imply S Best The

Every year when we put together this issue, I read all

the amazing interviews with the health and fitness professionals we feature and think, “I need to make an appointment with him/her, stat!” And most times, I don’t. Because I get caught up in life, work, the next deadline— you can probably relate. But really, I’m short-changing myself. Because every one of us—no matter how young, strong, fit or healthy—can use something. It may be dental work, or even just a little whitening. Could be those dreaded sun (or age) spots have been haunting you every time you look in the mirror and no serum or cream on the planet seems to make them fade. Maybe that lower back pain that you keep attributing to your mattress is actually something more. And on and on it goes. Personally, I could probably make the rounds. My heel spurs (thanks, Insanity workout) have never gotten better, and wearing heels has become as dreaded

48

AventurA MAgAzine

a thought to me as suiting up in full armor to venture out in the heat. Those blasted age spots (at 52, you can’t get away with pretending you’ve just sprouted a crop of freckles) are not the easiest skin issue to conceal. And let’s not discuss the wonders that an endocrinologist could probably do. So the message is this: Read through the 29 pages of the “Best Self” section and you’re bound to discover someone or something you and your health could benefit from. When you do, get on the horn—or the appropriate website—and make your appointment. That’s why this issue exists: to help you, dear readers, be your best you—and that means inside and out. Enjoy the issue.

South Florida resident Sabrina Kurzman jumped on this cause upon finding out her son Ben had Crohn’s Disease. This summer, her other son, Drew, was also diagnosed with the condition. Not that she needed any added motivation to raise money for this cause, but Kurzman is fighting more ferociously than ever against the disease. This is her sixth year of hosting Comedy Night, a Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation (CCFA) fund raiser, which will be held October 21 at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino’s Improv in Hollywood. RIGHT: the iconic

neptune trident reminds the driver of the beauty in hand.

Maserati’s swagger starts with its very name. Go ahead, say it aloud: Maserahhhti. Yeah, you can’t even say it without sounding fabulous. Add the word “Quattroporte” and you’re speaking pure poetry—trochaic tetrameter, to be precise. Italian poetry, no less. Never mind that “Quattroporte” simply means “fourdoor.” It sounds marvelous rolling off the tongue. Turns out, that’s not the only fabulous thing about this issue’s featured automobile, the 2015 Maserati Quattroporte, which we recently sampled in its swiftest form, the GTS. First, it is quite the looker, with its bulging hood and confident, voluptuous body contours. Neptune’s trident is nestled within the protuberant, low-set grille that, combined with determined headlamps, evoke the sultry, open-mouth come-hither expression mastered by so many supermodels on the pages of this magazine. If Sofia Vergara were a car, she’d look like this.

ABOVE: Sleek lines and

sultry curves characterize the 2015 Maserati Quattroporte gtS. RIGHT: the v8 engine built by Ferrari comes alive on acceleration.

The Quattroporte GTS’ plus-sized dimensions and $144K price—no one said Sofia Vergara was a cheap date—place it in the same category as the Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG and Audi S8, yet from behind the wheel, the GTS feels rather less like a Teutonic limousine than an Italian sport sedan. It is luxurious enough to hold its head high in that heady company, but that’s not its primary mission. No, the Maser’s reason for existing is to be the sportiest luxury car on the market. And that it is. Put the pedal down, and the the 523-hp turbocharged V-8 turns it into a snarling, four-door Ferrari. Razor-sharp steering always zeroes in on the apex of a corner, and the body stays pan-flat when clipping it. Ride quality is always taut and never, ever floaty. The brakes on our tester proved a bit grabby, but when summoned to do so, they would stop the car with brain-jarring force. More than any of its competitors, the Quattroporte GTS is a car that gets more engaging and interesting the harder one drives it. Think of it as an instant mood adjustment machine, capable of widening your smile in direct proportion to the pressure you apply to the go pedal. 72

RIGHT: up front,

while handsome, appointments aren’t quite as luxe as one might expect for the price tag. BELOW: Ample room in the back seats adds comfort to elegance.

It’s painful to point out the flaws in a car as emotional as this, but alas, even a beauty like this can have some, and we’d be remiss not to ding the car for the occasional moments of cheapness, which come primarily in the form of prosaic window switches and climate controls sourced from the Fiat/ Chrysler parts bin. The leather is, well, as fabulous as any Italian car in the world, but the front seats it covers are wide and hard. While the aluminum trim piece surrounding the center screen is as premium as anything you’ll find in a Bentley, the screen graphics themselves are the same as the ones in your housekeeper’s Chrysler. A car this great (and this pricey) deserves its own trimmings. As with many Italian cars, the Quattroporte GTS is not perfect, but is an undeniably emotional creature, closer to feeling truly alive than anything in its segment of the market. And it has the capacity to make its driver feel alive, too. 74

Ariel Soffer, MD, FACC At Soffer HeAltH InStItute, A teAm of dedIcAted pHySIcIAnS And nurSeS provIde StAte-of-tHe-Art cArdIovASculAr And veIn cAre. What are signs and symptoms that indicate a vein problem that is more than just cosmetic? “The development of varicose veins is often the first sign of venous insufficiency, and this can progress to more serious consequences of chronic venous insufficiency including swelling, skin changes and ulceration. Many people do not know, however, that congestive heart failure and varicose veins are often mistaken for one another. While vein symptoms often manifest themselves cosmetically, they can be and often are part of a greater circulatory problem.”

What are some of the complications that can arise if we notice any of those and ignore them? “Left untreated, varicose veins will increase in size and number. Symptoms may worsen and can lead to leg swelling, chronic skin changes such as dermatitis and discoloration, and in severe cases, non-healing ulcerations. These problems make it difficult to sit or stand for long periods of time. Varicose veins may also indicate a critical blockage in deeper veins, a condition called deep vein thrombosis, or DVT, which can be life-threatening.”

Who is most at risk for developing varicose veins and related issues? “Women are more likely to suffer from varicose veins than men, though men make up about 20 percent of our patients. Varicose veins may develop during pregnancy or as the result of hormonal changes during menopause. Family history can put you at higher risk, and those suffering from obesity are more likely to have varicose veins.”

It is estimated that up to 40 percent of the world’s population suffers from varicose veins in various forms, and in about half of those cases, cosmetic vein issues are a sign of treatable underlying circulation issues. What are the right reasons to have cosmetic surgery and what are the wrong ones? “the most important reason not to have it is to please or impress a spouse or significant other or to be happier. Happiness and beauty start from within. Plastic surgery is a great way to restore factors beyond your control, such as changes in your body after pregnancy.”

What might readers not know about today’s newest methods? “though most people are considering less invasive procedures, in some situations larger procedures may be more beneficial. Fat grafting/ transfer has seen a tremendous increase in popularity for face, breast, buttocks and hands. For men, neograft hair transplant has eliminated the need for a large scar, making the recovery much easier.”

surgeon wants the public to know that pricing for procedures that seems too good to be true may also signify compromised patient safety. Like his peers, he reiterates that the most important factor in hiring a plastic surgeon is that they be board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgeons (ABPS). “People need to be more careful today than ever before because companies often market procedures—i.e., the doctor shows—that lack proper efficacy and scientific basis,” he says. “Just because it’s on TV doesn’t mean it works.” He also suggests checking with the Florida Board of Medicine to see if any complaints or disciplinary actions have been filed. At Aventura Aesthetic Center, his scope of services includes plastic surgery, hair restoration, injectable treatments and full esthetician services.

Frederick Kane, DMD, and Jeffrey Kane, DMD For decades, Kane dental has been treating patients in all phases oF general, cosmetic and restorative dentistry. What are some of the not-so-obvious reasons that it’s important to practice excellent dental care? “Poor oral health has been related to many systemic diseases including heart disease and diabetes. While dentistry in the united States tends to be a completely separate health care specialty, dental and oral health have holistic relationships with a person’s overall health. Obviously, the head and neck is the primary area where dentists provide treatment. the head and neck is a crucial pathway to the rest of the body.”

