the best place in the house may be the driver’s seat. It is there that one sits in full command of the Lincoln’s prodigiously powerful turbocharged V-6. Now, if you’re thinking that a V-6 sounds like it has two cylinders too few to power a truck this large, we’ll point out that the twin turbos help it outmuscle many a V-8, and after spending the week with it, we can attest that not only is the 2015 model the quickest Navigator in history, it is also the quietest and, for those of you with boats and horses, can also tow the most: up to 9,000 pounds. All that and better fuel economy, too. It’s a win-win-win situation. With space, style and a satisfying driving experience, the Navigator offers high level of luxury, no matter how you define it. Oh yeah, and it has cushy seats, too.

Mark Wahlberg may be a tough guy on screen, but in real life, he’s a selfdescribed “emotional wreck.” And even though he’s been rapping, performing onstage and acting in movies for more than 20 years, it wasn’t a turn as porn star Dirk Diggler in Boogie Nights or years as the executive producer of the HBO series Entourage (which was loosely based on his experiences in Hollywood) that did it to him. Or the pressure of starring as a foul-mouthed Massachusetts State Police detective in Martin Scorsese’s thriller The Departed, which earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor, a Golden Globe nomination for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture, and an NSFC Best Supporting Actor award.

wIth the tools that wIll make them good people. It’s actually becoming a father that turned the former Marky Mark from the Funky Bunch-boy-band-cumunderwear-model-cum-big-screen-tough-guy into a teary mess. Wahlberg, who has been married to Rhea Durham since 2009 and has been in a relationship with her since 2001, has four children. Their entrance into his life has had a profound effect in every aspect of it. As he told Redbook of his earlier years, “I wasn’t exactly the man I am today. Growing up, I think I was arrested 20-odd times by the Boston police. The good news is that I’ve been able to use those experiences in a lot of my roles, and that has been a blessing.” And as Wahlberg told People magazine, life is now pretty much a continuous state of organized chaos. Ella, 10, Michael, 8, Brendan, 5, and Grace, 4, keep Mom and Dad on their toes. “It’s not easy,” Wahlberg told the weekly. “But it’s how we always pictured things.” After his own troubled upbringing in South Boston, the devout Catholic is determined to raise down-to-earth children as a Hollywood power player. In a 2011 interview with USA Weekend, Wahlberg stated that he had taken his children to visit his old Dorchester neighborhood: “I want them to know that not everyone is as fortunate and how important it is to work hard and give back.” Of the many lessons learned, keeping the kids humble is top priority. “I want to give them all the things I never had but make sure they understand it’s not normal and that it takes hard work to get what you want,” says the actor. “You have to provide them with the tools that will make them good people.” Having an even split with two boys and two girls in the household, Wahlberg is faced with challenges on both sides. “I’m dreading the teenage years with my daughters; it’s not going to be easy for them to go on a date,” he says with a laugh. “I don’t let my girls go out of the house.” When asked if he also wants his daughters to be tough, Wahlberg replied, “They are! They are very strong, smart and independent. Having two daughters changed my perspective on a lot of things, and I definitely have a newfound respect for women. And I think I finally became a good and real man when I had a daughter. Women don’t get the credit they deserve. I was at my daughter’s ballet class and I was on the phone making a business call and watching her on the monitor, and I realized how hard it is to work and be there for your kids. As far as I’m concerned, there’s no job more important on the planet than being a mom.” As for his sons, he says, “My boys are obsessed with everything sports. The first thing out of their mouths in the morning when their eyes are barely open is, ‘Dad, did the Clippers win?’”
They also ride dirt bikes and wrestle with their dad. In general, “I pray for patience,” he says. “But the kids test me.” Even before he became a father, Wahlberg established the Mark Wahlberg Youth Foundation for the purpose of raising and distributing funds to youth service and enrichment programs. He’s a prime example of someone who’s made plenty of mistakes and learned from them, and is putting his experience to good use.
CloCkwise from above: Ted 2 will hit theaters June 26; it was a
family affair when Wahlberg received his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2010; He’s also involved with his family’s restaurant, Wahlburgers, which has a reality show of the same name on A&e; Wahlberg was joined on the red carpet by his wife and kids for the premiere of the The Lego Movie.

