As known, the Turkish automotive and auto spare parts industry have prospered dynamically in line with ever increasing demand from abroad within the last decade. So, business people operating in the industry have become outward oriented more than ever before. This fact is also reflected through the pages of our publications. Actually, the last decade has been a turning point for the Turkish automotive industry in terms of its integration into the world economy. Foreign firms that have been attentive to the potential that the Turkish automotive industry possesses have been investing in Turkey for years. Foreign partners have begun to view their facilities in Turkey as their production center for the global market. The auto parts industry has developed rapidly as a consequence of developments in the automotive industry. The Turkish auto parts industry with its large capacity, wide variety of production and high standards, supports automotive industry production and the vehicles in Turkey and also has ample potential for exports. Following the shift of the focus on customers, markets, products and competition from the local level to the global level, the manufacturers and suppliers now position themselves globally rather than locally. Today, the Turkish automotive industry is aware of the trend in international markets towards the increasing demand for environmentally-friendly products and by adapting itself to developments within legal and technical regulations. Many manufacturers in the sector managed to produce in environmental and quality management systems. The Turkish automotive industry, with its vehicles and components manufacturing sub-sectors has turned out to be one of the major exporting sectors of the Turkish economy. This month, we participate in Automech Formula Cairo, 2015 to convey the messages of the Turkish automotive and auto spare part exporters. Automech Formula is an international exhibition for the automobile sector in the African-Arabian region. It takes place annually at Cairo International Convention Center and presents cars, buses, workshop and service station equipment as well as automobile spare parts and accessories. The event provides a substantial platform for manufacturers and suppliers worldwide to reach out trade buyers. Our publications remain at the service of those business people seeking to increase their share in the increasingly competitive automotive markets. We wish Turkish automotive exporters and their trading partners lucrative business.

A

new three-storey mega project will be constructed underneath the Marmara Sea to link the two sides of

Istanbul. The three stories mega project will be built between the districts of Kucuksu in Asian side and Gayrettepe in Europe side. The mega project will be completed in 5 years and will cost $3,5 billion. Including two highways and 1 rail system the underneath sea project will evaluate time saving in the best way. The road that spans through the districts of HasdalUmraniye-Camlık will be passed in 14 minutes, as for the road through the districts of Incirli-Sogutlucesme in 40 minutes. The three airports, the suspension bridges over the Istanbul strait and the key highways which connect them each other will raise time saving to maximum level as a full integrated project. The 9 rail systems run in Istanbul will be linked to each other. Also all main axles will be connected to each other. The Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge, Bosporus Bridge and Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge will be linked to each other as a ring way. With this project, the highway passage that is needed by Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge and metro passage that will link Bosporus Bridge will also integrate through three stories mega project. Speaking at the introduction meeting of the project Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu stated about the tunnel passage, “This project is an integration and complementary project. When we look at Turkey we see it as a whole. We always look at our surrounding through a complementary aspect. For this reason, when the population will surge by 18 million as of the future vision, after that daily movement raise by 35 million, we are determined to public transport from 11 to 20 million. All of the projects make complementary to each other. Marmaray, Eurasia Tunnel, metro constructions, Canal Istanbul and the third airport, third bridge, north Marmara highway…” The new route will shorten the journey time to 14 minutes between Arnavutkoy district on the European side and Kucuksu district on the Anatolian side, where the tunnel exits will be built. As for security in the tunnel, Davutoglu said fire detection and alarm systems and surveillance cameras will be placed all along its length as well as waiting spots every 500 meters. The railway level of the tunnel will also be equipped with automatic signaling and auto-deceleration and acceleration systems. The premier added that the tender bids for the project will be completed before the general election to be held on 7 June 2014.

