Group Planner: Tips for Excursions / Social Programs

For excursions around the international Lake Constance, the Bodensee-Vorarlberg region is the ideal location. The distances to the attractions, known all over Europe, are pleasantly short, the countryside is enchanting and the hosts really know how to provide their guests with a particularly enjoyable stay. On the Austrian side, for example, there are locations like the Vorarlberg mountains and the state capital Bregenz, where you can enjoy the most beautiful view over Lake Constance from the Pfänder panorama mountain. You can include a trip to the principality of Liechtenstein, travel on into Switzerland and experience the thunderous cascades of the Rhine Falls. On the German shores of Lake Constance, the journey includes a visit to Mainau flower island which shines with magnificent colours all year round. This exquisite journey is also ideal to start the season or indeed to end it!

This deal is intended, first and foremost, for clubs, associations and groups which place importance on making journeys together, on better understanding and getting to know one another. The programmes combine a little exercise in the countryside with some new impressions for the senses and regional delicacies. For example, one of the hikes takes you through the impressive Rappenloch and Alploch gorge, one of the “wildest” gorges in the Eastern Alps. In Bizau, in the Bregenzerwald, you go barefoot through the streams and across meadows. There is a golf taster course to improve agility and concentration. Along historical paths, participants go walking through the medieval town of Feldkirch and round the day off by doing some crossbow shooting. You can try wine from Vorarlberg – a particular rarity – at a wine tasting session in a “Heurigen” (wine tavern). How milk is turned into cheese is explained at an entertaining alpine dairy course at the alpine dairy school in Egg in the Bregenzerwald. A trip to neighbouring Switzerland, with a visit to a chocolate factory, provides the programme with a sweet conclusion!

Bregenz Festival: André Chénier

Rambling Advent

Ever year since 1946, the Bregenz Festival has been hosting a major opera on the lake in Lake Constance. The Viennese Symphony Orchestra has been the festival’s orchestra right from the beginning. The lake performances and stage settings have become increasingly spectacular over recent decades – in the open air and against the unique backdrop of Lake Constance, a top-class treat for the eyes and the ears awaits guests every evening, year in, year out.

The Christmas markets in Feldkirch, Dornbirn and Bregenz are still traditional meeting places where the locals and visitors love to gather. With the richly decorated towns as an atmospheric backdrop, you can stroll from stand to stand, enjoy the original arts and crafts and the warming delicacies. Right at the top of the list there are fruity punches, bread with melted raclette cheese or goodies like gingerbread and “Lebkuchen”.

In 2011 and 2012, the opera André Chénier by Umberto Giordano will be performed on the lake stage at Bregenz Festival. The opera – first performed in 1896 at Milan’s Scala – captivates the audience both with its passionate love drama and as a historical thriller. David Poutney, artistic director of Bregenz Festival comments: “André Chénier is not only Umberto Giordano’s masterpiece: it is as if this work had been composed especially for Bregenz’s lake stage! This opera is, quite simply, the perfect combination for this location: a thrilling plot and strong characters, caught between the excesses of the Ancien Régime and the terror of the French Revolution. Giordano’s music is Verismo at its best, and pushes ahead the highly exciting plot at breath-taking speed.”

Recommended trips in the region

Extraordinary architecture that skilfully combines the old with the new. In recent years, Vorarlberg - and particularly the Vorarlberg Rhine Valley - has become a widely acclaimed center for modern architecture. Enchanting scenery: Lake Constance’s 27 km of shoreline, the wide plains of the Rhine Valley with its reed-filled landscape, the gently climbing sun terraces on the edge of the Rhine Valley. A wonderful view. Perfect location: ideal for excursions in and around the “four-country corner” around Lake Constance.

Bregenz – the advantages of the lake The day breaks with a look behind the scenes at Bregenz Festival. One of the venues of the festival is the largest floating stage in the world. The festival leaves its mark on the town, the economy and its population. In order to illustrate this, we recommend you follow this up with a guided tour of Bregenz. In the afternoon, a trip by cable car to the Pfänder is on the agenda. At a height of 1,064 m above sea level, enjoy the panorama across Lake Constance and numerous alpine peaks. An hour-long ride in a carriage or sledge on the ridge of the Pfänder is the perfect complement. Dornbirn – nature, factories and vintage cars The trip to Dornbirn, the largest town in Vorarlberg as well as the region’s business center, starts with a visit to the interactive “inatura” Museum of Nature with Science Center. The “inatura” uses modern means to present the region’s habitats. This is the place for handson experiments, touching and comprehending. From the modernised factory building which accommodates the “inatura”, the guided tour follows the trail of Dornbirn’s history. Water power and the textiles industry once made the town quite prosperous. In the afternoon, we visit the world’s largest Rolls-Royce Museum. The museum is located in a 150-year-old, historical factory building. The elegance and timeless design which helped Rolls and Royce to achieve worldwide fame are reflected over three floors. Hohenems – town of the counts on the Schlossberg The modern exhibition and various special exhibitions in the Jewish Museum narrate the centuries of history of the Jewish community in Hohenems. During a guided tour of the museum and the town, you discover lots of important information about the cultural past of the town on the Schlossberg and about the significance of Hohenems county. In the afternoon, Countess Stefanie Waldburg-Zeil relates the history of and life in the renaissance palace. The palace is located right in the center of the town and, today, belongs to the Waldburg-Zeil family. You then set off on a journey through time in Stoffel’s Saw Mill, where you get an insight into the cultural and historical documentation of 2,000 years of milling technology. Feldkirch – medieval flair Count Hugo and Countess Mechthild of Montfort take you on a guided tour of the town. They relate the story of the founding of the town in around 1200, and take you to the Schattenburg, the town’s landmark. Following a visit to the new museum, you can try your luck at crossbow shooting and then participate in a “last supper” in the Schützenhaus. In the afternoon, take a walk through Ardetzenberg alpine deer park or to Letzehof Buddhist monastery.

Rhine Falls/Schaffhausen

The Rhine Falls – Europe’s largest waterfalls.

The monastery island – UNESCO World Heritage.

This valley even had Nietsche speechless.

The city with gates and towers with a view of the Alps.
