Ready, Set, Go For just about everyone, the onset of summer conjures images of long-awaited and hard-earned relaxation: Traveling—or at least, spending unused vacation days lounging poolside or at the beach—grilling in the yard with friends, and fabulous sales (Memorial Day! Father’s Day! Fourth of July!). It’s something we’ve looked forward to every year since we were children counting down those last few weeks of school, whether we were heading off to summer camp or just not having to set the alarm in the mornings, thrilled at the prospect of longer days and 8 pm sunsets. One of the most fabulous aspects of being a South Floridian is that we get to

enjoy that summer essence all year long. Not just the sunshine and the heat, but the laid-back environment that has become the norm in this age of telecommuting, state-of-the-art technology that allows us to take care of everything from paying bills to filing stories by deadline, and “staycations”—which I’m pretty sure it’s safe to say no other place does like we do—that allow us to feel like we’re relaxing on holiday even when we’re only 20 minutes by car from our homes. We don’t wrap ourselves in sweatshirts and parkas all winter, so fashion and style are as much a part of our everyday lives as sleeping, breathing and eating.

Father-son bonding getaways on page 96.

It’s a lifestyle envied by people all over the world, and who can blame them? We are blessed, and it’s important that we know it, even though it’s easy to forget that when we’re pissed about it raining on our al fresco brunch plans, or because a boat show on the beach is causing us to sit in traffic. But really think about those complaints. If you do (#firstworldproblems), which rarely happens in the actual moment, you’ll realize how absolutely ridiculous it is to let things that are so inconsequential overshadow the giant gift that is life in South Florida. I’m guilty of it, too, without question. But I do see the error of my ways. And as spring slips into summer, I’m going to do my damnedest to stay cool—not just temperature-wise, but attitude-wise, too. And enjoy the gifts we’re given not just every day of summer here, but every day of the year. Enjoy the issue.

Check out Father’s Day gift ideas on page 114.

Q&A with Jaime Wasser, vice president of Wasser’s Exclusive Furniture & Interiors

Q1:

Since Wasser’s is a multigenerational business, what are the most significant trends you’ve observed over time? “Although aesthetics is the most important aspect of furniture design, function has become increasingly important to our customers and designers. The big trend our designers see today is more of a broad focus on design, comfort, utility and functionality. Clients used to be satisfied with furniture that just looks good. Now people want style and function. They want to fall in love with it, but also have it be functional on a day-to-day basis. What our customers see now is that because of today’s outstanding technology, our designers are able to provide them with gorgeous, luxury textiles and materials so our clients can live their active lifestyles at home without having any anxiety about furniture getting ruined from use.”

Q2:

IT’S A FAMILY AFFAIR FOR THREE GENERATIONS, THE WASSER FAMILY HAS BEEN SERVING SOUTH FLORIDA AS ONE OF ITS PREMIER PURVEYORS OF FINE FURNITURE. By John Buchanan

AVENTURA MAGAZINE

Founded in the 1940s by Leon Wasser and located on historic Fashion Row in Hallandale Beach since the 1980s, Wasser’s Exclusive Furniture & Interiors is today run by its third generation of family leadership, president Josh Wasser and his sister, vice president Jaime Wasser. The showroom is a sprawling, time-honored monument to fine Italian and American furniture, as well as vintage and antique items, and accessories from leading luxury manufacturers. Italian lines represented include Bontempi Casa, Constantini Pietro, Gruppo Tomasella, Zanette and Rossetto. Wasser’s also offers an exclusive collection of stylish, high-quality furniture manufactured in the US. Its longstanding reputation has also emerged from the fact the family are ardent supporters of the Hallandale community. Wasser’s Exclusive Furniture & Interiors is located at 19 NE 1st Ave., Hallandale Beach. For more information, call 954.454.9500 or visit WassersFurniture.com.

What do your customers most appreciate about you? “We give our clients the opportunity to get exactly what they want and also the ability to be carefree when it comes to their home furnishings. We offer a huge selection of high-quality furniture that is made in the US. We also specialize in fully customizable contemporary furniture that has style, but is also durable enough to last with multipurpose use. The other thing we always want our clients to know is that they will get excellent service before, during and after their purchase. That’s why our customers feel confident about doing business with us and come back again and again.”

Q3:

What are the most important advantages of being a Wasser’s customer? “We’re a family business that has been around for a long time. So one of the things that really sets us apart is that every customer who comes into our showroom is greeted and welcomed by a member of the Wasser family, so any customer who comes in immediately has an experience they cannot have anywhere else. They immediately feel welcome and comfortable. And our customers consistently tell us they get that feeling very strongly. Then that feeling is furthered by the level of service we provide every customer. It’s our service, as well as our furniture, that has sustained our reputation all these years. It’s really our service that we live and breathe and deliver every day. But we also sell convenience. That’s our formula. And it’s as simple as it sounds.”

