Exercise & Nature
Lake and Mountain Bathing and Sailing: Lake Constance is an excellent bathing lake and a demanding stretch of water for yachtsmen. Boats for hire, sailing schools and lovely bathing beaches are located in Bregenz, Hard and Lochau. There is also a spacious nudist swimming complex close to Hard, and several bathing places free of charge. The bathing lakes in the Rhine Valley are also popular: the Jannersee in the Lauteracher Ried and the Untere Au bathing lake close to Frastanz. The Rheinauen bathing center, close to Hohenems, promises fun and relaxation with romantic natural bathing spots along the Old Rhine, swimming pools, slides and sports fields. Cycling: Vorarlberg locals are the keenest cyclists by far, when compared with the rest of Austria. This is hardly surprising, when you consider the well-built network of cycling paths. And cycling, quite simply, is fun in these parts! The paths are pleasantly flat, taking you through countrysides you could never discover by car – right next to the shore of the lake and along the Rhine dam, through nature reserves and unspoilt marshlands. If you are looking for a greater challenge, then simply cycle across one of the mountains! Hiking/Rambling: lovely views and hiking paths tempt you to go even higher. You can take the comfortable way to the top – by cable car. Take the Pfänderbahn from Bregenz to the Pfänder panoramic and hiking mountain, at an altitude of 1,064 m. The destination of the Karren cable car in Dornbirn is the 900-meter high Karren. You can stop off in the glass panoramic restaurant for a refreshment before you set off. The Schnifis cable car takes passengers to the Hensler mountain station, where a magnificent alpine panorama unfolds, and where a mythical hiking path starts. For hikes on the sunny terraces above the Rhine Valley, we recommend the villages of Eichenberg, Möggers, Bildstein, Buch, Fraxern, Viktorsberg, Übersaxen and Zwischenwasser. Start at Frastanz if you wish to climb the region’s highest mountain: the 2,053-meter high “Three Sisters”. Birds of Prey Show: close to the mountain station of the Pfänderbahn cable car, birds of prey demonstrate their flying skills twice a day between early May and early October.