Meet five South Florida dads that are at the top of their game—as both businessmen and fathers— and setting examples for the next generation. By Jennifer Leslie Kramer

“Now that the kids are older, we’ve been enjoying watching them come into their own—as individuals with their own interests and people you can hang out with and have a conversation. Realizing that has brought on a whole new era in parenting.”
HONORING THEIR DIFFERENCES “All the kids are really creative, and as parents, we’re proud that we’ve nurtured that spark. And yet, we’ve also recognized their differences. We don’t put them in the same box and expect the same things from each of them. I owe it mostly to my wife, who has really identified the differences in each of them and their personalities, and pinpointed what they each need to succeed.”

“We’ve learned that if we push too hard, they just tune it out. We’ve found the most success in a more subtle approach, by laying down little hints here and there. There are opportunities to hammer something home, but it’s about picking your battles and finding the right time.”
“I missed enough of my kids growing up when I was starting my career. It became time for me to make the decision that family is most important. It took some recalibrating. But I’ve gotten much better about it, and now we have dinner as a family three or four times a week—that’s become a priority.”

“When people have a new baby, they say your heart lives outside your body and your whole perspective on life changes. But I think the main way she has changed our life is deeply functional. The gear and preparation and life safety items required to simply bring her to a park or restaurant is out of control—it’s like going to Burning Man.”
OLDER & WISER
LIVE YOUR LIFE
“We want her to be highly socialized. From the moment we got home from the hospital, we started having groups of two to three friends over every day. People would show up with bottles of Cristal. But even around the birth of a baby, we were enjoying our time, and now we make it a habit to take her wherever we go.”
“Becoming a dad any moment before I did would have completely ruined my social life in Miami. But really, I was already 45, and even in Miami, you have to grow up at some point. My dad died at 76, so I thought about how old I would be when I pass away. We did some reverse engineering and it really shed some light on the matter.”
“Nothing makes me sadder than seeing people get married or have kids too young and being robbed of the experience of traveling and experiencing different cultures around the world. We’ve discovered that there are a number of countries—Iceland, Sweden, Germany, Brazil, just to name a few—that offer free admission to their universities with an American passport. We want Gia to live in another culture, meet people from all over the world, learn a new language and have that worldview that is so lacking today.”
CARLOS BAEZ Photographer Palmetto Bay Dad to Carson, 9; Cameron, 7
“When my dad came to this country from Cuba, all he did was work. I always vowed that I would be different. I’ve noticed as the boys have gotten older they need more time. And at the end of the day, when my life is over, none of what I did in my career will matter. The only thing that will count is the love I have for my children.”
“Parents have to be diligent about the challenges of social media. Because they are so tuned into the golfing community, we’ve allowed the boys to have their own Instagram account, @thebaezboys, where they share their experiences and accomplishments at golf tournaments—win or lose, and that’s an important point for us. We approve everything they post, but we’re not helicopter parents; we want them to experience it all on their own.”
OLDER & WISER
“Getting married at 38 and having my first son at 40 was a totally different experience than having kids younger, or so I would imagine. I’m going through the transitions of life with them—turning 50 and still having young boys—and it enriches my life in every way possible. At this stage, things are black and white. I know what’s important.”
“When Carson chose golf, he really committed. He saw a golf tournament and at five years old he decided that’s what he wanted to do. He just keeps plugging away and putting the work in, and now both boys really enjoy it. He’s shown me true passion and desire with no compromise.”

VP and creative director, Shiraz Events; food blogger at tthespicedetective.com. Miami Dad to Rachel, 4 “I’ve been surprised to learn just how smart kids are. We always say that, but I really see it in Rachel. She is very intuitive and incredibly sensitive—she feels anything I am going through, which is incredible. But it’s important to remember that and be aware of your mood, because they are deeply affected by it.”
“I love spending time with Rachel—teaching her, exposing her to art, culture and diversity. As three parents—myself and her two moms—it’s all about showering her with love and respecting her for who she is. We want her to feel comfortable in her own skin. Our environment has always been very supportive and encouraging.”
OLDER & WISER
“For me, I knew my life wouldn’t be complete unless I became a father, and it was truly a journey to make it happen. Being a parent is one of the most sacred things to me and I take it as such a privilege, and becoming a dad later in life made all of this even clearer. With age comes experience and wisdom and you learn not to take a single thing for granted.”
“Rachel inspires me to become a better person. She encourages me to slow down and enjoy our time together. She’ll actualy tell me to eat slower. It’s laughable, but I learn to appreciate every bite, literally and figuratively. We need to learn how to appreciate each other and all the people in our life. Sometimes we lose sight of that, but it’s those people who make your life worth living.” 104