IT’S THAT TIME: SWIMSUIT SHOPPING SEASON. AND NOW YOU HAVE PLENTY OF OPTIONS THAT WON’T SEND YOU STRAIGHT FROM THE FITTING ROOM TO THE BAR. Even though we practically live in swimwear year-round here in SoFlo, actually buying it—nay, trying it—can cause posttraumatic stress. Enter Citrine Swim, which designs full-coverage swim tops that are flattering and attractive for every body type. Their new Vallarta, Canary and Pavones tops provide no-slip coverage whether you’re balancing still on a paddle board or hitting the volleyball court on the beach. Beauties with smaller chests or pear shapes should check out the Hibiscus one-piece or Tilloo top to draw the eyes up, with fun cut-outs that flatter. Modest and sexy at the same time, these suits are available in a variety of colors and prints that pop against all skin tones, and retail between $88 and $165; at citrineswim.com. Also addressing the myriad body types that women need to fit, Solkissed—a Latininspired swimwear collection from Alejandra Boggiano—has taken fashion-forward silhouettes along with a modern aesthetic and infused her designs with a sassy Peruvian spirit, using embellishments and ruffles as elements of style while addressing issues such as a smaller booty (enhance with a Brazilian cut), larger busts (with sports-bra like support tops but with a lace-up detail), draped ruffles to enhance smaller cup sizes, highwaisted bottoms to camouflage love handles and high-cut leg holes to “lengthen” shorter legs. The swimwear is handmade in Peru by women micro entrepreneurs, so stock up and help support the individuals and families of those who make these lovely suits; prices range between $80 and $210, at solkissed.com.

Get ON Your Beauty Game

Vaso Spirou’s got you covered when it comes to summer beauty trends.

SALON VASO’S VASO SPIROU OFFERS INSIGHT INTO THE TOP THREE TRENDS FOR THE MEAN SEASON.

Vaso Spirou, of the eponymous Salon Vaso in Miami Beach—who, by the way, is also known as the “curl whisperer”—just happens to have a keen eye for upcoming trends in all beauty categories. Fortunately for us, she’s sharing three of those here to help us get a jump on summer.

MAKEUP TREND: The Tropical Eye While it’s always good to look natural, say goodbye to the “no makeup makeup” look for now. The summer makeup this year is all about pops of color. Bright blues and aquamarine colors for shadow will give you a tropical, ‘70s vibe.

HAIR TREND: All About Braids “This summer, the classic braid is coming back at new levels and I couldn’t love it more,” our expert says. A polished ponytail braid is super easy and the perfect day-to-night look. The multi-braid style and the crown braid are two favorites for an enchanting, yet bohemian feel. Not only will you look chic in a braid, but we all know how the Miami heat affects our hair during the summer, and a braid is a simple go-to when you just don’t know what to do with those frizzy locks.

NAIL TREND: Subtle Nails of Summer Unlike makeup trends, summer nails are going to be less about color and more about creamy pastels. Nude nails are what it’s all about, from neutrals like beige to pale peach. While these shades are subtle, they give your nails a classy, sophisticated and elongated look that matches any outfit. Salon Vaso is located at 1500 Alton Road, Miami Beach; reserve your appointment by calling 305. 674.7470 or visit salonvaso.com.

AVENTURA MAGAZINE

We all already know the W brand is fab; we’ve got the proof right in our own backyard. But the very first W Retreat & Spa in North America, W Vieques, which opened on March 25, 2010, is a hop and a skip over the water, eight miles off the southeast coast of Puerto Rico on the untouched island of Vieques. The property offers 136 guestrooms with views of the Atlantic, eight Fantastic Garden Retreats with a garden view, six Marvelous Retreats with an ocean view, and six Wow Ocean Front Retreats, all replete with W Hotel’s

signature beds with lush pillow-top mattresses, featherbed overlays, goose-down duvets and pillows, and 350 thread-count Egyptian cotton sheets. Additional highlights: ultra-plush W robes, Bliss products sink side, state-of-the-art entertainment systems, and openair bathrooms where you can soak in Agape’s minimal, natural tub designed by Patricia Urquiola, created exclusively for W Retreat & Spa Vieques Island. And let’s talk about the AWAY Spa. The 6,000+-square-foot space has rivulets and canals flowing throughout and scenic views of the ocean; in the main pavilion, manicures and pedicures are offered in a social sunken room situated in the middle, and water therapy treatment rooms have views of private stone gardens. A super-cool and innovative touch: UV-detecting bracelets by Netatmo June that you can borrow, bearing sun sensors masquerading as gemstones and which were designed by Louis Vuitton and Harry Winston collaborator Camille Toupet and that keep the wearer informed about sun exposure to prevent burning. Genius! For more information or to book, visit wvieques.com.

