not cool

Clearly, the idea of staying cool in South Florida—correction: in August in South Florida— is laughable, unless you spend the month being a hermit (as Maria Tettamanti has dubbed me—and not unjustly) huddled beneath an AC vent. I have an issue with heat—that is, I hate it. My husband, on the other hand, would be perfectly comfortable living inside a giant pizza oven, and his teeth chatter when I turn the thermostat below 74 degrees. But the kind of cool we’re focusing on in this issue has nothing to do with the air temperature. It’s all about what and who is creative, stylish, unique and innovative. From furnishings and home décor pieces (in shades of cool blue, natch) to interesting businesses that have sprung up in our midst over the past year or two—some of which you most likely know nothing about, but should—to some fascinating people who are so passionate about their professions that their energy is contagious. Because our city is exploding now with talent and growth in every sector, we’d need about 500 pages to even scratch the surface on this front, but we’ve handpicked some of the ones we couldn’t help

Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Julio Bertoni embraced his destiny early in life: He would join the family business launched by his grandfather in 1952. “That original store is still open today,” he notes proudly. After graduating from high school, he went to work in his grandfather’s famous shop; in 2000, he came to the US armed with experience and a business plan to expand the Bertoni Gelato brand into South Florida. “There were no genuine gelato shops in Miami at that time,” he says. “We opened the first one.” Today, Julio lives in Aventura with his wife, Fabiana Bosio, who is the company’s pastry chef, and their two children.

Long before gelato—the scrumptious and healthier Italian alternative to ice cream—became a mainstream consumer product, Julio Bertoni set the standard for South Florida. Opening his first Dolce Vita outpost in 2001 in Normandy and his second in 2003 in Sunny Isles, he expanded to his flagship Aventura Mall location in 2007, as well as to North Beach, South Beach, Ocean Drive, Coconut Grove and Key Biscayne. Last December, Bertoni rebranded his stores as Bertoni Gelato by Dolce Vita and new locations will be opened by the end of this year in Wynwood, the Design District, Brickell Avenue, Sawgrass and Weston. His time-tested formula for success in an ever more crowded gelato marketplace is a simple one. “Our products contain only all-natural ingredients,” Bertoni says. “We use no artificial flavors or ingredients.” Even more important, he says, is the fact that the company honors the tradition set by his grandfather in the 1950s. “The equipment we use today is more modern, but the technique and the commitment to quality and all-natural ingredients are the same.” More than 40 flavors—all manufactured in a North Miami Beach facility—are on offer (the most popular flavors are Dulce de Leche Chip, Pistachio Perfetto and Chocolate Amore), and the stores are now expanding the Bertoni experience with authentic Italian coffee and pastries, as well as innovative gelato pops and gelato bites. So, what has made Bertoni Gelato so successful? “As soon as you walk into one of our stores, you realize you’re in a unique environment,” Bertoni says. “And people also immediately realize that everything we do is 100 percent authentic.”

Say the words “Aston Martin” and a few adjectives rush to mind. Dashing. Debonair. Elegant. Fast. Alas, in no current Aston Martin product do those words better apply than with this car, the gorgeous Aston Martin Vanquish Volante Carbon Edition. We’ll get to the “fast” part momentarily. First, let’s talk about this car’s dashing, debonair elegance. The Vanquish is essentially a sport-tuned version of Aston’s timelessly elegant DB9 model, enhanced with aerodynamic additions that add aggressive style whilst passing the muster of the taste police. The Carbon editions (available in white or black) feature blackout window trim, accent grilles and exhaust tips, gloss black 10-spoke wheels with diamond-cut surfaces, and carbon fiber side blades and mirror caps. If the Vanquish is the supermodel of supercars, the Carbon edition is a supermodel in vampy night couture. “Volante” is Aston’s sexy way of saying “convertible,” and as a British brand steeped in tradition, Aston uses only cloth for its convertible roofs. While many carmakers are going the way of hardtop 76

convertibles, such things add weight and complexity, both of which go against a super sports car’s performance proclivities. They also add unsightly lines across the roof and gobble up trunk space—of which this car has little to spare (though the virtually uninhabitable rear seats do make an excellent trunk annex). Speaking of the interior, the Vanquish Carbon Edition’s cabin is awash in special touches that, as with the exterior, impart the car with a tasteful edge, including a woven carbon fiber center console, black finished speakers for the sparklingly clear, 1,000-watt Bang & Olufsen sounds system, and perhaps the world’s most elegantly quilted sport seats. The Vanquish is also the recipient of Aston’s most recent interior update that brings an infinitely better ergonomic arrangement for the car’s various secondary controls, such as the climate control and Garmin-based navigation system. But this car’s beauty is more than skin deep. Bristling underhood is a sparkling, 5.9-liter V-12 that is summoned for duty by pressing the crystal-capped “Emotion Control Unit” (aka the key) into its place top dead center in the dashboard. The motor produces 568 horsepower and 467 lb-ft of tire-melting twist and sounds absolutely incredible doing so, at least once the rev 78

