editor’s letter

Diamond Girl I love April. Not just because it’s my birthday month and my birthstone is a diamond—that really has nothing to do with it (if it were up to me, my birthstone would be Italian leather). There’s just something about the month that, even though we barely notice a change in the weather, totally screams spring. And while the season officially begins in March, and that’s the month we start coveting the spring readyto-wear, bags and makeup collections, and dealing with spring break (those of us with students in the house, anyway), April is the month that makes me think of flowers, birds, white clothing and beautiful days. Even if it’s all in my head, I enjoy the idea that April is all about the spring thing. As for the magazine, the April issue represents to me the vehicle for showcasing Mother’s Day gifts—we don’t

wait until May, because we like to have plenty of time to get these things done, and we’re nothing if not efficient. From the trinkets in the “Jewelry Box” section to the original ideas we’ve put together in our gift guide on page 106, you’re bound to find something special for the lady you honor on this day, whether it’s your own mama, grandmother, godmother, wife, girlfriend or bestie. And then there are our “power players,” six of the smartest, coolest, bestat-what-they do Miamians. Maybe reading their stories will give you the inspiration to start something new and fresh with the start of this season. Our fashion spread

Check out “Jewelry Box” on page 53.

this month, “Feelin’ Groovy,” embodies the spirit of freedom, happiness and relaxation, and as always is breathtaking to behold thanks to our one and only photographic genius, Gio Alma, immensely talented fashion editor Marcela Alma, and their unmatchable team— their work continues to be more fabulous with each and every issue. Those are a few of the highlights of this issue, all upbeat and engaging; and in a political climate such as this, where our senses are being assaulted on a daily basis—all day long—with negativity of a degree that I, for one, have never experienced in my lifetime, isn’t that a welcome respite in your day? Enjoy the issue.

The Everglades are hotter than ever in this issue’s fashion spread on page 128.

A high-intensity fitness studio that incorporates a lifestyle program into one’s everyday routine, The Fit Shop’s regimen incorporates a combination of kickboxing, boot camp, align and balance, and performance training to result in a perfectly balanced workout. Small group classes are offered seven days a week and personal training programs intended to provide members with individualized workouts are also available. Cool factor: In an effort to raise fitness awareness at a young age, The Fit Shop offers children’s workout classes that take place simultaneously on the Body Shop floor. 2066 NE 155th St., North Miami; for information, visit thefitshopnmb.com.

Q1:

What are the core elements of your business philosophy?

HOME FURNISHINGS PIONEER FOR THREE DECADES, ADDISON HOUSE HAS MAINTAINED ITS REPUTATION FOR TOP-QUALITY HOME FURNISHINGS BACKED UP WITH CONSISTENTLY EXCELLENT CUSTOMER SERVICE.

By John Buchanan Addison House, a well-established purveyor of stylish home furnishings that operates three stores in Miami and will soon debut a fourth in the Miami Design District, has built its formidable reputation on a simple foundation: highquality products from the world’s top manufacturers, sold at reasonable prices and supported by exceptional service.

“Our guiding philosophy has always been to offer a large selection of very well designed, high-style furniture at great prices. We represent more than 100 of the best furniture manufacturers in the world, primarily from Europe, Brazil and Indonesia. Two of our key brands, Missoni and Kartell, are among the finest furniture manufacturers in Italy. We have also introduced our own brand, Addison House Private Label. The furniture is manufactured for us by several top manufacturers from Italy and elsewhere. Our specialty is artfully coordinated pieces for every room in the home, as well as outdoors. We also offer a very broad selection of furniture in every category, such as living room, dining room, and bedroom, as well as outdoor, lighting and home-office.” Max Alcalay (left) and Alberto Camhi.

Co-owner Max Alcalay immigrated to South Florida from his native Colombia in the early 1980s and opened his first store several years later. Almost 20 years ago, Alberto Camhi, also from Colombia, joined the company as Alcalay’s partner. Today, he serves as vice president and chief financial officer. Next year, the duo will celebrate their 30th anniversary in business. Two years ago, the company branched out and opened an Addison Kids store just down the street from its main showroom in Aventura. Addison Kids specializes in furniture for children aged 8-15. The company also operates a store in Doral. Late this year, Addison House will open a new store in the thriving Miami Design District. “We have also partnered with a number of high-end developers in South Florida to be the exclusive providers of furnishings for their model homes and clients,” says founder Max Alcalay. “As part of that, we are offering high-end furniture packages that make it easy for them to furnish and move into their new condos or homes.” And later this year, Addison House will begin selling furniture via its website. Addison House’s main store and showroom are located at 2850 NE 187th St., Aventura. A second store is located at 5201 NW 77th Avenue, Doral. Addison Kids is located at 2782 NE 187th St., Aventura. Q2:

What other factors make Addison House unique? “Another thing that sets us apart is our service. We handle the client’s needs from beginning to end. We do all of our own purchasing. We do not purchase through a third party, so we know our suppliers personally and we know what we are getting. We also import our own furniture in our own containers. When it arrives, we inspect it ourselves. And by doing all that, we have exceptional quality control. And then, when it’s time to deliver the furniture, we deliver it in our own trucks. We do not use a third party delivery company. That means that we control the entire process ourselves, from the time we place the order with the manufacturer to the time the furniture is delivered to our customers. We also have a number of employees who have been with us for more than twenty years, so they know our business and our furniture inside and out. That makes us very unique and allows us to provide unparalleled service.”

Q3:

What is your message to prospective new customers? “The most important thing for new customers to understand is the quality of the furniture we offer. The furniture business is very competitive and we have faced a lot of tough competition over the years. The reason we have remained successful is that our competition has often been from companies that purchase their furniture from places like China. Their furniture looks like ours, to the untrained eye, but it is not of the same quality as ours. We always strive to sell the best furniture you can find at a reasonable price.”