Peak xperience E PILOTING THE SEXIEST ROLLSROYCE IN HISTORY: THE 2016 ROLLSROYCE DAWN. By Steve Siler

60

AVENTURA MAGAZINE

Hundreds of feet above sea level on the steep coastal bluffs of Cape Town, South Africa, is Chapman’s Peak Drive, a twisty, two-lane stretch of asphalt containing 114 curves over just 5.6 miles and lined with craggy natural rock walls on one side and an uncomfortably low rock barrier on the other. Treacherous as it sounds, this road is famous for its views—vast, panoramic vistas of the South African coastline that get ever more spectacular around every bend. What little traffic there is moves at a “tourist” pace, with pullouts allowing

the curious to gaze upon the eastern Atlantic’s poetic vastness, scan the inky waters for breaching whales, or perhaps meet a cheeky wild baboon. Few places on earth present such a breadth of natural majesty with such incredible vividness as Chapman’s Peak Drive. Few automobiles on earth could measure up to scenery like this, which is exactly why RollsRoyce invited a handful of automotive journalists to drive its brand-new convertible, the Dawn, on this very road. First, only a convertible allows full enjoyment of any place where beauty comes from all directions, including above and—if you dare look—below. Second, as a Rolls-Royce, the Dawn is a spectacle in and of itself, with all of the elegance and power expected of a Rolls, and of course, a cabin where luxury comes from all directions. Rolls-Royce considers the Dawn to be the sexiest car it has ever built, and we’re hard-pressed to disagree. The long, broad hood, gleaming grille, slab-sided body and rear-hinged “coach” doors instantly identify it as a Rolls, but with its gently rising rear fenders—which Rolls calls “the feminine hips of Dawn”—ahem—the Dawn appears less formal and more sensuous than Rolls-Royces, including the Wraith coupe with which it shares

AVENTURIST drive time

its underpinnings. Should storm clouds fill the sky, the six-layer fabric roof rises in utter silence at speeds up to 31 miles per hour, sealing the cabin in 22 seconds. Even better, the roof’s low silhouette subtracts exactly none of its innate beauty. While most convertibles compromise rear seat space to make room for the folding roof, the Dawn is a true four-seater, welcoming fully grown adults in any of its four deeply padded seats. The buttery hides, gleaming aluminum, polished metal and book-faced wood veneers are arranged almost exactly as in the Wraith, with a similar suite of infotainment features offered as well. But whereas the Wraith’s sloping roof and thick rear pillars keeps its cabin private, the Dawn puts its opulence on full display once that top goes down, even extending the wood veneers beyond the rear seats to the tonneau cover. We could rattle off the Dawn’s list of sybaritic delights, but what really sets the interior of a car like the $340K Dawn apart from, say, a comparably equipped $150K Mercedes-Benz, is not the length of its amenities list, nor robotically perfect assembly. To the contrary, it’s the subtle warmth that comes when a human being, not a robot, mills a piece of wood trim, smooths a piece of leather over a door panel, or stitches a steering wheel. Barely noticeable to the untrained eye, those subtle variations— those “perfect imperfections”—are what make cars like the Dawn feel almost alive, and indeed, worth the money. With a 563-horsepower V-12 providing motivation, the Dawn is anything but underpowered; 62

AVENTURA MAGAZINE

Rolls says the Dawn can hit 60 mph in under five seconds, and we believe it. But the Dawn is deceptively large: exceeding the new BMW 7-Series by two inches in both length and width. And at 5,677 pounds, it weighs nearly 100 pounds more than a Cadillac Escalade—yet another reason to keep speeds reasonable. That said, the Dawn never lost its composure, holding on tenaciously on Chapman’s Peak Drive’s tightest corners as well as on other challenging roads around Cape Town. Still, at the end of the day, a more leisurely pace best suits the Dawn. This allows onlookers ample time to appreciate its lovely visage while its occupants revel in its sumptuous trappings without the distraction of a blurred landscape. And when your landscape is as stunning as that around Chapman’s Peak Drive, you don’t want to miss any of it.