What other issues that can negatively affect dental health might readers be unaware of? “Acid reflux and side effects associated with the new weight loss procedures such as gastric bypass and lap band surgery are causing problems with people’s oral health. Dental decay and cavities are common side effects of these procedures. if you have had these types of procedures and suffer from gastric reflux, it’s important to discuss this with your physician as well as your dentist.”

If you were to warn against doing, eating or drinking three things in order to help maintain dental health or a beautiful smile, what would they be? “Whiter teeth and a beautiful, bright smile will enhance everyone’s appearance. unfortunately, most things that we eat or drink can slowly darken and age a patient’s smile. With advances in today’s dentistry, we are able to keep a person’s attractive smile with new whitening procedures such as deep bleaching, as well as improvements in porcelain veneers.”

Realistically, what is the chance of developing skin cancer? “One in five people will develop a skin cancer in his or her lifetime, and the rates for non-melanoma skin cancers have been increasing in people under the age of 40. Melanoma in Caucasian women younger than 40 has continued to increase, which may reflect the popularity of indoor tanning. Melanoma is the most common form of cancer for young adults 25-29 years old and the second-most common form of cancer for adolescents and young adults 15-29 years old. it’s important for teenagers and young adults to get yearly skin exams.”

What is the most important thing to remember for optimal skin health? “You want a strong antioxidant, like SkinCeuticals C e Ferulic, to prevent and protect against free radicals and environmental damage, combined with a physical sunblock such as elta MD’s uv Clear. And don’t forget to apply it to your neck, chest and hands.”

Is it possible to erase sun damage once it’s already been done? “The secret to erasing sun damage is to combine in-office procedures with a comprehensive, personalized skin-care regimen. Fraxel is still one of our favorite methods for removing brown spots and minimizing fine lines caused by environmental damage. it’s safe and extremely effective with only a few days of visible downtime.”

For those of us living in South Florida—or even those just visiting, any time of year—it’s important to recognize the importance of protecting and caring for our skin, from head to toe. “ideally, use a purely physical sunblock of SPF 30 or higher,” says Dr. Shani Studnik of Horwitz Dermatology in Aventura. “equally as important is remembering to reapply every two hours. try Colorescience Sunforgettables SPF 50 mineral brushes for easy reapplication throughout the day.” Another product he recommends: elta MD’s uv Daily, which is lightweight and hydrating without leaving a greasy feeling.

What is the chief complaint you hear from your patients? “Poor, uncorrected vision is one of the primary reasons people complain about their eyesight. not surprisingly, it is also the easiest and safest problem to fix. LASIK surgery is a fiveminute procedure that can maximize your vision and essentially get you out of glasses.”

What is important for patients to know about their eye health in this day and age? “We are in the era of digital eye strain. Most of us don’t take enough time away from a computer, our iPad, or our phones to give our eyes a rest. it’s important to get your eyes checked and make sure you talk to your physician about your digital lifestyle. taking a multivitamin and wearing sun protection are general strategies that will keep your eyes looking and feeling younger. there are some diseases, namely macular degeneration, where studies have proven that a certain combination of vitamins will significantly decrease progression of the disease.”

What are some of the most advanced or innovative techniques or procedures with regard to eye care today? “We believe in patient safety first and foremost. For that reason we perform most of our surgeries using the latest laser technology and have minimized the use of blades and excess anesthesia. Some of the physicians in our group have extensive experience using the newest technology platforms and were some of the first in South Florida to use these technologies.”

What are the red flags to look for when choosing a plastic surgeon? “Non-board certification and poor recommendations from clients.”

Diana Wohlstein, DMD Dental anD general health go hanDin-hanD at Wohlstein Dental group. What is it important for the public to know about how dental health can affect our general health? “Periodontal disease, or ‘gum disease,’ has been linked to our general state of well being. While a cause-and-effect relationship has not yet been proven, research has indicated that periodontal disease increases the risk of heart disease. there are some patients at risk for infective endocarditis that may require antibiotics prior to dental procedures.”

So what are the steps we should take to ensure that we’re doing all we can to optimize our dental health? “the optimum number of dental exams, cleanings or visits is determined by the dentist based on the needs and medical and dental conditions of the patient. Kids that have a high intake of soda should be checked often, and elderly who are forgetful and do not control dental plaque should come to the office for more frequent cleanings and be monitored closely for incipient decay formation. Patients who are considered to have periodontal disease come to the office every three months for periodontal maintenance procedure and pocket evaluation.”

What are some of the newest and most innovative tests patients should know about? “Salivary diagnostics and oral fluid diagnostic tests have already been developed to detect Hiv and substance abuse. rapid, chairside diagnostic tests and biosensor technologies are currently under development to evaluate oral fluids for disease detection, which will also facilitate improved access and health-care outcomes for patients. Some other new tests are Ct scans and cone bean X-rays, which produce a tridimensional image, view and interpretation of teeth, jaws, tumors and treatment planning of major implant cases.”

Who is the patient that should come to see you? “Patients with chronic spinal or joint pain and patients with chronic headaches are suitable candidates for referral to our practice. they can either be referred by another physician or they can contact our practice for evaluation.” What are some conditions or diseases that the public may not realize can be successfully addressed with neurological or spinal surgery? “Pain in the back of the head, the shoulder, or radiating down the arm may be secondary to a neck problem. Similarly, pain in the buttock, groin, hip or radiating down the leg may be secondary to a back problem. Pain in these regions can oftentimes be treated successfully by surgical interventions. For patients who are not surgical candidates or prefer not to undergo surgery, there may be less invasive treatments that can serve as alternatives to treat their pain.” What are some of the most advanced methods and techniques that you’re using today to make patients’ lives less stressful? “We offer radiofrequency ablation treatments to alleviate pain from facet joints, which is one of the most common sources of localized neck and back pain. We also treat pain from sciatica, even when the patient has had spine surgery in the past. We perform spinal cord stimulator treatments, which can relieve back and leg pain from spine conditions resistant to surgery and provide relief of pain in the extremities due to neurological conditions. We also perform regenerative therapy treatments, such as PrP (platelet-rich plasma) and stem cell injections, to help stimulate proper healing of injuries, tendons, muscles, joints, discs and ligaments.”

How long ago was Aventura Internal Medicine Concierge established and why did you start it? “Our concierge practice is not a franchise; it is our own concept. For our patients, it is an option, not mandatory. it was established as an enhancement to our practice in 2015.”

What are the costs of concierge medicine and for whom is it worth the expense? “Concierge medicine benefits are not covered by traditional medical insurance. the cost to our patients for our services is $1,500 per year.”

What range of services can one expect from concierge membership? “twenty-four-hour, 365-days-a-year text or phone access to us personally; guaranteed same-day appointments if requested; in-office blood drawing; unrushed time with your doctor; and cardiovascular tests that are not covered by your insurance.”

Give a specific example. “In our office, as part of our cardiovascular testing, we offer CiMt—Carotid intima-Media thickness, or atherosclerotic plaque testing. this is done by advanced ultrasound/echocardiographic technique. it allows us to determine the amount of plaque build-up that has occurred over the years, regardless of one’s cholesterol levels, which often do not correlate. thus, it is a preventative measure for heart attack and stroke.”

Anna Binder, MD EvEryonE has timEs whEn thEy bEcomE ovErwhElmEd or anxious from thE normal strEssors of lifE, and that’s what thE clinic of innovativE minds is hErE for. When people hear “psychiatrist,” they often think of mental issues, or for lack of a better term, “craziness.” In reality, who really benefits from seeing a psychiatrist or psychotherapist? “treatment from a mental health professional can be very helpful at times when, in the normal course of life, overwhelming emotions or concerns take hold. it is not unusual for people to become overwhelmed by feelings of sadness, grief, conflict or stress in the course of life. Mental health professionals routinely help people who are having difficulty coping with stressful life experiences, losses, or changes.”

