It’s that time of year again when I talk about the holidays— specifically, the Holiday Gift Guide that we publish every November. It seems that this year more than any previous year, I was bombarded with gift ideas (starting in June) from public relations peeps representing every industry from beauty to technology to luxury leather goods (my personal fave) to health and fitness…you get the idea. There was so much to parse through and there were so many options that I actually considered expanding the section from 10 pages to 12 or 14. Then I came to my senses. I’m past the age (or almost past it) where I even think about holiday gifts other than the ones I’m planning to buy for others. There are very few actual “things” in this world that I feel any lust for at this point in my life, but I am human, after all—I do like a nice bag or a fab bottle of perfume here and there. Still, given the weather here in South Florida over the past months—as cheesy and disingenuous as it may sound—I really believe that if I could wish for one thing this year, it would be an actual winter that feels like winter. I would even take fall. It’s mid-October as I write this, and frankly the current temperature outside—88 degrees with what feels like 90 percent humidity—is seriously killing my vibe. And yes, I fully realize that my friends to the north would

love to have this problem, but let’s face it: It’s all relative. I’m not asking for a blizzard. I’m not even asking for snow. I’m not asking for much, really. Just thermometer readings under the 75-degree mark. And with those, the corresponding FPL bills under $500. (Not a typo.) Anyway, you probably have bigger and better items on your holiday wish list, as do your loved ones. So you won’t find my intangible idea of a gift in our guide, but you will find plenty of items that you may just consider perfect for the family members and friends on your list. We hope so, anyway. And stay tuned for the December/January issue, where we continue throwing out options to those of you who wait until the last minute to get your buying done. Who knows? By then, you may need to slip on a jacket to head out to the mall—or at least a longsleeve shirt. After all, hope springs eternal, especially this time of year. Enjoy the issue.

The latest hot chef to hit Miami is Alex Guarnaschelli, at Nautilus Cabana Club and Driftwood Room. The opening date keeps moving, but that just makes us anticipate it more—Food Network superstar Alex Guarnaschelli has been named the culinary force behind the upcoming Nautilus Cabana Club and Driftwood Room at the new Nautilus South Beach hotel at 1825 Collins Avenue in Miami Beach. The original buzz had it opening October 1st, but like the beautiful people heading out to the club in SoFlo, these things tend to run fashionably late. Guarnaschelli says she wants the restaurant to feel “beachy and fun”—interpret that as you will—and plans to offer up grilled fish, Mediterraneaninfluenced salads, et al. “First and foremost is the fact that we are still very much a family-owned company. Our business is based on traditions that date back to our founding in 1863. Another factor that sets us apart is that the cognac region of France consists of six separate sub-territories. We are based out of the heart of the cognac region, which has the designation Borderies. And not only is that historically regarded as the top region for producing cognac, but of the big five producers, we are the only one that is based in Borderies. One of the things that allows us to do is create an exclusive, single-estate cognac, which is unique in today’s market because it means all of the grapes come from a single location. They are not blended from multiple locations.”

“There has been tremendous growth in the interest in and demand for fine cognacs in South Florida. For example, a lot of Europeans come to South Florida and they are very familiar with our brand. And another key demographic for us is the Russian community in places like Hallandale Beach and Sunny Isles Beach. Yet another key market is the Canadians that travel so often to South Florida. So the fact that we are the established brand for fine cognacs in their native countries helps us very much because so many of them are moving here or coming here on vacation. They are happy to find our products in US stores, as well as the bars and nightclubs they frequent. And our product lines cover price points from entry level cognacs to the finest and most exclusive cognacs in the world today.”

“In Florida, we have very strong market coverage, and in South Florida, even more so. We are distributed [here] by Premier Beverage, one of the area’s top distributors. Our products are available across a range of fine wine retailers, as well as in leading hotels and resorts. We’re also available in top country clubs, nightclubs and so forth. Some of the South Florida hotels that sell our products are The Breakers, Acqualina Resort & Spa in Sunny Isles Beach, and W Hotel and The Setai in South Beach. We’re also sold at the best steakhouses, including at the Fontainebleau in Miami Beach. There are also many other well-known fine dining restaurants that serve our products.”