JALFIQ ACCOUNTING

Receive professional advice from an accountant that will protect you from getting audited, not an accountant that will misguide you into avoiding taxation. It is imperative that your business structure is approached with the legal technique that will build the best results for you and your company, not only from a tax perspective, but also from a financial point of view. There are professionals that boast how much money they can get you back from the IRS, or how much money they can save you by bending the rules. You have to ask, is that really the kind of professional I want to guide me in my personal or business income taxes? The answer should be, no. You don’t need to break any rules to ensure the best possible results on your business tax returns. The right public accountant knows all the details in the Internal Revenue Code necessary, so that there is no need to invent any abusive tax shelters or fraudulent transactions. Want to learn more? But the actress—who’s appeared in Pearl Harbor, The Aviator, Whiteout, Contraband, and of course in the extraordinarily successful, reprised mainstay role of Selene in the Underworld series— doesn’t trade on her looks. In fact, her next big project takes her from ass-kicking to bringing a literary character to life onscreen. This May, Beckinsale is playing Lady Susan Vernon in Love & Friendship, a period drama based on Jane Austen’s novella Lady Susan. Historians aren’t certain exactly when Lady Susan was written, but they estimate it was sometime in the 1790s. Her nephew, James Edward Austen-Leigh, published the book in 1871, after Austen’s death. The movie was a perfect fit for Beckinsale, considering she studied Vernon in school. “I grew up in England, so it’s very much a part of the curriculum in English [class]—you read Jane Austen,” Beckinsale explains. So the actress had no problem projecting herself back in history to tackle the 1790s oldfangled lines in her role

Doug Curran PHOTO:

as Lady Susan Vernon, a manipulative character always ready with a quip and who’s got a penchant for the finer things in life. “It’s one of the most dialogue-heavy movies I’ve ever done,” the actress says. For the Lady Susan Vernon character, Beckinsale had to make several costume changes through a host of different time periods, some of them not the most comfortable. “You have to learn some special skills, in terms of keeping a hat on that weighs 300 pounds,” she notes. And of course, the role required some research. “[Austen] wrote it, and what we can gather is that it was a bit sort of frivolous and not serious enough, which is actually part of what I think makes it turn into such a funny and interesting Jane Austen film,” Beckinsale says. “But it’s not typical. It’s not a love story; you know, a lot of her famous work is very romantic. This is isn’t very romantic at all. It’s funny, and the characters are a lot more hard-edged.” The book is written as an epistolary novel. “It’s all in metaphor, and it’s really, really short. But it’s incredibly in-depth in terms of character.”

Beckinsale landed her first movie role early on. “I went to a British school, and I was in a school play, and somebody’s mother was a casting director and said, ‘Will you go up for this movie?’ And I did. And I don’t think I got the first thing I tried, but then I was asked to go to something else, and it sort of started off like that,” explains Beckinsale, who was 18 at the time. “My first summer at Oxford, I did Much Ado About Nothing,” she adds. She would later drop out of Oxford to pursue her true passion—acting. In 1996, she had the good fortune of familiarizing herself with Austen’s style of writing. “I had been in a production of Emma before, so I studied that pretty hard. I’m definitely a Jane Austen fan.” That’s not something that might be apparent to fans who came to know the badass beauty that hit the public’s radar first in 2003, when she played Selene in Underworld. She reprised the role in Underworld: Evolution (2006), Underworld: Rise of the Lycans (2009), Underworld: Awakening (2012), and next in Underworld Blood Wars, which hits theaters in October. The role has shown consistent gains at the box office, never performing under each successive film’s budget. Beckinsale has garnered a loyal fan following for the series, and is an absolute rock star at ComicCon every year, which started in 1970 in San Diego for lovers of comic books and movies but has since spawned into a massive festival of sorts where scores of A-list actors go to promote upcoming projects. “They come dressed up as you, or whatever your character is for the movie,” Beckinsale says of attendees. “They’re very respectful; very involved. I’m very lucky with those fans,” she continues. “I have to say, I will support anyone who will go out Saturday morning dressed up as Wolverine or whatever—hit the streets—and take all their kids. I just think, that’s my kind of person.” MAY 2016

RESTAURATEUR/CAPTAIN JIM’S SEAFOOD MARKET RESTAURANT, AVENTURA AGE: 64 MIAMI DAD TO LUCAS, 8

The biggest lesson having a child has taught me is… When you have a child, you quickly learn that it is no longer about you. Everything disappears except for that child. It’s actually a wonderful epiphany. How Dad gets to be cool when Mom is not: Um, Mom is always cool. (You also learn how to answer questions like this.) Best compliment your kid could ever pay you: Thanks for always listening and caring...and the laughter. My motivation for jumping back in to this business was the chance to have my son experience the thrill of owning a restaurant and to learn at a young age the meaning of a strong work ethic. The majority of our customer base is repeat customers and many are families with children his age. It’s wonderful that everyone knows him by name and some of the children have become friends through the restaurant. Often the kids disappear into the walk-in refrigerators and Lucas shows off the live lobsters; it can be as many as five or six kids! Hey, I’m in heaven...what more can I say!

