Art Is

THE

Today, at long last, Miami owns a wellearned reputation for being an arts city. Until Art Basel Miami Beach made its debut here in 2002, and even for a number of years afterwards, we heard the term “wannabe” bandied about when “art” and “Miami” were mentioned in the same sentence. That’s no longer the case. And when it comes to lifestyle—the surroundings in which we choose to live, the colors and possessions and furnishings that make us feel not only comfortable, but content in our homes—art is more subjective than it is anywhere else. Artful living does not mean living with actual works of art; it is about creating that unique, singular environment in which we and our families feel the happiest, the most secure, the most welcomed, the most serene. Some of us have a flair for creating that space for ourselves;

Lenny Kravitz talks interior design on page 64.

44

AVENTURA MAGAZINE

others don’t. That’s where interior designers come in. And like artists, Miami seems to draw the best from around the country and the world. Over the past ten years or so, those designers have been responsible for creating some of the most magnificent projects—residential and commercial alike—by sourcing an ever-growing community of showrooms throughout Aventura, the Design District and Downtown Miami, and in pockets in between. These are not all necessarily just for the chosen few anymore, either; purveyors of fine furniture, lighting, flooring,

wall and window treatments, kitchen fittings, et al. have considered carefully the fact that we all want in on this beautiful life, and they’ve responded in kind. Whether you live in an apartment, a condominium, a cottage in the Grove, a sprawling single-family home or on a yacht most of the year, artful living can be yours to enjoy. So here we present our first annual Interior Design Issue, with Lenny Kravitz—Grammywinning rock and roller, yes, but also the founder of Kravitz Design, which is the talent behind Paramount Bay right here in South Florida—on our cover. He represents everything about the vibe of our city, when it comes to not just interior design but also lifestyle: hot, cool, sexy, creative, smart, stylish and ever-evolving, never stagnant. We already knew we were lucky to be living here, but the proof just keeps on showing up. That’s what makes life in South Florida so inspiring. Enjoy the issue.

Along Came A

Spyder THE 2016 LAMBORGHINI HURACÁN SPYDER, BEST EXPERIENCED TOP DOWN. By Steve Siler

AVENTURA MAGAZINE

It’s hard to imagine attracting more attention than driving a Lamborghini Huracán. But we figured out a way: go topless. We’re talking about the Lamborghini going topless, of course, although if you want to go topless yourself, that’s entirely up to you. You may remember that when we featured the Huracán coupe in our pages last Spring, not only was it fast and loud and everything a Lamborghini is expected to be; it also proved solid, sophisticated, and surprisingly comfortable. The only thing

that could make it better would be to lose its pesky roof, which, alas, is fixed for posterity. Well, along came a Spyder, as the saying goes…to address the problem. The Huracán “Spyder”— essentially Euro-speak for “roadster,” or twoseat convertible—was always planned, but Lamborghini gave the hardtop a couple of years to establish its sports car bona fides before allowing this “lifestyle” model, as Lamborghini calls it, to come along and soften its image. Supercar status thus achieved, it’s time for the ragtop. While a topless supercar is still a supercar, Lamborghini candidly admits that the Spyder is as much about the glamour of being seen in a Lamborghini as the experience of driving one. Fittingly, then, Lamborghini hosted the worldwide launch of the Huracán Spyder just down the road in Miami, a city known for its razzle-dazzle hotels, chesty females, vibrant art scene and spectacular displays of wealth, if not for its great roads. Sure, Homestead-Miami Speedway is nearby, but Lamborghini didn’t take us there; rather, we were simply cut loose in South Florida’s notoriously sluggish traffic to see what sort of “lifestyle” this sunny Lambo might afford us.

For the see-and-be-seen set, the Huracán Spyder is brilliant, for obvious reasons. While onlookers will ogle endlessly the Huracán hardtop’s extreme, beveled flatness—who can blame them?—they don’t always see who’s behind the darkened glass. Different story with the Spyder. When people see this car with the top down, their eyeballs almost immediately zero in on its occupants, who, the way most folks see it, really ought to be smiling. Fortunately, we usually were, and especially when kids were involved, would wave, say hello and, when parked, sometimes allowed people to come take a seat. And trust us, you haven’t seen a smile as wide as that of an adolescent boy at the wheel of a Lamborghini. What we also found is that there’s nothing particularly soft about this car—save, perhaps, for the square yard or so of fabric that disappears in 17 seconds at the touch of a button. Even with 265 extra pounds of roof-related components aboard, the Spyder still looks and drives like the supercar it is. The screaming, 602-hp V-10 nestled just a few inches behind the passengers still serves up explosive acceleration, with 60 mph arriving in a tick over three seconds. Its top speed matches the hardtop’s 201 mph even with the top down. The steering remains virtually telepathic, and while the suspension is supposedly softer than the coupe, you’d have to have Princess and the Peastyle sensitivity to tell the difference. What the Spyder lifestyle does not afford is much luggage space; the small storage shelf behind the seats in the coupe is gone, so other than a small “frunk” in the nose that can hold maybe two shopping bags, there’s precious little 58