What sets you apart from your competitors? “The thing that really sets us apart is that we are a design-based company. That means that we save our clients money and time because we are controlling the entire project, from the very beginning of the design phase, under one roof. A client does not have to go find another architect or engineer to handle any part of their project. We do it all as a single company, with every service provided in-house. And that kind of fullservice capability saves our clients time and money. It also makes us unique.”

Founded in 1986, Fort Lauderdale-based American Building Engineers (ABE) provides design, engineering, construction and inspection services for residential, commercial, healthcare and industrial projects. Over the last three decades, the company has done business with virtually every major real estate developer in South Florida, as well as a long list of sophisticated individual clients who build, renovate or expand their residences or business locations. How did that business model evolve? “The design-based idea is fairly new. We are one of very few companies in South Florida that approach a project that way. And we have worked for years to create that business model, because we were always known as engineers and as a construction company. But we always had the idea that we wanted to handle every phase of a project from start to finish. A lot of other companies say they are design-based and full-service, but in reality they outsource the design to another company, which the client doesn’t know until there is some kind of problem. And once there is a problem, the client learns that there is a third party involved, and that can make finding a solution to the problem much harder and more complicated. With us, no matter what phase of the project we are talking about, our client is working with someone who is an employee of American Building Engineers. And that makes the process very efficient and economical.”

Q3:

What kinds of residential projects do you do? “The residential projects we do include everything from renovation or expansion of an existing home to complete design and construction services for a new home or a condo or apartment complex. And we handle everything from the conceptual phase to the design and construction. We do a lot of custom luxury homes, including waterfront homes. We also do condominium and apartment projects. For example, we now have several major projects underway in Bay Harbor. Those include a 30-unit condominium and also four townhouses that we are designing.”

The latest and greatest professional office building in South Florida is going up in Aventura. The contemporary, state-of-the-art New Medical Center of Aventura will comprise 142,500 square feet and keep the focus on medical practices and healthcare providers as tenants. As an example, a botanical terrace garden is planned for the 8th floor that will contain approximately 7,500 square feet of park-like green outdoor space, visually accessible from all office spaces on levels 8 through 11 and offering long-range southern views of Miami skyline and Biscayne Bay. In addition, a rooftop horticulture center is set to grow fresh vegetables and produce that will be served at the building’s food service establishment and potentially supplying locally grown fresh produce to the community. New Medical Center is expected to be completed by early summer 2017. 94

Rear passengers may control most features (that don’t actually drive the car, anyway) via a separate, 7-inch tablet housed in the fully trimmed center console. No matter where you sit, you’ll be surrounded by the best materials BMW has ever installed in a car, assembled with its highest-ever level of skill. A two-scent perfume atomizer is offered for olfactory stimulation. Material authenticity is also a bragging point— everything that’s metal is metal in here—and despite the rife LCD and TFT screens and iDrive controller, the cabin is surprisingly warm. Should you be tasked with driving, don’t expect an experience like your neighbor’s M6. Despite the use of carbon fiber in the roof and structure helping to reduce the car’s mass, the 7 remains a limousine first and foremost. It performs best at high speeds on fast roads, where its rock-stable, Autobahnbred handling is on full display and one can even use some of its semi-autonomous driving features. It doesn’t embarrass itself when the road gets twisty, either—cornering is flat and tilt-free—but especially on narrow roads, the 7’s size of the car is impossible to mask. As for power, we can only vouch for the formidable, right-now thrust of the 750i’s near-silent 445-hp turbocharged V-8, though a 320-hp 740i model is also offered for the more leisurely set. If there’s a bone to pick, it’s that styling advances only a smidge with the 2016 model, despite all body components being new. This makes it difficult to tell you’re looking at a new 7 unless it’s parked next to an old one (hint: look for the “hockey stick” trim on the doors). Then again, luxury sedans are generally not in the business of making fashion statements; rather; these are the business suits of the automotive world. Indeed, “sleek but subtle” is the name of this game, a game that’s played by the world’s most esteemed car brands and won by any customer with the means to participate. If the weapons in this game are comfort, craftsmanship, and technology, the Rolls-Royce-influenced 7-Series gives BMW its most competitive player yet.