MACADAM “MAC” GLINN

SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT AND SOUTH FLORIDA ACCOUNT MANAGER AT SKANSKA USA AGE: 40 MIAMI SHORES DAD TO KENNEDY, 9, AND HARPER, 7

The biggest lesson having children has taught me is… To think very deliberately about whether something is an issue or it isn’t. I have a strong opinion about the right way to do things, with regard to almost every aspect of life. I also have a strong desire to make things easier for my girls and tell them the right way to do things. But you can’t do that with your kids; they have to learn things for themselves. So they’ve taught me to relax and enjoy the process wherever possible, to appreciate how they think, and to watch as they work things out for themselves. It’s usually fun to watch—they are brilliant little girls. How Dad gets to be cool when Mom is not: This happens very, very rarely. My wife, the interior decorator, is the epitome of cool, not to mention unbelievably beautiful and elegant. So she is normally a lot cooler than me. I did get appointed to Miami Shores Village Council last year and my girls think that is very cool. I also get to build amazing projects at Skanska, like the Frost Museum of Science, Pegasus at Gulfstream and Baptist Homestead Hospital, and they love to tour our projects and point them out to their friends. Best compliment your kids could ever pay you: My girls love to tell me that they think I am “hilarious”. And I love to make them giggle. As a person who believes that most people take life way too seriously, and that work is a lot less work when you’re laughing, that’s a pretty high compliment.

The biggest lesson having children has taught me is… That I can survive on far less sleep than I thought! On a serious note, they have taught me the need for perspective. Sometimes I get too caught up in things both good and bad but spending time with my kids reminds me what’s most important in life and what true happiness is and to me—and that’s family. How Dad gets to be cool when Mom is not: My boys both love to cling to Daddy when they get a little nervous doing something new or “dangerous,” whether it’s jumping waves in the ocean, snowmobiling, or riding a horse…they know Daddy will protect them (even when Daddy may be a little scared himself). Best compliment your kids could ever pay you: That I was always there for them. I grew up with parents that worked a lot, but I always felt like they were around and that I could talk to them. I try hard to balance work and family time and want my kids to grow up knowing that Daddy is always there for them anytime/ anywhere. My wife works miracles balancing it all to make sure the kids are a priority while still excelling at work. It’s something I’m working every day to improve.

How Dad gets to be cool when Mom is not: My wife and I share the same goal with our kids: to raise them to be happy, self-sufficient, and fun-loving. We do have different styles in parenting, as I have a more relaxed approach and goof off more with them. I loved playing

CEO/THE CHILDREN’S MOVEMENT OF FLORIDA, A STATEWIDE EARLY CHILDHOOD ADVOCACY ORGANIZATION AGE: 32 AVENTURA DAD TO: ISABELLA, 5, AND ARIA, 2

The biggest lesson having children has taught me is… Being a good example matters. In just their first few years of life, I’ve seen my girls pick up many of the habits that my wife and I may exhibit. It’s changed how my wife and I view our roles as parents, but, more importantly, how we view ourselves as individuals. How Dad gets to be cool when Mom is not: My wife, Mariella, is the most sensational mother I know. With that being said, she doesn’t always trust me to take the girls out on my own. Perhaps that is because our go-to “daddydaughter” trip is to Pinkberry or a less-than-healthy restaurant. When we’re not out eating pizza and ice cream, my primary role as Dad is to be the nighttime reader with Isabella and Aria. I’m not sure that makes me “cool,” but it’s definitely the most special moment of my day. Best compliment your kids could ever pay you: My work as the CEO of The Children’s Movement requires a lot of travel—and a lot of time away from my family. It’s a constant concern that I struggle with every day. So, the best compliment my daughters could give me would be to say that they realize my time spent away from home is in pursuit of giving all children across Florida the same opportunities that they have… and that they’re proud of me.

The biggest lesson having children has taught me is… They hear and see everything. If you find yourself saying things you shouldn’t or complaining, you can be sure they will emulate you. It is a good reminder to stay positive and to treat people well. There is no such thing as “do as I say and not as I do.” How Dad gets to be cool when Mom is not: The kids eat super-healthy when at home. We are partners in two Palm Beach bakeries, Paneterie and Patrick Leze. Their mother likes to sleep in on the weekends, so I get to run them out for sweet treats on Saturdays and Sundays. Easier to ask for forgiveness than for permission! Best compliment your kids could ever pay you: You always hope your children see you as a gentleman. Good manners are extremely important in our house. I would hope that they would think of me as one. That said, my daughter Derby told my wife Michelle that I was a giant and asked if I could lift a car... I could have killed my wife for telling her that I couldn’t!