General contractor, developer, restaurateur and owner of Joe’s Old School Pizza Cooper City Dad to Ava Jane, 2 “The morning is our special time. She’s an early riser like me, so that’s our quality time together. We watch King Kong or Mighty Joe Young. We climb around on the floor together. And even when I have to leave for work, we’re in constant contact. When she was tiny, she would come to construction sites, and now she comes to the pizzeria. She has been treated like an adult since she was little. She is involved in everything we do.”
“Social media and the Internet can be the greatest learning tools in the world, but I worry about the unscrupulous people online—you never know who is on the other side of the computer. Plus, I want her to be outside and enjoy activities like soccer and gymnastics. As a parent, it’s important that I’m not contributing to that generation of children that don’t know how to communicate and interact with each other in person.”
OLDER & WISER
“I was waiting for the right time to become a dad. I would’ve been a crappy father when I was younger. When you’re young you don’t know about the world, but you think you do—and that’s even worse. I may be senile by the time she’s 18, but I know so much more now than I did then, which allows me to be a better provider and educator.”
“I don’t want to her to grow up with the stereotypes that my generation did. I want her to be unbiased and love everyone equally without judgment. She’s already very empathetic. When she plays soccer, she cheers for everyone, no matter what team they’re on.”

Cleaning We all remember
to address it in our
homes, but what about your financial house? Now’s as good a time as any to look at what you have, what you
want, and whether you’re on
the right track to get it.
ometimes the thought of sitting down and looking at our money—where it is, how much of it there is, and what it’s doing, if anything—is so daunting that it’s easier to just avoid the issue all together. And naturally, that course of non-action leads to, well, nowhere. no stress over the realization that we aren’t saving enough, that the credit card balances are too high, that we’re older than we had planned to be without sufficient retirement cushion. it also means there’s no chance to tap into potential new investments, accounts with higher interest rates and a more comfortable financial future. so bite the bullet. You got through tax time, so sit down and get through this, too. We asked merrill Lynch Wealth management financial advisors michael Brener and myron stayman for advice that might just nudge you into action once you discover that your inertia isn’t the cure for what financially ails you. And even if you’ve been on top of your situation, there’s no such thing as too much knowledge when it comes to your money.
“It’s important to stick to your plan, no matter how long the road may look initially.” What are important things to look at when you try to figure out where to cut expenses and how to save more without becoming overwhelmed? “The first thing we do is determine the client’s income needs and review the client’s investment portfolio. We use a proprietary tool that allows us to simulate hundreds of potential future outcomes and determine the probability of an existing portfolio to meet those needs. When it seems unlikely, then we start analyzing both the portfolio and the client’s expenses, differentiating between essential and discretionary expenses, and determine which one could use some adjustments so that the client can have his or her money last them their lifetime.” With savings account interest rates in the basement, what are some good new options for those looking to get a decent return on their money? “This comes down to acceptance of risk. For the very risk-averse, there are no options. All forms of short-term investments provide nearly 0 percent return on your money. Yet, there is some risk that can be undertaken that can offer some additional return. I mention ‘some’ risk because the investments have no guarantees, but their volatility is very minimal. Every investment carries some risk; the key is to understand the risk and decide if one is willing to accept it. There are areas in the fixed-income markets that could offer some degree of return as well as high-quality dividend paying stocks for those willing to accept some level of risk and that have a long-term investment time horizon.” How do online banks compare with brick-and-mortar institutions as far as savings, retirement funds, etc.? “Online banks offer great convenience, yet most brick-and-mortar banks today offer online services as well. When referring to investments, the online investment banks offer tools for those who are able to make their own investment choices and have the time to do so. The disadvantage of the do-it-yourself online is the lack of personal connection. When we provide advice, it is specific to the investor. Not everyone has the same risk tolerance. It is critical to understand the client’s tolerance for risk so as not to expose him or her to a degree of risk that will not allow him or her sleep well at night and eventually make the wrong decision at precisely wrong time. An online questionnaire will not determine the right tolerance. Only human interaction and conversation can do that.”