Whether it’s during the hype preceding one of her always muchanticipated film projects or because she’s dating the ex-husband or former boyfriend of some other young blonde actress or singer, or because she’s speaking out about a cause or against a presidential candidate she finds abhorrent, or because she’s blurting out some jaw-droppingly candid admission, Lawrence is a fixture on the international radar. One of the latest: Lawrence recently admitted to MTV News during an interview—in which she was joined by her Hunger Games co-stars Liam Hemsworth and Josh Hutcherson—that she’s not above peeing in sinks. Asked about any nasty habits she might want to confess, she said she’s much more likely to do that than wait for a stall to open up. “I’ve peed in some sinks,” she casually remarked. “When two girls go into a bathroom, someone’s gotta take the sink. I actually like taking a sink. One could wait, but if the one waiting is me, she’s going to the sink.” She topped that off by adding, “I don’t wash my hands after I go to the bathroom.” But such pronouncements never blow back on the Academy Award-winning actress; in fact, she seems immune from controversy. Her most recent rants in the press have had to do with none other than Donald Trump (granted, she’s not the only one speaking out against the bouffant-topped buffoon).“If Donald Trump becomes president, that will be the end of the world,” Lawrence told Entertainment Weekly. “I genuinely believe that reality television has reached the ultimate place where now even things like this might just be for entertainment. brilliant idea.” She added, “I was watching him on the campaign trail and one guy said, ‘I love Donald Trump because he’s saying everything I’m thinking and I just can’t say it because of the PC factor.’ And I’m thinking, ‘You are absolutely right. That’s who I want representing my country, somebody politically incorrect. That will just be perfect.’” Lawrence has never been shy when it comes to expressing her sentiments, regardless of the subject. When hackers exposed the private photos of hundreds of famous young women—herself included—Lawrence posed on the cover of Vanity Fair and declared to the thieves, “You should cower with shame. It’s my body, and it should be my choice, and the fact that it is not my choice is absolutely disgusting.” She can get away with all of this now, because within the past few years, Lawrence has risen in the Hollywood ranks at warp speed. She’s an Oscar winner, she fronts the billion-dollar Hunger Games franchise, and currently not only has the final film in the series—The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2—coming out, but also The Rosie Project in pre-production; Joy, a David O. Russell project co-starring Robert De Niro and Lawrence’s frequent co-star Bradley Cooper; and X-Men Apocalypse in post-production, and Passengers, a sci-fi vehicle with Chris Pratt, Michael Sheen and Laurence Fishburne, currently filming at press time. But in spite of the stellar success, awards, big-money pay days and legions of adoring fans, Lawrence has seen the seedy side of fame more than once in her young career. And in a new interview, the Oscar winner reflected on the emotional toll her celebrity has taken on her.