With an abundance of light

and glimpses of the Atlantic Ocean, the 2,500-square-foot Palm Beach apartment owned by philanthropist and art collector Sandra Krakoff is a sanctuary of serenity. Designed by Krakoff with Nancy Edman of Boston, the 3-bedroom, 3-bath condo at the waterfront Biltmore is filled with art and fine furnishings. Krakoff had sold her Palm Beach home but wanted to stay on the island with her Yorkie, Bijou, so the team finished everything in just four months. “This apartment had been done two and a half years ago as a guest retreat,” explains Krakoff, the mother of fashion designer Reed Krakoff, the former creative director of Coach who recently formed his own fashion label, Reed Krakoff Designs. “It was a fancy style and the people took it all with them. So we started from scratch with my stuff.” Krakoff, who divides her time between Palm Beach and Boston, is on the advisory board of the Breast Cancer Research Foundation in New York, and a trustee of the Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston and the MorseLife Foundation in Florida. She donated the entire second floor of furnishings from her previous home to charity. For her eighth-floor apartment, Krakoff worked with West Palm Beach contractor Greg Giuliano to make necessary changes. For example, the kitchen originally opened to the entryway, so she closed it off and added a wine cooler and glass storage unit for her crystal. She also changed the full doors in the master bath to a sliding door, and removed a closet in the den to install a full bookcase.

The apartment’s flooring is made of large square Italian tile that looks like marble but is more durable. The den is covered in an original English carpet by Stark. Windows in the living areas are treated with plantation shutters, while two of the bedrooms have drapery. Unique in Krakoff’s apartment is a large pillar that divides the living and dining rooms. “The pillar separating the two areas could not be moved, so I asked sculptor Jane Manus to cover it in black,” says Krakoff, referring to an attached metal sculpture that helps transition the two rooms. “My friends love it!” The foyer leading to the apartment is distinguished by wall art, a 1750 antique bench in wood and velvet stripe, and a family of life-size collectible sheep. Krakoff bought the Les Lalanne sheep at the suggestion of her talented son Reed, whose own home has been featured in Architectural Digest. “I just love my sheep,” she says. “Reed has a good eye and suggested I buy them. We decorate all three for the holidays.” From the the foyer, entering the living room with its pure white walls is a feast for the style-minded. The space is a well curated mix-and-match of Krakoff’s art collection, her elegant family couches and her collection of throw pillows made from embroidered textiles. A white coffee table filled with small collectible art, including a dog sculpture, is wrapped in silk and painted. David Hockney painting of a swimming pool. “I envisioned it all and knew where to place things,” says Krakoff. “Everything worked perfectly.” The dining space looks like it was designed for the finest international showroom. With its broad stroke of color—black, white and orange set against subtle uses of gold—the room is festive and glamorous without being over the top. A glittery chandelier called “A Snow Ball” from Germany is a showstopper and always creates excitement, even for repeat dinner guests. The den is a sanctuary made for relaxing and reading. A David Hicks-designed rug in black, brown and white, coordinating throw, and contemporary canvas by German-born abstract painter Friedel Dzubas, add soothing tones and drama to the otherwise serene space. In the corner, a lady’s form created by a French Canadian artist stands tall with her waist highlighted by a brooch. “We call her Marilyn Monroe,” laughs Krakoff. While she goes back and forth to Boston, Krakoff has made Palm Beach her primary residence. She loves entering her artfilled haven which extends to the bedrooms. The master and the guest rooms are startling in their coordination of art and furniture with large expressive windows that have mesmerizing views of paradise. “The scenes of the island and the city I have from my bedroom windows look like a painting,” she says. “I love gazing outdoors.” The silk drapery in her master bedroom comes from her former house. The cornices are made of the same Holly Hunt fabric as her bedspread and headboard. A Venetian-glass mirror above her writing table works well as a contrast to some of the room’s contemporary lighting. “I used to have a separate office, but I am happy working with my writing space so I really don’t need that extra room,” says Krakoff. Near her desk is a doggie bed for Bijou flanked by small lamps that illuminate into the image of a bone when plugged into the wall socket. Bijou loves it. “Bijou sleeps there. It’s a private little place,” she says, “well located between the desk and my bed.” The guest bedroom shines with a large work of eclectic shells called “Curiosity Cabinet” that lends the room style and texture. Below, a contrasting white sculpture like the black one covering the public area pillar is another favorite. “Jane’s white sculpture was a house gift, and I just love it,” she says. Krakoff is delighted with her new space because the art she loves is everywhere. The collector, who moved in last November, is anxiously awaiting Reed’s visit because over the years he has given her gifts of art and furnishings and also advised her on what to buy. “Reed and his wife are very good with design, and I want them to see what I have done here,” she says. Meanwhile, Krakoff, a widow, is content to admire the family of sheep who greet her with kindness when she enters the apartment. “They are so adorable,” she says. “I couldn’t be happier in my new home.”