So what are some signs it might be time to set up an appointment? “everything you feel is intense. You’ve suffered a trauma and you can’t seem to stop thinking about it. You have unexplained and recurrent headaches, stomach-aches or a rundown immune system. You’re using a substance to cope. You’re getting bad feedback at work. You feel disconnected from previously beloved activities. Your relationships are strained. Your friends have told you they’re concerned.”

Does working with a psychiatrist or psychotherapist usually need to be ongoing over years or do patients often come to a point where they can learn to manage their issues on their own? “therapy is a process. Change and healing do take time, but therapy is not a never-ending process; rather, it is focused on specific goals and follows a targeted plan of treatment. typically, as therapy progresses, clients begin to develop better ways of understanding and coping with the problems that brought them to therapy. this happens gradually as the client’s understanding develops and new and different coping mechanisms emerge. the psychiatrist will help the client see this progress and then they will decide together when target goals have been reached.”

“Psychiatrists are well aware of the concerns and anxieties that people may have

William A. Leone, MD, FACS The Leone CenTer for orThopediC Care aT hoLy Cross hospiTaL is ahead of The paCk when iT Comes To heLping paTienTs wiTh hip and knee issues. What are the differences between treating congenital or functional joint abnormalities and treating injuries to joints? “An accurate and specific understanding or diagnosis of a joint abnormality must be determined before an optimal treatment plan can be developed. A diagnosis is based on a careful history, a physical exam, and often imaging studies such as X-rays or an MRI scan. Once the diagnosis is established, a treatment plan can be developed. Usually treatment for non-congenital, as well as congenital, joint problems begins with conservative or non-operative measures such as therapy or activity modification, NSAIDs or other pain modifying medicines, modalities including ice or heat, or injections. If conservative treatment fails, surgery may be appropriate.”

What are some tips for maintaining joint health as we age? “Our joints feel better and will last longer if motion is maintained and the muscles that move them are kept strong and balanced. High-impact activities such as long-distance running or some team sports can cause trauma and potentially accelerate deterioration. Preexercise conditioning and warm-up is critical. I encourage my patients to ‘listen to and know their own bodies’ to help preserve their joints.”

How has your field changed over the years that you’ve been practicing? “I think what’s changed most dramatically during my 26-year career is how much faster patients get well and return to normal activities. I attribute this to better implants with vastly improved bearing surfaces, which results in greater longevity and durability; surgical techniques that continue to be refined, with an emphasis on minimally invasive surgery with gentler soft tissue handling and less trauma; and our new pain management protocols, which are designed to prevent and preempt pain through a multimodal approach. New technologies including the adoption of robotics, computers and sophisticated sensors have also fostered this trend of faster patient recovery and returning to full activity.”

musculoskeletal system, specifically hips and knees. “Many people complain of intermittent or continuous discomfort that does not improve with time. Holistic practitioners don’t only heal, but also teach a more balancing lifestyle, preventing diseases and negative manifestations. A person does not have to have a medical condition to receive acupuncture. “

What is the assessment process like for those coming to see you for the first time? “the initial consultation, which is always complimentary in our practice, lasts for about an hour. the practitioner and patient will usually sit down and go through an intensive intake. the practitioner will ask the patients questions that range from simple, such as location and measurement of pain, to very deep content, such as dreams, desires and habits. The practitioners will also measure the energy field of the patient, colors of body parts, body language and postures. the practitioner will ask you to show him or her your tongue; the shape, as well as the color and coating of the tongue, is important as a form of diagnosing.”

What does the range of treatments include? “i use many different schools of thought and techniques from different philosophies to help my patients go to their next level of healing for a more balanced, happy lifestyle. Silvia Rotemberg, MD RotembeRg Plastic suRgeRy’s mission is to helP men and women feel confident and comfoRtable again in theiR own skin.

What are the right reasons and the wrong reasons for getting plastic surgery? “the right reason: to improve your selfesteem and make you feel better about yourself. the wrong reasons: if you believe it will make you happier and solve your personal problems, or bring you a new boyfriend or girlfriend. Also, bad selfies— they are normally shot with a camera at arm’s length or pointed at a mirror; at this distance, every flaw is magnified.”

For you, what’s the most satisfying part of being a plastic surgeon? “the impact i make on a patient’s life, and the gratitude of my patients, either cosmetic or reconstructive. Also, the opportunity i have to go to Chile every year with the Chilean rotary Club to help less fortunate women have their breasts reconstructed after cancer.”

What is one of today’s newest and most innovative procedures? “Femilift, a new FDA-approved laser resurfacing for the vagina to make you feel confident everywhere. It’s a 30-minute, in-office procedure without anesthesia or surgery. it has little to no downtime and minimal side effects. You can resume your normal activities the same day and return to sexual activity in three days. For maximum effect, a series of three treatments scheduled four weeks apart is recommended.”

While plastic surgeon Dr. Silvia rotemberg emphasizes the importance of arming yourself with the knowledge about a physician’s board certification, the accreditation of the surgery center where the procedures are performed and what type of anesthesia you will receive (and from a board certified anesthesiologist), she also notes that as a patient, you should not ignore your instincts. “You need to feel comfortable, discuss your options at length, have multiple consultations and if he or she has a solution for you, do it that way. And if he or she doesn’t think a procedure is advisable, don’t insist.” Finally, she adds, “Most importantly, have realistic expectations.”

Alexander Levin, MD Universal Medical center specializes in non-sUrgical orthopedics, pain ManageMent and aesthetic treatMents.

What is the scope of services you provide in your practice? “there are two very important desires that most people have: 1) feeling better, and 2) looking younger. At universal Medical Center we address both. Pain management/non-surgical orthopedics helps people to get rid of or significantly diminish a variety of chronic pain conditions, most commonly lower back and neck pain, knee, hip and shoulder pain, tennis or golfer’s elbow, sports injuries, pain from car accidents, tendinitis, arthritis and multiple other pain conditions. Our cosmetic services are designed to make people look younger naturally, without surgery, utilizing the newest and most effective treatments, which, if selected properly, often produce amazing results and take 10 to 15 years off someone’s appearance.”

Explain how some of the treatments you offer can help those who may not even realize there is such a potentially simple solution. “i advise all the patients in pain who want either to avoid often addictive pain medications or are considering surgery of the spine or joints to have a second opinion in our Center. Frequently we can help a lot of those patients without heavy drugs or surgery.”

What are some of the latest and greatest treatments you offer, as well as any new techniques, methods, services you offer? “We offer multiple state-of-the art treatments for the above-mentioned conditions, including stem cell and PrP injections for regeneration of joints, muscles and ligaments. We have a variety of proprietary techniques for facial rejuvenation, non-surgical face and neck lifts, and multiple other procedures that make our clients look much younger and be more confident. But at the end of the day it is not a device or medication, it is a particular doctor’s experience that matters most. to help our cosmetic patients, we provide the first consultation free.”

related issues and cosmetic issues all in one place. Orangetheory Fitness Get the advantaGes of havinG a personal trainer at a fraction of the cost. What keeps so many people from even starting a fitness routine? “People are intimidated by thinking they are not fit enough, skinny enough, don’t have enough time…. At OtF, we offer a nonjudgmental atmosphere, welcoming people of all fitness levels.”

What are the top three components of a sound and effective fitness routine? “Cardio exercise is necessary three to five times a week. Besides its fat-burning advantages, it makes your heart strong, increases your lung capacity and helps reduce risk of heart attack, high cholesterol, high blood pressure and diabetes. Strength training protects your bone health and your muscle mass. it also boosts energy levels and improves your mood, and requires your body to burn more calories to maintain your muscle mass. And nutrition: if you’re unsure of your eating habits, consult a nutrition professional. You cannot out-train bad eating habits, and remember that eating too little is as bad as eating too much.”