in Terminator Genisys last month, and will play the lead role of Nurse Verena in the upcoming film Voice from the Stone, as well as one of the leads in the much-anticipated Me Before You. Busy girl, indeed. But then again, Clarke has been busy since she entered the acting profession at the age of three. Born in London and raised in Berkshire, she graduated from Drama Centre London in 2009, and it didn’t take but a minute for her to launch an arguably well-rounded career. Clarke’s early work includes two plays at St. Edward’s, ten plays at Drama Centre London, the 2009 Company of Angels production of Sense and a 2009 commercial for the charity Samaritans. Her first television roles were as Saskia Mayer in a 2009 episode of Doctors and Savannah in Syfy’s 2010 film Triassic Attack. That initial body of work led Screen International magazine to name her as one of the “UK Stars of Tomorrow.” But it was four years ago that Clarke sauntered into the world’s collective consciousness as Daenerys Targaryen in Game of Thrones, cast in the role when another British actress, Tamzin Merchant, was replaced for undisclosed reasons. (And while her character is known for being stoic,

The show debuted in April 2011 and immediately became a cult favorite, with Clarke ensconced firmly in the center of the multifaceted and complicated story line. She won the Emmy for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama for her role as Daenerys in 2011, and in 2013 she was nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series. She was also voted the most desirable woman in the world by Askmen readers in 2014. While fans of the show know Clarke as Daenerys, even while she has been starring in GoT, which airs for 10 weeks in the spring each year from April to June, she’s had a full schedule packed with other endeavors. In 2012, she appeared in Spike Island, a film named after the location of The Stone Roses’ 1990 gig. From March to April 2013, she played Holly Golightly in a Broadway production of Breakfast at Tiffany’s. And in 2013, she starred in Dom Hemingway alongside Jude Law. Today the 28-year-old Clarke is in the midst of filming Me Before You, in which she costars with Hunger Games actor Sam Claflin, and was so inspired by her role of Louisa, who has a bumblebee tattoo, that Clarke went out and got one herself, posting a snapshot of the tattoo session on Instagram with the caption: “Just having a routine doctor’s appointment care of the master @dr_woo_ssc.” And unlike her stoic alter ego in GoT, Clarke is indulging her silly side—no doubt the one that inspired her to do the funky chicken for her Daenerys audition—with her costar Claflin as they film. “We started playing pranks on one another and he never quite managed to come back,” she said on BBC Radio 1 recently. “I didn’t eat all my fish at lunch; they had a lot of garlic on them so thought I’d put them in his

socks and put them back in his trailer. He had to throw them away and I had to buy him new socks.” Clarke can volley back and forth between dramatic actress, real-life comedian and beauty queen with ease, apparently: She has also recently graced the covers of British Vogue and Marie Claire, getting comfortable and revealing quite a bit to the latter publication, including the fact that she turned down the role of Anastasia Steele in Fifty Shades of Grey because of all the nudity the role required. “I really wanted to work with Sam Taylor-Johnson because she’s f---ing amazing. But there is a huge amount of nudity in the film,” she said. “I’ll never say ‘I’m never doing nudity’ because I’ve already done it, but I thought I might get stuck in a pigeonhole that I would have struggled to get out of.” She also alluded to her love life in the interview, something the public has heard virtually nothing about in the media. “I kept thinking that for clarity of mind, I had to be in one place,” she said, referring to nomadic existence. “And then I just realized that’s not how this life is going to work. It makes [romantic relationships] absolutely impossible. I’m soppy and I do like to believe that when the right person comes along, it will work, because you want to make it work. Everyone else seems to manage it.” So far, it appears that Clarke isn’t having a problem managing anything, least of all her career. But she may have a favorite role of all these days; at least, that can be inferred from her recent remarks about finishing up filming recent movie roles before she went back to film season five of GoT. “I went back to Game of Thrones and it was like coming home,” she told British Vogue. “Just the smell of the hotel in Belfast made me feel safe. I told myself, forget the big game plan; all I want is to do jobs that make me happy.”

