It doesn’t matter how, and it most certainly shouldn’t be just one day a year. It only matters that, with all the nastiness and scariness and foreboding out there in the world today, we find a way to focus on it—and feed it, and relish it—at all. Really, how could that be bad? What sets Hausscape apart from its competitors? “We specialize in high-end projects, which often cost $300,000 or more. So we understand what luxury means. And we know how to deliver it. What really makes us unique is that the company was founded by two architects. That is a different approach to the business, because architects are always inclined to put a lot of attention into design and quality. And for us, design and quality are always our main objectives. For example, we never cut corners on a project in order for it to be profitable. Design and quality always come first. As architects, we are trained to design and create spaces, not just cover walls with cabinets.”

“We are concerned about the environment and sustainability. We have been appointed the exclusive Valcucine dealer for the entire state of Florida. And Valcucine is the most respected company in our industry. It is not just another line for us. It is the only company in our industry that was created and developed in order to be a sustainable enterprise. For example, for the doors on their kitchen cabinets, they use less material. If you look at a traditional door on a kitchen cabinet, it’s three-quarters of an inch thick. In the case of Valcucine, the door is only one-quarter of an inch thick. And it uses an aluminum frame. Nothing is more sustainable than aluminum, and it is being used to support a door that uses less material. But Valcucine also still creates a superior product. And sustainability is very important today. It is a core value of our corporate philosophy.”
Why is sustainability so important in your industry? “It’s well known that particle board is a source of pollution, because of its use of formaldehyde, which is proven to be a carcinogen. But it is still being used in many kitchen cabinets. When you open the doors of many lower-end cabinets, what you smell is formaldehyde. And that is true even with some products that are called ‘high end,’ even though they are not. So it is very important for a customer to know what they are buying and to trust the company that is selling it to them. And that is another reason why people come to us. Because they know from our reputation that we have integrity and that we stand behind our products and our work. The market is plagued today with companies that call themselves ‘high end’ and charge high-end prices, but the quality of the products and the work is just not there.”

How have you developed your reputation for customer service? “When my clients hire me, they get me. They do not get my associate or my assistant. So whether they are buying or selling, they are always going to be dealing with me—and no one else. When they dial my phone number, they are always going to get me—not my secretary. And every day, I take care personally of whatever it is they need done. In today’s South Florida market, that makes me unique. But the other thing that is important is that I am very careful about the kinds of clients I take. And I will only take a certain number of clients at a time, because I only take on the number of clients at any one time that I know I can support with the level of service I am known for.”
What condo projects are hottest or most significant now?

“Fisher Island is always one of the hottest properties in the market. It’s also one of my personal favorites. And now, Fisher Island has new construction going on. It’s so big that it’s almost like a city unto itself. There are the older buildings that have always been popular. Now, however, there are three new buildings under development. And there is a lot of demand for them, because historically Fisher Island buildings have been ‘self-service.’ But the new buildings are very much fullservice, with security, concierges and valet parking. And those services are new for Fisher Island.”
What is the hottest property at the moment? “The other location that is really hot right now is the 1000 Museum property in Downtown Miami. And what makes it so hot is that it is the only building in downtown Miami that is an ultra-luxury, ‘seven-star’ kind of service building. It’s also across the street from the new Patricia and Phillip Frost Museum of Science and the Perez Art Museum, and a block away from the Adrienne Arsht Performing Arts Center. It’s at the epicenter of the new art-and-culture and downtown dining scene in Miami.”
What’s one more project that you and your clients find exciting? “In Sunny Isles, we have the new Turnberry Ocean Club. And what Turnberry has in common with a place like Fisher Island is that it has an extremely well established brand that is known all over the world. The other thing that Turnberry has is its reputation for its level of service. And it is also super-prestigious, just as Fisher Island is. The other factor that impacts the kinds of projects I’m talking about is that in recent years, there has been a genuine trend toward more demand for full-service properties that truly know how to cater to high-end residents. I see that now more than ever before, because that’s what customers are demanding in the price range we’re talking about.”