What would you say to people who argue that they can’t exercise for one reason or another? “After consulting with a health professional, seek out programs that offer low-impact activity and options for those with physical limitations. As for the myriad of other excuses, they’re just that—excuses. After two weeks of consistency, a habit forms and from that point things seem to fit more easily into your schedule.”

Can’t force yourself to exercise on your own, but don’t want to drop a bundle

And they offer more than 50 classes a week—starting at 5:15 am and running to 8:30 pm—so that “I don’t have time” excuse no longer holds water.

Deahni Kipnis VigorMe well being center takes a holistic approach to health and well being. What made you decide to learn about and offer this service to South Florida? “i was introduced to holistic healing therapies in my early 20s with a pulsed electromagnetic device that helped with headaches. it relieved my headaches within minutes with no side effects and no use of toxic synthetic drugs. My world began opening up to new avenues of thinking that led me to an extensive education in holistic healing and theory that i continue to be passionate about today.”

Who is the ideal candidate for holistic medicine? “really, everyone. People who are not getting better with the traditional medical model, anyone interested in maintaining good health, who would like to cut down on medications they are taking, and who would like to try drug-free, non-toxic approaches to health challenges are all perfect candidates.”

What are some of the therapies or treatments? “Salt room therapy is amazing for stress and upper- and lower-respiratory issues like asthma, allergies, bronchitis, ear infections, etc. Our Pulse electroMagnetic therapy helps those challenged with circulation issues, chronic pain and chronic illness, and boosts the immune system. electro-Lymphatic Drainage is ten times more effective than manual lymphatic massage and can help with arthritis, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia and migraines, to name a few.”

Stephen Channey, MD, FACOG Knowing all you can about bioidentical Hormone replacement tHerapy can maKe all tHe difference in your HealtH.

Describe Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy and how it differs from other hormone replacement therapies. “BHrt refers to hormones that are manufactured to have the exact molecular structure as those found in the human body. natural hormones are reconstructed from a cholesterolring precursor found in soy or yam. Synthetic hormones are designed by pharmaceutical companies to be radically different in molecular structure from those found in the human body with the intent of obtaining exclusive patent rights. random controlled trials have implicated only synthetic hormones as potentially harmful to humans, never natural.”

Who is the ideal candidate for bioidentical hormone replacement? “Red flags include a new onset of weight gain, fatigue, and physical or emotional decline or abnormal medical labs, such as elevated cholesterol, triglycerides, or hemoglobin A1c, that were previously normal. the earlier the aforementioned red flags are addressed by optimizing hormone levels, the better the sustainment of disease prevention.”

What sort of changes or improvements can patients expect after BHRT? “An individually tailored hormone replacement program stimulates optimal functioning of skin, teeth, bone, muscle, cardiovascular system, central nervous system and immune system. the result for most people is a noticeable and sustained improvement in energy, mental acuity, physical ability, libido, muscle and bone strength, mood, stamina and immunity. Patients frequently report profound reversal of fatigue, loss of fat, and eradications of symptoms of menopause such as insomnia, hot flashes, anxiety, abnormal uterine bleeding and vaginal atrophy.”

With all that’s been written and discussed about hormone replacement therapy lately, it’s crucial to educate yourself on the subject before considering it. And Dr. Stephen Channey is here to do just that. While his original training and board certification are as an OB/GYN, he has been trained in and studying age management for the past three years and, most notably, certified in ABHRT (advanced bioidentical hormone replacement therapy), which includes treatment of male patients as well as women.

Kenneth N. Woliner, MD, ABFM, ABOIM Holistic Family medicine seeks to discover and remedy tHe underlying causes oF illness ratHer tHan cover up tHe symptoms witH medications.

Who is the ideal candidate for holistic medicine? “Anyone who is interested in actually fixing the cause of their medical problems, rather than merely attempting to cover up symptoms, is the ideal candidate for holistic medicine. Having a doctor who knows about other things such as diet, exercise and vitamins, in addition to prescription drugs, opens up options for patients who have been stuck with expensive drugs and their side effects.”

What piqued your interest in this practice and in bringing it to South Floridians?

What is different about holistic medicine from traditional medicine? “Holistic medicine requires the assessment of the whole person, body, mind and spirit, in the quest for optimal health and wellness. While traditional allopathic medicine often relies on looking at individual symptoms and covering up those symptoms with prescription drugs, a holistic approach looks for functional imbalances and seeks to treat the underlying causes of illness.”

“even back in medical school, i saw inconsistencies in the way medicine was practiced. Overweight patients were told they should ‘try diet and exercise,’ but were never given specific recommendations of what diet changes or exercises to do. Fibromyalgia patients were given medications to cover up their pain, without any idea of how to fix the dysfunction that was causing it to begin with. So i looked deeper by going to the library, attending conferences across the country and employing therapies mainstream doctors didn’t even consider. it was so rewarding to get the hopeless patients better that i felt compelled to start my own practice here in South Florida near my extended family.”

Dr. Kenneth Woliner has always believed in a strong relationship between diet

and wellness, even majoring in nutrition while at Cornell University. He treats many types of “difficult to treat” conditions. “Some thyroid conditions—Hashimoto’s, Central Hypothyroidism, and others—respond to thyroid hormones despite lab tests ‘in range.’ Chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia respond quite well to a functional medicine approach, including the use of intravenous (iv) vitamin infusions. Hair loss often responds to iron infusions.” Dr. Woliner can and does prescribe medications, but more often than not, recommendations about behavior changes, diet, exercise and vitamins are emphasized.

Cynthia Golomb, MD Dermatology Boutique specializes in general anD cosmetic Dermatology anD offers something extra: Dermatopathology.

What are some procedures that can help reverse the signs of aging or the visible effects of sun damage? “ultherapy is non-invasive and jump-starts your body’s own production of collagen in the deep layers of your skin. Injectable dermal fillers also spur your body to produce collagen, so they have lasting benefits after the filler dissipates. As for tried and true, you can’t beat laser treatments for improving the appearance of your skin. they force your skin to turn up collagen production, and they vary from gentle to invasive. the Clear+Brilliant laser is my choice for all skin types to smooth skin, decrease pore size and improve pigment abnormalities. it really is a lunchtime procedure—you can put on makeup after the treatment and go back to work, as long as you don’t work outside in the sun.” What are some of the products and practices you as a dermatologist can’t live without? “Well, patience is something you can add to your skin-care routine. Often, patients give up on skin-care products before they’ve had a chance to work. Stick to it for at least six to eight weeks. retinoids are products i can’t live without because they’re tried-and-true wrinkle fighters. But don’t use too many products at once, especially those with active ingredients that have similar effects, such as retinoids and beta or alpha hydroxyl acids, which exfoliate.” Any simple lifestyle changes to recommend that affect skin? “A nutritious diet with antioxidants from fruits and vegetables helps your body build collagen. reduce inflammation by avoiding sugar and starch. Get plenty of sleep so your body can recharge. relax and de-stress—it will show on your face!”

“As many of my patients know, I am board certified in both dermatology and dermatopathology,” explains Dr. Cynthia golomb. “A dermatopathologist diagnoses diseases of the skin, hair and nails by looking at samples under a microscope.” She has done a number of studies both domestically and internationally, including on a skin substitute for non-healing wounds, spent time with an indigenous population in Panama treating common skin conditions, and she has been involved in a number of studies evaluating results on anti-aging treatments. Most recently, Dr. golomb is studying confocal microscopy, a technique that produces images similar to ultrasound but using light instead of sound.