“The whole world starts looking at you differently,” Lawrence told Entertainment Weekly, reflecting on how much her life changed with fame. “I remember getting really emotional just trying to get a coffee, because I felt everywhere I looked, everybody was reacting and it made me feel alienated. All of a sudden, I didn’t feel a part of humanity in this weird way.” The actress says she did her best to insulate herself to the sudden lifestyle change. “I was living with my best friend and I surrounded myself with such a good group that were all, obviously, looking at me the same.” Lawrence says she resented how much less freedom she had. “I was angry for a long time because I felt like I should have the right to drive without being followed,” Lawrence explains. “I should have the right to not be photographed, especially when you’re going to put my picture next to a story that came out of fucking nowhere.” Last November, after Lawrence fell victim to a photo-hacking scandal, the Oscar winner told Vanity Fair, “Just because I’m a public figure, just because I’m an actress, does not mean that I asked for this. It does not mean that it comes with the territory. I can’t believe that we even live in that kind of world. People forget that we’re human.” Ultimately though, Lawrence says that she’s trying to move past the anger and frustration. “I was so angry for a long time and now I feel like I just don’t have the energy for that anymore,” the actress explains. “I’ve got such a great life and such a great job. There are some shitty things that come along with it, but you know, whatever.”

key to a successful holiday party is a

happy and relaxed host. While no party planning can be 100 percent stressfree, there are some tips you can take to help ease the stress that comes along with the task. We know, because we’ve asked our experts in the field to share theirs with us—and it turns out that, with ample preparation and knowledge, a confident host can toast the holidays with a fun and festive party, allowing enough time to enjoy mingling with the guests. 130

1. SET THE MOOD Christofle’s national brand manager Justin Trabert, who is based in the Bal Harbour Shops store, believes every holiday party should have a theme. From invitations to table settings to goodbye gifts, consistency is key. “Both continuity and color are important for a holiday party,” says Trabert, who favors purple or cobalt blue for the royal look, gold and silver used together for a sophisticated feel, and black and silver for a spirited New Year’s Eve. “Color should be dominant and used in new ways, like displaying colored glass goblets on the table as votives and using wood against silver.” Some theme ideas include National Lampoon Christmas Vacation (over the top), Auntie Mame (glamour and sophistication), Saints & Sinners for New Year’s (guests wear white as saints; red as sinners) and Feast of the Seven Fishes for Christmas Eve (when Italians serve 7-13 different seafood dishes family-style). “I grew up with my mom observing this Italian-American tradition during Christmas, and its something I like to do in the restaurant,” says Thomas Op’t Holt, executive chef at the new deep blu (folo) Seafood Grille in Jupiter‘s Harbourside.

2. PREP, PREP, PREP make the holiday party fun for guests and for yourself by preparing a checklist in advance to avoid unnecessary stress. Take a few pointers from elizabeth Scokin, president of elizabeth Scokin Products, a special events firm in Miami, New York, Nashville and Atlanta, and Lynne Goldberg, event specialist with boca entertainment in boca raton. • PLAN AHEAD “Send out invitations to family and friends three to four weeks before the event, because calendars fill up fast for the holiday season,” says Scokin. PaperlessPost. com has chic and eco-friendly invitations. • SECRET ROOM Designate one area in your home for prepping and be sure to keep guests out, Goldberg advises. “Organize it specifically for the party, make it accessible, and you will have a place to mix and match and feel more confident of flow.” • CHAMPAGNE LOUNGE Use the spare bathroom as a champagne bar, suggests Scokin. “Arrange champagne bottles in a glam bathroom decorated with understated holiday décor, like candles, snowglobes and a couple of nutcrackers. Have a tuxedoed butler pouring the bubbly to delight the guests.” Set up a second bar in the main party room. • SWEET ENTERTAINMENT Once the cocktails are flowing, Scokin suggests introducing games, such as asking guests to describe their favorite holiday adventure from childhood based on one of the trinkets contained in the english Christmas crackers you can display at each place setting. or, start a revolving Christmas tale by beginning a story and having each person around the table add a segment. be sure to set time limits. • EASE OF ENTERTAINING Choose foods that are simple to prepare or serve and a signature drink that is equally uncomplicated. Keep all decorations holiday-themed, says Goldberg. •  LESS IS MORE Choose a glamorous, even sexy, yet understated dress with shoes that are chic but not so uncomfortable that you’ll be grimacing rather than smiling all evening. •  MEMORABLE MUSIC Choose music to fit the vibe and party theme early on—and stick to it, says Goldberg. •  ENJOY THE PARTY! most important, both pros insist, is for the host to relax and mingle with guests. 3. CREATE A DAZZLING DECOR nothing creates a magical holiday mood quite like candlelight. Lighting in general, especially dimmers, works wonders for this, setting the atmosphere and casting an ambient glow on your guests. But candlelight will transform any space. “i like to place a scented candle in the bathroom, but try to avoid them in the living areas or kitchen so they don’t compete with the food,” says Jessica zeidler rojas, of A Joy Wallace Catering, Design and Special events in Miami. “There are also lots of choices for flameless candles to take the stress out of a possible wax spill or unattended area. And they still allow for a beautiful and effortless glow.” zeidler rojas also believes there is no element of space that makes a bolder decor statement when entertaining in the home than the table’s centerpiece. And the table reflects who you are. 132

