Leaders Gather for the OU & National Eruv Initiative’s 3rd Annual City Eruv Conference
Keeping hundreds of eruvin kosher worldwide is complex, demanding, and often hazardous. At the Third Annual City Eruv Conference at the Sheraton Edison in New Jersey, 130 eruv supervisors, poskim, rabbanim, and community leaders from 50 U.S. cities plus Argentina, Canada, the UK, and Israel came together to learn, innovate, and share chizuk.
Organized by Rabbi Ezra Sarna (OU Halacha Initiatives) and Rabbi Baruch Gore (National Eruv Initiative), the event highlighted unity across Klal Yisrael. “Participants’ ruach, positivity, and achdus were remarkable,” said Rabbi Gore. A major unveiling came from Aware Buildings CEO Jerry Kestenbaum: a new wireless eruv-string motion-sensor system designed to detect breaks in real time, increasing safety, efficiency, and halachic oversight. Attendees participated in practical and halachic sessions including: Materials & Tools, Ladder Safety, Techum Shabbos in Modern Cities, Bungalow & Camp Eruvin, Foundations for a Successful Eruv Organization, and Eruvei Chatzeiros: Shaylos & Solutions This year introduced concurrent tracks tailored to skill level and interest
The program also featured a Builders Panel, demonstrations of the OU’s free eruv-tracking software, hands-on exploration of bucket trucks, and roundtables for sharing tips and real-world experiences. First-time attendee Nechemya Abenson (London) valued the camaraderie: “This work can feel lonely Meeting colleagues even from Argentina was inspiring.” His presentation on London eruvin impressed participants with its high-level construction and management standards.
Rabbi Dr Yoni Robinson (Kew Gardens Hills) returned for the third time, noting the benefit of learning from poskim and seasoned professionals A highlight was Unpublished Psakim from Rav Moshe Feinstein zt”l, presented by Rabbi Yaakov Yosef Eider. The conference honored three trailblazers whose works made the complex laws of eruvin accessible: Rav Shimon Eider zt”l, Rabbi Yosef Gavriel Bechhofer, and Dr. Bert Miller.
Reflecting on the event, Rabbi Gore said, “Our participants return home energized and equipped to improve their eruvin.” Rabbi Sarna added, “The momentum is extraordinary. Each year, more communities are strengthened and uplifted.”