Marco Contreras, DDS, PA CosmetiC dentistry is the foCus in this full-sCope dental praCtiCe, from porCelain veneers to implants, Crowns and bridges.

What about cosmetic advancements and techniques? “Cosmetic dentistry’s technological advancements in natural-looking, tooth-colored dental materials make today’s cosmetic dental treatments more durable and predictable than in years past. Additionally, dentists are now using more conservative cosmetic dentistry techniques to preserve as much of your natural tooth structure as possible. We can also use technologies such as lasers to perform some procedures necessary for cosmetic treatments in their own offices, which makes cosmetic procedures such as smile makeovers more comfortable and convenient for patients and helps reduce recovery time.”

How often should I visit my dentist to ensure that I’m taking the best care possible of my teeth and mouth? “Dental and health organizations decided there was a need to set standards for preventive dentistry. they said people should go to the dentist twice a year for checkups and cleaning, but scheduling dental visits should be based upon each person’s oral hygiene, habits and medical condition.”

What are some tests we need that we might not know about? “Oral cancer screening is one of the most important extra tests you can have. the statistics on this form of cancer remain discouraging despite advances against cancer in recent decades—more than 60 percent are diagnosed in the late stages.”

“taking good care of your mouth—your teeth and gums—does more than help ensure you have a bright, white smile,” says Dr. Marco Contreras. “A healthy mouth and a healthy body go hand in hand.” to elaborate, Dr. Contreras points out that good oral hygiene and oral health can reduce the risk of serious disease and perhaps even preserve your memory as you enter your golden years. “the phrase ‘healthy mouth, healthy you’ really is true,” he adds.

Andrew Forrest, DMD, MS Premier Dental GrouP offers the latest anD most innovative Dental health services. If you were to warn against doing, eating or drinking different things in order to maintain dental health or a beautiful smile, what would those things be? “ice is for chilling, not chewing—chewing on hard substances can leave your teeth vulnerable to a dental emergency. Also, watch your citrus intake, because acidic foods can erode enamel and make teeth more susceptible to decay over time. Swap out soda with water, because plaque bacteria uses the sugar to produce acids that attack your teeth’s enamel. And be careful of sports drinks—they sound healthy, but sugar is often the top ingredient on the list.”

What is an exciting innovation with regard to orthodontics that your practice is offering patients? “the orthodontic department at Premier Dental group utilizes Premier Bracket Placement Solutions, a patented suite of computer-aided bracket placement services. through cutting-edge 3-D model printing technology, bonding trays are made with unrivaled fit and bracket position accuracy. Outcomes are more predictable and consistent, adjustments are minimized or eliminated, and the movement of teeth is much quicker, more precise and more accurate.”

What’s new with regard to detecting decay and cavities? “We have acquired a new high-tech tool, the DiAgnOdent Class 1 laser, that uncovers hidden decay by emitting safe, painless pulses of light through the tooth structure at 655nm wavelength. it is more sensitive than traditional diagnostic methods and is an outstanding adjunct to oral examination. Premier Dental group includes this service at no additional fee in your regular checkup after your cleaning appointment.”

Gravity Studio This bouTique fiTness sTudio offers small-group funcTional fiTness classes led by a personal Trainer. What makes your classes different from all the others out there, and more appealing to those who find it difficult to incorporate fitness into their daily routines? “total gym gtS machines that we use for our classes are approved by rehabilitation and physical therapy specialists. they are effective and safe for all ages and skill levels. Deconditioned people as well as athletes can be in the same group, choosing their own incline level and range of motion on every exercise. Our classes can really accommodate all needs, forms and shapes.”

What do you say to those who are constantly putting off getting in shape? “Fitness is easier than you think. it should be a routine—put it on your schedule as a priority. You can like it or not, but you have to exercise. the American Heart Association recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity per week and moderate- to high-intensity muscle-strengthening activity at least two days per week for additional health benefits. That’s only 3.5 hours a week, or 14 hours a month. We have 720 hours in a month, so that’s only 1.9 percent of your time. Is your health worth it?”

What would you say to people who say they can’t exercise because of past injuries, a stiff back or other such issues? “We have several clients that thought they could never be in a group fitness class again because of a past injury and fear of not knowing how to exercise. With our small groups and highly certified personal trainers, they can modify and pay close attention to things like form to put the individual at ease.”

“Everyone knows how important it is to get fit, but it’s so difficult to find the time to exercise,

isn’t it?” asks owner Anastasia Yusina, who is also the founder of Orange Fitness and City Fitness brands. “We all have the same excuses: traffic, kids, work. Gravity allows you to reach your fitness goals in 50 minutes, in a small group, with a personal trainer, and build strength, endurance, mobility and stability.” the studio, with locations in Pembroke Pines and Aventura, currently offers four formats that change every 12 weeks to “shock” your body and keep progress moving forward toward your fitness goals.

Rian Maercks, MD, PA The Maercks InsTITuTe addresses every faceT of plasTIc and cosMeTIc surgery usIng TechnIques TaIlored To each IndIvIdual paTIenT’s needs. It can be very confusing to research procedures on the Internet. What advice would you give when it comes to doing this?

What factors should prospective patients consider when deciding whether to have a procedure? “Cosmetic surgery is a very personal decision and what’s right for one patient can be wrong for another. i take the time to understand patients’ needs, desires and motivations. importantly, the decision to have cosmetic surgery should come from a positive and grounded perspective. times of stress, loss and anxiety are not the best to have a cosmetic intervention.”

“the abundance of information both factual and false on the internet makes it very difficult for patients to choose a procedure and surgeon. My best advice is to find a surgeon that the patient feels comfortable with. When patients research my practice they will find that i handle aesthetic concerns in a very unique manner. i avoid the common, plasticized look and i’m known for results that don’t look surgical. i am not the plastic surgeon for everyone, but for those looking for a subtle balance that appears made by nature, I am the right fit.”

What aspect of your profession do you find the most rewarding? “Seeing my patients is one of the greatest joys in my life. i have the great honor of seeing them transform not only physically, but also see newfound confidence, self-connection and growth. My patients are a special sort of extended family to me and they are what make my career absolutely incredible.”

“There’s an old saying in my field: ‘there’s nothing new in plastic surgery,’” says Dr. rian Maercks.

“What this means is that everything is a variation on a theme, and procedures tend to come in and out of vogue. the reality is that it is not necessarily the exact technique that is used, but the application, customization and tailoring of the technique to the patient.” He adds that often when a practice has a catchy title that doesn’t include the surgeon’s name, it signifies more of a business than a doctor’s practice. “In general, these centers will have a ‘fast food’ type approach and be more affordable, but in my opinion should be avoided. Also, beware when the ‘newest technology’ is the selling point. Much more important than the tool in the hand is the hand that the tool is in.”

Model Behavior Red-hot supermodel Karolina Kurkova has discovered a healthy outdoor lifestyle on Miami Beach—and she’s loving it.

pregnant with her second child, is fortunate to have it all. Standing 5 feet 11 inches tall, the blonde-haired, green-eyed fashion model, former Victoria’s Secret Angel and budding businesswoman has learned to balance her busy life on Fisher Island. After giving birth to son Tobin Jack Drury six years ago, she talked about the transition from being a model and the wife of actor/ film producer Archie Drury to motherhood. “I feel very different,” Kurkova, 31, told Access Hollywood. “After having a baby, things change. Something inside of you switches and you become this powerful mama who can deal with anything and do everything. I never sit down. I’m always running around...I take care of the house, I cook, I work and I walk the runway.”