MARCH 2015

He said they aim to complete the overall project and put the tunnel into service within five years. Davutoglu described the 6.5 km-long tunnel as the first of its kind in the world, as it is comprised of one rail system between two highways for motor vehicles 110 meters under the Bosporus Strait. Davutoglu announced that the transportation capacity of the tunnel will be 6.5 million passengers. He also touched upon the project’s green credentials, which is expected to curb the greenhouse gases by 110,000 tons a year. In his speech at the opening of the publicity meeting, Transportation, Maritime and Communications Minister Lutfi Elvan said the mega project is the product of around 10 months of intensive work where they analyzed Istanbul's route profile and the demands of the passengers. Elvan emphasized that the tunnel will raise the role of railway system in public transportation. The minister said the sub-sea tunnel will be constructed with a "build-operate-transfer model" -- a form public-privatepartnership scheme -- so "the state will not pay a single penny." Time saving “Istanbul-Ankara high speed train together all of them are the matters which clinch the central position of Istanbul. The all main highways in Istanbul are going to link each other. The second feature of the project is time saving. The peoples of Istanbul have suffered traffic trouble much. Now, the time saving will be evaluated in the best way together with this project. The distance between Hasdal-Umraniye-Camlik will be passed in 14 minutes. The distance From Incirli to Sogutlucesme will be passed in 40 minutes. The three airports, bridges and the highways that link these to each other will reveal time saving as an integrated project. This project will not pose any damage to the silhouette of Istanbul at all.” The project respects to Istanbul “Thanks to this project, emission gases will reduce 115 thousand tons per annum. Without feeling a need to use a new land the traffic in Istanbul will ease. We discuss an integrated project; a project that respects to Istanbul.” Security thought up to the subtlest point As the fourth feature we mention a project of which security has been thought up to its thinnest detail. Fire sensor systems will be installed and will be monitored with cameras from every point.

Interest rates have a crucial role in the sales of automotive, cutting interest rates would stimulate sales in the domestic market, Ibrahim Aybar, Renault Mais General Manager

R

enault Mais General Manager Ibrahim Aybar expects cutting in interest rate to bolster the automotive market. When downward trend of inflation, growth parameters and decrease in oil prices which would contribute to the current account deficit are taken into consideration, these all developments might keep interest rates towards down in Turkey, Aybar said. “The low interest means low cost in loaning. The important thing is to sustain growth of Turkey in the targeted dimension. At that time per capita income would increase as well. This is a factor to boost sales of automobiles. After 2003, we have advanced very well during 5 years up to 2008 in per capita increase. Now we wish to see upward trend in per capita income after the elections to be held 7th June,” Aybar said. Over the question about making indigenous car whether it would be hybrid or electric, Aybar said, “For me primary priority is to make a brand belonging to us in Turkey.” Stating 70 years delay in production of fossil-fuelled vehicles pushed Turkey into assembly economy, Aybar recorded Turkish automotive industry has achieved to make electric vehicle. Aybar continued; “If we have gained a production quality in a high level, we do not have any trouble in making our own vehicle. The trouble is in selling to where. Because of currently 10 brands keep 75 percent of all markets in their hands across the world. There are hundreds of brands in developing countries. It is seen that these countries might get 2 percent market share from the developed countries’ market. If you cannot be able to sell, in fact it is not possible to sustain the brand. Ranging from design to production line and sales network, all costs of an automobile brand would not be possible under 1-1,5 billion euro. In the world a new market is being embodied. Transformation towards the electric vehicles has come to a certain stage across the world that the number of 88-89 million vehicles is sold per annum. In other words, currently existing number of 1 billion vehicles in the world to be transformed. In this case there is an outstanding market potential and there is also chance to make up a brand.”

28

MARCH 2015

Indicating the world automotive market would maintain the growth Aybar said, “Turkish automotive industry should be able to produce in many version and number with new investments. This issue which may take us atop in the world is very crucial. I hope we will experience a period to produce much more new investments, much more diversifying domestic made vehicles.” This year is growing year for us Aybar said Renault accomplished 2014 as targeted. They got the highest share in passenger cars and also Fluence made in Turkey was the bestseller car last year. He noted they would experience to boost their market share more in 2015. “We have products to support our aim. In recent years, a noteworthy product renovation happened. Our brand identity has covered a new way. We enjoy an era that we call as renascence. We have raised the technologic level to a very upper level. We have started R-Link application to make people online every time and also secure safety drive. We have been able offering vehicles that everybody wishes. Now expectations from automobiles that pollute environment less, fuel less we have provided these with our new models. Furthermore, regarding implementing these in our automobiles intensively we have become the bestseller brand. We will sustain these,” Aybar concluded. He also added they would advance to a more assertive level in commercial vehicles this year.