AVENTURA MAGAZINE

room for impulse acquisitions. Apparently, the Spyder lifestyle also involves keeping a Range Rover in reserve. Whereas the Huracán coupe seems happiest at the track, the Spyder was at its best when cruising through downtown Miami with its rorty exhaust note bouncing off the glass skyscrapers and a great view not just in front of us, but above us, too. The Spyder lets you drive a Lamborghini while still feeling engaged by the places you’re driving through. It’s as gregarious as the coupe is intense. If this is what Lamborghini means by “lifestyle,” sign us up.

designs tables and chairs with glamorous metallic touches, door knockers, cabinet pulls and knobs that are handsome and edgy, wall tiles that offer a personal and contemporary interpretation of tridimensional decor, and interiors that radiate what he calls a “soulful elegance.” No, the award-winning musician has not given up his stellar career. But he has turned his creative eye to design. With celebrated collaborations in Miami and around the world on both residential and commercial interior projects, as well as with new product designs, the musical maverick has struck a new chord that is distinctly his. The rocker’s company, Kravitz Design, Inc. (KDI), was founded in 2003 by the singer-songwriter, composer, multi-instrumentalist, photographer and actor to satisfy his craving for fine design. Now he’s creating furniture, rugs, lamps, pillows and wall decor for CB2 (Crate and Barrel), door and cabinet hardware for Rocky Mountain Hardware, and ceramic tile for Lea Ceramiche. (He also has designed a collection of sunglasses and watches for Chilli Beans in Brazil, and his interest in photography led him to create a limited-edition camera and case for Leica called the “Correspondent”.) Kravitz has a genuine passion for all kinds of design, especially masculine sprinkled with glamour. In the past decade, he has designed interiors around the world, including Miami’s Paramount Bay Residences, a 47-story bayfront condo; South Beach’s Recording Studio in The Setai; and The Florida Room at the Delano. He’s designed luxury suites for the SLS hotel brand in Miami Beach and Las Vegas, pop-up concepts for Pepsi’s Kola House hospitality brand in Milan and Dubai, and helped relaunch the world-famous French boîte L’Arc in Paris. KDI is also working on the interior design of the 35-unit condo 75 Kenmare in New York’s Nolita neighborhood. Kravitz’s vision centers on a layered environment, drawing inspiration from the downtown vibe and Nolita’s own style, culture and rhythm, while integrating natural stones, bonded metal and aged oak. Kravitz says he is creating an environment that feels contemporary and refined, yet warm and inviting. He recently completed the unique Sound Lounge, a multi-purpose environment where luxury condo residents at the Art Deco-styled Kent in Manhattan can watch TV or movies, play music together, or practice their instruments. His inspiration came from one of his own recording studios.

66

AVENTURA MAGAZINE

Comparing the creativity between music and design comes easily for him. “It’s the same creative spirit and process regardless of the medium,” explains Kravitz, who lives in the Bahamas and visits Miami frequently. “It organically starts with a feeling and then evolves until it becomes what it wants to become. The music, design, photography and acting all feed off of each other.” Kravitz, 52, was born in Manhattan to creative parents. His late mother, Roxie Roker, was an actress best known for her character Helen Willis on the popular 1970s sitcom The Jeffersons. His late father, Sy Kravitz, was an NBC-TV news producer. Kravitz grew up in a hub of creativity and design without being fully aware of what they were. As a boy, he amused himself by banging on pots and pans in the kitchen, playing them as makeshift drums as early as age 3. Even then, he was a natural musician

and innovator. “I became interested in design as a kid without realizing what it actually was,” he recalls. “I was instinctively creating environments around me that allowed me to feel creative and engaged.” He moved to Los Angeles with his mother’s show business career and attended Beverly Hills High School, spending his most formative years around talented, interesting people and traveling the world. Kravitz became cosmopolitan and curious, and no matter what he was doing, he always wanted to keep things fresh. Even as his musical career took off and he became a bona fide superstar, Kravitz took his interest and fascination for design seriously, eventually developing a style he now calls “soulful elegance.” He incorporates inspiration from his personal experiences and travels into his product design, and a great deal of the natural environment and

energy for his interiors. Perhaps the French designer Philippe Starck put it best and most colorfully when he said, “Lenny is a weapon of mass construction. He is an explosion of all talents, an unlimited boiling bucket of culture, a daily firework, a tireless explorer.” For example, Kravitz’s brilliant work at Paramount Bay generated talk around the world. Located on Miami’s Biscayne Corridor, the stunning Arquitectonica-designed building with creative input by Kravitz is a reflection of refined city living coupled with the flair of a casual beach home. Cool, sophisticated, international, tropical and urban all at once, much of Paramount Bay captures just what Lenny Kravitz is all about. For the high-rise’s interiors, he married the natural beauty and energetic vibe of Miami into a design that is both functional and inspirational. With the use of vibrant wallpaper, dazzling chandeliers, unique furnishings and the finest materials, his attention to detail is meticulous. “I love the laid-back casual vibe and the fact that Miami is very international,” says Kravitz of the city he says still feels like home. “The work I’ve done there has always embraced its casual nature and tropical environment. I’ve spent a great deal of time in Miami since I was born. My Bahamian aunt settled in Miami, so it was a constant destination. As an adult, I moved there in the early 1990s,” though he has since relocated. “Since I am based in the Bahamas, I go often to Miami. I am inspired by the amount of energy and creativity going on there now with the new development in places like Wynwood, and by the work of people like Matt Sherman at Jugo Fresh and Roma Cohen at Alchemist.” JUNE 2016