With an estimated net worth of $10 million, Kurkova is indeed a busy woman. She has walked hundreds of runways around the world modeling fashions from top designers like Valentino, Yves Saint Laurent, Chanel, Carolina Herrera, Gucci, Givenchy, Dolce & Gabbana, Stella McCartney, Marc Jacobs, Louis Vuitton, Versace and Vera Wang. She’s been the face of top fashion advertising campaigns and appeared on the cover of nearly 100 magazines, from Vogue (more than 25 times) to Elle to Esquire, and in 2004 landed on People magazine’s “Most Beautiful” list. In 2008, E! voted Kurkova the sexiest girl in the world. This girl really does have it all: Besides being giving and beautiful, glamorous and well dressed (she looks smashing in

her new Giuseppe Zanotti gold leather gladiator sandals, which she posted on her Instagram), Kurkova is also fun-loving, friendly, charming and polite. The famous fashion photographer Mario Testino described her as a model that “could fit into any moment.” And she does, from fashion shows to red-carpet events; in fact, Kurkova is a frequent TV talk show guest and red carpet presence. During a fashion event in Miami Beach last year where she was a celebrity guest, Kurkova told this writer that living on Fisher Island—she also keeps an apartment in New York—has opened up a whole new world for her. “Being able to spend so much time outdoors, swimming, playing sports, staying fit and enjoying the sunshine is the way I want to live and

eing able to spend so much time outdoors, swimming, playing sports, staying fit and enjoying the sunshine is the way I want to live and raise my kids.”

raise my kids,” says Kurkova, whose son is learning to speak Spanish. “I grew up in a sports-oriented family and believe being active is very important for my children. I am happy in Miami.” She is gratified to be able to give her family a healthy outdoor lifestyle. And with another child on the way, her life as a mother of two will be easier in Florida than New York despite her constant travel demands. The daughter of Josef Kurka, who was a star basketball player in the Czech Republic—and from whom she inherited her height—and a Slovak mother who was a bank manager, Kurkova was born in the fairytale town of Decin in the Czech Republic. The postcard-perfect city is located in the valley on both banks of the Elbe River, where time appears to stand still. Growing up, she was taller than the other girls and has said that she often felt out of place. But things changed after a friend sent pictures of her to a modeling agency in Prague. By age 15, she had secured a runway appearance and some modeling jobs. Less than a year later, she traveled to Milan and signed a contract with Miuccia Prada for the designer’s sister label, Miu Miu. Encouraged and ambitious, Kurkova moved to New York in 1999 to broaden her stage. Two years later, she became the youngest model to appear on the cover of Vogue. That accomplishment, on top of her numerous runway appearances, ad campaigns, TV gigs and high-profile events, launched what has turned into a stellar career. Ten years after relocating to America, she and Drury, an ex-Marine who served in the first Persian Gulf War before attending University of California Berkeley, married; their son was born the same year. Kurkova talked to the media about her first pregnancy, especially concerning diet and workouts. She said that she didn’t gain much weight because she stayed very active throughout the pregnancy, practicing Pilates, light weight training, walking and traveling. On eating healthy before the baby was born, she told W she was taking good supplements and vitamins, drinking green juices and making sure she was putting the best of everything into her body. “I didn’t want much junk,” she said. “And I was lucky I didn’t crave it, either. But obviously you want to try and give

yourself more natural foods and fruits, good vitamins, fish oils, fiber…. Lots of fiber when you are pregnant!” In general, Kurkova thrives on a healthy diet, combining juicing with small meals. She and her family drink green fruit juices with the meals she cooks when her schedule allows. They eat light, tasty and gluten-free. “We don’t eat anything white or processed and try to support small farms and local places that grow their own things,” she’s said. On a typical day, Kurkova eats a series of small meals and snacks. For breakfast, it’s a green juice upon arising. A couple of hours later, she has hard-boiled eggs. Two or three hours after that, she snacks on a handful of raw walnuts, which are filled with Vitamin E and omega-3 fatty acids, or almonds. She also makes her own almond milk and raw chocolate drink. For lunch, she likes grilled fish, a salad and vegetables, followed by a later afternoon green juice. And dinner at home can be healthy grains like quinoa or brown rice with vegetables, chicken or fish. Since she is so disciplined as a rule, she will occasionally indulge in dark chocolate when she desires and it does no harm. It also helps that Kurkova loves yoga and going to the gym, often using a trainer for a mix of strength training and cardio, which can include dancing. To keep her skin smooth and supple, she told New York Magazine’s “The Cut” that she uses only organic, pure and natural products. ”Whatever you put on your skin gets absorbed into your body,” she said. “I’m already wearing makeup, which is not ideal all the time. It’s not pure, it’s not oils, it’s not natural. So for my skin, at least, I try to use everything that’s natural.” And natural is a good way to describe this successful model and serious businesswoman. In recent weeks as an expectant mom, she has looked radiant, healthy and happy when stepping out with Drury and Tobin. She is over the moon about having a husband who is her “best friend” and also about giving her son a sibling. With all of her hard work and international appearances in the ephemeral fashionmodeling business, she summed up how well raised and firmly grounded she is via a recent social media post: “Family is a gift that lasts forever.”

¥ FITNESS REGIMEN:

Since moving to Miami, i’ve become totally hooked on Barry’s Bootcamp, which i go to 4 to 5 mornings a week. the trainers there have a great way of pushing you to be the best you can be, but with a beautiful energy. When i’m not obsessing over Barry’s, i also run and walk on the beach. Which feels like heaven.

¥ FRINGE BENEFITS:

Definitely energy and generally just feeling really good and strong within my body. it’s all connected for me: working out, eating well, getting to bed early etc. i’m no angel, but when you get into a routine of looking after yourself, life just feels better because everything is sharper.

¥ MOTIVATION SECRETS:

i think about how much better i’ll feel after the hour-long work out than an extra hour in bed. i’ve never once in my life felt worse after working out than before.

¥ THE CHEAT THAT’S WORTH IT:

i don’t really think of things as cheat items. i’m really passionate about food and have a very healthy relationship with it. So i’ll happily eat really good quality chocolate or a really excellent pizza with zero guilt. Same goes for alcohol.

¥ FITNESS REGIMEN:

the key for me starts with having appointments for my workout times. Simply intending to work out just doesn’t work for me, since there are so many other things that get in the way from day to day. When at my best, I have scheduled workout sessions four times a week and get them done first thing in the morning.

¥ FRINGE BENEFITS:

Working out seems to serve as an energy booster for me. regardless of how tired I might be leading into a workout or how exhausted I feel once I get out of a workout, I always feel like an energized version of my natural self when I am consistently working out. My posture feels different, I feel more alert and I tend to get better sleep.

¥ MOTIVATION SECRETS:

I once heard a trainer say that one hour of pain followed by 23 hours of feeling better about yourself is better than slacking off for one hour and then having 23 hours of guilt. I try to remind myself of that when all else fails.

¥ NUTRITION & DIET:

this is the one area that can be challenging, since having a busy schedule can coincide with eating out quite a bit. I try to log every meal into a calorie-counting app. this helps me truly realize the impact of what I am putting in my body. I have found that when I am at my best, I will pre-arrange my meals and restaurants based on the calorie count I am trying to achieve. Anticipating what or where you might have dinner should influence what you eat for lunch.

¥ THE CHEAT THAT’S WORTH IT: At this point I am not sure I would tolerate it, but nothing is better than a large bowl of ice cream with sweetened condensed milk.

¥ DIET & EXERCISE MOTTO:

If you are going to work hard and play hard, make sure you put the right fuel in your system.

¥ FRINGE BENEFITS:

Most important to me is that exercising improves my mental acuity. Staying in good shape physically helps me stay sharp mentally. Exercising each morning gives me a time in the day when I can have solitude with my own thoughts and surroundings.