Rev Up Appetite The founder of the UK’s highly acclaimed London Motor Museum has announced the launch of Miami Supercar Rooms—the nation’s first auto art gallery and gourmet dining experience—scheduled to open this month in the heart of the Wynwood Arts District. The British-born automotive visionary Elo, who debuted his concept during Art Basel Miami Beach in December, brings his esteemed array of classic, vintage, exotic, sports and custom-made vehicles developed as the centerpiece for an aesthetically fueled concept in luxury automotive excellence, epicurean hospitality and nightlife entertainment, collectively considered to be the first experience of its kind in the country. “This is a showcase of my life’s work, combined with the ultimate in gourmet cuisine and entertainment,” Elo says. “South Florida has some of the most passionate auto enthusiasts and car collectors I have ever seen, and we are giving them a reason to show off their possessions to the world. The dining experience is an epicurean journey into gourmet cuisine. Six outdoor “Pods” are available to reserve at $3,000 apiece for the entire evening, with each seating groups of up to six people. The Chef de Cuisine for the night greets the group inside the Pod to discuss the specials of the day, but guests also have the option to choose from a menu provided by a chosen South Florida restaurant for that month, brought-in to collaborate with Miami Supercar Rooms. The group or couples can choose to dine in complete privacy or with an open Pod allowing for a view of the bar scene and DJ. In a city where fashion changes in the blink of an eye and everyone is looking for the latest and greatest, the luxury condo market is just as competitive. In order to keep pace with an onslaught of new projects, remain desirable and increase property values, several iconic Aventura condo communities are currently undertaking major modernization projects. More than 21 new condo buildings with more than 2,625 units have been announced for the Aventura market, according to The Real Deal, including the much-anticipated Aventura Place. Amicon Construction, a boutique firm in Miami with significant owner representation experience, has been chosen to spearhead three major renovation projects in Aventura, based on their experience working with condominium boards and for their work on luxury retail interiors for high-end fashion brands like Prada, Miu Miu, Chopard, Jason of Beverly Hills and Chrome Hearts. “Miami is a hyperkinetic residential real estate market. One year a new luxury condominium building is the latest and greatest and in 10 years it’s looking pretty dated and property values reflect that,” says Adam Mopsick, founder and CEO of Amicon Construction. “Largescale modernizations like the ones in Aventura, add amenities for the residents and help keep these properties on par with the newer condo offerings.”

THE POINT SPA The centerpiece of The Point of Aventura, a luxury waterfront condominium community comprised of five residential condominiums, the spa is being redone to include a new yoga wall and private full-service, beauty salon for members. The Point Spa currently includes his-and-hers spa and treatment facilities, a fully equipped cardio room, weight training room, an aerobics facility and the Point Place Café. ATLANTIC ONE AT THE POINT Late last year, Amicon began renovating the lobby and amenities of Atlantic One, one of the five residential condominium buildings at The Point of Aventura, to include a theater, library, business center, card room and a new package room re-designed by internationally recognized interior designer Fanny Haim, a ten-time winner of the “Designer of the Year” awards presented by Design Center of the Americas and Interior Design Guild. THE CAFÉ AT WILLIAMS ISLAND This renovation comes as part of the last phase of a three-phase, multimillion-dollar renaissance project that included an upgrade of the five-star, 27,000-squarefoot spa and fitness center (which was also executed by Amicon Construction in 2011) and is scheduled to be completed in the summer of 2016.

Exotica, Within Reach BELIEVE IT OR NOT, THAT’S THE 2016 MCLAREN 570S.

The dihedral doors say it all. Sweeping up and forward, bringing the mirror, the window and, if you’re not careful, the nearby valet with it, the doors announce your arrival as only a true supercar can. Except the 2016 McLaren 570S isn’t a supercar—at least, not officially. With a starting price of under $200K, the latest model from legendary British racecar-builder McLaren is billed as a mere sports car, à la the ubiquitous Porsche 911 Turbo, rather than an exotic, like Ferrari’s 488GTB. But much of what is underneath its sexy skin— and yes, behind those telltale doors—is the stuff of true exotica. Indeed, the 570S is no mere sports car. It’s an exotic car with a discount. Regular readers of this magazine may remember that we studied, drove and basically slobbered all over McLaren’s next-rung-up supercar, the 650S, in late 2014, and between the two cars, there’s a family resemblance that’s more than skin deep. Both cars are hand-built, use the same basic twin-turbocharged 3.8-liter V-8
mounted in exactly the same place (behind the passengers) and situate their passengers deep in a featherweight carbon-fiber “tub.” The main differences involve the 570S’s unique exterior design, 80 fewer metric horsepower (down from 650 to 570—hence their names) and conventional steel springs in place of the 650S’s more exotic air springs. Oh yeah, and the price: the 570S costs a rather more attainable $184,900, a huge $83K less than the 650S. While the creation of a lower-priced model necessitated a new design to set the cars apart, McLaren didn’t exactly design the 570S to look any cheaper or less lipsmackingly gorgeous. In fact, much of the 570S could