The collection captures the edgy glam of the 1970s New York club culture and the natural ease of the same period’s California music scene. “I travel all over the world as a musician, so I see things in different countries and from different cultures that continually inspire me, which keeps the designs fresh,” says Kravitz, who uses his own products in his Bahamian home and in another of his houses in Brazil. The CB2 collection is made of materials that include high-impact pairings of lush textiles, leather, wood and reflective surfaces. Some examples are the Foxy Table, with a dish-like top that can hold a sheepskin-covered cushion; the Nova Table, with a faceted underside; and the circular YaYa Table, which hides a storage compartment beneath a removable wooden tray. The Lola table lamp has a polished metal base that has been likened to an “upside down wine glass.” Cushions and rugs are custom designed in bold colors and sophisticated stripes and patterns. “Lenny and his team helped create a collection that is beautiful, practical, earthy and elegant,” says CB2 managing director Ryan Turf. For Rocky Mountain Hardware, a respected manufacturer of bronze architectural hardware, Kravitz created Trousdale, a cool collection for both doors and cabinets. Inspired by the architecture of the Trousdale Estates neighborhood in Beverly Hills—mid-century modern homes that made their mark in the 1950s and ‘60s as a favorite of celebrity residents—the glamorous collection offers sleek architectural elements with angular 68

profiles and a strong textural effect. There are seven lever, grip and knob designs, four cabinet pulls and knobs, and five accessory pieces, including a remarkable door knocker. “I was drawn to Rocky Mountain Hardware because of the high-quality products they produce,” says Kravitz. “They create handcrafted hardware with timehonored casting methods. It was a pleasure to work with their talented artisans.” His collaboration with Lea Ceramiche results in Goccia, a new wall tile collection. The tiles serve as modules that create different tridimensional shapes, which play on concave and convex rigorously in black and white. Lights and shadows suggest the continuous movements of the water recreated in stylized shapes. Kravitz also designs private residences and is looking at another condo and hotel project in Miami. His work and its mass acceptance stimulates him and makes him want to design more. “When I see people react in a positive or surprised way to the design, the product, or the environment, I am rewarded,” says Kravitz. And so are they.

Solesdi Does Italian Right Located in Miami’s fast-evolving Design District neighborhood, the Solesdi Showroom has been home to three powerhouse Italian design brands since 2012: kitchen and bath purveyor Boffi, one-of-a-kind hardwood floor manufacturer Listone Giordano, and contemporary furniture makers Henge. This spring, the showroom introduced three newly acquired collections from RODA, DePadova and nerosicilia, expanding its second level from 2,500 to 3,500 square feet. Divided with designated spaces for each line, all six brands coexist throughout the space and extend into the open-air courtyard to give customers a more integrated and imaginative home furnishing experience. “We worked closely with each major brand, a local architect and our extraordinary team here to make this expansion become a reality,” says general manager Max Bonati. “The main idea is to offer a one-stop-shop where our customers can find masterfully designed kitchens, baths, surfaces, wood floors, lamps and tables, all with the same high-quality DNA.” In addition to bringing in the three new brands, the showroom is introducing a new on-site customer-care division to assist in offering their clientele a more holistic shopping process. Pipeline Workspaces: Cubicle, be gone! The traditional workplace is rapidly going the way of dial-up Internet. Cubicles are disappearing as employers embrace open office layouts that promote collaboration—and Pipeline Workspaces is contributing to the growing trend by creating shared workspaces that inspire their members with interiors and design elements that speak to each space’s specific audience. The concept: there is no one-size-fits-all approach to designing a shared workspace, especially in an international hub like Miami, where three out of Pipeline’s five workspaces are currently located and where

every neighborhood has its own unique personality. For example, Pipeline Brickell mimics the area’s sleek feel and professional backdrop with an all-white event space and conference rooms; one of the focal points is “The Garden,” an area with garden walls, hanging chairs and writable walls where professionals meet to exchange ideas. Pipeline Coral Gables reflects the historical and architectural influences of the area with Mediterraneanstyle design elements and Spanish-inspired accent pieces such as a coat of arms, bull’s head and candelabra; and Pipeline Doral was inspired by elements of Doral’s past and future, with a café that resembles a cargo container and an old-school music room where members can stimulate their minds with a selection of vinyl records and spin tables. Through their work, they’ve not only earned a reputation for their signature design and creation of bespoke organic modern pieces, but they have also won two awards from the International Property Awards for Best Apartment Design and Highly Commended Private Residence in Florida in 2015. WHAT’S IN BLOOM Throughout its 60-year history, Tai Ping has always believed in collaboration with designers across a range of disciplines to maximize its craft’s full potential. To that end, check out Bloom, a collection of 14 handmade wool and silk rugs designed in collaboration with Jeff Leatham, an artist working in the medium of flowers and living plants who’s known for pushing the limits of his domain. He’s also known for his skill with composition and remarkable eye for graphic contrast and color, as seen in his first foray into handmade textiles. “We didn’t take flowers as our starting point with Jeff,” says Tai Ping global creative director JeanPierre Tortil. “Because he is a painter or architect of living organic form, we started with geometry and color, his particular specialties.” The rugs that form Bloom are a study in contrast and juxtaposition achieved through different shades of deeply saturated wool and silk; color gradation—long a hallmark of Tai Ping—is also featured prominently in the collection, and different piles, knots and yarns are contrasted to create a variegated field that invites touch. “I wanted to achieve a harmony of color and shape with this collection,” says Leatham, “with a result that wasn’t just something to look at or walk on. In the way we’ve mixed colors and shapes of the patterns, to me there’s a romanticism and modernity to Bloom, which I love. The artisans at Tai Ping are so innovative. It was exciting for me to see.”