If you’ve been tempted to get on the juicing train (you’re late, for one thing) and have been put off thus far by the greenness of it all, here’s your answer: WTRMLN WTR. Not only is it a beautiful shade of, well, watermelon, it’s absolutely delish (ask everyone in our office who devoured our supply in a matter of minutes), it’s pure (nothing but cold-pressed watermelon flesh and rind) and it’s got a list of selling points beyond the great taste. For example: • It’s the perfect “pre-game” elixir before events to help hydrate and reduce hangovers • It acts as a diuretic (read: eliminates bloat) • It lowers blood pressure • It cools the body • It’s packed with good stuff, like potassium, Citruline and Lycopene • It’s low-sugar and low-cal and an excellent source of Vitamins A and C Oh, and did we mention it’s a fave of celeb stylists due to the benefits to the skin and detoxifying elements helping de-puff the face and body, all necessary processes before a red-carpet event? That alone should have you hitting Whole Foods to pick up your supply tout de suite. To learn more, visit wtrmlnwtr.com.

The kids will be out of school soon—but even before summer vacation, there’s always that weekend dilemma of how to entertain them. Enter Smooshies: a toy store, ice cream and coffee shop all rolled into one colorful, crazy good time. Kids can indulge in a cup of nitrogen ice cream or dig into handpicked toys and eye-catching varieties of candy they won’t find in other stores, while parents sip on an espresso and awaken their inner child with exciting discoveries. With a location in Key Biscayne (260 Crandon Blvd., Unit 27, Key Biscayne), across from The Shops at Sunset Place (5738 Sunset Dr., South Miami) and a flagship store opening soon in Coconut Grove (3413 Main Highway), Smooshies was recently tapped by Yellow Pages as one of ten innovative new businesses to watch in the US. The business is the brainchild of Gigi Alibhai, who grew up in Cuba, where her mother, a political prisoner for several years, worked at a candy factory and often brought home sweet and colorful toys she had sculpted with her own hands using leftover candy. Although young Gigi was tempted to eat them, these were her only toys, so she resisted. Now a successful South Florida entrepreneur and mother of three, Gigi’s story has come full circle with the creation of Smooshies, a name her daughter coined to describe her two irresistibly cute brothers. (And isn’t it fun to say “Smooshies”, especially with a mouth full of gummy bears?) To visit the nearest Smooshies or for more information (they do birthday parties, too), visit smooshies.com.

JUST WHAT THE DOCTOR your face ORDERED Give and your spirits It’s spring refresh time—so maybe an instant lift, no you’re scheduling your Botox surgery necessary. appointment, or teeth whitening, or your eyelash extension refills. But there’s more out there that can help lift your spirits—literally—than you may realize. Just ask Dr. Mark Nestor, director of the Center for Cosmetic Enhancement in Aventura. “Many patients often complain of looking older because of sagginess in the mid-face and jowl areas as well as excess sagginess and fat in the neck area,” he says. “Traditional treatments include surgery and, in some patients, injectable fillers. But there are now other options.” Dr. Nestor says that his practice is one of the first in the country to offer a new, FDA-approved treatment called InstaLift. “The procedure involves the painless introduction of absorbable sutures that act as suspensions to lift the mid-face and jowl areas. It takes 45 minutes in the office and entails minimal downtime. Patients are very excited about the immediate results, which can be long-lasting.” Even better news: The InstaLift procedure can easily be combined with other minimally invasive rejuvenation procedures, such as the Thermi Injectable RF, which can remove fat under the chin and tighten the skin of the neck and submental area. “It is minimally invasive and can both melt away fat as well as tighten and rejuvenate the skin,” he notes. For information on these and other procedures, call 305.933.6716. or visit marknestormd.com.

Faith IN Education

IT DOES PLAY A ROLE NOT JUST IN ACADEMICS, BUT IN SHAPING THE CHARACTER OF OUR CHILDREN, ACCORDING TO ST. LAWRENCE SCHOOL.

“In the ever-complicated world we live in, one thing is certain: Catholic schools form a strong foundation for life,” says Dian Hyatt, principal of St. Lawrence School in North Miami Beach. “Teaching faith in schools allows students to understand the deeper meaning of life. [It] is not just learning about who God is or reciting prayers, it’s about providing the opportunity for students to learn about being humble and charitable and showing forgiveness, kindness, and tolerance.” In this day and age, those traits probably ought to be considered general ed requirements. As a testament, the success rates of the school are significantly high, which is also a result of the teaching staff. “Our teachers, who are fully certified, develop engaging lessons with differentiated instruction that help each child reach their highest academic potential,” says Hyatt. “Our school not only challenges our students to grow academically through our challenging curriculum, but we also take pride that our students learn in an environment where character development is taught. They’re extremely successful not only during their enrollment at St. Lawrence School, but also in their future endeavors. They consistently attain high awards in academic competitions. Many of our alumni continue to shine academically in Catholic high schools and magnet programs, earning scholarships to state and Ivy League universities and going on to serve in professional careers such as medicine, law, teaching, and engineering, among other financial endeavors and businesses. St. Lawrence School builds a strong foundation for success in life.” For more information, visit stlaw.org. 66

Luxury, wrıt fast THAT’S WHAT YOU GET WITH THE 2016 AUDI S8 PLUS. By Steve Siler

The S8 Plus features comprehensive performance upgrades from the brand’s flagship A8 sedan, among them the 605-hp engine, beefier wheels and tires, and carbon ceramic brakes.