be considered even prettier than the 650S, particularly from behind, where the darktinted LED tail lamps follow the passionate contours of the rear haunches and the engine cover integrates elegantly with the black rear fascia. Up front, the 570S features deeply sculpted air vanes in the fascia and McLaren’s signature bird-like headlamps. Speaking of birds, the shape of the air intakes that streak through the 570S’s doors pay homage to the kiwi, another McLaren brand signature that recalls company founder Bruce McLaren’s New Zealand homeland. Only after locating the concealed pneumatic door button and swinging up the aforementioned dihedral doors is one granted access to the austere cabin. While the 570S is offered with lots of stitched leather and an outstanding Bowers and Wilkins sound system, no matter how much you load it up, you’ll never mistake it for a Bentley. Or even an Audi R8, for that matter. The 570S’s interior is more of a command center than a chamber of spoils, though it’s worth noting that McLaren did revise the “tub” design to make it easier to swing one’s legs inside—especially helpful for drivers who happen to be wearing a pencil skirt—and McLaren also made the cup holder more accessible. That said, installing oneself in the snug, thinly padded racing-style seats will remind you of the importance of a low-carb diet, and the fully electronic instrument cluster is all-business, changing configuration in concert with the driving mode. Press the engine start button on the lower console, grasp that small-diameter steering wheel and it all makes sense. The engine 88
rips to life and idles with a sharp staccato endemic to race-bred, small V-8s such as this. Forward motion commences once you press the “D” button on the console or tug the right steering wheel paddle. In Normal mode, all controls are calm and linear, but twist the adjustable powertrain and suspension mode selectors to Sport or Track modes, and prepare for a driving experience with an almost overwhelming amount of feedback. Power is explosive. Shifts become shockingly quick. All the while, the steering wheel tickles the fingers, turns are executed with razor-sharp deliberacy, and the brakes yank you down from speed with stupendous force. The 570S is an extremely lightweight car, and the immediacy with which it changes both direction and velocity in Track mode seem to defy physics, and yet, in Normal mode, the 570S is eminently drivable in traffic, which is more than many exotic cars—or even sports cars—can claim. To that end, McLaren expects that many 570S buyers will indeed drive them every day. We certainly would. Because, as it turns out, you can detune a McLaren, you can restyle a McLaren, and you can even lower the price of a McLaren. But at the end of the day, you’ve still got a McLaren.

In case you were living under a rock, here’s some not-so-new news: this past November, Joe Manganiello tied the knot with Modern Family actress Sofia Vergara at the The Breakers in Palm Beach. The wedding had a star-studded guest list that included Reese Witherspoon, Channing Tatum, Arnold Schwarzenegger and several cast members of Modern family, like Ed O’Neill, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Sarah Hyland, Ty Burrell, Eric Stonestreet and Julie Bowen. Pitbull put on a live performance, singing hits like “Give Me Everything” and “Fireball”. When it came to choosing the Breakers as the location for the wedding, Manganiello says, “[Sofia] loved that hotel. We went and visited and we just, you know, fell in love with it.” Manganiello—the embodiment of “tall, dark and handsome” and arguably, “strong and silent type,” is at the top of his game. He’s becoming the go-to choice for producers and directors seeking to cast an actor who is versatile, stout-hearted and

able to hold his ground in any role. He’s played a werewolf in True Blood, a DEA Agent in Sabotage, and, quite famously, a male stripper in Magic Mike and its sequel, Magic Mike XXL. For all these roles, Manganiello doesn’t train simply by memorizing lines; he also hits the gym like a competitive athlete preparing for the Olympics. For Sabotage, he put on 30 pounds of lean muscle. His biceps are about the size of an average newborn’s head, his six-pack—or, more accurately, eight-pack—looks like it was chiseled out of concrete with a jackhammer. In his book, Evolution: The Cutting-Edge Guide to Breaking Down Mental Walls and Building the Body You’ve Always Wanted, Manganiello goes into great detail about how he got into shape for the role. “I’ve been training with the same trainer for about seven years, his name is Ron Matthews. And I started training for True Blood. You know, I wanted the character to look a certain way, I wanted to get in the best shape of my life—I just saw the character that way. And we went to work, so those six weeks of workouts that are in the book, those are what I use to get in that kind of shape for True Blood.” But make no mistake, it’s not just his biceps and ripped abs that got him where he is today—Maganiello is a classically trained actor. He started his acting career early. “I started in high school,” he says. “I started writing, directing, producing and starring in films and TV shows that I made myself and cast all of my friends in.” But it was as a student of the Carnegie Mellon School of Drama where he underwent rigorous training in his art. “You act from 8 in the morning till midnight most days, five days out of the week,” he says. “Then you have rehearsals on Saturday, so that takes up all of your time. It’s a really thorough training program.” But the rigorous curriculum helped prepare and equip Manganiello to jump right into the role of Flash Thompson in Spider-Man after graduating. “I got out of college and signed with an agent and manager,” he recounts. “Right away, I was offered a TV deal—a TV holding deal that I turned down. Because, you know, you have to remember this was the year 2000, and in 2000 the film industry and the TV industry were segregated. You were a TV actor or you were a film actor. That was it. There was no, you know, cable TV as we know it today. The Sopranos had just started, so it hadn’t shifted and changed. So I turned down that TV deal, because I was going to do films, and then that week I was brought in to screen test for Sam Raimi for Spiderman, which I was eventually cast in.” After Spiderman, Manganiello went on to roles in several more TV shows, among them CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, Las Vegas, How I Met Your Mother and One Tree Hill. But it was his role in True Blood that really helped catapult his career. From there, he picked up the role as Davis in What to Expect When You’re Expecting and then Big Dick Richie in Magic Mike. On getting to look at the Magic Mike script, he says, “Soderbergh had just come off of The Girlfriend Experience and the first script certainly read that way. To me, it was really about the pitfalls of working in clubs, you know, or the nightlife industry—not necessarily stripping. Which I was no stranger to—I started working in bars and clubs when I was 16, so I understood that world and I liked what it was saying…or I thought, you know, it was an interesting story.” After Magic Mike, he picked up the role as Joseph “Grinder” Phillips in Sabotage with Arnold Schwarzenegger. In March, Manganiello will be staring in the Netflix movie Pee-wee’s Big Holiday, which is being produced by Judd Apatow and Paul Reubens. And there’s plenty more on the newlywed’s plate. “I’m playing the voice of Hefty Smurf in the new Smurfs movie,” he says. “And I have some producing projects. I just took a movie that I’m producing and starring in out to AFM and it looks like we found the financing, it looks like we are going to start filming that in late spring,” he explains. “I have a New York Times bestseller that I just adapted into screenplay form—my first screenplay— so we’re probably gonna do another draft and put a cast together for that,” he says. As to whether he thinks he’ll ever live in South Florida, Manganiello says, “I love Miami; I’ve always loved Miami. If I had a choice of where to live, I would live in South Florida,” he says. But everyone knows that L.A. is still Tinseltown. And with all he has on his plate right now with his company, his acting, and a blossoming producing career, right now, L.A. is his home. So even though we may not be bumping into “Joe-fia” at the local Whole Foods anytime soon, one can still hope. And in the meantime, take in his larger-than-life image on the silver screen.

