CASE STUDY

PARISIAN APARTMENT of JEAN-CHRISTOPHE AUMAS

CULTURAL REFERENCE MATERIALITY The Parisian apartment has re-appropriated the checkered flooring design as seen in Palm Springs homes in the mid-1950s period. It is a subtle and more appropriate take for today’s design style. As black & white are not colours, they give strength and allow contrast to bordering colours.

COLOUR Mid-century colour palettes featured bright pastels: brightness achieved through the strength of white tint i.e. luminance.

CULTURAL REFERENCE FURNISHINGS & COLLECTIBLES

x Coffee table was acquired from an antique shop in Palm Springs. x Shine of leather reflects light & colour in the room. x Directional pull of shape leads the eye up to wall with artworks

Picking up on iconic products of the mid-century modernist period, such as the fake garden flamingo, Aumas’ brings a tropical elegance & reference of the cultural period into the space.

COLOUR PALETTE

Hand painted walls with geometrical shapes & a bright yellow strip, tease & direct the eye to the owners spirited collection of art & furniture.

The master hue in this colour is red, when mixed with white it has created a tint of pink . The natural light reflects off this wall and creates an luminous effect & a soft kiss of colour.

The bright yellow strip is a hot colour that has an uplifting effect, its sparsity and position bordering the peach toned pink allows the yellow to feel less heavy.

The frame and position of the small artwork directs the eye, creating movement & energy.

The use of white at the base of the wall, heightens the feeling in the room, creating a serge of energy.

COLOUR PALETTE

A rich cool grey from the Dulux ‘Valentine’ palette has been used to emphasize the vibrant pops of colour in the interior. It also acts to give the illusion of length within the room.

A strong cobalt blue draws the eye to the back of the room, creating a depth of field & vertical axis. The blue & gold are accent colours which alert and draw attention.

FURNISHINGS

Straight lines & geometric shapes pull contrast between softer, organic furnishings. Logs are texture adding & hand painted in bright hues.

This custom made golden console reflects the geometry of the herringbone flooring. The gold reflect surface enriches the colour of the floor. The geometry and pattern within the floor is what creates vibrancy & life within the interior.

Cube sculptures inspired by Sol LeWitt. Used in a Louis Vuitton display. Pink and yellow cubes pick up on painted wall.

Turquoise is an accent colour. This piece is a directional eye catcher that creates energy in the space through its colour & form.

‘Swan’ Sofa, 1958 by Arne Jacobsen. Made from only curves, no straight lines exist, contrasting other colourfully painted geometric pieces.