68

AVENTURA MAGAZINE

From the rear seat of the 2016 Audi S8 Plus—which is where I am writing this review, incidentally—you would never know what this grand luxury car is really about. From my perforated, diamond-stitched black leather perch, the S8 spoils in typical flagship German luxury sedan fashion. I fritter away with my laptop connected to the car’s WiFi hotspot, having left the S8’s 605-hp V-8 running to meet the energy needs of the moment. These “needs” basically involve supplying power to 19 B&O speakers for my chill music, pushing a steady stream of 68-degree air through the car’s ventilation system, and repeatedly raising and lowering the rear window shades when my inner 5-year-old wants to push buttons. Vastly overqualified for such meager tasks, the twin-turbo V-8 idles with velvety smoothness I reckon that of its 605 horsepower, at least 604 remain in the stable. Based on Audi’s flagship A8 sedan, the S8 Plus is basically Audi’s most decadent chariot writ fast. It receives comprehensive performance upgrades including a tighter suspension, beefier wheels and tires, and available exotic, carbon ceramic brakes. And of course, the aforementioned engine is a tour de force; its 605 horsepower output for 2016 represents an 85 horsepower

AVENTURIST drive time

increase over 2015 (hence the “Plus” in its name), outmuscling the Porsche Panamera Turbo S by 35 horsepower and falling just 11 horsepower shy of the Bentley Flying Spur’s 12-cylinder. And while we rarely bring performance figures into our reviews, Audi’s stunning claims of its 0–60 mph time of just 3.7 seconds and stratospheric 190 mph top speed are relevant and remarkable for a big saloon like this. And indeed, the S8 feels fast. Ridiculously fast. One firm stab of the gas pedal can knock loosely worn hats off one’s head; floor it and you may emboss an imprint of your body into the seatback for posterity. Driven mildly, however, the S8 comports itself with A8-like composure. Its attitude can change from pillowy smoothness to firm and eager, depending on the driver’s selection among its customizable engine, suspension, and steering systems. The carbon ceramic brakes were occasionally grabby around town, but with its mind-bending acceleration, cruise-missile accuracy at high speeds and an exhaust note that ranges from a deep, muted burble during mellow drives to a proud baritone bellow at full throttle, the S8’s driving experience cannot be described as anything less than incredible. So the S8 is a bona fide badass. Yet, Audi kept it classy in appearance, refraining from gratuitous flash. A more angular front fascia, widened door sills and a rear air diffuser in the bumper with a quartet of fat exhaust tips are subtle differentiators between the S8 and its softer brethren, while its lowered suspension and large, 21-inch wheels give it a more planted stance, too. That said, only seasoned Audi-philes are likely to notice the difference. Our press car, however, came kitted with everything Audi had to make it look aggressive, including carbon fiber on the mirrors and elsewhere, blackout window and grille trim, smoked taillamps, gloss black tailpipes and black painted

70

AVENTURA MAGAZINE

wheels with machined spokes. And a coat of matte silver paint made the body panels look like aluminum (which under the paint, they actually are). While performance is its calling card, the S8 remains every bit as luxurious as the A8. Its sybaritic delights are innumerable, but among them are certain S8-specific items like the black faux suede-like roof liner, sport steering wheel and gray-faced gauges. Material quality reflects its six-figure price, with copious amounts of high quality leather, gleaming brushed aluminum panels, and in our tester, piano black console and gear shift trim that could serve a Steinway well. Our tester also came with optional carbon fiber “tweed” trim with subtle red threads that matched the red stitching on the seats, adding some edge to the interior décor whilst remaining in good taste. And while the S8’s delightful rear seat has proven eminently inspiring for this review, I admit that I’d rather be in one of the 22-way heated/cooled front seats enjoying a massage. Upon reflection, perhaps I should have written this story from the driver’s seat. After all, the S8’s raison d’être is not to coddle rear-seat VIPs but rather to provide automotive luxury at the highest level, with a driving experience to match. And for large luxury sleds like the S8, the driving experience doesn’t get much better than this.

ABOVE: Optional carbon fiber “tweed” trim matching the red stitching on the upholstery lends a subtle, sophisticated touch.

Olivia OLIVIA MUNN HAS AMASSED QUITE THE BODY OF WORK SINCE LEAVING JOURNALISM SCHOOL FOR TINSELTOWN, FROM TALK SHOW CORRESPONDENT TO TV ROLES TO BIG-SCREEN BADASS IN THIS MONTH’S X-MEN MOVIE—AND SHE’S JUST GETTING STARTED.

IN CASE YOU’RE NOT FAMILIAR WITH Olivia Munn, here’s a little background: She was born in Oklahoma City, to a Chinese mother and a father who is American, of English, Scottish, and German ancestry. She majored in journalism at the University of Oklahoma, and minored in Japanese and dramatic arts.... But wait. That’s probably not the kind of background that would interest you about this exotic-looking, smart, talented TV and movie star. It may, however, interest you to know that she was once a Daily Show correspondent, starred alongside Sarah Jessica Parker in the 2011 film I Don’t Know How She Does It, and was one of the cast members of the acclaimed HBO series The Newsroom. Of late, she starred as a Miami policewoman with Kevin Hart in Ride Along 2, had a cameo in Zoolander 2, and this month will be showing off her hard-won superhero physique in Marvel’s X-Men: Apocalypse, in which she plays the telepathic, telekinetic, blade-wielding mutant Psylocke. “She’s a little scary,” 82

her choice and it didn’t matter to her... What’s always mattered for Psylocke, I think, is how strong she is, how smart she is, how lethal she is...what she looked like had no bearing on how strong she was.” Maybe so, but—that costume. It even ended up trending on social media recently. “It’s not so much that the costume is sexy, it’s that the character of Psylocke in all the comic books was drawn in a way that [it] is more revealing,” Munn told Refinery 29. “But the thing that I always loved about Psylocke is that even though she was drawn a certain way, she always had substantive plotlines, so it didn’t really matter what she was wearing.” Next up for Munn: producing a pilot about a 1970s female sportscaster through her CBS Studios production company. “It’s my production company’s first show that we sold. I won’t be starring in it—we have to find the cast—but I’m really excited about that. I sold that show, and I just sold a comedy,” she says. “One of the first things I did when I got the production company with CBS Studios was go to back to my friends from G4, producers and writers who I know are so talented and creative, but just have never had that opportunity and that door open for them in that way. I know how genius and brilliant they are because they helped give me my entire career.” And a career girl she is, having followed her mother’s advice: Never marry a guy and just become somebody’s wife. “Growing up, my mom always told my sisters and me that you have to be your own person and make a name for yourself,” Munn says. “Never settle for being somebody else’s something.” And she’s making that work for her.