odern technology is changing all of our lives, but one of the biggest differences has been felt in how we find romance. First came straight-out online dating, which some embraced while others screamed, “Not me!”, perceiving that only the lame resorted to looking for love that way. But these days, dating apps have become the most common way to meet a potential mate outside of an office romance or formal introduction. There are dozens of diverse dating apps available to enhance our love lives. They can be downloaded on our mobile phones and are available for use 24/7, attracting millions of users. According to statistics compiled by University of California at Berkeley and other research companies, one out of 20 Americans has used a dating app at least once, spending about 12 hours a week on the pursuit. Recent reports indicate there are more than 50 million active users of the popular hook-up app Tinder alone, where not even the lack of personal information about a potential partner stops active users from clicking on a pretty face from a posted photo, then having sex upon meeting. While 83 percent of millennials prefer instant gratification approaches to dating (or, arguably, most anything else, for that matter), about 5 percent of all dating apps users who are in a committed relationship or married actually met via dating apps. Such statistics indicate that dating apps bring value to their users and are here to stay. “Dating apps have been around for awhile. One of the first websites was
launched in 1995, but the mobile phone era put that market on steroids,” says Pierre-Olivier Carles, president of Digidust and a social media and digital marketing specialist in South Florida and France. “I’m not sure you can just decide you are going to find love today, but let’s say you can be ready…then it’s all about meeting the appropriate person.” So, how do you go about this? Well, for starters, you need to identify someone you feel you can get close to by providing your own basic information. Next, read other profiles and determine if there is a potential match. Dating apps can be icebreakers, as they allow the user to feel more comfortable and stronger from behind a screen than in an initial face-toface meeting. “Dating apps may not always bring you love, but they offer many good opportunities to find a compatible person to enjoy and feel comfortable with because of mutual interests,” says Carles, 45, who is married and the father of three children. “Mobile apps have come a long way and are often connected to Facebook and other social media. People are better users of dating apps now than they were before.” Not only have users become more sophisticated, so have app developers. They use semantic algorithm, a set of rules for solving a problem with calculations, especially with computers, and big data analytic technologies to help people find the right matches based on who they really are. A good matching engine is important for each dating app. Artificial intelligence is also helping participants find a potential mate. Dating app developers are investing millions of dollars to help you seek out Mr. or Miss Right. And romance seekers are responding. “All of my experiences with dating apps like Plenty of Fish (POF), Tinder and OkCupid have not yet found me an ideal mate, but they have helped me learn what kind of person I need in my life,” says Karen, 34, a business executive in Miami. “I have seen many success stories firsthand, so I know dating apps can and do work.” In recent months, with Tinder, Facebook and more than 15,000 dating sites and apps—some of which are free, some that charge—users may need to chill before they start seeking out their potential mates to avoid being overwhelmed with choices. According to online reports and other dating app resources, some of the top, tried-and-true dating sites and dating app options include Hinge (meet friends in your own social circle), Match (many
selections), Zoosk (popular features), Bumble (less sexually oriented than Tinder and more empowering because females initiate the conversation), J Date (Jewish singles), Christian Mingle (those seeking like values), Black People Meet (ways for African Americans to connect), Elite (smart folks seeking kindreds), Our Time (seniors seeking seniors), Coffee Meets Bagel (match with a friend of a friend), and Once (one match per day). Then there is Grouper, which organizes group dating; Tastebuds, for music lovers: Score, a well received game app promoting privacy; Happn, which shows up on your Timeline to help you rediscover people you have encountered before; Tindog, to meet fellow dog lovers; Pure, a discreet Uber for dating; Align, which allows astrology to decide; Fliqpic or At First Sight, offering video chats before meeting, and HighThere, for marijuana enthusiasts seeking other stoners. “There are days when I feel I will never meet anyone with even basic compatibilities,” says Lisa, an editor in Boca Raton who has experienced her share of click or treats. “Then there are other days when I have to choose because there are so many good options. It’s a roller coaster ride, and all could disappear taking me back to square one. I’m realistic yet dedicated to finding someone, because dating apps are the only option for me.” Some dating apps just launched or enhanced, get really creative and offer useful options for those who think out of the box. For example, SinglesAroundMe claims to be the world’s first locationbased mobile dating app and has 25,000 ratings giving it four to five stars. This app is different because its users can check in and see the location of other singles around them wherever they may be in the world. “Our unique mapping interface is unlike any other social networking dating app,” says Christopher Klotz, CEO and founder of SinglesAroundMe. “We ensure that the people that users see are real. Users have location privacy options where they can choose to show, hide and even shift their visible location by a few miles.” This app also provides users with a second chance to make a first impression and does not restrict the ability of people to contact each other. “We allow users to express their personalities first, before a photo predetermines what others may think of them,” says Klotz. Another dating app, WhoNow, which just launched in Miami, offers single