The original fireplace is painted blue. The New Mexican artist Miguel Martinez painted the Virgin Mary and child in a modern adaptation. The Italian chandelier is made of glass. LTHOUGH HER BUSINESS BEGAN IN 1988 AS A small Bayside store selling Country French accessories, owner Margarita Courtney has come a long way. Today, Margarita and her daughter Cristina Courtney Boland, 41, own and operate Margaux Interiors, a large retail home and design showroom on Miami’s Sunset Drive, and an interior decoration business to create magical homes for private clients. The mother-daughter team’s passion for travel and discovering unusual furniture and accessories, plus an interest in fine arts and studying new and old trends, has translated into a dynamic design business. “We do ‘Florida elegant’ work,” says Margarita, who brought her daughter to Miami from New York in 2000 to join forces. “I love beautiful things. When we do a house, we consider the clients and create a personal home with design they love.” The business—which now does 60 percent in home decor and 40 percent in retail sales— is thriving. The women divide their duties accordingly so everything is covered. Margarita is the head designer, buyer and merchandiser. While Cristina designs and buys, she also oversees the business and manages the design projects. So each partner is in charge of what she knows and does the best. Margarita hails from Puerto Rico; Cristina, who grew up in Miami Beach, graduated from Boston College in 1977, majoring in Art History and Spanish Literature. She immediately began buying for the home department at New York’s tony department store Bergdorf Goodman, then later switched

gears to join ABC Carpet & Home. At both respected retailers, Cristina gained invaluable work experience, and her mother was eager for her to come home and share her expertise. “I came back to Miami because Mom wanted me,” says Cristina. “We get along well with design ideas, and it’s really great working together.” Adds Margarita, “Cristina does more in some houses, but our workload is basically equal. We each contribute to everything. It’s a nice split.” Margarita was keen on her daughter coming home to join the business because she was born into it. She felt that Cristina’s talent coupled with her valuable experience in New York would add a whole new dimension to the company. “It has been a good move,” agrees Cristina. “We have amazing projects and love what we do.” The Margaux Interiors showroom, which looks like elegant rooms within a lovely home, sells furniture, lighting, wallpaper and other home decor products. Last year, the showroom was awarded “Best of Houzz” for design and customer satisfaction by the leading platform for home remodeling and design. The owners also create lifestyles for their customers by designing and manufacturing custom pieces that bring out the best in a client’s personality. Some examples are cocktail, side and dining tables, media chests and wall units made to measure in solid oak, curtains and bedding in a variety of fabrics, sofas and ottomans in a client’s desired fabrics and finishes, and eclectic throw pillows. “Anyone shopping can come in and buy retail at the showroom,” says Margarita. “But we give discounts to our design clients.” The private design side of the business is exciting for the women and growing rapidly as a natural adjunct to their showroom sales. The partners like to see how their merchandise looks in the homes of well traveled and sophisticated clients. They favor linen fabrics and ocean colors that are not too casual. For example, they created the decor for a 15,000-square-foot vacation home in South Miami. The client is an Italian family from Milan. The family members are peripatetic snowbirds who come and go from Miami and travel around the world. “They wanted a mix of the Florida look with formal tradition,” says Margarita of the design theme. “They bring their family and friends to Miami and wanted everything to be perfect. We worked on this residence for many years.” Calling the decor “transitional”, they mixed and matched Florida colors and accessories such as tropical green balls and green and white throw pillows with dark wood furniture in the living room. The kitchen is modern, large and open; the dining room is formal with staggeringly beautiful drapery and a festive throw rug over smooth, ballroom-inspired floors.  Most of the bedrooms and bathrooms are cool and modern with art and pillows popping in color. “We adapt and design

around things the client wants while using our own expertise,” says Margarita. “We like neutral colors—white, ivory and gray— then we add splashes of blue, navy, aqua and orange to accent.” Another residence the women decorated is located in Pinecrest. The client’s husband built the house with high ceilings and allowed for the use of ample natural light. The couple had raised their children in this home using dated furnishings from both sides of their families. Once the children had grown up, the client wanted a fresh start. Margaux Interiors was hired to modernize the home, bring in new pieces and lend it charm and beauty. Excited about the potential for this 4,000-square-foot residence, the partners decorated it room by room and took their time to do it right. “The client is an art curator and likes modern art,” says Margarita. “So we worked with her personal collection.” The living room is elegant and simple yet dramatic, with sheer linen drapery, textured pillows, crystal chandelier and a sofa with hand-carved wood. The owner had never bought pieces for the house and was excited to work with the women on design. “We painted the walls blue,” says Margarita. “We bought furniture together and gave the room a modern look.” In the family room, they used a chandelier that is a piece of art and helps attract natural light. There is also a desk and a purple sofa. One bedroom is Moroccan themed with mirrored night stands and deep blue walls, while the master uses subdued light blues with pale-toned linens. “This is a simple yet beautiful home with a consistent style that we call the ‘house of light,’” says Margarita. “I love making things look beautiful, and I am conscious of detail.” For her own 1934 Miami Beach home with large rooms facing the Indian Creek Canal, Margarita created a dream house using blues and aquas. Modern and Mediterranean in style, the six-bedroom, four-bath home has a romantic interior patio and courtyard with a cobalt-blue fountain. (It is so filled with charm and cinematic sensuality, Cristina chose to be married in the house.) Margarita says the entire home is well balanced and not stuffy. It is filled with accessories she has purchased over the years during her trips around the world. There are doors at the courtyard that she bought in India and teak pieces at the entrance to the house painted ivory. Linen curtains hang from arches and various other exotic touches remind Margarita of those special trips. “The house could have been traditional but I made it transitional,” says Margarita. “The patio and courtyard have a Moroccan look. But the entire house is unique.” One of the things both women love about Miami is the mix and match of cultures. They can design using a tropical palette, but always keep in mind that there are international options to integrate depending on the client’s background. “We’re excited about the future of our business,” Margarita says. “We love to design and capture the soul of Miami, an American city with different influences.” 92