PHOTO:

Munn has said, describing her character. “She has no problem battling and killing. I love how strong she is.” One could say the same about Munn. After graduating from college, she was briefly a college women’s basketball reporter for Fox, but acting was her dream, and in 2004 —armed with a manual titled An Actor’s Guide to Moving to Hollywood—she drove herself from Oklahoma to California to pursue it. You’d never know this is a girl who admits to having major anxiety. She’s learned how to cope with it like a champion—thanks, in part, to a group of close, empathetic friends; her boyfriend, Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers; the couple’s Cavalier King Charles Spaniel; and exercise, which Munn admits she once hated until undergoing hypnosis. Now she can’t imagine not working out regularly. “I was going to a hypnotist to help me with my OCD and trichotillomania,” she told “IT’S NOT SO MUCH Refinery29 last year. “One day I told him THAT THE COSTUME I didn’t work out, and he said, ‘What do you mean?’ I replied, ‘I don’t know. IS SEXY, IT’S THAT I just kind of don’t. I yo-yo.’ He said, ‘You have to! It’s good for your anxiety THE CHARACTER OF and depression.’ So during one of our PSYLOCKE IN ALL sessions, he hypnotized me. I’m not exaggerating: That was on a Friday, and THE COMIC BOOKS by Monday I was working out every day at 6 am. If I missed a session, I’d double WAS DRAWN IN up and do it the next day. Now I feel so A WAY THAT [IT] IS much stronger. I remember running up the steps one day and thinking, “This is MORE REVEALING,” strange. I could do this a hundred times and be totally OK.” That motivation came in handy during her grueling preparations for her role as Psylocke, which involved several hours a day of training. “I started at one weight, and then by the end, I was 12 pounds lighter than when I started,” Munn said. “I was doing six or seven hours a day of tae kwon do.” About Psylocke, she says, “She was always one of the most lethal characters in all of the X-Men universe, and she has what I’ve always thought to be the most coveted power. She’s telekinetic and telepathic. She has the ability to create anything with her mind and she can also read everyone’s mind. I’ve always loved that about the character. Her costume was given to her by somebody else—somebody else created that for her. So it’s not

Adriana Epelboim-Levy Architect and footwear designer for ALEPEL, a high-end leather footwear line based in Aventura that fuses fashion and architecture into unique statement pieces bearing the brand’s trademark, The Line, a rubber injection that stretches from the top of the sole to the back of the heel. HER POWER: I have no power; on the contrary, my strength comes from my sensibilities. I’m an artist by nature; everything I do has a concept, an idea, and a reason to be and to become. I create from the unexpected, using architecture to design shoes; art to transmit fashion. I would say that my power is that I create art. Building concepts, curating ideas, and telling three-dimensional stories, all the time. HOW SHE USES HER POWER FOR GOOD: I strive to combine traditional handcrafted shoe-making with modern architectural design, to create one-of-a-kind footwear that is still wearable. BEST PART OF WHAT SHE DOES: I’m able to merge my passion for design, my addiction to fashion and the craving to execute my discipline into a unique project. I’ve realized I have fallen into the perfect career; a field that gives me enough tools to portray my essence and desires in a controlled yet creative way.

Elysze Held Fashion/personal stylist and shopper (visit her website at styleoutofthecity.com) who has been in the fashion industry for decades as the fashion-visual-stylist director for national chains. Today, Held says, “I style editorial layouts, fashion/trunk shows, produce style/shopping clinics—and weddings! I have a celebrity clientele, but most importantly, I am a personal stylist. I am the stylist for Deco Drive, WSVN7’s Lynn Martinez and Chris Van Vleit, and am featured in the Iris movie, shopping with style icon Iris Apfel.” HER POWER: Fashion has changed, and getting dressed, whether for work or an event, has become stressful. I remove that stress. I work with clients to individualize and personalize an exceptional wardrobe—versatile, stylish and one that works for their life, their figure and their budget. HOW SHE USES HER POWER FOR GOOD: Every year, I style and direct the “Fashion For A Cause” Fashion Show. Juwan Howard and his glam wife, Jenine, organize a huge fundraiser for The Juice Foundation, a fashion show where every model is a patient at the Sylvester Cancer Center Pediatric Unit. I am on the Board of Directors at DASH, Design & Architecture High School in the Design District, and I love their work. I have a select few interns from the fashion department, and they help at all my shows, shoots, etc.

BEST PART OF WHAT SHE DOES: With my personal styling/shopping service, I help my clients embrace their individuality enough to create their own distinctive style—I get to change the way people see themselves, and as a result, the way they look at the world. The reward is in making their world better! ABOUT MIAMI…. Miami has shown the world that a city can transform itself architecturally, culturally and stylishly. I moved here in the 80s as the Fashion Director for Lillie Rubin stores, and participated in the fashion explosion in the 90s—getting to work on fashion projects that began to put Miami on the map. With the cultural explosion of the museums, Miami City Ballet, Arsht Center, and especially Art Basel, as well as the phenomenal expansion of Aventura Mall, Design District, and Bal Harbour Shops, Miami has proven itself globally to be a major fashioncentric urban destination.