Through a secure app that protects its privacy, WhoNow allows users to choose their audience, ask for advice, anonymously give and get feedback, and hopefully become a better dater. “We don’t match or set people up for dates,” says Austin Cohen, creator and CEO of WhoNow. “We set them up for success. Dating is hard these days, and people are dating for different reasons. By asking for feedback and advice on your dating life, not only on the person who you are dating, but on what you are doing, you can have more successful relationships.” Lauren, a WhoNow user in Miami, likes the app because it offers honest feedback and quick response from her friends. She believes it’s a fun place to share your dating life without making it as serious as other social media platforms. “I think it’s really funny that my friends say certain things they otherwise 110
would not tell me if their comments were not anonymous,” she says. “I have actually taken a lot of the advice and incorporated it into my relationships.” SWEATT, another new dating app available in the Apple app store, is designed for confident, motivated fitness buffs. SWEATT’s algorithm matches the user’s lifestyle, including workout frequency and time of day. The fitness-centric lifestyle has exploded, and SWEATT incorporates unique features that speak to those who live it. “We bring together a community of like-minded people,” says founder Dan Ilani, who also created the newest sports league on ESPN. “SWEATT is good for users seeking others who love to stay fit and active.” And for the newly acquainted, the cool airtab app makes it easy to impress with instant options for cocktails, dinner and tickets to anywhere. “Mobile gifting has never been easier,” says airtab founder Dennis Cunningham, president and CEO
of Perfect Brands and Perfect Vodka. “You can gift anyone from anywhere through your smart phone. It’s a great way to start a new relationship.” Dating apps make it easy to find someone new if you are the type of person always searching for perfection with just one more click. But even for those who may fear the length of time it takes to meet one ideal mate, there is a great deal of good to note about dating apps. Users know that every app is as good as the value it brings to them. They want the app to be simple to use, secure and powerful, and most important, to act as a personal assistant for dating related to what they expect. “Consumers of dating apps are now much more responsible, because they are experienced and not afraid to admit they use them as was once the case,” says Carles. “Dating apps really try to address expectations based on who you are and what you are looking for. Then it’s all about the opportunities of meeting the right person.”

ITH ART FESTIVALS, boat and car shows, and (of course) the most beautiful weather of the year, February is always an exciting month for South Floridians and their visitors. But those who look forward to it the most are undeniably the epicures. That’s because the South Beach Wine and Food Festival (SOBEWFF®), Presented by Food & Wine, takes place during the last week in February. And by week, we do mean a good handful of calendar days. What was formerly a 2.5-day event when it began 15 years ago has now officially doubled in size, beginning Wednesday night this year and closing on Sunday night with “Lucky Chopsticks: An Asian Night Market” walk-around tasting on South Beach, hosted by Andrew Zimmern and fueled by Southern Wine & Spirits of Florida. Marking a change in ticketing procedures— usually tickets are sold through the sobe.com site only—this party is being offered solely by Groupon, meaning patrons can’t