Auto Industry Reacts To Energy Union Package

NEWS

The European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA) re-stated its commitment to contributing its fair share towards lowering greenhouse gas emissions, it also foresees different transport modes should complement, rather than compete with, each other

F

ollowing the publication of the European Commission’s Energy Union proposal, the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA) re-stated its commitment to contributing its fair share towards lowering greenhouse gas emissions, namely through more fuel-efficient technology and continuing investments into alternative powertrains. Europe’s cars, vans, trucks and buses currently meet the highest environmental standards in the world. “We now need a wider debate involving all stakeholders on a more balanced and effective system for further reducing CO2 emissions,” stated Erik Jonnaert, ACEA Secretary General. ACEA advocates a system that focuses on reducing overall CO2 emissions from all transport modes. “For the automobile industry, this means we should not only focus on emissions from the vehicle itself, but also look at other factors influencing emissions during the use of the vehicle,” Mr Jonnaert explained. “This includes the carbon content of fuels, driver behaviour, infrastructure and the age of the car fleet.” ACEA’s members will continue to invest in alternative powertrains, including electric, hybrid, fuel-cell and natural gas-powered vehicles. Therefore ACEA welcomes the call for the swift deployment of alternative fuel re-charging infrastructure – essential for the roll-out of these alternative

50

vehicles. ACEA also calls for the harmonisation of customer incentives across EU member states to support the market uptake of such vehicles. Electrification is just one of a basket of alternative technological options that manufacturers are providing. Mr Jonnaert: “Technological neutrality, which has enabled manufacturers to develop a wide range of electric and non-electric alternatives and has encouraged innovation, must remain a key principle.” ACEA also stresses that a ‘modal shift’ from road to nonroad modes is not the right solution for decarbonising transport, as no one single transport mode is ‘per se’ more environmentally-friendly than others. This was highlighted recently by the European Environment Agency, which stated that “the environmental benefits of a large-scale modal shift are not precisely known and may differ considerably from that suggested by the existing average performance per mode, depending on a number of factors”. ACEA’s view is that different transport modes should complement, rather than compete with, each other.

Bozankaya In Advance With New Generation Vehicles Combining its international experiences with domestic production, Bozankaya will highlight its vehicles representing the prototypes in Turkey within the scope of Eurasia Rail 2015 fair. Acting as the innovative Turkish manufacturer of rail systems and commercial vehicles, Bozankaya presents its experiences in the field of transportation through new generation vehicle projects. Taking part in various rail system and public transportation projects across the world, Bozankaya is breaking many new grounds thanks to the domestically manufactured 100% lowentry tramcar, trambus, underground and electrically-driven bus projects. Bozankaya will highlight its domestic tramcar and trambus projects in Eurasia Rail Fair to be held in Istanbul between the dates of 05-07th of March and additionally it will present its electrically-driven bus in Turkey for the first time in Turkey (11.Hall – Stand.11D21) Domestically manufactured tramcar by Bozankaya is introduced in Kayseri first… Bozankaya, having engaged in rail system manufacturing since the year of 1997, developed domestically manufactured 100% low-base tramcar that represents many new grounds for Turkey. 66-meter long and bidirectional tramcar of Bozankaya which will be put into service in 2016 features to be the first vehicle with the highest passenger capacity in the tramcar segment in Turkey. Another important point for the vehicle is that it is the best cost-efficient tramcar project among the ones launched in Turkey so far. Winning the tender at the amount of 46 Million Euro, Bozankaya is manufacturing 30 pieces of such special tramcars for Kayseri Metropolitan Municipality first in order to ease city transportation. General Director of Bozankaya Group, Mr. Aytunç Günay says in his speech before the fair: “As Bozankaya, we are manufacturing 100% low-base tramcar vehicle at the length of 33 meters which consists of 5 modules, following our longterm R&D studies. Complying with international standards as a domestically manufactured vehicle, this tramcar features to have a higher quality and is a more advantageous transportation vehicle in financial terms in comparison with the vehicles imported from Europe.” The first domestic trambus of Turkey will be put into service The first domestic trambuses of Turkey manufactured by Bozankaya will be put into service accompanied by an official launch to be held in Malatya as a result of 8 months of test drive process. Delivering 10 trambuses to Malatya Metropolitan Municipality, Bozankaya receives demands for such special vehicle from local administrations situated both in Turkey and abroad. New generation trambuses which meet the need of environmentally-friendly, fast and reliable transportation systems and draw attention thanks to a low initial investment cost ensures 65-70% savings in comparison with diesel-fuelled buses. It, on the other hand, doubles the service life of dieselfuelled vehicles in terms of durability. Electrical propulsion system used in Trambus makes difference thanks to its energy and ecofriendly solution plan. Being operated with the principle of zero emission trambuses are also acting as a pioneer in terms of environmental awareness.