was commissioned by an Italian family to design their new 8,000-square-foot home in Tequesta, she had to enlighten them on South Florida waterfront living. The designer didn’t feel several of their Old World design ideas would bring them the most pleasure in their new residence. “When I learned they were into colors like brown and gold, I explained that this project needed to become a coastal home with northeastern flair,” says Watterworth, known for her classic contemporary style focusing on simplicity, clean lines and unexpected use of color. “I wanted to respect their heritage but make it light and bright.” Watterworth, who owns a design studio in Palm Beach County, met the couple through their children. “Our kids go to school together,” she says. “When we discussed their house, the wife said she wanted a home [that was] professionally designed, but that it shouldn’t look that way. She wanted an effortless ‘wow’ factor, which was not easy to do.” The designer toured their newly constructed, two-story house, which has four bedrooms, seven baths (four full and three half) and a five-car garage, along with lots of extras like a movie theater, billiards room, kids’ playroom, summer kitchen, fire pit, swimming pool and dock. It’s located on the North Fork, Loxahatchee River, a beautiful waterway that leads to the ocean through the Jupiter Inlet. The interior design challenge was to move away from the idea the wife had in mind, which reached back to the couple’s heritage, but at the same time keep the northeast touches. This compromise would satisfy both client and designer. “I wanted a coastal-clean take on traditional style,” says Watterworth. “My job as a professional designer is to push the client’s comfort zone and change what they have done for years. I needed to stretch the imagination.”

So Watterworth set out to create a classic interior with contemporary elements for what was to be the family’s dream house. For the flooring throughout, she picked antique white from The Chateau Collection. This standout selection creates a time-worn look that showcases the character and longevity of hardwood. Around the house, doors and trim are done in white. The foyer/entryway—where the steps upstairs are located—has many warm elements. Although the wife wanted dark wood there, the designer explained that neither dark nor heavy wood is an ideal choice for a coastal home. She suggested the space should be bright, open, warm and cozy with touches of the traditional northeastern feel. Once that was accomplished, it was easy to repeat throughout the house. The living areas, with sweeping views of the pool, summer kitchen and back patio, are a perfect example. The great room walls are painted in a baby fawn color; the dining room and kitchen walls are white. While the dining room is separate, the great room and kitchen comprise one large area, giving the family a nice open space for entertaining and living. The great room features high ceilings and impressive millwork, with a white marble fireplace/wall that dominates the room. “The design of the fireplace wall was involved,” the designer says. “We had to deal with high ceilings, and we needed the right scale. We worked on a few different designs for it.” The end result evokes a look of grandeur. A hodgepodge of accessories on white shelves adds subtle color and texture to the room. There is a collection of artistic pieces, including apothecary jars, colorful temple jars, plates, hollowware and other treasures in shiny metal, gold and bronze mixed with pewter. “The wife didn’t want a library look in the great room,” explains Watterworth. “She liked a conversation piece.” The dreamy white kitchen has occasional wisps of color and rich, dark-finished wood chairs that contrast with the bright, light theme. Cabinets are custom, and countertops are quartzite with the look of marble and the durability of granite and two islands instead of one. “The kitchen is a beautiful room,” says Watterworth. “The wife is an amazing cook who likes to entertain and be

part of the party. She wanted a large kitchen and surrounding area.” The white dining room is separate and more contained. The wife wanted to keep this room as traditional and formal as possible to contrast with the contemporary design in the other spaces. Again, Watterworth understood her concerns and worked with her to make it magical. “She wanted a formal dining room, and it was my job to give it warmth,” says the designer. “We compromised with a turnedleg pedestal table, which is a bit more rustic and casual.” The table is handmade, and the dining chairs are upholstered with different fabrics on the front and back. The buffet is simple and blends with millwork in the room. The built-in mirror is also simple, yet elegant. The drapery is white silk taffeta pavilion-stripe with inserted pleats. Watterworth also worked on the master bathroom. Designed with white marble and white tile, the room is serene and open. With the repetition of the clean modern look and white marble used for the fireplace, it follows the same theme. “This room has a clean, coastal feel with a traditional Shakerstyle cabinet,” she says. “I took a classic material with a contemporary application to give the room a ‘wow’ factor.” The undermount soaking tub is well located for relaxing and gazing through the window, which the wife loves; her husband wanted a steam room with a shower next to it, which makes him happy. In tandem, the couple also raved about the rest of their new home and how peaceful and warm it feels for them and their 13-year-old twins. “The layout is perfect for our family and there is not one room we do not use,” the wife says. “There is plenty of room for everyone to have personal space, but somehow it remains cozy and comfortable. Every day I wake up and can’t believe I live here.” Watterworth said the wife liked being involved with the design process. But after their conversations, she was able to pull her away from the dated direction that would have been a mistake. With its cooler, contemporary touches added to the classic feel, the family can enjoy this house for years to come. “It is warm, traditional and sensible, yet feels fresh, open and clean,” says Watterworth. “To go through the trauma of building a dream home and dealing with the stress of designing it can be taxing. But the wife was so excited with how it all turned out that she cried with joy.” 106