Steve Owens President of Swire Properties since 1977. “I have been with the company for almost 40 years, helping develop over $3 billion in projects throughout the states of Florida, Hawaii and Texas, as well as projects in Hong Kong. Today I am blessed to be involved in one of the most iconic projects in Miami, Brickell City Centre.” HIS POWER: I’m uncomfortable with the term and, quite frankly, I never use or think of it. My belief is leading by example and holding yourself accountable is the key to success. HOW HE USES HIS POWER FOR GOOD: Swire is unique in the sense that while it is a local property development company, it has a global perspective. I’m proud to be a part of a company that builds with the greater context of the community in mind. Every aspect of Brickell City Centre was carefully thought out for long-term sustainability, connectivity and accessibility. It seamlessly connects within the wider urban context in many levels of its design, from pedestrian crosswalks and overhead pathways, underground parking, carefully considered transit connections and even linking the building with direct access to a redesigned and enhanced Metromover station.

BEST PART OF WHAT HE DOES: The impact our developments have on our city. Brickell City Centre is certainly a first for Miami. What we’re doing here is unique; there’s no handbook or manual for it because it hasn’t been done before. I feel privileged to participate and make a contribution.

ABOUT MIAMI…. It’s an exciting time to be in Miami. Miamians today are embracing urban living; they are ready for new levels of culture, diversity and exciting urban synergies. Ray & Shannon Allen The retired NBA champion and Olympic gold medalist and his wife, the creator/ executive producer of The PreGame Meal, now owners and creators of Grown organic fast food in South Miami. “At my core, I’m a writer, an idea person. Ideas come to me constantly—business concepts, song lyrics, recipes, pitches for TV shows, home design ideas and ways to improve how we do simple tasks in our everyday lives,” says Shannon. “I think my personal power comes from the fact that I don’t believe in the word ‘no.’ We are all living on a tiny blue ball floating in the middle of immense nothingness. Anything is possible.” Adds Ray: “I get my power from my belief that every day we are alive is an opportunity to get better and help inspire the people around us to get better, and together we can make the world a better place.”

94

AVENTURA MAGAZINE

HOW THEY USE THEIR POWER FOR GOOD: RAY: By trying to spend as much time around kids as humanly possible. I have been very fortunate in life to have family and mentors to help inspire me along my journey, and I hope to be a source of inspiration, encouragement and support for kids in our community. SHANNON: One of my biggest strengths is my ability to use my voice. When [son] Walker was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes in 2008, there were a few people in our inner circle that suggested that we keep it quiet, that it was a ‘private family medical issue.’ But Ray and I felt it was our responsibility to tell people about T1D and the warning signs. We almost lost Walker; it was a nightmare. In that moment we felt and still feel that by speaking out, we could raise the level of awareness and help efforts to fund-raise for a cure for our son and the millions like him battling with the condition.

BEST PART OF WHAT THEY DO: SHANNON: There is nothing more powerful than getting your idea out of the cage and onto the stage. I remember driving down the highway, pregnant with our fifth child on the way to the grocery store with two of our boys asleep in their car seats, and Walker got low blood sugar. I looked around the highway for something healthy and convenient, and it just didn’t exist. Out of a moment of frustration, I had an idea to change the way busy people eat. It may have taken years to compile a team, devise a plan, and bring Grown to life, but now busy families can hit our drive-thru for convenient and affordable organic, freshly prepared breakfast, lunch and dinner. That’s the best part: it’s happening! ABOUT MIAMI…. RAY: Miami is an international city with a diverse and thriving culture that converge in one of the most beautiful places on Earth. To me, Miami isn’t a place or a destination, it’s a life force.

Yazbeck has been the recipient of a long list of business awards and accolades, including Donald Trump’s The Apprentice and the 2014 British Government’s Entrepreneur of The Year Award. HIS POWER: I’ve an innate power to master an area or thing that is foreign to me. The education process requires passion and patience, but with time, most things in life can be mastered. Passion brings expertise. HOW HE USES HIS POWER FOR GOOD: I believe the arts enrich society: painters, composers, writers and filmmakers are testament to the quality of a civilization. I’ve a particular fondness for classical music and so I’m a registered patron of The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in London and the New World Symphony in Miami. For many years, my family in the UK have fostered children whose parents are in court or prison and so I’ve an appreciation of the work Voices for Children does in Miami. I’ve been a “voice” for them and continue to contribute. ABOUT MIAMI…. My businesses require that I spend a lot of time in airplanes and unsexy locations and whilst I love spending time in London, nothing compares to the bliss of peering out of an airplane as it descends into Miami followed by the warm blast of air as I disembark at MIA. I live on a palm-tree framed, white sand beach with clear, bathtub-azure water. I take dips in the ocean before heading to the office. I sip glasses of rosé with my toes in the sand. Life is good. DISCONNECT & RECHARGE WHEN YOU CAN’T ACTUALLY TRAVEL TO GET AWAY, ESCAPE TO A FABULOUS SPA. IN SOUTH FLORIDA, YOU’VE GOT YOUR PICK.