MARCH 2015

Acting as the General Director of Bozankaya Group, Mr. Aytunç Günay provides information on the first domestic trambus as follows: “Despite of having technical similarities with the tramcar systems, the trambus systems whose initial investment costs are much lower, obviously differ from the other systems in terms of initial investment costs thanks to the fact that the vehicle prices are lower and infrastructure requirements (rail, junction, signalling etc.) are less. Trambus provides about 75% advantage of saving energy in comparison with conventional vehicle whose total weight reaches up to 40 tons. Bozankaya Trambus is not only a good alternative for rail systems but also it can work in an integrated way with rail systems. We are pleased to offer such an important electrically-driven vehicle through domestic production in Turkey depending on the anticipation suggesting that electrically-driven engines will dominate the automotive industry. Our trambuses draw the attention of local administrations both on national and international platforms. We will soon start the export of our vehicles for which the technical committees from Greece, Brazil, Australia and Germany visited Turkey and witnessed their performance on-site.” E-Bus by Bozankaya will transport the members of the rail system industry in Eurasia Rail Fair Making significant R&D investments for the design of rail systems and commercial vehicles, Bozankaya will operate another new vehicle, E-Bus, in Eurasia Rail Fair, held in Turkey, for the first time. Launched by Bozankaya across the world in IAA Commercial Vehicles Fair held in Germany at the end of 2014, E-Bus will transport fair visitors in Eurasia Rail Fair. Bozankaya E-Bus is of particular importance because of the fact that it is a completely domestic investment and its R&D studies were carried out jointly by Turkish and German engineers. The production of E-Bus, on the other hand, whose accumulator system was developed by Bozankaya GmbH within the scope of Bozankaya Group is undertaken by Bozankaya Inc. When compared with other city buses currently in use, the product of Bozankaya, E-Bus, steps forward in terms of energy consumption, environmental awareness and efficiency. Mr. Aytunç Günay also states in his speech: “We regard the electrically-driven systems as the future of the new generation public transportation vehicles. Therefore, we have been working for a long period of time for E-bus whose design and manufacturing are undertaken by Bozankaya. E-Bus offers several solutions at a time as an environmentally-friendly, quiet, economical and efficient city bus. When our vehicle is charged, it covers approximately 260-320 km distance. As Bozankaya, we guarantee at least 200 km. E-Bus drew the attention of many countries thanks to these features.”

Carmakers Sued For 'Misleading' Advertisements Drivers pay up to several hundreds of Euros more per year on fuel than what can be expected from reading carmakers’ advertising claims,” commented by the European Consumer Organization

P

ressure is mounting on the Commission to bring in more realistic emissions tests for new cars after an Italian consumer organisation launched legal proceedings against Fiat and Volkswagen’s Italian office. The Milan-based organisation Altroconsumo investigated the fuel consumption of the Fiat Panda 1.2 and the VW Golf 1.6 TDI, and found they consumed 20-50% more fuel than was stated in advertisements. It has therefore accused the two carmakers of misleading customers with wrong fuel consumption information, according to the internet page of Transport Environment. The legal action is taking the form of a ‘class action’, which

means Altroconsumo is collecting the names of affected drivers and claiming compensation. Users of these cars pay €329 (Panda) and €502 (Golf) more per year, on the basis of driving 15,000km a year, than they would if fuel consumption was as stated. The action is happening in Turin, the home of Fiat, and Venice where VW has its Italian office. The next step is for a judge to hear the carmakers’ defence and decide whether the case can proceed. The action has the support of the European umbrella group of consumer organisations, BEUC, which says consumers are being ‘ripped off by carmakers stretching test loopholes to their absolute limit’. A spokesman said: ‘The suggestion is that carmakers have been doing more to influence the testing protocol as opposed to taking actual measures to reduce emissions.’ Environmental and consumer organisations have been saying for several years that rules for the fuel consumption and emissions testing of new vehicles produce results that are alarmingly far removed from emissions and fuel consumption in real driving conditions. The Commission accepted this principle and has proposed a stricter testing regime to come into effect in 2017, but this is uncertain following attempts by the automotive industry to delay the new tests. The outcome of Altroconsumo’s legal action could impact on the Commission’s willingness to press ahead with the new testing regime.

