The next best thing Amalgam Fine Model Cars Founded in Bristol, UK, in 1985, Amalgam Fine Model Cars are recognized worldwide as makers of the finest handmade large-scale car models. The company supplies display and presentation models to most of the world’s prestige and luxury car manufacturers and to the majority of the Formula 1 teams. Their work is unique in its attention to detail, together with a focus on creating models that truly capture the style and spirit of each car.
Today, Amalgam Fine Model Cars concentrates on the creation of the very highest quality model cars and yachts for both designers and manufacturers, as well as for high-end collectors worldwide. Only the highest quality materials are used for the construction of the models, including authentic paints and finishes, and each model is mounted on a base superbly finished in leather, aluminium or carbon fibre.
While the Amalgam brand has steadily grown in stature, becoming synonymous with superb handmade models created by passionate craftspeople, the core of the company is built around a small, highly skilled team of model makers. Although these experts draw on traditional skills in their painstaking work, the company continues to explore new technologies in its quest to make the very finest model cars.
Slowly but surely All in all, the team needs around three months of detailed research and development in order to create the master patterns for one of the 1/8th scale cars. To begin with, a pattern is made for every component of the model. Epoxy pattern board, sometimes known as chemical wood, is used to create the larger parts, while cast acrylic or brass is used for the smaller items. The patterns are used to make ‘soft’ tooling from clear silicon rubber into which the prototyping quality resin is poured to cast the components. These moulds faithfully reproduce even the most complex details and textures, providing superb levels of accuracy.
For some small components, metal patterns are used to create a vulcanised rubber mould into which molten white metal (pewter) is poured under centrifugal force. The white metal components are carefully fettled and polished, or – if they are to be painted – they join the resin parts to be prepared for spray painting with the original manufacturer’s specified paints. The components are given several coats of primer, then a colour base coat, and finally several coats of lacquer. Finally, each model’s body is cut and polished to achieve a truly fine finish.
Alongside the process of casting and finishing parts, the manufacturer’s original artwork is used to produce decals and etchings for badges and logos to ensure a faithful reproduction of the original designs. The tyres are modelled to the exact profile and tread pattern used on the original car, including the manufacturer’s logo on the sidewall, and are cast in rubber. Once all the components are finished, a team of three to six skilled model makers assemble the cars, usually in batches of five or ten, with each model taking around fifty hours to assemble.