OPPOSITE: Animating the floral art in the living room are two ceramic balls done by a Mexican craftsman. “I fell in love with them,” says Krakoff, who is also smitten with the long gold Japanese environmental polemic by Takashi Taruya that depicts the Japanese lucky number of 9, a clean energy truck and a Starbucks-like logo. ABOVE: A dress formed to the shape of a woman’s body is highlighted at the waistline with a brooch. “We call her Marilyn Monroe,” Krakoff says. Miami INTERNATIONALLY ACCLAIMED

ARTIST MICHELE OKA DONER HAS LEFT HER MARK ON HER NATIVE CITY, AMONG MANY OTHERS. NOW, PAMM PRESENTS A BEAUTIFUL NEW EXHIBIT OF HER WORKS THAT RUNS THROUGH EARLY FALL. Through September 11, 2016, Pérez Art Museum Miami is presenting “Michele Oka Doner: How I Caught a Swallow in Midair”, featuring the work of the Miami native whose work has been presented around the globe since the 1960s. The robust selection of artworks by the Miami native and beloved, renowned artist included in the exhibition spans the duration of her career and highlights major moments in her artistic development, revealing the lasting influence of the natural world on her practice. “How I Caught a Swallow in Midair” coincides with the premiere of the Miami City Ballet’s presentation of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, for which costumes and sets were designed by the artist. “How I Caught A Swallow in Midair” takes its name from a 1990 cyanotype, a cyan-blue photographic print, in which Oka Doner captured an organic abstract shape that could be easily mistaken for a swooping swallow. In this work and others, the artist’s simple gestures transform aspects of the natural world into poetic works of art. Handmade pieces blend with naturally occurring materials— porcelain resembling volcanic stone, stone resembling seashells, bronze sculpted into 128

brambles and branches—while works on paper show the human figure made up of plants and other organic materials. Each of the roughly three-dozen pieces illustrates a pivotal turn in the artist’s career and was chosen in close collaboration between the artist and curator, making the exhibition an intimate portrait of her development over five decades. “This exhibition highlights the way our museum is always connecting the global with the local,” says PAMM director Franklin Sirmans. “Michele is an artist whose work has been celebrated internationally, but who grew up in our community and whose work draws on the natural environment that defines our city.” Oka Doner was born and raised in Miami Beach, and studied at the University of Michigan. Over the past 50 years, she has created sculpture, prints, drawings, artist books and video, as well as costume and set design, and is well known for her numerous spectacular public art installations throughout the

United States, including Radiant Site at New York’s Herald Square subway, Flight at Washington’s Reagan International Airport, and A Walk on the Beach at the Miami International Airport, one of the most viewed public artworks in the world. Oka Doner’s work is in the collections of The Metropolitan Museum of Art; the Whitney Museum of American Art; the Art Institute of Chicago; the Musée des Arts Décoratifs at the Louvre; The Victoria and Albert Museum, London; The Dallas Museum of Art; the St. Louis Art Museum; and the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum, among others. Michele Oka Doner: How I Caught a Swallow in Midair was organized by Thomas Collins, former PAMM director and current executive director and president of the Barnes Foundation. While those of us who knew and appreciated Collins’ work have definitely felt his absence, this exhibition is truly a gift from him for which Oka Doner’s fans are sure to be grateful.

“Cuba: From Gunboat Diplomacy to Good Neighbor Policy” THE WOLFSONIAN-FIU MUSEUM THROUGH MAY 15