BP Energy Outlook: Growing Gas And Shifting Flows

D

66

espite the dramatic recent weakening in global energy markets, ongoing economic expansion in Asia – particularly in China and India – will drive continued growth in the world’s demand for energy over the next 20 years. According to the new edition of the BP Energy Outlook 2035, global demand for energy is expected to rise by 37% from 2013 to 2035, or by an average of 1.4% a year. The Outlook looks at long-term energy trends and develops projections for world energy markets over the next two decades. The new edition was launched in London by Spencer Dale, BP’s group chief economist, and Bob Dudley, group chief executive. “After three years of high and deceptively steady oil prices, the fall of recent months is a stark reminder that the norm in energy markets is one of continuous change,” said Spencer Dale. “It is important that we look through short term volatility to identify those longer term trends in supply and demand that are likely to shape the energy sector over the next 20 years and so help inform the strategic choices facing the industry and policy makers alike.” US tight oil grows The Outlook projects that demand for oil will increase by around 0.8% each year to 2035. The rising demand comes entirely from the non-OECD countries; oil consumption within the OECD peaked in 2005 and by 2035 is expected to have fallen to levels not seen since 1986. By 2035 China is likely to have overtaken the US as the largest single consumer of oil globally. The current weakness in the oil market, which stems in large part from strong growth in tight oil production in the US, is likely to take several years to work through. In 2014, tight oil production drove US oil output higher by 1.5 million barrels a day – the largest single-year rise in US history. But further out, the growth in tight oil is likely to slow and Middle East production will gain ground once more. By the 2030s the US is likely to have become self-sufficient in oil, after having imported 60% of its total demand as recently as 2005. Gas rising fast; coal slow Demand for natural gas will grow fastest of the fossil fuels over the period to 2035, increasing by 1.9% a year, led by demand from Asia. Half the increased demand will be met by rising conventional gas production, primarily in Russia and the Middle East, and about a half from shale gas. By 2035, North America, which currently accounts for almost all global shale gas supply, will still produce around three quarters of the total. Coal had been the fastest growing of the fossil fuels over the past decade, driven by Chinese demand. However over the next 20 years the Outlook instead sees coal as the slowest growing fossil fuel, growing by 0.8% a year, marginally slower than oil. The change is driven by three factors: moderating and less energy-intensive growth in China; the impact of regulation and policy on the use of coal in both the US and China; and the plentiful supplies of gas helping to squeeze coal out from power generation. LNG grows, becoming dominant in trade As demand for gas grows, there will be increasing trade across

MARCH 2015

regions and by the early 2020s Asia Pacific will overtake Europe as the largest net gas importing region. The continuing growth of shale gas will also mean that in the next few years North America will switch from being a net importer to net exporter of gas. The overwhelming majority of the increase in traded gas will be met through increasing LNG supplies. Production of LNG will show dramatic growth over the rest of this decade, with supply growing almost 8% a year through the period to 2020. This also means that by 2035 LNG will have overtaken pipelines as the dominant form of traded gas. Increasing LNG trade will also have other effects on markets. Over time it can be expected to lead to more connected and integrated gas markets and prices across the world. And it is also likely to provide significantly greater diversity in gas supplies to consuming regions such as Europe and China. Energy flowing east Energy self-sufficiency in North America - which is expected to become a net exporter of energy this year - and increasing LNG trade are also over time expected to have fundamental impacts on global energy flows. Increased oil and gas supplies in the US and lower demand in the US and Europe due to improving energy efficiency and lower growth will combine with continuing strong economic growth in Asia to shift the energy flows increasingly from west to east. Carbon emissions continue to grow The Outlook also considers global CO2 emissions to 2035 based on its projections of energy markets and the most likely evolution of carbon-related policies. Its projection shows emissions rising by 1% a year to 2035, or by 25% over the period, on a trajectory significantly above the path recommended by scientists as illustrated, for example, by the IEA’s “450 Scenario.” To abate carbon emissions further will require additional significant steps by policy makers beyond the steps already assumed, and the Outlook provides comparative information for possible options and their relative impacts on emissions. However, as no one option is likely to be sufficient on its own, multiple options will need to be pursued. This underlines the importance of policymaking taking steps that lead to a meaningful global price for carbon which would provide incentives for everyone to play their role in meeting the world’s increasing energy needs in a sustainable manner. Commenting on the Outlook, Bob Dudley concluded: “The energy industry works on strategies and investments with lifespans often measured in decades. This is why an authoritative view of the key trends and movements that will shape our markets over this long term is essential… and is precisely why this Outlook is so valuable.”