4 CENTERPIECE IDEAS • W ayne Haltiwanger from BRAVA! in Miami’s Adrienne Arsht Center believes adding scented candles and cinnamon sticks are fine for a centerpiece as long as they don’t overpower and mask the flavors of the menu or block the line of guests’ sight across the table. • F or an edible centerpiece, says Robert Bellini, pastry chef at Eau Palm Beach Resort & Spa’s Angle Restaurant, start with a dark brown base with forest green moss, top it with toasted almonds and candied pecans, then add thinly sliced caramelized dried apples and pears along with yellow and orange oak and maple leaf tuiles accented with chocolate twigs. “This makes a magical still life piece with healthy ingredients,” says Bellini. • I ncorporate seasonal fruits like artichokes or pomegranates with low, lush flowers that feel effortless but at the same time look spectacular in the center of the table, suggests Zeidler Rojas. • A rrange some small and colorful nutcrackers from your collection around a bowl of raw and organic nuts to the theme of George Balanchine’s version of Tschaikovsky’s The Nutcracker, the most famous stage production of ballet performed during the holiday season.

• P lace a fabulous tabletop-size Christmas tree (available from several online resources) in the center of the dining table with room for tiny, individually wrapped goodbye gifts underneath it. Once the guests have admired it during the cocktail hour and before they are seated, move the tree to a table near the exit so they can receive a gift as they leave the party. Replace that centerpiece with chocolate truffle candies and mini cupcakes in your theme colors surrounded by gorgeous flowers and seasonal plantings from your garden or favorite florist. hen Debra Yates was commissioned to redesign a 1960s era house on the riviera Canal, an open-water channel close to the ocean in Key West, she knew this would be a special project. since there are very few houses on the water in Key West, Yates, a designer and painter, was excited to bring her clean-lined and functional style to a magical place where she could virtually start from scratch. “the interiors were gutted, and I basically started over,” says Yates, co-owner with her son, benjamin burle, of burleYates Design, a south Florida firm that designs landscapes, interiors and structures. Yates is known for her cool, minimalist style, which combines tranquility with sophistication. she calls her design approach “subtropical Modernism” and this house, “subtropical island modern”. such

a fresh design was perfect for this dated, 1,936-square-foot home. It needed a shot in the arm, complete with contemporary style, color and modern lighting. “I worked closely with the contractor and the owner, who has good taste,” says Yates. “The house is on the main way to get in and out of Key West, and I wanted it to look fabulous. Everything had to be approved by the historical society.” She installed floors, windows, skylights, and even added a new roof. She also created a 210-square-foot wing, which became the master bath, and a 160-square-foot boathouse (one bedroom and one bath), which is totally new construction. In the outdoor areas, Yates added tiles, built decks in the pool section, created a sculptural red wall that hides the outdoor shower attached to the boathouse, and designed columns attached to the awning of the guest quarters/office. “When I do both the interior and exterior of a home, I like to be sure the outside space is also great,” she says. “People should make the outside integral from the start. The outdoors is just as important as the inside.” With Yates’ additions, the redesigned home is now 2,306 square feet, excluding the garage. The property’s main rooms include the guest quarters, living room, kitchen, study and master bedroom/bath. In addition are the boathouse, pool decks and exterior sitting sections for the many parties, auctions and fundraisers held here. But the job required extensive labor. In fact, there was a great deal of design work done at the beginning of construction because the concept had to be compatible with the contemporary space. “My client gets it,” says Yates. “She keeps a simple