NICK CARDOZA VanDutch Yachts

Nick Cardoza was born in Naples, Florida, but grew up sailing around Buzzards Bay in Barnstable County, Massachusetts, north of Cape Cod. He had such an affinity for it, he even started a high school sailing club. After crossing the Atlantic Ocean several times, his connection with the water grew stronger. “I loved it,” says Cardoza, 30, a nautical captain cum sales and brand ambassador in Miami for VanDutch Yachts, the sleek Dutch brand with a us headquarters in Fort Lauderdale. “It became a passion.”

But Cardoza also wanted to become a chef. After attending culinary schools in New York and Italy, studying wine and opening a restaurant in Buenos Aires, Argentina, then moving back to Italy to run a beach club, his life changed for the better. “I decided to combine my passions by preparing cuisine on private yachts,” he says. Working in galleys, organizing charters and being on the water fed Cardoza’s primal needs: He could cook fine food and sail

the high seas. “I got my captain’s license, then met the VanDutch sales guys while I was working in the Hamptons,” he recalls. “they needed my help bringing a boat to the Fort Lauderdale Boat show a few years back. I took a job with them and now sell a luxury boating lifestyle, helping people understand how to enjoy life on the water.” Cardoza, who has a penchant for French Rose, topsiders and navy-and-white ensembles, is responsible for VanDutch client relations along

with their press and marketing initiatives, working with Miami VIPs like nightclub czar Dave grutman, owner of popular clubs LIV and stORY, and developer Harvey Hernandez, CEO of Newgard Development. “Yachting is something you can talk to a stranger about,” he says. “I love my work. I wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world. I would do it if I were retired.”

in July, Suitsupply partners Fokke De Jong, 40, and nish De gruiter, 30, opened a shop in Miami Beach—they’ve got 60 stores globally—because so many of their South American customers live and visit here. the Amsterdam, netherlands-bred partners felt the Miami market would be attracted to their trademark tailored elegance, which is a favorite of style icons such as David Beckham, Bruno Mars and tim gunn. “Our suit is well made, and we can

sell men’s fashion from between $400 and $1,000 because we are vertically integrated with no middleman,” says De gruiter, who met De Jong about six years ago and was impressed with his already thriving global menswear business. “We are dedicated to craftsmanship.” Along with suits, the well dressed male can stock up on shirts, slacks, shoes, sports jackets and leather products from SuitSupply’s new, 4,800-squarefoot location. “We combine flair

and creativity with craftsmanship and the latest technology,” says De gruiter, whose own elan was perfected during six years of experience at Brunello Cucinelli in italy and new York. “My partner and i think well together. He’s the boss, and i am an equity partner.” De Jong started the business in 2000 from the trunk of his car before graduating from college with a degree in law, a career path he eschewed in order to pursue his passion for tailoring. De gruiter, who travels between

new York and Miami, is the market maker for the business; he’s currently busy opening new uS locations in Dallas, San Francisco, greenwich and Los Angeles. “the best part of our job is that we get to make people look and feel great,” he says. “We want to see guys smile and feel good because their suits finally fit. We make sure of that.”

Born in Vancouver, where she later completed her finance degree at the university of British Columbia’s sauder school of Business, Farah Abassi could be characterized as a well-educated risk-taker. three years ago, she moved to south Florida and started Aroma360, a scent marketing company offering fragrances derived from plantbased essential oils. Every day is an experiment and challenge for Abassi and her staff. “I love immersing myself in

developing essential oils,” says Abassi, 29. “I am constantly mixing, testing and reformulating. My office looks like a science lab, and I’m always pestering employees to smell my latest creation.” Abassi’s busy workdays, which sometimes don’t end until 11 pm, consist of a mix of marketing, customer service, creative initiatives, strategy meetings and developing business relationships both in and out of the office. For example, the One Miami team had a problem

with the smell in the building’s lobby because of food cooking nearby, and the pool reeked of chlorine and mold. “We were hired to correct these issues, and we now scent both towers,” says Abassi. “We have also created custom fragrances for other developments in Miami.” this entrepreneur’s longterm goals are to expand the fragrance line internationally and eventually include candles, as well as car and multi-scent diffusers. Over the next five years, she

plans to open 20 retail Aroma360 stores with sophisticated aroma bars. “We like to incorporate the psychological aspects into scenting and educate people on the power of scents,” says Abassi, who has traveled to 40 different countries from Bali to Brazil in her lifetime of exotic and inspirational travel. ”We hope to make them accessible to all and keep them healthy by using only the bestquality ingredients.”