Focus RS Makes Debut At Geneva

F

ord Motor Company’s awesome Focus RS, the thirdgeneration model, the first to be confirmed for U.S. sale, features the turbocharged 2.3-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder engine found in the 2015 Ford Mustang and will have a final output of “more than” 316 horsepower. By comparison, the previous Focus RS delivered as much as 345 horsepower from a turbocharged five-cylinder mill, though Ford hasn’t ruled out launching more powerful versions of this third-gen model at a later date. Performance technologies include a pair of electronically controlled clutch packs that work a bit like a limited-slip differential. They uses sensors that monitor conditions 100 times per second to distribute torque continuously between the front and rear axles, and between the left and right sides of the vehicle. A maximum of 70 percent of the drive torque can be diverted to the rear axle, and up to 100 percent of available torque at the rear axle can be sent to each rear wheel. To upgrade the suspension, engineers have installed stiffer spring rates, bushes and anti-roll bars plus a set of adjustable dampers with road and track settings. The wheels measure 19 inches across and come wrapped in either Michelin Pilot Super Sport 235/35 tires or semi-slick Pilot Sport Cup 2 for track use, and a conventional six-speed manual has been confirmed. Finally, a carefully tuned electric power-assisted steering

68

MARCH 2015

system, working in combination with a more rigid front suspension knuckle design and shorter link arms, is said to improve steering response and feedback. U.S. specs will be announced closer to the car’s sales launch. The differences between the new Focus RS and its predecessor don’t end with the engine and drivetrain. While the last Focus RS came in three-door guise only, the new Focus RS comes as a five-door, which makes sense since Ford doesn’t build a three-door version of its latest Focus compact. The aggressive look of the previous model has carried over, though, and includes gaping intakes up front, chunky side sills, a large rear spoiler, and a rear bumper integrating dual-exhaust tips and a diffuser. Inside, you’ll find Recaro bucket seats up front, a flatbottomed steering wheel with leather trim, alloy pedals and a standard 8.0-inch touchscreen with Ford’s Sync interface. An additional bank of gauges above the center console display turbocharger boost pressure, oil temperature and oil pressure. Four colors have been announced: Nitrous Blue, Stealth Gray, Absolute Black or Frozen White. And just a final bit of trivia, professional rally driver and star of Gymkhana films Ken Block teamed with Ford as a consultant on development of the new Focus RS. The car makes its world debut at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show, which gets underway March 3. We should see it in local showrooms later this year or early next, listing as a 2016 model. In the meantime, to see what else will be on show in Geneva next month, head to our dedicated show hub.

HOTREC And IRU Join Forces HOTREC and IRU to work together to promote innovation and level playing field for all service providers in fields of hospitality and passenger road transport

H

OTREC, the trade association of the European hospitality industry, and the International Road Transport Union (IRU), announced their will to work together to promote innovation, high quality services to customers and a level playing field for all service providers of tourism accommodation and transport, including unregulated online accommodation providers and unregulated transport platforms. Both organisations will join forces to identify challenges and seek solutions. Christian de Barrin, CEO of HOTREC, said, “The rapid development of the so called shadow economy in the field of tourism accommodation provision and for-reward ride-sharing transport platforms might be harmful for the consumers, as safety and security are not always guaranteed in the provision of services, which are provided through certain online platforms.” Professional tourism and transport are subject to strong regulations in all EU countries, backed by regular controls, which guarantee the health, security and safety of consumers. While complying with these regulations comes at a cost, it more importantly guarantees safe and high quality services to customers. However, some service providers of tourist accommodation or ride-sharing as well as their distribution platforms are either excluded from regulation or deliberately disregard rules, with which professional businesses in the transport and tourism sector are obliged to comply. Oleg Kamberski, IRU Head of Passenger Transport, concluded,