tell us anything we should know about, follow, read or check into that perhaps we wouldn’t otherwise because we get complacent. “The economy and investments are moving targets, and trends don’t last forever. It’s always important to keep a balance in one’s portfolio so that the risk that one is exposed to doesn’t increase over time, for lack of rebalancing. When something performs very well, you expect it to do so forever, and it can become a too large a part of one’s portfolio. If and when that trend reverses, then the overall impact is very large. Investors must avoid complacency by reviewing and rebalancing their portfolios to match their original goals and risk tolerance.”
IF YOU’RE HAVING TO REBUILD
Nearly everyone experiences financial peaks and valleys, even those who have been responsible and even diligent about building a nest egg for the future. If you’re coming off of a tough time and just starting to get back to where you’re ready to begin rebuilding your personal wealth—which may seem to be a daunting task when you’re starting out from a position of weakness, and no doubt will not happen as quickly as you probably would like it to—the key is to stay cool, map out a plan, and have patience as part of the means to reach your goal. To start, says John Lacy, Senior Vice President of Wealth Management at Merrill Lynch in Palm Beach, identify and quantify realistic goals. When it comes to investing, know that volatility in value will inevitably occur with even the highest quality of investments. He recommends reinvesting dividends. “That takes the emotional decision-making process away from the investor and forces him to purchase incremental amounts of an investment when prices are declining and the headlines regarding the economy seem dire,” Lacy explains. Another way to enhance investment income is by diversifying, not just across stocks but across asset classes. Forbes cited as an example a group of Japanese investors who tried to rebuild wealth by investing in stocks even as those stocks plunged from their all-time highs; the investors did suffer severe losses, but the losses were offset because they had also invested part of their portfolio in bonds. Finance guru and best-selling author Suze Orman, who divides her time between Fort Lauderdale, New York and San Francisco, counsels that it’s imperative to “be involved” with your money rather than just entrusting it to financial advisers. But with the interest rate offered on money markets at a national average of less than 1 percent, it’s difficult to know how to maximize the return on whatever money you’re able to sock away. “Whatever you do, make sure your money is in an account that is insured by the FDIC,” Orman says. She highly recommends a visit to the website ratebrain.com, which contains listings of interest rates on CDs, savings accounts, etc., with some as high as 4 percent. Finally, Lacy says it’s important to stick to your plan, no matter how long the road may look initially. “Start small, but remain committed,” he says. “Confidence is restored through small victories you realistically achieve."

The owner of this oceanfront Fort Lauderdale penthouse apartment spends most of his time in the living room indulging his passion for music. The sofa upholstery is Romo woven silk. The club chair fabric is JAB; the fabric on the accent chairs is by Nobilis. The coffee table with a tooled leather top has a bronze gallery by John Boone.
hen international designer geoffrey Bradfield and his associate roric tobin were commissioned to create the interiors of this 3,000-square-foot beachfront penthouse in fort lauderdale, they were instantly inspired by the sweeping water views. “the sun-drenched light and serene, calming colors are so like the indian ocean where i grew up,” says Bradfield, who was raised on south africa’s eastern Cape, on a family farm built atop a promontory overlooking that expanse of water. “i immediately envisioned a beautiful garçonnière by the sea.” Bradfield, who is based in new york and Palm Beach, had worked for this client before, designing the interiors of the french gentleman’s earlier home in Princeton, nJ; it was an estate with sweeping grounds and a decidedly french point of view. “My client is now semi-retired and divides his time between his main residence in Paris and this penthouse pied-à-terre in fort lauderdale,” says Bradfield. “he is passionate about sailing and has his yacht moored in the vicinity.” the client enters this bachelor apartment via an octagonal foyer with a marble floor and four faceted mirror corners showcasing art Moderne sconces in nickeled bronze with white bent panel glass. the north wall is