AVENTURA MAGAZINE

Sometimes, it’s just not feasible, affordable, prudent or possible to chuck everything and escape to a distant tropical island to live a life of leisure and pampering. Ah, but we can dream. And sometimes we can dig out the passport and go, but in the interim, what do we do? We “spa.” (Spä) Verb: The act of unplugging the mobile device and decompressing in a place no one can find us. Read on for some of the finest spas South Florida has to offer for mind-altering relaxation. REMÈDE SPA AT THE ST. REGIS BAL HARBOUR The St. Regis Bal Harbour opened in 2012 as the area’s new glamazon, and since then the Remède spa has gained a loyal following for its coveted Forbes Five Star rating, luxurious seaside location and sheer pampering. Within a subtly scented lemongrass oasis lies a 14,000-square-foot retreat with 11 treatment rooms, Vichy rain shower, Finnish sauna, aromatic

steam rooms and one luxurious couples suite. The spa brings the outdoors in with an open-air, co-ed relaxation room (men and women also have their respective indoor lounges) replete with champagne, chocolate truffles, infused waters and other goodies. Upon request, massages can be enjoyed outdoors within private, elevated cabanas above mini rock pools (to stimulate circulation, walk on the smooth rocks for a few minutes. It’s heavenly). As the hotel is a favorite among globetrotting royals, it’s no surprise that one of Remède spa’s signature treatments is the Royal Muscle Rejuvenation. Dating back to ancient Thailand, where the treatment was created for warriors returning from battle (rush hour on I-95 qualifies), its main allure is heated herbal poultices containing turmeric, camphor and sweet orange that are pressed and rubbed on the body and combined with therapeutic massage to calm tense muscles, increase

Visit stregisbalharbour.com or call 305.993.0600. THE BETSY SPA AND WELLNESS GARDEN Perched three stories above the ocean on the quiet end (yes, there is one) of Ocean Drive is Miami’s only openair rooftop spa, a well-kept little secret in the Art Deco district. A sanctuary in the midst of the South Beach bustle, this retreat was designed as a Zen garden, with three open-air cabanas and carefully curated treatments inspired by global locales. Each is accompanied by a line of poetry, which is fitting for the hotel named by the New York Times as “one of the world’s great literary arts hotels.” Upon arrival, spa guests receive a Welcome Foot Ritual emulating those performed in eastern cultures as a symbol of respect when entering one’s home. Every treatment is intended to harness the earth’s energy and encourage well-being. Nothing expresses that philosophy more directly than the “Inner Wellbeing” treatment (“the energy of the mind is the essence of life” –Aristotle), a massage with crystals to open the body’s seven major energy centers—its

chakras—for total balance. The therapist then finds and breaks up the tension spots, and stretches the limbs (if the client likes) to encourage detoxification and blood flow. A brief but lovely ceremony includes ringing of chimes and gesture to the universe to harness its positive energy. Visit thebetsyhotel.com or call 305.531.6100.

study, brings her expertise to The Standard. If you want to know where you have been, how you got there, what makes you tick (and happy) and where you are going in your personal journey, this is for you. The session begins with brief intake form to understand your medical history, a taking of the pulse, and the (very important) date/time/year you were born. First, a gentle acupuncture alignment opens the body’s energy pathways and helps correct imbalances (i.e., insomnia, low energy). Then begins the celestial reading. There are moons rising, third and fourth houses and planets in play that all make up your unique, harmonious structure and can be out of whack if you’re a square peg endeavoring to fit into a round hole (for example, an artist who’s forcing himself to succeed in a corporate environment). The result is an hourand-a-half consultation (more time can be added for a deeper reading) that provides tremendous clarity and insight into the path that will bring you utmost personal joy. Hint: Relax in a chaise longue at the pool and transcribe your recollections after the session to reflect on them in the following days. ven though John Raimondi recently completed the interior design of his new house, he admits it is the 25th place where he has lived and created since he left his parents’ home. But the excitement of seeing each new one come together never wanes. The nationally known monumental sculptor and contemporary art collector, who lives in Palm Beach Gardens’ BallenIsles, designed his new home with the art he collects and creates and with the furnishings he loves. “I like an environment of understated elegance,” says Raimondi, who has a current exhibition of his preparatory drawings for his sculptures in ink, graphite, pastel and oil stick on display at the Boca Raton Museum of Art through April 10. The artist, whose more than 100 sculptures reside in the collections of museums, airports, colleges and other public and private locations in the US and around the world, loves the challenge

“IT IS INTUITION, AND THIS PLAYS AN IMPORTANT PART OF THE PROCESS. FOR MY HOME, I LISTEN TO THE SPACE, BECAUSE I HAVE TO LIVE WITH IT.” of designing his own homes. He has an ongoing interest in collecting modern and contemporary art that is also popular among connoisseurs of the current culture. The works mesh high and low in bold colors and maneuvers and in many other creative ways, making the leisure study of his interiors seem like a learning experience. “Art is the focus,” he explains of his design theme. “I treat my interiors like I do when I create a metal sculpture. A drawing will tell me what the sculpture will do. It is intuition, and this plays an important part of the process. For my home, I listen to the space, because I have to live with it.” The BallenIsles home comprises 3,300 square feet with three bedrooms, three baths, a den, a dining room and a greenhouse. It has beautiful Italian porcelain tile floors; 14-foot, 7-inch ceilings

“THE VIEWS AND THE LIGHT ARE JUST BEAUTIFUL. I LIKE TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE SERENITY WHEN I CAN.” in the foyer and living room, and expansive views of a glorious back yard filled with flowing water and magnificently landscaped pool areas. “The architect who designed this house understood how to space plan,” says Raimondi, who was born in Chelsea, MA, and has lived all over the country. “Some walls needed to be blocked up, and I encountered other challenges while designing the house. But the space was nothing I could not handle in a fast and efficient way.” To start, he demolished the kitchen and three bathrooms because they didn’t fit his plan. He also changed some of the arches because he felt there were too many in the existing structure. Colors were selected quickly, and decisions made without a lot of fanfare. “I like renovation,” Raimondi notes. “I am a decisive person and pick out colors immediately. It’s fun for me, and I am one person, not a couple who will fight over what one wants that the other doesn’t.” 120