COMBINING FREEDOM OF THE OPEN-AIR with the luxurious comforts of a floating home is what makes modern yacht owners happy. Regardless of size, custom craftsmanship of both the vessel’s exterior and interiors must be of the highest quality. From the layout inside to the flow of the decks outside and the bespoke furnishings that work with a low-maintenance boating style—all the while looking magazine-page worthy—the cruising vibe must be functional and fitting for today’s owners. “When having fun is our culture, owning a boat that accommodates your style is the most important aspect,” says David Galante of G Marine, a yacht broker in Miami. Most yacht owners are looking for a home away from home, so the yacht has to provide a comfortable living environment for family and friends, especially if long periods of time will be spent onboard. “The yacht must suit their particular lifestyle needs,” agrees Alev Karagulle, a spokesperson for Burgess Yachts in Miami Beach, a superyacht industry leader with a dozen offices around the globe. “That means lots of outside deck space, a spa area, a gym, a dive center, or provision for carrying a large inventory of tenders and water toys.” Interior design trends today call for less formality in keeping with a laid-back lifestyle aboard, with the “Hampton Beach House” style and contemporary designs among the most popular. Even the more traditional designs take a modern classic approach. While the world of yacht interior design is currently undergoing a creative phase that sees owners pushing the envelope with their designers, features can mimic home trends. For example, yacht designs include large floor-to-ceiling windows to bring in the natural light, a neutral color

palette with a focus on textures, pale marble or limestone bathrooms with huge rain showers, beach club platforms at sea level to be close to the water, on-deck cinemas and decks with panoramic views of the water, and gorgeous artwork highlighting every deck, suite and salon. On larger yachts, the approach is definitely bespoke, with interiors designed to satisfy the client’s most explicit desires. “The sky is the limit, and everything from soft silk furnishings and hand-woven carpets to specially commissioned furniture and original art will be customized to create a unique interior environment,” says Karagulle. “Special marbles are sourced for spa-like bathrooms, and there are unusual touches like leather-lined floors and shagreen-covered walls.” Silver Fast, offered by Burgess, measures 252.6 feet, and is reportedly the world’s largest and fastest aluminum motoryacht with conventional propulsion. The vessel can sleep 18 guests plus 18 crew members. Stunningly beautiful, the yacht’s contemporary interior was conceived by Vain Interiors to be both fresh and luxurious, with teak decks, gray glass mirrors, metallic-painted walls and leather-stitched steps on the central stairwell. The main deck offers great views from large windows and leads to the theater room, which is highlighted by a plasma cinema screen. The “winter garden” is a glass-screened, air conditioned space that allows for indoor/outdoor dining. The sea level “beach club” houses a complete spa with treatment areas; the sun deck with a mirrored bar converts to a TV where movies are viewed from a glass-front whirlpool bath that seats eight. There is also an office, large saloon and romantic outdoor retreat.

Another yacht, Mia Elise, is a160-foot Trinity also offered by Burgess. Its exotic interiors were designed by Patrick Knowles using handcrafted woods in conjunction with neutral textures and fabrics to result in a casual yet elegant backdrop. The aft entrance to the main salon is highlighted by a baby grand digital player piano, and an island credenza separates the lounge from the dining area, which seats a dozen for formal dinners and events. Other new yachts are also mind-boggling in their beauty, attention to detail and overall sophistication with casually elegant interpretations. G Marine represents Astondoa, a respected company celebrating its 100th birthday this year. Astondoa’s $10.5 million, 110 GLX debuted in Miami from the Spanish yacht maker with interiors by Cristiano Gatto Design, who created rooms in tandem with the yacht’s customized, in-house-built furnishings. Gatto has worked with the company for 15 years and calls this boat “massive, yet sexy and sporty.” “The boat was designed to be clean, uncluttered, modern, and most of all, low maintenance,” says company spokesperson Romina Bompani. “The look is termed ‘timeless,’ so the elements are of exotic coffee and textured oak woods complemented by glass and polished stainless to defy being dated in years to come. The owner wanted it to feel like guests were onboard ship—not in a New York City apartment.” Gatto used rich, touchable textures to contrast with the boat’s high-tech elements. Colors are white, beige, brown and black with leather trimming walls, floor and ceilings. The main