Challenges were easily overcome as they worked on each area. “A great client wants me there to avoid problems,” says Yates, who holds a B.A. in Design from Florida State University. “I know construction, and I catch things before they get out of hand.” The living room, which delights with a savvy use of colors like apple green, olive and a burst of orange, offers comfort and style with equal billing. While glass doors open to the pool offering a lovely canal view, Yates designed a large orange piece for the room which creates a foyer. Wiring is underneath with audio-visual on the other side. The functional/artsy piece stands out, yet does not overwhelm. The wall across the living room is painted apple green and provides more of the room’s energy, as does a pair of light olive chairs. Yates designed the bamboo floors and entertainment center as well as the central air, skylights and other lighting in this space. The kitchen repeats the bamboo floor and has track lighting recessed into the dry wall. The countertops are made of poured concrete. A glass-topped dining table—Yates

created the template, then had it made— works well with the white walls, stainless steel appliances and bold colored art. “The client is a cook and enjoys being in the kitchen,” says Yates. The rest of the house is also cool, harmonious and spare. The white master bedroom with Travertine marble floors is serene and comfortable. Yates opened the wall and built the master bathroom to offer a more complete sanctuary. With views of the canal through floor-to-ceiling glass windows, the owner can lie in bed and gaze outside or pull the curtains for privacy. The white bathroom also has Travertine marble floors, tile on the walls and views of the canal. Yates ordered double sinks with oval bowls and selected faucets by the French designer Philippe Starck. And she mixed and matched looks from the bedroom for a uniform design. “I took some of the bedroom material and cut it in four-inch squares to use for a bench in the bathroom,” she says. The charm continues outdoors. Off of the living room is a dining area that resembles an enchanted garden. The door leading from the guest room opens here, too, and Yates has enclosed some of the space

with corrugated aluminum. Minimalist gardens with mostly native landscaping are part of her projects, and she likes to design houses and gardens together as one unit, often using the same materials inside and out. She blurs the lines with sliding glass walls inviting the outside in and the inside out. By doing so, there is no major distinction. This house is an example of Yates’ flowing design philosophy. The existing pool was enhanced with gray tile and now matches the concrete of the outdoor dining space, setting the stage to take advantage of Key West’s tropical offerings. “I built a raised deck at the pool with room for two chaise lounges and another deck that is two steps down to the canal with a bench overlooking the water,” she says. For lighting, she likes to take floor lamps outdoors and create interesting effects in the garden. After all, she says: “This is a great party house!” Yates is very happy with the end result. She felt it was a wonderful project because she was able to do what she wanted. “The contractors knew I had aesthetic control, and the client was good,” she says. “We kept life simple.”