“I LIKE RENOVATION. I AM A DECISIVE PERSON AND PICK OUT COLORS IMMEDIATELY. IT’S FUN FOR ME, AND I AM ONE PERSON, NOT A COUPLE WHO WILL FIGHT OVER WHAT ONE WANTS THAT THE OTHER DOESN’T.” The sculptor did most of the project in three months because he has maintained a good crew over the years. He insisted that the renovation and interior design be his full-time job so he could finish and move in before his museum show opened in February. (The show travels from Boca Raton to Ocala, then St. Angelo, TX.) “After I finished the kitchen and bathroom renovations, I could feel the space taking shape,” he recalls. “I also made the one-car garage into an air-conditioned storage room for some of my art, which I have been collecting since 1971.” Since the room proportions were good from the start, Raimondi was able to spend his time arranging each design around his choice of art and furnishings. The living room, which is reached through the art-filled foyer, is dominated by more splashy art, a beautiful vignette of upholstered sofas and a center glass-topped coffee table. The

large, uncluttered space has great views of the backyard. The room is one of his favorite places to sit, read the New York Times, play with his dog Skitty, and enjoy the tranquility of South Florida life. “The views and the light are just beautiful,” he says. “I like to take advantage of the serenity when I can.” Another favorite spot is the breakfast nook next to the kitchen. This area is made spectacular by more eye-popping art and the floor-to-ceiling glass doors leading to the backyard pools and gardens. The sculptor can awaken in the morning, sit at the rectangular quartz table and gaze outdoors where he placed another dining table (that seats 10) in the heart of the sub-tropical greenery. The modern kitchen, made of driftwood and oak, was changed so he could display his pot and vessel collection and cook to his specifications. The minimalist space is filled with his favorite GE Monogram

The renovated kitchen is stunning in its simplicity. “I have an intense master woodworker from Metropolitan Woodwork in Jupiter,” says Raimondi. “He did much of the work in my house.” The counters are durable brown quartzite.

appliances because they are user-friendly, and he loves to entertain on a regular basis. The stone for the countertops is a brown quartzite, a durable yet elegant material that is stronger than granite. Since Raimondi collects pots—some more than 100 years old from Africa and Asia—he uses them as showpieces for those who are invited to his home. They are displayed atop cabinets under the contemporary lighting. “These objects are all utilitarian,” he says. “They store food, and some were used for water.” The sculptor hosts frequent parties for clients, friends and family members in the dining room.  This is a stand-out space because of the large and colorful Gregory Amenoff and Katherine Porter canvases that hang near the round quartzite dining table and 1933 Mies Van der Rohe chairs for Knoll. “At my round table, everyone sits at the head,” he quips. The den, with its porcelain floor, is another welldesigned space with a French Moderne armoire made of blistered mahogany. Raimondi has a ceremonial drum from Tibet in one corner and an abstract Brian Rutenberg canvas hanging on the wall.

His master bedroom is spacious, colorful and makes good use of bringing the outdoors in via lots of expansive glass. The room is located so close to the pool that the artist can virtually take a dip within a couple of seconds after exiting. Like the other rooms, the master is sparsely decorated to highlight the colors of his art collection and throw rug. The colors are smashing: purple, pink, orange, ocher and blue. The canvases and Calvin Klein comforter appointing the bed each take colors from the other. Two other bedrooms display the same attention to detail with the design created around his works of art. The renovated powder room features white onyx, a Bruce Helander collage, a white gold frame mirror and an enamel sink in the unusual shape of a severe oval. “I love the drama when I look into this room,” says Raimondi. Even though the sculptor will likely rotate his art after a few months, he never tires of admiring his collections and how they work with his choice of furnishings. “No matter where I go,” he says, “I can’t wait to get home.

In the dining room, which is simple yet dynamic, the art speaks volumes. LEFT: The “L” painting is by Katherine Porter. RIGHT: The painting hanging to the right of the table is by Gregory Amenoff.

If you’ve lived in Miami for any length of time, or if you’re just a bona fide fan of Frank Sinatra, you may already know that Miami played a solid role in the history of his life. He and the rest of his cohorts that comprised the Rat Pack spent a lot of time here; because he loved the city, he traveled here often, filmed several movies here (Tony Rome, A Hole in the Head) and performed at the Fontainebleau Hotel and other clubs in the area. Like the rest of us, Ol’ Blue Eyes had a thing for the Magic City. “Frank Sinatra loved Palm Springs, where his home was. The next place he loved was Miami,” says HistoryMiami president and CEO Stuart Chase. “So he had a real connection and love of Miami, and that’s why he performed here often and some of his [movies] were filmed here at the same time.” That’s also one reason that “Sinatra: An American Icon,” which pays homage to Sinatra’s life, is taking place not only here (it started March 4 and continues

The show is the official exhibit of the 2015 Frank Sinatra Centennial, or what would have been the crooner’s 100th birthday on December 12, 2015. But it’s much more than a traveling exhibit—it truly is a celebration of the singer’s life; it’s comprised of a host of events, including the upcoming Jack Daniel’s Whiskey Tasting in April—one of Sinatra’s drinks of choice—and a collaborative poetry workshop with O Miami. In June, there’s a free movie event and a “magical mystery musical tour” around the city with HistoryMiami resident historian Dr. Paul George.

As for the exhibit itself, expect to get an upclose look at pieces of Sinatra’s clothing, including tuxedos and his famous fedoras; gold records and Grammy Awards; original paintings done by the singer that have never before been on display; family and professional photos and mementos; personal items and more, including—specific to the Miami show—a special display focusing on Sinatra’s Miami connections to our city, such as concert programs from his performances at local clubs, and movie and TV memorabilia from productions that took place on location in and around Miami. There’s also video, original audio from studio sessions, and family and official photographs. “We’re not just all about old dead stuff,” says Chase, “but rather how [history] resonates today.” “Sinatra: An America Icon” is on display through June 5 at HistoryMiami, 101 W. Flagler St., Miami. Tickets run between $6.12-$11.24. Call 305.375.1492 or purchase online at historymiami.org.

