EvEn though wE havE a tEndEncy to bEmoan thE passing of another year, at the same time we all tend to perk up as the holidays approach. they do seem to come earlier and earlier— partially, I think, because the tv ads and retail displays start popping up right around halloween now. but it’s still uplifting to hear the music, see the colored lights, smell the pine-scented candles and sip the cinnamon lattes as we contemplate how to celebrate with our friends and loved ones. and what to buy them, of course. at Aventura, we prepare our major holiday gift guide for the november issue just so that you’ll have plenty of time to plan and shop without having to endure the madding crowds and worries about shipping delays from online retailers. but there are always going to be those last-minute lolligaggers who are still racking their brains a few days before the big day, and for them we produce our second guide, which appears in this issue. In “the Final countdown” you’ll find a few options for him, for her, for kids and for stockings, starting on page 192. once the gifts have been exchanged and unwrapped and the champagne’s been popped and the ball has dropped, it’s time to greet a brand new year. and the shopping doesn’t stop because the holidays are over; on the contrary, January starts an entirely new cycle of buying, starting with the post-holiday sales. Artist Hugo França (pronounced fɾránsa) will debut his designs at Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden from December 1st through May 31st, 2014, in conjunction with Art Basel 2013 and the Garden’s 2013-14 season of Design at Fairchild, part of the annual Art at Fairchild exhibitions held there. Originally from Brazil, França uses all natural materials to create sustainable design pieces, often tables and seating, made of reclaimed wood from felled, burned or dead trees found in Brazil. While developing his artistic technique, França lived with the indigenous people in a jungle in Bahia (a state in northeastern Brazil), where he learned unique woodworking techniques, in which he accentuates the natural qualities of his materials rather than masking them. Daniel Oberti discovered his passion early in life and went on to design some of the world’s most exclusive eyewear.
Daniel Oberti began his stOrieD career in 1981 as a 23-year-old salesperson with Miami eyewear purveyor crystal du Monde. “that’s when i realized i had found my passion in life,” says argentina-born Oberti, who had arrived in the U.s. three years earlier at the age of 20. after immersing himself in every aspect of the business, Oberti opened his retail store on n.e. 163rd street in north Miami beach in 1990. he quickly built it into one of the largest eyewear boutiques in south Florida by selling the world’s most exclusive lines of eyewear to an affluent and design-conscious clientele. in 1998, he attended an industry trade show in Milan, italy, that changed his life; that’s when he decided to become a designer and manufacturer. after a follow-up trip to luxembourg to meet with a major manufacturer, Oberti returned to the U.s. with backing for his first collection. he also became the head of the U.s. division of the trend-setting new gold & Wood brand. in his debut at the 1999 Vision expo in new York city, Oberti and his new partner created a sensation and sold 500,000 pairs of eyeglasses.
in 2005, he created his own Oberti collection and started selling his designs in his Miami store. Meanwhile, leading eyewear retailers around the world also began peddling the trend-setting line. One of the key factors that made Oberti so successful so quickly was his realization that eyewear would become the last frontier of fashion, as clothing—even from major designers —became more and more similar rather than unique. Oberti intuitively understood that eyewear would emerge as the only genuine means to make an individual fashion statement. as a result, although virtually all manufacturing had migrated to asia by then, Oberti elected to manufacture his glasses in fashion-forward, design-sensitive italy and Japan from the finest available raw materials. and his designs would soon attract the attention of celebrities such as Kanye West, who sported a pair of “shutter design” Oberti glasses in one of his most famous music videos. since then, Oberti has continued his innovations, with now trendy “3D” temples, as well as strongly established wood temples and titanium glasses. among his other recent creations is a “buffalo horn” temple. in early 2014, he will expand his empire with an Oberti gold & Diamonds jewelry collection to be sold by leading retailers around the world. and in the meantime, he has taken his commitment to uniquely fashionable eyewear to a new level. “What i do that not many designers in the industry do right now is the customization of lenses, because i believe that in any piece of eyewear, the lenses are as important as the frame,” he says. “so we now customize lenses for regular glasses and sunglasses.” that means truly individualized eyeglass designs based on personal ideas or tastes that he faithfully executes. “if a customer comes to my store and says, ‘this is the lens and frame design i want,’ i will do exactly as he or she asks,” he asks. “that is another thing that makes us unique.” his latest creation, introduced in October, is shockabsorbing eyewear for skiers, boaters and other active adventurers. they feature an innovative locking system that secures the temples to the wearer’s head. given his powerful creative motivation, Oberti has been able to sustain and build upon his success for almost 25 years. “i am a very spiritual person, and when i first started working as a salesperson at crystal Du Monde, my spirit moved me to develop a real passion for eyewear,” he says. “i knew that it was what i wanted to do as a business. and i knew that i wanted to do it as well as it had ever been done. i wanted to become the best, because i knew it was what i wanted to do for the rest of my life.” and by aggressively and creatively exploiting that opportunity, he built one of the most successful eyewear collections in the world. For example, integrated systems that include outdoor lighting sensors can ensure that lights always go on at the proper time whether someone in at home or not, and that pathways are always well lit. those things not only protect homes from intruders, they also greatly decrease the chances of personal injury.” In addition, tyulina explains, the latest apps for iPhone, iPads and android devices can enable most advanced technologies to indicate whether doors are locked or unlocked or if a garage door is left open. “By having the power to assure the security of a home, it’s possible to have peace of mind when traveling,” says tyulina, adding that systems can also control air conditioning and heating for optimal year-round comfort. “and in my experience, that is just something that women are naturally more interested in. so when it comes to home technology, it is the men who usually pay for it, but beyond that, they don’t really care. So if something goes wrong, you have no protection.” another current concern is the quality and integrity of diamonds. it is not uncommon these days for an uninformed buyer to be sold an inferior diamond. “People get the wool pulled over their eyes all the time now,” King cautions, “if they don’t know what they’re buying and who they’re buying it from.” King also creates custom jewelry. “we have several in-house designers,” maxine says. “and the entire process is done by hand, starting with a wax mold. that means you can see the progression of your piece from the idea stage until the design comes to fruition. we also have our own diamond setters and master jewelers and our own watchmakers. everything is done on our premises by very skilled, experienced people.” when all of its capabilities and experience are added up, King says, it’s not at all surprising that the company has survived for more than a century. and its legacy will be passed on to the next generation of proprietors, sons david and Jonathan. Big Boom Real estate continues to command higher prices in South Florida, and there’s no end in sight, thanks to a global market of buyers who are happy to pay.
“MiaMi is starting to look like new York, at least in terms of what buyers are paying per square foot of prime real estate,” says Denise rubin, principal of Denise rubin group in aventura, which was recently acquired by warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway Home services. “the reasons fueling Miami’s prices today are the same ones that launched Manhattan’s meteoric rise so long ago: Miami has grown in prestige as a world city amid an influx of international cash, which lifts the prices. Five million to $10 million is not considered expensive anymore for a home in Miami Beach.” 76
rubin says two-thirds of all home and condo sales close in Miami, aventura and sunny isles without financing from a lender; six years ago, only a fifth of sales were all cash. “there is another level of buyer in the market,” she says. “However, banks are finally lending again, although requirements are much tighter.” in the last 18 months, there have been record-breaking sales in Miami, with homes going for $38 million and $47 million in indian Creek and for $30 million in la gorce island. the über-contemporary home of luca Fendi was purchased two years ago for $5.52 million, and now the 8,030-squarefoot home set a record in Venetian island for $14 million. apogee south Beach set a new price record for non-oceanfront in Miami-Dade County when a 4,154-square-foot unit sold for $12.4 million—that metes out to $2,985 per square foot. a property on north Bay road set a price record at $30 million, and Brickell reached a new high when a european tennis player paid $1,500 per square foot. rubin says every sale she’s made in aventura over the past year has set price records, and adds, “there will soon be a new all-time high paid in aventura when a pending sale i have closes for $812 a square foot. this will surpass the last two highest sales of $760 a square foot.” rubin is excited about the new projects underway, as well. “new construction is booming, with 85 projects signed off on and 45 waiting for approval,” she says. “Construction crews are busy now working on 34 of them.” she cites the top projects as being located in Miami Beach, sunny isles Beach, key Biscayne and Bal Harbour. and in addition to the flood of south american buyers we’ve been seeing over the past couple of years now, more and more are coming from europe and asia. “they have cash and they’re spending it,” rubin says. and that can only be positive for the city’s economy. Then there is J. Lo the entrepreneur; her lifestyle brand, J. Lo by Jennifer Lopez, started out with a clothing launch in 1998 that eventually evolved into Sweetface Fashion— the brand is no longer in business—and ultimately peaked with her foray into fragrances. The first one, Glow by J. Lo, debuted in 2002 and brought in $40 million internationally, sparking a continuing line of successful scents over the next 11 years that included one called Miami Glow, Deseo, Live Platinum, My Glow, Blue Glow, Love and Glamour, Love & Light, Glowing, and most recently, JLove. And now she’s returned to her gig as a judge for the 13th season of American Idol, which returns to the air in January,
after taking off a season to tour the world. “I love this show and I’m glad to be back,” Lopez told People magazine. “It wasn’t the easiest thing to fit in this season of Idol, but I love it so much…I did miss it.” Alongside her at the judging table will be Keith Urban and Harry Connick Jr., making for a well-rounded panel. While the show’s producers are hoping for an uptick in the ratings after Season 12’s lessthan-stellar response to the Randy Jackson, Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj trio of judges, Lopez says she’s all about the contestants, not ratings. “I don’t think about that kind of stuff so much,” she says. “I leave that worry to other people. What worries she’s referring to are anyone’s guess, but La Lopez certainly has had plenty of ups and downs over the past few years, including a muchpublicized though low-drama divorce from her husband, the singer Marc Anthony, the father of her 5-year-old twins, Max and Emme. ‘When Marc and I decided to separate, I thought, “I’m not going to let this turn me into someone unhopeful who doesn’t believe [in love] anymore,” she told London’s The Telegraph. “I didn’t want to just survive it. I wanted to grow from it. And I did learn a lot. Most importantly, to love myself first. As women, I don’t think we do 96
that enough. We always love somebody else more than ourselves. I did that for a long time and I couldn’t understand why things weren’t working. Then I realized that I wasn’t valuing myself in the way that I deserved. You accept things that are less than what you want, and then you wonder why you find yourself in these situations. You think, ‘I wouldn’t treat anyone in this way so why am I being treated like this?’ Why can’t I find somebody who treat me the way that I treat them?’” It was Lopez’s third divorce, and shortly thereafter, she embarked on a new relationship with dancer and choreographer Casper Smart.

After a string of failed romances and marriages, however, Lopez is anything but negative about love; in fact, she’s learned plenty from the pain of her experiences and grown from it. “Before, I was just going through life,” she’s said. “Now I live in the moment and I appreciate things in a different way.” That, and she’s been imbued with a new sense of confidence that comes with survival and age. “Every major actress right now is in her 40s,” she told The Telegraph. “The new crop hasn’t really come up in the same way, and it’s the same with recording artists, too. In old Hollywood, by the time you were 28 you were over; it was so youth driven. Now people realize how much better women get with experience and wisdom. It’s a very ‘woman’ moment.” That doesn’t mean she hasn’t had to overcome her share of fears and insecurities—and not all have had to do with her personal life. There have been, as unbelievable as it may seem, self-esteem issues to do with her body along the way, but the maturity and wisdom that seem to come with having children have helped her put those in perspective. “I have days when I think I look great and days when I think I look crap,” she’s said. “But when you have kids, it’s just about pressing on, no matter how you feel.” There has also been self-doubt about her singing, something she credits her ex-husband Anthony with helping her conquer. “While I was married to Marc, he helped me get over it. He kept telling me, ‘You’re the only one holding yourself back from reaching your full potential as a singer. You have to let go. I was always so insecure and just kind of going along. Then I grew, little by little, and realized, wait a minute, This is not a fluke. I’m not a mistake—I work my ass off. And I know what I’m doing.” Still, she admits, she’s still not entirely fearless. “I’m usually a little bit afraid, but I don’t ever let that take over,” Lopez told Redbook magazine. “I think when there is a sense of fear, it motivates me. Usually I’m able to tell myself, ‘Screw it, I’m just going to do this.’ And then that’s it, I’ve done it, and if it was 100 percent a success, that’s great, and if not, that’s OK too because I still did it. I don’t do regrets. But I am a perfectionist, so I’m always re-evaluating and re-analyzing so I can make whatever it was better for the next time.” But no matter how much success Lopez continues to enjoy—onstage, behind the scenes, as a businesswoman—motherhood is her “favorite thing”, she says. It’s also the scariest thing. “But it brings me so much joy. I think about being a performer and having all these amazing moments on stage and movie sets. Still nothing matches the joy I get from coming off stage and having my kids waiting there in the wings. That’s when my two worlds collide and I feel whole.” And while she admits that she does want to grow old with someone eventually, right now, she’s happy hanging with the kids and her family. “That’s when I feel myself again,” she has said. “That’s when I really remember who I am.”

Opening of Wynwood Block
Wynwood Block, which takes up a whole city block on NW Second Avenue between 26th and 27th streets, has officially announced its presence. And in keeping with Craig Robins of DACRA Development’s statement that the area is “not the Disney model,” the shops coming in will be mostly if not all independent brands rather than national chains. Arquitectonica is designing the project, expected to house jewelry and clothing boutiques, cafes and eateries, home décor stores and coffee shops. Super Bowl XLVIII

Sochi 2014 Olympics
The 2014 Olympic Winter Games taking place Feb. 7th-23rd will be the first time ever hosted by the Russian Federation (the Soviet Union hosted the 1980 Summer Games in Moscow). Organized in two clusters—a coastal cluster for ice events in Sochi, and a mountain cluster located in the Krasnaya Polyana Mountains—this will be one of the most compact Games ever, with around 30 minutes travel time from the coastal to mountain cluster. The Sochi Olympic Park will be built along the Black Sea coast in the Imeretinskaya Valley, where all the ice venues such as the Bolshoi Ice Palace, the Maly Ice Palace, the Olympic Oval, the Sochi Olympic Skating Centre, the Olympic Curling Centre, the Central Stadium, the Main Olympic Village and the International Broadcast Centre and Main Press Centre, will be newly built for the 2014 Games. H&M Opening at Miami International Mall

Miami Design District’s New Mixed-use Building by Sou Fujimoto
Sou Fujimoto has been commissioned to realize a facade for a more than 17,000-square-foot square-foot mixed-use retail building in the Miami Design District’s Palm Court. The Japanese architect is creating a pedestrian gallery composed of vertical glass panels in hues of blue that are a reference to aquatic activity, such as hurricanes, that the coastal city is prone to experiencing. Fujimoto’s design is a visual metaphor of a waterfall, and promises to bring more visual excitement to the burgeoning area.