¥ MOTIVATION SECRETS:

When this happens, if it’s a really tough morning, I’ll compromise on the distance and my pace.

fter missing the remainder of the NBA season due to blood clots found on his lung in February, Christopher Wesson Bosh is excited to be back on the basketball court. Although he gained back his strength slowly after laying low for a couple of months, these days he’s feeling fine. “I had never before done nothing, so I came back slowly after I recovered,” says Bosh, 31. “When I first started walking again, I used a cane. I would go 100 feet. Then I gradually gained more and more strength.” The announcement that Bosh was out for the rest of the season, which included the playoffs, was a crushing

160

AventurA MAgAzine

blow to the Miami Heat and to all of the player’s fans last season. But foremost on everyone’s mind was his safe recovery from a serious condition with basketball playing second string. “That’s the most important thing, the health of your players,” Heat coach Erik Spoelstra told reporters at the time. Bosh found that he had trouble breathing during a few games in February and also complained of pain. Diagnosed with blood clots, specifically pulmonary embolism, he suffered a condition that occurs when a clot breaks off in another part of the body and travels through the heart, enters the lungs and lodges in one of the smaller blood vessels. “When I

was sick, I had pain and had to deal with getting better after surgery and being in the hospital,” says Bosh. Since his condition was treated with blood thinners, which increase the risk of internal bleeding, sports such as basketball had to be tabled until his body was completely void of blood clots. He was glad when that time came last spring and he could go back to work. “I got back in the swing, and I am now feeling great and confident,” says Bosh, who spent the summer traveling and enjoying time in Los Angeles with his family. (He is married to Adrienne Bosh and has three children, aged 6, 3 and 1.) Standing 6 feet 11 inches tall and

weighing 235 pounds, Bosh, now playing center, is in his 12th year as a pro. Fast, athletic and a master ball handler, his on-court reputation is quiet and humble, eager to pass the ball to a teammate who might be in a better position to score. He is lauded for his proficiency of driving to the basket and scoring at the free-throw line, and his mid-range jump shot—one of his best maneuvers—has helped his career soar over the past few years. Smart, articulate, alert, perceptive and giving, Bosh is an invaluable asset for the Heat. He is a polished ambassador for the brand and a man who truly cares about others.   “Chris is an extraordinary gentleman,” Pat Riley, president of the Heat organization, said shortly after Bosh joined the team in 2010. “He has been with the Heat for only a few months but has already hit the ground running as a great player and good citizen.” Bosh quickly and easily proved his worth from the beginning. As a 10-time All-Star and two-time NBA Champ (2012, 2013) with the Heat, Riley and other team honchos

didn’t want to lose him when his contract was up. So they signed him to a whopping five-year, $118,705,300 deal last July. For the upcoming 2015-16 season, Bosh will earn a base salary of $22,192,730. Bosh has loved it here from the start of his career here, and settled in quickly. “Miami is such a great and welcoming city,” he said at the time. “I like Miami’s architecture with its artsy appeal, and I am amazed at the food and weather. Plus, the scene as an international cultural melting pot is awesome. Everything is here.” Despite his busy schedule of games, events, appearances, and now, designing ties, his workouts have always taken up a great deal of his day. In fact, his exercise regimen then was much the same as it is now, post illness. Bosh rises at 8:30 am, has breakfast at 9 am, then arrives at the court between 10 and 10:30 am. He lifts weights to prevent injury and has increased the strength by about 50-70 pounds from earlier years. And he is really into core training. “I do core training for my lower body,” he says,

bosh in his element.

OPPOSITE:

“especially the hips and abdomen.” Weighted core training is important for Bosh on many levels. According to Todd Bumgardner, co-founder of Beyond Strength Performance, there is an inner core of muscles that engage first during movement or breathing to protect the spine, and an outer core that is responsible for stabilizing and protecting the spine but has more defined movement functions. There are five different components of core training that Bosh is after to protect himself from injury and to stay in great shape: flexibility, motor control, endurance, stability and strength. In addition, he hits the track once or twice a week running to continuously build up his lungs. He also runs on the beach, and, of course, shoots hoops. His diet is well balanced, and he is back to eating more since his release from the hospital and subsequent recovery. He favors chicken, fish and steak, stays hydrated by drinking plenty of water, and consumes vegetables as often as possible. He spends family time with the children around his house, playing with them in their bedrooms or on the couch. When he and Adrienne go out on the town, they enjoy exploring new places. “Miami has so many pockets; we like to find new things, new places to go where we haven’t been,” says Bosh. “And we both believe in giving back to the community.” For Thanksgiving, there are plans to send care packages to America’s soldiers as he has done in the past. The charity he founded, Team Tomorrow, Inc., is dedicated to supporting organizations that promote the uplifting of children, families and the community. For the past few years, it has sponsored projects and community-based events by partnering with donors, business leaders, outreach programs, athletes, celebrities and other non-profits. But this season, Bosh is the one who is thankful. He has his health, his family, his charity work and an amazing career that has made him a household name. “I’m looking forward to putting my passion back on court,” says Bosh. “We are a championship caliber team with a lot of belief in our skills. I am excited about getting back to basketball.” So are his Miami fans.

L’Auberge Del Mar San DiegO

The Resort

Connect with Nature

Spa

Food for the Soul

In the heart of San Diego’s idyllic seaside village of Del Mar, L’Auberge Del Mar is both a fixture of the community and a desirable destination for visitors. With a stairway leading from the resort’s pool directly to the beach, the adjacent Powerhouse Park and outdoor Del Mar Shopping Plaza across the street, all of Del Mar’s attractions are within a quick walk. The boutique property with 121 guest rooms and two tennis courts evokes a private beach estate where classical décor meets California seaside ease.

The waves of SoCal are calling and they’re right outside your window at L’Auberge Del Mar, where you can take a two-hour surf lesson with their partner, Fulcrum Surf School. They’ll teach you the art of popping up and paddling in, so that you’ll be riding those waves in no time. Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve borders Del Mar to the south, where you can hike through the trails and canyons down to secluded Black’s Beach, one of the most challenging (and picturesque) surf breaks in Southern California.

The surf shack-themed spa at L’Auberge is situated inside an intimate cottage with oceaninspired treatments and herbal steam rooms. Soothe your sunand salt-exposed skin with the Ocean Body Indulgence treatment, which entails exfoliation with nourishing ocean minerals, a detoxifying marine-based body wrap to draw out impurities and, finally, a hydrating massage.

While the sunset views at the casual Coastline Café are hard to resist, dinner at L’Auberge’s signature restaurant, Kitchen 1540, is a must. The chic dining room boasts a backyard patio with copious teak tables and a vertical, hydroponic garden with herbs and flowers used in the dishes. Executive chef Brandon Fortune creates seasonal menus highlighting fresh fish from near and far (barramundi, Arctic char, sturgeon) and modern takes on comfort food, like fried green tomatoes with California goat cheese, apples and compressed jicama. If the housemade peanut butter ice cream is on the dessert menu when you visit, do yourself a favor and order the mousse-like, creamy confection. 1540 Camino Del Mar, Del Mar; 858.259.1515; laubergedelmar.com. Terranea LOs AngeLes

The Resort

Spa & Wellness

Food for the Soul

Perched on the Rancho Palos Verdes peninsula overlooking the South Bay, Terranea is a luxurious escape from Los Angeles city life. The sprawling property encompasses 102 acres with panoramic Pacific Ocean views and 582 Mediterraneanstyle abodes, ranging from guestrooms to freestanding villas. The resort feels like a community unto itself, dedicated to the easy, breezy California good life, boasting both a 9-hole golf course and multiple swimming pools.

Start your days with a seaside hike along the onsite nature trail that winds up and down the rugged bluffs covered in sagebrush, fennel and wild lemongrass, toward Point Vicente Lighthouse. Along the way, keep your eyes peeled for rabbits, butterflies and coastal birds, including the resort’s resident falcon. Opt for a guided sea kayak tour along the rocky shore where, on a clear day, Catalina Island is visible on the horizon 20 miles offshore. Here, the deep green-blue Pacific is home to sea lions, harbor seals and kelp beds, as well as California’s state marine fish, the bright orange garibaldi damselfish. You might get lucky and spot a pod of dolphins, too.