Kim rubin is a party princess in the best sense of the word. Born in Montreal, she moved to north Miami Beach as a child and fell in love with South Florida. Her career moved swiftly as she pursued the high tide of party promotion. “in the late 1980s, i was coordinating nights out with my friends at the start of South Florida’s nightlife scene,” says rubin, 44. “At the time, i didn’t see my knack for promotion solidifying into a career.” Although she thought of becoming a real estate agent or a flight attendant so she

could travel, working as a shooter girl was her forte. Soon rubin used her bar experience, vision, and the talented models she had cultivated to move into the beverage market promotion business, launching Princess Promotions in 1993. Carillon importers gave her the opportunity to promote Stoli O, one of the first flavored vodkas to hit the American market, and she was off and running. “My vision was to promote new and existing brands locally and nationwide in every type of public venue across the country,” says rubin. “in the

past 20 years, we have launched hundreds of new brands and played an instrumental role in their success.” Her client roster now include the likes of Southern Wine & Spirits of South Florida, Absolut vodka, Jack Daniel’s, Southern Comfort, and Stoli and Pinnacle vodkas. now she’s adding another entrepreneurial component to her résumé: she’s launching a line of ladies’ activewear and loungewear called Party Princess Apparel, aimed at girls 14-24. “every day is work for me, sometimes 24/7,” rubin says. “i

do everything and go to as many of the events myself as i can. it’s so much fun, my business life and my personal life are one and the same.” And she wouldn’t have it any other way.

A group of tech guys staying in a Rio de Janeiro villa asked to awaken with a live monkey. A man wanted to propose to his girlfriend at the American Airlines Arena during a Miami Heat game. Another client asked for a ship stocked with Dom Perignon to be ready in seven hours. “We have a lot of last-minute clients with big requests,” says Justin Keeperman, co-founder of WgY Lifestyle with his spouse, Luiz Hoinkis. “I know every single client’s wants and needs, down to their allergies. As the company grows, they know that any new “life stylists” they bring aboard have to “get it.” the word “no” does not exist in their lexicon. “We fly where we are needed to make sure everything is handled well,” says Keeperman. “If a client wants a rare antique or piece of jewelry, we find it. Although As A child sAchA lAkic was encouraged to follow in his father’s footsteps toward a career in fashion design, the creative boy had his own ideas. “i was attracted to my dad’s trade but was more taken with speed and technology,” says lakic, 50, who was born in Belgrade, Yugoslavia, and raised in Paris, where his father devoted his life to the art of styling fabric for major French couture houses. one day, while on his way to school, the 8-year-old lakic spied a metallic green Ford Mustang, an experience he believes was a defining moment in his life. “i was bewitched by its sleek lines and felt a deep desire to draw it until i could reproduce contours as perfectly as those of the original model,” says lakic during a recent interview at the opening of Roche Bobois Paris in Aventura, where he was the company’s featured guest. “i always liked car designs from the 1950s and ‘60s. i became addicted to the power of design.” By age 17, the self-taught designer was creating motorcycles at a level that made him realize his own talents and convinced him to pursue his passion. At 20, he apprenticed at Peugeot’s interior design department; that was followed by a star turn at another design agency. Between 1986 and 1988, lakic designed the kawasaki Atlantic, Yamaha Axis and suzuki squale. All of his futuristic

prototypes, and there were many, made waves in the motorcycle world. during that period, he learned more about industrial design, architecture, graphic art and photography. he studied the work of ingenious architects, such as Frank lloyd Wright, le corbusier and charles Rennie Mackintosh, and furniture designer Pierre Paulin. “While the car and motorcycle were my early interests,” says lakic, “eventually i turned to furniture design.” A few years later, he opened the sacha lakic design co. in Paris so he could broaden his reach to include furniture, fashion accessories and futuristic cars. he says that his foray into furniture was quite by accident and happened when he was designing bikes and cars. “i met Francois Roche, who thought my work would translate to furniture,” says lakic of the architect and one of the founders of Roche Bobois Paris. lakic’s first piece of furniture was the onda bed—the name means “wave” in italian—for the company; the bed’s design won the casaidea prize in Rome. After that, lakic began to collaborate with Roche Bobois Paris from time to time, introducing his speed up collection, inspired by the 1960s revival and his love for fast cars, in 2005. the collection of lacquered pieces—a dining table, chair, sideboard, computer unit, a low table, a console and a chaise longue—offered in a August 2015