MARCH 2015

“A level playing field ensures that private businesses embrace innovation and promote high quality and safe services to customers using the latest technology. The IRU launched the innovative Global Taxi Network to help generate a network of legal, safe, high quality taxi app providers that are easily accessible by customers worldwide. Working with HOTREC will strengthen our advocacy for fair competition and high quality customer services.” HOTREC and the IRU call on public authorities across Europe to implement policy initiatives that effectively address unregulated or illegal service providers of tourism accommodation or for-reward ride-sharing platforms. These initiatives should act as safeguards to protect consumers, while also ensuring fair competition for all by protecting businesses that operate legally. They should also facilitate further innovation in the professional tourism and transport sectors. HOTREC HOTREC represents the hotel, restaurant and café industry at European level. This industry includes around 1,8 million businesses, of which 99% are small and medium sized enterprises (91% of them micro enterprises, i.e. employing fewer than 10 people). These businesses make up some 59% of industry value added. The hospitality industry provides some 10.2 million jobs in the EU alone. Together with the other tourism industries, the sector is one of the largest industries in Europe. HOTREC brings together 42 national associations representing the sector in 28 different European countries.

Hyundai Launch A New Tucson At Geneva Motor Show.

P

reviously known as the ix35 in European markets, the C-segment crossover will use the Tucson name globally in a refreshing shift back to proper names rather than cold alphanumerics. The new model is a little longer, wider and lower than its predecessor, with a more expansive wheelbase, following the industry's wider trend towards shifting the proportions of crossovers towards cars rather than SUVs. The Tucson fits into Hyundai's range below the Santa Fe, and develops some of that car's themes, including a narrower, taller version of the brand's grille. Following an increasingly common trend amongst German automakers, the grille now links to the front lamps, which use LEDs. Other notable design features include the directional shapes of the wheelarches to add a sense of movement, while the surfacing helps give the car's profile some suitable solidity.

The interior is further removed from its larger sibling, its IP divided more clearly by function. Hyundai has also shifted away from using rather large amounts of silver plastic and neon blue lighting. The firm claims it has invested heavily in cabin materials, including the 'Wine Red' leather shown here.

Skoda Reaches Zenith With Flagship Superb Skoda's angle-inflected design language has reached its zenith with the unveiling of a new version of its flagship Superb

A

s seen on the smaller Octavia, Fabia and Rapid models, the brand's form language has established a look that's deliberately restrained, with the more unusual details seen on earlier models (think Roomster, original Yeti) are out of favor. Hence the previous Superb's 'twin door' tailgate – that opened both as a sedan and a liftback – has been replaced by a more conventional hatchback this time. However while this move may remove a layer of flexibility, it does appear to have a favorable impact on the proportions, allowing for a faster slope to the rear screen. The new car is similar in length to its predecessor, but the wheelbase is now 80mm longer and the front overhang has been reduced by 69mm, giving a much more impressive 'premium distance'

between front axle and windscreen base. Given the sheer number of sharp creases and striking surfaces, the Superb appears more like a delicate work of origami than simply an intricate blend of metal and plastics. Folds in the front bumper appear impressively precise, while the new lamps are a step forward in terms of their high-tech, fluted look. Aside from being class-leading in its shear enormity, the Superb's cabin appears rational, with a clear emphasis on solid forms – big, square seat bases, strong horizontal lines. If this is combined with another step forward in quality, we're keen to discover exactly how close in look and feel the materials are to a new Volkswagen Passat – loser than ever, we might wager.

To ensure it integrates with the brand's existing products, the Karl features the now-familiar shield-shaped grille that's intersected by a chrome bar with the brand's blitz logo at its center. The lower bodyside features another interpretation of the brand's blade motif, while above, the Karl follows the latest five-door Corsa with a pair of creases that run through the door handles. The large tail-lamps point to the horizontal crease across the tailgate, helping visually widen the car's rear. The Karl benefits from the fact that the IntelliLink seven-inch touchscreen has been mounted above the center air vents, placing it closer to the driver's eye line.

Renault Kadjar At Geneva Motor Show

O

ne of the advantages of large, multi-brand automotive groups is the ability to share platforms and therefore quickly – not to mention cheaply – generate derivatives across brands. The Renault-Nissan Alliance is certainly taking advantage of this with its latest offering, the Nissan Qashqai-based Renault Kadjar crossover. How times have changed – Renault was the company that brought us the ground-breaking Espace and Scenic MPV minivans in the 1980s and '90s respectively, but consumer tastes have shifted since their introduction with sales of this type of pragmatic family transport all but decimated by the rise of the crossover. Fortunately Nissan has been instrumental in the boom in crossover sales, so piggybacking on its bestselling

Qashqai makes fine business sense. While clearly related to its Nissan counterpart, Renault insists everything you see is different. Overall it’s a little longer than the Qashqai, at 4,450mm, which gives it more luggage space. And while costly to develop items such as door structures are shared, its DLO is differentiated by a new rear quarterlight design. The designers were also able to determine the surfacing of the car to fit in with the smaller Captur and Clio as well as the larger Espace. If you’d never seen a Qashqai you’d never question is authenticity as a Renault. It’s a similar story inside, with clearly very similar architecture yet the reskinned IP and door cards as well as Renault-specific gauges and HMI mean this is far more than simple badge engineering.

esigned to deliver more efficiency, connectivity and advanced safety features than ever, the nextgeneration 2016 Chevrolet Malibu will make its public debut at the New York International Auto Show this April. Using a blank slate approach, Chevrolet designers benefited from an entirely new architecture, which for Malibu includes a wheelbase nearly four inches longer than the outgoing model. That, in turn, provides increased rear legroom and interior space. Due to a higher-strength steel structure, the new Malibu is also expected to be 300 pounds lighter than the current model, which benefits the sedan’s fuel economy and handling. “Malibu’s gorgeous styling is the result of a masterful understanding of proportions,” said Ed Welburn, General

Nissan And Kanematsu To Encourage Longer Distance EV The project will seek to encourage the use of electric vehicles for longer-distance, inter-city driving by installing and maintaining multiple rapid chargers along specific intercity routes

N

issan Motor Co., Ltd. and the Japan-based trading company, Kanematsu Corporation, will work with the New Energy Industrial Technology and Development Organization (NEDO), Japan's largest public R&D management organization, to encourage the use of electric vehicles for longer-distance driving in Northern California. As the project's research coordinator, Nissan will organize the project and compile preliminary results together with Kanematsu up to the end of June 2015. The results will then be used in the project's validation efforts. Project Objectives The State of California actively promotes widespread use of zero emission vehicles (ZEV). For example, auto manufacturers with in-state sales above a certain level are obliged to sell a fixed ratio of electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles, and EV users enjoy preferential treatment, including use of priority traffic lanes. California ranks number one among US states for private EV use, with most cars used for shopping and city driving. The NEDO project will seek to encourage the use of electric vehicles for longer-distance, inter-city driving by installing and maintaining multiple rapid chargers along specific intercity routes. Nissan and Kanematsu will collect, analyze, and research data on EV driving patterns in California, and generate a suitable model to help promote more extensive use of electric vehicles in the state and beyond. Project Overview With the help of the California state government, Nissan and Kanematsu plan to place additional quick chargers at suitable locations along inter-city freeways in Northern California, and use project-specific information services to guide EV users to the most efficient quick chargers along the route. They will

82

MARCH 2015

then assess whether the combined hardware/software model can successfully encourage users to drive longer distances in their EVs. Nissan's role in the project will be to install and operate the quick chargers, and analyze any changes in EV usage as a result. Kanematsu will provide real-time information services to EV users. Kanematsu will also investigate potential business applications for real-time data and Big Data relating to EVs and EV charging systems. Nissan is the world's leading manufacturer of EVs, with sales of Nissan LEAF and other EVs totaling 164,000 units in more than 40 countries as of the end of January 2015. By collecting Nissan LEAF data from various countries, Nissan's Global Data Center is generating a broad picture of worldwide EV travel and charging patterns. Nissan plans to use the results of the preliminary study, along with its GDC data, to decide the best locations for the project's quick chargers. Kanematsu has been working with leading Japanese and US companies to develop potential machine-to-machine (M2M) and Internet of Things (IoT) business applications for automobiles. For this project, Kanematsu will work with Nissan to develop a real-time information service for EV users, and test its potential as a commercial M2M/IoT solution. Nissan and Kanematsu will also consider how in-vehicle hardware and M2M/IoT solutions can contribute to the formation of the ideal Connected Car with high-functioning systems and services. A positive outcome to the project would benefit users in the US by dramatically improving the usefulness and convenience of EVs. Encouraging the adoption of similar systems in other parts of the world could also promote broader electric vehicle ownership worldwide.