Announcing an extended stay and exclusive partnerships are just two of the ways that SOBEWFF is celebrating its 15th anniversary (not to mention the 10th birthday of the signature Burger Bash,® hosted by Rachael Ray). Perhaps the most significant change is the inclusion of Fort Lauderdale in the culinary event line-up. For 2016, SOBEWFF introduces a new series, called Taste Fort Lauderdale, which begins on Wednesday, February 24, with a promising fete, Seaside Eats. Hosted by cookbook author and star of Food Network’s Restaurant: Impossible and
upcoming Chopped: Impossible, Robert Irvine, the tasting takes place at the lovely and historic venue Bonnet House Museum & Gardens, featuring bites from 15 of South Florida’s most widely recognized chefs and pours from Chateau D’Esclans and Marqués de Riscal. Festival founder and director Lee Brian Schrager, who also serves as vice president of corporate communications and national events for Southern Wine & Spirits of America, Inc., explains the reasoning behind both the crossing of county borders and the stretching of the time frame for the Festival. “The dinner that we did at S3
Restaurant last year, for the 2015 Festival, was certainly a way for us to see how the area responded to the Festival being [in Fort Lauderdale],” he says. “With the help of Tim Petrillo of The Restaurant People and the Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention & Visitors Bureau, we’re happy to be expanding on the success of last year’s event. Schrager is also eager to showcase the “Venice of America” as the gourmet treasure that it is—on its own evening, without competition. “We’re always on the lookout for ways to reach and engage a new audience, as well has highlight the growing culinary scene in South Florida,” he notes. “In the case of the Taste Fort Lauderdale Series, we wanted to kick it off in a special way—hence the additional night.” Naturally, there will always be a few northern Miami-Dade denizens who claim they don’t hold a Broward County visa and opt to stay in their own backyards. If that’s the case, they won’t even have to go to the Festival’s tents, which stretch between 10th & 13th streets off Ocean Drive, because a few events of interest are 120
taking place either in or near Aventura and the mid- to northern stretches of beach properties (see sidebar). It’s always a shame not to visit the main Festival set-up, however, because then it’s a miss on the Goya Foods Grand Tasting Village featuring MasterCard Grand Tasting Tents & KitchenAid® Culinary Demonstrations, which always prove tasty and satisfying, as well as returning events such as YogArt presents Buddhas & Bellinis, accompanied by Cavicchioli Prosecco, and the adorable Yappie Hour, hosted by Rachael Ray, with sips from Chateau La Paws™ Wines. Just remember that for the latter, dog owners are expected to clean after said pups, which must have all their shots—and not the alcoholic kind, either.

W When the design team for this 16th-floor residence at 1 Hotel & Homes South Beach accepted the commission, they knew that their job was to bring the glory of nature inside. The 3,000-square-foot penthouse apartment with two bedrooms, two baths and terrace overlooks the ocean and shines with a combination of expansive living/dining room and kitchen. The best way to capitalize on the beauty of the seaside setting was to bring nature inside of the space. “Our design team wanted to create a place that flows from room to room,” says Katia Silva, who with her husband, Luiz, is the US distributor for Saccaro, the Brazilian designer of the indoor and outdoor home furnishings that fill this residence. Founded in 1946 in Caxias do Sul, Brazil, Saccaro creates timeless, artisan pieces for the home. Their furniture collections reflect the lifestyle and landscapes of Brazil taking into account the country’s rich history. “We were inspired by the environment and nature and worked to bring it inside with much sophistication.” For this penthouse, which was completed a few months ago, the designers knew they had a fun interior to create. They were thrilled that every room faces the ocean. They used white, wood, suede and neutral organic pieces with blue accents reflecting the sea to make the unit stand out and emulate the outdoors. The floors are white porcelain; the ceilings are sky high. The result is a bright, open and airy residence that creates a natural elegance for Miami Beach

Since the dining area is small, the designers positioned the glass-topped dining table with wood base under the counter. “This was our solution for a formal dining table,” says Katia Silva.
For the master bedroom, the dominant 90-inch white linen headboard on the kingsize bed matches the material used on the sofa in the penthouseâ€™s living space. The table lamps are bleached and natural. All of the wood is eco-friendly, from the Brazilian forest.