range of 27 colors, stood out as extraordinary for its streamlined forms. “Each of the elements in that series manages to express the idea behind the movement powerfully,” he explains. “I put emotion connected to motion into my furniture designs.” For example, the movement with storage furniture design is where the interiors seem to project curved, lacquered fronts. The movement with slender tables has integral bases; the sofas have aerodynamically curved contours. “My role sometimes consists of reconciling things which are opposed in principle: the rational and the

emotional, enjoyment and safety, industry and sentiment,” he explains. “I like to arouse in people the desire to see, to touch and to use my creations, or simply to feel their presence.” Today, as a top designer for Roche Bobois Paris, Lakic, who is single, has children and now lives in the fairytalelike Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, designs furniture because it’s what he loves. His fluid and sleek lines, dynamic volumes and lustrous lacquered finishes are some of the favorites of Roche Bobois executives. “Sacha is the most prolific designer,” says

Julian Bigan, the company’s communications director for the US. “We show twice a year, and he does amazing furniture for both collections.” Lakic, who designs couches, chairs, tables and many custom pieces, left Paris five years ago for Luxembourg because it is green, peaceful and international, and he can ride his bike and enjoy the landscape. He needed to take a break from Paris, despite all of its romantic charms. “Paris is a love story but like with a couple, you have to put air in between,” he believes. Laic creates about 20 pieces a year for

Roche Bobis Paris’ 250 global stores as well as for the company’s private clients. He works with a variety of materials like traditional glass, plywood, contemporary urban fiber, even plastic. His design approach means performing an act of creation in an industrial environment. He attempts to create intelligent objects that pollute neither the environment, nor man, nor the minds of man. “I believe form can only be beautiful if the context itself is good,” he says. Some of his current designs for Roche Bobois Paris include his exclusive Bubble Sofa, a three-seat piece made of solid wood. It is covered in the company’s highdensity techno fabric and wows in bright yellow or red. The collection includes an ottoman and cocktail table. His Scenario Modular Sofa comprises one three-seat piece, two loungers, a table and an arm unit. Upholstered in Soave leather, it has contrasting stitching that highlights the shape of the sofa. Metallic legs are black with a chrome finish. A rocking mechanism allows for formal, shallow seating as well as lounge seating in one straight sofa. “You can change the usage from formal to informal,” he notes. The Dyna chairs are solid beech with a stained, metallic lacquer finish. The legs are brushed with chrome-plated finish. And the unusual one-leg design makes the chair appear as if it is floating. Although 60 percent of his work is furniture design for Roche Bobois Paris, Lakic also creates electric cars, motorbikes and eyewear for other companies. He loves the diversity, and feels designing one type of product only whets his appetite to design others. “Motorcycles, furniture, clothes, cars and everyday objects are far from being a problem for me,” he explains. “Plurality is instead an exciting stimulant. My experience in one field enriches the others and enables me to take a fresh look at each object. Creating beautiful objects through a labyrinth of constraints is the most powerful aphrodisiac.”

Good For

South Floridians in 2015 have a love and appreciation for art of every kind, and not just at Basel time. We want to see it when we’re out running, cruising down the beach in our convertibles, walking our dogs in the park, or even exiting the front doors of our condos to get to our cars. The murals that have become a part of that everyday art in our lives—all around Wynwood, on the sides of high-rises, in public parks—continue to multiply, not just as eye candy but often with a message to convey, a milestone to mark, as a means of showing appreciation or standing up for or against an issue of our times. This year, two of the milestones that warrant mentioning have commissioned murals as part of their celebration. Muralist Bill Savarese is one of 11 specially

selected artists who has created a mural as part of the VisualEYES project, for which ten murals were commissioned to be painted around Broward County—one mural for each of the nine County Commission Districts, including one at Port Everglades. The project was launched by the Broward County Cultural Division to celebrate the county’s 100th birthday this October. VisualEYES kicked off with a block party last October and will end with this October’s Duende, a theater and performance-art festival, at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts. Savarese’s 800-square-foot artwork—as yet untitled at press time—melded green, blue and magenta across two walls of an administrative building overlooking the harbor. “The port is this