Particularly timely given President Obama’s recent controversial visit to Cuba, this installation—which examines US-Cuba relations in the early 20th century—traces American foreign policy from Roosevelt’s “big stick” diplomacy and push for American involvement in the Cuban War of Independence in 1898 to the more conciliatory approach of Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s Good Neighbor Policy in 1933. Works selected by FIU undergraduate students will be drawn from The Wolfsonian–FIU Library’s collection—illustrated sheet music covers from the Spanish-American War, rare books and photographs from the Jean S. and Frederic A. STARBOARD, BOW AND VERY NOW RIVER YACHT CLUB’S VISIONARY DINING CONCEPT BRINGS A BREEZY, NAUTICAL ELEGANCE DOWNTOWN WITH A ROTATING ROSTER OF TOP CHEFS By Dirk DeSouza Once upon a time, the Miami River proved a watery magnet for scoundrels and scalawags, rusty scuppers and decomposing docks. Nowadays, sure, the river is still a working waterway for freighters and stevedores, but exciting dining is fast infiltrating its shores, from Il Gabbiano and Zuma to the east, to Seaspice and Casablanca Seafood to the west, making downtown Miami’s waterfront renaissance that much more delicious. But River Yacht Club is its new crown jewel, a mind-bogglingly voluminous dining and lounging compound that perfects the concept of tropical waterfront oasis, punctuated with impossibly chic modern design, lush bougainvillea-kissed grounds and a luxuriously minimalist decor that nods to the South of France. Most importantly, River Yacht Club’s goal is to both elevate and marry waterfront lifestyle dining with luxury boating culture, with What’s members-only docking, plus ample your favorite elbow room for 13 yachts. Conceived food city in and built by Dupoux Partners— the world? with landscape design from I love going back Raymond Jungles—the ambitious home to Melbourne, project, says Stephane Dupoux, Australia. There is always something hot and new on the scene.

ANTICA MARE We Floridians might not have realized it, but Marco Betti has been making quite the splash in Atlanta with his awardwinning restaurants. Now, following his better judgment, he’s brought his expertise to Miami. And it’s working. Debuting this past February, Betti’s Antica Mare is a modern Italian dining gem with breezy, bayfront seating perfect for taking in authentic, elegantly presented and downright delicious Tuscan dishes that benefit from some extraordinary though simple preparation techniques. Grilled octopus is so tender you literally do not have to chew it, and is imbued with just a hint of smoky goodness from a quick turn on the grill. Pastas are a combination of dried and homemade, depending on the sauce and accompanying ingredients, because as all phenomenal Italian cooks know, there’s a method to making a magnificent meal—like pillow-soft gnocchi with delicate tomato sauce and melty mozzarella (flown in from Italy). Everything— from the seared-to-perfection lamb chops to the meticulously seared and seasoned sea bass atop a bed of flavorful greens, to a panna cotta drizzled with berry sauce—sends the diner on a trip to Italy without the exhausting plane trip. It’s a dining experience not to be missed. 7999 NORTHEAST BAYSHORE CT.; 305.398.1001; ANTICAMARE.COM

VILLA CASTELLI Latin for a “luxurious fortress”, the name says it all for Villa Castelli in Surfside. Dripping in charming oldschool Italian glamour—think red chandeliers, a floor-to-ceiling wine larder and red roses on every table—the décor and dishes alike are as authentic as in the coastal Italian town that shares its namesake. Recipes handed down over generations like their handmade pasta, freshly prepared mozzarella and just-caught fresh seafood are only a few things on the menu that made our

mouths water. Sicilian-born Chef Gioacchino Sofia and Chileanborn, European-groomed Executive Chef Gonzalo Fuente Alba produce a monthly changing menu to keep up with Miami’s everevolving culinary scene. Blame it on the fine wine, the tiramisu or the harp player softly strumming in the corner, but the romantic Villa Castelli will leave you feeling nostalgic for a quick trip over to the old country. If for no other reason than it brightens our lives and the city’s dining scene as a whole, that term is spot on.

NOW YOU DON’T HAVE TO WHEN IT COMES TO YOUR NEW RESIDENCE, BECAUSE DEVELOPERS ARE OFFERING TOOLS THAT ALLOW YOU TO TOUR YOUR POTENTIAL FUTURE HOME WITHOUT DOING MUCH MORE THAN ROLLING YOUR EYES. The future has arrived for homebuyers. That’s because virtual reality is actually becoming—or has become—more than just a concept, thanks to developers who are integrating technology into their sales strategies, including virtual reality experiences of preconstruction projects. “As a real estate sales director for 25 years, I can tell you firsthand that you have to constantly be on top of what the latest advances in technology are,” says Dora Puig, director of sales and marketing at Palazzo Del Sol in Fisher Island. “It’s evolving at an almost daily and certainly exponential rate, so what worked for sales last year or even last month might be outdated today. In order to stay competitive in the industry, you have to constantly evaluate communications models and the psychology of each segment of your potential buyers and be cognizant of what point in the sales process they are in. Technology doesn’t make for a one-size-fits-all approach.” For example, Puig explains, a certain demo might be more receptive to social media marketing versus traditional print advertising, or a combination thereof. The important thing is to find the right balance to communicate.” One way to do that is with high-tech tools such as the one devised by the developers of Palazzo Del Sol: Sapient Nitro’s “Island Immersion Room,” which creates an environment within the sales center that surrounds buyers with the essence of Fisher Island. At the center of the room is a special interactive table—the “Magic Table”—developed to deliver a new kind of multi-touch “workshop” experience for brokers