The guest bedroom is cool and chic with a Carrera queen-size bed punctuated by a headboard of woven suede. The bed is covered with a seacolored throw. The chair features an aqua pillow also reminiscent of the ocean. The oil-on-canvas by Carmen Gusmao located above the bed picks up the colors of the room’s furnishings. The inset focuses on the fine Brazilian wood and white porcelain floor.
denizens—especially for those international travelers who want a turnkey option using the best and most modern, clean materials. “We used the finest natural fiber wallpaper for warmth throughout,” says Luiz, CEO of Saccaro USA. “And we furnished the residence with timeless mid-century pieces that added an element of coziness to the cool sophistication.” The furniture in the penthouse was made with locally sourced materials from expert Brazilian craftspeople. Neutral colors include cream, sand and hues of blue to reflect the sea. There are also driftwood accessories to carry the indoor-outdoor theme further. “There is no metal used, only wood,” says Katia. “We didn’t want a cold feeling; only warmth and organic concepts. This was very important, as it makes a huge difference in the finished product.” The challenges they faced in designing the residence were mostly involved with the floor. It was bright and shiny and off concept because it needed to be matte. But they worked with this issue, tweaking here and there, until the end result was perfect, offering the warm and bright feeling desired. Window coverings are notable, with white wood blinds, which were added to blend with the off-white linen drapery. Unique accessories from the around the world were selected from Saccaro’s Signature Home Accessory Collection. A standout is the grouping of decorative pillows and throws in shades of turquoise to further enhance the beachfront lifestyle. The penthouse is filled with fabulous art, including the wall photo of Lencois Maranhenses, a well-known Brazilian landmark and national park in the state of Maranhao. The sculpture Liana was crafted from a bleached natural woody vine found in the Madagascar Island rainforests. On the balcony overlooking the sea are outdoor FEBRUARY 2016
furnishings from the Roque Frizzo-designed collection Ayty, which were selected for their beauty, function and year-round durability. In the living-dining area—the ideal setting from which to drink in the ocean view—the designers opened the space with the La Paloma three-seat sofa. Named after the Uruguayan beach resort with calm waters and white, sandy beaches, the sofa is designed for comfort and relaxation. Adding more style and sophistication to this important space, the designers added the Lonca armchair, which is distinguished by the straight lines of the Sucupira hardwood frame and pergamine leather side panel. The geometric Mondrian coffee table made of a toasty, rich chocolate brown suede surface was handsewn with a double stitch pattern and subtle contrast thread. The Arena media unit was uniquely crafted from Jequitiba (Brazilian) wood. Saccaro’s neutral cowhide rug accents the Brazilian porcelain flooring by Portobello. The dining section is created around the contemporary Roque Frizzo-designed Canavial dining table, which was inspired by the angles and colors of the cane fields in Brazil. Dinner guests can enjoy the lovely Ana Capri chairs and the driftwood-inspired centerpiece on the table. But the tiny area presented some challenges for the design team, who needed to make the most of its limited space. “The dining area is small, so we positioned the table under the counter and found it to be a good solution for a formal dining setting,” says Katia. The custom kitchen adds a third layer to the “great room” style of the open living space. It has built-in lighting, stainless steel appliances by Sub Zero and Bosch, white quartz counters, porcelain
backsplashes and elegant cabinets. It was designed to complement the living and dining area and make everything seem like one giant space holding no secrets. The two bedrooms—one master and another for guests—are designed around the beds. The Trienalle king-size bed in the master features an off-white, 90-inch headboard; the second bedroom houses a Carrera queen-size. Both rooms have cowhide throw rugs and beach-inspired accent pieces, like the Woodstock 3 lamp with its base reminiscent of a graceful twist of driftwood, keeping the theme intact. In the end, this penthouse is ideal for the person who wants to live well and enjoy the merits of the ocean. The development, which was once The Perry South Beach built in the 1960s, attracts people from around the world who enjoy nature and want to indulge in a lifestyle that includes the beach. “This design is all about wellness with a welcoming decor,” says Katia. “People appreciate this kind of clean living taking advantage of the beauty of the ocean and the lull of the breezes. We are smoke-free, and the building’s restaurant serves organic food. Everything follows the same healthy pattern as Saccaro.” Natural, organic, clean and calm—Miami Beach living at its finest.

For years now, the arts scene in this “blooming” city of Miami has been exploding at breakneck speed. Even if you’re up on it, there’s plenty you can discover—because in addition to the areas that have been (and continue to be) hyped in the media (both traditional and social), there are always still more spots that you don’t know about, but, as a bona fide arts enthusiast, should. And the excitement surrounding this collective arts scene is no longer limited to the season preceding Art Basel Miami Beach; oh, no—it goes on and on year-round, kind of like our now-endless tourist season. If it seems overwhelming, start by taking an arts walk. Or two. Per week. Or however many you can manage, because truth be told, the options just continue to grow along with the city. And it doesn’t matter what part of town you’re in, what’s closest or most convenient to you, because they are everywhere. Herewith is a sampling, to get you started. And as always in this city of excesses when it comes to pleasure, there are more where these came from.