There’s none of that stiffness that often pervades the atmosphere at such ritzy properties, and even though the clientele here comprises a range of travelers from around the world—some of whom come from as far as Brazil with families of 12 or more in tow and rent multiple rooms, we were told—there is an overall vibe that makes everyone feel like they belong. Relaxing is my personal favorite thing to do here, whether it be at the simply spectacular spa (if you’re going with a significant other, you must check out the Private Spa, with treatments for two—pick from the two-hour or three-hour experience—plus a steam shower for two and lunch), at one of the pools or beachside, where you can sip delights like pineapple mojitos served chaise-side and indulge in ocean-fresh ceviche and other delicious dishes. Evenings, settle in with a glass of wine and taste the creations of chef Anthony Dominguez, who inevitably materializes tableside to greet you and ask how you’re enjoying his innovative creations, like Yuzu Tuna Tacos, Kale Pecorino Salad and Lobster Tagliatelle. Step through the doors of 1 Hotel South Beach and it’s like entering another world—one that smells like heaven (the fragrance is actually emanating through the vents and the wood beams). Like its sister property in Manhattan, this one was designed in collaboration with eco-friendly architects and craftsmen who have managed to combine nature with the high design guests want from a South Beach hotel, using low-impact, reclaimed and natural materials throughout. “It’s simple. I decided that if I was ever going to create another hotel, I wanted it to be more than a brand; I wanted it to be a cause,” says Barry Sternlicht, chairman and CEO of Starwood Capital Group. “People are already living like this and are now looking for ways to travel in the same fashion.” Those people are welcomed into the lobby with 3,000 feet of living wall wrapped around its exterior, 11,000 local tropical plant varieties and playful art-as-nature pieces such as interactive hanging terrariums and a plant laboratory from local Miami artisans Plant the Future. Colorado beetle kill pine was used to make 168

the bed headboards and all the rooms have custom hemp-blend Keetsa mattresses topped with hypoallergenic, 100 percent organic linens. Even the clothes hangers are made from recycled paper, and natural stones engraved with the words “not now” take the place of “do not disturb” signs. Rooms are huge at 700 square feet, with inviting daybed couches meant for sprawling. Notable guest perks include Tesla premium electric car service for transportation within a pre-set radius, complimentary bicycle valet, free parking for guests who bring their own electric vehicles and digital newspapers on an in-room device. (And of course, there is free Wi-Fi, because who can live without that?) Guest services can be requested via a handheld, remote control-like Nexus device, from in-room dining to in-room massage to valet service so you don’t have to stand around and wait for your car downstairs should you ever want to leave, which is highly unlikely. Superstar chef Tom Colicchio oversees the food and beverage programs at 1 Hotel South Beach, and from the cocktail Tom’s Flip on Collins, bubbling with frothy egg whites and imbued with cucumber vodka, at the lobby bar (aptly named Tom on Collins) to dinner at the chic, lively Beachcraft, he’s aced the job—but was there ever any doubt? The Gates Key West

Driving onto Roosevelt Boulevard in Key West from Miami, one would never expect to find a place like The Gates. At least, this seasoned Key West visitor wouldn’t. The high-traffic thoroughfare is one I always think of as a means to an end on the far side of the island. But I have been enlightened. Once inside the front doors of this cool, contemporary, comfortable and casual spot, you’ll forget the hectic nature of what’s going on outside its front doors. The boutique hotel, once a Days Inn, is one of those places that actually does deserve to be described with the overused term “a gem” of a place. The design is decidedly modern in the rooms, with whitewashed beams and cypress platform beds and local art on the walls, which wrap around the lively pool and its accompanying bar. The hotel is unique in a number of ways: there’s no restaurant on-site, but there is a gourmet food truck, The Blind Pig, which offers up delicious Cuban, Bahamian, Caribbean and Florida-inspired tapas designed by Chef Dave (formally, David Fuhrman, whose CV includes stints at Hot Tin Roof, A&B Lobster House and Conch Republic Seafood Company), along with sandwiches and burgers. Custom-designed blue-and-white bikes created just for The Gates’ guests are available for tooling around town. And the only rum distillery in Key West, Legal Rum Distillery, has partnered with