Meanwhile, the country is on the brink of the Civil War, and the conflict in Missouri demands that everyone take a side before the bloodbath reaches their doorstep. Inspired by Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights, Stone Field is a passionate story of how violence and vengeance pervert the human spirit, and how hatred can be transcended by love. $17.99, Roaring Brook Press

The lovers will stop at nothing to ensure their victory—including harnessing a dark power long rumored to be present on the former plantation that houses their school. But when feuds turn to fatalities, and madness begins to blur the distinction between what’s real and what is imagined, the girls must decide where they draw the line. $17.99, HarperCollins Publishers

SALT SPRAYS, EUROPEAN WAYS HALLANDALE’S BEACH-STRADDLING BLUE BAR & GRILL BLENDS PROVENCIAL FRENCH, IBERIAN AND ITALIAN COASTLINE COOKING. By Dirk DeSouza Commanding views of the ocean are that million-dollar punch we crave while eating seafood, the visual reminder of the circle of life completed as delicacies exit the ocean and enter our bellies. Hallandale Beach, the once-sleepy cousin between Miami and Fort Lauderdale, is now having its day in the sun as better eateries pepper and populate the Atlantic shoreline. Blue Bar & Grill at The Hemispheres Condominium complex, the French /Italian Iberian culinary brainchild of chef Anthony Raggiri, smartly capitalizes on both a captive resident audience and the general public, all of whom breezily come and go between the restaurant’s three distinct areas—the Lounge, the Dining Room and the Terrace. The Lounge sports a full liquor bar and an impressive Happy Hour from 4-6 pm; the homey Dining Room’s leather chairs sit atop polished wood floors under beamed ceilings replete with a gleaming disco ball; while the Terrace offers the most ocean-centric dining experience, overlooking the property’s expansive pools, waterfalls and sandy beaches. What keeps Blue Bar & Grill humming is weekend-centric live music dinner shows from a staged snugged into the dining room, emitting Motown, jazz, classics and (yes!) Russian show tunes. And an adjacent banquet hall that effortlessly feeds up to 330 guests. For Chef Raggiri, Blue Bar & Grill represents his third US restaurant, following the UES New York City successes of both 152 AVENTURA MAGAZINE

Bistro 61 and Marche Du Sud. Hailing from picturesque Marseilles in the heart of France’s legendary Provence, Raggiri’s 20-year career shines in Blue’s greatest hits menu of beautifully plated entrées, soups, salads and sandwiches. Think of decadent, classic dishes like Moules Frites in white wine with crispy fries; Rigatoni alla Bolognese with meat ragu and parmigiana cheese; Crispy Duck à L’Orange with ratatouille and potato gratin; Risotto ai Fungi with wild mushrooms and black truffle oil; Grouper Française with mashed potatoes and seasonal vegetables; and Escargots en Persillade with garlic and parsley butter. Then couple those classics with lighter fare like the Grilled Vegetables & Goat Cheese Tower, a Shrimp Cocktail or the Burrata & Tomato Salad. DINING GUIDE DRINK, EAT AND REPEAT: THERE ARE PLENTY OF PLACES TO CHOOSE FROM

Unusual offerings such as crickets in brie and this crispy crab dish have put PREY on the culinary map.

PREY AT 1 HOTEL & HOMES

We all love a good pop-up shop, however fleeting— like a good cliffhanger that leaves you jonesing for more. But if you’re not careful (and if you don’t book a reservation ahead of time), you might just miss the sustainable sushi pop-up Prey on the rooftop of 1 Hotel in South Beach. If whimsical white décor and a miles-in-every-direction view from the 18th-story rooftop bar is not enough to seal the deal for you, how about Chef Bun Lai, who pays homage to the predator and prey interconnections in the food chain by actually going out to hunt, dive and forage what will be made into your very meal this weekend. Focusing on nurturing the delicate balance of our eco-system, Bun Lai has devised a largely plant-based menu and uses only sustainable meat ingredients—what he calls “invasive animals”—caught and prepared with the utmost respect for humanity and ethical food practices. Like their Cerdo Imperialista, consisting of roasted pork of invasive feral hogs wrapped in potato skin, topped with a hormone-free cow’s milk cheese, curry and a sunny side up quail egg. Feeling a bit more adventurous? You can find even crickets and antelope in the offing. With a tasting menu fit for a king, sushi, dancing and sake, what more can we ask for? But hurry: it’s only open until April 30.

AJI CARBON

A slurry of Peruvian restaurants seems to be popping up everywhere these days, as the funky combination of South American and Asian flavors attracts a wide variety of palates. But you’d be hard pressed to find anyone who does it better than Anthony Verastegui at Ají Carbon in North Miami Beach. A true hidden gem—don’t let the homey décor fool you—Ají Carbon is packing a serious punch, thanks to its recipes imbued with elevated flavors straight from the Andes garden, appropriately fashioned into a swanky presentation fit for Miamians. They’ve got all the mouth-watering classics, like Lomo Saltado, countless ceviches, and of course, seafood specialties like their Mahi Novoandino—fresh, quinoa-crusted mahi mahi— or their Tuna Steak served in a coconut lime sauce. Carnivores may opt instead for the juicy Peruvian-spiced rotisserie chicken (you’re encouraged to eat it with your hands) and goudastuffed yuquitas washed down with an authentic Cusqueña beer, of course.