One of the longeststanding art walks takes place the first Friday of every month in Coral Gables. Veteran gallerist Virginia Miller who has headed the Coral Gables Gallery Association for more than 20 years, told the Herald last year that Gables Gallery Night carved its niche in the 1990s by providing a gateway to Cuban and Latin American art. Today the association provides a continuous minibus shuttle among more than 24 galleries from 6 pm to 10 pm. In Little Havana, Viernes Culturales (Cultural Fridays) includes an art fair, a free, historianled tour of the district, salsa dancing, musical acts, shopping, domino competitions and Latin food. In October 2015, Viernes Culturales executive director Pati Vargas introduced a monthly Little Havana Art Walk featuring 25-plus galleries concentrated in the Futurama Building and nearby blocks, among them Santos Fine Art, Galeria Adelmo, El Fresco Art Space, Art Emporium and Didi Marchi Studio. The Bird Road Art District between Coral Gables and South Miami, which is home to about 40 artist studios and two notable art schools, was designated an official art district by the county a dozen years go, but its monthly art walk has been around just a little more than two years as of last October. The number of those coming out to participate in the art walks has been rising, along with the number of artists working in the neighborhood, which went from 18 to about 40 last year. Media includes painting, sculpture, glass blowing and installations. Among the highlights are demonstrations by artists including Federico Scipioni, who puts an innovative spin on stained glass, and portraiture by Abdon Romero, who gives a three-hour painting and drawing class for $20 (including cocktails and hors d’oeuvres) at the Drawing Lounge.
Because Brickell is more about high-rises than art galleries, the creators of Brickell Art Walk got in on the craze just last summer by arranging for local artists to bring their work to the district’s restaurants and other venues on the last Tuesday of the month from 5:30 pm to 10:30 pm. “The idea is to help the artists sell their work and to support Mary Brickell Village by injecting some art into the heart of where a lot of young professionals live,” Felipe Garcia, the event’s executive director, explained upon announcing the regular event. WYNWOOD ART WALK & MIAMI DESIGN DISTRICT ART+DESIGN NIGHT/GALLERY WALK SECOND SATURDAY OF EVERY MONTH
This monthly event has become somewhat of a phenomenon in the Wynwood Arts District and the Miami Design District. With more than 50 galleries and celebrated private-collection museums, Wynwood has established itself as Miami’s epicenter of the cutting edge and avantgarde. Here, a number of galleries open early on Art Walk day to make their art available to those who filter in hours before the walk starts (it runs from 7 pm to 10 pm). Just to the north, the Design District Art Walk offers, in addition to the actual art, city blocks of high-end design houses, upscale fashion boutiques and trendy dining spots. The busiest area is amid the galleries clustered between NW 2nd Ave. and NW 23st St., but don’t miss the famous Wynwood Walls.

The room looks decadently familiar, like a movie set, with a sexy sunken bar, Sputnik lighting, mid-century modern banquet sofas in aquamarines, and walnut table planks flanked by that perfectly shiny white lacquer Stanley Kubrick dreamed about in 2001. Like the decor, the food is a case study in meticulous vision and execution, nodding to tradition but brand spanking new, too. Groundbreaking took place in September 2015, with completion plans set for the second quarter of 2018. So far, locals and Latin American buyers are showing great interest in the property because they want a connection to Miami’s major centers, yet prefer to be a little out of the main flow. The project’s architect is award-winning Arquitectonica, with interior design by the equally prominent Rockwell Group, who will do the lobby, common areas and hotel suites—but not the condo interiors. The condos will have an open layout for ease of access and movement from one room to the other, nine-foot-high ceilings (11 feet in the penthouses) and spacious walk-in closets and terraces. Kitchens will be outfitted with European cabinets, quartz countertops, optional backsplashes, stainless steel dishwashers, oversized zero-radius square-edge sinks, glass cooktops with 17 settings, cabinet-concealed range hoods and large-capacity stackable washer-dryers. Bathrooms are being designed with roomy soaking tubs and frameless glass-enclosed showers in select units. Hyde Midtown is uniquely positioned within Miami’s Design District, Wynwood and Midtown. These three emerging neighborhoods are flourishing centers of art, design and culture attracting the A-list from each category, so it’s no surprise that the hotel suites were inspired by the bold style of art galleries and high-end fashion stores. “We felt it was important that Hyde Midtown’s public spaces and guest rooms reflect their surroundings,” says David Rockwell. “So our concept is based on the the notion of new luxury, an eclectic, edgy mix of raw and finished materials, contrasting colors and handcrafted design elements.” The guest rooms are spread over six floors and offer split living and sleeping areas separated by a barn door of American white oak. Custom headboards upholstered in black cotton with yellow leather accents give it a chic edge; concrete floors and exposed concrete ceilings, custom carpets and archival prints by Brooklyn artist Samantha French finish it off with custom kitchens offering an island for dining and working. The lobby is based on the concept of an art hotel, with concrete floors, exposed concrete ceilings and blackened metalwork. In addition to a white grand piano and reception desk, there will
be an interactive geometric pattern projected onto the ceiling to remind guests of Miami’s Art Deco appeal. And Related Group Chairman and CEO Jorge Perez is set to showcase some pieces from his world famous contemporary art collection. “Our ideal hotel guest is looking for an urban feel close to everything Miami has to offer,” says Rossi. One of the best aspects of buying in this residence is the long list of exclusive amenities offered. From VIP access to South Beach’s Hyde Beach at SLS Hotel to Hyde Midtown’s children’s playroom, private screening center and amazing views of the water and city, there’s a lot to like. “People want to live and vacation here and be part of the transformation of a great city,” Rossi reasons. “Once completed, this project will have such a presence that Midtown will essentially be synonymous with Hyde.”