Make time for one of the sunrise or sunset yoga or cycling classes in the seaside fitness studios. Then, give your skin some pampering at the 50,000-square-foot spa with their new Radiant Results Facial utilizing the Aroma Radiance Lift Machine, which employs gentle micro-currents through two metal wands improving the face’s muscle tone while also plumping, hydrating, deep cleaning and healing the skin. Used with their all-natural Rose Infinity skin-care line, the result is radiant, event-ready skin with a visible lift that lasts for days.

Of the resort’s eight restaurants, Mar’sel is Terranea’s crown jewel for both its hyperfresh, seafood-forward menu and stunning al fresco patio ocean views. Under the tutelage of French Basque-born executive chef Bernard Ibarra, every dish is prepared with a deft touch and bright ingredients cultivated from his onsite herb garden and sourced locally. Think citrus honey essence, carrot curry purée, heirloom tomatoes, pepitas, cauliflower mousse and pea tendrils. Local fish, like swordfish, sockeye salmon and Pacific halibut, shine alongside heartier proteins such as grass-fed rack of lamb and prime bone-in ribeye. With an impressive menu of California and French wines, their sommelier can guide you toward the perfect pairing. 100 Terranea Way, Rancho Palos Verdes; 310.265.2800; terranea.com. To celebrate its 25th anniversary as a premier Northern California ski destination this year, the Resort at Squaw Creek completed a $7 million update to its 405 guestrooms. The modern glass exteriors are in stark contrast to the warm and cozy lodge-like interiors, with stunning views of the rolling Sierra Nevada Mountains blanketed in evergreens and dotted with goldenrod and purple lupine wildflowers. Rooms are spacious, with Fireplace Suites featuring a separate bedroom, living room and kitchenette in one-, two- and threebedroom floor plans, catering to families and extended-stay accommodations.

With ski-in/ski-out access to Squaw Valley and Lake Tahoe a 10-minute drive away, the Resort at Squaw Creek offers ample opportunity for outdoor activities year-round. Discover the surprisingly Caribbean blue waters and incredible clarity of Lake Tahoe on a guided stand-up paddleboard tour with Tahoe City Kayaks and learn about the colorful history of the nearly 200-square-mile-wide lake that plunges to depths of over 1,600 feet.

After an arduous day carving the slopes or making waves in the lake, soothe your tired muscles at the spa with a deep tissue massage. Unwind in the sauna and steam room before and after your treatment for the ultimate in relaxation and rejuvenation.

The dining room at Six Peaks Grille boasts floor-to-ceiling picture windows and a lovely outdoor patio overlooking the mountains for a cozy, upscale dinner. Executive chef Jason Friendly creates both vegetarian options like quinoa and amaranth with local vegetables and pine nuts, as well as heartier fare like surf and turf with filet mignon and Maine lobster on the seasonally changing menu. Peruse the artisanal cocktail menu for an inspired aperitif created by the resort’s in-house mixologist.

1 1) Hemingway at Coya You don’t have to head to the Keys to get a little taste of Hemingway, thanks to the generous mixologists at Coya. Just five simple ingredients, and you’re there. INGREDIENTS: ½ oz. pineapple–infused Macchu Pisco 1½ oz. Blackwell rum ½ oz. Luxardo Maraschino Liqueur 1¾ oz. fresh grapefruit juice ½ oz. fresh lime juice DIRECTIONS: Shake everything together in a cocktail shaker, then double strain into a coupe glass. 2) Illegalito Created by Tanzy’s master mixologist and advanced sommelier, Adam Seger, this twist on their (practically) official libation is so good it oughta be against the law. INGREDIENTS: ½ lime, quartered 12 mint leaves 3 2-inch-square chunks of pineapple 1 oz. each coconut milk and passion fruit purée 1¾ oz. Cachaça Brazilian rum DIRECTIONS: Muddle above (smash with a muddler or blunt end of a rolling pin) until juicy and aromatic. Fill glass with ice, top with sparkling water and pour back and forth into an empty pint glass or tumbler to mix. Garnish with a skin-on pineapple wedge and fresh mint.

3) Guarapo, Orange & Honey Sferifications Bubble, bubble, toil and trouble—this one is almost like a science project, but definitely worth the time and effort. INGREDIENTS: 1 part sugarcane 1 part orange liqueur ½ part lemon juice 1 part Colombian rum

FOR ThE SphERES: Honey Colombian rum Agar-agar vegetable oil

DIRECTIONS: Grind the sugarcane and mix it with the rest of the drink ingredients. To make the spheres, mix the honey with rum and agar-agar. Heat it to boiling point and leave it simmering for 3 minutes. Cool it down to 37°C. Extract the liquid with an injector and push it down slowly, drop by drop, to a bath of very cold oil.

ELCIELO After years of anticipation, celebrity chef Juan Manuel Barrientos is firmly ensconced in the kitchen of Elcielo Miami, whipping up his unique, delectable creations. For Elcielo, considered one of the most inventive restaurant brands in Latin America—and now Miami (natch!)—the young (31, to be exact) and innovative Chef Juanma has perfected the blending of science with traditional Colombian cuisine to create some of the world’s most innovative dishes; to wit: the “tree of life,” or yucca bread propped up on copper wires to resemble foliage. The à la carte Comfort Food lunch menu, served daily, allows guests to experience the original and intricate dishes created by Chef JuanMa, in a different atmosphere than the 10- to 15-course dinner tasting menu, which is offered every day except Sunday and Monday and promises a parade of intriguing, arguably life-changing, sights, tastes and textures.

THE CONTINENTAL Stephen Starr’s latest Miami eatery, The Continental— an evolution of sorts of the much-loved Philadelphia staple, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary this month—is Starr’s fourth restaurant in South Florida, following the success of Steak 954, Makoto, and Verde. Menu highlights include the Build Your Own Sushi, where tuna, salmon, sushi rice, toasted nori, vegetables and garnishes are presented in a bento box with instructions on how to be your own sushi master; Vegetables on Ice, with ranch, hummus, ssamjang, and crisp crudité veggies; Backyard Burger, with aged cheddar, Nueske’s bacon, onion, pickles, ketchup, mustard served on a Kaiser roll with French fries; Charred Broccoli served with romesco, pickled chilies, Marcona almonds, lime; and Whole Globe Artichoke with dijonnaise. Cocktails offer unique twists on old classics that infuse fresh herbs and change things up—to wit: coconut water in your Old Fashioned—and the service is the friendliest you’ll find in South Beach. Our only regret was that we didn’t leave enough room for the Crackerjack Sundae for dessert, a good excuse to return soon. 2360 COllins Avenue, MiAMi BeACh, 305.604.2000; COntinentAlMiAMi.COM.

Taste & Tranquility Artistic design creAtes mAgic for muse buyers on serene sunny isles beAch.

By Linda Marx

With the South Florida condo boom continuing apace, it becomes more and more difficult to keep track of all the new ones popping up. But the conceptual design of Muse, a joint venture between S2 Development and Property Markets Group (PMG), really does stand out in the crowd. The artistic elements of this project envelop the building’s exterior, as it appears to blend in with the ocean waves. Attention to detail and interior personalization are additional key factors in this one-of-a-kind development, which is scheduled to be completed by spring 2017. “A whole world sets Muse apart from other projects,” says its ISG World sales director Andres Valdivieso, 33, who started his real estate career in Colombia before relocating to Miami. “From having a boutique approach with only 68 units to featuring more than 50 feet of ocean frontage on each residence to being equipped with the highest quality and latest technology, Muse is unique because we have designed it with the buyer in mind.” MAIN PHOTO:
