HEALTHFUL HINT The apple is not just our health symbol, but it is also a nutritious snack. Like most fruits and vegetables, apples contain fiber, vitamins, and antioxidants. Apples are one of the best sources of the antioxidant quercetin, which has anti–inflammatory and antihistamine properties. Studies suggest quercetin’s protective benefits for cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and Alzheimer’s disease. So as the research continues…have an apple or two a day.

Well, technically, it is spring—but here in south Florida, as we know, we really only have two main seasons: hot and not as hot. hot lasts longer than not as hot—around 7 to 8 months— starting now. Which is why we’re already trotting out the swimwear for the fashion shoots, the bright makeup (bye-bye vampy lip; hello neon pink), and even lighter menu options (partly in preparation for donning the swimwear). While spring calls up images of pastel colors and birds chirping, it’s also when Mother’s Day rolls around, and so of course, to give plenty of shopping lead time, we’ve included our annual Mother’s Day gift guide in this issue, one month in advance. (actually, if you count the fabulous hardware sparkling all over the “Jewelry box” page, there are two gift guides in this issue.) also in that tradition we’ve got our “Moms that rock,” and this year’s group is one of the most impressive ever. in addition to looking fabulous, these women have mastered the art of balancing challenges both personal and work-related while raising remarkable children who would be sources of pride for any parent, in a time when doing so is arguably more difficult than ever. but before we skip too far ahead to May, back to this month: the ninth annual south beach comedy Festival is back, and headlining this year’s event is the deliciously sassy chelsea handler. everybody loves chelsea—except, perhaps, those who find themselves the punchline of her jokes—but chances are, you’ll never end up in that position, so jump online and grab your tickets to see her on april 4th. and in the meantime, read “it’s Just chelsea”, starting on p. 80. enjoy the issue.

Feeling European Upgrade to sartorial splendor at vicoMte a. Feeling fancy? Time to get your French on. Vicomte A., the ready-to-wear brand founded by native Frenchman Arthur de Soultrait—who started out in the fashion biz selling ties door to door in wealthy parts of town when his first job in the U.S. didn’t work out and he needed money for a plane ticket home—is now in South Beach. These aren’t your average dress duds; the majestic name bespeaks the label’s designs, which are described as “slightly irreverent” and symbolizing a “nod and a wink” to the aristocracy. Launched nine years ago, Vicomte A. has developed its range to now offer a full wardrobe—shirts, ties, pullovers, polo shirts, trousers, skirts, and even childrenswear, eyewear, shoes and watches. Come experience true elegance. 638 Collins Ave., Miami Beach, 305.535.8822; visit 52

We Go

Everybody loves a new gourmet market, but this one’s even more appealing. The intimate nature of Flavorish, with its carefully curated selection of craft beers, wine, cheese, olives, fresh bread and sandwiches, quiche, cookies, prepared dinners—you get the drift—makes it even more of a draw than some of the larger stores of its kind, and now it’s open on the Upper Eastside of Miami, where it will most likely be even more appreciated. 7283 Biscayne Blvd., Miami, 305.754.8787.

Delight The Bazaar ProjecT is a reTail wonderland made for wandering.

InStyle and NineWest have gotten together to collab on InStyle for Nine West, a collection of purses, shoes and accessories that launched in Miami in March. It’s the first time the collection will be available here, and to kick it off, InStyle’s accessories director Leah Karp came to town, styling models and showcasing the magazine’s top tips for achieving the must-have spring look from head to toe. This is the first editor-designed partnership between the magazine’s editors and the footwear brand, and prices for items in the line range from $79-$109. Check out the goods at Nine West stores around South Florida or visit 56

And yet another unique boutique has joined the diverse roster of retailers settling into the Miami Design District: The Bazaar Project has opened its doors to style-conscious shoppers seeking home décor items and accessories from around the world. Turkish entrepreneur Yeliz Titiz has curated a collection of merchandise that speaks to her extensive travels to farflung destinations—Asia, Scandinavia, her home country—and fashion experience, all displayed in an 800 square-foot space. Titiz has assembled an eclectic mix of Turkish rugs and soaps, jewelry, photographs, coffee table books, embellished and skin handbags, men’s moccasins, decorative pillows and The Bazaar Project’s own private label of robes, vintage kilims and home accessories, along with Titiz’s own jewelry line, Sura. “I have been blessed to discover a variety of unknown and emerging artists throughout my travels,” says Titiz, “from the unnoticed merchant lurking within an Indian souk to a craftsman who calls a remote village on a European mountaintop home—and The Bazaar Project is where these memories and talent can be introduced to a larger audience. She calls it “a love letter to every corner of the world I’ve visited.” A letter we can’t wait to voraciously read. 4308 NE 2nd Ave., Miami, 786.703.6153.

aventurist | local color At Cool de Sac, parents can enjoy a good meal while their children blow off some steam.

A Cool

Combination By Jennifer Leslie Kramer

Cool de Sac finds the secret to success for pleasing kids and parents alike.

Jose Luis Bueno, founder and Ceo of Cool de sac and a father of three, was facing the same problem as many of today’s parents: he was constantly on the hunt for fun, safe and educational places to take his kids that were also enjoyable for him. finding one spot that met all of his criteria proved nearly impossible. The few indoor playgrounds that existed just wouldn’t do. and so, Cool de sac was born, not only to fill Bueno’s needs, but the needs of parents everywhere. What began as a single innovative restaurant and children’s entertainment center at The shops at sunset Place in south Miami—a location that is now closed—soon spread north to dolphin Mall and The Village at Gulfstream Park. since signing master franchise agreements, Cool de sac has quickly become a worldwide trend. Locations in Mexico City and Bogotá, Colombia, are now open, and another 23 restaurants across seven countries will have opened by this time next year, including spots in Qatar, singapore and Panama. When asked about the lightning-fast expansion that has occurred since Cool de sac hit the scene in 2006, Bueno remarked, “We believe this success can be attributed to our…model that encourages a fun, interactive and healthy dining experience for every member of the family, and truly differentiates our brand from competitors.”

The concept behind Cool de sac is simple: Please kids and their parents, too. Too often parents are left sitting in uncomfortable chairs, eating stale pizza, impatiently waiting for their children to climb, jump and scream their way through obstacle courses, bounce houses and ball pits. Cool de sac has changed the game, and in addition to providing children with plenty of fun, it also provides parents with a full menu of healthy and tasty fare and, perhaps key to an afternoon with the kids, a comprehensive beer and wine list. dishes run the gamut from options like tuna tartare and margarita shrimp salad to churrasco steak. nutritious options are extended to the kids’ menu as well, which offers sides of applesauce or carrot sticks in addition to the ubiquitous french fries. Clever chefs even sneak sweet potato and carrot purée into the mac and cheese. The dining options are just one reason parents are able to enjoy themselves at Cool de sac. They can also rest assured that their kids are partaking in educational activities while there. a variety of different play stations ranging from arts and crafts, building blocks, computer games, a discovery zone and more offer children a way to flex their creative muscles in different problem solving activities, many of which also encourage team-building skills and social interaction. But best of all, each station has dedicated team members that staff the area, engaging the children and assisting them with whatever they may need so mommy and daddy can actually finish dinner before it gets cold. and there’s no need to worry about safety. Cool de sac has thought of that, too. each parent-child pair is outfitted with matching bracelets, so there’s no chance of little ones leaving the premises unsupervised. While much of Cool de sac’s business is made up of mommies bringing their toddlers for playtime, there are a number of other ways parents can enjoy Cool de sac with their mini-mes. Birthday parties are a natural fit for the restaurant-cum-play zone. Party packages include everything from invites to party favors, and if parents aren’t satisfied with one of the many themes available, the staff will happily collaborate to create new ideas. for parents who need something more consistent, there’s also a range of 45-minute workshops designed specifically for children from one to five years old like shake, rattle & roll and the Cool sports Clinic, as well as the latest Cool food Workshop, which goes directly into local schools to introduce students to the basics of health and nutrition. despite its overwhelming popularity, the success of Cool de sac shouldn’t come as much of a surprise. after all, it’s grounded in something we all know quite well: To win the affection of children, first win the affection of their parents. aventurist | local color Lisa Aportela

By Jennifer Leslie Kramer

Lisa Aportela is making over Miami, one house at a time.

Looking over her body of work, a mix of modern elegant designs with bright, edgy pops of color and texture, it’s hard to believe that Lisa aportela found her calling in an antique warehouse in new Jersey. “my mom came back from argentina with a container of antique furniture and various décor items,” recollects aportela. “She opened a warehouse soon after that. being by her side through the whole process really opened my eyes. even though the styles are polar opposites, i discovered my passion and developed my own look from there.” Since graduating from berkeley College in Paramus, nJ, and joining the american Society of interior designers (aSid) aportela has been making quite a name for herself, not only here in miami, but also in her native new Jersey. “i’ve been working with clients for seven years, helping them with everything from furniture design and residential and business projects to turnkey vacation properties.” and aportela’s experience isn’t limited to interior design. “i’m happy to do it all, from soup to nuts,” she says, adding that she has worked closely with general contractors when the job calls for more intensive renovations. in fact, this often proves to be the case when dealing with clients that partake in the turnkey design

branch of her business. “many of my clients hire me to renovate and/or design their vacation homes from top to bottom. whether it’s a more straightforward process limited to interiors or completing all the custom work that may be required in a new build, we get it all done,” she remarks, “down to the nitty-gritty details of sheets and towels.” Thanks to the wonders of technology, oftentimes, aportela doesn’t meet her clients until the project is complete. This is typically the case when she is tapped by former clients and connections in new Jersey, or even snowbirds with a recent South florida purchase. “i do a huge amount of virtual business. all of my plans are virtual, 3d plans and i get a lot of business through houzz,” the online design portal that allows users to create virtual inspiration books as they comb through portfolios, work samples and reviews of thousands of professionals. “as long as i have proper plans, a solid budget and an open line of communication with my clients, anything is possible. They like knowing they can send me the keys and that i’ll deal with everything, so when they’re ready to move in or vacation in their new home, the only thing they need to worry about is getting here.” aportela is a natural fit for South florida. born to Cuban parents, she is bilingual, and has already been flexing her creative muscle for local Univision television personalities. in addition to being close to her roots via a heavily hispanic demographic, like most northern transplants, she can’t get enough of the weather. “miami really is a tropical playground,” she says. “it’s got style and brightness. it’s a beautiful modern city that is always on the pulse of the latest and greatest.” while she is always cognizant of putting her clients’ needs and tastes first, aportela abides by her own design rules, which may come in handy for those taking on a redesign of their own. “a successfully designed room has four aspects: wood, metal, glass and soft fabric or materials,” she says, “and then, of course, a finishing touch of sparkle, which can take shape in a fabulous chandelier.” on the same note, she adds, “Color goes a long way in making any room feel luxurious, but lighting is key to really transforming the space. There are an endless number of items you can bring into a room, but proper lighting is crucial to be able to appreciate them.” another necessity? The touch of a professional— someone who knows the importance of a well designed home. “People don’t understand how significant their home is in the grand scheme of things,” aportela asserts. “it’s where they raise their family and make memories. it’s essential that it reflects not only their design aesthetic, but who they are and how they want to live.” Lisa aportela, 305.710.7048;

Little Things Mean a Lot thiS iS eSpecially true at teacupS, where tiny creatureS get big love.

As business partners, Eleonora Bonfini and Donna Piro have built an empire based upon their love of all things four-legged. Launched in 1999, TeaCups specializes exclusively in t-cup (under 5 lbs. at adult weight) and toy breed dogs. But it’s more than just a business to its owners. Bonfini is so devoted to the health and safety of her charges that potential owners have to pass an extensive screening process to ensure they can provide the best possible care for such a fragile pooch, and clients are required to sit through a 45-minute orientation to learn how to properly care for the newest member of their family. The on-site boutique portion offers everything imaginable to indulge your pet, ranging from a $5 training treat to a $4,000, one-of-a-kind gown and custom beds. Their grooming facility, Pets Are People Too—Piro’s brainchild—is equipped with Forever Steel appliances that continuously pump 100 percent fresh air into the groom and holding rooms, where six master groomers perform 75 to 100 grooms daily. Last year, the duo moved to a newly renovated 6,000-square-foot locale and introduced Splash, an exotic saltwater aquarium that specializes in exotic fish, coral and invertebrates. Bonus: In addition to purchasing a pup at TeaCups, you can also adopt a dog through Glimmer of Life, their non-profit, no-kill rescue organization dedicated to saving the lives of neglected, abused, sick and injured animals whose devastating health conditions would have caused them to be euthanized anywhere else. But there’s plenty more to eye care, and with modern medical advances, the methods for treating eye conditions have multiplied. “Some of the most common eye conditions we treat include dry eye syndrome, ocular allergies, cataracts, glaucoma, macular degeneration, and diabetic eye disease,” says Dr. Anil Vedula, co-founder of Aventura Eye Specialists with Dr. Aarup Kubal. “We offer many novel treatments for the most common eye conditions and are a part of many clinical trials.” They also offer free LASIK and laser vision correction consultations, so if you’ve been dreaming of ditching your contacts or your glasses, here’s your chance to see if this procedure is right for you. “As volunteer assistant professors of ophthalmology at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, we’re trained in three different platforms for laser vision correction and provide patients with the service that best optimizes their vision,” says Dr. Vedula. As the economy grows, so does the number of buildings comprising the Miami skyline. Some are brand new; others are undergoing facelifts—like 151 at Biscayne. The pair of residential towers with spectacular views of the Sunny Isles skyline, natural preserves and the Atlantic Ocean is undergoing a major transformation. To wit: The exteriors of both towers are being refinished, the lobbies have been redesigned with new landscaping and entertaining space, and plans are in the works for a new tennis court, fitness center, locker rooms, clubroom and pool, along with a guardhouse providing 24/7 secure access. Two- and three-bedroom residences inside average 1,800 square feet and feature open designs with great rooms, kitchens and living areas that spill out to the balcony, with tempting appointments like marble baths and gourmet kitchens with Italian cabinetry and granite countertops. Leg Up The Goldman Vein insTiTuTe can help GeT your your Gams GorGeous for summer. Aventura Mall is growing yet again—with a significant expansion that will include a new three-level, 241,000-squarefoot retail wing and parking garage, the construction of which is set to start this year. Meeting the needs of Aventura Mall’s increasingly fashion-centric visitor base will be a focus of the new expansion, according to Jackie Soffer, principal of Turnberry Associates, owner and manager of Aventura Mall. “Continued resurgence in the real estate market and tourism growth have led to significant increases in the number of affluent Miami shoppers, specifically at Aventura Mall,” says Soffer. “We’ve had tremendous demand from retailers and simply don’t have enough space to satisfy their needs.” The mall opened in 1983 and over the past 30 years has been a key component in the city’s residential and tourism growth. A 1997 expansion doubled the shopping center’s footprint, and in 2007 Nordstrom and a three-level wing of upscale stores was added. At 2.7 million square feet, the mall is already one of the largest in the country and draws nearly 30 million visitors every year. Aventura Mall, 19501 Biscayne Blvd., 305.935.1110; visit 68

Bulging varicose veins and unsightly spider veins are more than a cosmetic problem; they could be indicators of serious health issues. Dr. Alex Goldman of the Goldman Vein Institute wants patients to understand that, and makes it a point to educate patients about dangers of vein disease and the importance of phlebology. In 2005 the AMA approved phlebology, the diagnosis and treatment of venous diseases, as a medical specialty; three years later, the American Board of Phlebology was created to certify vein specialists, like Dr. Goldman. “As technology evolved, there has been a need for this specialty to evolve, and that’s how phlebology came about,” says Dr. Goldman, who helps patients understand that phlebologists treat the whole disease, not just symptoms. “What causes varicose veins are those little valves that break,” he explains, describing how oxygen-depleted blood stagnates and overloads the system. “When that happens, you’re at an increased risk for phlebitis, blood clots, pulmonary emboli and worsening symptoms such as itching, burning, aching, pain, heaviness, fatigue, restlessness, and swelling.” The lesson? Stop spray tanning your legs to cover up those veins and get them checked. The Goldman Vein Institute has locations in Jupiter, Wellington, and Miami. For more information, visit

Now that the pesky polar vortex has bid us adieu, I’m all about embracing spring’s solar vortex. Yes, with the weather reaching a steadfast sunny disposition, I’ve got easy and breezy shorts, caftans, hats, kimonos and more on my mind. Here’s what I’m eyeing for April, fellow fashionistas: (1) Distressed-denim shorts: Ideal for running errands to hitting the beach, well-worn denim shorts are it. And the grungier the better, as indicated by this American Eagle version. (2) Floppy hat: Protect your mug (and Botox bucks!) from the sun with this Aerie straw hat. Channel your inner Kentucky Derby girl while you’re at it. (3 & 4) Airy tops and frocks: Calypso St. Barth has boho chic on lockdown— this hippie-ish dress and blouse are perfection. (Not to mention, I could totally see Kate Hudson wearing these with aplomb.) (5) True blue bikini. A tried-and-true bikini is a must. Vix’s newest ripple triangle top and bottom fits like a glove. Watch your back, Kate Upton! (6) Statement earrings: Jazz up any look with these turquoise Lia Sophia stunners. They have “effortlessly chic” written all over them. Plus, they won’t break the bank. (7) Mirrored aviators: While mirrored lenses seriously mess up one’s selfie game (travesty, I tell you!), they’re still de rigueur. I dig this pair from American Eagle. (8) Message tee: If your tots are anything like mine, this Wildfox children’s tee speaks the unmitigated truth… in style! (9) Yellow-gold accessories: I blame the showy Shahs of Sunset cast for my recent obsession with all things yellow gold. These Rocs Anonymous baubles are gilded goodness. (10) Pastel crossbody: Now trending? Pastels! This Asprey Morgan Mini Handbag in powder-blue suede bullskin is everything. (11) Beach-friendly handbag: Splendid just launched their first-ever handbag line. This textured yellow tote beckons me to la playa with copious piña coladas in hand. Cheers! CREDITS: 1. It’s JUST CHELSEA Funny girl Chelsea Handler brings her unique, no-holds-barred brand of from-the-heart humor to the South Beach Comedy Festival.

Chelsea handler was born in livingston, new Jersey, to a Jewish dad and a german-born mother, and was raised in reform Judaism. even her reflections on those early days of her life come across as one-liners. “we lived in this nice Jewish neighborhood,” she once told a reporter of her childhood. “everyone had Mercedes and Jaguars, and i was going to school in a Pinto.” twenty years ago, when she was 19, she moved to los angeles to pursue an acting career, and two years later, decided to become a stand-up comedian after telling her story about a dUi to a class of other offenders, who found it funny. Fast forward to 2007 and the debut of Chelsea lately, the comedian’s own halfhour, late-night comedy series on e!. over the past seven years, the show has become a major hit; it’s broadcast daily on the e! network in the U.s., the UK, Canada, australia, germany and new Zealand. Fans tune in to watch handler and her guest panel of fellow comedians rag on celebs who are in the day’s headlines, then cap off the night by interviewing—and usually, skewering in someway—an a-list celebrity guest. “the worse the guests are, the more pathetic they are, the funnier the show is,” handler has said of the key to the show’s success. 81

That success has taken Handler’s career in various directions, from movie appearances to a TV show based on her best-selling 2008 book Are You There, Vodka? It’s Me, Chelsea (the show was titled Are You There, Chelsea? and only aired for one season), in which Handler starred, plus three more New York Times best sellers. Three years ago, Handler’s publishers gave her her own publishing imprint (Borderline Amazing/A Chelsea Handler Book), with which she signed a three-book deal; the first, in 2011, was called Lies That Chelsea Handler Told Me, in which her coworkers and family members discuss various things Handler has done. It also hit number one.

But even with all that, Handler has continued to entertain audiences with her stand-up. In 2007, Handler joined Comedy Central’s “StandUp Comedy” tour across the United States, and this month, she’s headlining the Ninth Annual South Beach Comedy Festival April 4th as part of her “Uganda Be Kidding Me Live” tour, based on her book of the same name (a collection of crazy travel essays, just released this past March). If the success of the tour is anything like her 2011 “Chelsea Chelsea Bang Bang” tour three years ago, which was extended three times, drew more than a quarter of a million fans in 44 markets and grossed more than $16 million, and the subsequent “Lies That Chelsea Handler Told

Handler told Piers Morgan: “You’re a terrible interviewer. You can’t even pay attention for 60 seconds.”

Me” tour the following year, which sold out in 20 markets, the girl has got it made. “It’s all of my travel stories, starting with a safari I did with five of my friends,” Handler told the Huffington Post about her latest book. “We went to Africa two years ago and we had a ridiculous time. And while I was there I was like, ‘I have to start writing this stuff down.’ It’s just a bunch of idiot American girls going to foreign countries and making asses out of themselves. So I thought, ‘Someone should write about this.... Wait, I should!’” Chelsea lovers can’t get enough of her brutal honesty and sarcastic commentary, on display nightly on Lately, even though it sometimes gets her into trouble. Not that she cares. It’s her stock in trade, after all. On a recent episode of the justcanceled Piers Morgan Show on CNN, she sparred with the host mercilessly, and the interview grew tense when Handler told the British newscaster, “You’re a terrible interviewer. You can’t even pay attention for 60 seconds,” prompting Morgan to retort, “Well, you just weren’t keeping my attention.” The exchange became heated as Handler responded, “That’s not my problem. This is your show. You have to pay attention to the guests that

you invited on your show. It doesn’t matter how interesting I am. You signed up for this job.” Handler then took a swipe at Morgan’s show by remarking, “Maybe that’s why your job is coming to an end.” Boom. Shocking people with her candor is Handler’s trademark, and it’s no put-on. Asked in the same interview if she ever lies, she readily admitted, “Oh, I lie all the time. It depends on what I’m trying to get out of. Oh, oh! I was in Barcelona and this guy had come to see me from London and I lied to him about having to go to a friend’s surprise party in Barcelona. I don’t have any friends in Barcelona. I made up her name—her name became Vivian—and she had a husband and she had a daughter by the end of the trip named Molly. All of this to get out of going to dinner with somebody. And my friends were like, ‘You know you can just say you don’t want to go to dinner? You don’t have to make up an entire family.’ But I was like, ‘It’s just easier that way.’ But now that it will be on The Huffington Post, I’m sure we won’t have any problems.” It’s that brand of delightfully devilish humor that has colored her persona, which isn’t really a persona at all—it’s just Chelsea.

Chelsea Cracks Wise 5 gems from the funny lady. “I’d murder my father. There’s an age demo and he’s outlived it. If I could murder him and get away with it, or not murder him, but euthanize him, then I would. He’s not bringing any joy to anyone.” “I pretty much do everything I shouldn’t be doing in front of other people. Like sometimes I take a razor to my face and take off the blonde fuzzies. And I’ll do that at work, in front of people, and people are like, ‘That’s really something you should do at home.’ And I’m like, ‘Why would I do it at home where no one can see me?’”

“Is it okay to drink while you’re pregnant if you’re planning on giving the baby up for adoption?” “If I had to dance in front of people and it was televised, I’d be really scared. If I had to be choreographed, it would just be sad for all people involved.” 84

Everyone is talking about how great the iPhone is, but it’s like I can double-check people, I’m on threeway chats that I never even wanted to be on and it’s causing a lot of problems in my life.”

Rock Meet these six amazing women who have mastered the art of raising stand-out kids while balancing a series of challenges, from illness to divorce to big careers.

Laura Kozelouzek Age: 47 Founder and CEO Quest Workspaces, Miami and New York City Mom to Jordan Sotomayor, 10 My tiMe with My son is sacred for me; i make sure i am present and focused when we are together. while my company demands a lot of my time, Jordan knows he comes first. i started my company so that i would have the flexibility to be a very involved mom, but that often means working late at night after putting Jordan to bed. i also include Jordan in my work, visiting locations, explaining the company goals and by feeling part of it, he not only understands when i need take conference calls and travel, but often tells me how i should run the company! LESSONS TAUGHT & LEARNED above all, i wish for my son to be happy and fulfilled—for me, that makes for a successful life. i also stress the importance of being kind, giving and respectful. it’s important for me to set an example and to live life with passion, enjoy the moment, have fun and laugh a lot together. i also emphasize confidence, believing in himself, always “going for it” and doing the right thing. CHALLENGES FACED Luckily, i realized early on that my son has a mind of his own, prefers to lead and is an extremely independent thinker, and so am i. these traits can make parenting a challenge. so i decided to work with him instead of clashing. i empower him to make many decisions on his own, and we discuss and sometimes negotiate to get the

outcome. with important matters, when it has to be my way, i explain why and he respects that. in many ways, i parent Jordan the same way i manage my team, and it’s very effective. FAMILY TIME we are very active and love adventure. we are water sports fanatics—waterskiing, jet skiing, kayaking, boating and scuba diving. we also love snow skiing, rollerblading and biking. we love to be outdoors, but when inside, we can spend hours playing rummikub or building puzzles. travel is very important to us and we ski out west every year and love to experience new countries and cultures. this summer we toured seven countries and 14 new cities. ME TIME Like most working moms, finding time for myself is tricky. But when i do, spending time in nature is where i find peace and recharge. i love hiking, skiing, biking, and horseback riding, and when exercising i find it clears my head. CHIP OFF THE OLD BLOCK My son looks exactly like his dad, but has my personality. it’s usually so much fun to watch, except for the stubborn trait that we both share. he is very social and silly, and loves to make others laugh and throw parties. i used to own a restaurant and Jordan definitely shares the “hospitality” trait. at four years old he was our chef, and by the age of five, he was trying to bartend for tips. he loves to lead and has an entrepreneurial mind, conceiving new business ideas weekly, which really excites me, since my first business was a coffee stand at the age of 12. 91

KIM RUDDY Age: 41 Full-time mom & Lupus patient Davie Mom to Braden, 17; Kailyn, 15; Emmit, 5

When I am not too sick to get out of bed, I manage to show my kids how to live strong and that no matter what life brings their way they can be happy and still find a smile, that it’s our lives to make the most of. LESSONS TAUGHT AND LEARNED I teach my kids that respecting others and others’ feelings and showing love will help them make a successful life for themselves. Our greatest challenge for all of us has been my illness, along with my daughter being diagnosed with the same illness. We’ve talked a lot about how we can get through it and we all agreed that handling it with compassion, understanding and a great deal of patience was going to be our greatest gift and joy to keep one another happy

ME TIME I don’t take much time for myself, but when I do I enjoy seeing a movie or going to a sporting event, or some alone time by the pool listening to what I actually want to listen to on my iPod instead of what they want to listen to (insert smile)! CHIPS OFF THE OLD BLOCKS My oldest, Braden, is a clone of his father (former Miami Dolphin Tim Ruddy) in every way, from school to sports to simply living a clean and happy life. My middle child and my only daughter, Kailyn, takes after me; she enjoys being around people and is very outgoing. My youngest is adopted, but has taken on a bit of both his father and myself—he is loud and outgoing like his mother but is very focused and kind like his father.

ELIZABETH MEJIA Age: 52 President/CEO, Communities in Schools of Miami, the nation’s leading dropout prevention program Miami Mom to Elyssa Linares, 28, and Raquel Mejia, 25

I have always felt that balance in life is critical. Because of that, I have always been protective of my time. Although it probably wouldn’t work for everyone, in my case I am very good at compartmentalizing. When I’m at work, I’m focused on work, and likewise, when I’m at home I’m 100 percent focused on my family. Just as I limited my work distractions in the evenings, I also limited my children’s activities and television time. LESSONS TAUGHT & LEARNED I have emphasized that life is a gift and should be lived every day as fully as possible and not wasted with negativity, anger, bitterness and regrets. I taught the girls that when all is said and done, all we have is family, so we need to be there for each other at all times. Relationships, power, and material things will come and go, and all we have left are the memories we’ve made for ourselves and the memories we left in others. So we need to make beautiful ones and learn from the negative ones. CHALLENGES FACED As a mother, my greatest challenge has been seeing my daughters go through difficult relationships. This happened after they both went away to college, so it took me by surprise because I thought my job was “done”. It was hard feeling their pain, and I had to remind myself to support them while maintaining my boundaries. I believe they overcame the struggles by trusting me not as a mother, but as a woman who could be a friend and confidante. I’m honored that I earned that privilege. TOGETHER TIME We live for vacations. It doesn’t matter where we go—just going away together and exploring. Road trips are the most affordable way to do that. We love the camping, the family dinners, and just exploring the areas and events around us. ME TIME I’m an avid reader. There is a book with me at all times. A minute of reading is enough to relax me. I also enjoy drawing, but I need to get back to that. My husband and I like our movie time together as well. I still like to dance, even if it’s in the living room with my hubby. CHIPS OFF THE OLD BLOCK Elyssa, my eldest, is like me in the sense that she’s very verbal and likes to discuss things. She’s very family-oriented and a take-charge person who organizes opportunities to bring people together. But she’s like her dad in her intensity. She’s a perfectionist, detailed, and emotional like him. Raquel, my youngest, is my “chicle”—“gum” in Spanish. She likes cuddle time and is less verbal. She’s like me in that she can take things in stride but she’s more of a type B and needs her “couch potato time” like her dad while I like to go, go, go. However, we are the same in how we view things. She’s realistic and practical and has a calming presence like myself—very affectionate. She’s a big picture person like me versus a detailed person. We often laugh that we’re both a bit of an airhead. 93

DEBBIE MARTINEZ Age: 54 Divorce Life Coach/Florida Supreme Court certified family mediator Miami Mom to Andrew, 18, and Emily, 17

I was a stay-at-home mom for 11 years before I got divorced. Two years after that, I launched my own practice, Transformation thru Divorce, to help other people going through divorce. Going from a stay-at-home mom to putting in a lot of hours away from home was an adjustment for my children, but we always talked to each other about how we were feeling with this change. Communication was important. Through it all, my children learned resiliency and how change can come at any point in one’s life, and how well you roll with the punches depends on your perspective. LESSONS TAUGHT & LEARNED From the time my children were little, I taught them compassion for others and how giving of yourself can be so fulfilling. Now that they are young adults, we constantly talk about what will make them feel like they are living their purpose and being happy with who they are and not what they have. Living in Miami and being exposed to the luxury lifestyle here can make it somewhat difficult to keep them grounded,

but I always try to have conversations about the simple things, values and staying in touch with their heart. OVERCOMING CHALLENGES By far, the divorce and all that it brought has been and continues to be a challenge. But through adversity comes strength and growth. We have learned to communicate better, practice more patience, problem solve and most of all, we have learned a deeper meaning of acceptance. ME TIME I have learned that I need time to myself. Being a single mom, feeling guilty about taking that time was a biggie, but I’m a better person all around for taking it. I’m an avid tennis player and I like to write, spend time with girlfriends and I love finding new activities to try. CHIPS OFF THE OLD BLOCK I do see quite a bit of me in my children on many levels including their respect for nature, compassion, love of animals, sense of humor and spirituality.

BRETT GRAFF Age: 45 Columnist, Writer, Economist Key Biscayne Mom to Daelyn, 12, and Mica, 10 I’m a writer and I’d say that getting your point across in writing is a critical communication skill, regardless of your profession. So I ask the girls to write things. A thank you note to the family friend who helped us adopt a dog or to the director of the plays in which they perform. LESSONS TAUGHT & LEARNED They’re both naturally philanthropic—I think most kids are. And together we’ll, say, bake for holiday parties at Lotus House or plant vegetables for Inn Transition. But mostly, we want them to be true to themselves, to do what they enjoy doing, cultivate their own interests and think for themselves. One study says if kids can win the occasional negotiation with their parents they’ll be better at resisting peer pressure. So in hopes of safe teenage years, we’ll occasionally give in if they make a good point, like letting four friends sleep over instead of three or having the second cupcake on occasion. FAMILY TIME We do a lot of activities together—we go skiing each year and we go to Maine for the summer, where we hike, kayak and barbecue. We go for long walks with the dog and for bike rides in the park. But my all-time favorite is when we hang around the kitchen, eating ice cream and joking around. ME TIME I do exercise, relying on a routine I haven’t changed in over 25 years, since I joined my first gym in college. I find comfort on my regular jog on my regular route or my regular stationary bike at the same gym. 96

CHIPS OFF THE OLD BLOCK Oh, these girls could be from two different planets. I don’t even send them to the same school. My oldest has a lot of my personality, but—as proof there is a God—she’s so much better than I’ll ever be. She’s an environmentalist, assertive and she cracks me up. My youngest is a lot like my husband, which is why we get along so well. She’s a vocalist, so she shines on stage and spends more time listening in person. They support each other, but they are each focused on their own, individual goals.

NANCY KARP Age: 45 CEO, Kobi Karp Architecture and Interior Design Miami Beach Mom to Jordan, 17, and Aden, 11 I have always worked, and I believe balance is the most difficult aspect of being a working mother. I left my career in marketing and PR when Jordan was turning one, and started working with my husband [architect Kobi Karp] and focusing on building the firm and our brand. Jordan would come to work with me, yet my work schedule always revolved around him. Since my boys are six years apart, it was very different when Aden was born. My attention remained focused on Jordan and Aden came along with us everywhere. I prioritized my time, which is a key element to balance. My boys know they are my priority day in and day out, whether it’s a runny nose or a performance at school or basketball and lacrosse games. LESSONS TAUGHT & LEARNED We hold a high moral ethic when it comes to giving back. My two boys have been part of many programs in the community, where they can be in firsthand contact with less fortunate people and see how blessed they are, and experience the feeling of giving back. Jordan is very engaged in lacrosse and extracurricular activities that both benefit his outlook on his future and help people in need. Along with Breakthrough Miami, Jordan developed an inner-city program that teaches at-risk inner city youth the game of lacrosse, earning him a Silver Knight nomination. Aden loves playing basketball. He’s also is a natural-born thespian. He has been in a movie and numerous plays. Through his acting abilities he has entertained the elderly at nursing homes. This is so rewarding for him since he is using his passion as a way of giving back. FAMILY AFFAIRS Tradition is very important to us. We take a ski trip at Christmas, travel abroad in the summer and pick a different place every Thanksgiving to visit with the same group. ME TIME Exercise is my medicine. Keeping up to date on social media is important to me, as is researching topics of interest. But honestly my favorite time is the time spent with my children; there is nothing that comes close. CHIPS OFF THE OLD BLOCK I see so many of my traits in Jordan—he is super type-A: very structured, fiercely competitive, extremely selective about whom he calls a friend, and always striving for perfection. Challenges are learning experiences for Jordan, not obstacles. He sets goals and will make sure he achieves them. Aden’s personality, on the other hand, is very much Kobi. Just like his father, people young and old are drawn to Aden. He can converse with anyone about anything. He is a showman, an entertainer, like his father when he presents projects. Aden has a natural ability to connect with people when he’s in a conversation or on stage. He is so much fun to be around. 98

Interior designer and TV personality Krista Watterworth redesigned this Mediterranean-inspired home into a cool subtropical retreat. By Linda Marx

Photography by Daniel Newcomb

The sophisticated salon with views of the swimming pool is an ideal family gathering spot. The horizontal stripes on the wall are Watterworth’s signature style.

Utilizing her talents for combining a classic look with contemporary living, designer and tV personality krista watterworth redesigned a south florida home in just a few short months. located in Palm beach gardens’ mirasol country club, a haven of natural preserves and pristine lakes, krista watterworth knew her native floridian client wanted to take advantage of the clean outdoor environment. so she concentrated both on the home’s spacious interior and its glorious outdoor space. “my style is classic contemporary with simplicity and clean lines,” says watterworth, who joins rapper rob Van winkle in staging his south florida million-dollar mansion on tV’s the Vanilla ice Project (DiY network). “i wanted the home to be fresh and alluring with a cozy, classic feel. my goal was to modernize the mediterranean flavor by utilizing the history and classic detailing.” watterworth is a former snowbird who studied at the Parsons school of Design in new York and holds a masters of fine arts from the new school. she moved to Palm beach county with her husband and two young children after selling the family’s northern apartment to prominent attorney alan Dershowitz. she has also teamed with robert irvine to design restaurants around the country on the food network program restaurant impossible and has worked with the hgtV shows save my bath and splurge & save. now her company, krista watterworth Design studio, is focused on south florida residential work, including the 2014 red cross Designers show house located in Palm beach county, which had her participating with a group of independent designers who reimagined the interiors of a historic home.

THIS PAGE: In the kitchen, open shelving allows the china to be showcased. The barstools are finished in chocolate wood, while hanging lamps feature a rustic rope detail. OPPOSITE: The media room and kitchen are part of one large great room space ideal for family fun.

watterworth likes to work with a clean canvas, often choosing gray and white tones with touches of glamour. she says her favorite design choices can be unexpected, like mixing and matching metal and wood finishes and using horizontal stripes. she enjoys updating the mediterranean flavor found in many south florida homes, which drew her to the mirasol project. for this young family of five, she tackled a choice renovation. the husband is in wealth management and his wife is a stay-at-home mom. the 5,000-squarefoot house has four bedrooms and three baths with a beautiful backyard featuring an outdoor kitchen, swimming pool and whirlpool bath. since the home was built in 2003, watterworth felt it needed some major changes to modernize the look and feel. “i set out to make the space both classic and contemporary 124

and take advantage of the wonderful outdoor space, because people virtually live outside down here.” but there were plenty of challenges, which watterworth accepted when she signed on for the project. for example, a sunken bar lounge in the great room dated the house, so she had it removed. she also tossed the faux painting (plaster work), removing it from walls, ceilings and light switches. in an effort to open up the house, she took some major steps in the dining room, which had exposed brick and was too dark. “i wanted to delete and refresh—basically, start over,” she says. “we took the walls out and used a clean, fresh color palette. we opened the house dramatically.” another challenge was the abundance of dark cherry cabinetry in the children’s playroom. watterworth felt it required a more playful style, so she tore out at least 125

A brown drifted-oak table from Restoration Hardware dominates the dining room. The end slipper chairs are upholstered in Duralee Navy; side chairs are made of rustic gunmetal. A Dripping Capiz chandelier from Horchow has cascades of handcut white capiz shells individually attached to the steel framework. The Galaxy Star Iron Mirror is from Arteriors Home and transforms one wall; the dominant beach scene on the other wall was hand-painted by a local artist.

A door in the master bedroom leads to the pool. The custom upholstered bed is from Bassett’s Manhattan collection in onyx and pewter linen. Above, the Starburst wall mirror was inspired by a mid-century antique. The white square on the wall adds architectural detail to the room without overdoing it. The floor is made of hand-scraped wood. Leather Louis XVI armchairs have weathered oak finishes.

half of the cabinets and refinished what remained in white. “i wanted the room to be fun yet sophisticated, and whimsical for the kids,” she says. she also added some eye-catching yellow, a color that pops in the room and helps certain features stand out. the kitchen, which is part of the great room space, is a favorite place for the family to gather because it is beautiful, comfortable and functional with an italian marble floor. since the client loves to cook and entertain, watterworth spent a great deal of time perfecting it. all family members like the idea of a white kitchen so the designer did her best to satisfy. she reused cabinets but reconfigured them and created a great deal of open shelving for display. this way, showcasing the wife’s collectibles adds color and texture to the white environment. watterworth also made better use of countertop space using beautiful white carrara (folo) marble. and she

improved the flow of the room by adjusting the bars so all are the same height, which gives the area an open, even feeling. there are hanging lamps and dark bar chairs with other touches of contrast via color throughout the space. “opposing forces make the room breathe,” she believes. for the media room, the living part of the great room space next to the kitchen, the client wanted deep seating for casual living replete with modern detail. here watterworth was able to use her favored gray tones to create clean lines and cool tones. “everything can’t be white,” she laughs. the salon was a favorite room for watterworth to work on because she was able to use her signature horizontal stripe along the wall. in this instance, she used a bold interpretation to make a point. “this is a simple yet sophisticated room with a preppy feel that has great views of the pool and backyard,” she says. 127

OPPOSITE: The children’s playroom is the former home office put to better use. “We took out the desk and built a murphy bed with a comfortable mattress,” says Watterworth. The decal is whimsical and matches the vibrant Baby Spire yellow chair. The circular off-white shag throw rug is easy to clean. BELOW: The outdoor area is divided into vignettes. The family likes to have lunch on the pair of Restoration Hardware sofas. “These sofa cushions are great for outside living,” says the designer. “The fabric is perfect because the light colors are fade resistant.”

“i used my horizontal stripe to create a needed focal point. i love what it did for the room.” outside is a virtual paradise carved out for different purposes. watterworth planned seating spaces for dinner parties and utilized other areas for easy florida living with the pool and hot tub as targets for fun and relaxation. Using a largescale coffee table between a pair of couches, she created a vignette that was both attractive and functional. “i like large coffee tables, because the family members eat lunch out there by

the pool and need to be comfortable,” she says. “i treated the outside as a very important part of the home.” the end result of this renovation was gratifying for all. watterworth interpreted her clients’ sense of style and gave them a space that was both classic and contemporary and wouldn’t become stale over time. “i was happy with the renovation, and the clients were over the moon,” says watterworth. “in fact, the wife was crying with happiness.” 129

Local seafood and stellar service shine at Michael Mina 74.

DEEP in ThE unDErBEllY OF MiAMi BEACh’S FAMED FOnTAinEBlEAu sits a series of saltwater tanks totaling 60,000 gallons, built specifically to house a variety of fresh seafood shipped in from abroad or reeled in locally off the deck of Bleaufish, the property’s private commercial fishing vessel. it brings back the bounty of the Florida seas, much of which eventually make its way onto the roving raw bar that grandly parades through the dimly lit aisles of Michael Mina 74, the latest iteration from the acclaimed chef who brought us Bourbon Steak some years ago. The shellfish cart includes all the heavy hitters: oyster shooters buoyed by a Bloody Mary mix, Maine lobster, mammoth nigerian prawns, Kumamoto oysters and a tuna poke bathed in a spicy sesame oil. And then of course, there are the local options—jumbo Stone Crab claws and plump Gulf shrimp. Create your own seafood platter from these delicacies, or if you’d prefer, choose instead from the raw bar portion of the menu, which includes Mina’s famous tuna tartare, a complete caviar service, or the duo of ceviches, a can’t-miss. While they may not garner as much attention as some of the other selections, it’s here where Mina’s masterful and playful pairing technique shines. Served with shrimp crackers, the octopus, shrimp and Satsuma dish is light and bright—the definition of a refreshing ceviche—but it’s the Pompano with coconut and Key lime mousse that’s the star of the show. The sweet creamy topping is an unexpected delight in the dish and brings real island flavor to the fresh catch. When you’re ready to move on to warm dishes, it would behoove you to glance over the appetizers. it takes only a moment to surmise that the path to larger entrées and MM’s Classics, which include the impressive Maine lobster pot pie, is worth a quick diversion. Start with the lamb meatballs, tender two-biters accompanied by pillowy ricotta gnudi and sweet date chutney. Go ahead, construct the perfect bite; we won’t judge—the meatballs and dumpling are served in pairs, after all. What next? The Maine lobster pasta is tempting, as is the octopus à la plancha and Chanterelle and truffle tart for a real umami punch, but your best bet is the grilled quail and foie gras. Cinnamon and jerk spices immediately invade your senses as the plate arrives with a flourish. Don’t bother knife-and-forking it; this pair of tiny quail legs and breasts beg to be eaten out of 146

CLOCKWISE: Salt-baked beet and hazelnut salad, Michael’s tuna tartare, and hamachi poppers are on the menu at Michael Mina 74 at the Fontainebleau.

hand, followed by a bite of buttery foie and sweet mango. Entrée options are edited, and a good portion of them are straight from the sea. Take your pick from pompano, cod, swordfish or snapper. Our vote goes to the red snapper bathing in a pungent red curry broth, accompanied by a giant scallop and sticky fried rice cake. Throw caution to the wind and tip the remaining broth into your mouth; it’s no coincidence the chef chose to serve it in a bowl. There may be one single misstep on Mina’s menu: the inconspicuous placement of what may be the restaurant’s pièce de résistance: truffle donuts topped with a flutter of Parmesan cheese. The crisp exterior yields a satisfying crunch while its center remains light and airy. Tucked away at the bottom of the menu as a “side”, these intensely flavored fried delights would make a satisfying and savory ending to your meal. You’d never forgive yourself if you emerged from your food coma without trying one of these babies. Don’t say we never did anything for you. Michael Mina 74 at the Fontainebleau Miami Beach is open for dinner Sun.-Tues. from 6 pm to 1 am and Wed.Sat. from 6 pm to 12 am.