huge economic engine in Fort Lauderdale — hell, the whole county,” the Pompano Beach-based artist told the Sun-Sentinel this summer. “So I wanted the mural to convey that same vibrancy, to show how water and light bends and reflects the colors of South Florida.” Located at 2550 Eisenhower Blvd., it’s the first of the murals in the project, each of which is being created to reflect the character of the city in which it appears, to be painted over the course of the next several months. “The port is all about water, so that’s what the port’s committee wanted. I hope I covered all their bases in an aesthetically pleasing, 1960s pop-art kind of way,” Savarese said. Another notable name taking part in VisualEYES is Andrew Reid, a Miami artist by way of his native New Zealand with a stop in New York in between, whose oeuvre over his 30-plus-year career includes graphic design and illustration in addition to public and private commissions, everything from painted figurative murals to cast fiberglass forms. Murals aren’t new to Reid, who has left his mark on restaurants, courthouses, community centers, police and fire stations and even a subway station. Reid’s mural will go up at The Old Davie School in Davie, on the north-facing wall of a cafeteria building next to the Old Davie School Historical Museum.

The unveiling was the culmination of the OneUnited Mural Project, an apprenticeship-based program using public art works, youth development and a community beautification program providing arts enrichment through STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Math) education. Before the unveiling, the interiors of the bank served as an art gallery to display individual paintings from the 21 teen apprentices who assisted Parker.

After making his remarks about the experience and working with the teens, Parker dramatically cut down the black drape to reveal the mural, a composite that touches on themes of racism, protest, the confederate flag, and the recent massacre in South Carolina; onlookers responded with a standing ovation. At 6’8”, Parker, who as a child was nicknamed “Giant,” is a native Floridian. Even though he failed art in high school, he went on to major in art and computer science at Brevard Community College and subsequently earn continuing education credits in art history and music at Morris Brown College in Atlanta. There, he got involved in after-school and communitybased art programs as the program director for recreation art and science classes at the local YMCA. Today, the artist, whose South Florida studio is stocked with the Glidden house paint he uses to create his masterpieces—even those on canvas—maintains a love and commitment to his community, as he teaches art and establishes art programs for inner city kids in Miami, and his work can be spotted everywhere from Gibson Park, where three years ago he restored the outdoor mural Everyday Life painted by urban expressionist Purvis Young in 1984, to North Miami’s Joe Celestin Center at Claude Pepper Park, where Parker painted I Dream to See as part of the center’s west-facing exterior wall.

“Lately i’ve been trying to stick to salads, but I’m definitely a pizza guy at heart—a straightforward Margherita pie with fresh mozzarella. ninety seconds at 900 degrees and it’s done.”

Growing up in an Italian-American family, “food was huge,” says Louie Bossi. “Those Sunday dinners were the best. The only sanity in the family was when we were all gathered around the table eating together.” Bossi has managed to create a life inspired by those memories, starting work early on at a neighborhood pizza parlor when he was just 11 years old. “I was there playing video games when someone didn’t show up for work and the owner asked me to pitch in,” he recollects. You could say it was fate, and while Bossi will politely agree with you, he’ll also say it was passion. “Passion is 85 percent of what drives me. I’ve always wanted to be able to do my own menu, create my own recipes. That’s the dream, and with the new restaurant, I’m doing exactly that.” So what does this menu of dreams look like? Besides plenty of homemade pasta and 100 lbs. of homemade salami hanging in an Italian imported stagionello made specifically for curing charcuterie—“The only one to be found in any South Florida restaurant,” Bossi proudly reports— there’s also pizza. After all, Bossi is a certified Master Pizza Maker from The Scuola Italiana Pizzaoili. “But the real secret to Italian food is simplicity and the best ingredients you can afford. Thankfully, our restaurant [owned by Big Time Restaurant Group] can afford top-ofthe-line ingredients. CENA BY MICHY There isn’t much to say about Michelle Bernstein that hasn’t already been said. She’s most certainly at the top of her game and has been for some years, but perhaps what’s most notable is the fact that she continues her reign at the top. Despite an overflowing plate—two more restaurants, two TV shows, a catering business and consulting gigs at local hospitals, amongst other projects—Miami’s culinary queen could easily rest on her laurels. But Cena by Michy, with its approachable yet soul-satisfying flavors, kicks things up a notch. Small, shareable plates like Scallops Tempura and Stracciatella Custard, where the Italian cheese serves as a base for heirloom tomatoes, make fantastic starters or a full meal if you order enough. But selections from the “Big Plates” portion of the menu shouldn’t be ignored either. Our picks are the Green Gnocchi, Whole Boneless Snapper, which steals the show, and Bernstein’s beloved braised short rib. BISTRO CASSIS Imagine yourself in a tiny café tucked alongside the Seine in Paris. The smell of piping hot baguettes teases your senses and you look up to see your attractive waiter, Jean Luc, offering you the perfect café au lait.