On that note, whether you enjoy cigars or not, it’s worth a visit to the Rodriguez Cigar Factory tucked away on Fitzpatrick Street in Key West, where you can watch the product being hand-rolled by several generations of the Rodriguez family and you may just end up sipping a cafecito and shooting the breeze for a couple of hours with the effervescent Danny Rodriguez. Getting ready for a vacation is always exciting, even though the thought of dealing with the airport—parking, security lines, et al—is always a drag. But there is one uplifting aspect of booking travel through Miami International Airport, as frenzied as it may be. Art works of every kind have been installed throughout all aspects of the airport, from the floors to the walls and even the ceilings. The large-scale works are particularly impressive, although the paintings and mosaics are gallery-worthy as well. And even though Miami is widely considered a “new” city when it comes to art and culture—mainly just since Art Basel began here 13 years ago—Dr. Yolanda Sanchez, director of Fine Arts and Cultural Affairs at Miami International Airport, has been curating art for the airport for 20 years. Sanchez has said her department works on a “shoestring budget” compared with galleries and museums, so much of the work is from up-and-coming artists in South Florida. And according to airport officials, there are at least 35 different projects happening at once inside the terminals.

Inside Terminal D, where moving walkways converge, is Miami artist Jan Stark’s mural, Meltdown, which Sanchez said was done with the idea of “enlivening the space,” since so many people move through the area. For her part, Stark knew as soon as she saw the space, after being asked to propose a project, that she wanted to cover everything, not just walls. “I wanted to have the audience immersed in the artwork,” she revealed during an interview with the press. There are stories behind every visual, enough to fill a book. In South Terminal, H, Level 2, American Airlines, Odebrecht and the Miami-Dade Aviation Department partnered to bring in two murals by Brazilian artist Carybé that were originally installed in the AA terminal of New York’s JFK Airport in 1960, but would have been destroyed when that terminal was set to be demolished. The murals were instead removed, restored, transported to and installed at MIA and put on permanent display here in 2009. (You can watch a video on the restoration and relocation of the Carybé murals on miami-airport.com.) In a nod to South Florida history, in Central Terminal, G, you’ll find How Sweet It Is!, the catchphrase of Miami Beach legend Jackie Gleason, whose variety series ran from the late 1940s to 1970, in various forms. Just inside Terminal D, there are paintings of the Everglades, enormous mixed-medium works and vintage photography. In a sentiment that one imagines is common to all artists whose work is displayed in the airport, poetry-inspired Mario Bencomo told a reporter as he was preparing a commission that he was excited about the possibility of travelers from around the world seeing his art. “When the opportunity came up to show here I immediately thought, I have to work for this project,” he said. 194

as part of Miami-Dade’s Art in Public Places programs is Harmonic Convergence (2012); Michele Oka Doner’s A Walk on the Beach places sea creatures beneath travelers’ feet as they traverse through terminal D.

Another unusual and remarkable set of works is by R&R Studios. Formed by constellations of brilliantly colored flowers formed into letters, All We Need is Love, Peace and Love, and All Together Now impart a message to travelers from all corners of the globe as they make their way through the airport, the idea being that even if it’s for a brief moment as one passes through, it’s spotted, admired, and uplifts those who see it. In conjunction with the MIA Fine Arts Division, Miami-Dade Art in Public Places (APP), one of the first public art programs of its kind in the US (established 1973 with the passing of an ordinance allocating 1.5 percent of county construction funds for artworks that are site-specific, permanent and integrated with architecture), has helped bring MIA to the forefront when it comes to public art; in fact, because of MIA’s immense construction program, it is currently the largest user of APP in the country. Perhaps one of the most famous—and favorite—is A Walk on the Beach (1995-1998) by Michele Oka Doner, swirls of starfish and shells embedded in the terrazzo floors located in Terminal D, Level 2; of the most breathtaking and memorable, Harmonic Convergence, a 72-foot window wall with diamond-shaped panes of glass in 150 transparent colors by architect and composer Christopher Janney, was integrated into the MIA Mover Station in 2012 and garnered much acclaim from art critics and enthusiasts alike. As Miami becomes more respected and recognized as a cultural city, more than just its residents are benefiting. Every person who travels through MIA will return home with the realization of just how important art is to the fabric of the Magic City. 196

By Linda Marx Although developer Joseph Kavana has owned the land for about 20 years, he waited until the time was right to create Metropica, his 65-acre, mixed-use master-planned CLOCKWISE community in the heart of Sunrise.