Reflected in the mirror facets is the first glimpse of the Atlantic Ocean, which draws the eye toward the open-plan living room. Bradfield knows that his client spends a great deal of time in that room enjoying the ocean views, entertaining friends and listening to music, his passion. “The additional rooms perform a secondary role, used mainly for guests,” says the designer of his client’s routine. The signature lush, hand-carved carpet, custom designed by Bradfield and executed by Stark Carpet, sets the tone for the entire living room. Together with the magnitude of the ocean in the background, the space, with its elegant furnishings and wall of custom cabinetry in dark walnut which houses the client’s collections and library, is a perfect respite. Adding emphasis to the rich tone of the wood, a pair of Empire armchairs in mahogany with gilt-wood moldings flank the sofa. Quilted throw pillows in burnt orange and cerulean silk add vibrant color to the otherwise neutral foil. “For me, modern design is the most intriguing, but I am not interested in the ‘icy cold’ variety,” explains Bradfield. “I attempt to achieve a more rooted, tactile brand of modernism, embracing comfort, form and function.” Since art is invariably the centerpiece of Bradfield’s interior design—he has a penchant for museums and began collecting at age 22—he was able to work that magic in the living room. He has orchestrated the apartment’s clean lines, creating the perfect showcase for a

pair of contemporary canvases and various vignettes of sculpture. The placement of the client’s bronzes from Colombian sculptor Fernando Botero, Hungarian avant-garde sculptor Joseph Csaky and French artist Andre Gilbert exemplify his ability to create visual drama. Here, with broad brushstrokes, the owner can see the designer’s humorous and eclectic allusion to the history of Modern Art, juxtaposing antiquities and works that span two centuries. The owner approaches his sumptuous bedroom through a sophisticated ribbon of framed mirror. Like the living room, the walls are upholstered in raw silk, enveloping him in an acoustic serenity. A study in contrasts, the room endorses the quest for comfort, informality and lightheartedness. “It is my goal to integrate a sense of visual wit,” says Bradfield. Introducing the grandeur of the ocean is the giant yellow Sunflower Woman by Edwina Sandys, a multimedia sculptor and painter, and the granddaughter of Sir Winston Churchill. This bright, painted aluminum piece perfectly satisfies both the artist’s and the designer’s senses of whimsy. “The room immediately comes to life,” says Bradfield. A pair of mirrored niches featuring classic Greek vessels flanks a corridor approach to the marble and clean-lined master bathroom through expansive dressing rooms and reflect the amazing view. Like the rolling sea outside, each room in this splendid penthouse apartment is fluid and graceful, expertly rendered by a skilled practitioner of modern style and design. “What makes the residence so enormously appealing is its very simplicity— the emphasis on comfort and the joyous focus on nature and art,” says Bradfield. When the owner saw his finished residence for the first time, he was simply delighted.
I attempt to achieve a more rooted, tactile brand of modernism, embracing comfort, form and function.” — Geoffrey BradfIeld

Whether you Want to sWing from a trapeze With your kids or relax in an adults-only retreat, Club med punta Cana has you Covered With its latest offerings.
Top: Club Med Punta Cana has partnered with Cirque du Soleil to launch a new concept in experiential travel, which will allow guests to learn a variety of acrobatic feats from the pros.
If you have ever wanted to run away and join the circus, Club Med Punta Cana can make your dream come true. And the best part is, it includes all the fun and excitement you’d ever want without the bizarre factor we commonly assotciate with the circus. Yes, the Club Med of 2015 is a completely different concept from the images that the brand’s name once conjured in our minds 40, 30, or even 20 years ago. Actually, the all-inclusive, beachside brand was conceived more than 60 years ago, back when sun, sand and surf were about all we required to remain entertained. Nowadays—and for South Floridians in particular—there has to be more. Much more. After all, we’ve got sun and sand year-round, usually less than 20 minutes in any direction from our front doors. Enter Cirque du Soleil, the world-renowned circus arts entertainment company. You see their shows when they come to town several times a year, but until now, you haven’t been able to make them a component of your vacation. That’s because Cirque has partnered with Club Med to launch a new and definitely unique concept in experiential travel with Club Med CREACTIVE by Cirque du Soleil. The CREACTIVE concept will debut at Club Med Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic this June, and instead of just watching, you, as a guest of the resort, will be able to actually learn the exciting acrobatic disciplines showcased in the company’s famous productions. We’re talking high bungee, flying trapeze, aerial silk, tightrope and trampoline, juggling, percussion, dance and mask painting, among other adventures—all under the auspices of a Cirque du Soleiltrained staff. May 2015
top: the deluxe guestrooms include separate seating areas. above: zen Oasis, the property’s upcoming adults-only section set to open this December, features enormous soaking tubs, a palapa for yoga lessons and a wellness bar.
“This partnership is a natural progression stemming from the success and uniqueness of Club Med having provided circus instruction for over 25 years,” explains Cirque du Soleil president and CEO Daniel Lamarre, while Club Med chairman and CEO Henri Giscard d’Estaing adds, “This new concept will leverage, for the benefit of Club Med guests, the expertise and knowledge of Cirque du Soleil, who are unrivaled innovators in the realm of circus artistry. It will also capitalize on the heritage and talent of Club Med in creating extraordinary memories in beautiful vacation destinations.” So that’s one way to spend your vacation at Club Med Punta Cana. But say you view the DR as a place to take in natural beauty—the modern version of the aforementioned sun, sand and surf—in peace rather than flying through the air. If that scenario is what appeals to you, the property’s new Zen Oasis area has been designed with you in mind and is reserved for adult guests only. And they know what grown-ups like; to wit: brand-new deluxe guest rooms with spa-like bathrooms boasting rainfall showers, enormous soaking tubs, chromatherapy lighting and L’Occitane toiletries, and wellness amenities such as yoga mats and plush outdoor daybeds on private terraces or gardens for lounging. Scheduled to open this December, the Zen Oasis will also offer up a calm Zen pool with in-water lounge chairs, a lap pool, a secluded beach, a breezy palapa for yoga lessons and a wellness bar serving healthy smoothies, teas and light bites—and of course, cocktails, because you are

In general, Club Med Punta Cana is a dreamy spot for anyone who can appreciate a gorgeous beachfront setting and a ridiculously long list of activity choices, from tennis to archery to watersports. The spa experience is not to be missed, either; it’s the first and only L’Occitane-branded spa in the Caribbean. He’s a true original with a twang that still cuts to the core. $30, Little, Brown and Company.

What’s your go-to meal after a late night at the restaurant?
“A bowl of popcorn—fresh, not microwaved. i’m obsessed with the Crown Jewel brand; it’s the only one i’ll eat. the last thing i want to do when it comes to just me is cook, but if i get home and my husband is hungry, it’s on. the other night i made chicken pot pies from scratch.”
Favorite guilty pleasure?
“Foie gras. i try to stay away from it, but it keeps pulling me back.”
JUST CALL HER QUEEN Michelle Bernstein is everyone’s favorite hoMetown hero, and we can’t get enough of what she’s cooking up next.
Favorite South Florida dish?
“growing up, i always loved just-picked strawberries that were warm from the sun. People rave about the sticky buns at Knaus Berry Farm, but for me it’s always been about the strawberries.”
Favorite way to spend your day off?
“We make sure to have family time together. A perfect day off is riding scooters or bikes with my son, a swim at the beach and a nice meal together.”
Favorite ingredient to work with?
“right now i’m having a lot of fun with beets—i’m making a ton of borscht—and sorghum, which is an ancient grain that you can use in risotto, salads, or popped like popcorn.”
By Jennifer Leslie Kramer If you’ve been in Miami for any length of time, a simple reference to “Michelle” conjures images of crispy fried chicken, ham and blue cheese croquetas and blistered squash blossoms—favorites from the empire of eateries she has created. Her restaurants, from Michy’s and Sra. Martinez to Crumb on Parchment and Seagrape, have been lauded by locals in the know and industry bibles like Food & Wine and Gourmet. But Bernstein wasn’t always convinced she would be a chef. “There was no big ‘aha’ moment,” she says. “It wasn’t until years later, in the thick of it at Azul, did I realize this was my career. I still sometimes scratch my head and wonder how it all worked out.” Since opening Michy’s nine years ago, Bernstein is the first to admit how drastically the South Florida dining scene has changed. “What we used to consider casual can now be fine dining; there’s literally been a 180-degree shift,” she says. Because of that, along with the need for something new and a constant urge to never stop 158 AventurA MAgAzine
creating, Bernstein and her husband-cum-business partner, David Martinez, shuttered Michy’s at the end of last summer to prepare for a complete overhaul. “The time was right; we had been thinking about it for years,” she admits. “Once it closed, we took a step back. We weren’t sure what we would do or what exactly we wanted from the space. But it gave us some breathing room to pursue other projects.” Such projects include her new Saturday morning program, SoFlo TASTE, a menu at MIA’s new Centurion Lounge set to open this summer and a partnership with Memorial Cancer Institute to create a collection of healthy meals for oncology patients receiving chemotherapy treatments at the hospital. Walking into Klima, Miami Beach’s latest culinary concept highlighting Spain and its nearby Western Med neighbors, is a bit surprising. The mammoth space includes a sizeable bar and lounge area, a spacious dining room with a covered veranda, and an upstairs space that will soon transform into a private lounge. And yet, once you’re settled in to the cozy space—amongst the wooden bookcases, colorful rugs and modern art—you’ll suddenly feel as though you’re dining at your best friend’s house, where the chef just happens to have a serious pedigree. Begin by tucking into dishes like Iberico Ham with Pata Negra bread and fresh tomatoes and the traditional Salmorejo, a cold tomato bread soup known throughout the Andalusian region. And don’t miss the Pork Ribs with fingerling potatoes and roasted-‘til-sweet garlic and shallots, or the Veal-Stuffed Cannelloni. You may have to go back a few times to try everything you want, but it’s worth it.

TED’S AT YOUNGARTS Dinner and a show may not be a novel concept, but when the National YoungArts Foundation and Starr Restaurants Catering Group team up to make it happen, it becomes something else entirely. On the 7th floor of Miami’s iconic Bacardi building, the dual culinary and cultural destination sits just outside the burgeoning Arts & Entertainment District and is designed by Frank Gehry, who also happens to be YoungArts’ artistic advisor. Besides the variety of visual and performing arts acts diners witness during their meal, which run the gamut from pop, classical and jazz music to dance, spoken word and more, all performed by talented YoungArts’ alums, the space also offers panoramic city views and immersive 360-degree HD video projection, which bathes the walls and ceiling in an ever-changing combination of photos, video and art work. And then there’s the food: a creamy burrata with bright heirloom tomatoes and anchovy croutons, seriously spicy shrimp bao buns and lamb kofta with light-as-air spaghetti squash. have been trying to do something with Auberge and its managing partner, Mark Harmon, for a long time,” says Carlos Rosso, president of Related Group’s condo division. “We have wanted them on the East Coast, but they were hesitant because they felt they weren’t flamboyant enough for us.” Auberge Resorts & Hotels has indeed created a portfolio of stunning, yet under-the-radar properties, each with its own distinctive character and concern for sustainable living; among them are Auberge du Soleil and Calistoga Ranch in Oversized Napa Valley, CA; Esperanza Resort in Cabo San Lucas, terraces—some with Mexico; Hotel Jerome in Aspen, CO; and Malliouhana private pools—along with floor-to-ceiling glass Hotel & Spa in Anguilla, British West Indies. windows, open floorplans Other than a stint with the Inn at Palmetto Bluff, and an abundance of an environmentally sound, opulent resort/spa and natural materials bring home development property in Bluffton, SC, Auberge is the outside in. the East Coast’s new kid on the block. In addition to Fort Lauderdale, Auberge is also on board for a Miami development near Museum Park and another in New York. “Auberge is not flashy; they are consistently high-end, low-profile,” says Rosso. “They see Florida as an international market. They talk to us about Brazil and other places. We hope to continue working with them.” Units at Fort Lauderdale’s Auberge Beach Residences & Spa will range in price from $1.8 million to $8 million. Developers hope to break ground by September, with the first tower being completed in 22 months. Choices will range from one-bedroom units to penthouses with seven bedrooms. The 17-story north tower will have a curved facade of expansive cascading terraces and 56 larger residences. Already, buyers have been heading to the sales center from Fort Lauderdale and around Broward County, as well as from northeastern cities like Boston and New York and the Midwestern hub of Chicago. “This is the first real luxury condo in Fort Lauderdale, located at the best site,” says Rosso of the overwhelming interest in the project, which offers 500 feet of beachfront with water views, a pool and deck, lush gardens and a beautiful spa. Such promised amenities in this prime oceanfront location are in part why NFL Hall of Famer Dan Marino became interested in living there.

“This beautiful stretch of coastline’s serene and calm environs informed our design direction from palette to material choices.” — Will Meyer
ABOve: the property’s pools take advantage of the 500 feet of prime oceanfront property. inSet: Al fresco dining at Auberge’s open-style restaurant will offer ocean views and an outdoor bar and veranda.
The timing is perfect for the local star and his wife Claire to spread their wings. “We’ll become empty nesters as the last of our kids heads for college in the fall,” says Marino, who spent many years living in Weston and Parkland. “I’ve known Related Group head Jorge Perez for quite some time, and after learning of this project I was excited about the opportunity to live on Fort Lauderdale Beach.” The interiors of Auberge Beach Residences hold the promise of a life of quiet opulence and staggering beauty. Meyer Davis Studio in New York, a firm that has designed 1 Hotel South Beach, W Chicago Lakeshore Dr. and Paramount Hotel in Manhattan, will also handle this project, utilizing natural materials to highlight the unexpected. They believe that great design works on many levels, weaving together bold looks with striking details to create both immediate impact and lasting memory. Interiors ranging in size from 1,500 to 5,000 square feet will be a subtle sanctuary of refined taste that complements the natural setting. Open contemporary floorplans will feature continuous glass railings, which enclose oversized terraces, some with garden-inspired private pools. Auberge is also known for its fine cuisine, so the team at Meyer Davis is designing the living spaces around a spacious contemporary chef’s kitchen. The waterfront location of the property was a factor in every design decision. “This beautiful stretch of coastline’s serene and calm environs informed our design direction from palette to material choices,” says Will Meyer, a principal in the firm. “We’ll create a sense of place unique to the destination that takes cues from the graceful style of Auberge Resorts, whose properties are acclaimed for timelessness and intimate, understated elegance.” The architecture, by Nichols, Brosch, Wurst, Wolfe & Associates
of Coral Gables, will be a departure from coastal contemporary and traditional designs. Two glazed structures with sleek, organic facades will strike a balance between natural form and restrained sophistication. With each residence capturing unblemished ocean views, the design promises to blur the boundaries between interior spaces and the outdoors through the use of tones and textures endemic to the seaside location. The project’s public areas will offer a sense of community in a design that is described as a casual and upscale “urban beach retreat.” Neutral tones and natural wood finishes promise a gallery-esque backdrop ideal for showcasing topnotch contemporary art, which will be installed throughout the property. The showstopper will be La Maternidad, a monumental bronze sculpture by Fernando Botero. “Original works of art will infuse the project with energy and sophistication,” says Jorge Perez, founder, chairman and CEO of Related Group and one of the world’s major collectors of Latin American art as well as a $40 million benefactor of the eponymous Perez Art Museum in Miami. “Botero is among the most renowned artists of his generation. The introduction of his La Maternidad to the property’s permanent collection signifies our commitment to introduce an unmatched luxury lifestyle and cultural experience to Fort Lauderdale.” Naturally, that lifestyle includes al fresco dining, and to that end, the property’s open-style restaurant will offer views of the ocean and an outdoor bar and veranda with seating. The spa will mirror the company’s outstanding West Coast properties offering natural beauty products and relaxation treatments inspired by the seaside locale. “Everything about Auberge involves the essence of things,” says Rosso. “They offer the best spas, the best service and the best food. We will convey it.”