IKEA Opening in Sweetwater Summer 2014
The newest South Florida IKEA store, which will be the Swedish retailer’s fourth and largest in the state, is set to open in the summer of 2014. The new IKEA Miami, as it will be called, will sit on nearly 15 acres adjacent to the Dolphin Mall, near the intersection of the Florida Turnpike and the Dolphin Expressway (SR 836) in Sweetwater.
Miami Spice Month
Even those who think nothing of dropping a few C-notes on dinner in one of Miami’s hottest restos look forward to Miami Spice every year, when participating eateries offer three-course lunches and dinners at a low set price (lunches run between $19 and $23 and dinners range from $33 to $39). These aren’t ordinary meals, but repasts from such lauded dining rooms as those at The Forge, Makoto, and Gotham, among dozens of others.
Ian Schrager’s Edition Hotel
Everybody looks forward to an Ian Schrager project, and that includes his upcoming Edition Hotel, especially since the celebrated hotelier revealed to the Miami Herald that the Edition will have a nightclub, bowling alley and ice skating rink. Located on the site of the old Seville Beach hotel at 2901 Collins Ave., the Miami Beach Edition is slated to open in first quarter 2014 with its top two floors housing 26 high-end residences. Tom Colicchio’s New Restaurant at 1 Hotel & Residences
Top Chef judge, chef and restaurateur Tom Colicchio is the latest in a line of celebrity chefs to launch a signature restaurant concept in Miami. Located in the space formerly known as the Gansevoort South and The Perry, 1 Hotel & Residences has been taken over by Starwood Capital’s Barry Sternlicht, along with Richard LeFrak of the LeFrak Organization and Invesco, and the team has infused over $150 million in renovations, which are expected to be unveiled sometime in May 2014. Colicchio already has restaurants in New York City, Bridgehampton, Las Vegas, Los Angeles and Foxwoods, CT. With his latest projects consisting of Heritage Steak in Las Vegas (his second in Sin City) and the chi-chi Topping Rose House in Bridgehampton (the only 5-star hotel in the Hamptons), Colicchio has finally decided to expand his empire down south to Miami. There’s a right time for everything, including when to make specific purchases.
JANUARY Gym memberships. Time to follow up on your New Year’s resolution to get rid of that postholiday bloat, so the fitness clubs are making deals all over the place.
Furniture. Like fashion, it has “seasons,” and the new stuff comes out in February, so look for unsold inventory to go on sale this month.
Wrapping paper and other Christmas decorations. Obviously, with the holidays over, the stores want to clear these out, so they’re marked down considerably—it’s the perfect time to stock up.
Video games. The most anticipated games come out in late October and November each year, so by now you can pick up barely used versions at a fraction of the cost for Xbox and Playstation.
Air conditioners. Once the heat of summer (or in South Florida’s case, late winter/early Spring) is back, you’ll have to pay an arm and a leg to replace that old relic you’ve got now, so while the temps are still fresh, shop for a new unit. 130
Linens. January is “white sales” month, so replace your worn out sheets, pillows, comforters and quilts.
Electronics. New ones unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Shows start to hit shelves in January, so by February, older models get discounted by retailers who want to move them out. (Caveat: Digital cameras aren’t included in this category; promotions and deals on those are typically more attractive in November and December, leading up to Christmas.)
FEBRUARY Jewelry. Now that the winter holidays and Valentine’s Day—when the prices are typically jacked up—is over, the time to scoop up those baubles on sale. Boats. It’s boat show season not just in Miami Beach, but all the way up to Massachusetts, which means it’s also the best opportunity you’re likely to have to successfully negotiate the price of your dream boat.
Winter Coats. Even though it’s technically still winter, the stores are bringing in their Spring items and red-lining cold-weather wear to clear it out—sometimes up to 50 percent off the original price.
Frozen foods. It’s National Frozen Food Month, which means lots of two- and three-for deals and coupons are available.
Exercise equipment. Going toward the outdoor season, indoor workout items like treadmills and stairclimbers get discounted. Since summer here is rainy season, it’s good to have a backup plan in your garage.
Luggage. This is the month that bridges holiday and ski travel with summer vacation travel, so not a lot is happening. That inspires luggage manufacturers and stores to offer sales and markdowns, both in store and online.
Jewelry. The holidays and post-Valentine’s Day rush are done, meaning a slowdown for jewelers—but it’s only temporary, since Mother’s Day is just a couple months away, so scope out your bargains now.
Vacuum cleaners. New models are released every June, so this month, the older ones go on sale. Suck ‘em up.
Tires and auto parts. April is actually National Car Care Month, so this is when you’ll probably start getting those mailers offering deals on oil changes, service, tire rotation and even buy-three-get-one-tire free.
Athletic shoes. Sneaker sales slow down during the winter months, according to savings expert Jeanette Pavini of Coupons.com, but in the spring retailers push them, offering promotions and discounts as the weather warms up.
Mattresses. The new ones arrive in stores, so you can get good deals on the previous year’s models. According to Money magazine, Sears hit about 60 percent off regular mattress prices after all discounts were applied in May.
Travel. Cruise packages to the Caribbean in particular are a good buy during the month of June, since hurricane season starts on June 1st.
Home goods and apparel. This is due in large part to the ubiquitous Memorial Day Weekend sales that sweep the department stores as well as chains like Pottery Barn, West Elm, Crate and Barrel and the like. Memorial Day Weekend sales are known as some of the best of the year, offering the best buys on just about everything from clothing to home décor.
Stuff for guys. It’s Father’s Day month, so retailers wooing you to purchase your gifts from them often offer promotions and discounts on everything from neckties to dress shirts to gadgets and tools.
Grills. The guys at dealnews.com advise you to buy now, because you can save $100 or more by doing so. You may be able to save more if you wait until the end of summer, but for South Floridians, summertime is all about grilling, so if yours is on the fritz or just old, bite the bullet and get it done.
Summer Clothing. This is when it gets deeply discounted, because— believe it or not—it’s also when the new Fall/Winter items hit stores, including boots, jackets, and the like. And here in South Florida, we can wear shorts, tees and sandals well into the Fall (and even winter).
Outdoor furniture. Not everywhere, but some places mark down patio seating and tables, umbrellas and chaises in time for July 4th barbecues, then slash prices again toward the end of the month when it gets closer to back-to-school time.
Computers. It’s back-to-school time, so electronics stores are banking on the idea that you’re in the market for a new laptop or desktop for the student in your house. Grab one now on sale, along with an updated piece of hardware for yourself.
Belts, scarves and accessories. According to CBS News, based on last year’s online sales data, the ShopItToMe online personal shopping service found belts, scarves and other fashion accessories reached their lowest price points in August. Online discounts averaged 52 percent off compared with an average of 47 percent off the rest of the year.
Swimwear. With the Fall fashions hitting the stores in July, swimwear— especially pricey designer swimwear and coverups—gets deeply discounted. Even mid- to lower-priced offerings from places like Victoria’s Secret are offered at irresistible prices. Caribbean vacations. Trips to island destinations such as Jamaica, Bermuda and the Bahamas are on sale again, with hurricane season underway—just make sure to purchase travel insurance if you book, because if the weather intrudes on your trip, you won’t want to have to eat the cost of the tickets.
Cars. Again, the next calendar year’s models flood the lots, so great deals can be had on those from the current year.
Home appliances. The new models come in this month and next, so the ones that were already in stock get discounted. Tip: Check out the holiday weekend sales, like Labor Day and Columbus Day.
OCTOBER Toys and games. The hottest items that are about to show up on the kids’ Christmas lists are still in stores and often marked down, so it’s just another reason (other than the top two— beating the holiday crush, and risking them being completely MIA come Black Friday) to get out there and scoop them up.
NOVEMBER TVs. Although these go on and off sale all year, the period before Christmas (what an awesome gift!) and the Super Bowl is the prime time to pick up that new gigantic flat screen you’ve been coveting.
DECEMBER Champagne and wine. With holiday soirees (and of course, New Year’s Eve toasts) coming up, there’s more of a demand for these items, and yet they end up getting priced lower instead of higher for that very reason. Cheers!
Golf clubs and accessories. They’re marked down because of the non-golf-friendly weather around most of the country, so either stock up or grab a bunch of gifts for the golfer in your life.
Backyard grills. If you didn’t grab one earlier in the year when we told you to, now’s the time—it’s off-season for grilling, so the deals are plentiful.

For Nic Roldan, polo is not just a sport—it’s what life is all about.
By Linda Marx Riding hoRses at age 2, swinging a mallet two years later, and turning pro at 14, nicolas “nic” Roldan has lived his 31 years immersed in the world of polo. Born in Buenos aires, argentina, and raised in wellington, he comes by the sport naturally. his grandfather enjoyed the adrenaline-charged game for many years, and his father was a pro who played for the sultan of Brunei’s team. Raul Roldan remembers seeing his baby son come to the barn with excitement in his eyes. the little guy could barely walk yet would stand for hours watching the players ride horses. “i let nic ride early on by leaving him in the paddock,” says his dad. “every time he would ride and fall off a horse, he would climb up the side of the fence and jump right back on. after that, he was out there almost every morning. i gave him a light mallet, and he started hitting the ball around bareback. that’s how it all started.” Roldan, an impressive eight-goal player who has an insatiable passion for the outdoors, admits that he has played polo for so long that it commands much of his life—and he would have it no other way. “i have played for many years in exciting places around the world,” he says. “i love the speed and intensity of the sport. it’s in my blood.”

In November, Roldan’s Audi team won the United States Polo Assn.’s (USPA) North American Cup at the Grand Champions Polo Club in Lake Worth. From December 16th-20th, he plays Aspen Polo, a wild and wet ride in the glistening snow. Then, on January 5th, he’ll begin the important 2014 winter polo season at International Polo Club Palm Beach in Wellington, playing on the Audi team. “We are honored to host a player of Nic’s caliber,” says John Walsh, president of club operations at International Polo Club Palm Beach. “Not only is he one of the world’s top polo players, he has always been a crowd favorite and sets the gold standard when it comes to being a stand-up guy.” For these reasons, the polo club’s marketing team selected Roldan to teach reality TV stars Kourtney and Khloe Kardashian how to ride polo ponies for a segment of their E! show, Kourtney and Khloe Take Miami, three years ago. The show was filmed two hours before a Sunday polo match and aired as a half-hour program.
Miami Beach is a great social experience.Having a polo event there helps bring recognition to the sport. Recently, Roldan has taken a trip around the world thanks to the sport of polo. He played in England’s Westchester Cup (USA vs. UK), Super Nations Cup in Tianjin, China (“I had such a blast!”), and Rally for Kids with Cancer in Toronto (a pet charity of actress/activist Eva Longoria’s, who has enjoyed a texting relationship with Roldan since they met). Two years ago, he participated in Miami Beach Polo, an annual sporting event that takes place at the end of every winter polo season to spread the word to more people. “I love Miami Beach because it’s a great social experience,” says Roldan. “Having a weekend polo event there helps bring recognition to the sport.” As a former Wilhelmina model, Roldan has done work for Ralph Lauren’s Polo Big Pony Perfume and posed for editorial shoots in Vanity Fair (where he was dubbed one of its 10 hottest horsemen), GQ Taiwan, and for several covers, including one for Hamptons magazine. He was also the subject of a July 2012 social polo article in the New York Times Sunday Style section. Like his polo player/model colleague Nacho Figueras, Roldan wants to make polo as much of a household word in the U.S. as football, basketball and baseball. He works hard to recruit sports enthusiasts and encourage awareness of the game with the hope that they will eventually love and understand it the way he does. “I want polo to be accessible to more people and become part of their sports itinerary,” he says. “I love being an ambassador of polo.” 144

For several years, Roldan was the polo ambassador for Piaget in the U.S. He visited Geneva, Switzerland, where he met with the timepiece company’s CEO and toured the international headquarters. “I wear Piaget watches, have represented them in the U.S. and have organized polo teams for them, including a 26-goal team,” says Roldan. As a high-profile player, he certainly offers precision, performance and strength on the field. But his good looks, style and personality have helped make him a celebrity. And he mingles with them, as well. He had a brief fling a couple of years ago with reality TV star Audrina Patridge that started with a South Florida shoot for her VH1 reality show, Audrina. While the cameras rolled, Roldan gave the former The Hills star and Dancing With the Stars contestant a polo lesson at International Polo Club Palm Beach; that night, they had dinner together in Palm Beach, and soon after, spent a few days at Mexico’s Presidente Intercontinental Cozumel Resort & Spa. While fun in the sun is one thing, and as much as Roldan warms to the spotlight and socializing that goes along with polo, he is very much a, well, workhorse. Focused, driven, confident and aggressive as a player, his sport comes first. He has played polo on six continents, including South Africa, Australia and China, as well as in England, Spain, France, Argentina and all over the U.S. Even though he was a student at Cardinal Newman High School in South Florida for one year, he was mostly tutored while traveling the world. (His mother, Dee, was so accustomed to her family playing polo that she was glad to help him move forward at a young age.) As he recalls, “It was just a way of life for us.”

During his career, Roldan has won the CV Whitney Cup at International Polo Club Palm Beach. Around the circuit, he added the Hall of Fame Cup, the Texas Open, Mercedes Benz Polo Classic, the Monty Waterbury, and the Gold Cup of the Americas, among others—and he’s won most of those matches twice. He has served as captain for Prince Harry’s charity’s team, Sentebale, during the Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic on Governor’s Island And in 1998, he earned the title of Young Player of the Year by the Polo Report after he won the U. S. Open Polo Championship. (He shared the title that year with polo player Jeff Hall.) It doesn’t hurt that Roldan is a versatile athlete, because it keeps him in tip-top shape. Still an avid hockey player, he took fourth place at the 1996 Junior Olympics. “I took hockey seriously early on, and still play both ice and roller,” he says. “I also love tennis, golf, soccer and surfing. I have to be outside!” He lives in Wellington and often runs with his best friend, an intelligent Jack Russell terrier named Charlie. Then, after Wellington polo season ends in late April, he heads for England to play polo from May-July in the Queen’s Cup and the Gold Cup. In other months, he frequents polo towns like Greenwich, CT, Aiken, SC, and Bridgehampton, NY, with trips back and forth to Argentina, where he owns a barn and rents a house in the country. “I love Argentina because
it has the best polo in the world,” he says. “I play with passion and dedication and with a love for my horses. At this stage of my career, I am lucky to be able to spend a few weeks there each year.” (His hope is to become a top 10-goaler and win the Argentine Open.) Well rounded and grounded, Roldan is a bachelor who likes to go out in groups of friends to restaurants and parties. In New York City, he visits a variety of Italian bistros, and when he can find time, hangs in late-night clubs to listen to ‘80s rock music, rap and European trance. When an event calls for glamour, he remains devoted to Ralph Lauren because he prefers a clean, chic look that bespeaks quiet elegance. Other than enjoying an occasional novel, he likes to read newspapers and magazines. But romantically, he is truly focusing more on his career than a social life. “I don’t go out on dates,” he admits. “I rarely take a girl to dinner unless she is special. I’m really involved with the duties of my career and charity events.” And he is excited about the expansion of another one of his passions: architecture and design. With his mother, Roldan has formed Roldan Design, a sideline business he adores. Together they buy and gut houses, redesign and sell them. “I am looking at doing some larger properties and very excited about the prospect,” he says. “I love working with my mom. And I am getting older, so I need to think beyond polo.” But don’t knock him off of his trusty horse just yet.

Alfredo Leon hits his mark with a West Indies-style design in this Sunny Isles Beach condo. By Linda Marx It took three years and some deep thought to design a south Florida vacation home for an active Venezuelan couple with a pair of children in their 20s. In 2008, when architect-designer alfredo Leon was commissioned to create the interiors of their threebedroom, three-and-a-half bath oceanfront condominium at acqualina resort & spa in sunny Isles Beach, he faced several challenges. the main one: the family members were unclear about what style they desired for their sub-tropical home. ”these people had been clients of mine for years in Caracas,” explains Leon, who moved from Venezuela to south Florida a dozen years ago and opened ardecon, Inc., based in davie. “For this vacation home, they wanted something modern, then they changed their minds and wanted traditional. But neither seemed to be just right for the building.” Leon, who holds a degree in architecture and taught design and theory in Venezuela, knew he would have to experiment to find the right mix for the family, which owns a retail chain of women’s clothing stores in Venezuela. since acqualina is luxurious and traditional, they didn’t want the 2,600-square-foot apartment to be too stark and modern. so Leon, who has designed many of the client’s Venezuelan clothing stores over the years, tried both styles for the condo interiors, modifying his approach each time to try to include what they wanted. 156

A pair of antique paddles decorating the wall offer a beachy ambience. The family’s bar is a dark stained bamboo traditional wood table flanked by two chairs. But neither design was a perfect fit. Ever the professional, Leon returned to the drawing board to figure it out. During this time, the family took several vacations and enjoyed seeing different cultures. They had an “aha” moment during one of those family holidays in St. Barth’s, the popular Caribbean island known for its West Indies style. “The couple loved the look of the West Indies,” says Leon. “Plus, the influence is historical. So I was excited about doing some research.” The West Indies style was indeed influenced by homes built in the British islands in and around the Caribbean during the 18th and 19th centuries. The settlers of those islands imported the formal architecture they were familiar with, but over time it has evolved to become more casual and conducive to island living. Spaces are defined by columns, louvres, railings and shutters, as well as pleasant outdoor living areas with clean lines, covered porches and plenty of windows. Other elements include traditional railings, finials and cathedral ceilings. 158
When the family mentioned the possibilities of incorporating this style into their Acqualina space, Leon attacked it like a tradewind at sea. “The architectural setting of Acqualina is perfect for a West Indies-style interior,” says the designer, who was happy to discover how well the theme worked for the space. “I used warm colors, wood, natural fabrics and historic elements, combining the rustic areas of West Indies style with the luxury of Acqualina. It came together beautifully.” The challenges lessened as he found this perfect fit. He did no cutting, because the layout worked well with his concept. The living area was cozy and square with plenty of light and sliding doors offering views of the beach. He used some animal prints for furnishings because historically the West Indies style was known for its use of horse and cow skins. He also selected old classic English furniture translated to the rustic Caribbean with colors like burgundy, teal (representative of the ocean), beige and brown. A Kilim rug in burgundy, beige and

Some of the public areas are highlighted by the use of wood cabinets and tables, figures, understated lamps, a chandelier and a pair of sconces.
The yellow maplewood cabinets in the kitchen were part of the original design, so Leon worked to create corresponding Imperial Red tile floors, which are functional and versatile for oceanfront living in Florida.
The coupleâ€™s oceanfront master bedroom is a sanctuary for relaxing and keeping on top of their Venezuelan-based clothing stores via computer. Leon placed a Buddha figure atop the wood credenza below the flat-screen TV.
The master bathroom looks serene with the designer’s use of Botticino marble. For a splash of color around the defined bathing area, Alfredo Leon used Imperial Red tile. The bathroom is a mix of modern and old style design. black was placed over a dark floor of tile that looks like wood, yet is easier to maintain. The carpet’s colors embellish the floor in a natural manner. “I used lots of dark and rustic wood then softened it with color,” Leon says. “The whole apartment looks like a real home. The sheer size made it easier to design a West Indies interior. And we took advantage of the ocean views and breezes to create a real island dwelling.” The dining room is designed in old wood using simple and rustic elements. To lend it the feeling of the beach, Leon used antique paddles on the walls and ship bells near the dining table area. Again, he kept the rustic feel yet added touches of understated elegance to match the building’s design. The master bedroom is serene, a mix and match of styles with a Colonialstyle bed and subtle Asian Zen accents, which the couple requested. Custom silk window treatments give the room a hushed richness combined with a look and feel of the old style. Leon also found a large desk, because the homeowners use their computer each morning to check on business in Venezuela before emerging from their lair. Leon designed the adjoining master bath with soft cream wallpaper that he characterizes as “rustic.” The cabinets were already in place, so he worked around them to create texture and excitement. The whirlpool bath is made majestic with the use of old style mosaic. Elsewhere, the girl’s room was painted orange and mustard to take advantage of the outdoors, then softened through the use of flowers and traditional fabrics. The boy’s room became masculine in green and taupe, colors that easily bespeak island living. Leon even took the original kitchen with yellow maplewood cabinets and added the rustically elegant feeling of the West Indies with his use of flooring. Where he could, he incorporated this Caribbean theme and was still able to use much of what was built into the kitchen. Finally, by 2011, after repeated attempts to find his clients’ bliss, Leon had hit his mark. The family knew why it had taken so long: they simply had not found the perfect match. “My clients love it now,” says Leon. “When they visit their Acqualina condo three to five times a year, they feel like they have landed in another world in another time.” magazine.com 161

The thing is, you may feel like you don’t want to leave the room once you see it, but this property has way too much to offer to hibernate—stay up late and enjoy the in-room amenities in the wee hours, after dinner, the nightclub and the casino. By day, venture out. For one, the Rock Spa is a truly hedonistic experience. We indulged in the onehour Hydrotherapy Circuit, which makes you feel like jelly before your treatment even begins, prior to a 50-minute aromatherapy massage. Post-massage, relax by (or in) the huge whirlpool until you’re ready to move on. A good follow-up is a visit to one of the pools; of the many to choose from, the Eden Pool is adults-only and features hammocks, floating lounge chairs, and poolside bar service. (The Family Pool features popular teen music, water slides, and games.) But if you’re feeling energized and up for a round of golf, you’ll appreciate what golfing great Jack Nicklaus has done with The Hard Rock Golf Club at Cana Bay, designed by Nicklaus Golf. At 7,253 yards in length from the back tees, it’s got all the challenge anyone could desire. A Par 72 course is designed to accommodate all players, regardless of skill level or experience, and meanders through breathtaking Dominican landscapes full of native flora and fauna. When it’s time to settle up the bets, or just toast a round well played, the Hard Rock Golf Club at Cana Bay offers tasty snacks and cold beverages. Oh, and worth noting: transportation is included, so all you need to worry about is grabbing your clubs and heading to the first tee.

Back indoors, one of the unexpectedly most fun and interesting things we did was take a Site & Memorabilia tour, the highlights of which included the disco ball white stretch limo Madonna used in her video â€œMusicâ€?, original drawings and lyrics by Jimi Hendrix found scrawled on the backside of a 1968 copy of the New York Times, and an original signed music contract by John Lennon. Shoppers can pick up mementoes of the trip at the Rock Shop, or the main gift shop, the Cana Shop, or something a little more substantial at the Pandora Store, Swarovski and Montblanc boutiques, or one of the Carmen Sol stores, which carry fab designer clothing, shoes, bags and accessories from the likes of Tory Burch, Tom Ford, Marc Jacobs, Gucci and Chanel, to name a few.
Of course, eating is a main attraction on any vacation, which the folks at Hard Rock know well. As mentioned earlier, there are nine restaurants to choose from, among them the open-24hours Caffeto, for breakfast, a cocktail, or even a breakfast cocktail (as they say on the website: “You’re on vacation, we won’t judge”); Ciao Italian restaurant, with a view of the property’s natural gardens; Ipanema, an outdoor Brazilianstyle restaurant that looks out on the ocean; Isla, specializing in Caribbean cuisine (on Tuesdays they do a Pirate Party and on Fridays a Dominican Night with live music); Los Gallos for Mexican; Pizzeto for pizzas; and Zen, a teppanyaki-style eatery serving up Chinese and Japanese dishes. And of course, you can always pick up the phone in your room and order up room service, available round the clock.

Alan Hughes and The Embassy of Well Being and Debauchery deliver on their culinary promise.
By John Buchanan YOu HAvE TO BE iNTRiGuED BY A GASTRO-PuB THAT ANNOuNCES the return of its chef to the “The Embassy of Well Being and Debauchery”—it’s very Miami, after all. And Chef Alan Hughes is glad to be here. He is embracing the experience and, right now, the season. Although as this issue went to press in late November, we hadn’t yet experienced a cold front that brought the temperature below 72 degrees, Chef Hughes was welcoming the spirit of autumn with new dishes at The Embassy with new, eyebrow-raising dishes like barbequed alligator ribs with Asian slaw; apple cider-braised rabbit with polenta, gorgonzola and roasted apples; Australian rack of lamb with celery root purée and oyster mushrooms; and baked farro risotto with mushrooms and fontina. To the delight of Miami’s vegan community, he has also introduced a new entrée of quinoa, wild rice, marinated chickpeas, pickled asparagus, roasted eggplant and roasted kuri squash with pine nuts and field greens. Then there are favorites like the feather-light, ultra-fresh Triggerfish Crudo with preserved lemons and olive oil (this is sometimes made with Hog snapper, as well) and, on the other end of the flavor spectrum, the Duck Egg with Clams and Chorizo appetizer, baked in a clay cassoulet and drizzled with extra virgin olive oil. The menu varies from week to week, but one thing that doesn’t change is the commitment to source the kitchen with seasonal ingredients and local produce whenever possible, as well as top-quality meats and fish from local fishermen. And they’re currently working on their own vegetable garden. Sunday brunch is another palate-busting experience, with a range of flavors both savory and sweet vying for your attention. Against a backdrop of live jazz played by Miami Arts Charter students, tuck into menu staples like Pancakes with Banana and 198
Turron, Salmon Croquettes and Crab Cakes with Poached Eggs and Hollandaise. Other delights you may want to dip your fork into: Duck Confit Hash, Jamon Serrano and Brie, and Baked Risotto with Cauliflower and Manchego. Go with a group, so that if it’s at all possible to fit in dessert, you can order up a selection and get a little taste of each of the Earl Grey-Milk Chocolate Terrine, Coconut Tapioca Pudding with Fresh Mango, and Greek Yogurt Panna Cotta with Rhubarb Sauce. Hughes, who opened his One Ninety restaurant in this very neighborhood ten years ago before it was the cool place to be, just celebrated one year at his location at 4600 NE Second Avenue with a three-day fete in November, the week before Thanksgiving. With a concept and menu such as this one, he gives his patrons cause to celebrate as well. The Embassy is open for dinner Tues. through Sat. from 6 pm to midnight. Founded in 1991 by Hector Rolotti, the flagship location, in New York City’s SoHo district, was established to bring a taste of South America to the States, and that it does. From airy, flaky empanadas, ceviches, and grilled meats and chicken to more exotic options such as Mollejitas Doradas (pan-seared sweetbreads, sautéed with shiitake mushrooms) and Provoleta Novecento, Argentinean provolone cheese au gratin, this is a feast for the senses. But save room for entrées like Lomo a la Parrilla, grilled beef tenderloin in a Malbec demi glaze, served with sweet potato purée, arugula and radicchio and the standout, Pollo al Curry, sautéed chicken simmered in red coconut curry with peppers, pineapple-mango chutney and bananas.