The full-beam master suite has beautiful water views and all of the trimmings: a glass wall that changes colors for privacy separates his-and-her sinks and a large shower, a walk-in closet that accommodates two wardrobes of clothing, a dressing area, space for 64 pairs of shoes and accessories, a desk/vanity and lounges. “You could build a larger yacht,” says Galante, “but why, when you can have all you need in 8,000 square feet of interior and exterior space?” For Astondoa’s 80-foot GLX, called Astonish, the owners asked the designers to make the yacht look like their home, complete with electronics and technology. The sporty-looking vessel is designed with a full spectrum of neutral colors from white to taupe, with whitewashed flooring and frosted glass panels recessed into the walls. A large custom-installed TV separates the saloon and dining area where the light leather seating complements the light oak walls, also whitewashed to show the rich grain and to add texture. Staterooms are large, with a master suite on the lower deck, and a master bath shower of stunning curved turquoise glass tile, along with a rain showerhead that lights up when the water is turned on. Also sporty, the approximately 217-foot-long Okto was designed by the late Alberto Pinto. Available from Moran Yacht & Ship, it’s a sleek Italian stunner. The owner wanted a simple yet dynamic look with as much space open to the exterior as possible. The windows allowed for lots of light, so the design team worked with dark woods for the main lounge and a zebrawood for the upper-deck lounge. The whirlpool bath and gym are located on the sun deck to add another pleasurable element of relaxation to cruising. The owner’s cabin is cool, with whitened sycamore wood;

shiny varnished finishes reflect light. Like the rest of the boat, materials were selected to be in sync with the individual space. “The owners wanted a modern, easy-to-livewith yacht,” a company designer says. “And they got it.” Another Moran vessel is the bright and fresh Northern Star (about 247 feet) with interiors designed by Walesbased Pauline Nunns to look like a grand country home. The respected nautical architect and designer Espen Oeino lent the Northern Star a traditional look to satisfy the owner, who has a penchant for exotic foreign travel— to places like Greenland, New Zealand and Labrador, among others. Each of Northern Star’s six decks accommodates 12 guests and 22 crew members. The interior is described by Nunns as “English Country,” perhaps from the Georgian period of grand manor houses. Yachts International defined the furniture as Hepplewhite and Chippendale with painted tables. Floors are of reclaimed old oak wood. Most of the paneling is raised and fielded limed oak or handpainted to match the decor. And the owners collect art of many varieties, so the entire yacht feels like a gallery. The main salon has wine-colored sofas and armchairs arranged around a fireplace, a Steinway player piano and a cleverly designed coffee table that becomes a roulette wheel. Recessed in the white tongue-and-grove ceiling is a hand-painted panel of cherubic angels. The master suite has a library with red tufted-leather couches, a bar, an office and outdoor foredeck seating. But what truly amazes is the tank deck, where the owners and their guests watch movies; it has dark mauve walls and tiered seating, and provides a grand respite for watching more than a thousand films available through the Kaleidoscope system. And for all cruisers who like to escape at sea for extended periods of time, there is nothing better than retaining a well designed superyacht, where bliss and blind ambition are a way of life.

INTERNUM 3841 NE 2nd Ave., Suite 101, Miami, 305.572.1123; internum.com

Known for its luxury furniture from its inception six years ago, Internum has been a go-to for interior designers since the start. Here, items such as wall mirrors from brands like Odette and Guidoriccio take the form of sculpture; Venetian Mermaids, a wall divider designed by Elio Fiorucci for Riva 1920, is a vibrant merging of form and function with its fan of gracefully pointed legs mimicking swimming ladies; even a series of platinum and gold vases, entitled Erosum 4 and designed by Andri Ioannou, look as though they would be equally apropos in a home or an art gallery. The options are endless—and delightful.

URBAN ART 75 NE 39th St., Miami, 305.576.7080; urbanarthome.com

An art and accessory resource for the most discerning interior designers, Urban Art collects continuously from around the world unique, beautiful objects and paintings specifically for the purpose of enhancing the living space, from antiques to sculpture to paintings and accessories. Here you’ll find stone sculptures from Colombia and Korea, plaster torsos from Italy, glass sculptures from France, paintings in oil and acrylic from Spain, Mexico, France and beyond, photography on acrylic, and on and on it goes. Their styles are categorized as Modern/Art Deco, Old World/Antique, Oriental and Ethnic, but none of that matters; what does is that this is one of the vastest and most varied collections of art pieces assembled in one place in Miami, and a can’t-miss for those looking to design from scratch or simply purchase a piece that thrills.

AVANT GALLERY In the Epic Hotel, 270 Biscayne Blvd. Way, Suite 101 Miami, avantgallery.com

The pieces of furniture, sculptures, fine art and photography you’ll find here are unique and thought-provoking, because so many of them look as if they’re impossible to create. To wit: the off-kilter Trippy Table designed in 2009 by Naples, Florida-based artist Chad Jensen, which appears ready to fall over thanks to its precariously spindly legs. Featured artists range from natives of Miami, such as Santlov, with his penchant for Superman, to 15-year-old LA street artist Skyler Grey, to German-born Niclas Castello, whose series of “The Kiss” sculptures put him on the global map. As the gallery puts it so succinctly, Avant offers an evolving collection of critically acclaimed contemporary art and design pieces curated with limited availability and unlimited personality. And that is as accurate as it gets. 140

SOUTHERN ROCK AND LAKSA BROTH A MCINNIS & BOOTH KITCHEN COLLAB ROLLS OUT A REFRESHINGLY HARMONIOUS WELCOME WAGON OF AUTHENTIC CANTONESE DIM SUM AND AMERICAN DIXIE COMFORT FOOD. By Dirk DeSouza

Fresh and vibrant Southern-cum-Asian bites and appetizers are lovingly wheeled from table to table, frequently by the chefs themselves, stocked with irresistible culinary temptations diners choose on the spot within sniffing distance. The airy indoor and outdoor space is an inviting, homey oasis with sights and sounds sprinkled with Dixie and coastal Thailand—picture Southern and ’80s nostalgia rock sonically superimposed against birdcages, thick fishing village-y rope lighting, draught beer served under horn-and-antler handles, copper moonshine stills, bourbon bottle chandeliers and hanging terrariums delicately adorned with succulents, mosses and air plants. “The food is about freedom and flexibility, with a focus on a unique and fun service concept that no one’s done in Miami,” says Chef McInnis, whose Southern fried chicken at Yardbird created a cultlike following, informed by his childhood summers working his family’s farms in deep Alabama. part of the party.

The entryway/foyer leads upstairs and also into the first-floor living area. “This area is bright and open, yet warm and cozy,” says the designer. “I didn’t want anything too heavy for a fine coastal home.”

THE UPCOMING ICON MEDICAL TOWER OF AVENTURA WILL BE A GREEN BUILDING WITH GOLD LEED CERTIFICATION AND A PRIME LOCATION NEAR AVENTURA HOSPITAL & MEDICAL CENTER.

By Linda Marx Located in a blue chip location, Icon Medical Tower of Aventura will be an 11-story, 142,000-square-foot Class-A medical office building. The state-of-the-art facility, which breaks ground in September and is scheduled for completion during the first quarter of 2018, will be within walking distance from Aventura Hospital & Medical Center. Icon will have the capabilities for outpatient services (ambulatory surgery), image diagnostic rooms and medical offices as well as medical-related retail spaces, at least one cafeteria, green terraces for sitting or enjoying lunch, and valet parking for the 540 space parking garage. The medical building is already 30 percent reserved, according to members of the development team. Ralph Mutchnik, a self-made entrepreneur and real estate pro, and general manager Bernardo Rieber have big plans for the project. “The Aventura market is extremely tight,” says Rieber, who holds an MBA in Finance and is a civil engineer with 25 years of experience in the construction field, a general contractor and real estate broker. “The lack of available office supply—and especially medical 162

office—in the Aventura area coupled with growing demand for new product leaves Icon Medical Tower in position to succeed over the long term. The market is home to a high concentration of medical practices and a large, aging patient base. That spells opportunity for health-care companies and physicians.” When compared to other mixed-use/mixed tenant office properties, like Aventura Park Square, which is nearly sold out, Icon Medical Tower fills a void in the market: the entire Class “A” building will be dedicated to tenants in the medical field. Medical office condos have historically been well received by the medical community, specifically among physician practices that occupy space for long periods of time, have access to favorable financing, and build loyal patient bases in their community. Icon Medical Tower’s proximity to Aventura Hospital and its level-two trauma center sets the project apart from its competition. Tenants will have direct access to the hospital and emergency

room, adding an another layer of convenience. Plus, Aventura is well located between Miami-Dade and Broward counties. “Icon Medical Tower will cater to doctors with large specialty practice groups,” says Rieber, “especially those who perform in-office procedures and can benefit from having a hospital and emergency room nearby.” The developers are looking for tenants like surgical groups, orthopedics, imaging, cosmetic/plastic surgery, dental, oncology, cardiology, physical therapy, labs, etc. who will want to be in the center of Aventura’s busy medical district. The building is being designed by Rodriguez/Peterson & Porras located in Miami Lakes. The respected architectural firm specializes in health-care facilities as well as other areas. Architect Orestes Rodriguez, a principal of the firm with 30 years of experience, is the lead architect on the project; the concept is a contemporary-tropical design with a focus on exposure and interaction with nature. A rooftop garden will be cultivated for organic vegetables. Therapeutic activities and other means of healthy living will be offered, plus 7,000 square feet of green terrace on the eighth floor. The building’s artwork and amenities will support and enhance health-care functions and the overall healing process. Single loaded corridors and common spaces will provide exposure to nature and long range views of the Atlantic Ocean and city skyline. The developers and architect also plan direct access to emergency vehicles in the building’s design. “There will be many healthcare features incorporated into this outstanding facility,” says Rieber. Among them: • a covered building entrance with a generous drop-off/pickup area • parking for more than 500 vehicles integrated within the building structure for easy access • lobbies and corridors large enough to accommodate the patient population and medical equipment • elevators sized for stretchers and medical equipment • provisions for diagnostic imaging and treatment equipment • flexible space layout to accommodate various suite sizes (92330,079 square feet) • a prescription pharmacy, ambulatory surgical centers, areas for food establishments, etc.

Developer Mutchnik started his real estate career in his early 20s, owning one of the top apartment buildings in South Florida. In addition to residential real estate, he also ventured into commercial properties using his own moxie as guidance. Now, his real estate portfolio is valued at more than $300 million. For Icon Medical Tower, the developer fully owns the land, which represents 43 percent of the cost. The team expects to have the project totally covered by September.
